AUTUMNAL BEGINNINGS IN THE HAMPTONS

After becoming the director of Amagansett Applied Arts, Elizabeth Dow moved her wallcoverings and textile company from New York City to the East End. A few years later, she relocated once more, to a location in East Hampton—which today houses her personal art studio, textiles, hand-painted wallcoverings and interior design offices. To say she’s an expert on the Hamptons would be an understatement. Asked to detail the beloved locale’s fall atmosphere, Dow points to a thoughtful consideration of the future. “In the fall, residential projects tend to be larger and more long-term, as we look toward the new year,” she says. “Homeowners are deciding to renovate rather than move. Each day, the Hamptons becomes more of a yearround community.”

Could you describe, in three words, the Hamptons in the fall? Light, crisp and quiet. What makes it unique? The light is at its best. There is nothing like the fall color here, especially if we are lucky enough to experience an Indian summer. How do you prepare for the season? I fill the store with warm throws and cozy pillows, great candles, accessories and good books.

Known for innovative, modern design, Barnes Coy Architects is an award-winning firm, based in Bridgehampton and led by principals Robert Barnes and Christopher Coy. The company serves clients throughout the Hamptons and beyond, from Florida to California to the Caribbean, and Barnes and Coy are well-versed in the mentality within each of these locations. The Hamptons, they say, has grown every year since it first gained notoriety as a resort colony in the 1890s. “The Hamptons is fast becoming a year-round destination,” Barnes says. “Our practice has a stable project workload throughout the year.” Employing the simple and consistent philosophy that “forms are generated by the interaction between the site context and requirements of the client,” Barnes Coy Architects produces original, customized work that enables its clients’ full enjoyment of the legendary East End.

THE HAMPTONS’ MODERN AGE A leader in innovative techniques, Barnes Coy Architects has been at the forefront of the modern architectural movement in the Hamptons. “During the early 1990s, due to the difficulty builders had understanding and accurately bidding on innovative designs, we not only designed, but also built our projects,” Coy says. “While this is no longer the case, we pride ourselves on our technical knowledge of construction and practicality in budgeting and use of materials.” 1. Designed for an architecture enthusiast, this home is a carefully sculpted object placed on a flat, 10-acre field. Afforded by the privacy of the site, total transparency expresses the spatial importance of a pure space defined by a robust frame. 2. Materials, such as cedar and mahogany paneling, teak doors and hand-pulled plaster walls, add warmth to the interior space.

Farrell Building Company 2317 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, New York 631.537.1068 | farrellbuilding.com

When it comes to understanding the Hamptons and its history, few possess the unique perspective of Joe Farrell. His namesake firm, Farrell Building Company, was founded 25 years ago, after he left a successful career on Wall Street for the allure of the East End. With passion, acumen and multidisciplinary expertise, Farrell revolutionized the building process and made his firm’s signature blue-and-white brand iconic within the Hamptons. Working with strict timelines and the utmost quality in mind, Farrell and his team adhere to a philosophy inspired by their location and its homeowners. “Over 400 Farrell clients would agree: No one wants to miss a summer weekend,” Farrell says. Still, he notes, “The summer house is now the country house and is being used on a year-round basis, giving us a more diverse off-season community.”

ESSENTIAL TO THE LOCAL LIFESTYLE “The fishing and farming communities are two of our greatest assets year-round,” Farrell says. “The commercial boats operate 365 days a year, bringing us continuous ‘dock-to-plate’ options. I can’t say enough about our local farming community, and I do believe the importance and support of both are overlooked outside the summer months.”

James Merrell Architects 66 Main Street, Post Office Box 210, Sag Harbor, New York 631.725.9842 | jamesmerrellarchitects.com

While the Hamptons is known for its legendary summer season, it shows signs of becoming more of a year-round destination. This makes architect James Merrell’s core philosophy—to design timeless homes with sustainability and all seasons in mind—more essential than ever. The principal behind James Merrell Architects in Sag Harbor, Merrell has been crafting architectural masterpieces in the Hamptons for nearly three decades. “I started my practice in the Hamptons in 1988, because there is so much support here for architectural design and creative experimentation,” Merrell says. “For the last century, the Hamptons has proudly debuted, and embraced, all the arts.” As it fosters this inventive ethos, the area simultaneously honors its history, with traditional celebrations for nearly every national holiday and historic homes scattered throughout the various villages.

DESIGNING FOR ALL SEASONS

“It’s easier to design a house for one season—the summer—but the Hamptons is increasingly a year-round community,” Merrell says. “And, from a psychological standpoint, the fall speaks to us differently than the summer. Fall brings to the design process an interiority to which summer is indifferent.” Merrell notes that, when designing with fall in mind, homeowners are more concerned with spaces for reflection than those for activity. Libraries and dens, with a cozy atmosphere, become more important.
