EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

BEHIND the SCENES What was the inspiration for the interiors at 611 West 56th Street? MG: Light as a material in and of itself and the way it informs our personal state. By harnessing this blend of time, space and emotion, we believed we could create different atmospheres with individual emotional qualities.
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza is bringing his craft to the U.S. with 611 West 56th Street. At more than 450 feet tall, the tower is outfitted with a Perla Bianca limestone façade and minimalist interiors carefully crafted by architecture and interior design firm Gabellini Sheppard Associates. Partners Kimberly Sheppard and Michael Gabellini gave Luxe an inside look at the project. 611w56st.com 082 / luxesource.com
LX_NY45_Scene.indd 82
How did you work with the architect to design the interiors? KS: Creating designs alongside Siza is a rare honor and an absolute pleasure. You find out very quickly how recognizable his aesthetic is and how confidently he carries it out in his designs. That confidence encouraged us to simplify and emphasize space and light in ways that are completely fresh and new. MG: We followed his lead in imagining the building as though it were carved from a single block of stone to reveal something that was graphic and pure. Likewise, the interiors have a similar sense of editing, revealing architecture that is minimal but elemental in how it interacts with materials and finishes.
How do you want residents to feel? MG: In the lobby, we wanted to blend grandeur and intimacy into one and, by doing so, create a sense of anticipation for the building’s occupants so that every instance of arrival and exit feels fresh. This concept extends out to every element of our design, eliciting familiarity while stimulating new experiences.

TOAST of the TOWN THE FLEUR ROOM
ELIZABETH SUTTON X JANOVIC
There’s something special about seeing your art come to life, and award-winning designer and artist Elizabeth Sutton is about to do just that on a citywide scale. In collaboration with leading paint provider Janovic, Sutton has created five distinct color palettes of Benjamin Moore paints. Each one will live large in Janovic NYC stores, murals in Yorkville and Hell’s Kitchen, and vinyls in Chelsea and Long Island City. Inspired by Sutton’s experiences, the palettes have whimsical names like “Head in the Clouds” and “New York Goes to the Eden Rock, St. Barth’s,” a nod to Sutton’s partnership with the luxury hotel. “All my designs are inspired by my love of color,” Sutton says. “I wanted to give my eye to Janovic customers, encouraging them to bring a splash of color to the special spaces in their homes, as I do in my own.” janovic.com
SAVE the DATE “VIDA AMERICANA”
Often referred to as Los Tres Grandes, or “The Big Three,” José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera were Mexico’s leading muralists in the first half of the 20th century. “Vida Americana,” a new exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art, explores the ways that these artists transformed artmaking in the U.S. during a time of cross-cultural exchange often referred to as the “Mexican Vogue.” Showcased in the Whitney’s largest gallery, “Vida Americana” brings together 200 works by 60 American and Mexican artists. The collection is on view from February 17 to May 17. whitney.org

COLLABORATION
A newcomer to the neighborhood, the Moxy Chelsea not only boasts 349 guest rooms but also amenities designed by Rockwell Group. In addition to the street-level Italian eatery Feroce Ristorante and the lobby lounge on the second floor, the architectural firm designed The Fleur Room rooftop bar. After entering from street level, guests are transported to an elegant lounge on the 35th floor with both indoor and outdoor accommodations. Indirect lighting adds to the intimacy of the atmosphere and allows the 360-degree views of the city to shine. Throughout, edgy materials such as rough concrete pair with glamorous touches and furnishings. You’ll see florals, such as those in custom upholstery from Nuans Design, arrangements by Putnam & Putnam and rugs by Moooi Carpets, all of which recall the Flower District surrounding the hotel. Further drawing on the garden feel is a hallway linking the bar and lounge that’s lined with replicas of classical sculptures in a nod to the “live” corridor of torchieres in the 1946 French film Beauty and the Beast by filmmaker Jean Cocteau. moxy-hotels.marriott.com

▲ 77 GREENWICH “For the interior design of 77 Greenwich, we crafted a visual journey that takes the homeowner from the bustling streets of Lower Manhattan to the tranquil, light-filled homes above, culminating in a spectacular shared garden at the top. The airiness of the residences and amenity spaces we created allowed us to emphasize the spectacular panoramic views shared by everyone in the building.” –Stephen Brockman, partner, Deborah Berke Partners

DATE BOOK JOHN AND CHRISTINE GACHOT
Recently topped out, Madison House is a new face in the NoMad landscape. The luxury residential building will open in fall 2020, but it’s already making an impact in the neighborhood as its tallest residence, which was designed by Handel Architects. Gachot Studios, led by founders John and Christine Gachot, designed the interiors, and while the Gachots don’t live in NoMad, they’ve begun spending much of their time in the area. “NoMad is such a good launch point for exploring the city,” Christine says. With Madison House, she adds, “We sought to create a place of serenity and respite from the bustling city below while still celebrating the urban vitality that is so visible through these incredible expanses of window. The interiors focus on quality, luxurious materials rendered in simple, sturdy forms.” Here, the couple walks us through a day in the life in NoMad. gachotstudios.com 9:30 a.m. CG: After an early morning getting our boys off to school and doing yoga, I head to The Edition near Madison Square Park. There, I have breakfast at the restaurant The Clocktower with a client. 11 a.m. CG: I arrive at ALT for Living showroom to check out new throws that owner Analisse Taft sent me images of the night before. I spend the hour obsessing over her latest luxury fabrics, pillows and carpets. 11:45 a.m. CG: Next stop is the 200 Lex Design Center. This is an unbelievable resource for designers. It’s a bit of a secret,
but it’s open to the general public. Furniture, fabrics, wallcoverings, kitchens, vintage, contemporary— it’s all under one roof. There I can visit friends and shop for clients. I make a pit stop at the Rizzoli Bookstore before lunch with John. Rizzoli publishes beautiful books on art, design and much more. It’s a reliable resource for inspiration. 1 p.m. JG: I’m meeting Christine for lunch in a bit, so I stop by Old Print Shop first to research fauna and flora vintage prints for custom wallcoverings I’m developing. Christine calls to say that she’s running late, which is perfect because I got a little lost looking at prints and still have time to stop by

