Home is Where the Art is

Designer Jiun Ho brings together interests in culture, travel, food and art to create soulful spaces that feel like home W O N D E R + WA N D E R Where do designers find their inspiration? The Malaysian-born designer Jiun Ho looks nowhere less than to the whole wide world. “My parents saved every penny so they could travel, and they instilled that same sense of adventure in me,” says Jiun, who has visited more than 100 countries. A global menagerie of influences informs all facets of his design from interiors and furniture to lighting and accessories. “An interior space only becomes warm and inviting when it reflects the passions of the people who live there,” Jiun says. His own San Francisco studio, a space he calls Jiun Ho de Jia (above and inset), meaning the “House of Jiun Ho” in Chinese, is where Jiun brings home his far-flung inspirations and exquisite souvenirs. “The space is part gallery, event space and atelier. It’s really my creative laboratory,” he says.

A d verti s em ent

DESIGN MIND From scaling the peaks of the Andes to exploring the chateaus of the Loire and the antique shops of Bangkok, Jiun’s design brings together vast and disparate influences. The work’s unifying factors are deliberate craftsmanship and meticulous detailing. In Jiun’s hands, the solid brass rivets of the Cordoba chair (left) double as poetic accents. A handsewn top-stitched detail on the Colina sofa (below with the Ulu cocktail table) provides the finishing touch, giving a nod to the world of couture fashion.

“An interior space only becomes warm and inviting when it reflects the passions of the people who live there.”

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Jiun’s passion for travel, food and culture has brought him a wide range of projects from the blissful Revel Spa to the distinctive Two Michelin Star restaurant Saison (left, middle) and a bevy of luxury residences (left, below). To enliven each of these unique spaces, Jiun scours the globe to uncover rare sources and find one-of-a-kind items or fashions custom work. “From factory to finished product, I am totally focused on high-quality and detail. Sometimes even the tiniest element of a design can make or break the experience,” says Jiun, who takes immense pride in the fine quality of his pieces. Hallmarks of Jiun’s approach include textures against clean lines, rich dark woods against simple fabrics, and pure shapes and forms that are both challenging and inviting. Above all, Jiun’s graceful interiors make space for friendship, food, entertaining and celebration. “The key is to create that easy feeling of home wherever you are in the world,” he says.

EDITOR’S LETTER

GOLD LIST

T

his issue, our Gold List is devoted to the great talents of our industry— architects, interior designers, home builders and landscape architects, who are the DNA of our magazine.

The Gold List recognizes these design professionals who have had their work published in our pages. Their projects continue to influence and inspire, ranging from stunning buildings and flourishing residential gardens to rooms curated with attractive objects. More importantly, these masterminds shape structures that become the most personal part of our lives—our homes—and fill them with beauty, creating memories and the basis from which one can dream. Our collective editions span the country, from Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest to Chicago and New York, with many more points in between. One of the more gratifying aspects of my job is having the opportunity to showcase so much talent, and also getting to know these creative souls on a personal basis. Our Gold List speaks to a cultivated life...one I hope you’ll relish.

HEIRLOOM QUALITY In the old naval shipyards just a short drive from historic downtown Charleston stands a brick building so unassuming, one might mistake it for a forgotten warehouse. But inside—in an ironic juxtaposition of beauty—custom lighting fixtures are being lovingly pieced together by the highly skilled artisans of The Urban Electric Co. f ever there were a word that described a city so precisely, Charleston’s would most certainly be “charming.” In this town, where weathered cobblestones and pastel row houses all but whisper the stories of a bygone era, it would seem

only appropriate that it be the backdrop for a company making heirloom-quality lighting fixtures the old-fashioned way: at a work bench, by hand. “Take a quick lap around our factory, and you’ll notice there aren’t many machines. It’s a very people-centric process,” says Dave Dawson, founder and owner of The Urban Electric Co. “This is a hand-built business and our artisans are our biggest investment.” Just a decade old, Dawson’s company has not veered from what it initially set out to do. The brass and copper lanterns, sconces and pendants—all built to order—that come out of the South Carolina workshop are still held to an incredibly high standard of excellence. “We define craftsmanship as quality,” says Creative Director Michael Amato. “It’s about the caliber of the materials, the finishes, the execution in manufacturing. Our clients come to us to obsess over the details.” So suffice it to say that in a world of instant gratification, where quick-to-ship, machine-made foreign goods are an ever-growing norm, The Urban Electric Co. is an outlier. “Pride is our heritage. We’re all artists in our own right with a passion for what we’re doing, and we can make anything for anyone,” notes Jeff Peek, a senior master craftsman who’s been with the company over nine years. “Building by hand breathes life into a piece, gives it warmth, character and a genuine human touch. That’s something a machine could never do.” It’s no wonder such product integrity has drawn the discerning eye of some of interior design’s elite; the likes of Darryl Carter, Steven Gambrel and Amanda Nisbet have all fashioned a collection for the company stemming from their desire to collaborate with the brand. “I think we’re all nostalgic for traditional craftsmanship and how things used to be made,” notes Dawson. “People crave that, and I believe that’s what we deliver.”

