N FORWARD WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! The pundits agree a Puget Sound rebound is in full swing. We note considerable gains in median home prices, expanding demand, increasing sales volumes and improving consumer confidence. It’s remarkable that five years of real estate pessimism can be replaced by a single year of good news but that’s precisely what’s happening here at home. Our affiliates across the country concur that the worst is behind us and that America is looking forward. This sentiment best symbolized by the completion of One World Trade Center in New York City, which at 1,776-feet tall upon the very site of the 9/11 tragedy, stands as a beacon of US resilience.

Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

BEAUTY MARK

oes beauty matter? I recently listened as a designerfriend reflected on the perception by many that decorative pursuits can feel like a frivolous concern. Certainly practical matters of daily life—the commute
to the office, the contract awaiting signature, the phone call you need to return—can eclipse our quotidian attentiveness to art and beauty. With designer Jamie Drake at the Flexform showroom in New York.

awe, uneasiness and disquiet, serenity, wonderment, and reflection. Beauty lurks everywhere: in the minutiae of a peony petal and in the grand force of Frank Gehry’s DZ Bank in Berlin, which I stood in awe of earlier this year. Far from being flippant, beauty is an expression of creativity that grounds us. We should care deeply about the placement of a chair, the color of a wall, the pattern repeat of a textile. Pay attention, readers. Beauty matters.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
summer. Luxe Interiors + Design has been busy networking in the Pacific Northwest, as we’ve circulated amongst the design community and continued on the heels of successful past events. In May, Luxe celebrated Barkitecture, where teams of architects, builders, designers, landscape professionals and industry vendors created functional furniture that could also be used as pet houses. All ingenious, the finished projects were auctioned to raise money for the Seattle Humane Society. After the favorable feedback we received with our Battle of the Chefs events in Seattle, we’ve introduced the culinary competition to Portland. Local celebrity chefs led five teams of design professionals in a rock-and-roll Iron Chef-style match hosted in July at Standard TV & Appliance in Beaverton to raise money for the Center for Medically Fragile Children, a program of the Providence Child Center. We hope to see you out and about in the coming months for more design fun.

COASTAL CHIC Dynamic shapes and strong lines unite to present Foreside Home and Garden’s latest selection of outdoor furniture and accents. Originally established in the early 1990s by husband-and-wife team Claire and Mark Woodsum, the brand continues to evoke a charming coastal aesthetic by virtue of a mixed palette of materials and textures. Featured here, the recently introduced Market display table imbues a classic industrial style that functions as a unique addition to any outdoor setting. foresidehomeandgarden.com

Upon designing the outdoor living component of a classic shingle-style home along the picturesque coastline of Anacortes, architects Linda and Peter Stoner chose to create an experience that provides a seamless transition between the property’s interior and exterior spaces. Perched on a cliff about 200 feet above sea level, Linda says the team “wanted the pool terrace to capture the allure of the site—which is also exposed to inclement weather— and be comfortable for entertaining.” Using a resilient mix of hardscape materials including steel, mahogany and limestone, the Seattle-based team orchestrated a tony area that adapts to its setting while boasting captivating panoramas of the ocean below. stonerarchitects.com

For the renovation of a downtown Portland boutique lodge, landscape architects Jane Hansen and Kurt Lango garnered inspiration from the City of Roses’ indoor-outdoor culture. With a consummate emphasis on sustainability, the design duo created Hotel Modera’s featured courtyard as the property’s premier focal point, adorning its walls with lush plantings and creating several distinct garden environments. “This space provides guests with an urban oasis in which to gather and unwind,” notes Hansen, who outfitted the living wall with foliage native to the Pacific Northwest. “The overall effect is implicit of the integration of city and nature.” langohansen.com

Q+A ^ OLD
MEETS NEW
It’s safe to say that a property’s architectural and landscape designs should be reflective of one another. While this notion resonates with Sequim garden designer Sharon Nyenhuis, she also finds that a property’s existing foliage often plays a role. Therefore, when envisioning the redesign of the featured bloom-filled pathway, Nyenhuis chose to complement the site’s old growth conifers and 70-year-old rhododendrons with a vibrant palette of red thyme, lilies and primrose. “I wanted to evoke the beauty of a traditional flower garden,” she says. “It’s my own fusion of Northwest native and English design technique.” bentleygardendesign.com

