BERNHARDT
NEOLITH
Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.
Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

EDITOR’S LETTER
Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

memo SHARON SUMMER PUBLISHER
When I was a kid, Brooklyn was the borough we visited to see my grandfather, who lived in a small apartment building in Williamsburg. Edgy and chic didn’t exactly come to mind as we walked up that dreary staircase; but today, Brooklyn is a destination for the young, hip and creative, and I’m now bemoaning the fact that I didn’t buy my grandfather’s apartment. In this issue, we recognize this important hub for design in our advertorial section, Design Brooklyn, where design professionals share their insights and experiences about what makes this borough special. If you haven’t spent time there, we encourage you to do so—you’ll find that the hype is well-deserved. This issue also features photos from our 4th Annual Gold List party. Over 600 guests attended Roche Bobois’ Madison Avenue showroom, and the energy and excitement about the brand was palpable! Plus, we hosted the Scholarship Awards for The Decorators Club, enjoyed a digital talk at Country Carpet in Syosset, and chatted with Thomas O’Brien at Lillian August’s Norwalk location. Enjoy the issue!

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ
JOANNA MCCLURE
Photographer / New York
YELENA MOROZ ALPERT
Writer / Washington, D.C.
Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.
ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.
KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.
MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.
Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

Designed by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Aegean collection, available in aluminum and teak, is a study in uncluttered minimalism.
ELEMENTS OF STYLE
WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ
With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.
RADAR / COLLABORATION
HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS
Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.
ANN MARIE VERING
A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.
LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER
Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.
Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.
Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES
Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.
Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment
that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.
RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.
On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND
FORM + VISION
ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.
To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m
interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

Ostensibly, technology makes our lives much easier. But, when it comes to fashion, can a machine produce the same level of beauty as something that is made by hand? “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” on show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art until August 14, explores this conundrum via a series of case studies that contrast haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles, and the hand versus machine techniques that brought them to life. More than 120 ensembles, from an 1880s Worth gown to a 2015 Chanel suit, help chart the evolution of fashion as craft. metmuseum.org
From her studio in New Haven, Connecticut, artist Tracie Cheng channels her love for architecture and design into beautifully abstract paintings and drawings that combine dimensional play with ethereal watercolors. traciecheng.com Where to shop in New Haven: The English Building Markets is a staple consignment/ vintage shop and a delight to meander through—you never know what treasures you’re going to find. Its storefront displays are also always magical and inspiring. I can’t get enough of... Dexterity Press, a local letterpress print shop run by Jeff Mueller. I love the look and feel of letterpress; the tactility really enhances the design. Jeff’s designs are whimsical and complex, and the way he layers in his designs deeply resonates with me. 120 / LUXESOURCE.COM
Be sure not to miss: Lyric Hall is the vision of John Cavaliere, an expert gilder and saver of antiques; he lovingly restored the old, dilapidated vaudeville theater into an enchanting setting for shows and events. The space is full of interesting details, often antiques and pieces of local theaters past. To be there is to be a part of history. Design splurge: I’m into vintage treasure hunts and love finding good deals on beautiful and unique items. My most common “splurge” is the time I spend searching for such things!
BLUEPRINT THE SHEPHARD
Few addresses in New York are more covetable than the brownstone-lined streets of the Greenwich Village Historic District. The Shephard, which will occupy a historic Romanesque Revival building and former warehouse on West 10th Street, is set to become another neighborhood jewel with the release of three extraordinary penthouses in the 12-story building—a collaboration between architect Beyer Blinder Belle and interior design firm Gachot Studios. Amenities onsite at the Naftali Group-owned building will include a gym, library, half basketball court, bouldering wall and separate sauna and steam rooms. And if that doesn’t keep residents entertained, there will also be a Pilates studio, golf simulator/screening room and an arcade room. 275w10.com

DATE BOOK RICH BRILLIANT WILLING
Though it might sound more like an apt description for a desirable romantic suitor, Rich Brilliant Willing actually derives its name from its three founders: Theo Richardson, Charles Brill and Alexander Williams. The trio of friends met while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design and, soon after, went on to found their now-coveted lighting brand, featuring creative LED fixtures that are both completely functional and entirely statement-making. Having been nominated for the prestigious Cooper Hewitt National Design Award, as well as being named best new designer at ICFF, Rich Brilliant Willing continues to redefine the idea of modern lighting—from wall-mounted sconces to ceiling fixtures—working from their base in New York. But while their showroom is in Manhattan, their hearts lie in Brooklyn, the location of their production studio. Here, they share their must-see haunts in their fave borough. richbrilliantwilling.com