Thoughtful design along with hours of meticulous craftsmanship goes into every lighting piece created by The Urban Electric Co. The Charleston-based company prides itself on the artisans behind the mostly bench-built process. Though custom fixtures make up a large part of the business, an inventory of over 300 in-house designs, which can be personalized with custom finishes and paint colors, are available for quick shipping.

RADAR

BESPOKE

Q+A Luxe sits down with Dave Dawson, founder and CEO of innovative lighting brand The Urban Electric Co.

How do you balance speed with craftsmanship? The world is moving faster and people aren’t willing to wait as long for things. But we’re lucky; we have clients that appreciate the care behind our fixtures. Who is the audience of The Urban Electric Co.? We’re looking to work with very selective clients, architects and designers; those who recognize the value that one-of-a-kind lighting, with proportion and scale, can add to a space. Why build local? When we started this business, we felt an American artisan who was engaged in the process and appreciated who the client was, they were going to put more into their craft. At the end of the day, there’s value in that. We couldn’t make the same product in a faceless factory abroad. What defines your brand? All of our lights come with a lifetime guarantee. There is no fine print, no exceptions. We stand firmly behind every piece that comes out of our man-helmed factory.

Will we see furniture or other décor from The Urban Electric Co. in the coming years? It’s just as important to know who you aren’t, so that you can stick to who you are. I don’t want to make a lot of different things only half well; I’d rather do one thing flawlessly. We love lighting, and I think we’ll be doing the same thing in five years, just better. GIVEN THE PROPER DESIGN NARRATIVE, A LIBRARY—NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL— CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO A MASTERPIECE.

ike a book buried amongst a shelf of its literary peers, a library may sometimes be an untapped room in a home. Often thought of as dark, mahogany-clad alcoves, a rich yet modern space can emerge when fashioned with the right details. “Don’t shy away from mixing styles or lightening things up,” says designer Edda Elias, who imagined this library in Lawrence, New York. “Have a sense of whimsy when selecting furniture

and decorative pieces.” Here, traditional wood paneling and an octagonal wood floor echoed in the ceiling opening create the backdrop for sleek pieces arranged for diverse uses. “I wanted to ensure that in each area, there was a feeling of intimacy and comfort.” Two words that surely elicit the very essence of what a library should be.

TEXTILE DESIGNER ZAK PROFERA LOOKS TO CLANDESTINE TURKISH SHOPS, INSTAGRAM CRUSHES AND—WHAT ELSE?—A DANGEROUS COCKTAIL OF INSOMNIA AND EBAY TO FUEL HIS CREATIVE SPIRIT.

TELL US THE STORY BEHIND ZAK+FOX:

I’m always trying to define a narrative and I loved the idea of a boy and his dog traveling together—best friends on adventures, returning with treasures and stories. LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION, HAZ:

Haz is Turkish for enchantment—three letters, totally simple yet weighted with meaning. It’s the perfect summary for the sensations you feel in Istanbul. Like the collection, it’s exotic at its core, romantic, but with some grit. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I find myself drawn to things that are a bit unplaceable. I love seeing how design from one culture reflects that of another that may seemingly be worlds apart. PERSONAL VS. DÉCOR STYLE:

Understated, but with fancy sneakers. I like comfort. I like to layer. I think the way I dress myself and my home are not dissimilar. #INSTA-CRUSH:

Melissa Sutton from @PlumCollective is a young collector of 20th-century design and art. She posts a wealth of inspiring images and mixes in her own covetable pieces for sale. DREAM CLIENT:

I’m still waiting for an adventurous spirit to let me tent a room. It’ll happen one day.

TEXTILE DESIGN MUSE:

Jack Lenor Larsen pioneered what we’re all trying to do, but way before any of us were actually doing it. SHOPPING HAVENS:

New York: Espasso in Tribeca; I need a bigger apartment just to fit all the Sergio Rodriguez furniture I dream of buying one day. San Francisco: Coup d’Etat has a wild collection of antiques and reproductions. L.A.: Nicky Kehoe’s NK Shop is the right mix of old and new. London: Jamb, if only to see the superb taxidermy giraffe. Istanbul: A La Turca; you ring a doorbell on a nondescript façade to enter, which makes it feel all the more exclusive. YOUR IDEA OF GASTRONOMIC BLISS:

Ordering the omakase from Sushi Yasuda in New York. I don’t go very often, but that’s only because I don’t want to become numb to the sensation of true happiness UP NEXT FOR YOU:

I’m launching a bespoke line of prints based on my personal collection— hatched from a dangerous cocktail of insomnia and eBay—of antique kimono stencils from the late 1800s. It will be available exclusively through my TriBeCa studio. Zak Profera alongside his trusty business partner Shinji. Fabrics, left to right: Takigawa in Ink, Damatlik in Rubia, Khotan in Rubia, Basilica (on sofa).

