Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

EDITOR’S LETTER
ARTS & DECORATION
W
hile recently browsing an antique shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina, I picked up an issue of Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March 1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs and retro appeal, I took it home to study its content. What insightful words of design wisdom I discovered in its pages. A few to take note of, and for us design devotees to keep in mind...
On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be made with imagination as well as knowledge. There must seem leisure in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in looking lived in, by dreams at least.” On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them. Therefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.” On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more permanently and more beautifully, they will be regarded less as real estate and more as homes, and with that change in attitude, the status of the home as the nucleus of society will approach more closely the older American tradition.”

Furnishings don’t make a home. Life does. And life isn’t something that comes from a store. Design is the way you present your lifestyle to the world. And that’s when the right furnishings make all the difference.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
fall. Welcome to the fall issue of Luxe Interiors + Design. We’ve had an exciting summer of networking events that have helped us prepare for the upcoming season. After positive feedback in Seattle, we launched our first Battle of the Chefs Portland in July at Standard TV & Appliance in Beaverton. Industry professionals competed in a onehour culinary competition making an appetizer and dessert from two secret ingredients announced just before the event. Local top chefs anchored each team: Cathy Whims of Nostrana and Oven and Shaker; Adam Higgs from Acadia; Alex Parsons of El Gaucho; Scott Dolich from The Bent Brick and Park Kitchen; and Chris Carriker, executive freelance chef. All were amazing and we can’t thank you enough for your contributions and sense of humor. In September, we joined Masins Fine Furnishings & Interior Design to welcome Barbara Barry as she previewed selections of her furniture, fabric, accessory and lighting collections, and signed copies of her book, Around Beauty. And in October, we will host an invitation-only Luxe pumpkin-carving contest at Sizzleworks Cooking School in Bellevue to celebrate the spirit of the season. Looking forward to seeing you out and about in the coming months.

Our Quiet and Clean Guarantee means we‘re confident that not only will it be the quietest dishwasher you‘ve ever owned, but it will also give you the best cleaning results. While some brands claim they‘re the quietest, their sound levels doubled when testing was done with dirty dishes. Only Miele‘s sound levels remained unchanged whether running a clean or dirty load of dishes. That‘s indisputable proof we call SoundTruth™.

Shu Hung says she likes to think of Table of Contents as a semi-annual publication, as each “issue” of new furnishings, fixtures, apparel and accessories comes together around a central theme. Along with Joseph Magliaro, Hung helms the Portland design atelier, which is situated in the city’s vibrant Chinatown neighborhood. “Our ardent focus is on cultivating a pool of offerings that are not carried anywhere else,” says Hung. “We truly revel in showcasing the work of talent that is slightly under the radar.” The latest decorative sculptures from designer Jason Rens are currently on display, as well as chic side table—featuring a striking combination of Oregon walnut and powder-coated steel—produced exclusively by the studio. tableofcontents.us

Created from a series of interconnected geometric shapes with metallic-finished cores, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler’s Welles light fixture is a welcome addition to the brothers’ exclusive line of furnishings. Since launching their namesake collection, Gabriel Scott, last year, the architects-turned-designers’ chic set has rapidly expanded—with plans to introduce a similar piece in the form of a sconce—and there are no signs of slowing down. “Our intention was to offer a flexible lighting system that gives decorators a maximum amount of possibilities,” notes Richler. gabriel-scott.com

FAST FORWARD Just four years after launching her interior design firm Vanillawood, Kricken Yaker’s home office was bursting at the seams and a dedicated locale was inevitable. What began as a working studio quickly transitioned into a full-scale retail shop, where Yaker now stocks a stylish selection of design elements ranging from reimagined vintage furnishings to chic brass objets and custom cabinetry. Offering a distinctive product mix, the space is host to organic furnishings such as a custom live-edge walnut dining table, as well as the latest offerings from brands the likes of Bernhardt— whose Brielle cocktail table is below—and Schumacher. “Our overarching aesthetic is light, bright and inviting,” Yaker says, “which is a style our clients are really responding to.” vanillawood.com

