LIZ ARNOLD Writer / New York Favorite Luxe interview: I really enjoyed speaking with designer Michael Siller and luxury rug specialist Larry Hokanson about their own Houston home. They are both history buffs and enthusiasts of Russian classicism, and they are incredibly knowledgeable on the intersection of history and design. They filled their interiors with reproductions of exquisite pieces selected during trips to The State Hermitage Museum in Russia, and I still have plans to show up on their doorstep one day to see it for myself! Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met? Eva Zeisel. She was a playful Hungarian-born industrial designer who was imprisoned by Joseph Stalin’s regime before moving her ceramics into mass production, and she had the first one-woman show at the MoMA. Sadly, she passed away in 2011 at the age of 105. Prized possessions: A coin pendant of Queen Elizabeth II—a gift from my late father—that I wear on a long necklace; a vintage French upholstered armchair in mustard yellow that’s so low you feel like you’re in a sports car; and my computer, which stores all of my writing and ideas.

What do you find inspiring about design today? Having nostalgia for 1970s wallpaper, I love seeing the new designs and appreciation for this art form. I can’t wait to put an Abigail Borg paper in my powder room and make it a fresh, retro jewel box. Unforgettable Luxe shoot: One of my most memorable projects was a home designed by my visionary father, Joseph Minton. Not only were the house and location beautiful, but I was also able to do the shoot in my pajamas alongside my dad. On your coffee table: I am inspired by design books and have them all over my house, but I am mostly fueled by fiction. My recent favorites are City of Thieves by David Benioff and All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: The Maharaja of Jaipur at a small dinner party in Delhi, India, when I was 24.

MARK ROSKAMS Photographer / New York Whose work are you most influenced by? Photographer Raymond Meier, who does such brilliant and innovative work in the commercial advertising and editorial fields; photographer François Halard, who developed a unique style in the world of interior photography; and designer and artist Doug Meyer, a longtime friend and collaborator who gives me so much inspiration in regards to design. What type of design inspires you? I really enjoy Santiago Calatrava’s bridges, buildings and public spaces, as well as Brutalist architecture of the old regimes, which are such amazing structures in their own right. Favorite assignments: In 2010, I worked on a book with Rizzoli in Puglia, Italy, and then on a second book last year. They were both great projects, and the memories of meeting people and seeing firsthand the beauty of many things—humanity, history, architecture, life, food and passion—will last forever. I am continuing this endeavor with a new book I am planning this year on the stables and barns of the British Isles.

LAURA FISHER KAISER Writer / Washington, D.C. My biggest creative influence comes from… Viewing art. I try to go to a museum once a week. Dream assignment: I would love to have a time-machine talk show called What Were You Thinking, where I interview famous, and infamous, people from history. Most-loved book: The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World by Andrea Wulf. She rummages through the scientist’s notebooks and inside his mind to show how his ideas helped create modern environmentalism. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Think big, but master the details. Also, find a good therapist. If not a writer, I would be… A Smithsonian museum curator.

NEW YORK WHAT IT IS: Located on Canal Street in New York City, Colony is equal parts showroom and gallery with carefully curated goods from independent designers—many with ties to the area and working studios in nearby Brooklyn. LOS ANGELES WHAT IT IS: A community built by Los Angelesbased furniture makers, L.A. Box Collective started as a way to bond over the group’s shared commitment to working with sustainable materials while engaged in sustainable practices— something they continue to honor through a particularly thoughtful mission statement. WHAT IT DOES: Not only does the collective encourage and provide support to makers who seek to tackle their craft with a mindful approach to the environment, it also puts on joint exhibitions of work completed under a common theme: For example, last year, its 10 members debuted a show at the Craft & Folk Art Museum, titled “Windfall,” which featured new works crafted exclusively from wood sourced from local trees felled during California’s historic San Gabriel Valley windstorm of 2011. DESIGNERS TO WATCH: Casey Dzierlenga splits her time between Los Angeles and her home base in New York’s Hudson River Valley, where she mostly mills wood from her own land before transforming it into clean-lined masterpieces with an organic feel, as demonstrated by the wonderfully simplistic yet impactful aesthetic of the Alma credenza and Lorca coffee table

(shown above and right); while a foundation and love for midcentury designers fuels designer and craftsman David Johnson’s original works as well as his careful Danish modern restoration projects that somehow capture and preserve their makers’ intentions while offering up a little something extra.