Fashion and design take a walk on the wild side this winter as a stampede of antlers, hides and animal prints take charge. As senior vice president and creative director at Estée Lauder—the brand her illustrious grandmother founded in 1946—Aerin Lauder has a way with feminine detailing. For her recent lighting collection, she envisioned a 72-piece assemblage of fixtures, many of which are endowed with that sophisticated aesthetic. Here, her Lynn wall light illuminates, its chic floral crystals and lustrous burnished silver base instantly conjuring a bygone era of glamour. Undoubtedly versatile in nature, Lynn could be the crowning accent in the tony boudoir of a 1940s apartment, or function as a classic addition to a contemporary space.

“I’m drawn to adaptable pieces like this wall light, which can function in a very modern or more traditional setting. I can envision it on the ceiling of a small powder room or on either side of a mirror in an entryway.” LILLY BUNN WEEKES | NEW YORK, NY | LILLYBUNN.COM

“The whimsy of the pattern’s angular nature calls to mind the Legion of Honour medal ribbons imparted to French military heroes. From a design perspective, I would use this fabric to decorate a cabana in a fabulously tropical locale.” MICHELLE NUSSBAUMER | DALLAS, TX | CEYLONETCIE.COM

+

Upon describing the notion behind this striking new fabric from Parisian textile atelier Pierre Frey, chairman and creative director Patrick Frey explained, “Carriacou was conceived from the idea of a decorative scarf bestowed upon the winning horse at a prestigious race.” Emblazoned on an elegant linen backdrop, the vibrantly hued embroidery summons a dramatic yet playful feel, and would make for a gorgeous accent pillow, upholstery piece or set of drapery panels.

Jonathan Browning says the smooth, continuous curves of a racetrack inspired the concept for his Chamont chandelier. Connecting seamlessly to the fixture’s elegant antique bronze frame is a series of six lead crystal cylinders perched atop the base ever so delicately. Each piece, etched with an intricate hand-carved motif, lends an acute attention to detail. “I was most interested in exploring minimalism,” notes the San Francisco-based designer, who adds that “orchestrating clean lines, a luxurious feel and elegant design elements” were his chief objectives.

John Derian Company and Astier de Villate’s latest collaboration is a delightful departure from the sophisticated ceramic tableware that the two brands have joined forces to create in the past. “This collection is a novel variation from our decorative work,” says John Derian, who was inspired by the opportunity to create serving ware for everyday use. With imagery reminiscent of 19th-century bookplates and ephemera, each of the Paris-made pieces— including the charming Owl platter shown here—would infuse a winter tablescape with a consummate touch of polished whimsy.

Prior to launching her eponymous Seattle design studio and event space, Tamara Codor spent several years studying classical painting. Her unique approach to designing furniture undoubtedly reflects a command of fine art. “My enduring inspiration is to create beautiful compositions and form function into art,” she says. Drawing from the conviction of balancing mass and weightlessness, Codor stacked four individual blackened oak drawers atop an exposed steel and gold-leaf frame to create this arresting dresser, which has materialized as an iconic part of her growing collection.

“The way Codor reimagined a traditional case piece is brilliant; it’s functional, but so clean and elegant. I would line up three of these for maximum effect, but they would also be superb as side tables in a bedroom.” ANNE COYLE | CHICAGO, IL | ANNECOYLEINTERIORS.COM

Design becomes art in the hands of Vivian Carbonell, who sculpts lighting and furniture from her namesake studio in Miami. Made from wood, cast bronze, brass and steel, her pieces capture the art of form and function with their honest presence and natural elegance. Crocodile, ostrich and other exotic skins cinch many of her pieces with an air reminiscent of equestrian-

inspired fashion. But nature remains her biggest influence, citing Frank Lloyd Wright’s Millard House as the impetus for her new Glyph lamp. Carbonell began her journey in Los Angeles when logic won over artistic aspiration and she became head of production for several furniture manufacturers. This process illuminated her love of lighting since “it was the best way to apply the sculptural qualities that define my work,” she says. Today, R Hughes in Atlanta and Coup d’Etat in San Francisco represent her line. When asked to describe her audience, Carbonell says they “have a good eye, respect their surroundings, appreciate quality and enjoy inspiring pieces.” An apt account of the artisan designer herself. carbonelldesignstudio.com; 877.644.5153