According to Portland-based furniture designer Ben Klebba, honoring the wild beauty and richness of materials guides his creative vision. “I want Phloem Studio pieces to stand the test of time,” says Klebba, who is currently working on two new designs for his Arris line, from which several pieces are shown below. In addition to his existing work, Klebba also fabricates custom pieces on a made-to-order basis. “The overarching goal is to create enduring contemporary furniture for future generations.” phloemstudio.com
For Rebecca Lurie and Brian Robins, a penchant for traveling the globe in search of diverse home décor—and a mutual fixation with floor coverings— led the design duo to introduce Kush Handmade Rugs to Portland in the fall of 2006. “We found that the options for achieving our vision were abundant,” says Lurie, who scours markets from Europe to South Asia to curate the company’s collection. The tony showroom also offers a luxurious line of private label designs. This season, Lurie says she is most looking forward to introducing a set of exclusive abstract designs as well as an arresting assemblage of artisancrafted rugs that she discovered during a recent trip to Nepal. kushrugs.com
Q+A
Luxe sits down with furniture designer Ben Klebba, the creative vision behind Phloem Studio, to discuss his current inspirations.
What inspired you to begin a career in design? I grew up in a house that my father built, so woodworking was always around me. I previously lived in Chicago, where I apprenticed with a luthier constructing acoustic guitars, and then with a fine furniture builder; at that point, I knew that designing furniture was my passion. Tell us about your daily influences. My relationships with friends and family. Over and over and over. Any colors, patterns or textures that resonate most with you? Lately, I’ve been drawn to rift-sawn white oak; when cut from the tree, the grain remains very linear. Plus oak is so resilient yet porous and textured. Overall, I’m a huge fan of patterns and repetition. Who are some of your design icons? George Nakashima was a genius designer and craftsman, known for the impactful nature of his live-edge pieces. Hans Wegner was also amazing; he designed over 100 chairs and so many of them are absolutely stunning.

The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. Part of the new line is the Chinchero bench, shown, enveloped in Jordan’s olive-hued Prima Alpaca fabric—a luxurious fiber that was historically implemented by Incan royalty and evokes the ancient heritage of the Andean culture. According to Ho, the bench, which is bestowed with a framework of robust steel, “reflects the magical essence of the royal estate built with eternity in mind.” jiunhodejia.com 088 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Sophisticated silhouettes and exquisite design details make up the latest assemblage of interior furnishings and accessories available at Ebanista’s Seattle Design Center locale. Founders Fari and Melinda Pakzad designed the 70-piece collection—which includes such elegant pieces as a rock-crystal chandelier and a sumptuous settee—in honor of the Costa Mesa, California-based company’s 10th anniversary. The charming set also features a selection of decorative lighting, ornate handcarved accents, paintings and elegant case goods, which the Pakzads say “celebrate luxury and sophistication with ease.” ebanista.com
Anchored by European design authorities De La Espada, Giorgetti and Minotti, Inform Interiors’ South Lake Union space houses an abundance of chic collections displayed in an inspiring assemblage of vignette settings. The featured Lane console—an iconic piece from Minotti’s collaboration with Milan-based designer Rodolfo Dordoni—reveals the innovative nature of the products this showroom offers. Also host to a bevy of arresting accents, including an eclectic set of lighting and rugs, Inform Interiors is undoubtedly one of Seattle’s design gems.. informseattle.com

COLOR CORRECTED Italian design house Poltrona Frau recently unveiled 11 new sumptuously appointed furniture lines, all of which were inspired by the rich history of luxury automobile and aviation models. Roberto Lazzeroni’s Montera chair is a two-tone design—shown here in camel and turquoise leathers—set atop a rich wengestained ash wood base. Available in a vibrant amalgam of colorways, Montera embodies a sophisticated silhouette, which Lazzeroni achieved via an ardent focus on lightness of form. poltronafrau.com

TABLE TALK Entertaining is the perfect occasion to tell a visual story, and with the table as protagonist, every piece that graces it also plays a supporting role. “I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting combinations.” The designer chose Anna Weatherley’s goldrimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both, and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. Alongside the fireplace, they make an inviting space even cozier in time for a fabulous fall get together. Placemats, Bagatelle in Violine; manuelcanovas.com. FERNAND LÉGER’S ENDURING ART PIECE DEPICTING ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN LIFE INSPIRES AN EXHIBITION ON THE MODERN METROPOLIS.
S
o many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity. Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets
of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the exhibition was inspired by The City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar to us today. Of course, cities have changed since then, but there is also something profoundly enduring about Léger’s vision.” philamuseum.org

FIVE MINUTES WITH...
BON VIVANT
WITH A NEW BOOK CHRONICLING THE RESTORATION OF HIS FRENCH CHÂTEAU AND AN UPCOMING TABLEWARE LINE FOR ROYAL LIMOGES, L.A. DESIGNER TIM CORRIGAN STILL FINDS TIME FOR A LITTLE JOIE DE VIVRE.
IN YOUR NEW BOOK, AN INVITATION TO CHÂTEAU DU GRAND-LUCÉ... Many people think
that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.
YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN:
WHEN ENTERTAINING GUESTS…
None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”
It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.
ARCHITECTURAL WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A PAINSTAKING RESTORATION?
I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today. FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…
Was a real labor of love and I used an approach that I would advise anyone to: Buy what you love and it will somehow find its proper place. Clockwise from top: Corrigan’s French estate; Macassar Ebony & Ostrich Egg lamp by TC Home; a seating area of the master bedroom featured in An Invitation to Château du Grand-Lucé; an antique brass fire screen; the designer in his Loire Valley home.
MOST FAVORED
CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE: For
me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.
PERIOD: Mid-tolate 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment. PAINT A PICTURE CTURE OF TIME SPENT AT YOUR PICTURESQUE CTURESQUE CHÂTEAU: It’s like going back
in time to when life was all much slower and people really had the time to be with each other. I can think of no other place in the world I would rather be when I am afforded the luxury of time.

