I
t was the end of New York Fashion Week and the kick-off to the design season when I found myself in the spirited world of designer Johnson Hartig of fashion brand Libertine. We were jammed into BGs, celebrating the launch of his new textile collection for Schumacher, and I got to chatting with Johnson about our shared belief in the importance of beauty; how deeply it can move you and its power as a means of emotional connection. Walking back to my hotel later, I thought about what had first sparked my own appreciation for beauty. Coincidentally, it involved Schumacher and a room in my grandmother’s home. She referred to it as the “black-and-white room,” her guest room where I stayed on my many visits. The ceiling and walls were covered in Shengyou Toile and all of the bed linens were made from the same fabric. A large white basin set upon a chic French antique table held her artistic interior garden, overflowing with lush green plantings. The table was nested into a large bay window that overlooked one of her several outdoor gardens, dotted with color in the spring and summer. That room was magical to me; it was beauty and warmth and love. This season, I encourage you to seek out beauty and hold a memory of it close to you. As Johnson reminded me...it soothes the soul.

rivolity, joie de vivre and kaleidoscopic colors are synonymous with the Christian Lacroix aesthetic. The same could be said of the brand’s creative director, Sacha Walckhoff, who stepped into the role in 2010 after Lacroix left the House. Over the last decade, Walckhoff has transformed the company from a fashion powerhouse to a leader in the lifestyle and home decor space. “We are one of the only fashion brands who truly succeeded in going into home decor since Versace and Ralph Lauren,” says the creative director. In his latest furnishings collection with Roche Bobois, Walckhoff has stayed true to the brand’s
theatrical roots, dreaming up a fantastical fairy tale world featuring prints of enchanted forests and exotic creatures living in harmony. “The House of Christian Lacroix is as much about contrast as it is about adding surprise and wonder to the narration in any collection,” says Walckhoff. Each piece in the Bois Paradis collection delights with contrasting textures, evocative shapes and geometric patterns, while paying homage to Christian Lacroix’s beginnings. “This collection is a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: combining the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style,” says Walckhoff. This is exemplified in furnishings like the sumptuous sofa, which features the botanical Cueillette print in a rich velvet. Other items, like the large sixpaneled screen in natural oak with glossy lacquer, serve as an ideal backdrop for the Bois Paradis motif: a silhouetted storybook scene of soaring birds, swinging apes, and lush flora and fauna. Similar dreamscapes appear in Christian Lacroix’s other home collaborations too, all helmed by Walckhoff, such as a fabric and wallpaper line with Designers Guild and, recently, a porcelain tableware

collection with Vista Alegre. Herbariae, inspired by five flowers—the poppy, narcissus, lotus, dahlia and thistle—and designed around two color themes—a graphic black-and-white palette, and a watercolor style that combines soft pinks and yellows with celadon green and peacock blue—brings a neoclassical freshness to the table. “Mixing geometric patterns and floral ones makes each of them much more interesting,” says Walckhoff. “It allows the eye to go from one point to the other when looking at the decor of the room. As Diana Vreeland said, ‘The eye has to travel.’ ” Enhancing the natural environment has been a trademark of the Christian Lacroix brand, and one that Walckhoff embraces. Iconic moments include the Butterfly Parade design created in 2012 that so embodied the frivolities and joie de vivre of Christian Lacroix that it was mistaken for an archival print. “The lesson was that if a design is close enough to the idea people have about the brand, then the design is Lacroix!” remarks Walckhoff. As a multifaceted company, Walckhoff welcomes, and uses to his advantage, a broader vision. “We are not stopped by ideas that an interior brand would not do or have. To be un-experimented, unexpected sometimes helps,” he says. Aspirations include designing a hotel or a restaurant, and with Walckhoff ’s provocative spirit, one can only imagine the mythical fairy-tale world he might dream up. “When your imagination is always on fire, you just have to move forward,” he says. “It is exciting but exhausting sometimes! It keeps me alive.”

