EDITOR’S LETTER
Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.
ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.
KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.
RADAR / COLLABORATION
HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS
Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.
ANN MARIE VERING
A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.
LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER
Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.
Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.
Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment
that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

FORM + VISION
ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.
To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m
interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com
Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

esidents of Telluride, Colorado, think there’s something spellbinding in the air. Their town, a former mining location, is situated in a box canyon with towering mountain walls and a colossal waterfall. Old mining shacks still dot the landscape, which was also once embedded with lead, copper, gold and silver. “People talk about how there’s some sort of magic released by the minerals in the mountains,” says Brandon Quattrone, who cofounded Los Angeles interior design firm Consort with Mat Sanders. “The idea infiltrates. When you’re here, you’re out of breath because it’s close to ten thousand feet above sea level, but it’s more than that. You feel affected because of the environment; it’s just so intense.” Quattrone and Sanders got to experience Telluride’s bewitching effect regularly in developing the interior design for a modernist ski home belonging to their clients,
a couple with two kids. Doing their due diligence, they traveled there from Los Angeles during each of the four seasons. “The house has a lot of windows,” Sanders says. “We wanted to see how things changed during the year. In wintertime, it’s pure hot white all around you. In the fall, there’s bright yellow everywhere, and in the spring and summer, there’s the most beautiful green.” The surrounding environment is especially prominent, given the home’s remote siting. “The house is the last one on a road that dead-ends into a mountain where a mine used to be,” Quattrone says. “You can’t go any farther.” Clad with wood, stone, metal and glass, the contemporary residence—originally designed by local architect Eric Cummings of E Cummings Architect PC and built by Allison Construction—features a steeply pitched roof and was inspired by a historic local farmhouse-like

The area’s dramatic change of seasons helped inspire the interior design. Outside, the designers took advantage of the house’s remote and picturesque location by outfitting a terrace with seating by Loll Designs.
structure once used as a boardinghouse for miners. “That heritage, the architecture and the surround influenced the colors and textures we chose,” Quattrone says. “Whenever you have such a strong natural palette, you don’t want to introduce too much; we love the high-contrast colors you see in the landscape.” Inspired by the lushness of spring and summer, the designers covered the walls of the den with a deep shade of green Farrow & Ball paint. They then outfitted both the living room and den with cream-and-black wool rugs and sofas covered with vintage steel-colored military canvas. A chocolate-and-cream wool rug fills the dining room with earthy color and texture, as does a vintage rust-hued Indian rug in the entry. “The environment you see through the windows acts like a wallcovering,” Sanders says. “We wanted the interior to be able to transition with the seasons.” In addition to layering texture and adding punches of color to bring the landscape indoors, Quattrone and Sanders also created an interior that feels as though it has been collected over time. “Our clients are very casual, and so is our look,” Sanders says. “Our design was about contrasting the strength of the architecture with livable yet interesting furnishings.” For example, two white-oak coffee tables designed by Gesa Hansen function separately or fit together like puzzle pieces in the living room, which also features a pair of Hans J. Wegner iconic Circle chairs. A John Dickinson-style plaster table with animal leg-like supports lends great whimsy to the entry, and Tom Dixon glass sconces imported from England give the stairway a striking ethereal quality.

The designers also infused the spaces with one-off handpicked finds. “We love to go to flea markets,” Sanders says. “We have a vendor who sells French linens she hand-washes over and over again. We buy from her and use the fabric to make the softest throw pillow covers.” A variety of African textiles from NK Shop in Los Angeles were also repurposed for sofa pillows in the living room and the sitting area adjacent to the kitchen. “Our design approach is to get the client to trust in the things they love,” Sanders notes. “People shouldn’t think too much about putting things together in the right way. If you follow your instincts, your own taste will tie everything together in a beautiful way.” When it came to selecting artwork for the home, the wife did follow her instincts. “She is adamant about only sourcing artwork from her friends or people she knows,”
Quattrone says. During the design process, the wife took a trip to Marfa, Texas, where she purchased a minimalist sculpture by an artist she met there named Susan York. The piece is displayed in the living room, and an accompanying wall-size print of the sculpture leans in the entry. Also in the entry is a set of graphic black-and-white prints by Christopher Wool. “Most things in the house have sort of a bold punch but are still simple and uncomplicated,” Quattrone explains. “We love that. Our clients do, too.” And for as much as they appreciate cool and comfortable design, Quattrone and Sanders might love the wonder of Telluride’s landscape a little bit more. “It became one of our favorite places,” Quattrone says. “We’ve worked on a lot of homes in different cities and towns and have never fallen in love with a location more.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 147

SEASIDE STORY ONE YOUNG FAMILY’S MIDCENTURY BUNGALOW STARTS A NEW CHAPTER WITH A SECOND-LEVEL ADDITION, VIVID INTERIORS AND NEVER-ENDING VIEWS.