When designer Cédric Ragot conceives an interior accent, such as this ombré rug he created for French atelier Roche Bobois, he perpetually aims to conjure a link between the functional and the conceptual. “Ponyo was actually one of my first forays into the art of rug design,” says Ragot, adding that he “endeavored to invite a harmonious blend of tones, which in turn, serve to warm up a room.” Featured here in a raspberry-centric scheme, the artfully devised floorcovering is handwoven from sumptuous New Zealand wool.

This season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant for Art Deco architecture. The result is this hourglass stool, which marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used in multiples,” says Bunting. “The juxtaposition of the warm and tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”
“This stool’s concentric circles remind us of an age-old tree trunk. Overall, we adore the clean look, especially after a recent trip to Japan where home décor is pared down and streamlined.”

+ To create the Sorenthia light fixture, Rhode Island-based designer Asher Dunn turned to the marvels of the ocean to find his muse. “I was intrigued by the crystalline nature of sea kelp when seen below the surface of water,” says Dunn, who took a cue from the arresting quality of light shining through the plant. Merging this organic component—by virtue of adjustable arms—with an industrial blend of steel and brass, Dunn introduces a luminous product destined to shine.

In the early 1950s, celebrated Italian architect and furniture visionary Gio Ponti experimented with several models of this exquisite case good. Designated with the simple moniker Chest of Drawers, the time-honored design far exceeds its humble name. Bestowed with a robust elmwood body and an ivory-finished front, the midcenturystyle piece is accented with handles in elm, Italian walnut, mahogany and rosewood, all resting on lustrous brass feet.
What may appear to be a straightforward yet luxuriously appointed chair swathed in a graphite-hued velvet is anything but basic. This plush beauty, a piece from the newly launched Luxury in Motion collection by Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, is also a fully functioning recliner, silently extending at the push of a concealed upholstered button. “The graceful contours of this chair’s frame lend a sartorial element,” says creative director Phillip Jeffries. The jewelry-like Greek key motif at its base is the finishing touch to this well-tailored piece.
“While linear in form, this chair sits in motion. Timeless yet bold, I definitely can envision it in the bedroom of my Milan apartment. The Greek key detailing is an added bonus.”

Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama relishes in sharing the knowledge he gleaned from his brother, father and grandfather while growing up in Japan. Opposite: The raked sand-stone path of the Portland Japanese Garden’s Flat Garden symbolizes a river.
As Garden Curator of the Portland Japanese Garden, Sadafumi Uchiyama hasn’t strayed from his roots. “In Japan, you do what you’re brought up to do,” he says. But Uchiyama did rebel, moving from Japan and eventually landing in Chicago, where he received his masters in landscape architecture from the

University of Illinois. This East/West perspective made Uchiyama a natural as the first curator in the Garden’s history. While his staff maintains the 5.5 acres, Uchiyama digs into the past and, more importantly, what lies ahead. “I represent the Garden in a philosophical way and set the tone for the future,” he says. Designed in 1963 by landscape architect Takuma Tono, the site took 20 years to construct. Uchiyama continues Tono’s vision today, “but not blindly,” he says. “The importance is not what’s planted but how one species takes on many forms.” Such as an 80-foot tree next to a 4.5-foot hedge—both hemlocks. Of the five featured areas, Uchiyama’s favorite remains the Natural Garden. “It looks more like a forest and less like a garden, so I feel like I’m getting away,” he says. But never very far. japanesegarden.com; 503.223.1321
VISION KEEPER
SADAFUMI UCHIYAMA TO CELEBRATE THE GARDEN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY…
I am working with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma on the Cultural Crossing project, with plans to double the size of the Garden and incorporate the International Institute of Garden Arts and Culture. We just finished the schematic design and are moving into design development for the next 50 years and beyond. GREATEST INFLUENCES:
My mentor is Robert Riley, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois. The most eye-opening essay I’ve read was The Beholding Eye: Ten Versions of the Same Scene, by Donald W. Meinig. FAVORITE GARDENING SOURCE:
Smith Rock in Portland. It’s the rock supplier I most frequent and where I meet many stone sculptors and masons. DESCRIBE THE GARDEN.
It’s a piece of art so to speak, but we see it as a place to do something meaningful, a place of interaction. It’s a healing garden— there are always people doing meditation, yoga and photography. Ultimately, it’s a way to reconnect with nature. LUXE INTERIORS