TRAITS SCHUMACHER TAKES A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH JOHNSON HARTIG’S FASHION HOUSE, LIBERTINE. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL COSTELLO
Johnson Hartig, founder of the fashion label Libertine, believes clothing should showcase one’s personality and that the same goes for interior design. “The psychology of interiors fascinates me,” he observes. Hartig brings that passion to his new line with Schumacher—a 40-piece collection of wallpaper, fabric and trim showcasing a mix of bold colors and patterns, but with classical influences. “The collection encapsulates him perfectly,” remarks Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “If you were to use it all together, it makes quite the statement. But if you were to pick out separate pieces, they still translate individually.” Caponigro is a longtime fan of Hartig and she saw him as the perfect collaborator with Schumacher. The brand has a history of working with fashion designers, beginning with Paul Poiret in 1930 and later Elsa Schiaparelli and Karl Lagerfeld under the Waverly brand. The Libertine collection is an example of what Caponigro calls the “yin and yang” of the company. “We have beautiful classics,” she says. “But we’re always pushing forward in terms of fashion and fun.” Bringing his own personality to every detail, many of the pieces, like the Punk Rock Mix Tape trim, were inspired by Hartig’s childhood or his everyday life. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ve always been inspired by punk culture,” he says. And the hand-drawn artwork of the Magical Ming Dragon fabric and wallcovering was influenced by Hartig’s own prized Tibetan rug. While his newest designs embody a sharp boldness, they maintain an underlying classic style. For example, the Modern Toile fabric and wallcovering features a contemporary twist on the traditional design using large-scale patterns, and the Java Seas fabric finds its inspiration in Indian batiks from the 16th and 17th centuries. “I can’t wait to see how people use them—even if they use a couple pillows or pieces throughout a room,” Hartig says. “It will be reflective of their personalities, as they are of mine.”

he right rug is a springboard for a space— setting the tone, palette and texture for a room. As such, the floor coverings in RH’s latest Ultra Luxe collection set the bar high with rich textiles such as handspun silk, Mongolian cashmere, Peruvian Alpaca and pure New Zealand wool. DESIGNER CRISTINA CELESTINO EMBRACES AN ICONIC FENDI PATTERN IN HER LATEST LAUNCH WITH THE ESTEEMED FASHION HOUSE. WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAR SARTOR
Formally trained as an architect, Cristina Celestino’s design direction combines traditional elements connoting heritage with a contemporary aesthetic. As a fellow Italian interior and product designer with a passion for legacy, it was quite fitting that Fendi Casa tapped Celestino for its latest groundbreaking collection, Back Home. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the inspiration behind the collaboration with the renowned fashion label. You first worked with Fendi designing one-ofa-kind furniture for the Design Miami booth in 2016. What came next? I worked with Fendi on the Omotesando store in Tokyo, where the Design Miami concept was adapted to a pop-up using everything from the furniture to wallcoverings. Some of those pieces—mostly low tables and sofas—were then chosen and produced exclusively for several Fendi boutiques worldwide. Silvia Venturini Fendi trusted in my
vision and thought that my collection represented the Fendi world, but also had strong potential commercially. After suggesting my work to Raffaella Vignatelli, the president of Fendi Casa, this collection, Back Home, was born.
company and an Italian family heritage brand run by women, both Fendi and Fendi Casa, who offered me complete freedom in the design process. We shared a common vision, so it was a very easy collaboration from start to finish.
And the influence? Silvia Venturini Fendi asked me to create a collection of furniture inspired by the Pequin—Fendi’s signature broad stripe pattern—created back in 1987, the same year Fendi Casa launched. As for the inspiration, the overall mood is from the ’70s—and, in particular, the interiors and furniture of Willy Rizzo, a decorator and photographer who worked in Rome in the mid-60s. He mixed refined luxury with a modern vision in a bold and distinct way using very rich material combinations and finishes.
Any favorites? That would be like asking a parent to name a favorite child—it’s impossible! I love different elements in each of the pieces, and I love that they work alone as either statement and iconic pieces, or equally well together.
This is a large collection—14 products! What was it like to work with the Fendi Casa team? It was an honor to collaborate with such an iconic
What were your aspirations for this collection? My hope, as it is with all of my designs, is to create pieces that express a message and a story beyond the aesthetic value. One that people remember. Fendi Casa’s quality is impeccable, so if people choose to pass this furniture down, they can certainly do so, but I never design with those preconceptions. I simply follow my heart and my imagination.