PARIS WHAT IT IS: A Paris-based showroom dedicated to introducing international design lovers to the best of American design, Triode is expanding the conversation surrounding what it means for a product to be made in America to a whole new audience. Founder Jacques Barret presents this generation of American classics along with reissues from greats like Finn Juhl and Richard Neutra. WHAT IT DOES: Barret is making the domestic design movement cool again by bringing it to the epicenter of global chic, Paris— home to one of the furniture industry’s most well-respected yearly celebrations, Maison & Objet—and allowing the pieces to stand on their own against friendly competition from all over the globe. DESIGNERS TO WATCH: Based in New York, Anna Karlin’s eye-catching contemporary furniture forms (shown at left) feel vaguely European but are all produced with the help of local artisans; and Apparatus, Rosie Li and Bec Brittain’s illuminated offerings break the mold on traditional lighting from studios in Brooklyn.

Speaking of process, tell us how you brought your visions to life. Our design process starts off very hands-on: We make a sketch and often work with steel, paper or foam models, and then we figure out how to illuminate the initial concept. As an unconventional design group, we were able to “loosen up” and really have fun with the offerings. We quickly realized, though, that fun isn’t always easy; there’s a fine line between a design that is simple and a design that is pure. Striving for this purity has been both enjoyable and challenging. Why is it so important to continue to honor the company’s tradition of craft? It’s a part of Hubbardton Forge’s legacy—the commitment to the handmade—and it was one of the driving forces behind Vermont Modern. Everyone here believes in it, which is good since a lot of people contribute to the final product. For example, three different departments work intently on constructing the actual form—from molding and cutting the steel to cleaning raw edges and prepping the material for welding. After the elements are forged

together, they’re cleaned again before heading to the final three departments, starting with the finishing team. In this stage, the products are powder-coated and cured in our ovens, then sent to assembly, where they are completed and tested before shipping out. Share some of the materials you added to this line to complement Hubbardton’s signature steel. We introduced Vermont maple in a natural finish that is locally sourced from Maple Landmark, a wooden toy crafter 30 miles north of the forge in Vermont. We thought the wood element added a nice natural contrast to the steel, and its natural state adds a touch of Danish modern appeal.

Do you have a favorite piece in the collection? While I am intrigued by the Metro pendant (shown here), and the duality of its piping acting as a functional and primary decorative element, I am also drawn to our Copernicus design. It is very different from anything we have ever done, as it is very minimal and comprises only three basic components: an LED light, steel rails, and wooden balls that act as isolators. In the past, we would have tried to add a forged-steel element to give it something more, but with Vermont Modern we are really trying to keep the design pure by boiling it down to its innate essence.

Hubbardton Forge’s newest collection is innovative and fresh and marks a shift from its more traditional offerings. What was the inspiration behind the line? The initial goal for Vermont Modern was to appeal to a younger, more urban demographic, to people who appreciate high-quality, contemporary design from a socially responsible domestic manufacturer who still crafts each piece one at a time.

Family Affair MCKINNON AND HARRIS EMBRACES A LOCAL, HANDMADE ETHOS, INSTILLING A SENSE OF TRADITION AND PLACE IN THE COMPANY’S OUTDOOR FURNISHINGS.

“We always say that we don’t want to be the biggest outdoor furniture maker in the world; we just want to be the best,” says Anne Massie, the cofounder, with her brother Will, of Richmond, Virginia-based McKinnon and Harris. For the siblings, the key to being the best means keeping things local. The pair opened their doors in 1991, and the area, itself a historic center of craft, provides a spark that has allowed the company to thrive. Says Will Massie, “McKinnon and Harris could never live in an industrial park; we crave the energy and inspiration of our city.” Born from rough pencil sketches, McKinnon and Harris’ furnishings are handmade in a workshop flooded with light thanks to a clerestory running the length of the building. After being refined by the Massies and their team of engineers, the designs are put into production in a process relying on methods both old and new. Hammers, mallets, hand files of varying shapes and sizes, chisels and clamps can be found in the factory, along with a 62-person force of craftspeople who possess knowledge and skill born of years of practice. “You can palpably feel the drive for excellence and innovation and hear the hum of hands working and the sounds of metal being formed,” says Will. Time-honored practices, though, share space with cutting-edge technology, especially when it comes to the company’s coating process, which manages to be both environmentally friendly and effective. Inspiration for their pieces comes from traditional sources: A new collection launching this spring came by way of a nautical-feeling, French Art Deco chair from the 1930s. The roots of new designs also start closer to home—namely from Anne’s garden at her historic residence. “Spending a lot of time there makes it easy to realize what would