It’s unlikely Michael Pratt and Reta Larson knew they were at the forefront of an American tile revival movement when they started Pratt and Larson Tile with one kiln in the basement of their former Southeast Portland home 30 years ago. What they did see was an opportunity to combine his background in ceramics with her knowledge of textiles. “We realized quickly that
Shown here are samples from two new tile collections by Pratt and Larson Tile— Scraffito (yellow), designed by Pratt in honor of the company’s 30th anniversary, and Filigree (green).
our different mediums were compatible when applied to handcrafted tile design. The pattern and rhythm of textile and the understanding of ceramics blended well,” says Larson, who claims a trip to Mexico and exposure to that country’s richly decorative tilework provided their initial inspiration. Today, their Portland production/retail site boasts 45 kilns and 84 employees, and their tiles are carried in over 100 showrooms nationwide and in Canada. Pratt still conceives most of the designs that run the gamut from traditional to modern, and despite advances in automation, the couple has never swayed from the firm’s artisanal philosophy. “We want the touch of the craftsman to show through the work,” he says. prattandlarson.com; 503.231.9464
BREAKING MOLDS
MICHAEL PRATT & RETA LARSON CURRENT PROJECT:
MP: We’ve just launched Scraffito, where the pattern is incised, rather than raised as in bas relief. And we’re finishing a new line called Filigree; it’s very detailed and precisely ornate. We’ve also started on a collection of ceramic sconces. FAVORITE HOTEL:
RL: Las Mañanitas Hotel Garden Restaurant & Spa in Cuernavaca, Mexico. It’s a small, world-class hotel with a friendly staff and a tremendous garden that has peacocks roaming the grounds. DESIGN PERIOD I FIND MOST ENGAGING:
RL: Lately, we have been rediscovering Portland residential architecture from the turn of the century: The Kamm House, the Pittock Mansion. There is a Facebook page called Dead Memories Portland that shows historical photos. It’s endlessly interesting. MY SECRET WORK TIP…
MP: Work every day. No matter if it’s a small thing— a sketch of an idea. Starting is always the hardest action. And then don’t stop. You only get good at what you do through continual work and review. LUXE INTERIORS

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Jack Kearney, Company K founder and lead designer, is a modern-day Renaissance man made of equal parts industrial craftsman, sculptor, sketch artist, builder and junkyard connoisseur. “There are lots of fabrication shops out there that make pieces for designers and lots of designers who use fabricators, but we are both,” he explains. While living in New York working as a residential designer, he noticed that there was a disconnect in the creative process and decided to open up shop in Seattle. “I wanted
Kearney designed and built the Reed chair using woven split-reed fibers along a steel frame; a hinged detail allows the frame to rock.
to close the loop and be able to design and build under one roof,” he remembers. Whether he and his team of artisans are cladding custom walnut cabinets in 1/4-inch-thick belting leather, transforming a gritty steel plate pulled from a salvage yard earlier in the week into a dining table, or meticulously machining a piece of hardware for a custom pivot door, his approach remains the same. “My work is simple, but simple is a four-letter word,” he says. “To achieve something that’s very simple is very hard because it’s pure craftsmanship.” companyk.com; 206.632.0509
CRAFT MASTER
JACK KEARNEY DESIGN ICON:
Carlo Scarpa. The craftspeople he used and what he accomplished in the era when he worked was unbelievable. And Constantin Brancusi—the way he assembled things in the time frame he did astounds me. BEST SALVAGE FIND:
I once found a beautiful steel plate that had been lying in the dirt for over 40 years. Trucks were literally driving over it every day so the patina was amazing. I turned it into a table. FAVORITE SHOP:
De Vera in New York. The owner has a crazy eye and finds the wackiest objects that are still so precious—everything from a great Japanese teapot to handmade jewelry and religious iconography. DESIGN PERIOD YOU FIND MOST ENGAGING:
I tend to be inspired less by periods and more by culture: Japanese, Italian and Scandinavian. Stylistically they’re different, but really they’re all the same in the sense that from packaging to the architecture, everyone there appreciates good design. LUXE INTERIORS

etting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively, the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting
aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery, for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains. Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light while retaining a sense of genuineness. “This kitchen adds an instant feeling of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”
“
We were lucky to find the elements needed to achieve the style we had in mind all along of European elegance with an artistic bohemian flair. TESSA NELEMAN-PIMONTEL, ECHO AND MERCER

DISPLAY TYPE Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “The idea of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan earthenware in the mix. The key is to make sure that whatever is visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction, everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

hen a designer approaches a master bathroom suite with two specific inspirations in mind—the Ritz Paris (pre-renovation) and Carrie Bradshaw’s closet from the original

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley says. The resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally, the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,” Stanley says. “This typically calls for a seating area.” The designer brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions, while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek custom cabinetry. “This is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,” Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

JOE LUCAS
ENTRÉZ-VOUS INTERIOR DESIGNER JOE LUCAS WORKED HIS DESIGN MAGIC, CREATING A GRAPHIC GALLERY WALL WITH PAPERS ENVISIONED AS WORKS OF ART.
Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A “sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “The chic gray-and-saffron combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,” he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovationsupholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings. “I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “They feel less expectant than chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufacturer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement. “The plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