We get inspired by the area and make a reservation at Eleven Madison Park for the next month. 5:30 p.m. CG: To finish the day, I have a quick catch-up drink with a client at the Elephant Bar in the NoMad Hotel. MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com
All GROWN UP
Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. Game on. artemest.com

BROOKS & FALOTICO Known for its strong client relationships and transitional design approach, Brooks & Falotico has grown through word of mouth. While their influences are many—the traditional architecture of New England; midcentury modern masterpieces; the endless creativity of New York City— principals Louise Brooks and Vince Falotico feel their work gains context primarily from the client and location. The latter has been a touchstone of their firm’s expertise. “We enjoy the challenge of working within the constraints of difficult building sites,” Brooks says. When they are in the Hamptons or Palm Beach, waterfront residences must meet environmental, structural and zoning restrictions. In Jackson Hole or Big Sky, mountainous terrain stirs up new quandaries. “Orson Welles once said, ‘The enemy of art is the absence of limitations,’ and we feel that is very true for architecture,” Falotico shares. Employing this mindset and years of learned proficiency, the Brooks & Falotico team strives to achieve its ultimate goal, which is comparatively straightforward: “We want to design each client’s dream home.”

“ Our favorite part of this work is reaching a homeowner’s goals for aesthetics, budget and comfort.”
Ask the Expert What style is your firm most known for? The communities we work in are often mostly traditional, but more and more, our clients are looking for modern interior spaces. We love the challenge of creating homes that make sense in their surroundings, but still feel fresh and suited to today’s needs. Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Our large number of repeat clients. They have hired us to design multiple homes, and recently, we have also started working with some of their children on their own homes.

What’s next for the firm? In 2019, we opened an office in Palm Beach, and we hope to continue expanding business there in addition to other projects throughout the country—and beyond. This year, we will complete our first international home in Bermuda.

CHARLES HILTON ARCHITECTS Though its projects can be found from coast to coast, Charles Hilton Architects has discovered a niche in designing waterfront and estate residences in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and Westchester County, New York. Since its first paramount project 25 years ago—the remodeling of a 1942 home on a bucolic, 8-acre estate in Greenwich—the firm has built a reputation for producing traditionally inspired residences of the utmost quality and detail. It has won numerous design awards and been featured in a steady stream of prestigious publications, but for owner and principal Charles Hilton, the acknowledgment of thoughtful work and of his team’s dedication to giving back are the greatest successes. “We are known for architecture that stands the test of time, for the highest level of craftsmanship and for integrity in our business relationships,” he says. “This was recognized by our 2016 induction into the New England Design Hall of Fame. I am also very proud of our firm’s involvement in and contributions to the community. We do frequent pro bono projects and were named Greenwich’s Corporate Citizen of the Year in 2016. This focus of the business is important to us.” Hilton’s desire to serve people extends to his own clients as well. From personalities to hobbies to family size, he and his team carefully consider every element of a homeowner’s life before embarking on the journey of their design.

Share your influences and inspirations. Our designs are influenced and inspired by our client’s passions and dreams, as well as the setting of the property. We also have an extensive library of historical and contemporary books in our office that we pour through constantly. And, I love to travel. How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Clients can Google any question and get a multitude of answers. They can find ideas and advice from countless resources. But people often struggle to make sense of all this input and don’t know what to believe. Hire an experienced team and then trust their guidance.

IKE KLIGERMAN BARKLEY At the start of any new venture, finding the specialty or skill that sets one apart can be a game changer. For John Ike, Thomas A. Kligerman and their team at Ike Kligerman Barkley, it was proven effective almost immediately. The masters of, as they call it, “Shinglish,” saw their first home published before they had been in business for 24 months, and the eye-catching perfection of that hybrid style was the genesis of many of their subsequent creations. Inspired by British and U.S. architecture from the 1880s, Ike and Kligerman start with hand-drawn sketches and watercolors before moving, little by little, toward computer-based perspectives and three-dimensional prints. “As this process happens, the concept goes from broad, evocative brushstrokes to pinpoint accuracy,” Ike shares. Although they work in locations from coast to coast (with offices in New York City and San Francisco) and believe in taking deep dives into geography, indigenous architecture and the client’s own motivations and dreams, they do focus on a few signature elements that bring that “Shinglish” look into play. “Strong modern geometry, clear planes softened by detail and rich materials are characteristics of our compositions,” Kligerman says. “We look for ways to bridge modern and traditional in our layouts, forms and features.”

“We have worked to gently move the needle on the trajectory of the Shingle style.”
Ask the Expert What project would you love to take on? We would love to design an open, flowing modern house in a tropical location, like Hawaii, Thailand or the Caribbean. A church is another project that would interest us. What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Instagram has created a wider design community. We are astounded by the range of beautiful images we all gather and post. And, three-dimensional printing is a fantastic tool.