ART COUTURE

VIVIAN CARBONELL FIRST PIECE I DESIGNED:

The Vela floor lamp. It was something I had sketched in a book before ever moving here and then realized that I subconsciously fashioned the wood stacks of its base with a pattern similar to my company logo. DREAM COLLABORATIONS : Andy Goldsworthy and Raymond Jungles on landscape architecture, and Jacques Grange and Louise Nevelson on an interior. FAVORITE HOTEL:

The Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California. It’s a little piece of heaven on earth. GREATEST INDULGENCE:

I’ll go to Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak restaurant in Miami for an early dinner. It begins with a Broken Flower, their signature gin cocktail, and ends with the most amazing adult milkshake ever—a bourbon malted with salted caramel. MOST ENGAGING ART PERIOD:

The early to mid-1900s, especially in Paris. Most designers in those times approached their work much like an artist and were hands-on. New materials and techniques were experimented with and there was an explosion of creativity all around. LUXE INTERIORS

In 1987, he opened Arteriors, the Dallas-based home décor brand with 12 showrooms and hundreds of retailers nationally, including a Los Angeles location opening this winter. When it comes to rousing his creative spirit, Moussa credits flea markets, the beach and Alexander McQueen, but adds that “inspiration is everywhere: a bar, a restaurant, a boutique.” That’s why he never stays in the same hotel twice. “If I travel the same path, I become stale.” Moussa even rearranges his home every six months; a process that fuels new collections, like Arteriors’ recent fireplace line. New York as collections manager at The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she worked under esteemed curator Richard Martin. Sewell’s decision to move on and accept a position as curator of fashion design at the Phoenix Art Museum was simple. “I had ideas that I wanted to express, much like an artist,” she says. Sewell has originated 34 exhibitions since her start in 2000 and brings a definitive point of view to her curating. “This isn’t about fashion on display like in a store window,” she says. “Here, the history behind the clothes are just as important as the objects themselves.” A self-declared minimalist, most days Sewell favors black slacks and T-shirts, claiming when she’s selecting pieces from the vault, a neutral palette is less distracting. “But come opening night, I still love to dress up,” she says, “and I’m the first one to put on Ralph Rucci or Vivienne Westwood.” phxart.org; 602.257.1222

FA S H I O N F O R W A R D

DENNITA SEWELL EVERY CURATOR SHOULD:

Look at their subject in context of history, the current environment and across other disciplines. PERIODS YOU FIND MOST ENGAGING:

The 18th century is so interesting to me because of the high level of craftsmanship, and the Rococo aesthetic appeals to my romantic sensibility. I also love the 1920s; it’s the first historical period that still seems completely modern today. MOST TREASURED PIECE:

One of my favorite items in the museum’s collection is a blue sequin dress by Chanel from 1928. It is superior in its modernity. DESIGN ICONS:

Fashion designers Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto, Azzedine Alaïa and Ralph Rucci, to name a few. INSIDE TIP:

When I am dressing mannequins in the vault, I always have music on, often from the period of the exhibition we are working on. Preparing the mannequins is a very physical process and the music gives me the energy and vibe that brings an object to life. LUXE INTERIORS

LEADING ROLE

To fill the sprawling open space of this Beverly Hills kitchen, designer Michael Berman opted for oversize double islands. “They are a great solution for dividing a long space into two separate cooking and prepping areas,” he says, “and the solid walnut pillar legs create a furniture-like quality.”

“This bathroom, particularly the mosaic floor, was about finding balance; not just in the scale of the space, but between past and present,” says designer Chad Eisner of this Venice Beach, California, retreat. “It touches on historical references of what an oldworld Tuscan home would be today.”

I

t might sound surprising, but this bathroom is a study in restraint,” says Los Angeles designer Chad Eisner. “It’s really about ‘less is more.’ ” At first glance, the Tuscan-inspired bathroom reveals a custom mosaic floor by Waterworks—softly

reflected in a sculptural mirror-finished soaking tub by the brand— that packs a dazzling punch. But a further study reveals subdued draperies, rough-hewn reclaimed beams, modest hardware. “There really was no competing with that floor or tub,” Eisner says about the space’s protagonists, pieces selected and sited by the home’s architect, William Hablinski. “So I wanted to keep the rest of the details simple.” Eisner draped the double French doors in unlined sea green linen to diffuse sunlight, and selected an eye-catching yet uncomplicated light fixture. “The chandelier could have been really grandiose because of the large volume of space here, but the frame and finish are very simple, and the soft drapes of crystal beads provide a sensual line that casually moves your eye in and out.” Ultimately, Eisner sought to create a warm, soothing oasis where every detail felt effortless. “This room overlooks the Los Angeles Basin, so it has a magical quality in that you can be soaking in the tub and no one in the world can see you, but you’re looking over millions of people go on about their lives.