HERE, BIKOFF SHARES HER INSPIRATION FOR A MYTHICAL RAINFOREST. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY JULIE BALTER
The forest through the trees: What was the intention behind your theme? Nature is always a focal point in my designs and is what inspires me most in the world. I wanted to encapsulate that in the space and almost overwhelm the viewer with a more theatrical scene.
PHOTOS: JONATHAN GRASSI / SOCIALSHUTTERBUG.COM.
Your playfulness and passion clearly comes through, yet there’s also a strong sense of restraint. My sense of balance comes from my background in painting and art history and how artists use colors, forms and objects to achieve balance. I’m not a minimalist by any means and truly do believe that “more is more,” however, there’s an art to this “restrained maximalism.” When you have such dynamism with the walls, you need to have something equally as dynamic on the ceiling to draw the eyes up. It’s all about moving seamlessly without interruptions. There’s a surprising contrast between the artful de Gournay wallpaper and the industrial floorcovering. This connects with the playfulness of what is real and what is fake. I tried to create moments of both real and imaginative design. What drew you to the Liaigre seating? I wanted the space to be like a set design and felt that formal chairs were too “normal.” I noticed all of these tree stumps around the Liaigre showroom, and they worked perfectly with the grass rug and wallpaper. Then, I found two red chairs with this extremely luxe glossy-wood finish as a chic decorative accent. And how about the crown? Tell us more about the foliaged ceiling and flower-shaped chandelier. The live floral ceiling mimics the wallpaper’s tropical, trompe l’oeil theme but in a three-dimensional way, with the chandelier creating a little pop. It was all about repeating common themes. 126 / LUXESOURCE.COM
Designer Sasha Bikoff (above) selected Liaigre chairs and stools to accentuate the Liaigre dining table for her Dining by Design space (top). The floral ceiling and grass flooring provided by Brooklyn’s dig, a leaf chandelier from Venfield, and Scully & Scully dinnerware (right) all echo the lush pattern of the de Gournay wallpaper.

The summer solstice is upon us, a time of year so effortlessly captured by the masterful eye of photographer Slim Aarons. His iconic lens conjures the season’s most glorious outdoor pastimes—such as afternoon tea during the golden hour and toes grazing the cool grass, as pictured in the Spanish garden shown—and have incited the following fresh selections. Monaco’s storied beaches have long attracted the überchic, and for good reason: Nothing says summer like a lackadaisical lunch enjoyed seaside. Here, we channel the Côte d’Azur’s glistening waters and sandy coastlines, which call to mind accents and accessories that are as sophisticated as they are breezy.

to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM
JESSIE RANDALL
FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM
Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.
SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM
I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.
EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.
LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL
GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM
Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.
MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER
ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM
This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.
FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.
ANNA BOND
ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM
I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com
Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com
WONDER WALLS
There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 184 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

NATURAL
Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com
SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. THE DESIGN TEAM: Interior Design / Studio Frazar
THE CHALLENGE: Design a home with personality to spare on the Upper East Side for a family who craves an open-tothe-outdoors kitchen and the less-formal vibe of the West Village. THE WORK: An abandoned historic brownstone offered the perfect combination of space, location and opportunity. Architect Robert Finger crafted a new home within the historic shell that existed. “My inspiration was a turn-ofthe-century brownstone that had evolved over time,” he says. Finger converted the ground floor with a more industrial-style kitchen with exposed beams and added grand French doors that marry the space with the landscaped patio. Designer Lisa Frazar chose colors and textures that would mimic a West Village flavor. Touches include cool steel and subway tiles in the kitchen, along with open shelving from Urban Archaeology. Concrete countertops and Viking appliances suit the homeowners’ passion for cooking; the brushed-aluminum stools by Emeco allow the family to gather while meals are being prepared. THE RESULT: Nothing is too delicate or formal in this thoughtful home rich in both luxury and livability. The elements and additions are authentically in line with what the architect envisioned, with details that “would have happened at some point in the home’s evolution,” he says. 196 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE CHALLENGE: A couple who fell for a 13-acre estate property in western New Jersey, dotted with mature trees and greenswards, needed a design team to restore the early-1900s house that was dourly draped in brown siding and a green asphalt roof. THE WORK: Enter architect John James, whose job was to return the beauty back to what an estate home should be. The original building had been added onto 40 or 50 years ago, incorporating parts salvaged from a nearby estate. James unified things with a new exterior of white-painted cedar shakes and a natural cedar roof. Working with the clients’ longtime gardener, Nelson Castro, landscape architect Carolle Huber created
outdoor rooms that broke up the enormous sloping lawn; she did so using stone from a crumbling barn at the husband’s childhood family home in Pennsylvania. “It was done using old-world stonework methods,” Huber says of the walls, whose bases begin 42 inches below ground for stability. Then, Huber and Castro filled in with Hamptons- and Nantucketlike plantings of hydrangeas, grasses, roses and, for winter color and structure, boxwood. THE RESULT: The design team took its cues from cottages in the Hamptons and on Nantucket, where the family summers. To rescue it from an all-white monotony, however, “there are lots of textures in the mix of whites,” says designer Matthew Frederick.

THE CHALLENGE: Build a comfortable vacation house for a large family, with sweeping views of the surrounding beauty, that stays true to the original aesthetics of iconic Southampton homes. THE WORK: “At first, the homeowners wanted something modern,” says designer Susan Anthony, but a low-slung house wouldn’t work given the site. Adds architect Arthur Fraser: “It’s a corner property with views of a pond and the ocean from the second floor. This was critical to the location of certain rooms.” The design team drew inspiration from the style made popular in the area in the early 20th century by the prominent New York City firm McKim, Mead & White, which
designed a number of East Coast mansions. Living areas were designed to accommodate the family for casual entertaining and are situated on the ground floor, with wraparound porches that extend the space for optimum lounging. “Everything had to have a nice hand,” Anthony says of the chenilles, cottons, linens and stonewashed fabrics throughout. “Anything we put on furniture had to feel good against the skin and be durable with dogs and kids.” THE RESULT: The house is now bursting with activity. “They’re fun-loving people,” says Anthony. “Kids are running around; dogs are barking; people are cooking. It’s alive—that’s the kind of house it is.”