SHOPE RENO WHARTON While the architectural firm of Shope Reno Wharton has completed many Shingle-style estates along the Eastern Seaboard—a theme chosen for its design diversity and sculptural possibilities—its reach has grown geographically over the years, opening the doors to all aesthetics. “But we have one rule,” principal Jerry Hupy says. “Whatever style it is, do it well!” And that they do. Drawing from the tenets of traditional and classical design, Hupy and his team marry these concepts with modern principles utilizing open floor plans and robust fenestration. “The focus on a building’s character is a hallmark of our work,” principal Michael McClung says. “Our structures are three-dimensional sculptural expressions, with carefully considered materiality and balance.” An important factor in those “expressions” is the interactive process between SRW and its clients, who Hupy describes as “smart, inquisitive and driven.” “Each client articulates their desires differently, and it is a valuable conversation when both parties listen and react,” he says. With completed projects in remote islands off the coast of Maine, to suburban communities and western ski towns, SRW consistently focuses its efforts on creating buildings with character.

Ask the Expert What is the key to life/work balance? Getting up each morning with purpose, whether it be personal or professional, and maintaining a high level of curiosity. Share your influences and inspirations. We have always been motivated by the essentials in architecture—light and shadow, solidity and void, rhythm, axis, scale, proportion and symmetry being some examples. Historical examples that powerfully utilize these ideas are always inspirational to us.

I.J. PEISER’S SONS FINE WOOD FLOORS I.J. Peiser’s Sons is a true expert in its field, with a rich and storied history. Since the company’s founding in 1902, it has installed, restored and finished hardwood flooring for the likes of Andrew Carnegie, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jacob Javits, John Steinbeck and Johnny Carson. Today’s clients are no less impressive. Referred to as “The East Side Peiser” for generations, I.J. Peiser’s now has a new showroom in the iconic D&D Building. “We created this space to inspire our clients,” company president Stephen Estrin says. “We spend a lot of time talking and imagining what is possible. When our clients leave our showroom, most will have learned a lot about wood flooring.” Patrons include homeowners and other trade professionals. “We are inspired by the talented designers and architects we work with on a daily basis,” Estrin shares. “They are producing and orchestrating a singular art piece, and we respect our role as craftspeople in that endeavor.”

What style is your firm most known for? We focus on all aspects of wood flooring. Our projects currently range from the restoration of 300-year-old antique parquetry purchased in England to the sleek floors for a futuristic house nicknamed “The Spaceship.” Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? I am extremely proud of our team. Our skilled carpenters and finishers have the knowledge and experience to execute large-scale installation projects and artfully repair and refinish existing floors to their original grandeur. We also have a wonderful showroom staff with a wealth of information they are eager to share.

NIERMANN WEEKS Throughout his life, Joe Niermann was fascinated by antiques, architecture, classical motifs and restoration. The expert furnishings finisher and co-founder of Niermann Weeks could often be found exploring the pages of 1stdibs. When possible, he traveled overseas to browse antique shops. He worked closely with designers, Frank Babb Randolph, John Saladino and Mario Buatta, to develop pieces and finishes for special projects and show houses. He was a man who exuded passion for his trade and craft, and 42 years after his firm was first established, a new generation endeavors to carry on that legacy. Niermann’s daughters, Eleanor and Claire, run the company today alongside longtime employee and friend Justin Binnix. Together, they foster a team of creators who makes everything to order, from custom sconces that coordinate with existing pieces, to a table built entirely off of the client’s own drawing. Regardless of the request, they strive to establish collaborative relationships. “We mostly work with designers on residential projects around the New York and D.C. areas,” Eleanor says. Claire adds, “We enjoy finding other trade professionals and family-owned businesses in our industry. It’s great to make those connections and swap stories with others who believe in making beautiful things.”

“ In the age of the internet, it’s refreshing to see how many local designers still give us a call.”
Ask the Expert How do you work with clients to bring their vision to life? We are currently working on a custom oval table for a breakfast nook in Greenwich, and it exemplifies this perfectly. The metal base will have a painted maple top with a painted acanthus motif that the designer remembered from one of our discontinued pieces from the 1980s.

AXIOM FINE ART | CONSULTING AXIOM Fine Art | Consulting is disrupting the fine art business. “We bring a hands-on approach to the collector, whether they are ‘blue chip’ buyers or discovering art for the first time,” president and CEO Russell A. Glotfelty says. “We want art to be accessible to all, regardless of budget or art education.” Inspired by all things cultural—fashion, food, architecture, travel, interior design—Glotfelty and his team navigate every project with a tailored approach. Given the uniqueness of the firm’s business model, this is key. “We work with homeowners, but also realty teams, developers and investors,” Glotfelty explains. AXIOM begins each endeavor by pairing the client with the ideal team member for their brand, personality, background, needs and style. “As the one-on-one rapports are built and nurtured, our team member will also find strength in collaborating with everyone else in-house, enabling them to provide the utmost attention and comprehensive knowledge to the client at all times,” Glotfelty says.

“ Our goal is to bring fresh life and style to collecting art.”
Ask the Expert What is the philosophy behind your firm? Art is a universal language and incredibly personal and subjective. Every piece of art has an owner, and our goal is to work with collectors at every level to best fit their budget, lifestyle and long-term intentions. Starting collection or adding to an existing one should be enjoyable and fun. What advice would you extend to new buyers? When you see a work that you like and it fits your budget, go for it. Remember that buying artwork from an emerging or unknown artist is about fostering the career of someone you respect and whose work you enjoy. This process is not about finding a million-dollar trophy.