W

hen San Francisco-based designer Dara Rosenfeld was hired to transform a residence in the city’s Cow Hollow neighborhood into a sophisticated Parisianinspired dwelling for a couple and their two

children, it wasn’t exactly a random coincidence. “I had designed their second home in Hawaii,” says Rosenfeld, who studied art history at Boston University and spent time at Christie’s, Peter Marino Architect and The Wiseman Group before launching her own firm in 2007. “Usually it’s the other way around: You design a first home and then do the vacation home, but we just hit it off. They called me right away when they bought this house and said, ‘Come help!’ ” Though designed in 1914 by architect Albert L. Farr, the distinguished house wasn’t without a set of design challenges. “The whole place was so dated,” says Rosenfeld of interiors marked by dusty rose-hued carpet, ballerinapink wallpaper and lots of chintz. “I wanted to come in with a fresh vision and make it modern for today.” She found inspiration in the couple’s LUXE INTERIORS

combine those styles and make the space feel timeless.” Rosenfeld started things off by creating a glamorous yet inviting setting reminiscent of an elegant hotel lobby for the entry, which she appointed with the client’s antique French chest of drawers and an upholstered pouf by Todd Hase. It was also important to the couple that the interiors incorporate unexpected elements to keep it from feeling too serious. An adjacent staircase lined with a custom orange-and-gray argyle carpet accomplishes all of those goals. “I wanted something that one wouldn’t usually see on stairs,” adds the wife. LUXE INTERIORS

In the adjacent dining room, the mix of old and new continues with a chandelier by Hélène Aumont suspended above a French provincial dining table. Rosenfeld wrapped the room with a hand-embroidered and handpainted singerie wallcovering. “We wanted it to be fun,” says Rosenfeld of the silk Fromental design depicting day-to-day life in a monkey village. “It’s also beautiful, and the workmanship is exquisite.” Likewise, in the living room, Rosenfeld paired velvet-covered Milo Baughman chairs with a vintage Lucite table and the owner’s antique armchairs and table. “It’s always a delicate balance to mix old and new,” the designer says. “In this room, all of the seating pieces have soft curves, and the house’s color palette unifies the look.” Upstairs in the master bedroom, the designer placed a sinuous Corbin Bronze bench at the foot of a four-poster canopy bed, where she hung a 19th-century Portuguese embroidered coverlet. “It adds texture, pattern and visual interest to the clean-lined bed,” says Rosenfeld. “And it’s so beautiful to see as you walk into the room.” In the adjoining master bathroom, Rosenfeld

For the serene master bedroom, Rosenfeld flanked a four-poster canopy bed by Thos. redesigned and updated the space in a soothing gray palette. Builder Justine Sears carried out the renovation, which included adding a floor made with Waterworks mosaic tile highlighted with custom quatrefoil designs.

A calming gray palette marks the master bathroom, where the tub is crowned with Carrara marble and wrapped with custom millwork. The faucet is from Lefroy Brooks, and a custom quatrefoil pattern highlights the mosaic floor by Waterworks.

Perhaps the best illustration of the house’s updated sensibility is in the study, where Rosenfeld placed a leather Chesterfield sofa against bright orange Venetian plaster walls finished by decorative painter Philippe Grandvoinet. “You feel like you’re in an Hermès box,” says Rosenfeld, who picked up the hue again in the fabric covering two armchairs and the Roman shades. “It also complements the Golden Gate Bridge, which you see from the window.” She may have started with a collection of traditional furnishings, but Rosenfeld ended up with a design that feels current and inviting. “Although there are beautiful antiques throughout, it doesn’t feel pretentious,” she says, noting her clients’ willingness to try bolder elements—such as the argyle rug and orange study. “As a designer, it’s fun to work with daring clients. It makes you think out of the box because they’re looking to you to show them something unexpected. I welcome the challenge.” L LUXE INTERIORS

even years after moving into their house in a new suburban development, the couple who had it built was ready for a change. More mature now with a better sense of style (not to mention two young daughters), they sought to add color,

luster and sophistication to their more neutral Oakton, Virginia, home. The wife, who had been poring over decorating magazines and searching the Internet for ideas, found nearby designer Lauren Liess through her popular blog, Pure Style Home. “I was looking for something youthful, fresh and clean,” the wife says. “I wanted everything to be family-friendly, informal and livable.” That’s where Liess came in. Working with Image Flooring and carpenter Michael Carr, Liess first oversaw the kitchen remodel, helping the owner replace the stained-maple cabinetry and brown granite counters with white-paneled cabinets and twinkling quartzite surfaces. The