make my own outdoor spaces more comfortable,” she shares. There’s also the Wyatt garden table collection, titled after the Massies’ grandmother, Ella Wyatt McKinnon Massie, while their Beaufort club chairs are named after a family dog always on the lookout for the most comfortable seat. The siblings are committed to keeping their focus on outdoor furnishings and their operations local. “Absolutely no one knows as much as we do about building and coating beautiful aluminum furniture,” notes Anne. “For now, we plan to continue innovating and perfecting our first love.” And, in keeping with that smaller yet better ethos, they’re staying small and close to home. “Our pieces deserve to never see a factory floor,” says Will. “Plus, it would be impossible to achieve our level of perfection on any larger of a scale. What made you decide to launch Yatzer? My obligatory draft in the Greek military came up. I had actually delayed it for quite a while, but at the age of 26, I couldn’t put it off anymore. So, I was drafted, and I had to leave my job, the career I was forging and all the contacts I had made behind, and I worried that the year and a half in the military would halt my career. It was this fear, that I’d lose touch with the industry, that actually became the catalyst for yatzer.com. I wanted to stay connected even though I wasn’t physically present. It began as my private blog and evolved into what it is today. Share your most-loved part of the job. I love to attend trade shows and do market coverage because I always discover hidden design gems. Although it takes days to complete my research after the shows, I can’t wait to press the publish button and share my discoveries with people who don’t have the chance to travel

and attend these shows but want to “relive” them through my eyes. But, also, it is important to cover these events for the people—designers and companies—who, although they have participated in the shows, due to their hectic schedules, don’t even have the time to check out what’s happening in the stand around the corner from theirs or in a different hall from the one they are in. Do you have any favorite trade shows? Definitely the first place belongs to Salone del Mobile Milano, which is a part of a much bigger event, Milano Design Week. Although there is never enough time to see everything, it is still the place where the industry’s major trends are born. Next, I have to mention Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, because who can ignore Scandinavian design? And, then, the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, which has been happening every two years since 1968; the careful curatorial job behind it is visible in every detail of the fair. Top five brands to watch in 2017: For furniture, I’ve got my eye on Ginger & Jagger out of Porto, Portugal; for lighting, London’s Bert Frank has so much promise; Fabscarte from Milan has my vote for shaking up the world of wallpapers; Barcelona-based Octaevo is turning traditional stationery on its head; and, finally, Kikof from Tokyo has absolutely incredible offerings in ceramic tableware. Tell us about the products you have on your own wish list. There’s desk sculptures by graphic designer and architect Kristina Dam from Copenhagen. The set comes with a round paperweight in stoneware, a triangle bookend in marble, a wooden cone and an arc in brass (all shown on previous page). I also love the Ora Sculptural

table clock by the Switzerland-based design duo Panter & Tourron—a collaboration between Italy’s Stefano Panterotto and Alexis Tourron from France. The Stadium Light No. 1 by Danish furniture and product designer Niclas Jørgensen is also a favorite, as are the Touch trays by Studioilse for Zanat. Finally, I’m a big fan of the Plugged series of carafes, jugs, soliflore and table lamps by Lebanese interior architect and product designer Richard Yasmine. Why do you think it’s important to talk about design with a multicultural lens? There are many design sites around the world that focus on domestic design, but I believe that yatzer.com gives readers a wider perspective. It affords them the opportunity to see the trends as they are being created around the world, and they can therefore witness their progression and subsequent development. Is there a particular country whose design scene is really interesting you right now? What instantly comes to mind are the wireweaving works being created in Africa. These are amazing to me because the artists are combining modern technology—telephone wires—with traditional weaving techniques and craftsmanship. The results are so unique.

BLUEPRINT NORTON MUSEUM OF ART

Last year, the Norton Museum of Art celebrated its 75th anniversary, and while reflecting on its past, it also looked to its future by beginning an expansive remodel, which is set to be complete in 2018. Designed by London-based firm Fosters + Partners, the redesign will feature a new entrance, 12,000 square feet of additional gallery space, a 210-seat auditorium and a sculpture and shade garden. Architect Lord Norman Foster is spearheading the project by reimagining the Norton as a “museum in a garden,” which will be centered on blurring the lines between architecture and nature. “Our aim has been to restore a sense of clarity to the existing building by reasserting the logic of the original plan, creating new event and visitor spaces that will transform the museum into the social heart of the community,” says Foster. norton.org

Cities on nearly every coast have already mastered the concept of co-creating, but when Danielle Elizabeth Mitchell moved from New York back home to West Palm Beach, she noticed a gap in the market. “I learned how important it was to me to create things that make me happy—usually that happened through collaboration with likeminded souls,” says Mitchell. When did you open? Due was created on June 2014, but the website didn’t go live until November 2015. I spent an entire year dedicated to establishing the brand and traveling. Describe your concept for the shop. Ever since I can remember, I was always traveling, exposing myself to different cultures and craftmanship. Through my journeys, I learned to respect the effort of handmade items and how undervalued they are in today’s society. In college, I studied textile design, so when I graduated I combined my two passions—travel and textiles—into a career. Through my e-commerce store, we aim to refocus how society values one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items and connect the world back to these cultures. The inventory: We offer handmade pottery, rainbow-hued baskets, embroidered table runners, candles, rugs, bags, pashminas and earrings made from artisans in countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica and Colombia. ELINA CARDET

