Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO
The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK
The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com
What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to
be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he
approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,
the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com
For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design
6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. After researching vintage and international public libraries, a bibliophilic couple presented Stuart Silk Architects with an unusual ask for their Issaquah, Washington, lake house: a doublestory library. Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. hen a busy Silicon Valley couple began searching for their family’s forever house, they saw more than a few impressive homes, but none of them offered what the parents of three children wanted most: a livable backyard. “I cared most about the outdoor spaces, and having the room to give my family the kind of yard that would draw us all outside,” says the wife. So, when the pair eventually found a piece of property in Los Altos Hills where a large, flat exterior was feasible, they decided their answer was to build a home from the ground up. “When I saw this particular spot, I was blown away by it,” says the wife. “My husband and I knew if we hired the right design team, we could create exactly what we’d been looking for all along, which was a house that made us feel like we were always outside.” The three-year design-and-build process began with hiring architect Steve Simpson, who is known for his ingenuity when it comes to blurring the lines between inside and out. “We were very fortunate with this particular site, because of its orientation,” says Simpson. “The back of the residence opens onto a landscape with southeastern exposure, which is ideal for sun. So we maximized natural light in the house with lots of windows, French doors and sliding doors, which not only invited all that sunshine into the main living areas, but also exposed those interior spaces to the sunny backyard.”

Simpson, working with general contractor Gary Ernst, designed a home composed of stucco and limestone, where public areas open onto one another and natural light beams from one side to another. The absence of compartmentalized rooms helped the architect deliver a casual contemporary vibe, although the detailing in every space—from the geometric soffit details in the ceilings to the ornate custom stairwell—punctuates the home with sophistication. “The house is part modern and part traditional, with a little Mediterranean DNA in its bones and sparkle in its interiors, thanks to Linda Sullivan,” says Simpson, who brought the designer onto the project in its nascent stages. “It was, from the beginning, a true collaboration.” Sullivan, who has worked on many residences with Simpson in the Bay Area, wanted to create interiors that were sophisticated and serene—and didn’t distract from the views each space was designed to frame. “We kept to a fairly neutral palette, with a few surprise colors here and there,” she says. Deep indigo blue barstools deliver visual impact in the monochromatic kitchen, for instance, while the same color outfits the cabinetry around the bar. A lavender sofa adds an unexpected punch to the living room. “Practicality was always top of mind,” adds Sullivan. “The clients were very specific about their desire for this to be a place where their children and their children’s friends could come and go from inside to outside, wet bathing suits and all, without having to feel too protective about the furnishings. They didn’t want anybody tip-toeing around the house.” To that end, Sullivan made “livable luxury” her design mantra for this project. Sleek lines on furnishings give a nod to luxury, while performance upholstery promises longevity. Contemporary case goods such as consoles, desks and coffee tables boast minimalistic silhouettes, while backsplashes in the kitchen and bar deliver an element of glamorous surprise. Clean, white walls juxtapose with warm wood paneling and millwork throughout the spaces. These contrasts keep things from feeling contrived, explains Sullivan. “We weren’t trying to make this house fit into a certain theme,” she says. “Instead, we wanted to come up with a design plan that would stand the test of time—as well as lots of indoor-outdoor living.” The result matches the client’s early vision. “The transition is so seamless that when you’re inside you feel like you’re outside, and when you’re outside, you feel like you’re inside,” says the wife. “Every day, I watch my children playing in the backyard and every single day I feel more and more grateful that this is the place we get to call home.”

To turn up the elegance volume in the living room, Sullivan injected lavender notes with a custom sofa by Kroll and a bubble chandelier by Oly Studio. Wesley Hall armchairs also feature a hint of the hue in their pattern. A leather chaise, also by Oly Studio, provides seating without obstructing the sight line toward the dining room.