As trends come and go, a design store must be truly distinctive to rise to the top and remain there for three decades. Miller’s Fine Hardware, which recently celebrated its 30 th anniversary, has demonstrated both stamina and style, thanks to the vision of owner Vicki Pfeil. With locations in Jupiter and West Palm Beach, Miller’s has set the standard for luxury kitchen, bath and lighting fixtures. We recently spoke with Pfeil about brandbuilding and creating her ideal kitchen. millershardware.com Store’s specialty: As the retail industry evolves with the internet, we wanted to focus more on highlighting special, exclusive lines like Waterworks, Samuel Heath and Fantini Rubinetti. And we try to find a good mixture of styles to satisfy our clientele, from traditional to transitional. Favorite kitchen, bath and lighting trends: Here in Palm Beach, we’re seeing a softer version of the traditional style, featuring crisp, clean finishes and monochromatic tones in whites and grays. And when it comes to lighting, our brands are really embracing a more industrial design, with exposed metal details—like something you’d find in a workshop. But there’s always room for a little crystal.

Blurring the line between interior and exterior in a home: Can it really be done? Sliding glass doors often replace solid walls, but fusing inner and outer spaces requires more. Designers Susan Connor, Marisa Courson and Jessica Rockwood of P&H Interiors united the taste of a couple (he’s traditional; she’s contemporary) inside their Lighthouse Point home. Then they linked indoors and outdoors via materials and color. Brick on the kitchen ceiling reappears as veneer on the summer kitchen’s pizza oven. Quartzite countertops are replicated on the patio’s bar and fireplace. Blue on the island emerges outside on accent pillows and side tables. And, of course, the most obvious azure reference points, the sky and sea, are insightful creations by the most powerful designer of all. pnhinteriors.com
Memorable projects: Over the years we’ve been able to source some unusual pieces for the designers we work with. We put together a mosaic tile tray for a sink and a lion’s-head wall filler for a powder room. There’s one home in Weston that has a bowling alley, and we did a nice locker-style bathroom to accompany the space. Your dream kitchen: I just refinished my kitchen, actually. I went for a modern interpretation of a Shaker style. I love the classic lines. For finishes, I opted for large subway tiles and chrome fixtures. The Rubell Family Collection in Wynwood has consistently stood out for its approach to art curation. Soon the perspective of collectors Don and Mera Rubell will be on a grander stage: The Rubell Museum, a 100,000-square-foot campus in Allapattah, opening December 4. Housed in a former industrial building transformed by New York’s Selldorf Architects, the museum will pull from 7,200 works by 1,000 artists. And due to the Rubells’ generosity toward artists in their early years, the collection includes pieces from acclaimed talents like Keith Haring (below) and Jeff Koons. The revamped 41-guest-room boutique hotel maintained its historic Streamline Moderne exterior seen on the silver screen in several films, from ’59’s A Hole in the Head with Frank Sinatra to ’96’s The Birdcage starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Owners Emilio and Gloria Estefan worked with architect Aldo Ducci to refresh the interiors with contemporary white finishes that provide a canvas for artwork from their personal collection. A shimmering palette of materials adds subtle allure to the new rooms and suites, featuring mother of pearl and gold accents. Bohemian flair reaches new levels of refinement in the recent renovation of the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove hotel. Influenced by the area’s legacy as a haven for artists, Bill Rooney Studio sought to stylishly bridge the gap between sleek city retreat and tropical enclave. Taking cues from the property’s verdant surroundings, the team infused natural hues into the main lobby, with leather-wrapped columns and deep green velvet furniture. The reimagined guest rooms also showcase soft blue accents and a variety of organic textures, including raffia wallcovering, live-edge wood furniture, and modern rattan seating. Full immersion into nature is complete at the new Isabelle’s Grill Room and Garden (a tribute to one of the Grove’s earliest settlers, Isabella Peacock) which boasts a trellised garden terrace that nestles diners among lush landscaping and rich wood details. ritzcarlton.com

