THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

LAURA MOSS Photographer / New York If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Dubai or Shanghai. I think amazing things are being done in these places. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Favorite book on your nightstand: I really love Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Preferred superpower: The ability to freeze time. Best career advice you’ve received: “It’s freelance—you are free to work with whomever you want.” I would not say it’s the best advice ever, but I do love it as it makes me step back and see how lucky I am to be in such a creative field and not stuck in an office forced to follow a specific career track.

Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. If not a writer, I would be… A landscape architect. I love gardens and stone.

Who are some of the most fascinating people you’ve come across in your life? Author Ray Bradbury, designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and photographer Tim Hursley are all at the top of my list. I would love to one day own... An Hermès Leica camera, La Cornue’s Château 150 in carbon fiber and a photograph by Larry Sultan. What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? I would most likely tell myself to take a course on business management—and to buy some Apple stock. Dream assignment: Anything that allows me to travel to new places!

CHRISTINE DEORIO Writer / Denver Design obsession: Benjamin Moore’s Homestead Green paint, which I discovered while visiting floral designer Frances Harjeet’s Queen Anne-style home in Denver. It’s elegant and soothing, especially in a room with lots of soft, natural light. If you could interview anyone, who would it be? Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

ON THE HORIZON: The couple is currently working on a Bahamian cottage for themselves—a 600-square-foot residence that pulls inspiration from historic Bahamian architecture as well as the Creole Cabinet-Loggia typology—and celebrating the publication of Jacob’s new book, titled Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road.

ON THE HORIZON: At the moment, Fleetwood is thrilled about undertaking a residential project for a young family in L.A. that is involved in the arts, which is allowing him to push his creativity to the max. IN HIS WORDS: “While we are supporters of the heightened influx of technology both in the design process and construction methods, on every project we advocate for the inclusion of artisanal quality craftsmanship. When we are successful, you will see form that is handmade and machine-fabricated in juxtaposition. We find it a captivating dichotomy.”

Kirkland, WA | mcroberts-associates.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Duncan McRoberts pours over archeological records, measured drawings and books before building a precedent file that invokes the design principles and tectonic characters of the master works he studies. He then crafts work that aims to achieve a perfect balance in composition, beauty and proportion. ON THE HORIZON: McRoberts is designing a boarding school—in classic Oxbridge-style architecture—and a new coastal-traditional neighborhood development on 80 acres in Oregon.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: For his architectural works, Matthew Grzywinski embraces sustainability, function and his aesthetic experience to design spaces that exhibit a sumptuous minimalism. ON THE HORIZON: Grzywinski’s firm is beginning construction on a residential building in London in addition to a new apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan and a structure on the campus of Cambridge University. The firm’s architecture, furniture, hardware and jewelry reflect a boundless respect for natural materials and exhibit a serene display of restraint. ON THE HORIZON: Dust is working on its first public work: a pavilion for the Tucson Audubon Society’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. IN HIS WORDS: “We are not trying to keep up with current thinking or cool trends; we are simply trying to do really thoughtful, sensitive work. We’d rather be classic than new.”

IN HER WORDS: “My first employer was Richard Meier, a great architect with a great sense of geometry, which appealed to my earlier studies of mathematics. Today, I prefer to be more free. WHY WE LOVE HIM: As design principal at Studio B Architecture + Interiors, Scott Lindenau believes in reflective architecture: He creates crafted, modern designs that aim to allow clients to view themselves differently. While Studio B’s ultramodern projects seem grandiose, the firm strives to emulate a covetable, welcoming lifestyle.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our mission is to engage the power of architecture to stir emotion while setting the stage for inspiring living.”

ON THE HORIZON: In conjunction with the team at Studio B, Lindenau is diversifying his work in both location and project type— producing projects in several states, as well as Costa Rica, and working on several residences, a school, a tropical boutique hotel and a recycling waste treatment center.

Chicago | wkarch.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Dan Wheeler leads his firm, Wheeler Kearns Architects, in creating architectural snowflakes, with each design reflecting a remarkably different point of view and energy. Wheeler’s work captures a fresh, modern sensibility, but each project also has a singular focus on the clients’ desires and the overall mission of the site.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

REASON TO VISIT: Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in collaboration with local arts and architecture organizations, the house provides a variety of immersive, educational experiences through a series of lectures and residencies—so it’s perfect for Wright fans who want a more in-depth look at the architect’s creative process.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

I’ve been looking forward to this year’s exhibits including “John Akomfrah: Tropikos” on display through August 27. 12 p.m. Stop for lunch at Verde, the museum’s waterfront restaurant overlooking Biscayne Bay. The seasonally inspired menu nearly rivals the spectacular views. Try the Squash Blossoms pizza with zucchini and goat cheese.