Because of the proximity to water, Sullivan chose performance fabrics on the Kroll sofa and Lee Industries armchair for posterity. ucked behind a ramble of untamed Kiawah Island dunes and swept by salted Atlantic breezes, a stately residence stretches across a triple lot on the South Carolina coast—a site simultaneously grand, yet intimate. Cueing to the celebrated Shingle-style architecture of the Northeast— namely the illustrious Montauk and Southampton dwellings of McKim, Mead & White—architect Roger Seifter had authored the home’s original plans back in 1996, so he was already intimately familiar with the building when the new owners asked him to return for its recent renovation. Hoping for a project with twin familiarities, the couple happily tapped Tammy Connor, their designer of more than 12 years, for the interiors. “Each time we have worked with Tammy, we’ve found the process enormously rewarding,” the wife expresses. “We have developed a shorthand in our process, and this comes from her knowing that we want our homes to be warm, welcoming and easy.” Although the project marked Seifter’s first time working with the clients, he understood their needs just as innately. “They wanted a team with a historic knowledge of the house and an empathy for it,” explains the architect, who experienced quite a case of déjà vu upon touring it for the first time with its new owners. Because the home had been unaltered over the years, “it was a bit like a time warp,” he recounts. “I couldn’t help but look around with a critical eye; the residence had aged very well, but I noticed things I might have done differently. In my mind, this was a chance to make up for missed opportunities.” Observing how well the original building materials had weathered, Seifter—along with senior associates Chris Dickson and Victoria Baran—opted to retain the home’s rich mahogany trim and cedar shingles, even returning to the same fabricator who fashioned its original windows to ensure a match in style and quality. Spearheading these improvements was general contractor Nicholas T. Grossman, who, though not a native Carolinian, brought seasoned knowledge of the subtropical climate and its oft-unforgiving conditions, suggesting treatments for the exterior that would

safeguard the residence from the elements. Indoors, Seifter says, “Nick provided a running commentary on how to best tailor the modern systems to combat the island’s frequently oppressive heat and humidity.” Because lifestyles had changed since the first set of plans were drawn decades ago, the interior architecture needed tweaking to improve flow and set the stage for casual entertaining. So, too, did the design team answer the clients’ request for a dedicated pool room. “It was a sizable addition,” explains Seifter. “And since we didn’t want it to look like ‘the tail was wagging the dog,’ we placed it behind the pergola.” While her collaborators continued to peel away dated elements, Connor and senior designer Lauren Jones worked closely on interior details. Since the designer counts the Shingle style among her favorite disciplines, the envelope of the house delighted her. “It’s exciting when the architecture falls in line with the history of a vernacular,” Connor notes. “If you understand where the home is coming from architecturally, it will tell you where it needs to go.” To complement its Arts & Crafts classicism, Connor sourced furnishings she knew would feel soulful. “We brought in antiques to echo the timelessness we knew the rooms could express,” she says. “We were after serenity because the clients wanted a respite from city life in the Northeast. We took our cues from nature, letting the beach and the landscape drive interior design decisions.” Subtle coastal references range from grass-cloth wallcoverings and coral objets d’art to a hanging bed punctuating the spacious wraparound porch. Since the home is essentially one room deep, “every room has a unique view,” Seifter adds. Echoes the wife: “I never wanted to lose sight of the idea that the beach is calling you, no matter where you are in the house.” Landscape architect Cindy Cline pinpointed ways to enhance these picturesque surroundings. “The renovated home sits beautifully on its site, so we created a plan that would better relate to its new proportions,” she explains. An allée of elm trees now leads to a formal drive court where potted lemon trees greet guests at the door. A generous lawn complements the residence’s improved sense of grandeur before rolling landforms planted with native grasses that direct the eye toward a protected dunescape. In the end, the venture achieved precisely what Seifter had hoped for: a home that will endure for decades more. Connor believes the project’s tranquil countenance comes from design professionals who checked their egos at the door, as well as owners who were passionate about creating an extraordinary refuge. For Connor’s longtime clients, the success of the residence came as no surprise. “Tammy has a way of gently guiding me to try something I couldn’t have imagined, and I never regret those choices,” says the wife. “She and Roger created beautiful and relaxed spaces throughout the house, and it’s always amazing to me how you can look around and find that no detail is left undone— without being overdone.” Done and done, indeed.