Some view art as an investment. Do you feel that it makes a sound one? Purchasing art is a great way to diversify a portfolio. While there are no indexes on measuring risk, a well-thought-out and researched buy can provide an excellent return on investment over time.

HOBBS, INC. The history of Hobbs, Inc. is one of familial legacy, passionate expertise and smart moves. In 1954, Ted Hobbs founded the firm. A few years later, he purchased land in New Canaan and built a display home that was designed by Edward Durell Stone (the architect behind Radio City Music Hall), featured in several publications and cataloged in the Smithsonian. By the late 1970s, Ted’s son Mike was involved, and he decided to shift the company’s focus entirely toward high-end residential work. This, according to his son and Hobbs, Inc.’s current president, Scott Hobbs, was a pivotal moment. “It enabled us to fully develop our skills and set the standards in a challenging segment of the industry that was just taking off,” Scott says. That, they did. Throughout its portfolio of traditional, modern, contemporary and transitional homes, the values first set forth by Ted are evident. Regardless of the style or the materials used, every Hobbs, Inc. home conveys a dedication to integrity, quality and customer service. “We utilize our extensive experience in custom home building to help our clients better define what they are envisioning,” Scott says. “We then work with their design professionals to figure out the most efficient and best way to execute that, while making the process enjoyable.”

Ask the Expert Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Creating a company in which craftsmen can perfect their skills safely and with integrity. While this should not be unusual, it is in our business. The drive to keep this oasis going inspires our continual improvement and competitive edge. How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? It’s important to have the architect, designer, landscape architect and builder working together from the start.

LINDA RUDERMAN INTERIORS “Educated, sophisticated and well-traveled with a discerning eye”—an apt description of designer Linda Ruderman’s clients, who for 30 years have looked to her expertise to create timeless, classic interiors for modern living. “My passion for the craft, along with my solid design principles, enables me to envision rooms with purpose and livability for today’s modern families,” says Ruderman, owner and president of her renowned firm, Linda Ruderman Interiors. Coast to coast, LRI’s residential and commercial projects showcase her keen attention to detail and her ability to seamlessly reinterpret classic style. While trade relationships and a formulaic process are essential to her approach, the pièce de résistance for Ruderman is “bringing design dreams into reality.” “Every project and interior space must reflect my client’s taste and needs,” she says. Upon reflecting on her firm’s vast portfolio, Ruderman points to the completion of a Moorish compound in Manalapan, Florida, as one of her greatest successes. Tasked with the full renovation, LRI spent two years on the 30,000-square-foot residence, which boasts a 5,000-square-foot guesthouse, eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. Today, Ruderman and her team are preoccupied with several new endeavors, including a duplex on New York City’s Upper East Side and a ski house in Aspen on Red Mountain.

Ask the Expert How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? It’s important for them to understand exactly what services the design professional is offering and how they structure the process. Transparency is key, and it’s best to educate the client about the stages of a project and the timeline in the beginning. What project would you love to take on? I would love to design a boutique hotel in a major city. Attention to detail is my passion, and there would be so many particulars I could focus on!

RICHARD MISHAAN DESIGN From bringing up-and-coming French designers to notice on the world stage, to designing furnishings for the likes of Donghia, Bolier and Theodore Alexander, Richard Mishaan has spent his career evolving into a foremost tastemaker and curator. Of course, he’s still passionate about where it all started, and his firm, Richard Mishaan Design, gets his utmost attention. As do the clients for whom he creates, whether they’ve hired him to design their interiors, architecture or landscape. “I have been blessed to work with great collectors,” he says of them. “We are asked to lend context to their many interesting and unique objects, establishing spaces that are comfortable and livable, without sacrificing the aesthetic.” Asked what that stylistic vernacular entails, Mishaan defines his signature look as “classical modern.” The architectural elements are based in formal order, and they act as his backdrop for more contemporary choices. “The room itself will also dictate the balance we strike,” Mishaan elaborates. “Bathrooms tend to be more modern, while public areas like living and dining rooms are a bit more traditional.” He and his team apply this approach to residential and hospitality spaces alike, completing projects in New York City, Miami, The Bahamas, Colombia and beyond.

WALLCOVERINGS
INNOVATIONS A design-driven, family-owned company, Innovations has been creating unique wallcoverings for more than 40 years. But how did it all begin? In 1975, Rudy Mayer, an ambitious designer working for the visionary Raymond Loewy, couldn’t find dynamic wallcovering options for his clients. Thus began his determination to offer products that would inspire designers and transform interiors. Mayer created Innovations and promised to live up to its name. Now, as it celebrates its 45th anniversary, Innovations is a vanguard in the industry, designing products that challenge the status quo and transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary works of art. But its product isn’t the only thing that makes Innovations so special. Its in-house design team and world-class customer service offer an unparalleled experience from start to finish. “Innovations depends on the hands and the heads that unite to write our story,” Mayer says. “It really is about the people, internally and otherwise, because living up to the name doesn’t just mean design and product; it’s also about convenience and personal service. The moment when a homeowner enters their new space and feels the transformation—that is what we’re working toward, and it’s why I ensure that my team has a deep understanding of materials and designers’ needs. I often ask: ‘What are we doing that is truly innovative?’”