2 p.m. Head north on Biscayne Boulevard where you’ll find the Bacardi building designed by Enrique Gutierrez in 1963— a prime example of Miami Modernist architecture. Also in the MiMo district are midcentury hotels including the Shalimar Motel and Sinbad Motel. 3 p.m. Drive to Wynwood to see the world-class street art. It’s been great to see the work of Australian muralist Tyrone “Rone” Wright, as well as Nicole Salgar’s mural of the drowning businessman—a thought-provoking statement on climate change and its potential impact on Miami Beach.

3:30 p.m. While you’re in Wynwood, stop into Enriqueta’s Sandwich Shop for a quick bite. I like to get a cafecito from one of the many nearby Cuban cafes. 5 p.m. Stop by the Bakehouse Art Complex. It was there long before Wynwood became popular and gives visitors a chance to see the artists at work as opposed to seeing their pieces in a gallery. Resident artist Mike Rivamonte’s sculptures made from collected objects are extraordinary. 6 p.m. End the day with a glass of wine at Joey’s, a relaxed Italian cafe in Wynwood.

Miami-based photographer S.A. Hopkins always had the desire to document everything around him. With nearly four decades of experience as an architecture and street photographer in Miami, he’s seen the city grow and evolve. “I’d like to think that my work portrays some of those changes,” he says. “When I think of South Beach, I remember the places I went growing up with retirees sitting on the front porch of Art Deco apartments. Today, those apartments are trendy hotels.” His work, best described as visual poetry, captures a true sense of self and place, reflecting a person or building frozen in time. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Here, interior designer Victoria Judge of Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Smart Design Studio walks us through this airy minimalist kitchen. smartdesignstudio.com Share your vision. Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. On February 19th, over 150 design and style influencers descended upon the architecturally significant Hotel Lautner, designed by midcentury pioneer John Lautner, to celebrate SIA’s mission to preserve iconic architecture and design. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Liquid Catering and creative cocktails by buzzbox. Coyote and iBBQ prepared and served specialty meats and grilled vegetables from their exquisite grills, and Jenn-Air kept the party buzzing with espresso samples from its state-of-the-art kitchen. ritt Taner has created nearly a decade of fond memories at the vacation home she shares with her husband, Kerim, and their three children in the Windsor community of Vero Beach. “Some of our dearest friends now are from the area,” says Taner, a Chicago-based interior designer. “It’s like summer camp, where the kids see all their friends. We love our house—it’s our happy place.” Situated on a lush island, the community of Windsor was created by town planners Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in the New Urbanism style, an innovative design movement that artfully mixes private and public spaces. The family appreciated the home’s Anglo-Caribbean architecture—originally designed by architect Armando Montero, formerly of the Montero Group—but after enjoying their home for several years, they were ready to give the home a bit of a refresh. The designer began by lightening up the 3,190-squarefoot cottage-like abode using fresh white tones throughout, including on the floors and the walls, to emphasize the natural light within the spaces. “The home originally had dark cherrywood floors that were in pretty bad shape because the previous owners had a dog,” Taner says. “So I decided to place sea grass over them, which helped make the rooms feel cozier as well. I then painted the floor in the kitchen and on the landing white to add a fun beachy feeling.” She also painted the millwork, which was powder blue, a crisp white. To enliven the dwelling’s new clean canvas, Taner added splashes of pattern and tropical hues. “I collected a bunch of fabrics and wallpapers that caught my eye, brought them home, and spread them all out,” she says. “Color makes me happy. My grandmother, who lived in Florida, was an interior designer, so I grew up with all the wonderful colorful chintzes that she had, kind of like growing up in a Brunschwig & Fils showroom.” As an homage to her grandmother, the designer incorporated several of that brand’s wallpapers into the home, including a lively palm tree print in the master bedroom. “It’s pretty and has a sense of humor,” she says. “It’s fun to lay in the bed surrounded by this Florida motif. And as you look through the French doors, there are more [living] palm trees. We’re in Florida, so let’s be in Florida!”