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com
Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

nown for the diversity of people, cultures and aesthetics it houses, Brooklyn is home to experts who continually redefine the design industry. One such expert is Miriam Fried, secondgeneration owner and executive officer of Downright, a manufacturer of comforters, pillows, featherbeds and more of the finest quality. Catering to retailers, hotels and design professionals, Downright specializes in flexibility and customization. Upon hearing Fried speak of common misconceptions pertaining to her industry and product, the knowledge of an expert proves its value. “People think they are allergic to down, when in fact, many are only allergic to down or feathers that are not properly washed and sterilized,” she explains. “At Downright, we use a unique OxyD® cleaning process, through which our downs are washed twice and rinsed four times with soaps, sanitizers and deodorizers. Our downs don’t meet the hypoallergenic standards—they exceed them by far.” It is this level of detail, dedication and expertise that sets the businesses of Brooklyn apart from the rest. Of the characteristics that make the borough a worldwide destination, Fried has a unique perspective. “Brooklyn’s culture is evolving from the candy stores, delicatessens and small momand-pop enterprises to establishments catering to the young millennial, who makes Brooklyn his or her first home and, perhaps, builds a business here,” she says. “The design community has access to the style and production experience of the longstanding businesses and the newer talent of the startups.”

HERITAGE OF THE BOROUGH Downright began as a small-scale down and feather operation on a quaint European farm. It was current executive officer Miriam Fried’s parents who brought the business, and its old-country traditions and values, to Brooklyn. Fried says this story is one you will often hear within the borough. “Brooklyn was the first stop for many Eastern European immigrants looking to start a new life,” she says. “It had attractive housing and available industrial spaces, as well as a small-town flavor enhanced by houses of worship and a social infrastructure. It quickly became home to suppliers for all aspects of manufacturing, and today, nearly all of our products are created right here in our Brooklyn plant, which affords us a certain cachet nationwide.”

With locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, principal Babu Reddy has a unique perspective on the cultural differences between the two. “We first opened in Brooklyn in 1998,” Reddy says. “It started off as a convenient location, right across the river from Manhattan, but as Brooklyn evolved, it played a role in HG Stones’ growth into a dynamic and vibrant surface marketplace.” Showcasing everything from granite and marble to onyx and soapstone in an array of collections from the best brands in the industry, HG Stones has become a well-known resource for design professionals and homeowners alike. The purveyor of surfaces, which owns and operates its own quarries and facilities, is located in Bushwick, just one of many neighborhoods within the borough. It’s our opportunity to push ourselves strategically and creatively and exceed client expectations.” And that they do. As Jacobs tells it, the expansion was a no-brainer. “The two major factors in opening our Brooklyn location were customer demands for a local presence and an understanding of the benefits such an exceptional design district could offer,” he says. “With an everevolving design community and events like BKLYN DESIGNS, the borough offers room to grow and innovate in the industry.” Asked to describe his clientele, Jacobs begins by noting that his Brooklyn patrons are wholly unique. “Our clientele is hard to put in a single category,” he says. “They range from a large corporation in downtown to a startup in Williamsburg; from high-end designers in luxury high-rises to a small family making room for their new addition in Park Slope.” Whether visiting for the first time or 1 searching for a place to settle, Brooklyn’s array of neighborhoods and destinations can make knowing where to start difficult. Jacobs’ advice is simple: explore. “Give yourself time to wander and soak it all in,” he says. “Brooklyn is a huge borough, so take the train to cover more ground, from the flea markets in Williamsburg all the way to Coney Island.”

local for more than 20 years, Theresa Seabaugh knows Brooklyn like the back of her hand—no small feat, considering the borough’s constantly changing atmosphere. “It has always had an edgy, creative, slightly gritty, but warm and friendly vibe,” says Seabaugh, the owner and principal designer of her namesake firm, Theresa Seabaugh Interiors. “It’s a completely different feeling than being in Manhattan, and setting up my firm here was an easy decision. Brooklyn is about seeking out the gems that are dotted around the borough, such as flea markets, niche design stores, furniture makers, small manufacturers and art galleries.” Seabaugh goes on to note that the simple act of walking around is influential when you’re in Brooklyn, as the architecture changes each time you turn a corner. The amalgam of styles within this unique slice of New York is the inspiration of local luminaries like Seabaugh, who identifies customization and the mixture of old and new as themes within her portfolio. “I love so many aspects of what I do: getting to know my clients so well I can anticipate their needs and desires; collaborating with artisans to craft a perfect custom piece; and mixing my clients’ beloved family heirlooms with contemporary items to create a personalized space,” Seabaugh says. “Brooklyn has a mixture of cultures and a strong community focus, and I want to absorb that vitality.”