When acclaimed architectural designer Elina Cardet of Perkins+Will relocated from New York City to Miami in 2015, the move came with an unexpected energy within the design community, which struck a chord with Cardet. “Miami is this modern, international city that is exciting to witness how it continues to reinvent and transform itself,” reflects Cardet. This year, the associate principal is also spearheading a diverse portfolio for Perkins+Will, where she and her team are ushering in two new hotels in Miami Beach, developing science and technology projects in Brazil, and designing several airport lounges worldwide. When she’s not adding to her already impressive resume, you’ll find the design connoisseur recharging her batteries in her newfound hometown. “This tropical city, where overgrown, unconfined nature overlaps with architecture, is a magnet for creatives around the world,” she muses. With that in mind, Cardet shares with us what places and people are fueling her creative endeavors in her international city. perkinswill.com 10 a.m. A double espresso latte and watermelon lime juice from Ella is a must while perusing Miami’s Design District. Take a walk around the variety of highdesign boutiques, public art installations, galleries and furniture and materials showrooms. I love the sense of walkability of the area, and it is my goto for quick inspiration. 11 a.m. Then, I’ll pop into Ann Sacks to view swatches before walking across the street to see the latest FSC-certified engineered wood plank samples at Pianeta Legno. 12 p.m. In the same building, treat yourself to lunch at MC Kitchen. The atmosphere is incredible, as is the black mission fig pizzetta. Also, leave room for the vanilla bean crème brûlée with caramelized blood oranges. If you have time, make your way to nearby Wynwood and stop into Glottman for a few of Tom Dixon’s hand-formed copper bowls.

2 p.m. Head to Coral Gables, nicknamed the “The City Beautiful,” and for good reason! Lush tropical gardens, incredible 300-year-old Banyan trees and Spanish Revival architecture define the neighborhood, as seen at the storied Biltmore Hotel, the Venetian Pool and the residential enclaves with immaculate attention to detail and preservation. 3 p.m. Downtown Coral Gables has great design showrooms and galleries. For great wines, try Cava Mezze Grill, and for a quick snack, go to Small Tea for a mushroom tartine. 4 p.m. While you’re in Coral Gables, check out the Perkins+Will Miami office and meet the team—all 55 of them! It’s a close-knit group, spanning architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture and interior design. Some of our younger team members are stars in their own right and have been doing amazing work with the students at DASH, the design and architecture high school, as part of the ACE

(architecture, construction, engineering) mentoring program, as well as doing pro bono work in Senegal, Africa. We also just celebrated 20 years of innovation at YoungArts’ The Jewel Box, a modern, color stained-glass space. 5 p.m. For a dose of inspiration, stop by the Fountainhead Residency open house, where you can meet national and international artists working on site-specific pieces. End the day with dinner at Vagabond Kitchen & Bar, located in the famed Vagabond Hotel in the MiMo historical district.

I’m impressed with Showers’… Innate ability to mix and revamp decorative styles, and her line with Kravet exemplifies her knack for bringing this cross section of furniture genres to one of the industry’s top design powerhouses. Creatively speaking: Good proportions and strong materiality are what I look for in an accent table, and these nesting tables epitomize both.

There is nothing like partaking in daily life (which can be real and messy and beautiful all at the same time) in a place like New York to truly understand the concept of a “concrete jungle,” and this composition reflects that experience perfectly. Visual play: Pedestal’s luscious curves cast against the sharp corners of the concrete highlight Vera & Kyte’s piece in a distinctly effortless and luxurious way. Creatively speaking: This table is a gorgeous compilation of so many periods of design and a true jack-of-all-trades: It’s as edgy as it is sophisticated and would work perfectly in just about any space.

We love that this particular use of the stone blend appears to read as foliage and has a transporting quality. There’s a reference to precious stones with this moody color palette that feels extremely luxurious as well. On keeping it real: In today’s crowded marketplace, we gravitate toward pieces with an emotional charge more than ever. The artistic intentions in Susan’s designs do not go unnoticed here with this dynamic piece.

I find Darryl Carter’s work to be eternally inspiring: He is able to convey a sense of serenity with his nuanced neutral palette and minimalistic collections of sculptural furniture. Material connection: There is a subtle tension between the industrial feeling of the powder-coated metal base and the elegant marble top. Creatively speaking: I’m especially drawn to the asymmetry of the bases and how their restrained luster allows for the angles to pop. I’d love to flank a sofa with a pair and position them askew to bring visual interest to an elevation. The industrial quality… Of the metal and the dynamic twist in the base remind me of artist John Chamberlain’s sculptures made of crushed automotive metal. They both share a sort of “machine age” elegance. On keeping it real: In a very dense world of design, it’s imperative to have a narrative and remain authentic to your aesthetic and values. Carter’s collection with Milling Road is a perfect example of just that.