I
n the course of 10 years, interior designer Scott Sanders has worked on several projects for a young Manhattan couple with three daughters. So naturally, they approached him when they decided to renovate their 1 1/2-story shingled beach house in Quogue, New York. “He listens, internalizes and has a magical ability to transform a space,” says the husband about why they chose to work with the interior designer again. Sanders easily understood what the couple wanted for their 1940s bungalow: a place to relax, casually entertain and celebrate the ocean. “My clients like color, and I like color,” he says. “This was an opportunity to have fun.” However, the real fun would have to wait four years—when architectural changes could be approved by the Village of Quogue. To start, the clients tapped architect Michael Smith for the renovation, and he faced some immediate challenges—one of them being that the cottage was unusually close to the ocean and the dunes. “You’re not allowed to do that today,” says Smith, who renovated the property with builder George E. Vickers Jr. There also wasn’t much flexibility with the footprint, so they went upward instead, raising the main level for both compliance and to capture the views, thus creating a 2 1/2-story home.

“In a lot of those houses, you don’t get a panoramic view from the first floor. So, we added a floor on top of that,” Smith says. “It’s almost a new house at this point.” In the new structure, the main floor consists of the open living-and-dining area, the kitchen and two guest suites. Upstairs is the master bedroom, which faces the ocean, and the girls’ rooms and their sitting room. To take advantage of the waterfront location, porches, terraces and paths that lead from the home to the beach were added, and on the bay side is a new pool and pool house. Despite the new elements, though, there was a focus on “maintaining the beach cottage theme,” Vickers says. “The interior wall and ceiling finishes consist of various styles of wood paneling and wainscoting, all tastefully done.”
Celebrating the abundance of light now on the first level, glass doors panel the rear of the house and frame the ocean, which is also visible from the living-and-dining area. Taking a cue from the water, Sanders had his eye on a vibrant blue when he spotted a gorgeous rug in a kaleidoscope of bright blue, navy, marigold, four shades of green and three shades of yellow. “I love yellow and most people don’t use it, but it’s such a happy color, and they’re a happy family,” says Sanders. Building off that palette is a pair of wingbacks covered in Regimental Blue linen and a wood-framed armchair boasts cushions covered in yellow; another wood-frame chair plays upon the color scheme with a bright yellow-and-blue stripe. Across the spacious room, the dining area’s turquoise chairs and a painting by Clint Jukkala unify the entire space with their bold hues.
Outdoor living continues in an upholstered seating suite with pieces from Sutherland’s Peninsula collection. The pair of lounge chairs is covered in Sketch fabric in Cobalt from Hines & Company, and the sofa features a nautical navy stripe from Clarence House. The Parsons cocktail table is by Reed Bros., and the rug—a perfect complement—is the clients’ own.

Architect Michael Smith designed a railed ipe walkway that leads from the house to the beach. On the sundeck, an outdoor umbrella from Frontgate provides a little shade and references the ocean in its monochromatic hue, as do the blue glass hurricanes from Nellieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Amagansett.
The pool house is a new structure, designed in the style of the house. Landscape architect John Imbiano created a wooden boardwalk he says has a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Zen-like bend to itâ&#x20AC;? that cuts through the low-maintenance garden and beach grass. The white picket fence added an additional design element between the dune garden and the pool.