Landscape designer Scot Eckley of Seattle’s Scot Eckley Inc, reflects on the importance of innovative design techniques and his first foray into landscape architecture.
Who inspires you and your work? Thomas Church, a Bay Area landscape architect who did his greatest work in the 1950s and ’60s. He was one of the earliest designers to bring Modernism to the field.
What was your first commission? I built a brick patio for my mom back in 1979 when I was just 10 years old. She started me early! Any recent projects? In addition to a multi-acre ranch in Idaho, I’m working on several residential outdoor living spaces in the Puget Sound. One common theme has been the inclusion of some wonderful swim spas and integrated hot tubs. What is your favorite material to work with? I recently completed a spa using a finish called Milestone, and I’m pretty excited about the range of colors it allows, as well as its many applications.

^ ARTISTIC APPROACH
^
When Vancouver-based landscape architect Paul Sangha designs the scheme for a home’s exterior setting, he aims to make the outdoor environs an extension of the interior spaces. Therefore, upon conceiving a plan for the featured garden, positioned atop a rolling hill that borders Pacific Spirit Regional Park, he adhered to an enduring emphasis on the site’s sloping topography and stayed within the structure’s neoclassical style. “By creating several distinct garden rooms, I was able to showcase the plantings, which express a painterly aesthetic,” notes Sangha, who implemented such vibrant foliage as annually planted tulips in a range of shades along with Japanese maples and beech trees. paulsangha.com
According to Portland landscape architect Steve Shapiro, the approach to designing an exterior living space should be heavily reflective of a property’s architectural aesthetic. For this Yamhill County residence, which sits in the center of a 125-acre vineyard overlooking the Oregon Coast Range of mountains, Shapiro chose to capture a Northwest aesthetic characterized by a warm palette of materials—which includes locally quarried boulders and Montana sandstone— and a bold mix of summer-blooming flora. Shapiro also incorporated a restorative water feature and fire pit, which he says “elevate the space’s connection to its natural surroundings.” shapirodidway.com

garden luxury This season, Michael Taylor Designs introduces Arcadia, a posh array of outdoor furnishings envisioned by designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman. Garnering inspiration from nature, Fisher and Weisman outfitted the featured lounge chair with organically shaped legs accented by hollyhock leaves. “The collection speaks to the garden setting it was designed to enhance,” notes Fisher, who adds that the generous scale and sumptuous cushioning were necessary in order to ensure an elevated level of comfort. michaeltaylordesigns.com

VERTICAL THINKING Debbie Kotalic visits Worth Avenue often. But, she’s not in Palm Beach to admire the fashion-centric vitrines. There’s a much more visually stimulating display that inspires passersby to stop, shoot a pic on their iPhone, and ponder the site of an 840-square-foot vertical garden. “It’s a very tight abstract that both counters and complements the avenue’s sprawling bougainvillea and breezy palm trees,” Kotalic says. “Everyone sees something different. It’s similar to when people look at the same cloud. What they envision isn’t necessarily the same.” A landscape designer for green wall specialists GSky Plant Systems, Kotalic is intimately familiar with every aspect of this wall. After all, she devised it, and even included a hidden optical illusion within its leafy façade. “I’ll give you a hint...it’s very Palm Beach,” teases Kotalic, who collaborated with the Garden Club of Palm Beach and landscape architecture firm Sanchez & Maddux. Behind its allure lies an intricate network of irrigation and maintenance systems that ensures the installation retains its wonder. As for the Rorschach-inspired camouflage, further gaze reveals (at least to us) a wind-bent palm tree, swaying fronds and all.

MAGNATE O F TA S T E THE VISIONARY PRESIDENT OF RALPH PUCCI INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSES THE INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF ART, THE BEAUTY FOUND IN IMPERFECTIONS AND THE NEXT BIG THING. WHEN I JOINED THE family mannequin business in 1976, all the other companies were doing very ladylike and elegant mannequins. So we sprayed ours out in high-gloss colors. We went where someone else wasn’t, and that became the design philosophy of Pucci from there on out. I LOOK FOR PIECES
that are unique, simple, timeless and, most importantly, that have soul. I don’t look for furniture that’s been mass-produced; I look for special pieces that have been touched by a great artisan and a creative mind. FINISHES ARE REALLY

For our Hervé Van der Straeten show in New York, we chose Billie Holiday and Count Basie. For Ruben Toledo in Los Angeles, we had a little fun and played early Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Music is the exclamation point to the mood we’re trying to create. I’VE BEEN WORKING with Vicente