designer added more panache with a mini-mosaic glass backsplash and polished-nickel light fixtures. On the rest of the main level, Liess replaced wall-to-wall carpeting and oak floors with wide-plank hardwood in a deep espresso stain. She then installed tall baseboards to complement the 9-foot room heights, and added new personality to the foyer with a gridwork of molding on the ceiling. Color and texture were next. “It’s a large house,” says Liess. “My aim was to make it warm and intimate, so I added soft color to the walls, as well as pretty wallpapers and grass-cloth ceilings.” The homeowner had selected a palette of pale blues and serene creams, and kept some existing furniture, including a creamy yellow sofa in the family room. Liess began her transformative work in this two-story space, because it was open to the rest of the house. Here, the designer introduced youthful patterns—both botanical and geometric—via upholstery, curtains and pillows, and she layered multiple textures, such as plush mohair-velvet wingbacks and a coarse sisal rug laid beneath the custom wool carpet. Liess then hung long curtains from hardware mounted along the ceiling’s periphery rather

than from rods bisecting the triple-arched windows, as before. She completed the room with a mix of new furnishings and vintage finds. “I like to layer elements to make a space welcoming,” the designer says. “I especially love pulling in natural textures. In a big house, layering makes the rooms cozier. A layered home also feels lived-in.” Liess used iridescent details, such as the living room’s Capiz-shell chandelier and shimmery wallpaper, to balance the decor’s organic feel and to ramp up the glamour. Mirrored furnishings and metallic finishes abound everywhere, reflecting and amplifying light from the new fixtures she also installed. “Lighting is so important,” Liess explains, “especially in a house where the ceilings are so tall. The overall result is striking. “When I first saw the house, it was much more traditional,” Liess says. “Now, it’s fresher, lighter, happier and more personal—a far better match for my clients.” The wife agrees: “The house is definitely more custom now, and I love it. My kids are all over the place, doing homework in the dining room, playing piano in the living room; my husband and I spend a lot of time together in the kitchen and family room. It really feels like us.” L

T

he apartment had a closed-off feeling, a mishmash of Colonial-style rooms and dark narrow halls that didn’t take advantage of the spectacular views and natural light,” says designer Deborah Hancock, recalling the original circa

1988 split-level New York home she helped renovate for a couple and their four kids. Overlooking Central Park West, the spacious L-shaped duplex housed the potential for enviable picture window panoramas along three sides—a possible feature that was ideal for the homeowners who bought the place with a remodel in mind. “We have four kids,” the wife says. “We wanted an open and light family home, and to be able to host social events and not feel cramped.” Facilitating the overhaul was architect Steven Harris, who joked about needing breadcrumbs to navigate the former space. With the help of New York-based general contracting firm Uberto Construction, Harris gutted the apartment and opened up the floor plan, uncovering more windows in the process. “Our clients have a ritualized life,” the architect says. “They also observe a kosher household and have large, multigenerational Shabbat dinners every Friday night.” To accommodate this lifestyle on the main level, Harris had the muchused kitchen moved to a central location. With it now acting as the hub of the home, the public spaces, such as the formal living and dining areas, branch off one end of the kitchen, while off the other end are private spaces for casual meals and family gathering. Still, among all the rooms there remains transparency, which was paramount for the homeowners.

One notable feature of the interiors that accurately narrates the design story the clients, Hancock and Harris hoped to tell in this home is an open floating staircase suspended from above by steel rods between the living and dining spaces. “It’s such a dramatic centerpiece,” the homeowner says. “It might sound unusual to have stairs in the middle of the room, but from the stairwell, there are great views of the reservoir and the Upper East Side. The kids also perform shows on the stair landing, which doubles as extra seating when we have a crowd.” Upstairs are the family bedrooms, as well as a play hall, with built-ins for the children’s toy storage and study needs. In the latter, the ceiling features circular alcoves. “The upstairs ceilings aren’t particularly high, so we created recessed shapes to lend relief and interest wherever possible,” adds Harris. “They read like skylights and are lit from within.”