Oceanic themes continue upstairs in the master bedroom, where a beach-glass-hued wallcovering and a sand-colored rug both reference elements of the landscape. Furnishings in weathered wood follow suit in classic elegant lines, such as the bobbin bed, a wooden barrel chair and the clients’ own bench, whose rope-like pattern evokes sailing. Some of the most beautiful views, however, can be found in the kitchen, which was designed by Felton Pervier. “The windows facing the bay made for great light and a spacious feel,” says Pervier. They also overlook the pool and a dune garden created by landscape architect John Imbiano, who planted native perennials such as Montauk daisies, black-eyed Susans and bayberry shrubs. So as not to compete with the scenery, the kitchen is more subdued.
The walls, floors and wood are all light, and the countertops are a gentle blue macauba. For a pop of color, the living room armchair’s stripe repeats here on the bar chairs. The cabinetry—featuring both open and closed shelving—was finished with polished-nickel hardware, giving the space “almost a nautical feel,” says Pervier. It may have taken a few years, but the design team’s diligence has paid off, and it’s exactly what the clients were looking for in an escape from the city. “It’s where time slows down for our family,” says the husband. “And we love the color. When the vibrancy is taken together with the wallcoverings, fabrics and special lighting elements, it becomes a residence where we feel like we can be barefoot and just enjoy our own family resort.”

t’s a good thing Franklin Sirmans is an athlete. Since taking the helm of Pérez Art Museum Miami last fall, he hasn’t stopped running from the museum to the nearby AmericanAirlines Arena and down the street to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of MiamiDade County, immersing himself in the civic life befitting the premier facility. “That’s the fun thing, having so much going on at once,” he says. “The same day I arrived we had just opened an exhibit showcasing the work of Firelei Báez. There’s no routine because every day is different.” While moving boxes may be the office décor of late, within a short few months, Sirmans, a former collegiate tennis player, has already presided over his first gala, held record-breaking receptions for African American art, and seen the inauguration of Inside Out, a program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that brings high-quality reproductions of art from PAMM’s permanent collection into the community. Sirmans’ artistic bona fides shout superstar status in the contemporary art world. He comes to PAMM from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he served as department head and curator of contemporary art. While in L.A., he curated “Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada,” as well as “Fútbol: The Beautiful Game,” and oversaw major retrospectives by Glenn Ligon and Blinky Palermo. He’s also had stints at Prospect New Orleans and The Menil Collection in Houston, and co-curated a show on Basquiat at the Brooklyn Museum as an independent curator. So after traversing the country, why Miami and why now? “It’s Miami,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to be a part of the civic conversation that’s changing every day. But it’s also the building, the collection,
the staff and the curators. It’s enthralling. Our building is a major foundation for the discussion of culture here, as is the Adrienne Arsht Center.” The breathtaking structure in which he works, perched on Biscayne Bay, was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron, who presided over the Tate Modern conversion in London and 1111 Lincoln Road. Their vision of bringing “the park into the museum” is realized in a 200,000-square-foot, three-story space with moveable walls, expansive glass and horticultural life. Sirmans says the building reflects the question of how to look at and talk about art. “Museums are, at their best, catalysts for civil, humanitarian and thoughtful conversations,” he says. “They’re a place where people come together—a safe space, a town square.” As for his personal catalyst, Sirmans credits his father, whose own collection began in his office as a way to enhance the atmosphere there, highlighting predominantly American artists like Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, and then-emerging artists like Al Loving, Bill Hutson, Joe Overstreet, Camille Billops and Candace Hill-Montgomery. “I was immediately fascinated by the characters in the art world,” recalls Sirmans. “My earliest impression was that art was a vehicle to tell stories.”

T
he temptation of Spanish Colonial Revival homes is often to lay on the period furnishings to make them feel “authentic.” But going the whole Iberian nine yards—with the style’s love of all things dark, formal and heavily carved— can sometimes feel ill-suited to the casual-contemporary living that attracts people to California in the first place. That was especially true for designer Mona Hajj’s clients, an empty-nester couple from the East Coast. “Having worked with them several times in the past, I found that we all share the fact that we don’t like to take anything literally,” says the bicoastal Hajj. “We try to mix it up while 170 / LUXESOURCE.COM
always respecting the architecture of the house.” In this case, the home in question was a 1920s abode in Beverly Hills the clients had tasked architect Marc Appleton with refreshing and restoring. “The house was done with a certain amount of detail and charm,” says Appleton, who worked with senior associate Andrew Scott on the project. “Everyone wanted to keep the original architectural flavor intact.” But what Appleton initially walked into was hardly original: a pinkwalled stairwell with black risers, fussy wallpapers, a concrete patio out back, decidedly un-Spanish sliders leading to the pool, and even several doorways whose