Flecked with traditional notes, a healthy dose of eccentricity and classic British colonial cottages, the island’s charm inspires cool tones punctuated with vibrant color. Earthy home furnishings, white-washed finishes, nubby linens and rattan are right at home here. No wonder the design world is stealing its cues from this small Bahamian refuge. Fashion and interiors turn toward Beijing as this capital city dazzles with striking design. Shifting gears from traditional expectations—beloved chinoiserie, blue-andwhite porcelain and graceful lattice detailing—Beijing is setting a new tone where sleek lines reign supreme and regal undertones hark back to the Ming Dynasty. With thought-provoking architecture and Chinese culture as a muse, reimagined forms take shape, never compromising function for beauty, rather combining them seamlessly. Illustrating this notion is the Grace Beijing, a contemporary hotel in the much soughtafter 798 Art District, surrounded by world-class contemporary art galleries.

“I adore this chair. The curvaceous shape and simple upholstery is a winning combination. The twig-like, gilt-iron legs infuse it with an extra dose of panache. This is the kind of piece that would work just about anywhere, especially as an accent.” BRADLEY AGATHER | DALLAS, TX | THERIEN.COM
+ Upon designing the latest set of additions to Therien & Co.’s Studio Workshops collection—which includes this elegant yet slightly unexpected chair—Robert Garcia intended to evoke a relaxed contemporary vibe that challenges the wonted appearance of upholstery. When paired with the rich textural element of gilt-iron legs, the undulating lines of the seat, back and arms conjure a distinct visual lightness. PORTRAIT: MOLLY MILLER.

Inspired by the ancient Portuguese design technique of filigree—an intricate method for creating jewelry and accessories dating back to 3,000 BC—Koket’s mesmerizing fixture coils and bends in a sparkling cluster of spirals. As a fifth generation Oregonian, I am fascinated by the stately Pittock Mansion—a famous Portland landmark set in the hills of the Northwest. The eclectic architecture is intriguing and the Fortuny fabrics on the furnishings are breathtaking. I love escaping here for a hike or to just take in the views of the city and nearby mountains. pittockmansion.org

Opposite: The lobby of the NH Porta Rossa hotel in Florence is teeming with architectural and design interest. It’s no wonder Guenther is a frequent guest.
“We experience art as a mirror of ourselves and the life we know, or as a window to a place we don’t know,” muses Bruce Guenther. It’s a philosophy he keeps in mind while he tends to the Portland Art Museum’s 42,000-plus objects as chief curator and The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz curator of modern and contemporary art—posts he’s held for more than a decade. The

key to understanding any medium, he says, is to pay attention. Guenther therefore constantly filters to ensure PAM’s acquisitions have relevance and longevity. He certainly has a lot of practice with his approach; he’s in the midst of writing a book, and planning a corresponding exhibit, about PAM’s impressive 20th-century sculpture collection spanning from Rodin to video installation. Not surprisingly, his gift for curating can be translated on a personal level, as well—just stick to these rules: only buy what you love and don’t be afraid to ask for help. “Find your own voice,” he says. “Don’t live with other people’s stuff. Make it your stuff, your life, your history.” portlandartmuseum.org; 503.226.2811

BRUCE GUENTHER ARTIST TO WATCH:
Jaume Plensa. He’s such an exciting sculptor. He uses a lot of figures that are symbolic of the individual inside a collective identity. GREATEST INDULGENCE:
Ordering the tasting menu at Portland’s Castagna. Each course is strangely beautiful. When I partake in it, I give myself over to color and flavor, sort of like art but with food. DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS:
Susan Sontag, author and philosopher; Jean-François Revel, author of Without Marx or Jesus; Max Ernst, Surrealist painter and sculptor; Dominique de Menil, a patron of the arts; Rosalind Krauss, art historian; and John Berger, British author and art critic. FAVORITE HOTEL:
NH Porta Rossa in Florence for its location, impeccable service and topflight breakfasts, which keep us going in Italy’s museum swirl. DESCRIBE YOUR HOME.
It reflects the wide interests of its occupants and a life fully lived. My living room holds over 6,000 art books, a view of the terrace and a footstool covered in a needlepoint of a cubist Picasso à la Alice B. Toklas. LUXE INTERIORS