SEASIDE STORY ONE YOUNG FAMILY’S MIDCENTURY BUNGALOW STARTS A NEW CHAPTER WITH A SECOND-LEVEL ADDITION, VIVID INTERIORS AND NEVER-ENDING VIEWS.
WRITTEN BY LIZ ARNOLD / PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRIA GIOVAN / STYLING BY SEAN MELLYN
I
n the course of 10 years, interior designer Scott Sanders has worked on several projects for a young Manhattan couple with three daughters. So naturally, they approached him when they decided to renovate their 1 1/2-story shingled beach house in Quogue. “He listens, internalizes and has a magical ability to transform a space,” says the husband about why they chose to work with the interior designer again. Sanders easily understood what the couple wanted for their 1940s bungalow: a place to relax, casually entertain and celebrate the ocean. “My clients like color, and I like color,” he says. “This was an opportunity to have fun.” However, the real fun would have to wait four years—when architectural changes could be approved by the Village of Quogue. To start, the clients tapped architect Michael Smith for the renovation, and he faced some immediate challenges—one of them being that the cottage was unusually close to the ocean and the dunes. “You’re not allowed to do that today,” says Smith, who renovated the property with builder George E. Vickers Jr. There also wasn’t much flexibility with the footprint, so they went upward instead, raising the main level for both compliance and to capture the views, thus creating a 2 1/2-story home.

“In a lot of those houses, you don’t get a panoramic view from the first floor. So, we added a floor on top of that,” Smith says. “It’s almost a new house at this point.” In the new structure, the main floor consists of the open living-and-dining area, the kitchen and two guest suites. Upstairs is the master bedroom, which faces the ocean, and the girls’ rooms and their sitting room. To take advantage of the waterfront location, porches, terraces and paths that lead from the home to the beach were added, and on the bay side is a new pool and pool house. Despite the new elements, though, there was a focus on “maintaining the beach cottage theme,” Vickers says. “The interior wall and ceiling finishes consist of various styles of wood paneling and wainscoting, all tastefully done.”
Celebrating the abundance of light now on the first level, glass doors panel the rear of the house and frame the ocean, which is also visible from the living-and-dining area. Taking a cue from the water, Sanders had his eye on a vibrant blue when he spotted a gorgeous rug in a kaleidoscope of bright blue, navy, marigold, four shades of green and three shades of yellow. “I love yellow and most people don’t use it, but it’s such a happy color, and they’re a happy family,” says Sanders. Building off that palette is a pair of wingbacks covered in Regimental Blue linen and a wood-framed armchair boasts cushions covered in yellow; another wood-frame chair plays upon the color scheme with a bright yellow-and-blue stripe. Across the spacious room, the dining area’s turquoise chairs and a painting by Clint Jukkala unify the entire space with their bold hues.
Outdoor living continues in an upholstered seating suite with pieces from Sutherland’s Peninsula collection. The pair of lounge chairs is covered in Sketch fabric in Cobalt from Hines & Company, and the sofa features a nautical navy stripe from Clarence House. The Parsons cocktail table is by Reed Bros., and the rug—a perfect complement—is the clients’ own.

Architect Michael Smith designed a railed ipe walkway that leads from the house to the beach. On the sundeck, an outdoor umbrella from Frontgate provides a little shade and references the ocean in its monochromatic hue, as do the blue glass hurricanes from Nellie’s of Amagansett.
The pool house is a new structure, designed in the style of the house. Landscape architect John Imbiano created a wooden boardwalk he says has a “Zen-like bend to it that cuts through the low-maintenance garden and beach grass. The white picket fence added an additional design element between the dune garden and the pool.

Above: Color was key in the girls’ sitting room upstairs, as seen in the wild Vermilion Rugs carpet and shades made with a wabi-sabi Navajo print by Scion. Violet vinyl hemp wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries and A. Rudin swivel chairs covered in hot pink Brunschwig & Fils fabric set a feminine tone, while the Crate & Barrel sideboard, Avery Boardman sofa and A. Rudin sea-grass coffee table are grounding neutrals. Left: A window seat tucked into a nook on the upstairs landing offers a cozy spot for lounging. A cushion covered in a Designers Guild print from Osborne & Little enlivens the space with color, as does the artwork by Ludwig Sander. Phillip Jeffries wallcovering wraps the space in warmth, while a hanging lantern by The Urban Electric Co. punctuates with its jewel-like geometry.
Oceanic themes continue upstairs in the master bedroom, where a beach-glass-hued wallcovering and a sand-colored rug both reference elements of the landscape. Furnishings in weathered wood follow suit in classic elegant lines, such as the bobbin bed, a wooden barrel chair and the clients’ own bench, whose rope-like pattern evokes sailing. Some of the most beautiful views, however, can be found in the kitchen, which was designed by Felton Pervier. “The windows facing the bay made for great light and a spacious feel,” says Pervier. They also overlook the pool and a dune garden created by landscape architect John Imbiano, who planted native perennials such as Montauk daisies, black-eyed Susans and bayberry shrubs. So as not to compete with the scenery, the kitchen is more subdued.
The walls, floors and wood are all light, and the countertops are a gentle blue macauba. For a pop of color, the living room armchair’s stripe repeats here on the bar chairs. The cabinetry—featuring both open and closed shelving—was finished with polished-nickel hardware, giving the space “almost a nautical feel,” says Pervier. It may have taken a few years, but the design team’s diligence has paid off, and it’s exactly what the clients were looking for in an escape from the city. “It’s where time slows down for our family,” says the husband. “And we love the color. When the vibrancy is taken together with the wallcoverings, fabrics and special lighting elements, it becomes a residence where we feel like we can be barefoot and just enjoy our own family resort.”
Opposite: Oceanic tones in the master bathroom—beach glass and soft whites that bring to mind cresting waves—reflect those of the bedroom, which feels like part of the space when the doors are swung open. The white-lacquered resin chandelier inspired by coral is from Arteriors, and the wall-mounted double sconces and white-washed stool are both from Waterworks, as are the chrome faucets. Below: In the master bedroom, nightstands by David Iatesta flank the bed, which is dressed in custom white linens with turquoise and tan details by Cristina Azario. The turquoise stripe on the barrel chair is from Osborne & Little, and the breezy woven draperies are made of Rumba fabric from Romo, trimmed in seafoam slub tape from Lee Jofa.