ARCHITECTS
APD ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN It all began with a cottage on Long Island. Some time ago, a satisfied client encouraged their close friends to enter into a charity auction for a consultation with architect Stuart Disston. They did, they won and the initial meeting grew into a paramount project that garnered awards, was published and helped Disston cement his practice within the community. Soon after, he would join forces with David Austin and McKee Patterson, forming APD Architecture & Design, for which he pioneered the opening of a year-round office in Quogue. Today, he runs both this location and the “home base” in Southport, all the while continuing to stretch himself outside of his comfort zone, because this, Disston says, is where success truly lies. “Cotswold, farmhouse, Georgian and Shingle ... by excavating the details in these aesthetics I became very proficient in them,” he says. “At the time, I was on the board of my alma mater, surrounded by modernists. I wanted to break out and explore. It was like walking a cliff, but I prevailed, and working outside of the expected is still an important part of my passion for this pursuit.” So, what’s next? Disston is gearing up to open a practice in Palm Beach, where APD has done a series of projects, and plans to diversify the firm’s talent pool, bringing on interior, furniture and industrial designers.

Ask the Expert How do you see technology changing the design industry moving forward? It drives a lot of the process, both in producing the design and in the end user’s experience of the home or office. Staying on top of those developments is challenging for designers. Thankfully, we have excellent subcontractors, who keep us up to speed on ever-evolving standards. An example of this would be the size of office spaces. When everything is in your hand, you don’t need such huge desks and work areas.
Diane Paparo President 212.308.8390 dianepaparo paparo.com
DIANE PAPARO INTERIORS Diane Paparo’s career proves the power of versatility and evolution. The interior designer, who today owns her namesake firm, Diane Paparo Interiors, began her career in collaboration with a commercial architectural company in 1975. In 1982, she opened the doors to her own business, through which she has created commercial and residential masterpieces alike. To successfully do what one loves for such a length of time, in a market as competitive as New York City—though she takes on projects elsewhere too—is truly an accomplishment. And for Paparo, it’s a joy. Employing what she calls “a practical streak” and her background in fine arts, the designer has earned a reputation for inventive, outside-the-box spaces that are still livable. But above all else, her approach is about the client and location. “Our repeat customers rely on me to give them direction from the get-go,” she says. “Meanwhile, new ones are bursting with ideas that need refining and curating. Either way, I hope to finish each project with the sort of feedback one client recently gave me: ‘You center me.’” Indeed, Paparo strives to get at the heart of a person and how their life can be enhanced by home. “What works for one client or site does not work for others, and we are particularly sensitive to this.”

FOREHAND + LAKE The historic visages of France, Ireland and Switzerland … the rusticity of Montana and Wyoming … the culture and lifestyle of ski-in/ski-out homes—all this and more lies at the heart of a seemingly endless well of inspiration for Ray Forehand and Christina Lake. The design duo behind Connecticut-based Forehand + Lake, they unite the ideas that stem from these sources of influence with more than 35 years of experience in the industry. The result? Homes that beautifully combine scale, context and livability. The latter is one refined through close communication. “We value our relationships with our clients above all else,” Forehand says. “Over the years, we have grown long-term friendships with many of them and worked multiple projects for multiple generations of their families.” Lake elaborates on the journey they embark on with each client: “We always sit with them to get an idea of how they plan to use the space. At the end of the day, this is where their life will play out and practicality is paramount. With this foundation, we begin to create our combined vision. We love the challenge of imparting our palette and underlying aesthetics—clean lines and a timeless feel—while designing a distinct home that speaks to its owner.”

Ask the Expert Tell me about the project that put your company on the map. While several come to mind, one project that stands out was a waterfront home in Southport, Connecticut. The 20,000-squarefoot house was very traditional but also incorporated expansive folding doors and an infinity pool, which was well ahead of its time 25 years ago. The complexity of it taught us the value of research and constant learning. In what kinds of communities do you typically work? Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to have very diverse clients with homes in a wide range of locations. This has allowed us to design everything from an Adirondack lodge to modern waterfront structures and classic country estates.

PETER SANDEL DESIGN When starting a business, why not begin with the project of one’s dreams? If asked, Peter Sandel would certainly recommend that approach. Just a year into founding his firm, Peter Sandel Design, the creator was asked to take on a project at the St. Regis Residences Singapore. So, he established a plan for digital communications with his other clients, packed his bags and began a journey that would result in a stunning condominium and lifelong client. The experience set the tone for a firm that operates on a global scale, through an agile work ethic and collaborative mindset. “Our clients are movers and shakers in business, politics, fashion and television,” Sandel says. “Whether it’s a piece of artwork from their travels, a family heirloom or a peek into their closet, insight into what they value and enjoy guides us. I’ve yet to work with a client who doesn’t have a personal narrative they wish to include in the process, so we function around their busy schedules and incorporate them in every stage.” Surroundings, too, play a role. In a recent Hudson Yards project, the team chose finish colors and material textures that referenced the blue-green gleam of the sky and structures beyond the windows, and the bronze finish of Vessel, an interactive art installation across the street.