Throughout the residence, Taner wanted to keep that same sense of whimsy, so she mixed contemporary and vintage pieces to create a more eclectic vibe. An ideal example of that blended aesthetic is the sitting room, which is centered on a vintage kilim rug the designer obtained at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, inspiring the vibrant hues and fabrics for the entire space. “I felt that the rug, with its fantastic colors, would be perfect for the house,” she says, adding that the piece also carries special meaning since her husband is Turkish. To round out the room, which also functions as the entry, Taner incorporated two loveseats with a familial history. “They were in my dad’s apartment when he met my mother,” says the designer, who re-covered them in chartreuse linen. “I grew up with those loveseats, so it’s fun to see them in a new setting.” Overall, the room has a more casual feel ideal for the family of five. “That sitting room was the previous owner’s dining room, but we’re not that formal,” Taner says. The designer aimed to create another intimate and cozy space in the living room. To do so, she covered the walls with a gray grass cloth with a gold metallic backing and added chartreuse draperies and armchairs for splashes of color. She then finished the space with a vintage cocktail table from the family’s primary home in Chicago. “My husband can be watching a game in the living room, and my daughters and I will be reading magazines in the sitting room,” Taner says, explaining how both rooms encourage a relaxed atmosphere. And, since Taner and her husband host impromptu dinner parties, having two conversation spaces comes in handy. To adjust for the lack of dining space, however, Taner incorporated a table in the kitchen, where builder Scott McCracken helped the designer attain a clean, modern aesthetic. “We put in a new tile backsplash,” Taner says. “We also painted the cabinetry, put on new hardware and redid the island, including all new appliances.” Out in the yard, the overgrown landscaping also got a transformation. “At the corners of the pool, there were four gigantic palm trees that I’m sure were lovely when they first went in, but they were taking over the property,” the designer says. “So we took out the palms, which created a more open feeling in the pool courtyard.” While Taner took the design lead, her husband also weighed in. “Thank goodness, we’re on the same page,” she says. “He defers to me on fabrics and wallpapers. But in terms of the art, we always pick it out together.” Meanwhile, the couple’s three daughters each chose the design direction for their bedrooms. “I treat them like little clients, presenting several concepts,” the designer says. As much as she loves designing for clients, Taner finds a special joy in designing for her family. “I have an idea in my head, and I don’t have to convince anyone else of it— except maybe my husband,” she teases. “We’re so happy to be in such a fun house, and I love that our kids have grown up in it. We have so many memories here.”

he lavish Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival mansions designed by early20th-century architects such as Addison Mizner and John Volk cast a bright spotlight on the lush seaside town of Palm Beach. Nearly a century after these homes were built, their grand scale and romantic architectural details are an ideal canvas for Richard Holton’s artistic genius—think faux-bois walls and ceilings, trompe l’oeil and Italian plasterwork adorned with paint and gilding. “I took an early interest in learning rare arts,” Holton says. “There’s something appealing about catching a historically based craft at the end of its existence and trying to preserve it.” Wood-beamed ceilings, antiqued plaster walls and shelving piled high with hand-painted fabrics and wallcoverings from his signature collections evoke old-world ambience in Holton’s 2,000-square-foot showroom located two doors down from his 4,000-square-foot production studio in the warehouse district of West Palm Beach. “I recreated the aesthetic of 1920s Palm Beach,” he explains, pointing to the heavy iron chandeliers. “Visitors see things they have never seen, and things occur to them that might not have otherwise.” Indeed, it’s not unusual for Holton to work on a project for years, touching nearly every surface as the clients begin to understand what is possible. For a Texas estate, for example, Holton and his 20-person crew stenciled rugs on the floor,

hand-painted curtain fabrics and fashioned a dizzyingly complex gilded ceiling with an aged luster using a custom-formulated blackish-bronze glaze. “We turned it into high art,” he says. Rather than using modern pigments that are formulated with chemicals, Holton mixes his own using combinations of natural materials, such as minerals, he has collected from around the globe. “It’s the difference between fluorescent lighting and candlelight,” he explains. “There is a certain color quality that you can only get from using a real burnt umber or titanium.” Concocting the right patina is also critical. After painting a door to resemble antique walnut, or putting together a vibrant color story for an incredibly detailed plaster ceiling, the artist will often stop and gently distress the design—sanding, scraping or even setting a smoky fire to create an aged appearance that would normally take decades to develop. Holton’s emphasis on detail has captured the attention of such A-list architects and designers as Cedric DuPont, who recently commissioned Holton and his team to paint a large canvas of stone walls and Italian faux-marble panels for the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show—one of many recent high-profile gigs, including an important historical project in Washington, D.C. “I want to make a mark on this generation,” Holton says. “I want to create a house like Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Mar-a-Lago, circa 1920s, for a new age of American grandeur.”