Composition: I am all about contrast when designing a space, and the pairing of the industrial environment with an as-polishedas-they-come piece feels luxurious, personal and even a little edgy. Finishes are the key… To a really gorgeous design. Oftentimes, gold and brass, albeit classics, just aren’t polished enough for me, but a gold bullion finish brings an incomparable sheen—it’s practically a gold mirror finish, which I find sexy and dramatic. Creatively speaking: Much of my work is grounded in traditional lines and architecture, so I’m always on the hunt for pieces that provide that necessary edge. The shape and allure of Caracole’s design fits the bill in that it’s fresh with just the right amount of flair.

While it’s safe to say we are still living in the era of the all-white kitchen and bath, there’s no denying even the smallest flourish of color can cast an irresistible spell. After all, 90 percent of what we take in via our senses comes to us through the gift of sight, and there’s little that commands our vision more than bright, beautiful color. No wonder a palette change has the power to reinvigorate a tired cook space or bring spa-like serenity to a bath. A color refresh offers a fearless antidote to what are often neutral utilitarian spaces, and who knows that better than designers? For some it’s a minor dalliance—the oft-quoted “pop of color” comes to mind—while for others, it’s a full-blown affair with a particular shade, as in this stunning forest green kitchen. DEVOL KITCHENS This British company is leading the way in kitchen design, offering a fresh take on traditional English style. For this particular project, designer Helen Robson employed unexpected color to create depth and drama. devolkitchens.co.uk

How do you usually bring personality into the kitchen? While open shelves are practical, they also allow the client to display a bit of character, whether it’s through a collection of bowls or, in this case, lots of old paintings. A kitchen is so much more than a utilitarian space and having an area to display something personal helps to create a warm, welcoming feel. What’s your favorite thing about this design? I love that this kitchen is actually a really simple design of four bespoke cabinets. Simplicity is key in carrying off such a daring color choice. Of course, I also absolutely love the room’s originality and how it’s totally infused with the personality of the client. It never felt like she was trying to copy a look, but to devise something that was completely her own.

Share your vision for this project. Our client’s father was an antiques collector; so, we wanted to create something that really reflected that old gentleman’s club look. Dark colors are very of the moment, particularly green. In addition to being on trend, green also evokes nature. Part of the reason it works so well in this kitchen is that it ties the whole space together and brings about a cozy feel in an otherwise cavernous space.

The ever-popular color blocking trend isn’t confi ned to the runway. For this Laurel Canyon, California, kitchen, architect Barbara Bestor used a wall of dark blue and walnut cabinetry to anchor a predominantly white space. “The not-quite navy is a classic color, but here it feels modern,” says Bestor. Carrying the walnut through to the island and incorporating handmade ceramic lights by Heather Levine help balance the angular lines with more organic elements. In this master bath, situated in a Victorian townhouse in the heart of Notting Hill, London, a Spey castiron tub from Drummonds provides the perfect canvas for color. Brass fixtures were left unlacquered and unpolished to allow them to age naturally and acquire a rich patina and golden color. For this Greenwich Village apartment, New York-based design firm Tilton Fenwick blanketed the library walls in a rich teal lacquer, a color inspired by the classic Schumacher print in which the sofa is upholstered. “Since the room has no windows, the lacquer envelops the space, creating a jewel box effect,” says the firm’s founder Anne Maxwell Foster. Not Jennifer Garrigues. “I think of furniture like people at a party,” she says. “You want to make sure everyone gets on with one another, but you want a lot of different personalities, too. And no one should be boring.” It was with this idea in mind that Garrigues, along with architect David Neff, crafted a Cape Dutch-style home overlooking a golf course in North Palm Beach that is anything but boring. When the owners, Sally and Tom Neff, first started working with Garrigues for the interiors, as well as their son, David Neff, for the architecture, they were deciding between either a Bermuda or a Mediterranean style. Then, a bucket-list trip to Cape Town, South Africa, changed

everything. “There was something romantic about the Cape Dutch architecture and specifically the rooflines,” recalls Sally, who also liked the correlation between the architecture and the landscape she observed while traveling through the wine country, particularly the towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Upon their return, the couple decided they wanted a home that would embrace the defining elements of Cape Dutch design. Answering this request, David Neff, who consulted on the project with Kevin Asbacher of Asbacher Architecture, configured the structure’s design with curlicue-curved roof parapets floating atop cloud-white walls. In contrast, the fenestration is a deep chocolate brown with a bronze finish. The high window heads, complex ceilings and untrimmed window and door openings are nods to the South African