C COCONUT GROVE Owned by Italy’s famed Cipriani family and inspired by lavish yachts, the new Mr. C Coconut Grove hotel distills the experience of cocktail hour on the high seas, featuring a streamlined, modern design by Arquitectonica. Floating on V-shaped pillars, the structure echoes luxury ocean liners of the past with porthole details and sweeping terraces that overlook Biscayne Bay and the Coconut Grove skyline. AROUND TOWN When eight ambitious designers get their hands on five brands of lavish furnishings, they’re liable to put on a show, or, more accurately, a show house. Design Force Miami—not a squad of stylish superheroes, but a local collective consisting of Brett Sugerman and his wife, Giselle Loor Sugerman, Miguel Lewis, Odalys Hernandez, Janet Patterson, Joe Fava, Jay Britto and David Charette—has collaborated with Luxury Living Group on The Residence in Miami’s Design District. Luxury Living Group, the company that created furnishing collections with Fendi, Trussardi, Bentley and Baccarat, to name a few, provided their wares and the 7,700-squarefoot space. Design Force Miami brought the ideas, crafting lively interiors for an imaginary South American client. Amid the turquoise and cobalt velvet sofas, lacquered case goods and gleaming metallic accents are also eye-catching contributions from district neighbors: wallcoverings by Orlean, floral displays by Emilio Robba and fine art from Opera Gallery. Where others see a dining table, surface designer Nicolette Mayer sees an empty canvas begging to be adorned with lush art and antiquity. That’s the genesis behind the Boca Raton-based brand’s latest project, a vibrant tabletop collection of placemats, napkins (top) and decorative acrylic trays. With a background in historical research, Mayer has attracted a loyal following for her modern interpretations of traditional motifs for wallpaper and textiles. The new line includes some of the brand’s most beloved historical patterns, like the modern chinoiserie Blossom Fantasia (above) and Turkish-inspired Topkapi Garden (featured at the 2019 Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House). Mayer also contrasted these classical styles with new high-octane designs inspired by contemporary art, from Damien Hirst’s technicolor pills to Okunade’s kaleidoscopic animals. Today, the kitchen is the main hub of the house, so set the scene with an oversize vase brimming with greenery. For this space, Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, chose olive tree branches, which can last for weeks. Previous page: A gorgeous floral arrangement is a must when entertaining in your dining room. “It anchors the space, sets the tone and can be a great conversation starter,� says Kirk, who styled the display with anemones, sedum, dahlias and magnolia branches in a generous white vase.

For a row house renovation in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park, Rebekah Zaveloff’s clients requested one element straightaway: a woodburning fireplace in the kitchen. The family has a summer home in Vermont with an outdoor pizza oven and wanted to bring a similar vibe to this residence. Thankfully, Zaveloff, the designer and cofounder of KitchenLab Interiors, was completely on board. “It’s all about creating spaces that feel a certain way, evoke emotion or a sense of nostalgia,” Zaveloff explains. In this case, the homeowners desired a kitchen that would recall vacation all year long. kitchenlabinteriors.com The fireplace is such a defining feature. How did you decide on its placement within the kitchen? I know from working in old homes that adding fireplaces can be a very challenging undertaking. There is a lot to consider, including chimney size, structural issues, converting gas lines, ventilation and so on. Originally, we had designed the fireplace to go on the back wall between the windows but when we demolished the space, we found an old chimney in the corner and the location really ended up being a happy accident.

Tell us about your approach to pattern. The patterned concrete floor tiles make the space here! In so many kitchens we incorporate wood floors, as people are nervous to commit to pattern, but the wood on wood can start to blend; it can be challenging to create contrast. Here, the tile adds a dose of drama but isn’t overwhelming. I did several versions of the design until we came up with something everyone loved with just the right balance of black and white. 160 / LUXESOURCE.COM
How is the dining room used? This space certainly changed once we opened it up to the kitchen. Before, the two rooms were separated by a large volume that housed a pantry and powder room; it felt choppy. Now, everything flows together nicely. So I decided to do away with dedicated dining, living and hall areas and instead put seating everywhere. I believe if you make spaces welcoming, people will use them!

Think outside the box when it comes to the mantel. Fig branches provide an interesting pop of green while a marbleized teapot adds unexpected charm and a pretty silhouette. Few things are more important than good lighting and a scattering of candlesticks ensures the festivities will continue by candlelight, says Kirk.