Textile designer Carley Kahn names the scarves in her collection after hikes she’s taken, and bases their patterns on her own photographs. Whether Ngawha Springs in New Zealand or Wahkeena Falls in her

hometown of Portland, Kahn is unabashed about nature’s influence on her life and work. “It’s such a cliché, but I really am inspired by nature and feel a responsibility to take care of the earth,” says Kahn, whose eco-friendly organic textiles are printed, sewn and cut domestically. Describing her designs as “organic with an edge,” Kahn’s upholstery fabrics begin with strict geometric motifs like chevrons or checkerboards, to which she introduces more abstract ideas like the pattern of rocks on a river bottom, and blends the two. “I’m like a scientist combining different techniques,” she says, noting her textiles have a very quiet palette. “Color is the hardest thing to come up with, so I tend to gravitate toward neutrals for the upholstery,” she says. It’s a formula that, despite its muted makeup, continues to yield dynamic results. carleykahn.com; 503.308.0288

CARLEY KAHN GREATEST INFLUENCE:
I spent a summer abroad in Copenhagen studying textile design, and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. CURRENT PROJECTS:
I’m working on my first jewelry collection, and am designing my spring 2014 line of scarves and pillows. I plan to introduce wallpaper soon, as well. FAVORITE SHOP:
Beam & Anchor carries an ever-evolving selection of home goods, jewelry, apothecary, custom furniture and ceramics with a focus on local makers. It’s my go-to spot for gift giving. SOMEONE TO WATCH:

Josef Frank’s pattern repeats often consist of smaller ones that economize the size of the printing block and hide the start and end of a motif. To lay out his designs this way, while keeping a seamless flow of his abstracted drawings, is absolute mastery to me. LUXE INTERIORS

Jon Almeda likes extremes. “I used to throw massive pieces,” says the ceramic artist. Until a little book called Creative Ceramic Miniatures downsized his approach. Ever since, the self-taught artist has created diminutive versions of full-size ceramic bowls and vases. “Throwing small allows me to focus on the shape and form of a piece. It’s very meditative,” he says. To date, Almeda’s smallest ceramic is a 1/4-inch-scale working teapot complete with

spout, handle and lid. While the creative process is the same, the tools of the trade sometimes differ—think bobby pins and razor blades. In addition to using raku, an ancient Japanese firing technique Almeda calls “pure magic,” he also makes crackle-glazed mini masterpieces. When not exhibiting at shows throughout the country, the Tacoma resident heads to Hawaii, where he spends three months a year. “I’m forever inspired by my surroundings,” he says, “from the dark waters and tall evergreens of the Pacific Northwest to the luscious flora and textures of the sea in Hawaii.” Sometimes it’s the little things in life that make the biggest impact. almedapottery.com; 808.282.8378

JON ALMEDA CURRENT PROJECT:
I’m using a combination of high-fired porcelain and black clay for my latest Reef series. The pieces are first thrown on the potter’s wheel, and then pierced, altered and textured on the outer surface to mimic the beauty of coral and lava rock. FAVORITE HOTEL:
Hawaii’s St. Regis Princeville Resort is such a pretty place to stay or have a sunset dinner. And for a getaway closer to home, I love the Alderbrook Resort & Spa on Hood Canal. GREATEST INFLUENCE:

oteworthy hotels and resorts typically bust through design convention, yielding interior and architectural declarations that push the boundaries beyond residential projects. Both
creatively looser and more experimental in nature, these hotel designs’ bold assertions are definitely something to write home about, especially when an A-list decorator is at the helm. At the Viceroy Anguilla, Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler employed unexpected contrasts of natural, neutral-hued elegance where rugged driftwood intermingles with finely honed stone; and white, black and gold interplay with the blue Caribbean waters. The resort’s Sunset Lounge, overlooking the bay, is brimming with a myriad of design nuggets. A mesmerizing Italian marble backsplash primed for sleek open shelving stands tall and bold behind a Carrara-topped island with warm wood chevron detailing. “Be fearless,” advises Wearstler. “Incorporate a bold use of texture in your home, in your kitchen, and mix different metals and materials.” As a stylish departure to the natural backdrop, sumptuous gold (a staple of the designer’s) and shagreen-upholstered barstools offer a fashionable perch to survey the culinary action. “The raw material has so much spirit and natural beauty,” notes Wearstler. “It’s Mother Nature in her finest form. It’s architectural art.”

