D
oes beauty matter? I recently listened as a designerfriend reflected on the perception by many that decorative pursuits can feel like a frivolous concern. Certainly practical matters of daily life—the commute
to the office, the contract awaiting signature, the phone call you need to return—can eclipse our quotidian attentiveness to art and beauty. With designer Jamie Drake at the Flexform showroom in New York.
I would encourage, however, that each of us make time to thoughtfully observe and pursue beauty, art and design in earnest, and tend to it often. Beauty, as expressed through architecture and design, has a profound impact on our consciousness. Structures and façades, space planning, landscaping, interiors, furniture, lighting, and art offer up a daily dose of inspiration, inciting emotions and reactions: delight and

summer. Welcome to the Summer 2013 edition of Luxe Interiors + Design; our tenth issue in the New York market, and our largest one yet. Another first this summer was our partnership with artMRKT Hamptons as the official media and design sponsor for this mid-July event. We’re also partnering with artMRKT for events that will be held in Houston, Miami and San Francisco. This spring was quite busy in Manhattan, where we engaged the design community at a panel on custom rug design at Doris Leslie Blau, hosted a block party to kick of the D&D Building’s Spring Market, and held an event with Boffi in their SoHo showroom to celebrate the opening night of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. We wrapped up the season by commemorating Ligne Roset’s 40th anniversary and toasting designer Cindy Rinfret at her book signing in Greenwich. After so many exciting celebrations, it’s important to take time to slow down this summer. I plan on planting my annual vegetable garden with my youngest son and am also looking forward to getting settled into our new offices with our Luxe team and working together on fun initiatives for the upcoming year. By September I hope to be able to enjoy the fruits of my summer labor, both at home and at work, and I hope you are able to do the same. Wishing you a relaxing and fruitful summer.

Is there anything in particular that you are working on right now? I’m thrilled to be working on a wide array of projects, from historic 100-year-old landscape renovations to custom green roof designs.
What is your favorite material to design with? I’m drawn to plant materials such as evergreens and perennials with deep inky tones, as they infuse a landscape with shimmer and texture.

According to Kathryn Herman, a property’s landscape design should function as a direct reaction to its architectural conventions. For the layout of this Tudorstyle compound’s sprawling grounds, the Greenwich-based landscape architect was inclined to devise an English-inspired garden. VERTICAL THINKING Debbie Kotalic visits Worth Avenue often. But, she’s not in Palm Beach to admire the fashion-centric vitrines. There’s a much more visually stimulating display that inspires passersby to stop, shoot a pic on their iPhone, and ponder the site of an 840-square-foot vertical garden. “It’s a very tight abstract that both counters and complements the avenue’s sprawling bougainvillea and breezy palm trees,” Kotalic says. “Everyone sees something different. It’s similar to when people look at the same cloud. What they envision isn’t necessarily the same.” A landscape designer for green wall specialists GSky Plant Systems, Kotalic is intimately familiar with every aspect of this wall. After all, she devised it, and even included a hidden optical illusion within its leafy façade. “I’ll give you a hint...it’s very Palm Beach,” teases Kotalic, who collaborated with the Garden Club of Palm Beach and landscape architecture firm Sanchez & Maddux. Behind its allure lies an intricate network of irrigation and maintenance systems that ensures the installation retains its wonder. As for the Rorschach-inspired camouflage, further gaze reveals (at least to us) a wind-bent palm tree, swaying fronds and all.

breathing room. I am always inspired by sculpture, and when you go to a sculpture opening, there’s room to walk around the pieces. MUSIC IS KEY for me. For our Hervé Van der Straeten show in New York, we chose Billie Holiday and Count Basie. For Ruben Toledo in Los Angeles, we had a little fun and played early Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Music is the exclamation point to the mood we’re trying to create. I’VE BEEN WORKING with Vicente
Wolf as my interior designer for many years. My house is a little more conventional than the showrooms, but “less is more” is a theme at Pucci, and it’s a theme in my home. THE LAST THREE designers I’ve

a shrub and they’re suddenly paralyzed. “Because you’re working with nature, there is an innocence about it,” explains Nievera. “It’s different than buying a 17th-century commode.” In the designer’s own home, grass takes the spot of an Oushak rug, Murano chandeliers are swapped for dimly lit lanterns, and silver Lamium leaves add a metallic glint. “There’s no agenda in landscape design” says Nievera. “It’s more about the simple pleasure of enjoying the outdoors.” Sharing in his clients’ pure unadulterated happiness is what makes him tick. “Bad lighting is a social repellent,” warns designer Helen Gifford, “people just scurry away from it.” But when it comes to her own custom lighting brand, HelenBilt, Gifford’s storied clientele need not worry. Launching her line upon graduating from Parsons School of Design in 2000, Gifford has