J
effrey Gibson decided to become an artist when he was just 4 years old. “Somebody asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and it was my first choice,” he says. Gibson, whose studio resides in an old schoolhouse in Claverack, eventually went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and London’s Royal College of Art, and has since found success with major commissions and exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. “I was always the kid who could draw, and I was raised in a family where being an artist was one of the best things you could be,” he says. The Colorado Springs-born Gibson finds inspiration in his Native American roots— his mother is Cherokee and his father is Choctaw—as well as a multitude of other cultural influences. “I like things that have a history, and although I don’t always know how they will all surface in the work, I like having it around me,” says Gibson, who, as the son of a military man, grew up living in Germany, Korea, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina. Add to that his experiences in London and Chicago, and the fact that his husband is Norwegian, and it becomes clear that Gibson, and his work, is the epitome of multicultural. Some of Gibson’s most notable achievements can be seen in the approximately 100 pieces he has created using found objects. He is currently using—among other things—segregation signs from the 1920s and ’30s, Everlast punching bags and a 7-foot-tall antique cigar-store Indian. The unexpected materials he incorporates into his pieces include nylon fringe, rawhide and Native American old pawn jewelry. And in a completely different turn, Gibson has been commissioned to design stained glass windows for Houghton Chapel at Wellesley College in Massachusetts and a figure for the Newark Museum. Now, at 44, the humble artist, who attributes his dedicated staff and team of aspiring artists for his success, encourages conversation. “My work is not meant to be accusatory,” explains Gibson. “It’s meant to invigorate and call people to pay attention, engage and include.”
Artist Jeffrey Gibson (left) found inspiration in his Native American heritage for his performance cloak, entitled Like A Hammer. His ceramics series The Taste, The Sight, The Smell (below) speaks to the senses, while found objects communicate messages on his punching bags and panels (opposite and bottom). A few of his in-progress paintings are also shown both at left and below.

I
have dressed everyone from Oprah to Eva Longoria, and they all have different body types,” says former Halston creative director and designer Bradley Bayou. “Understanding how to bring out the best in them is exactly the same approach I take when designing an apartment.” In the case of the West Village pied-à-terre that Bayou shares with his paramour of two decades, Mark Itkin, a partner with William Morris Endeavor, he looked to the cityscape for inspiration for everything from the open layout to the color palette of grays, blues and blacks. “Keeping the colors on the inside the same as on the outside focuses attention on the million-dollar views,” Bayou explains. The ninth-floor unit’s floor-to-ceiling windows frame postcard-worthy vistas of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in the living room, and One World Trade Center in the master bathroom. A private elevator provides direct access to the full-floor flat, which Bayou spent months renovating from top to bottom. “The space is fantastic, but the finishes were not up to par,” he says, “so I ripped them all out.” In doing so, Bayou was also able to modify the layout, removing walls to combine small closed-off rooms into larger ones. What was once a dark enclosed kitchen, for example, is now a light-filled space that is open to the living and dining areas. “It went from a dark apartment with small rooms to a luxurious home,” explains general contractor Robert Tobin. LUXESOURCE.COM / 271
Designer and homeowner Bradley Bayou designed the dining area’s oil-rubbed-bronzeand-brass chandelier with porcelain shades in collaboration with Lindsey Adelman. The cowhide-covered panels add organic texture while concealing storage cubes.

Negotiating the relatively small elevator shaft was one of the most challenging parts of the project for Tobin and his crew, forcing him and his team to carry heavy steel beams up nine flights of stairs and bring up the outdoor Jacuzzi shell in two pieces. “It was difficult to get everything in the house,” Tobin says. “Everything had to be cut, fabricated and reassembled by hand.” Once on-site, they completely rebuilt the apartment to Bayou’s specifications. One such example is in the living area, where Bayou had a marble fireplace niche recessed between a pair of matching unfilled-travertine floor-toceiling wall panels—a decision made to create a more open feel. “The apartment is not that wide, so recessing things makes it feel bigger,” he explains. “I wanted to make a statement.” The smoothness of the marble juxtaposes with the honed limestone and the fired-black granite flooring, which has a rough surface. “The different textures work together to create a sense of depth,” Bayou adds. “The Venetian plaster gives a subtle shine.”
A mix of texture can be found throughout the entire apartment, such as in the dining room, where a grid of cowhide-covered wall panels features cleverly concealed storage niches with space for a television and a coat closet. Likewise, the walls in the den are covered with a silk iridescent fabric that resembles scrunched silk. “It’s almost like Fortuny pleating,” Bayou notes. “I try to use rich, classic materials in different ways.” That sense of creativity informed everything from the layout to custom furnishings such as a sculptural-bronzebrass-and-porcelain chandelier that Bayou designed in collaboration with Lindsey Adelman. Its light reflects off the porcelain shades, softly illuminating a vintage French table with a steel top and a set of bespoke silk-covered dining chairs inspired by both midcentury and Asian lines. For Bayou, comfort was just as important as style. “Nothing that Bradley designs is ever uncomfortable,” Itkin says. “You just sink into the furniture.” In the living room, for example, Bayou combined a plush sectional