painted glass. “When I design a hotel, I look to create a mood specific to that property,” says Rottet. “I felt in this particular location that keeping with the 1940s and ’50s inspiration was appropriate.” Naples, Florida-based designer Jett Thompson also approached the Scarp Ridge Lodge’s décor, particularly that the kitchen, with an aesthetic in line with the boutique hotel’s Crested Butte, Colorado, locale. A take on the all-white kitchen, Thompson warmed up the potentially stark palette by working with blonde woods and almond-hued cabinetry and accents.

from a holiday to exotic Bali. With enticing beaches, sprawling cliffs, emerald rice fields, and active volcanic peaks, this ecological wonder may possess alluring topography, but it’s the
spirited approach to design that’s captured our attention. Encouraged by the lush equatorial gardens on the grounds of luxury resort Karma Jimbaran, Grounds Kent Architects embraced the untamed environment when creating this serene soaking retreat. Cast out of a unique blend of terrazzo, marble and
sandstone, the organically shaped bath echoes the design sensibility consistent throughout the property. “The villas are built to follow the design of a traditional courtyard found in a Bali village,” explains Martin Grounds, lead architect on the project. A wide stone path dotted with river rocks connects to the freestanding, open-air tub, overhung with palms and frangipanis, while the imposing stonewall anchors the retreat giving way to the natural plant inhabitants. The awardwinning Australian firm found inspiration amidst the lush tropical landscape and peacefully nestled this stunning display of classic Balinese architecture. “There is something truly luxurious about an outdoor bath in the sweet Bali air.”

Owner Izak Senbahar, who worked closely with Grange, wanted the hotel to exhibit “French luxury with Swiss precision.” Saturated with artistic expression, the übersophisticated vanity fitted with sleek Lefroy Brooks nickel finishes is a modern complement to the classically striped Belgian black and Thassos white marble floors. And that pastel mint complexion? It was added to “bring a translucent element into the mix,” says Senbahar. “It was necessary to include this eye-catching color detail to draw you in even further.”

hen an empty-nester couple decided to move from their single-family home to a penthouse condo in the Uptown neighborhood of Portland, where stately Victorian houses give way to
hip restaurants and boutiques, the process of making a new home was only the beginning. A panoramic 14th-floor view through floor-to-ceiling glass dazzled, but its finishes and architectural details fell flat. With the help of trusted designer-turned-friend Kim Hagstette, the opportunity emerged to reinvent the space, engaging a spectrum of artisans and artists along the way. “The thought was, if we’re going to do this, I’d like to really do it thoughtfully and with a more modern design in mind,” the homeowner recalls. “It’s a complete departure from our previous home or any place that we’ve ever lived.”

With its contrasting light and dark tones, surfaces both textural and smooth, and the creation of intimate and expansive spaces, the home feels at once energetically urban and like a tranquil escape. “We can spot people walking their dogs and pushing their strollers, and also the traffic on the Fremont Bridge. On a clear day, we can see five mountains and the waterfront of the Willamette River,” the wife says. “And the light—you can see it changing, if not daily, hourly.” Hagstette wanted to capitalize on those views and create an elegant and sophisticated but soft, modern feel. “We put an emphasis on layering textures and contrasting sheens,” she says. “You’re not slammed with haphazard color everywhere,” but rather carefully curated hues that are splashed throughout the penthouse via the art and textiles. 188 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Indeed, whether it’s the textured ceramic tile backsplash in the kitchen, a beaded glass wallcovering in the entry, a surface of undulating twisted felt in the media room, or a metallic silk wallcovering in the master bedroom, the design offers not just changing textures but also what Hagstette calls a “shimmering” effect: be they shiny or muted, objects that attract light and bounce it around the room. “Every surface in the home was touched,” the designer explains, “and as a result, the unit became chameleon-like. It just changes continuously. The owners are getting a different experience at any given time of day.” Before move-in, the ceiling and various walls were stripped down to the studs to allow for more sophisticated HVAC, lighting and media systems, operated via in-house control monitors and smartphone; a redesigned fireplace wall in the living room; and new sapele mahogany doors and cabinetry. “Just going from a 6-foot-8-inch door to a 7-foot-6-inch sapele mahogany one visually made the place,” says building consultant Glenn Miller, who oversaw the construction changes to the unit. “The living room fireplace was difficult to engineer—it required a fresh-air intake, which gives the fireplace great temperature control—but I think that, along with the fully programmable lighting system, transformed the condo. You can really dial in the mood.” A three-dimensional metal installation above that fireplace serves as evidence that both designer and client made a point of personally seeking out artists and artisans for the home’s décor and visuals, as if getting to