quickly gained a following of Hollywood starlets and famed architects alike. Bringing together factory function and the outré geometry of nature, the designer creates lighting installations in a style she describes as “industrial beach.” Gifford works to “harmonize aesthetic with lifestyle,” making fixtures both beautiful and functional. Based in the Hamptons, the company is best known for its Urchin collection, which now includes an eco-friendly version. But she hasn’t stopped there; she recently launched a collection of hand-painted wallpapers. “I realized I needed to offer wallcoverings that furthered the effect of the lighting fixtures,” Gifford explains. oteworthy hotels and resorts typically bust through design convention, yielding interior and architectural declarations that push the boundaries beyond residential projects. Both
creatively looser and more experimental in nature, these hotel designs’ bold assertions are definitely something to write home about, especially when an A-list decorator is at the helm. At the Viceroy Anguilla, Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler employed unexpected contrasts of natural, neutral-hued elegance where rugged driftwood intermingles with finely honed stone; and white, black and gold interplay with the blue Caribbean waters. The resort’s Sunset Lounge, overlooking the bay, is brimming with a myriad of design nuggets. painted glass. “When I design a hotel, I look to create a mood specific to that property,” says Rottet. “I felt in this particular location that keeping with the 1940s and ’50s inspiration was appropriate.” Naples, Florida-based designer Jett Thompson also approached the Scarp Ridge Lodge’s décor, particularly that the kitchen, with an aesthetic in line with the boutique hotel’s Crested Butte, Colorado, locale. A take on the all-white kitchen, Thompson warmed up the potentially stark palette by working with blonde woods and almond-hued cabinetry and accents.

spirited approach to design that’s captured our attention. Encouraged by the lush equatorial gardens on the grounds of luxury resort Karma Jimbaran, Grounds Kent Architects embraced the untamed environment when creating this serene soaking retreat. Cast out of a unique blend of terrazzo, marble and
sandstone, the organically shaped bath echoes the design sensibility consistent throughout the property. “The villas are built to follow the design of a traditional courtyard found in a Bali village,” explains Martin Grounds, lead architect on the project. A wide stone path dotted with river rocks connects to the freestanding, open-air tub, overhung with palms and frangipanis, while the imposing stonewall anchors the retreat giving way to the natural plant inhabitants. The awardwinning Australian firm found inspiration amidst the lush tropical landscape and peacefully nestled this stunning display of classic Balinese architecture. “There is something truly luxurious about an outdoor bath in the sweet Bali air.”

ike many homes ripe for a renovation, this 1970s Hampton Bays residence had long suffered an identity crisis. Its former owners had inflicted a heavy hunting lodge aesthetic upon it, complete with wall-mounted
deer heads, paisley wallpaper and dark mahogany floors. Luckily, when the house went on the market, a Manhattan couple— he’s a financier, she’s in the film industry—recognized its charm and potential. “It was a big house with unbelievable water views and we thought it would be a fantastic place to host family and friends,” says the wife. “But we knew it needed some work.” What started out as a small-scale, four-month remodel—ready just in time for a Memorial Day barbecue—soon morphed into an extensive rehab. Although the scope of the project shifted dramatically, the deadline was resolute, and designer Steffani Aarons and architect Steven Wakenshaw were hired to conquer the monumental task.

The family room feels like it’s floating on a cloud thanks to a Tibetan sheepskin flokati rug from ABC Carpet & Home. A Sloane sofa by Vladimir Kagan Couture adds to the luxurious setting. Kravet’s Riad Caribbean fabric used for the drapes and the Lee Jofa Labyrinth Duck Egg upholstery on the Kagan High Barrel chairs add a touch of color to the space.

Working alongside them was builder John Devito, who noted, “While our team worked some very late nights to meet the deadline, a lot of the credit goes to the design team. Because of such a streamlined communication process, we were able to complete a project in four months that would usually take a year.” Wakenshaw restored the multicolored, gingerbread-like exterior to its quintessential Hamptons glory using weathered cedar shingles. He also ousted the large, densely mullioned windows in favor of expansive panes that liberated the sun and the views. “The existing house definitely had a rather muddled aesthetic,” says the architect. “But we simplified the house to harmonize better with its surroundings.” Also restored to their full Hamptons glory were the outdoor areas, which Wakenshaw collaborated on with landscape designer Stephen Tupu. “The site was big enough to allow us to really create a variety of exterior spaces that fulfill many purposes for the family throughout the day,” explains Tupu. “Spaces like the outdoor dining area, the terrace and the pool serve as a prime play area for the kids, but easily transition into chic entertaining areas for the adults in the evening.”