Hajj designed the Art Deco-style gilt chair that sits atop a 19th-century Sultanabad rug in the living room; the console behind is a 19th-century Irish George III-style piece. Overlooking the grouping is a collection of custom-framed French hand-pressed flowers and leaves on a wall painted in Seashell from Benjamin Moore.
Spanish arches had been made level. “They had tried to make it modern,” says the wife of the home’s previous owners. “But we’re not retro ’70s people. We always want it to look classic but feel timeless and fresh, elegant yet simple.” Appleton’s task involved bringing a cosmetic hand to renovations, repainting everything white, lightening floors and the original ceiling beams, and stripping down the stair railing (“We took the folly out of it,” explains builder Doc Williamson of the rail, which had been overcomplicated with floral ornamentation). And because, Appleton says, “We all wanted to bring more light into the house,” the project took a much more ambitious turn. Beyond liberating the imprisoned kitchen by opening it to the family room, the plans called for cutting a large window into one wall and 174 / LUXESOURCE.COM
adding a fenestrated breakfast bay. He also replaced the family room sliders with generous, more graceful arched French doors that now open onto a new loggia. Outside, Appleton collaborated with landscape designer Lisa Zeder. For his part, he swapped in concrete for new pool coping, laid fossil creek stone in an ashlar pattern under the loggia and around the pool, and—between the house and a garage-guest cottage (which also got a complete makeover)—placed a fountain surrounded with limestone pavers neatly defined by grass borders. Zeder says, “I designed the horticultural components of the garden, choosing plant materials that were true to and complementary to the architecture while bringing in the softness the client was seeking.” She also incorporated varied shades of green with subtle infusions of color for a rich and interesting palette.

Just off the kitchen in the family room, the A. Rudin sofa’s floral upholstery complements a pair of swiveling Dessin Fournir club chairs and a blue Gregorius Pineo sofa, both from KneedlerFauchère. Chinese ceramic jar lamps from Rose Tarlow Melrose House and an early 20th-century French chandelier from Hajj’s inventory provide lighting.
Hajj took on the interiors, working, as always, instinctually. “When I put color schemes together, it’s not about matching,” she explains. “In the family room, for example, one sofa has a William Morris fabric and the other a textured dark blue material. The Tabriz carpet has nothing to do with either, but it feels good.” In the same room are a French gilt-metal chandelier, a Buddha atop a dairy table and blue-and-white pottery in niches around a built-in television cabinet. Interspersed are antique textiles, some Turkish, others English and American. “When I travel I always collect antique textiles,” she notes, adding, “I love mixing cultures. It’s calming for me.” Likewise, the living room pulls together unlikely characters that nevertheless get along famously: A 19th-century William and Mary-style sofa’s serpentine back and turned spindle legs and stretchers read vaguely Spanish, while the collection of vintage ceramics hints at the historic cultural exchanges that have happened in Spain. Yet we also find, surprisingly, custom Hajj-designed Art Deco-inspired chairs, a table rich with chinoiserie details, Khotan and Sultanabad rugs, and an English side LUXESOURCE.COM / 179

table and antique Irish consoles. “There’s a common thread, with the architecture referring to Spanish Colonial and some of the leg styles and dark woods acting as references,” says Hajj. “But they’re not literal.” A similar mix appears in the rest of the house, with a combination of Italian, English, American and Spanish furnishings accented by textiles and accessories from several stops on the Silk Road—Persia, Turkey and the like. Because this was the couple’s second home, Hajj also paid particular attention to her clients’ desire to capture an easy California lifestyle, with seating placing a premium
on comfort. “It doesn’t matter if it’s beautiful,” says Hajj of the furnishings. “If you can’t sit on a chair and enjoy it, it won’t be in their house.” In the end, against Appleton’s reinvigorated canvas, which took a tired 20th-century home and turned it into an elegant and classic residence suited to the 21st century, the results are layered and thoughtful, with Hajj achieving a careful balance in the furnishings that skews neither literal nor hyper-modern. For the designer, the process and the result are equally compelling. “I love creating,” she says, “and I love seeing it come together in the end.”

In February, Luxe Interiors + Design joined Dacor during the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas for cocktails and live music while touring the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s four custom-designed penthouse suites. Each suite, designed by Pedram Rahimi, featured Dacor’s newest collections.