know them imbued each piece with a story. The home includes artworks by several area painters and sculptors, but the craftsmen were given equal attention; their work is showcased, for instance, in the fabrics for the twisted felt and wood media wall and in the solid walnut-slab dining table. Hagstette sprinkled in international and classic midcentury modern furniture, and though she enjoyed introducing her clients to a world of modernity, there’s still a feeling of inviting warmth that can’t be denied. As the homeowner puts it, “It’s easy to kind of cocoon in there. You feel like you’re wrapped in a warm cozy blanket. But then the other side of us likes to entertain, and the apartment can accommodate large groups—our largest so far has been about 80. I want people to walk into our home and feel comfortable, but also to feel the joy and the energy. It really is a joyful place.” L

hen a couple hires their daughter to design their residence, they get the kind of personalized interiors only a family member can deliver. Jane and Rob Freres’ sprawling home in Turner,
Oregon, intentionally has only one bedroom and includes premeasured storage for everything from his sunglasses to her handbag collection. “This house was laid out and conceived for just the two of us,” says Jane, a retired designer herself, who assembled a team that included her daughter, Holly Freres, to attend to every nuance. For some industry professionals, the thought of working on their parents’ home might be daunting, but Holly was up to the task. “I wanted to make sure everything was totally customized to the way they live,” says Holly, who went so far as to count their sets of keys before designing a chest for stowing them. “I grew up watching my mother create classic interiors and also worked with her, so I had the advantage of already knowing her likes and dislikes.”

Landscape architect Craig Kiest also had an inside track. He had worked with the Frereses on a previous project, and this time he expanded his role to come up with the architectural design of Jane and Rob’s new home in addition to the landscape. Working closely with the owners, he developed an indoor-outdoor layout offering vantage points of the surrounding farmland and mountains, and a courtyard with formal gardens and outdoor rooms shaded by crepe myrtle trees. “Everything about the home is based on clean lines, so I created a low-profile parterre that extends the crispness of the architecture,” says Kiest. With a plan established, residential designer Steven Pollard stepped in to tackle permits and offer technical support. Inside, Kiest also dreamed up interior architectural aspects in conjunction with the materials and finishes selected by Holly and Jane: think flush doors and baseboards, and even the exact dimensions for his-and-her closets and having the climate-control thermostats recessed so they didn’t interrupt the flow of the walls. “We treated the whole house like it was a Mercedes,” he says.

But Ferrari might be more fitting as the homeowners quickly settled on an Italian theme. “We honeymooned at the Villa San Michele, a 15th-century monastery in Fiesole, and fell in love with it. But with our damp climate, there aren’t many stucco houses in Oregon,” says Jane, noting she found a fourth-generation plasterer from Ireland to save the day with a layering process that prevents water damage. Builder Tom Wheeler oversaw the demanding stucco and plaster work and attests to the high level of craftsmanship. “In order for the stucco to look as authentic as possible and fade with time, it was made with old-world concrete rather than an acrylic latex finish,” he says. “And the plaster walls are perfectly smooth throughout the house.” 202 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

According to Holly, the color selections for the interior and exterior walls reflect her parents’ different tastes and personalities. “He loves color, so the bright yellow stucco is totally Dad,” she says. “Inside, all the walls are Maritime white—classic like Mom, and the perfect backdrop for their extensive art collection.” In the living room, the linen sofa topped with hand-painted silk pillows and the looped wool carpet speak to her mother’s aesthetic, while the high-gloss Art Deco cabinet was selected by both of them. But Kiest says when it came to the master bedroom, Rob had the final word. “I still remember when he told me, ‘I don’t want any light in my bedroom, not even in a window,’ ” says Kiest, who notes the master suite is positioned on the north side of the house. Decorating the windowless room was

a challenge that was quickly met. “It was just a plain square space, so we added a corner fireplace to create an interior view,” says Holly; she plowed through books on Italian architecture to find the perfect fluted design. “Then we hung substantial art and selected furnishings to cozy things up, and even without windows it’s very luxurious.” For her efforts, the offspring Freres earned both high praise and gratitude from her parent and former colleague. “I wanted everything to be clean and simple with soft colors and lines,” says Jane. “Holly knows us so well, so she had no trouble getting it right.” L

ou could say designer Gregory Carmichael got in on the ground level of a significant project involving a northern Idaho home. “It was just an enormous hole in the ground,” he says with a laugh. “Excavation had just begun, along
with some foundation work. Getting involved so early gave us lots of time up front to get detailing nailed down.” Situated along 500 feet of lakefront, the home’s building site largely inspired the architectural concept. “It was striking and serene,” architect Kris Contor says. “The natural topography undulated. There were rock outcroppings covered in moss and an umbrella of conifer trees. We wanted the house to nestle into that setting.” But first, they had to get there. “It was a 10-acre site with lots of rock,” builder Dan McMahon says. “We put in a quarter-mile-long drive leading down to the home on the lake. It was pretty intense.” Excavation took six months.