CASE STUDY GEOMETRICS AND BOLD PRINTS WERE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THIS SOPHISTICATEDLY CLAD BOOKCASE ORNAMENTED BY INTERIOR DESIGNER PHILIP GORRIVAN.
“There is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,” exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s heralded his longstanding love affair with the material throughout his design career. His studious composition began with an unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much to be desired. Presented with the latest lines, Gorrivan cloaked the back of the shelves with a subtle yet striking Farrow & Ball stripe and developed groupings of covered books in stylized vignettes, each layer telling its own story. “Dedar’s new boldly hued geometrics alongside Clarke & Clarke’s punchy floral patterns
“I tend to gravitate toward geometrics or patterns that aren’t so directional. I love products that are fearlessly gutsy. It’s fun to create a little tension in a space by introducing a wallpaper that appears to completely break all the rules.”

hen a husband and wife pair left the Portland area a little more than a decade ago, their friend and designer Heidi Semler had a feeling the couple would come back. “And they did,”
Semler remembers. Upon returning, the two asked her to help decide among four houses, including a historic Jacobethan-style brick home on a ridge above Portland’s downtown skyline. “I immediately said, ‘That’s it!’ It was this amazing classic beauty,” she says. Completed in 1922, the Leon Hirsch residence by acclaimed architects Sutton & Whitney is praised in the book Classic Houses of Portland, Oregon, 1850-1950 for its old-world elegance, from a crenellated parapet above banked second-floor windows to the Tudor-arched recessed entry. So while the Morgans wanted a home to fit their contemporary lifestyle, they also wanted to respect its original architecture. They spent a few years living in the house before undertaking many of the renovations, to develop a sense of what changes were needed. “It’s been a labor of love over several years,” the husband explains. “We’ve really tried to not only appreciate the architecture and history, but in some cases bring it back to an appropriate finish.” Enter brother-builder team Brian Bohrer and Jeff Bohrer, who came on board to oversee the preservation and construction elements. Original oak floors were restored, for example, and the profile of the existing crown molding was specially replicated in some areas and custommagnified in the kitchen and butler’s pantry for an updated slant. Even the original cast-iron radiators were retained and restored, and

paired with a new high-efficiency boiler that has reduced heating bills by two-thirds. “The attention to detail that exists in this house is stunning: the woodwork, moldings and plaster,” Brian says. “It’s so grand.” Rather than gutting the kitchen, pantry and butler’s pantry into one wide-open space, designer Michelle Vranizan, who worked for Semler at the start of the project and later returned to the home to design the kitchen and bathrooms after establishing her own firm, used the pantries to hide modern-day appliances but clad the kitchen with period-appropriate details such as white tile backsplashes and unlacquered brass fixtures. She also chose reflective surfaces such as quartzite countertops to help spread the light. “The thing the owner said when we started out was she wanted it to feel happy,” Vranizan remembers. “For me, being a native Oregonian, happy to me is sunlight, and we’ve got to maximize it where we live.” LUXE INTERIORS

One goal was to create an indoor-outdoor feel for the house, says landscape architect Craig Kiest. Semler’s design focused on adding light and color to public areas and bedrooms. “The house is really voluminous, so we wanted warmth,” she says. In the living room, for instance, cinnamon and cranberry tones were chosen for the sofas and other furniture, complementing the

In the house’s front, landscape architect Craig Kiest removed overgrown rhododendrons and added a small terrace, so the homeowners can entertain there in addition to the backyard, enjoying a view of the downtown skyline through a veil of German boxwood plants and Lavalle hawthorns. “We wanted to make the house more insideoutside,” Kiest explains, “and to use what would have been planted in the era of the house, rather than these new trees that haven’t been in common cultivation until recently.” Given new life, this Roaring Twenties house is ready for the new millennium: not just as historic renovation, but as an inviting modern home. “It’s traditional and classic, but it’s also a house that offers surprises: something unexpected,” Semler says, maintaining her original thought: “It’s just a beauty.” L 222 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

hey weren’t even looking for a house, not really. The young couple had scoped out a particular Portland neighborhood and had casually seen a few possibilities, but, says the wife, “we weren’t planning on jumping
right in.” And yet, when one came up that fit their criteria—close-in to the city and with a yard and knockout view—they were smitten. The house they fell for was a 1950s hillside home owned by the same family since it was built. This created a sentimental appeal for its new owners, but to say it was in disrepair was an understatement. As builder Joe Petrina, with whom the couple had met when looking at a previous house, puts it, “It hadn’t had a thing done to it in 50 years.”