For home furnishings and architectural materials, Hancock worked with the homeowner to select family-friendly pieces that possessed clean-lined midcentury aesthetics. “It was all about striking a balance,” Hancock says. “There needed to be practical places where the kids could do messy art projects. But there also needed to be sophisticated spaces

“Texture and richness are introduced through fabrics,” Hancock says, “those that suited the family’s active lifestyle, but didn’t read as practical as they really are, like mohair velvet or silky viscose.” Even the dining room, with its multi-leafed custom-made table, has chairs in durable coated linen. Glamour is plentiful, too. The light fixtures, many of which are midcentury treasures, are especially decadent, such as the sprawling Jeff Zimmerman piece crowning the dining room. Metallic and glass accessories also abound, adding sparkle. “Most importantly, the neutral palette and simple lines keep the focus on the beautiful cityscape, but we also accented with rich jewel tones, like turquoise and amethyst,” she says. Whether relaxing at home alone or hosting a houseful of guests, the family could not be happier. Adds the homeowner, “Our home really reflects who we are and how we live.” L

s one pulls up to the entry of this 20-acre South Florida estate, an air of mystery prevails with live oaks and royal palms filtering the view. Privacy is key in this natural environment, where wildlife roam freely. Once

inside the gates, the property’s pièce de résistance begins its reveal. Winding in and around a ¾-acre pond, the road curves to the entrance of a sprawling retreat that welcomes you with the warmth and character of a bygone era. Accented with shutters and louvered doors, it hints of a West Indies island plantation. But there’s no sugarcane here. Rather, this plantation resides in Jupiter’s Ranch Colony, an exclusive community that caters to lovers of airplanes, golf and the equestrian life. The property provides a foster farm for the owners’ rescue horses, with six paddocks, a full working barn and two running sheds. “It’s our way of giving back to these animals that can’t take care of themselves,” the wife says.

Interior designer Marlene Murrah custom-designed the ottoman-cocktail table in the family room using a rug from The Carpet Boutique; it was fabricated by Casa Dio. The gray swivel Verellen chairs are from Michael Dawkins Home. When deciding on the home’s style, the owners credit a house they saw in the first South Florida edition of Luxe Interiors + Design as inspiration. So it was only natural they hire the same design team,

This veranda beckons with a John Himmel Decorative Arts sofa, ottomans and chairs from David Sutherland. Made of palm rope, they suit the tropical plantation style and lush foliage beyond. The owners love live oaks, royal palms and Bismarckia palms, so they’re planted throughout the property.

Marlene Murrah and Cesar A. Molina, to bring to life their version of tropical plantation living. “They wanted a comfortable home without formality—clean and transitional,” Murrah says. To carry out their plan, builder Marc Angles took a hands-on approach, showcasing his passion for the project in every detail. To start, he removed an existing barn where the house would reside and repurposed the wood to create the horse stables now on property. He also refurbished a second existing barn to become fully functioning. “It was a great marriage, where we all brought our strongest abilities to the table,” Angles says. “We all spoke the same language.”

That explains why the home communicates so well, from the entry gazebo, through the main house, to the pool pavilion and terraces. “It’s a rare opportunity to have all of the different components work so well together,” Molina says. And with 10 outdoor sitting areas, the home seamlessly merges the interior and exterior. A mirror-image front and back, the main home spreads out in an I-shape with French doors that open onto the picturesque landscape. Taking into account the vantage point from nearly every room, landscape designer Jorge A. Sanchez and project manager Carolyn M. Pendelton-Parker created viewsheds with foliage that lead the eye to scenic points of interest, and paired plantings with undulating ground planes. “Properties like this evolve over time,” says Sanchez. “We kept what was best to keep, removed certain trees and planted others, but always kept in mind how the owners were going to use the property.”

Absolute Hardwood Flooring’s European white oak flows upstairs to the landing on the second floor. Wall lamps from The Urban Electric Co. illuminate cabinetry filled with books waiting to be read. Guest rooms, a bar area and a home gym are also located on this level.

Book-matched rift oak panels the walls and ceiling and creates cabinetry in the husband’s office. Murrah custom-designed the sofa in a nubby gray linen from Loro Piana. Above it, Hugo Consuegra’s October is flanked by Vaughan wall lamps from Nessen Group.

From the Dominican coral-stone columns and flooring and custom finish on the rafter tails to the cypress-wood ceilings, the home’s architectural details sing. Inside, Murrah’s broad design can be seen in the space planning and interior finishes and detailing, right down to the doors. “I chose 8-foot-high solid oak doors that won’t slam because they’re so heavy,” she says. “There’s depth and substance to every aspect of the home.”

French oak flooring lays the foundation for a soothing monochromatic palette of taupe, gray and linen warmed by touches of vanilla and cognac throughout. Aside from a few custom-designed sofas, chairs and area rugs, Murrah used a majority of the owners’ pieces that she either reupholstered in linen or hemp or refinished for a more updated look. Oak was also the wood of choice for most of the cabinetry and built-ins. For the finishing touches, the couple accessorized with their existing art and antiques, such as a Regency amboyna table, an 18th-century Italian bench and the porter’s chair in the formal living room. “We always like to bring things from the past and include them in our homes,” the wife says. After a long day on the farm, the owners retire outside to the palm rope sofa and chairs on the veranda. With a mint julep or plantation punch in hand, they enjoy a little Southern comfort in the tropics. L 180 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

A rug and draperies form a neutral backdrop for the owners’ collected furnishings in the master bedroom. Antiques from England, France and America meld with new pieces, such as Murrah’s custom louvered cabinet made by Nosta that conceals a television at the foot of their American four-poster bed.