Silk draperies softly filter the light from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom, where a Tibetan rug from J.H. and a pair of modern leather chairs with an African sculpture to create a look that Bayou has dubbed “world modernism.” “It’s about combining pieces from all over the world and at all different times,” Bayou explains. “The lines are similar, and you connect them together with color. You mix that with contemporary art, and it just works.” Bayou took the same approach in the master bedroom, for which he designed a custom mahogany headboard, once again employing cowhide for its upholstery. Luminescent silk-and-wool draperies act as a bridge between the subtle sheen of the cowhide and the textural hemp wallcovering. “The draperies are the same color as the walls,” Bayou says. “I didn’t want to break things up with a different color, because it prevents your eye from moving to the window, which is where the view is.” In fact, much of the unit was designed around the view. Even the glass-enclosed shower in the master suite looks right down onto the West Village. “You can actually look out onto the city while you take a shower,” Itkin says. The crowning jewel of the many splendid views is outside on the 500-square-foot balcony, where the black-granite Jacuzzi has been positioned on an angle slightly askew of its wooden base in order to face the Empire State Building. Weathered-teak living and dining sets provide plenty of space for the couple and their guests to relax over cocktails. “You’re in the middle of the action, but at the same time, it’s very private,” Bayou says. “I pinch myself when I’m here.”

SECOND LIFE NEW YORK-BASED MAKER MATS CHRISTテ右N REIGNITES HIS CHILDHOOD PASSION FOR THE HANDCRAFTED. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBYN TWOMEY
M
etal- and woodworker Mats Christéen, founder of Foundrywood, didn’t plan to be a craftsman. In fact, his dream was to be a hockey player. Although the Stockholm native loved working with his hands (“My earliest memories involve swinging a hammer next to my dad,” he says), it wasn’t his focus—especially after he nabbed a sports contract. “I was on the ice for 20 hours a week and then in the gym for another 20,” he says. “Once I commit to something, it’s pedal to the metal.” Christéen played professionally on and off for nine years, all the while interspersing his athletic pursuits with modeling. But he retired from both of those by the time he was 26, and found himself pursuing the career that he’d been unofficially training for since he was a child. The artisan’s turn towards furniture was organic. After retiring from hockey and moving to New York, he began repurposing tables in his backyard. Some neighbors saw his work and asked for a piece. Then, other friends saw it. “All of a sudden, I had orders for 20 tables!” he says, with a laugh. Christéen’s work then evolved into making furniture from scratch. “I still love to use reclaimed wood, though” he says. “It has a history already.” Tables are just one part of Christéen’s repertoire. Bookcases, credenzas and benches are also among his offerings, as well as custom-order pieces. With the clean lines and modern shapes of his furniture, Christéen’s Scandinavian heritage is implicit, though the influences of his new home are easy to spot through his work’s industrial edge and continued use of reclaimed wood. Through it all, Christéen’s “pedal-to-the metal” attitude remains: He releases several new collections every year. “I really love what I do,” he says. “It’s very different from hockey, but it’s a different time in my life. When you’re an athlete, everything is physical. By the time you go to bed, your mind is empty. Now, I don’t have time to work out, so it’s all in my mind now. I come home at night, and I can’t stop thinking. I always wake up with new ideas.”

DOUBLE TAKE A SHINGLED COTTAGE IN SOUTHAMPTON’S HISTORIC DISTRICT REVEALS AN EXCITING NEW VIBE BEYOND ITS PRIM FAÇADE. WRITTEN BY JENNIFER SERGENT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRIA GIOVAN