Inside, the dark floors were replaced with hardwearing white oak, which also contributed to the brightening of the home and its beachy vibe. While the homeowners desired some kind of nautical tribute for the décor, they preferred a subtler approach. “We didn’t want the house to be inundated with shells and anchors,” says the wife, who asked Aarons to derive inspiration for the interior design from two silk pillows she picked up in Thailand—their vibrant hues representing the sun (orange) and water (turquoise). In the combined kitchen and dining room, for example, turquoise shows up in the Ann Sacks Gotham tiles that line the backsplash— their embossed pattern simulating a rippling water effect. Surrounding the glass-topped Paul Mathieu dining table are iconic Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs in a saturated aqua blue.

White lacquered cabinets and sleek Caesarstone countertops serve as a blank canvas to showcase the home’s trademark colors. The turquoise Gotham tiles by Ann Sacks create an aquatic backsplash and the Onda counter stools from Design Within Reach feature a burst of orange.
Forgoing the formal dining room, this casual kitchen nook adds to the home’s breezy vibe. A set of Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs in a rich turquoise picks up on the water just beyond the expansive new panes. A Paul Mathieu table from Ralph Pucci International takes up little visual real estate, and is part of a supporting cast for the main attraction outside.

To make sure that the home’s trademark colors would pop, they were anchored into a monochromatic background. Strong silhouettes in the form of, say, the living room’s partially domed Jens Risom Big chairs— a modern take on the classic wing variety—and the crescent-shaped Vladimir Kagan Couture sofa in the family room help create sculptural interest in such a neutral context. In the master bedroom, however, the ocean shading is, well, left to the ocean. Thanks to the room’s corner location, a curtain wall of glass provides a vast panorama of the water. “You almost feel like you’re on a boat,” says Aarons, who dressed the room in tones of gray and white to play up the deep blue outside, but included soft and shaggy textures to evoke warmth and comfort—a clever tactic that keeps the view from stealing the show. The master bath is more overt about such things; a vibrant blue and green mosaic tile wall from Italy is practically a floorto-ceiling art piece—an unapologetic, and very pretty, attention seeker.

Color isn’t the only element providing depth throughout the home. A myriad of textures, a vast flokati rug, for instance, gives the family room a billowy air; the white lacquered kitchen cabinets are a slick touch; and the new stone fireplaces go a long way toward building character in what could be considered a brand-new house. However, it’s the family’s prized possessions, ranging from Aboriginal paintings to edgy black-and-white photography, that genuinely create dimension in the home. “It’s these layers of our lives that make a house feel truly lived-in,” says Aarons. I
n a leafy community in eastern New Jersey, a couple found a home that would suit their growing family. The 100-yearold East Coast cedar shake house had no shortage of charms, including a steeply pitched roof and gables, generous rooms
and lovely architectural details. So, at least initially, the couple could overlook the home’s tiny kitchen and decidedly feminine decoration— a collage of pink and mint green chintz and flowered wallpaper. Upon settling in, though, they began renovating the home to suit their taste and modern lifestyle, tackling a few rooms at a time and enlisting the help of interior designer Frank Webb, who had once worked for the husband in finance, and his partner Matthew White. “It was fun, because they were with us in the early days of our design business, and we all kind of grew together,” Webb says. Webb and White started with the entryway and family room, blending traditional elements with modern flair. “I think one reason that the homeowners were attracted to us—besides knowing and loving

Frank—was that I’m more the classicist and Frank is a modernist,” White says. “They had a big traditional old house built in 1905, and they didn’t want to ignore that. What we brought to the table was an

understanding of antiques, but with a fresh outlook.” Because the couple and the design duo are good friends, they all survived some light-hearted tussling. “The homeowners had some leather pieces that they were convinced had to stay, and that we were convinced had to go, and we finally won out on that,” White quips. Thanks to the designers’ expert touch—and the couple’s well-behaved kids—the design works for the whole family. “We wanted to have nice things, but we have too much traffic in our house to have a home that’s a museum,” the husband says. “There aren’t any rooms that are off-limits to anybody.” LUXE INTERIORS