In contrast with their casual approach to finding the house, their plans for its renovation were anything but. From the outset, they had a clear idea of what the place should and shouldn’t be. “We wanted to stay fairly true to the lines of the original house,” says the wife. “We didn’t want to have a lot of empty spaces, and we knew we wanted to warm it up with natural materials—wood, metal and concrete.” Inside, they wanted to create a sophisticated yet cozy landing pad for their growing family. The couple’s extensive research led them to residential designer Rick Berry, principle at the architecture firm they had been admiring. “Each of their homes was different, but the foundations were clean and interesting and could be layered on top of,” says the wife. That aesthetic dovetailed perfectly with the couple’s goals, and so Berry got to work, with architects Jeff Lusin and Kelly Edwards helping to bring the project to life. “We saved the downstairs and lower-level perimeter and built a new main level and an addition to the side, which we angled to capture the views,” says Berry. The number of windows tripled, with clerestories to bring northern light into the house and overhangs on the south to block the harsh summer sun. For the exterior, they aimed for a contemporary yet welcoming feel, with cedar siding “stained so the front of the house really pops,” Berry says. The landscape architecture, by Steve Shapiro and Blair Didway, contrasts the lines of the house with the naturalistic feel of basalt boulders and woodsy plantings. A dry stream, lined and topped with river rock, offers aesthetic appeal and also solved a draining issue.

The couple’s approach to the interiors was similarly thoughtful. Although they had worked with Domestic Arts’ Charlotte Cooney on paint color, carpet, tile selections and the countertops during the construction process, before jumping into the furnishings in earnest, “we decided to live in the house for a while,” says the wife. When they were ready, they knew they wanted to be a bit more playful. “We wanted it to have contrast—the sleek modern and the bohemian.” They connected with designers Joelle C. Nesen and Lucy Roland and brought visual references that ranged from high-concept Modernism to eclectic, handcrafted goods. From those opposing concepts, Nesen and Roland gave the owners “a gentle collected mix—a little groovy but timeless,” says Nesen. In their scheme, Modernist icons, such as the Eames dining chairs, mingle with more textural pieces such as an antler chandelier or a mod lounge chair covered in a nubby textile. A unique palette of reds and purples soften the crisp whiteness of the walls. Brass elements—on a vintage night table, a floor lamp—provide an earthy sort of glamour. Like the house itself, though, everything has a purpose and a place. “There aren’t a lot of extras anywhere,” says Nesen. Although the project began quickly, the final product tells the tale of deep and reflective collaboration. “It was a very rich and experiential process that developed over time,” says the wife. “We all brought something to the table and let the journey unfold naturally without holding on to any one concept too tightly.” L LUXE INTERIORS

t’s a magical setting,” says the owner of a contemporary waterfront retreat on Orcas Island. The property has been in his family for nearly five decades, and he has many fond memories of summers spent in the much smaller, more rustic
cabin that once stood on the site. When he and his wife took ownership of the property, they decided to replace the cabin with a more updated home. “We wanted to create something with additional space that also took better advantage of the light and views,” the wife says. For the undertaking, the couple turned to architect Joseph Herrin. “They were interested in an island vernacular, a Cape Cod style for the Northwest,” Herrin explains, pointing to his creation—a cedar-clad two-story barn-style structure that encompasses the bedrooms and bathrooms. Attached to it is a contemporary one-story structure that houses a great room with an expansive water vista. “Virtually every room in the house has a view, even though the short width of the house faces the sea,” the architect explains. “The living and dining space is one story so the second-floor bedrooms look over the top of it.”

According to builder Jonathan White, the project’s simplicity belies its complexity. “Larger homes have details per square foot while smaller homes like this have details per square inch,” White explains, noting the frame of the custom front door, which is separated by a quarter-inch reveal from wood paneling that was precisely milled from local fir trees. Fir was also used for the hardwood floors and custom built-in cabinetry that can be found in the home. “There wasn’t a lot of furniture to buy,” says Herrin, who worked with the owner on the built-ins and main floor furnishings; designer Bonnie Ward of Designward, Inc. stepped in to help the owner select window treatments and fabrics for pillows and window seats. Herrin designed the dining room table and a cocktail table, which

were both milled from a madrona tree that fell on the property before construction commenced. “The distinctions between furnishings and cabinetry blur and become irrelevant,” Herrin says. “It’s just one work.” To likewise blur the distinctions between interior and exterior, Herrin carried the cedar siding on the barn-like structure into the interior of the great room, where it creates a dramatic accent wall for the living and dining areas. Nearby, a pair of rusted steel structural columns supports a long plank that extends past the glass walls to the exterior on both sides. “Connecting the indoors and outdoors in this way is a classic device,” Herrin says. “Frank Lloyd Wright did it, and he likely got it from traditional Japanese architecture. It goes back centuries.”