Simply put, the residence was designed on a larger-than-life scale. Timber framed with coastal fir, the plan stretches out parallel to the shore in a horizontal fashion. Ceilings soar as high as 28 feet, and expanses of floor-to-ceiling windows field-stopped into the frame ensure that lake views are uninterrupted. Large, vertical masses of dry-stacked slate counter the abundance of wood. “The owners are from Houston; they summer here with their sons and entertain a lot,” Contor says. “He was a fan of large volumes and wanted everything a little bigger. There’s a lot of mass, but the view from the outside is in proportion.” Not surprisingly, Carmichael’s task was a challenge, starting with the handling of the interior wood. “In addition to the fir frame, the floors and all the interior doors and cabinets are walnut, and the ceiling is cedar,” he explains. “It’s all stained versus natural. We wanted the building to have some age and maturity, and you can only achieve that by giving the wood a little bit of a richer presence.” 212 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Beyond the monumental entry, which the designer calls the home’s grandest exterior moment, a series of living areas informs the main floor, in addition to the master suite. Furnishing those rooms proved to be tricky, however. “The temptation was to make things high-backed because of the immense scale,” he says. “Instead, I took the opposite approach. I gave the furniture a more human scale, so when you’re interacting with the space, you feel grounded and not adrift.” Input from the owners is reflected in interior details, as well. “We travel often and wished to have a hint of an Asian feel in the house,” says the wife. “We wanted it to be contemporary but also have a timeless feel, like it grew up organically and belonged to the area. We knew that Gregory’s Seattle connections would help us achieve that.” The 14-foot-long dining table is the perfect example. “I didn’t want a massive wood table in a house that’s all wood,” Carmichael says. “I wanted to offer contrast.” Created by Seattle glass artist Peter David, the tabletop consists of three undulating fused glass sections with little bubbles that give it a watery feel and connect it to the lake, while Asian-inspired modern steel and glass lanterns appear to float above it.

In a change of pace, the master suite at the far end of the house is one area in which the predominant color palette is lightened and materials softened. The high-ceilinged space has both a sense of privacy and a direct connection to the outdoors. After three years of construction, cutting and installing 28-foot-long rafters and laying tons of stone pavers inside and out, McMahon gives kudos to both architect and designer for their drawings and attention to detail. “They made my job easy,” he says, noting the home’s unusual scale and finishes. “The design looks pretty impressive on the lake.” L LUXE INTERIORS

his project has been a labor of love,” says the owner of a contemporary home on a wooded lot overlooking a lush, green golf course in Medina. The owners relocated from Louisville to the Pacific Northwest, trading their
traditional southern home for a 1965 rambler with loads of potential. Inspired by a visit to their relative’s contemporary retreat on Martha’s Vineyard, the owners desired a similarly modern aesthetic for their new home, and they were happy to discover that the architect, Brett Baba, was based in Seattle. “It was meant to be,” the wife says. When Baba first toured the house, it had dated interior finishes, gable dormers that didn’t jive with his and the owners’ vision, and a sunroom that had been added in an earlier renovation that could be altered to function better for the new family. With the help of the owners, interior designer Holly McKinley, and builders Frank Fabens, Les McAuliffe and Matthew King, Baba carried out a three-part renovation that triumphed over all of these factors and more.