Eventually, it was time to revamp the small kitchen. The renovation— coordinated by builder Ernst Hofmann, who marshaled the architecture and contracting services on the project—led to a major expansion of the home across all three floors and the basement, which now features a striking mudroom and a gym. “We removed the entire back wall of the house and extended the kitchen by about 12 feet,” says Hofmann. “We then added several large windows and French doors to the kitchen space.” Hofmann’s team also incorporated custom millwork to artfully blend the addition with the existing home. That millwork includes a striking octagonal coffered ceiling that White and Webb designed. “Ceilings are always a fun way to add visual interest in an underused way,” White says. LUXE INTERIORS

Now flooded with natural light, the kitchen is dressed in cheerful hues of citron and sky blue. “It’s bright, open and very functional,” the husband says. “There’s a flow around the island, and there are a lot of places for people to sit and congregate.” And the kitchen wasn’t the only place to get a jolt of color. The living room received neutral tones, but elsewhere, the palette got dialed up. “We definitely embraced color,” the wife says. “I think it’s youthful and fresh, and it brings the whole space alive.” The dining room walls, for example, were painted a deep blue that complements the couple’s china pattern. The designers added personal touches throughout the home, from the butler’s pantry’s leaded-glass window emblazoned with a fleur-de-lis and the homeowners’ initial, to an overscale daffodil photo that White took. “We have an arboretum down the street, and they have a huge daffodil bowl,” the wife says. “That’s one of our first memories of living on this street, so it ties it all together beautifully.” L

y clients have always loved Shelter Island and its getaway atmosphere,” says interior designer Sara Story of the summer residence she recently completed for a New York-based professional
couple with two young kids. “They wanted me to create a retreat for them, a relaxing place where they could spend time with their family and friends.” For inspiration, Story did not need to look far. The coastal cedarshingle home designed by architect Joshua Brandfonbrener sits three stories tall on a bluff above the ocean. When Story first came on board, ground had not yet been broken, but the natural beauty was ever-present. “Shelter Island has these lovely bands of vegetation from coastline to water’s edge: cedar groves, sassafras trees, beach grasses,” Brandfonbrener says. “My goal was to ease the house into the topography, and make it feel private, while maximizing the scenery.”

Most rooms, including the upstairs bedrooms, have ocean views. The principal level, which encompasses the kitchen, dining and living rooms, is also connected along the exterior by a 78-foot main terrace, overlooking the sea and creating an indoor-outdoor circulation loop. “I wanted the interiors to be very neutral and for the focus to be on the spectacular scenery outside,” says Story. “I took my palette from the sky, beach, water and trees.” The flooring is of white oak, complementing the casual chic beach décor. The walls are mostly a creamy hue with minimal moldings, serving as a backdrop to clean-lined transitional furnishings.

Seating is upholstered in comfortable fabrics with stain-resistant finishes. Patterns are used sparingly, either simple geometric variations or abstract organic shapes. In the serene sand-and-shell-hued living room, silk area rugs add warmth to the floors, linen curtain panels subtly frame expansive window-walls and delicate sheers filter sunlight as needed. “The living room is a large rectangular space, so I broke it up by creating two separate sitting areas,” Story says. “The immediate family uses the more casual one centered around the fireplace. The other, which is slightly more formal, works well when they host social events.” 222 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

“I wove in metal accents, too,” Story adds. “Especially in a neutral space, you can create drama and interest with metals. Bronze, brass, iron and nickel can all be reflective.” Story also uses the material in her bold yet airy light fixtures, lending rooms focal points. Lacquered finishes are another way the décor’s quiet neutrality is countered. There is a surge of saturated color by way of the lime green chair seats and curtain panels in the dining room, as well as the peacock blue wallpaper hand painted with a botanical theme. It works perfectly for more formal dinner parties at the beach. “For casual dining, I designed a perforated leather corner banquette in the kitchen,” says

Though the cedar-shingled house presents a traditional façade on the street side, it possesses a contemporary look on the waterfront with stainless-steel rails and a terraced-stone arcade. The exterior stone veneers are by Charles Luck.