A good tray is the unsung hero of the bar: It instantly corrals bottles and glassware making the space look more put together. Fresh herbs in small vessels are a nice alternative to florals and allow guests to be creative while mixing their own cocktails. As Luxe uncovers, it’s the entirely personal and surprising experiences that leave a lasting impression. Mind you, this “new” approach to fine entertaining isn’t so much new as a swinging of the pendulum: “Mrs. Astor was known for her infamous Midnight Suppers,” recalls event designer Rebecca Gardner. “These were intimate after-parties where she served ridiculously casual food like spaghetti and meatballs on her finest china. The beginning of high-low!” Take a page from the infamous socialite’s book, and toast to the season.

HISTORY REPEATS In Victorian-era England, drawing rooms were a prerequisite for any fine home, providing an elegant hub to “withdraw” for post-dinner merriment. Fast-forward a century and change, and the room’s intentionality is enjoying a renaissance, thanks to reinvigorated demand for defined entertaining spaces. Here, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners adapted the concept on the parlor floor of a historic 1856 Chelsea townhouse, deftly eschewing any stuffy connotations in the process. “We reinterpreted the home’s original Italianate revival moldings into a more streamlined and proportionate version that still held the intended gravitas of the room,” explains Kevin Blusewicz, senior associate at Steven Harris Architects. Joined by convivial seating arrangements, a “discrete yet assertive” color scheme and impressively scaled new windows that bathe the room in sunlight, the grand bones appear to soften and relax. reesroberts.com

The key is to be a little irreverent with anything fancy. One way to do this is to layer patterns on top of each other, like a floral Meissen dinner plate on top of a chintz fabric. I prefer big, luscious flowers that are just about to fall apart and unruly vines that twist around place settings. You can also repurpose: consider fingers bowls for ice cream sundaes and nut dishes for colorful candies. I use single flowers in powerfully simple arrangements, without any “filler” or greens. I base the overall sculptural shape on what’s available at the market each morning. Clients are asking for: English roses! And seasonal flowers, like tree peonies and fresh French lavender. Floral wisdom to live by: Less is more. Focus on quality flowers displayed in special, handmade vessels. People appreciate these two elements now more than ever.

IN GOOD SPIRITS ⊲ Throughout the hotel’s 36 king rooms, a festive tone is set by the trading of nightstands for decadent bedside minibars. A selection of top-shelf libations— amongst them, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whiskey and Ruinart Brut Rosé—sit atop a bespoke bar cabinet, which in turn encloses an artful collection of highball and champagne glasses. Brass ice buckets in the shape of a pineapple cheekily harken back to the hotel’s overarching design goal: moments of rebellion within the envelope of traditional hospitality.

DOUBLE ACT Litchfield, Connecticut-based architect and designer Julia Metcalf is not a fan of the phrase “she shed,” but admits it applies to this jewel box study, which moonlights as a chic cocktail lounge. “The client wanted a place to hide away, to work and to entertain in privacy,” says Metcalf. To welcome the addition of company, a traditional desk chair was replaced with a custom settee, and the Zuber wallpaper-clad bar area holds a rainbow of vintage glassware (sourced at the Brimfield Antique Show) set atop highgloss, piano-finish built-ins concealing a petite wine refrigerator. Ingenuity and collaboration are hallmarks of American industry, and WineCab exemplifies that heritage beautifully. After recognizing limitations within premium wine storage and display, Mark Chaney combined his own passion for vinology with the revolutionary technologies of his first major business, Calvary Robotics. The result is a series of products that have changed forever the oenophile’s experience. “Our robotically managed models offer precision-controlled temperature and humidity settings, cataloging specific to individual bottles and overall inventory management, automatic replenishment and pouring capabilities, fingerprint locks and smartphone integration,” Chaney says. We also feel that working on a local level enables us to be hands-on throughout the process, from quoting to design to installation, and hire outside professionals who can be relied upon for in-person support.”