or some, becoming empty nesters is a time for downsizing. But for one dynamic couple from the New York City area, the opposite was true. After more than 30 years of owning a series of vacation homes in a private South Florida community, the pair commissioned builder Terry Cudmore and architect Robert Jay Colestock to create the ultimate clubhouse-like retreat for their sports-centric brood of children and grandchildren. The couple—he is a real estate executive; she devotes her time to charitable causes—spent two years scouting the perfect lot. When they found one in Boca Raton that checked all their boxes—lakefront siting, privacy and close access to a golf course—there was just one problem: The parcel of land had a circa-1980s traditional ranch on it that was not at all close to the “bright, sunshiny and happy home” they envisioned, Colestock says, resulting in a total tear-down.

To begin, the couple turned to Cudmore to tackle the project, as they were already fans of his firm’s work. The wife had amassed a sheaf of magazine clippings, including custom-home projects built by him, in partnership with Colestock and interior designer Louis Shuster, who joined the team on this home as well. Frequent co-collaborator, landscape architecture firm KWD, was also brought on board. In short order, Cudmore says, “We had put the band back together.” The clients’ top request for the team: an open casual floor plan with large airy rooms that all face the water. “To get all eyes outside is not the easiest architectural feat,” says the husband, who marvels that the lake is visible from almost anywhere in the 9,180-square-foot contemporary dwelling, thanks to a southwestern exposure that features so many windows it is practically a curtain wall. To create intimacy, landscape architects Krent Wieland and Beth Dawson framed the house with a limited but lush

selection of tropical plants heavy on Alocasia (elephant ears), Sylvester date palms and Asian jasmine. “We had to make them feel protected and separate but also account for that killer long-shot view,” Wieland explains. At night, a ribbon of fire hugs the infinity pool, creating a “doublenegative edge with the horizon,” and color-filter LED uplights illuminate the property to dramatic effect. At the front exterior, a double-height column wall clad in ledgestone contrasts with the home’s lightness as it extends from the outside in. The wall, a prominent design feature, anchors both the foyer and a showcase transparent staircase. Carved into the foyer’s grotto-like feature is a double-sided glass wine chiller that provides a peek into the dining room. “I loved playing with all this massive weight floating ominously above the wine chiller,” Colestock says. “There are a lot of super cool plays in this project between weight and glass, fire and water, yes and no.” For the interiors, the homeowners requested decor that was elegant yet comfortable and able to withstand “lots of kids running around,” the wife says. She also had definite ideas about the palette, which sticks to neutral tones of beachy taupe, warm cream and a specific seafoam, which Shuster, along with designer Gage Peter Hartung, took great pains to match in accent pillows, custom-dyed

wool rugs and even custom slate-stained walnut millwork. “The clients’ previous home had a heavy Mediterranean aesthetic,” Shuster says. “For this project they wanted the exact opposite. So we delivered a timeless, signature look that is not trendy or gimmicky. When you keep the palette neutral and refrain from using too many materials, it makes the spaces look larger.” In the foyer, Hartung collaged a feature wall of reflective tile infused with silver pyrite. The warm sparkly tones draw the eye up to the home’s most dramatic feature: a glasshandrail bridge that connects the two wings and provides a bird’s-eye view of the living room, kitchen, breakfast nook and—beyond a curtain wall of folding glass doors— an outdoor version of the same living spaces.

From the vantage point of the glass bridge, one can enjoy scenic views of the lake and the occasional golfer—not on the nearby golf course, but right under one’s nose—on a kidneyshaped putting green embedded in the marble tile flooring of the home’s expansive upper balcony. “Krent is always coming up with stuff people don’t even know they want, and then they love it,” Cudmore says of the landscape architect’s creativity. The 1,000-square-foot balcony also includes a bar, grill, flatscreen television, remote-controlled awning and outdoor pool table that can be covered to use as a dining table. For the clients—both avid golfers—and their extended family, what could be better than being outside, throwing some burgers on the grill and getting in a few putts as the sun sets? As Shuster says, and as this team proves, “Practice makes perfect.”