inspiration, says David Neff, adding that he slightly scaled down the features from a typical Cape Dutch farm estate. “There, the ceilings would likely be over 10 feet,” says the architect. “The overall palette fits that style, but we adapted the plan to modern living with the wide opening between the kitchen and family room and the multiple French doors that connect indoors and outdoors.” David Neff collaborated with landscape architect Mario Nievera to finesse the house onto the tight triangular site, splitting it into three parts, with the home itself becoming an asymmetrical block linked by a spacious loggia to a guesthouse. They placed the entry on the side rather than at the front of the house, which allowed the walled courtyard to remain private. It also has the effect of extending the entire entry experience. “Whether you are inside or out, there’s a feeling that the landscape is never-ending,” says Nievera. “The vistas are incredible, and the natural light follows you wherever you go. It’s like a movie in soft focus, and you’re in a bubble that immediately shifts your mood.” Builder Michael Conville was tasked with completing the project in under a year, just in time for the couple’s annual Christmas Eve party. He pulled it off using detailed planning and a team of experienced subcontractors. “There was nothing particularly complex about the structure, but the finishes were incredibly custom and complex to manage,” he says. The first swath of those finishes is obvious in the entry vestibule with its limed-oak walls and Portuguese tile. “The tile is an intricate part of the overall scheme,” Garrigues says, adding that she and her teammate, Diana El-Daher, developed concepts and palettes for the delicate handpainted tile. “It sets the tone for the whole home.” 232 / LUXESOURCE.COM

In the living room, Garrigues created her A-list party of furniture. The diva guest is a 19th-century French highback sofa, while the matching chairs, upholstered in Fortuny fabric, seem like two dear friends, and the two white linen-clad sofas are a comfortable couple; the two Chippendale-style side chairs that flank the fireplace are reminiscent of the gracious great-aunt and great-uncle everyone adores. Colors in the fabrics and knotted rugs, tied ever-so-subtly to the contemporary art, are rich without being saturated and offer a little something to talk about. “Good design isn’t always about the designer; it’s about projecting the personality of the owners into every room,” Garrigues says. The dining room is a case study of restrained simplicity. A round pedestal table is girdled with six cream-colored fret-backed chairs beneath a brass-and-bronze chandelier, and a chevron motif expresses itself on the coffered ceiling. Nearby, all the walls of the kitchen, not simply the

backsplash, are sheathed in a dramatic diamond-patterned aqua-and-chocolate tile. This color is contrasted and enhanced by the white cabinetry and countertops. The adjacent pantry is treated as a small room with teal tile, oak shelves and a big window to brighten the space. The white walls with the stone and tile floors that work so well downstairs sing on the upper level as well. In the master bedroom, color comes in the form of a pale teal-and-beige duvet that complements the hues of the ikat-patterned rug. “It’s the use of color that makes this a very beautiful and happy environment,” says Sally. And in addition to the color, Garrigues says that the simplicity of the white plaster backdrop is an essential design element in the bedroom and every room in the house. “It’s the walls that provide the necessary visual relief in every space,” says Garrigues. “They are what made it possible to introduce the tiles, the modern art and all manner of color, which is what provides the home with a sense of drama.”

The loggia, tucked below the bridge/patio area, is open on two sides with views of the pool in one direction and the golf course in the other. Concrete tiles distinguish the rooftops from the white stucco walls; classical Italian detail is added with the curved chimney cap.

pon walking into interior designer Amanda Lindroth’s Palm Beach boutique you’ll find yourself in a space reminiscent of a beachside bazaar. The shop, Lindroth Design, is filled with such treasures as vibrant cotton blankets that beckon to be draped over a pool chaise, rainbow-colored glassware and blockprinted napkins imported from India. “The items I pick are normally very classical in theme,” Lindroth says. “I love the idea of Florida in the 1930s to ’50s—a time when East Coast America came down for a few weeks in the winter, and entertaining for lunch and dinner became a focus.” To capture this nostalgic Floridian mood, Lindroth offers a variety of naturally woven items—from traditional French wicker-wrapped decanters and Cambodian-made canisters to delicate raffia-crochet baskets only sold in Paris and Monte Carlo that have become a customer

favorite. Her most recent additions are wicker trays and baskets with leather handles, a style meant to capture historic resort locales like Miami and Key West. Since childhood, Lindroth has had a keen eye for style and detail. “My parents built a new house in 1972 when I was 9 years old, and I remember putting together a storyboard of the room I wanted—complete with a furniture plan,” says Lindroth. A self-admitted “closet decorator” until her 40s, Lindroth finally took the leap and began a professional career as an interior designer. To this day, her inspirational journey still begins with images—ranging from snapshots of iconic socialites to tropical foliage and Art Deco stripes—that incite her inner creative. “My desk, house, handbag and car are filled with images I print in a compulsive way,” she says. “I love posting them on giant 4-by-8-foot foam cores to start forming the language of my clients’ homes—it can get pretty messy!” LUXESOURCE.COM / 245