Ask the Expert What style is your firm most known for? We are motivated to harmonize the client’s interests with contemporary aesthetics and classical references. But, our portfolio is not tied to any one signature style. Rather, it highlights a range of approaches that are unified in their fresh finishes, custom upholstery, antique and vintage pieces, modern artwork and fervid dedication to quality craftsmanship. How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Lean on your designer and the existing network of trade professionals they have amassed over the course of their career. As a firm, we’ve worked for years to nurture relationships with preferred installers, drapery workrooms and custom furniture sources.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
HOLLANDER DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS “Every landscape has a story to tell. We define that story by paying attention to three ecologies: your site’s natural ecology, its architectural program and its human ecology—the ways in which you will use your property.” This from Edmund Hollander, the president behind Hollander Design Landscape Architects. That focus on client, architecture and site is how he and his firm design properties that, as so many clients have professed, “instantly feel like home.” It’s feedback they’ve received regarding contemporary, modern and traditional projects alike. “It all comes down to conceiving of house and grounds as a whole,” Hollander says. “We want you to feel a sense of ‘home’ from the moment you step onto your land.” Based in New York City with offices in Chicago and Sag Harbor, Hollander Design works primarily on residential and cultural projects, across the country and beyond. Most recently, Hollander and his team have completed work on The Kennedy Center’s REACH campus in Washington, D.C., for which they collaborated with architect Steven Holl. That sort of creative partnership is something Hollander values highly. “We’re always eager to work with architects, interior designers and homeowners who want to establish a real relationship between the indoors and out.”

Our work has been the exclusive focus of three critically acclaimed books on landscape and garden design, and in the past five years alone, we have garnered more than 20 design awards. To counterbalance the blue in the dining room, designer Alexander Doherty selected a statement-making hue, Benjamin Moore’s Forest Hills Green, for the library. ot much of Manhattan resists change, but the river-hugging stretch of Yorkville known as East End Avenue has put up an admirable fight. Graced by Astor-era limestone fortresses and overlooking the urban oasis of Carl Schurz Park, the 11-block enclave has managed to retain a sense of quietude and old New York charm. For a dynamic family, the neighborhood offered a buying opportunity of similar appeal: a prewar duplex with its original floor plan intact. “The grandness was very attractive to me—the tall windows and light,” says the husband. “We looked at new construction buildings, but they just didn’t have the same kind of elegant layouts. It was always a combined living-family-room-kitchen-all-in-one space.” In a world of continuous sight lines and smart-home devices, the discovery of such a classic floor plan felt exhilarating. “It’s one of those wonderful buildings built in a time when gracious living was very much the norm,” echoes U.K.born designer Alexander Doherty, whom the couple was referred to by a mutual friend. “The scale of the rooms and architecture is really wonderful. You walk into the apartment and straight away you think, ‘Okay, I’m somewhere!’ ” “It’s definitely a color story,” continues the designer of his concept. “The client got excited about the use of different colors in blocks. When you get out of the elevator, we have a very painterly wallpaper on the wall, which has a stripe in a mustard color. I said, ‘Well if we do that in mustard, why don’t we paint the front door a really strong kind of lipstick red?’ ” Taking its cue from the threshold, bold hues thread throughout the home, surfacing in surprising details like the walk-in wet bar, where Doherty added yet another spunky hit of red to a shelving unit, and in the living room, where a striking blue work by the artist Caio Fonseca commands attention above the fireplace. But the bravest show of color happens off of the blackand-white marble checkered foyer, where doorways act as picture frames highlighting the vibrant rooms within. In the dining room, Doherty inherited the Delft blue wall paint, which he chose to embrace and soften with pale gray tones on the woodwork and trim. Recognizing that the spacious room would be underutilized as dining quarters for 30, the designer cleverly thought to reorient a smaller-scale table horizontally with the back wall, and in doing so, freed up real estate for an adjacent lounge area for cocktail parties and weeknight hangouts alike. Directly across the way, the library, which serves as both a study for the husband and a reading room for the
children, proves a worthy counterpoint with its grassy green hue. “I wanted something that was going to be as intense as the blue on the other side, but it’s an office and green is a good, calming color,” says Doherty, “and all of that beige, creamy woodwork acts as a really nice foil.” Of his saturated approach, the designer explains, “I am somebody who believes in color—I think it makes people happy. These are not the kind of clients that need to live inside a white box.” Complementing the scheme, Doherty next sourced vintage pieces with clean lines and provenance, mingling them among the couple’s existing furniture in fresh configurations. The family owns a summer house in Michigan built in 1959 and particularly appreciates that era in design—an interest the designer celebrated by scouring Paris markets and antiques shops for midcentury treasures, texting photos to his clients along the way. Notable additions include the mahogany writing desk, wingback chair and daybed in the library, all of which are by Frits Henningsen, a Danish cabinetmaker who designed during the midcentury but whose work appears distinct from the period’s usual hitmakers. While the architecture and furnishings speak to eras past, there’s no denying that this is a modern home meant for a modern family. “Alexander’s style has a richness to it, but it’s very livable, not frivolous or fussy,” says the husband of Doherty’s ability to balance chic with easy, sophistication with comfort. Adds the designer, “The idea here is simply a very elegant, composed space.” A timeless ethos that the apartment’s predecessors—Astor or otherwise—would surely approve of.

Creating an informal lounge within the dining room was Doherty’s masterful stroke. The 1950s Edward Wormley walnut table can be extended to accommodate additional guests, and in the sitting area, Doherty paired a set of the clients’ existing armchairs with a 1960’s Børge Mogensen-style sofa by Mogens Hansen. The handknotted rug is by Stark Carpet.

The inviting master bedroom delivers on that sentiment, mixing existing pieces from the couple’s collection with midcentury finds like the brass, steel and oak floor lamp and new textural elements in the rug from The Rug Company and bedding from Schweitzer Linen.