ith sugar-white coastlines and crystalline waters, Miami exists as a sundappled utopia in many minds. But a nuanced, more complicated paradise is portrayed in the ceramics and drawings of local artist Morel Doucet. His creations yield otherworldly landscapes that reveal the city’s changing habitat, environmentally and socially. “I’m interested in exploring the human connection to nature,” he explains. “My work is about seeing our surroundings in their raw form and understanding their real history.” Doucet has filtered his own history through nature since moving as a child from Haiti to Miami in the early 1990s. “Here, the landscape was familiar, with the same palm trees and plants,” he recalls. “I learned then to see the landscape through the lens of memory.” Art magnet school programs were also fruitful creative ground, and Doucet quickly gravitated to clay. “I come from a farming family on my mother’s side, so I grew up around this rich red earth,” he says. “Clay in its raw form made me feel more connected to the land.” When Doucet returned to Miami in 2013, after graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art, his relationship with nature intensified. As rising sea levels and red tide affected the coastline, historically black neighborhoods like his own, Little Haiti, faced gentrification pressure from developers. He confronts this notion in his ceramic series, “White Noise: When Raindrop Whispers and Moonlight Screams in Silence.” The artist slip casts and hand-carves elaborate shells, sea creatures and coral polyps in pristine porcelain, which echo bleached coral reefs. These ghostly forms creep over replicas of childhood relics, like his mother’s rococo-style teapots, or completely consume figurines, erasing their faces and bodies.
For Doucet, stripping away nature’s hues also evokes the painful history of colorism in the black community—particularly skin bleaching, a practice “still prevalent in Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic,” he notes. Nature is medium and message in “The Dirt Beneath Our Nails Still Pray to the Midnight Sun,” Doucet’s drawings that aim to record and preserve “Miami’s black communities through their plants and people,” he says. His process entails layering organic matter from towns such as Allapattah, Carol City and Overtown onto his charcoal portraits of residents. “I’m essentially an archaeologist in the streets, picking up branches, pine cones and leaves,” he says. Doucet’s sunny studio at the Bakehouse Art Complex holds the artifacts, waiting to inspire a shape, color or memory in his work. And when all else fails, “I go outside,” he says. “Once I’m in nature, everything becomes more concrete.”

W
hen winter arrives in New England, Bill and Emma Roberts won’t be around. The Massachusetts couple will have flown down the coast to their newly renovated Palm Beach bungalow, leaving a snowy land far behind. The 1960s house was just what the Robertses were looking for, so when it appeared on the market, they jumped. “They texted me the listing photo with the note, ‘Your next project,’ ” recalls designer Leandra Fremont-Smith. “It was such fun to think about.” The homeowners were of the same mindset. “Bill and I work a lot and need our homes to be peaceful sanctuaries,” Emma says. “We always lean toward casual elegance, continuity of color and a calm environment.” Their Boston residence emanates understated formality, while their summer house in Maine—also by Fremont-Smith—takes its cozy cues from the Arts and Crafts creations of William Morris. Yet the designer had an inkling her clients might be open to a different aesthetic for the bungalow’s interiors. She was correct. “It’s traditional with a fresh, vibrant feel,” notes FremontSmith, who worked with project manager Andrea DiBello. “We combined hand-blocked wallpapers and bohemian fabrics with a neutral backdrop and punches of color.” Plans for a low-key renovation, signed off by architect