Architect Stuart Disston and his clients decided the home’s façade should fit comfortably within the architectural vernacular of the neighborhood. The columned veranda, porte cochere, red cedar roof and stone chimneys reveal nothing of the streamlined modernism inside.
S
hari and Len Potter are modernists at heart. So they weren’t immediately drawn to the idea of Southampton’s historic district as a place to build their dream vacation house. The story of how they arrived there begins with a bit of serendipity and ends with a design that mingles with the neighborhood’s century-old cottages yet opens to reveal a truly modern soul. The Potters spent years decamping to North Carolina’s Outer Banks each summer while their children were growing up, but because several of their best friends and Shari’s sister and her family had weekend homes in the Hamptons, they finally took a look—and quickly found an abandoned 1970s-era house that was ripe for a teardown. Their realtor referred them to architect Stuart Disston, who instantly understood his clients’ desire for a contemporary aesthetic to shine through Southampton’s Shingle-style vernacular. “We decided we would keep the exterior of the house reflective of the neighborhood,” says Disston. “But the inside is all straight-edge molding and high-lacquered finishes—clean and more on the minimal side.” This balance can be seen as soon as one enters the home. The porte cochere entry under diamond-pane windows looks to the past while the front door opens to the 21st century with abstract-patterned wallpaper on one side and an oversize photographic work by artist Matthew Brandt on the other. The foyer continues onward, past a two-story wall of steel-paned windows and toward public spaces enclosed with the same dark metal and glass. “The stair hall is an event on the way through the house,” Disston says, pointing out that this experience is exemplified by how the glass wall floods light through the home’s front and back sections. Disston put an updated spin on classic architectural elements throughout the house. Instead of dark hardwood floors, there is cerused white oak. Instead of marble kitchen counters, he used milk glass, while the cabinetry is lacquered and trimmed in stainless steel. “The blend of traditional and modern details that Stuart created can be found all throughout the house. This combination of wood, steel and stone—it happens in every room,” says builder Stephen Parker, whose team reiterated the balance by hand-scraping all the floors, ceiling beams and stair rails to achieve their unique finish—a rough contrast to the high-gloss moldings. LUXESOURCE.COM / 285
A matte, hand-painted wallcovering on Japanese paper by Porter Teleo gives definition to a niche in the lacquered foyer. The custom bench, Circle in Square mirror and The Urban Electric Co. sconces were purchased through designer Chris Desmone’s studio, HB Home NYC.
Designer Chris Desmone took the same approach with the interior design. On one hand, it had to feel like a traditional beach house—comfortable above all, with nothing too precious. “But it’s the yin and the yang,” he says. “You have the combination of the low-key and the luxurious.” The upholstered pieces—many of them from HB Home NYC, where he has worked with designers and owners Patricia Healing and Daniel Barsanti for 16 years—are durable and plush, while the bling comes through accent pieces, art and lighting. “What we found ourselves doing was designing most of the lighting ourselves,” he says of the sinuous sculptural pendants that hang in so many rooms and that he had fabricated by artisans from New York to Charleston. The library, which the Potters describe as a place of escape from
the open-plan main level, is anchored with a glass table on a golden ribbon-like stand, surrounded by shelves of all-white objects that Desmone and Shari collected during the three years the house was being designed and built. A soothing palette of pale sea and sky colors throughout the house leans back toward the low-key. “We went through the subtleties of all the colors, nothing too saturated,” Desmone says. Adds Shari: “There’s a serenity to it—from color to fabrics and décor, our goal was to make the house inviting and relaxing.” The real sea and sky, meanwhile, played a significant role in a design that is always focused outward. “The connection to the outside was critical,” Len says. “We love the idea of having the whole outside flow to the inside.”
The living-dining area stretches the width of the house and is dominated by a painting of epoxy resin and pigments on wood commissioned from Markus Linnenbrink. The custom sectional is by HB Home NYC, and Desmone designed the coffee table; the flat-weave rug is by J.D. Staron.

A sculptural brass-base table from HB Home NYC sets an artistic tone in the library, whose shelves contain the owners’ collection of vintage white vases and pots. The basket-weave sheers on the windows allow plenty of sunlight but maintain privacy from the front drive.
Though not directly on the water, the 2-acre property was designed with a summer getaway in mind, with an outdoor kitchen and two dining and lounge areas surrounding the large pool, a sunken tennis court and playing fields for the owners’ three high school- and college-age children. “The indoor rooms relate to the outdoor rooms,” landscape architect Timothy Rumph says. “So, we used materials that are clean and concise.” This included such elements as lena limestone surrounding the pool and a mixture of trees and perennial plantings that would provide beauty any time of year. “We made sure the planting design provides interest for the garden whenever they are there,” he adds. In a nod to the
surrounding historic district, Disston designed a traditional mortise-and-tenon-framed pool house out back. “It just makes a neat open-air structure, because you have all that wonderful woodwork,” he says. With their vacation house now so close—less than a two-hour drive from their home—the Potters use the house on weekends and holidays all year long, and the nine bedrooms, movie theater, upstairs living room, and deck for the kids means it’s equipped for friends and family well into the future. “I wanted to build a place where our kids, no matter where they live, will want to visit and bring their kids,” Shari says. Adds Len: “It’s everything we thought it would be.”
In the library, HB Home NYC’s Spa chaise is upholstered in Pindler’s Raines Midnight; a similar hue is reflected on the shelving walls with Benjamin Moore’s Old Navy. The walls are covered in a Phillip Jeffries metallic basket-weave grass cloth, also from HB Home NYC; the Tibetan rug is by J.D. Staron.