Decks on both sides lead to walkways paved with natural beach gravel that landscape designer Steve Stanzione selected to tie in to the waterfront. On the side facing the sea, Stanzione incorporated a variegated bluestone patio with a fire pit. “It’s a neutral material that blends in quite well with the surroundings,” says Stanzione, who also added evergreens, fir, cypress and other foliage to the existing landscape. Although the project went smoothly and even wrapped up two months earlier than expected, the crew faced many site constraints. Perhaps most unforeseen was the ancient Lummi Nation fire pit that they found beneath the old cottage. Before construction could proceed, the pit had to be carefully excavated, capped with concrete, and then cataloged with the Smithsonian Institution Archives. Unpredicted as it was, Herrin was not necessarily surprised by the discovery. “Human beings have found this to be a pretty sweet place to hang out for at least 1,500 years,” Herrin says. The owners are no exception. “I’ve never known anyone who has visited and not fallen in love with this island,” the wife says. “Before, we’d close it up in October and not be able to go back until April or May. Now we’re able to spend time here year-round, and we couldn’t be happier.” L

he view is big,” says interior designer Leslie Minervini, referring to the breathtaking panoramas seen from the house that she helped design above picturesque Lake Oswego. “On cloudy days, you see the peaks. And when
the sun comes out, you see everything. I call it the hovercraft.” Soaring above the lake as it does, the site presented challenges. The lot is long and narrow, ending in a sharp drop; Curtis Olson, who designed the house along with architect Ralph Olson, recalls the infinity pool being placed at the southernmost lip, overlooking the lake, before building the actual house. “The clients wanted their home to be organized around entertaining and outdoor living,” Curtis says of the Pellow family, a couple with teenage boys. “They also wanted to blend the indoor and outdoor areas, while facing their beautiful view as much as possible.”

This was partly achieved by creating an extensive poolside courtyard at the rear of the residence. The hardscape material is dyed acid-washed concrete, with deep scoring and porcelain tile inlays or polished concrete defining specific niches, such as the covered outdoor living room, the sunbathing deck and the fire-pit terrace. “Smooth concrete has plenty of traction for rain or pool water. It’s skid-free and comfortable on the skin,” says landscape designer Michael Schultz, who collaborated with the architect and owners John and Kerri on the pool and hardscaping. The home’s inside-outside connectivity was further enhanced by the entire back wall’s opening onto the rear landscape through a sophisticated system of sliding glass doors and windows. “Everything had to be very precisely installed, so the indoor flooring, cabinetry and sheetrock would integrate seamlessly to the outdoors,” says builder John Tercek. The result is that the kitchen, great room and bar on the first floor combine with the poolside patio to create one vast indoor-outdoor space. There’s also an enclosed front courtyard off the dining area that facilitates even more flow. “I created subtle delineation,” Curtis says of the open plan. “Some is structural, like dropped ceiling beams, and some is material, such as the limestone block that houses the great room’s fireplace.” 248 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Weiland sliding glass doors connect the great room to the terrace and pool. Furniture includes a sofa table, gray cowhide ottomans and Lee Industries sofas, all found at Bedford Brown. The Noir coffee table came from Nest Showroom Portland. A rug from Contract Furnishings Mart further softens the scene.

Minervini worked in spatial distinction throughout the home using what she calls “50 shades of white.” Tied together by custom oak floors, the main rooms are painted in varying degrees of the crisp hue. “The
Contrast is key in the kitchen, which features stained rift walnut and painted white cabinetry from Imperial Cabinets & Millwork, and quartz countertops from Pental Granite & Marble, fabricated by Stone Center. Cyan Design lights from Accent Lighting suspend over the island.
paint we selected for the trim and cabinetry is a pure white with no pigment so as to offer some contrast,” she says. The kitchen and bar areas are also defined by flat-fronted walnut contemporary cabinets juxtaposed against white-painted Shaker-style cabinetry with traditional moldings. “The bones of the house are contemporary,” says Minervini, who worked closely with Kerri when picking out materials, finishes and furnishings, “but with a traditional twist.” These nods to tradition include a warm, inviting grass-cloth wallpaper in the stairwell, X-motif triple-paneled doors and hanging mirrors in the bathrooms. “I wanted the décor to be simple and casual, yet pretty and interesting, for people to move around easily and be comfortable,” says Kerri. In the covered outdoor living room, a mantel made from an oak tree that once stood at the corner of the property contrasts with the bluestone fireplace, which ensures the space can be used during the colder months. Lee Industries sofas offer comfortable seating beneath a Troy Lighting pendant, part of a pair.

The master bedroom is a light-filled oasis during the day and softly lit at night by a Hudson Valley Lighting chandelier and bedside lamps by Arteriors. Both the bed and daybed are by Lee Industries, acquired through Bedford Brown. The homeowner’s bench was reupholstered in Kravet fabric by Rose City Upholstery.
A Kravet rug lies at the base of the triple-panel custom TruStile door of the master bathroom. Porcelanosa tiles make way for rift-cut walnut vanities by Imperial Cabinets & Millwork and quartz countertops from Pental Granite & Marble. The drum pendant is by Stonegate Designs.