Much like her storyboards, Lindroth’s boutique, which she opened two years ago, is a living collage for her inspired leisure lifestyle. “I grew up in South Florida, so the aesthetic is very familiar,” she says. Splitting her time between her interior design hub in Nassau, Bahamas, and her Palm Beach shop, Lindroth is known for her layered approach and chic resort aesthetic. As a decorator, Lindroth’s most important task is to visually enhance a space by playing with furniture formations and embellishing with items from what she calls “The List”—her personal guide to essential home accents. Seeing an unfulfilled niche in the Palm Beach market where these special pieces—ranging from frames to side tables—could be purchased, Lindroth decided to open shop next to the popular Surfside Diner when the opportunity arose. “The store fell into our lap,” she says. “Florida is booming, and it felt like the right time to expand.” But it was more than fortuitous timing that cemented Lindroth as the go-to source for resortbeach styling. Her intuitive knowledge of what people desire in their homes is what draws shoppers to her boutique and what attracts clients to Lindroth for her design services. “I have to read how people want to live,” she explains. “We need to tap into all senses, scale, color and light to achieve the important, unconsciously pleasing feeling in any space.” At Lindroth Design, that is a mission well-accomplished. 248 / LUXESOURCE.COM

he hit song of the Broadway musical Happy Hunting was “Mutual Admiration Society,” a duet first belted out in 1956 by Ethel Merman and Virginia Gibson. “The only fighting we do is just who loves who more than who,” they crooned. Another mutual admiration society flourishes today, but far south of the Great White Way, and its membership is composed of the clients and creative team behind a home in Boca Raton. “We’ve built several homes in that neighborhood, but these homeowners presented the most challenging and rewarding project to date for our team,” says builder Mark Miller about his clients, a couple in their 40s. “Their willingness to work hand in hand with our staff and the interior design team was critical to the success of the project.” According to the wife, the feeling was mutual, as was her praise for the interior design team of Susan Connor, Julie Harris, Vanessa Bugeja and Michele Sommers. “When you work with them, you don’t have to worry about a thing; they take care of every detail,” the wife says. The collaboration that kicked things off started when the couple met architect Randall Stofft quite by accident. The husband and wife were out shopping for a home to accommodate their family that includes a 15-year-old

daughter, twin 12-year-old sons and two dogs. While considering one house, they spied a crew erecting what Stofft calls “a classic West Indies-style house” next door. In short order, the husband and wife were walking through the emerging structure with its flat-tile roof, clapboard siding and plantation shutters. Seeing only the exterior walls in place, the duo recognized the opportunity to customize the interior spaces to suit their needs and seized it. Essential to their lifestyle were private suites for each child as well as fluid circulation for entertaining as many as 40 people during the holiday season. Stofft answered those requests and situated the house to optimize views of the golf course. “The house was sited to take advantage of the double fairway and clubhouse,” he says. “There are expansive front and rear porches in keeping with West Indies plantation style.” The initial interior envelope planned for the home, however, was not in keeping with the wife’s style. “It was ultra-contemporary, and that’s not me. I wanted paneled walls and a grander feel,” she says. “We were living in a heavy Tuscan home, so I wanted this house to be more traditional but fresh and bright.” A predominantly white palette—including Benjamin Moore’s White Dove on the

walls—along with handsome trims, coffered ceilings, white marble floors (mixed with black stone in the high-toned foyer) and other detailing supplied the requisite classical-meetsmodern sense of relaxed elegance she was hoping for. The interior design followed suit. “The high contrast of light and dark tones highlights the architecture of the house,” says Connor, noting the overall furniture palette, which leans toward taupe, including grays and metallics that give depth to the design. “The furniture is classic with clean lines. They are not either trendy or period pieces.” In lieu of oversize furniture, selections are tailored and were planned to allow a comfortable flow within the space.

According to Connor, the wife was drawn to very luxurious fabrics that had a great hand to them. “This was fine for the accent pieces, but using high-performance fabrics like faux leather on the kitchen counter stools and leather on the clubroom sectional allow the fabrics to stand the test of time—and pets and children,” she says. Connor judiciously deployed the wife’s favorite lively Missoni fabrics on accents throughout, including in the foyer, the mezzanine lounging area and the guest bedroom. This injects a youthful vibe, as does the art, which the wife selected with the help of the firm’s art consultant, Deni Quinn of ArtSpex. LUXESOURCE.COM / 257

In the spare-no-expense category, “the overall lighting package for the house was exceptional,” says Miller, who worked with co-principals Don Danielson and Bill Hough on providing the necessary electrical framework to power an extravaganza of chandeliers and pendants throughout the rooms. In addition to overseeing every aspect of the project, the trio also provided the necessary infrastructure for a team of skilled craftsmen to install such items as the mosaic in the master bathroom, high-end cabinetry and lavish backsplashes in the kitchen and clubroom bar, as well as the foyer floor.