The sitting area of the master bedroom brings together an antique French chair, a tufted leather cocktail table and the owners’ sofa dressed in an earthy hemp from Fabrics & Walls. French doors open to the front of the home. Aluminum-framed for durability and easy maintenance, the French doors take on the appearance of mahogany.

[London-based Color Specialist and Creative Director of Paint & Paper Library] Speaking English: England is a place where ideas are condensed and distilled from all over the world. More than 200 languages from different nationalities are spoken daily in London alone. The aesthetic is intrinsically linked to its social history and heritage. Shop Talk: The quintessential English buy would be an Emma Bridgewater children’s tea set. Quirky, cute, original and manufactured in the traditional way. Fine Dine: I love The Wolseley, housed in a converted bank in the heart of London and designed by the late David Collins. It’s delicious brasserie-style cuisine served in a horseshoe table arrangement where you can meet, greet or simply watch the social melting pot of the great and the good from politics to theater-land. Artistic Nature: Nick Hornby is my favorite young UK sculptor who is really hot right now; interior designer Veere Grenney is the best in the business—his command for the art of living is second to none; and Louisa Mahony for painting. Museum Quality: For inspiration, I love the Victoria and Albert Museum, a design archive to dive into for days. Brighton Royal Pavilion is another museum to visit for sheer design extravagance and exotic distillation of taste. And, Dennis Severs’ House, an original candlelit museum, which is the nearest thing you can get to traveling back in time.

ITALIAN LESSONS As fourth-generation restaurateurs, the Fasano family’s Restaurante Fasano is regarded as Brazil’s best Italian eatery and the spot to be seen. The menu spans several regional cuisines, including Tuscan, Milanese, Venetian and Sardinian.

Asset Management: Brazilian people are survivors. We don’t have access to high-end technologies, so we need to be creative and know how to use our resources effectively and artfully. Dine and Design: Don’t miss Gero, designed in 1994 by architect Aurelio Martinez Flores, a Mexican with a Brazilian soul. He symbolizes the new Brazilian minimalism. The exposed brick structure is elegant, new and eternal. The food and service are also amazing. Weekend Romp: Breakfast at Santo Grao, a charming spot in the heart of Jardins. Get the carrot cake. Walk along Oscar Freire Street until you reach the Benedito Calixto Fair, which happens every Saturday. Old memorabilia, vintage furniture and a lot of cool stuff. Design Watch: Zanini de Zanine is a true genius; love the reclaimed woods pieces. My bet is Studio Fetiche by Carolina Armellini and Paulo Biacchi represented by my partner, ILMAXX, by Larissa Vanzo. We researched the cool stuff. Also, the French/Brazilian architecture group Triptyque is a new one. Shop Talk: Loja do Bispo run by Pinky Wainer, a legendary outsider artist, is a perfect place for people who enjoy humor and art. Cartel 011 for clothes, furniture and food under one roof. Conceito Firma Casa for art, design and transgression. Color War: Brazilian décors are boring, just beige and brown. I’m considered a transgressor here, to love colors. It’s a war!

Soup to Nuts: With small studios and artisans all over the country working in the craft sector and intersecting with the Indian design schools and foreigners, India is a bouillabaisse of design. Finding a place where good designers work directly with artisans is always exciting. Purchase Power: I love the hand-loomed khadi ghar shops on M.I. Road. I find stores in every town with odd assortments of hand-woven cottons and silks by the yard. It’s fun to make them up into kurtas and jackets. Anokhi has great traditional block prints and shops as well as an excellent organic restaurant in Jaipur. Also, Fab India is in all of the major towns and I love their retro-styled clothes made with hand-loomed fabrics, but watch out for shrinkage! To Market: Sometimes there is a flea market in Jaipur inside the old city on the weekends and you can find some lovely old photos and drawings if you dig around. Head through Johari Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar and keep going! Eye on Design: Alexander Gorlizki is a Brit who I met ages ago at Diggi Palace who works with Indian miniature paintings to create an alternate reality that I think I want to visit someday. Desmond Lazaro is another miniature painter who wrote an amazing book. He and his lovely wife have a cool home shop in Pondicherry called La Maison Rose. Gallery Walk: I like the Craft Museum in Delhi, as they usually have artisans from all over India in their courtyard making and you can buy right from the artisan, eliminating those pesky middlemen!