of record Jeremy Walter of Jeremy K. Walter Architects, establish a breezy setting for the midcentury structure. General contractors Ken Weitz and Steve Romanowski, along with builder Justin Romanowski, made changes such as remodeling bathrooms, enlarging doorways and transforming a linen closet into a cheery wet bar with woodwork painted a glossy orange inspired by the Hermès signature shade. “Leandra gave us her inspiration picture, and then we did the geometry to fit the space,” Weitz says about the cocktail nook. “I love its intricate cabinetry.” The bar is the most prominent of several orange accents Fremont-Smith incorporated throughout the home, pairing the hue with complementary shades of blue to ramp up the Floridian ambience. A pale blue ceiling emphasizes the openness of the living and dining areas, while patterned wallpaper enlivens private spaces. The powder room shows off a bold palm tree design (“Palm Beach was the perfect place for it,” the designer notes), and another wallcovering strategically creates a tented sensation in a guest bedroom. “We chose a hand-blocked paper from Pierre Frey and carried it up to the ceilings to add height,” Fremont-Smith explains. “It’s an elegant backdrop for this room. It’s inventive and restful and adds a layer of detail.” Like their surroundings, furnishings balance neutrals and prints, drawing the eye to statement pieces: a blue and white rug in the dining area, a tortoiseshell cocktail table in the living space, patterned pillows throughout. They also partner with Antique Row finds, sourced serendipitously—like the pair of wood pedestals that support the dining table’s glass top. “It’s fun to hunt, especially in Palm Beach,” FremontSmith says of shopping locally. The interiors’ energetic vibe continues outdoors, where landscape designer Jeffrey Thompson manicured the modest grounds with plantings like jasmine and calamondin orange trees. “It’s a postage stamp garden, so we stayed true to the straight lines of the existing hardscape, creating gathering points and a new patio off the master,” he says. Framed by a hedge wall, the backyard features a pool at its center and is enhanced by natural fragrances. “I love taking my shoes off and opening the sliding glass doors,” Emma says. “Nothing is better than the gardenias blooming by the pool.” Between the relaxing outdoor spaces and the sunny interior, the home is a place for the owners to catch their breath. “Having such busy work lives, we relish arriving in Palm Beach,” Emma says. “The moment we walk through the front door, the weight of the day vanishes.”
Designer Leandra Fremont-Smith created a welcoming vignette in this Palm Beach living area by pairing a rattan bench from Circa Who with Hunt Slonem’s Green Bunny and Blues Bunny, sourced from DTR Modern Galleries. esigner Rod Mickley isn’t afraid of playing with color. On the golf course, he’ll pair a dark blue shirt with pink shorts and an orange belt—and stylishly pull off the vibrant look. So when a couple consulted Mickley about refreshing the interiors of their elegant second home in Vero Beach, he quickly realized they were clients after his own heart. “I showed them different pieces of furniture, textures and fabrics, and each time I threw down something with a lot of color, they’d point to it and say, ‘That!’ ” he recalls. “I knew almost immediately what to do.” The residence, located in Windsor, melds classic southern and island architecture with modern flourishes such as cantilevered balconies and expanses of glass. Created with an indoor-outdoor lifestyle in mind, the layout directs guests from the front door toward the open-air living space, complete with a lap pool and sitting area. The airy structure includes a large living area, a master bedroom and a loft. A pair of coach houses are also at the ready to accommodate guests. The exterior had been painted a neutral hue; the inside was clean and white. But once Mickley set foot on the property, things started to change. “When I was younger, I really wanted to be an artist,” he recalls. “I wanted to go to art school, but my

mother told me I needed a profession, so I went into interior design. My love of art comes out in what I do—not that I couldn’t do a white-on-white interior, but I love to mix things.” Mickley’s bohemian blend of colors and forms begin with the dining area’s whimsical light fixture, a dozen pendants with global-patterned woven lampshades made of recycled plastics and soda bottles. He paired the bold piece with a rectangular light wood table and an oversize acrylic abstract on a nearby wall. “It easily could have looked like a modern art museum,” the designer says of the space. “But we brought in warmth through wicker chairs around the dining table.” The “incredible light” pouring in through the large windows and 10-foot-high doors inspired the home’s palette, Mickley says. He pulled in the blue skies, nature and sunshine with well-considered turquoise, gold and red patterned fabrics; woven area rugs; and sun-bleached wooden pieces, such as the sculptural twin wall mirrors in the hallway between the kitchen and the master bedroom. Spanning 18 to 35 feet, the ceilings’ monumental height left the home feeling equally airy and cavernous. To make the rooms feel more intimate, Mickley strategically hung abstract artwork throughout at 12-14 feet off the ground, lowering the visual focus. The human scale is especially evident in the living area, where vibrant shades and varied patterns lead the eye around the space—from the tribal print pillows to a beaded African stool and a vintage chair with bird profiles carved into the arms. “When I’m not restrained by someone’s taste, I’m told there can be a very ethnic influence to my work,” Mickley says. “But I do it in a way where everything plays off everything else, and there’s a balance. There’s a great amount of color, texture, simplicity and complication in this house. That yin and yang is what makes it so livable.” The strategy continues in the master bedroom, where the designer cleverly minimized the voluminous space. Between two mirrored 10-foot-tall doors, he displayed a geometric grass-cloth mural that mimics the clean lines of the 9-foot-tall canopy bed. The mural’s blues and greens also echo the sitting area’s palm print armchairs, which offer a nod to the landscape outside. The final design is anything but typical, yet totally Mickley. “Don’t make me do something because you think your friends will like it,” he tells his clients. “Do it because you like it. That’s what makes things fun.”