Outside, the grounds conformed to the clean lines of the house. “The owners were after more of a tailored look than a subtropical one, so it’s a simple palette,” explains landscape contractor Steve Goodridge. Neat hedges create crispness that complement the architecture of the house, while more graceful palms tap into the West Indies relaxed island vibe. Thanks in large part to this mutual admiration society, the warmth and camaraderie that went into the home permeates every room. As the wife heartily concurs, “We’ve built two other houses, but this was so much fun, we almost wished it didn’t have to end.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 261

he first time designer Krista Watterworth Alterman met the distaff side of her client duo, the wife was wearing a vintage straw fedora and a flowing white cotton maxi dress. “That gave me a peek into her chic sense of style and elegance,” says Alterman, who took that as a sign for the direction their home should go. “First impressions are often a springboard for invention, and I knew their house needed to showcase a lifestyle and the philosophy of the inhabitants.” The homeowners, a well-traveled young couple with two children and international roots (she is Eastern European, and his parents are from Argentina), were delighted to find a Mediterranean-style home in a choice neighborhood in Jupiter. “We loved the layout, and when you walk in the front door you see right out to the pool,” says the husband. Not so enchanting were the drab yellow walls, miles of carpet and the four faux Roman columns at the entrance. At that point, they started searching online for an interior designer.

“There was a lot of typical Florida design out there, but that wasn’t right for us,” says the husband, who admits to minimalist leanings. “My wife is from Warsaw, and we wanted someone who could balance European style with American comfort; someone who could add oomph without clutter.” Alterman, who isn’t afraid to color outside the classic lines or interject bold palette choices with measured panache, proved the perfect choice. Starting with the easy fixes, such as removing the columns and carpet, Alterman saved the tile floors and refreshed the kitchen with new marble on the counters and backsplash. When it came time for furnishings, to say she started from scratch would be a gross understatement. “We sold our previous home with everything in it and didn’t even have a fork,” says the husband. Undaunted, Alterman jumped right in. Building on her initial instinct for highlighting the couple’s lifestyle, she established a design theme she dubbed “colorful

California gypsy.” “Based on who they are, their abode called for a worldly touch,” she says. “It needed elements that looked like they came from their travels—found, weathered, distressed pieces that would fit perfectly with a minimalist counterpoint.” But first it required the appropriate backdrop, and according to Alterman, the primary layer of the big picture was snowy, bleached-white walls. “Then I selected all the frosty linen and cotton furnishings and added in rattan pieces and a hide rug—things that look like they were found while experiencing life,” she says. At the core of the gypsy-mode style, often called bohemian-chic, is a feeling of romance and spontaneity and a collected style that is not easy to achieve. For inspiration, Alterman admits channeling HGTV’s Emily Henderson, host of Secrets From a Stylist. “She’s the queen of the unplanned planned room, and she knows how to make boho-chic feel like a lifestyle, not just a design style,” says the designer, who followed Henderson’s lead by creating organic spaces that look and feel as if they evolved over time. Inspired by seating at a South Beach restaurant, the designer placed two chaise lounges together in the room for a bed-like effect. “Imagine those upholstered in orange velvet, and it’s pure Knoll 1970s,” she says. Relying on buyer talent at places such as ABC Carpet & Home, as well as combing through thrift shops and flea markets, the tenacious designer unearthed treasures such as the Lane walnut cube side tables in the master bedroom, a classic Sputnik chandelier that hangs above a Vamdrup Stolefabrik rosewood side conversion table in the office and a vintage tripod plant stand with an ostrich leather-and-walnut top. Color arrives in the form of accessories such as the turquoise lamps on the living room side tables and accent

pillows and throws in all shades of pink. “I love the use of pink, berry and fuchsia in adult spaces,” Alterman says. “It takes a traditionally feminine color and forces you to see it differently.” In addition to her dead-on design style, the owners heartily appreciated Alterman’s willingness to work within their price range. “She’s a pretty accomplished designer, and she made it easy for us to stick to our budget,” says the husband. For Alterman, whose many credits include having hosted HGTV’s Splurge & Save, paying attention to the bottom line was all part of the day’s work—a particularly easy task when you go bohemian. “This style is meant to showcase a life of travel. It’s about a free-spirited world with items discovered at street fairs and thrift shops—where one person’s trash is another’s treasure,” she says. “It’s the creativity in each selection that’s important, not the price tag.”