For the master bedroom, Desmone framed paint-can labels that Shari’s father designed for a 1960s advertising campaign. JAMES MERRELL ARCHITECTS James Merrell's journey to realizing his passion informs his design today. Though he always knew he had a love for architecture, Merrell’s fascination with the radicalism of the 1970s led him to earn a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies before pursuing his current passion, which would ultimately culminate in the founding of his firm, James Merrell Architects. “I can trace the qualities that distinguish our designs to the critical and experimental sensibilities of that time,” Merrell says. “I feel I am a better architect as a result. All architects are drawn to history. They don't teach a theory of history in our schools, so architects struggle with this question.” Viewing architecture as conversational and collaborative, Merrell and his team strive to create the spaces desired by their clients while breaking the boundaries of traditional practices. “We are currently engaged in a fun social experiment: creating a collaborative design culture,” Merrell says. “In this we are not only focused on the design of houses, but on the design of the culture that produces them as well.” Executing a vision while maintaining details and ensuring the achievement of requested elements, Merrell’s fervor is proven in his enjoyment of not only the outcome, but also the process. “Today, every style is ‘historical,’ even modern ones, so we do not start out with a style,” he says. “Our houses generally start as very abstract sketches. Out of this the specifics of space and materials slowly take shape. When it’s done, those first sketches always amaze me. From that perspective I can see the whole journey, from abstract to concrete, and there is nothing like it.”

Describe the philosophy behind your firm. Architects in the 20th century famously built statement houses. But we view architecture as a conversational process, because conversations are inclusive and collaborative, and when managed effectively, they produce exceptional designs. How would you describe your clientele? Our clients are comfortable with creative exploration and view architecture as an art rather than a commodity. They want to express who they are now, not who they might aspire to become. What would be your dream creative project? On the side we are playing with a theoretical project: code as a metaphor in design. I'm not sure where it will take us, but it would be fun to include a patron on this adventure.

SHOPE RENO WHARTON ASSOCIATES
While the inspired architectural creations at Shope Reno Wharton Associates tend to be geographically diverse, there remains a consistent foundation upon which each high-end waterfront residence, country estate, mountain home or island paradise is built. Shope Reno Wharton creates homes with character; modern in thought and convenience, with a traditional sensibility. “Our clients are interested in creating legacy homes that foster lasting memories, comfort and refuge. We believe our homes should settle seamlessly into the landscape, reflecting a sense of place as well as permanence. Ours is an American architecture with a melting-pot approach that is stronger as a result of many perspectives and influences,” says Arthur Hanlon, one of five partners at Shope Reno Wharton, along with Jerry Hupy, Michael McClung, Don Aitken and John Gassett. The Connecticut-based firm, founded in 1981, has grown from a small residential practice to an established design brand sought by discerning clients from Maine to Utah and beyond. In addition to one-of-a-kind homes, the firm’s portfolio includes equestrian centers, golf clubhouses, schools and museums. “We apply consistent beliefs about architecture that are common to every design opportunity,” Hupy says. “In our view, attention to the fundamentals comes before stylistic concerns, which provides an identifiable character that underlies the whole composition.”

What do you strive to create when you're working on a project? What's most important to you? We strive to create beautifully designed, well-built homes that reflect the collaboration between client and architect while incorporating the site and environment. What are the key influences in your work today? One of our favorite architects is Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose imaginative ideas continue to inspire us. We have great respect for all architects who execute their ideas flawlessly, regardless of style. What do you regard as the greatest success in your career to date? We value the ability to produce great architecture in an increasingly regulated world. Our homes create places of refuge and comfort, apart from the bustle of everyday life.

STONE + TILE
What are the key influences in your work today? Travel and culture. I handpick stones from quarries in various parts of the world, such as Italy, while exploring their culture and history.
Daniel Gupta President 575 Broadhollow Road Farmingdale, New York 631.293.8453 info@nashgranite.com nashgranite.com
NASH GRANITE & MARBLE When Daniel Gupta sought the installation of granite and marble as part of his own home’s renovation, he experienced an industry in which he saw the need for change. Thus, Nash Granite & Marble was founded. “I embarked on a journey to find the perfect surfaces for my home, only to be met with a dirt lot, hours of waiting, unspecified amounts charged and an ultimately inferior product,” Gupta says. “I decided to combine my years of knowledge in the fashion industry, passion for design and fascination with natural stone to completely renovate a mediocre process.” In speaking of what comes next, Gupta points to Revo Stone, a light, flexible, ultrathin sheet of natural stone that is the first capable of being processed by a woodworker’s normal tools. Calling the material revolutionary, he explains that its ability to be used for everything from walls, partitions and ceilings to columns, furniture and showers will change the face of natural stone. As its possession of this innovative new product conveys, Nash Granite & Marble has become known for its president’s dedication to sourcing and the unique product variety it yields. “We do not always carry the same stones at our showroom, which makes it a full-time job filling each open slot with a prime selection of handpicked stone,” Gupta says. “You will find patterns and colors here that you will not find in other places. The suppliers and vendors we work with in Italy and other locations are the pioneers of this industry. We work with the best to provide the best.” Cultivating a family friendly atmosphere and a staff proud of its work, the company strives to provide the most exquisite surfaces available on the market.

What is inspiring you now? The continual evolution of the industry. New products, projects and ideas create a constantly developing menagerie of stone, marble, tile and many more surfaces to explore. How do you define luxury? Luxury is such a passionate word. It holds different meanings for each individual. To me, luxury is defined by attention to detail and meticulous, exclusive workmanship coupled with sophisticated good taste.

INSPIRATION FOUND
SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