’ve always felt sculpture tingling at my fingertips,” says Brecht Wright Gander, “but I studied philosophy instead of going to art school.” For the designer, who splits his time between a woodshop in Ridgewood, Queens, and a studio in Alpha, New Jersey, those nascent tingles have not only become reality, they’ve manifested into a wholly original body of work. Encompassing varied media—brass, wood, concrete, foil, even paper pulp—Gander conjures up forms that are at once easily recognizable and very nearly alien. He takes a hands-in approach to his work, the result of time spent in the employ of a boutique design-build firm run by two Rhode Island School of Design architects. “The overtly commercial nature of design felt more honest than the fine arts, which attempt to commodify not only objects but ideas, attitudes,” he muses. “So, I treated craftsmanship as my art school and learned woodworking and craft-driven design. It felt right to learn how to make a functioning chair before I gave myself license to make a sculptural, only notionally functional chair.” Gander’s endeavors run the gamut from his True Jelly of the Beast Dry Bar, a spiky, bullet-shaped cupboard that opens to reveal a brass-and-gold-leaf-covered interior, to his Yo, Burri! Lamps, which look like friendly residents of another dimension. Regardless of their final shape, each piece generally begins with “a lot of excitement,” he says. “I find a material that is new
to me and I begin experimenting: thermoforming, anodizing, sand casting. Sometimes I stew, but I find that if I go into the studio and just start moving my hands in a new way, I’ll figure out what I’m making rather fast.” Recently, the artist has forayed into using computer-aided design—something he admits to being “so-so” at—to yield new directions. “I am frequently shocked at what happens when I press a particular command key,” he says. “The results are often radically bizarre and inhumanly strange. I’m working with those accidents more and more in upcoming designs.” Although he’s only had his own studio—which comprises an arm for limited-edition work and another for “unlimited editions”—for a smidge over two years, Gander has already gained acclaim and established himself as a fresh voice with endless vision. Represented by the venerable Todd Merrill Studio, Gander showed at PAD London, Salone del Mobile and Design Miami this past fall. He’s currently gearing up for a solo show, which will include everything from monumental pen holders to chandeliers. The artist also reports playing with rotational casting processes, a top-secret project involving plasma and his first-ever fashion experiment: a handbag. “There are as many impulses behind the work as I have impulses in me. Desperation, curiosity, a kind of demented fury to get out the bad to tunnel down to the good,” he says, adding, “There is sweetness.”

aymond and Sherry Milchovich originally only intended to update a few key rooms in their West Palm Beach vacation condo. But when designer Jeffrey B. Haines executed their vision flawlessly—“Every detail was perfect right down to the fresh-cut flowers and plants,” says Sherry—they knew a second project was in order: their primary residence in Bernardsville, New Jersey. Compared to their breezy beach condo, the New Jersey home’s Venetian plaster walls and creamy yellow palette seemed heavy and tired. So, when the couple headed back to Florida for the winter months, Haines was entrusted once more—this time with a full redesign of their beloved family home. Since purchasing the residence, the Milchoviches had made extensive exterior updates to the property, including the addition of a pool and pool house surrounded by verdant gardens. This gave Haines an impetus to rethink the
LX_NY45_HOM_Butler_10.indd 232
indoor-outdoor dialogue. A refreshing palette of white, blue and green was introduced to brighten the space and draw in the grounds, while excess doors and dated trim were cleared away to create airiness and better flow. Injecting new energy into the layout, Haines flipped the master suite’s sitting and sleeping room arrangement so that the bedroom would enjoy the grand fireplace. He also converted a rarely used bar into an elegant conservatory with views of the landscape. Notes Sherry, “So many people have said, ‘It looks younger!’ ” Haines, who describes his own design approach as along the lines of “less is best,” aimed to keep the integrity of his clients’ classic aesthetic. “I think they gravitate toward a much more mature, gathered, clean look,” he muses. As a starting point, Haines inventoried the couple’s sizable collection of paintings, mostly 19th- and 20th-century English and French oils, arranging them in fresh configurations and interspersing modern-framed prints for an updated feel.

Opposite: After designer Jeffrey B. Haines completed a gorgeous overhaul of his clients’ vacation condo in Florida, they were compelled to bring their main residence in Bernardsville, New Jersey, up to speed. A soft blue-gray hue—Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon—wraps the foyer, setting a serene tone for the home at the threshold. Below: Visible from both the foyer and breakfast room, the indigo- and cream-toned study is grounded by a wool rug from French Accents. Classic details include a tufted Hickory Chair sofa upholstered in a Thibaut fabric and valance window treatments in a Scalamandré fabric. Once he placed the artworks throughout the residence, the rest of the narrative, as he describes it—as told in fabric choices and furniture lines—fell into place. “It’s like a book with chapters,” Haines says. “Some are quiet, and then in others, a whole story unfolds.” Next, the designer combed the couple’s own antiques collection to select pieces like a 19th-century writing desk and a Tudor Jacobean chest to live on in the living room. “If the scale is right, there’s no need to change it,” Haines says. “I have a conscience about that. If scale is good, I like to keep it and rework it because that’s what lends a gathered feeling rather than the clean slate when you bring in everything new.” From there, the designer layered in a mix of complementary European antiques, like the Gustavian settee and armchair in the entry and living rooms, respectively, which lend warmth and informal appeal. Haines’ goal of a collected feel dictated the bulk of the selection process. After presenting Raymond and Sherry
LX_NY45_HOM_Butler_10.indd 234
with his vision, the couple gave him leave to shop carte blanche. It would be better, he assured them, if he could source from auctions. “That’s where the trusting comes in,” Haines says. “If something comes up that’s perfect, I slide it in. That’s what makes a home mature.” One example is the tall English cabinet he found for the living room, with its beautiful wood patina and original glass, which became an ideal display for the couple’s treasured sculptures and objets. Raymond and Sherry are so pleased with the results that they confess to picking a different room each night to read in or sip a cocktail. While the couple savors their home, Haines has been in Florida renovating the rest of the condo that started it all, and when he returns to New Jersey, he’ll begin updates on the pool house just in time for summer visits from family. It seems they can’t help themselves with the ongoing collaborations. “He did a fabulous job,” notes Raymond. “There’s no place we’d rather be.”
The cool palette continues in the formal dining room, where the clients’ existing walnut table and dining chairs, freshy reupholstered in Jasper fabric, sit atop a Serapi area rug. Haines found the 1920’s Baguès-style chandelier at Avery & Dash Collections in Stamford, Connecticut.
12/3/19 5:08 PM
Warming up the existing Calacatta Gold marble floors and countertops in the kitchen, Haines refinished the island’s walnut top with a dark stain and painted its base in Benjamin Moore’s Galveston Gray in a satin sheen. The hand-blown glass pendants with bronze frames are from Vaughan and the brass sconces are by Visual Comfort.