eing open-minded is often a prerequisite for being a good designer—especially when it comes to clients with a very particular and singular vision. Luckily, designer Ellie Cullman is well-versed in working with homeowners who think outside the box. “Our firm has no signature style,” she says. “We like as much diversity as possible.” In fact, keeping variety in their portfolio is one of the reasons Cullman and design partner Alyssa Urban embraced a recent project for a young couple with three small children in Key Biscayne. While the wife approached the home’s design with a discerning and exacting eye—no doubt passed down to her from her grandmother, the legendary fashion icon Betsy Bloomingdale—she felt the home should balance cutting-edge design with a fun-loving family vibe. Cullman and Urban, for their part, knew exactly what that meant: The design needed to feel fresh. “It had to be lively and energetic, but not glitzy in any way,” Cullman says. “It was more about a bright and bold color palette.” But there was someone who needed convincing: The husband’s more conservative tastes might not have gravitated to all the Crayola colors and sense of whimsy injected into the home. So, the wife took the lead, working with Cullman and Urban on the home’s signature aesthetic. “My husband didn’t see anything until he walked into the house at the end,” says the wife. “We both have strong opinions. I thought if we both did this, we might have to get divorced. So, I said, ‘You just have to let me do it.’” First, though, the team would have to address the home’s nondescript construction. Other than the main floor’s 12-foot ceilings—some of them swathed in warm wood—the interiors of this house had little architectural character to speak of, recalls Thomas Kligerman, the architect hired to add some zing. So, he found ways to make the rooms more embracing. “The library was a sheetrock box,” he says, “a space you walked through on

your way to the laundry.” Kligerman, working with builder Grey Marker, wrapped it in cantilevered shelves with uplights to invite the residents to linger. Another sheetrock box was a space designated as the husband’s “man cave.” For Kligerman, this became the most elaborate part of the project. To give the room some distinction, he designed a wall of glass shelves framed in bronze. Then he backed the unit, which houses the TV and the bar, with translucent glass and installed lighting that could change colors on a whim. Other changes included an overhaul of the master bathroom, with Kligerman and Marker basically replacing everything except the floor—the lighting, tub, shower enclosure and surfaces. The architect also added a glass barn-style door in the family room that rolls elegantly on a track to open or close the space’s connection to the playroom. In its own way, though, the whole house feels a bit like a playroom—albeit one for adults. The project is home to a wealth of cool, contemporary art pieces, yet it doesn’t fall prey to Miami’s prototypical slick white-lacquered interiors and Lucite furniture. In fact, even the furnishings feel like artwork, such as the dining room’s custom wood table designed by Urban and inlaid with brass pieces. It is surrounded by equally sophisticated dining chairs, but their backs are characteristically covered in citron-colored upholstery—a hue first introduced in a brighter version on a wall in the entry. Daring turquoise and burnt orange shades abound in the living room, while the kitchen, breakfast room and family room mix citron with marine blue. The evolution of the palette was “emotional and instinctual,” Cullman says. Urban adds, “In the beginning we thought we’d leave all the walls white because many rooms were open to each other.” But, Cullman elaborates, “It felt like a design that was missing some spice.” Yet for all the playful polychromatics, the rooms are punctuated by a mix of elegant midcentury furniture and bespoke pieces. “They’re both into the arts,” Urban observes. “So, we found young craftspeople and asked ourselves how we could come up with bespoke versions of many of the furnishings.” These pieces rise to the level of the many artworks displayed throughout—most of them assembled by the wife, who concentrated on young up-and-coming talents such as Los Angeles-based artist Petra Cortright. Cullman and Urban also contributed, discovering, for example, New York-based glass sculptor Abby Modell, who created a whimsical wall installation for the family room. In the end, the collaboration was exactly what Cullman and Urban had hoped for when taking on the project. “We are excited by clients who challenge what our firm has been doing for 30-plus years,” says Urban. Cullman adds: “This was just so much more fun because of the vivid color and the dynamic personalities involved.”

SIW BIFOLD DOORS are designed and fabricated to look like wood French doors yet eliminate the maintenance, selling and decay issues associated with wood. Not all operable glass walls are the same. We are setting new standards for performance, aesthetics and ingenuity. Maximum size is 400" x 120".

SIW PIVOT DOORS are available in a heavy-duty, extruded aluminum with textured ﬁnish to obtain the look of wood. Frame depth is 4" and installation holes are pre-punched for easy installation. Many optional color ﬁnishes are available. Fully weather stripped throughout. Available options: 3-point sentinel system and Low-E glass. Maximum size is 72" x 108" and 60" x 120".

SIW GLASS GARAGE DOORS are the strongest Garage Doors ever built. This product was designed and tested to meet and exceed Florida’s stringent requirements without sacriﬁcing a sleek modern look. Frames are available in white, bronze, various wood grains and custom colors. Stainless Steel package is also available for coastal applications. Available up to 10' x 12' on a single piece of glass and 18' x 12' with divided lites.