andy feet feel just right to Anne Darby Parker. As soon as the weather warms up, she moves her easel outside of her Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, studio and paints in the sand and sun. “That’s where I do my best work,” says the Lowcountry native, who grew up on neighboring Isle of Palms, summered on Kiawah Island and has lived most of her life surrounded by water. Here, the tidal rhythms, gentle sea breeze and laughing gulls are constants that anchor her artistic sensibilities. Despite a background in plein air painting, Parker’s landscapes are emotional, not representational, and her work is focused on the body and, more specifically, the gestural female form. “For a while I was combining plein air and figurative together, but there’s something about the live model that I respond to,” Parker says. “I’m absorbing and translating her information and energy; it’s like entering a meditative space, a sort of flow.” Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that Parker’s semiabstract works are an ode to a feminine strength and sensuality—qualities she links to the warmth and tenacity of her area’s wind-swept barrier islands. Although Parker took up knitting as her original artistic pursuit at age 3, it wasn’t until her husband’s studies at Harvard brought them to Boston that she finally entered the creative field—as a professional black-and-white portrait photographer. Before long, though, she was painting atop her photos, cutting them up and collaging. “I was just fighting the urge to paint,” admits the mother of three, who is currently represented at Charleston Artist Collective, Birmingham’s Gallery 1930 and Bee Street Gallery in Dallas. Fifteen years later, she’s finding freedom in experimenting with mixed media on larger canvases, beginning with acrylic and graphite before adding final “lushness” with oil. In a recent series, she embraced nonclassical hues like hot pink. Likewise, her instinct for art placement in the context of interiors is on full view within the turnof-the-century cottage she shares with her husband, Scott Parker, an urban planner and landscape architect at Charleston-based DesignWorks. “One of my favorite things is taking a car-load of paintings to someone’s home and helping them see what I see. I believe bathrooms and kitchens should have great art; forgotten little corners with the right light should have just the right piece,” she says. “I have this sense of where paintings would look really good—it thrills me.”

move to New York City often comes early in life with nothing but a suitcase in hand and a dream in heart. But for a couple who had lived most of their married life in rural New Jersey, the impetus arrived when their three grown children left the nest. “We were figuring out what we were going to do with the rest of our lives,” the wife recalls. Having lived briefly in New York City after graduating from college, she had long pined for a return to the West Village. So, it seemed serendipitous when they came upon a gracious corner condo unit with 11-foot ceilings and a primo location. The move came with a fresh start design-wise. After putting all the furnishings from their former home into storage, the couple hired designer Timothy Brown to devise a sleek downtown ethos befitting of their new chapter. “They had a vision of how they wanted to live in a city apartment,” Brown notes. “We decided to use rich wood tones and pops of color to build a playful yet sophisticated environment.” Adds the wife, “Our home in New Jersey was a mishmash of different design styles that sort of worked together. In New York, I wanted something with a little bit more style that was energetic and artistic.” A sense of energy and distinct point of view are apparent immediately upon entering the apartment, thanks to Brown’s decision to panel the foyer in sheets of laminated, textured mirrored glass—a herculean task executed by builder

Inwardly situated, the thoroughfare called for something dramatic yet practical. “It was all about how we could add a little more light and sparkle,” he explains. “It’s glamorous, but not too glamorous—and it makes the space feel so much bigger.” It was the smoky undertones of the mirrored glass foyer that inspired the unexpected hits of purple, pink and blue that would lace the home together. To offset the traditionally feminine hues found in focal details like the aubergine drapes in the great room and magenta rugs in the hallway, the designer stuck to dark wood and upholstered pieces with strong, clean lines set against a sea of moody grays and textured whites. Venetian plaster, felt and grass-cloth treatments imbue the walls with visual depth while providing a neutral canvas for the couple’s compelling art additions— many of which are large-scale photographic works curated by art consultant Ann Yaffe Phillips—to take center stage. Technically a three-bedroom apartment, the clients opted for a different configuration—one that would play to their daily routines as a household of two versus five. Alongside Brown, plans were made for an airy master bedroom flanked by posh his-and-hers offices, each outfitted with a sofa that pulls out to a comfortable bed when the children or friends pay them a visit. Another decadent decision: the dining area-adjacent dry bar, which Brown fashioned around a cumbersome structural column. Filling the formerly dead nook, the walnut-topped Corian bar does double duty as a cocktail hub by evening and a casual breakfast spot by morning. “It’s so simple, but so perfect,” the wife shares. “I always marvel at how Timothy made something beautiful out of nothing.” Since the wife was particularly attuned to the sensory experience of each living space, Brown had much of the furniture custom made. The bedside tables, for example, are within optimum reach of their raised smart mattress and her office desk and chair allow for her to sit cross-legged in meditation. It was equally important that all textiles— from the rugs underfoot to the throw pillows on sofas—be exceptionally soft and tactile. While indeed a fresh start for the couple, Brown is quick to clarify that the new city roost is still a thorough reflection of their personalities. “She’ll wear a white T-shirt and leather jacket while arranging flowers,” Brown shares of the wife, likening her own “edgy sophistication” to the finished feel of the apartment itself. “It’s refined,” he adds of his handiwork, “but it’s fun, too.”