Initially, Baba focused on making the interior more livable. To make the 8-foot ceilings seem higher, he removed the headers and raised the door heights throughout the home. In the master bedroom, he took the opposite approach, cladding the ceiling with stained tongue-in-groove wood to create a sense of coziness. “The master bedroom was too voluminous,” the architect remembers. “Not only do you step down to enter the room, but the volume of the ceiling also pops up. It was a little too dramatic.” Large-scale furnishings, such as a platform for the bed, also reduce the room’s massive scale, says McKinley, who worked with the architect on the home’s built-in cabinetry and fireplace surrounds. 222 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

In the living room, interior designer Holly McKinley recovered the owners’ Charles Pollock chairs with blue taffeta by Donghia, and their sofas in Donghia fabric from Susan Mills Showroom. Above the custom hearth hangs an abstract painting by artist Dan Christensen from Schulte Fine Art in South Orange, New Jersey. McKinley custom designed the rug.
Cedar beams and custom Marlin windows were used to build the new sunroom, which was designed by architect Brett Baba and built by Matthew King. Inside, McKinley paired the owners’ Raleigh armchairs from Design Within Reach with fumedoak-and-metal tables from Gulassa & Co. The basalt tile floor from Statements extends out to the patio.

“The lines start to blur when Holly and I work together, which is what makes it a great collaboration,” Baba says. McKinley set the tone for the interiors in the first phase of the remodel by selecting a neutral color palette and designing many of the furnishings herself. “We used beautiful reclaimed woods for the custom coffee table and the console behind the sofa in the family room,” McKinley says. “The lines of the furniture are clean and very complementary of the architecture. The bones of the house really called for that.” The custom furnishings and carefully chosen materials can be found throughout the home. “Everything is detail-oriented and cohesive,” the wife says, pointing to the stairway leading from the entry to the living room, which Baba redesigned along with the stairway stepping into the family room from the kitchen. Baba also used concrete as a countertop surface in the family room, for which he and McKinley created a wall of built-in cabinetry with a bronze-patinated blackened-steel fireplace. “People use blackened steel all the time. It’s the design and placement of it that’s really exciting and wonderful in this project,” says Fabens— who helmed construction during the first phase of the renovation with LUXE INTERIORS

In later renovation phases, Baba worked with King to completely redesign the formerly enclosed kitchen, opening it to the step-down family room and installing cabinets with a rift-sawn oak veneer. King also implemented Baba’s plans for the exterior, which included installing shiplap siding, replacing the gables to flatten the roof and rebuilding the sunroom with a new foundation, radiant floor heating and a glass roof in place of the original skylights. “We gave it a much sleeker look,” King says. “Brett has a great eye for integrating steel and wood surfaces. The transformation is amazing.” And landscape architect Randy Allworth, of Allworth Design, conceived of an entry sequence and plantings for the front of the house that complement the modern scheme of the updated exterior. Although the project took several phases to complete, the owner says that the results are seamless. “Matthew and his team did a wonderful job allowing us to live in the space comfortably while all this work was happening,” the wife explains. “We have concrete and metal, but we also have a lot of wood and warmth. It’s a contemporary house, but the scale keeps it grounded and very organic.” L LUXE INTERIORS

A LAID-BACK CALIFORNIA DESIGNER GIVES A LESSON ON DECORATING WITH A VIBRANT YELLOW PALETTE IN MIND. HINT: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE NEUTRAL PAIRINGS.

GREEN ROOM
PROVING THAT A GORGEOUS GREEN WORKS WITH ANY AESTHETIC, THIS DESIGN DUO SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SHADES FROM AVOCADO TO OLIVE.
COLOR TRAITS When Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks of Atelier Interior Design were challenged with infusing color and glamour into a traditional home, they accepted with gusto. The homeowner attributed her love of color to a childhood spent in India and was looking for a way to liven up her study. To do so, Schroder and Rundiks used a fabric shade and lacquered kelly green shelving unit to pop against neutral furnishings and graphic wallpaper. “That particular green works

You’ve never cooked steak like this before.
This is a true Japanese “A5” 100% Wagyu Beef Zabaton steak. It was flown in fresh from the Kagoshima Prefecture in Southwest Japan so that you can take it home and create a meal you’ll never forget. John Howie lets you choose from a variety of restaurant-quality steaks, from USDA prime to the world’s best, Japanese Wagyu. They say the flavor comes from the marbeling of a steak. Judging by this photo, you are in for quite a treat. And don’t be nervous. We’ll include directions so you can get it just right.

luxe barkitecture. A design competition between top tier Seattle architects, builders, designers and landscape professionals. Eight talented teams created one-of-a-kind pet crates that transition into functional home furniture along with artistically appointed container gardens. These masterful works and labors of love were auctioned to raise funds for the Seattle Humane Society. A vintageinspired dog fashion show kicked off the evening and was followed by a sit-down gourmet dinner.