The master bedroom’s balcony sits peacefully above the treetops and boasts ocean views uninterrupted by the railings (placed horizontally for this reason). A B&B Italia Canasta chair and Janus et Cie Trennza lounge chair sit atop 24-by-24-inch wood deck tiles by Bison.

kitchen’s adjacent enclosed porch which overlooks the pool and pool house, other outdoor areas include the master suite’s private balcony and the patio directly beneath the main terrace, with its base block-pillars, which add visual separation between the downstairs den and guest suites. “I created a lot of different ways to experience the captivating exterior,” Brandfonbrener says. “On the waterfront, there are modern windowwall openings with panoramic views, as well as balconies with linear

stainless railings enhancing the sight lines.” Builder Steve Christie adds of the main terrace, “What made it special was the bluestone finish over the steel and cement arcade foundation. There’s even up-lighting in the floor for parties at night!” The resulting house is harmonious in design and at one with its environment. “The homeowners are really happy,” Story says, adding, “They originally thought it would just be their summer house, but they now use it for all kinds of occasions year-round.” L

would rather be poor in a cottage full of books than a king without the desire to read,” said the 19th-century English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay. Fortunately, this was a choice the owner of this house in the Long Island hamlet of
Manhasset never had to face. While he may not have imperial lineage, he is royalty in his field—the theater—where he has produced some of the biggest hits on Broadway and London’s West End. “He’s an Anglophile and loves to read,” confirms designer Sandra Nunnerley. “So the house has lots of perches to sit with a book.” The stunning testament to her client’s avocation is an impressive library with a design appropriately informed by a famous musical. “Remember that handsome paneled library in My Fair Lady where Henry Higgins teaches Eliza Doolittle how to properly pronounce ‘the rain in Spain?’ ” asks Nunnerley. “That was our inspiration.” When he went looking for a home, says the client, “I was a single man living with three children” (all now at college). “It had to have a masculine feel, but not overly so,” he says, “and I didn’t want it to be too formal. I had lived in London for eight years and liked the English cottage sensibility.” He thought he’d found these qualities, says architect Arthur S. Pier, in a circa 1960s ranch that in the ‘80s had received a “faux Georgian brick veneer.” Though ambitious original plans called for major refacing, recalls Pier, “The owner decided he didn’t want to draw attention, so he liked the fact that what was presented on the exterior was not much,

and that the surprise was inside.” Creating that surprise, however, took two years because the team discovered “it had been poorly built and spaces were haphazardly linked.” Pier and Nunnerley brought rationality to the floor plan by creating more classical Georgian axes off a central entry stair (also redesigned) and opening the rear façade to the outdoors with French doors and patios. Kids’ rooms went upstairs, while their father’s suite remained on the ground floor, adjacent, by request, to his library, which the team made double height and paneled. “The extent of the millwork was extraordinary,” explains builder Edward Reis, who actually made and applied the veneers. “The French walnut in the library is very high-end and not available in bulk. The trees grow wildly, not straight up, so the perfect pieces are rare.”

A mahogany Sheraton table sits under Charles Paris’ Arceaux chandelier and is paired with antique dining chairs. Opposite the dining table is an 18th-century Chinese bamboo altar table; underfoot, a circa 1900 Persian Tabriz rug from Doris Leslie Blau.
An area outside the wine cellar and tasting room serves as a gallery of posters from plays produced by the homeowner. The caned bench from the owner’s collection provides extra seating and mimics the wicker storage basket on the floor. The deep vermilion paint color was custom-created for the space.

The client and his team justified the expense because architectural detail made the house “look like it’s always been there,” says Nunnerley, who also had new fumed-oak floors laid throughout. “No polyurethane or varnish,” she adds. “It’s a bit rough and raw, which gives it this wonderful aged look.” Pier adds, “All the moldings and trim bring a consistency to the house that it originally lacked.” Nunnerley’s take on English cottage style is “cleaner and clearer, but with the same sense of history and ease,” she says. So she appointed interiors with an uncluttered mix of antiques and comfy upholstered custom seating—a roomy flannel sofa in the living room next to a

spectacular circa 1700 Adam Revival marble fireplace; a 19th-century Chinese altar table in the dining room with a Sheraton-style radial table surrounded by custom upholstered chairs; and contemporary English club sofas with turned legs facing each other across an airy family room. There are also antique porcelains and diverse artworks by Marc Chagall, William Glackens and Norman Rockwell, among others. And books. “I think he practically lives in the library surrounded by all his books,” says Nunnerley, only half in jest. “I can understand why. For a man who loves ideas, it’s the ultimate luxury.” One could even say a kingly one. L

Lighting the room, which includes a custom headboard by Nunnerley, is a Swedish alabaster fixture from the early 1900s and a Colonial-style wall sconce from Eileen Lane Antiques. COLOR TRAITS When Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks of Atelier Interior Design were challenged with infusing color and glamour into a traditional home, they accepted with gusto. The homeowner attributed her love of color to a childhood spent in India and was looking for a way to liven up her study.