The kitchen’s French feel makes its way into the breakfast room, with the clients’ dining chairs reupholstered in the same blue leather as the kitchen barstools. The oval pendant with silk shade is a custom Charles Edwards piece. Of his choice to add shutters to the windows, Haines notes, “It gives a very European flavor when you look out onto the gardens.”

Prior exterior updates inspired Haines to choose a fresh, natureinformed palette for the home’s redesign. The lush gardens were a years-long project involving two local landscaping firms, Deborah Cerbone Associates and Wicklow and Laurano, and the pool, pool house and carriage house were completed by Brandes Maselli Architects, the home’s architect of record, in 2008.

he familiar story usually starts with a family trading the hubbub of the city for the hush of the suburbs, but that was not the case for Robert Levine and Abe Dweck. The couple, who had lovingly restored an 1846 townhouse in Brooklyn Heights, realized that while it was a beautiful place to raise their twin daughters, vertical living didn’t quite offer the ease and flow they sought. When the girls outgrew their lower school, the writing was on the wall: It was time to move back to Manhattan. “We looked around and found the same amount of space in a run-down loft in Tribeca,” says Robert, a real estate agent who has honed an instinct for a smart buy. “I was able to envision what it could be,” he notes, recalling the 19th-century brickwork, original arched passageways and decorative tin ceilings that first caught his eye. “We wanted to be integrated and together,” adds Abe, a fashion executive. He worried that with their old multistory townhouse, the girls would “camp out upstairs” as they reached their teens and he’d never see them. With loft living, the family could enjoy a more centralized hangout space. Plus, integrated kitchen, dining and living zones meant that Robert, an avid chef, could be a bigger part of the parties they routinely host. “In the old house, we were limited to 12 for dinner,” Abe says. “Here we can seat up to 40.” For help transforming the dated loft into a comfortable family home, the couple looked no further than their iPhones. “We actually found Studio DB on Instagram,” Abe says of the Manhattan firm. “We interviewed several candidates, but I kept going back to them thinking that their playfulness and use of color and pattern would push us

to create a younger space.” The husband-and-wife team of Damian and Britt Zunino (an architect and designer, respectively) toured the home and explored its possibilities. “There’s a beautiful rhythm to the arches, but it was definitely a design challenge,” Damian Zunino says of the dramatic brick wall that bisects the loft. “But it was fun to think about creating entertaining spaces that felt connected, and details like the sprinkler pipes gave us select moments to celebrate the history and integrity of the building.” Match made, the team quickly got to work designing a layout that offered an open kitchen with a hidden “back-of-house” pantry and breakfast nook, an interior den that would double as a guest room, sophisticated en suite bedrooms for the girls who previously shared a room, and a luxurious master suite with an adjoining home office for two. “It’s all very organized and very pretty,” says the architect. “There’s a space for everything: every pot, every pan, every coat.” The plan of attack for furnishings was equally considered. “They wanted refined but not fussy,” says Britt Zunino, who incorporated a mix of custom and vintage pieces, many of which—like the circular coffee and side tables in the living room—were chosen to echo the curves of the loft’s signature arches. The designer also worked to incorporate existing items from the Brooklyn townhouse. After cataloging the couple’s collection, she selected choice pieces for the scheme to reinterpret in softer, cozier fabrics. Existing decorative layers were also given new life, such as the former living room rug, which was put to work in the hotel-inspired master bedroom. While the designer considers the project “a great example of creating a home that reflects how the clients live,” it also happens to be a prime example of Studio DB’s own ethos. “We like that juxtaposition of old and new, of industrial and elegant. It’s all about balance,” Damian Zunino says. “Britt and I have different backgrounds and skill sets but it’s a very collaborative design process. We work on macro and micro scale from the beginning, so it’s a comprehensive approach right from the start.” And while they may not always agree, they do enjoy working in tandem. “We challenge each other,” Britt Zunino says. “But it’s a good kind of tension!” Unsurprisingly, given the spirited design team and loving family that calls it home, an uplifting energy imbues the loft. “Life takes its twists and turns, but this portion of the story is a happy one for us,” notes Abe of the unexpected encore in Manhattan. “Brooklyn was beautiful, but this is us. It couldn’t have ended up better.”