The layout works perfectly for entertaining, with living and dining furniture grouped inside and outside. Overall, transitional furnishings combine contemporary shapes with traditional fabrics, and the neutral palette of grays and tans is enlivened by dashes of citron, fun patterns, cowhide textures, nailhead trim, the shine of chrome and sculptural lighting. “We kept a clean look that wasn’t overly embellished, so that you weren’t constantly noticing things in the house instead of focusing on the bigger picture outside,” adds Minervini. The Pellow home fulfills its promise: a place where indoors and outdoors meet, and where folks love to spend time. “I have girlfriends over for happy hour in the Zen-like front courtyard, or our neighbors come over and use the pool,” Kerri says. “Even when we’re not entertaining, my husband sits in the covered outdoor living room, watching a TV show and smoking a cigar.” L LUXE INTERIORS

The Craigmuir Castle is now available. One of North Central Washington’s residential landmarks, located in the heart of Wenatchee, Washington. The Craigmuir Castle encompasses over 10,000 square feet of wonderful living space that includes 5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, 2 3/4 bathrooms, 6 fireplaces and a beautiful formal dining room. Old-world elegance coupled with modern amenities, such as a chef’s kitchen, butlers pantry, media room, work-out facilities and a very private and lovely pool and spa, add to the sense of endless space. The Craigmuir Castle was commissioned in 1922 by the Muirhead family, a Scottish descendant, with final construction completed in 1929. The Craigmuir Castle can be simply defined in one word; and that is love. From its inception to the current years of modern restoration, love of detail from the craftsman who built it, to the care and nurturing from the owners, love is what gives the Craigmuir Castle its unique place in America’s top residential homes.

KARA MANN
ROCK AND ROLL
AN AVANT-GARDE DESIGN SENSIBILITY PAIRED WITH SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION PROMISES AN OVER-THE-TOP DINING ROOM IN CHICAGO.
DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR Designer Kara Mann creates impeccable interiors for clients from her hometown of Chicago to the glittering city of Dubai. When asked about her favored fashion designer, she exclaims “Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. He makes rocker chic elegant,” she continues, almost inadvertently describing her own signature style. In the dining room pictured here, the draperies are made from Missoni fabric, while the chandelier mimics the punk theme of this year’s Met Ball. Recently, Mann launched a collection of supple leather fabrics with Moore & Giles, citing things such as a vintage Gucci motorcycle jacket as inspiration. Not surprising then that she crowns leather her favorite “non-neutral” neutral. Q+A How has your personal style evolved over the years? It’s become more edited, more sophisticated and more simplified. What is one trend that you’d love to see go? As far as interior design, I’d be happy not to see any more overdyed rugs, and for fashion I’m fairly tired of asymmetrical hems.
“I would describe my personal aesthetic and my interior design style as one in the same really...elegant, effortless edge.”

ROBERT PASSAL
DEFINITIVE EDGE
ADVENTUROUS PATTERNS, TAILORED LINES AND JUST THE RIGHT DOSE OF COLOR EQUAL A MODISH MASTERPIECE IN NEW YORK’S GRAMERCY PARK.
GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS The living room of designer Robert Passal’s New York apartment, with its custom moldings and eclectic accessories, perfectly exhibits his aesthetic, self-described as “classic and tailored with a definitive edge.” Passal’s décor point of view effuses his personal style, although he believes “there is a vast difference between dressing yourself and dressing a room.” With interiors, “space, scale and functionality are all major factors,” he explains. Not one to shy away from color, Passal considers a wide range of shades to be the easiest way to incorporate fashion into the home, his favorite hue being aqua. “I’m often called a peacock,” Passal laughs, “which I’ll take as a chic term of endearment.” Q+A Do you ever use fashion fabrics in your design projects? I’m crazy for men’s suiting, especially gray flannel and cashmere chalk stripes used in upholstery. Do you side more with Chanel’s “remove one item before leaving the house” or Tony Duquette’s “more is more?” I fall somewhere in the middle, but the trick is knowing when to stop. Living with items you love, be it art, accessories or daily heirlooms, makes a house a home.

TOBI TOBIN
NEUTRAL GROUND
SUBTLE PATTERNS, NOTEWORTHY SHAPES AND RICH TEXTURES TAKE CENTER STAGE IN A LAID-BACK CALIFORNIA LIVING SPACE.
INNATE STYLE Best known for a Hollywood-glam aesthetic in a mostly neutral palette, designer and shop owner Tobi Tobin believes that style comes from within, and as is the case with any tastemaker, she claims her tastes have evolved over the years. “I’ve come a long way from wearing preppy embroidered pants in Palm Beach,” she jokes. In her own Los Angeles living room, Tobin expertly layers creams, grays and wood tones, taking cues from Donna Karan—a favorite fashion designer. Her home also works as a place to try out new ideas for her eponymous shop on Sunset Boulevard, where she sells her own furniture collection among vintage pieces and signature candles. Q+A Best style advice? Style truly comes from within, but having the courage to live with it and express it to the world takes confidence. What’s your favorite unexpected neutral? Flax linen is a beautiful neutral, but only when paired with a range of other textures. How do you see fashion trends translated for interiors? Most often through color selection. As designers, we can’t help ourselves. Fashion and interiors have always gone hand in hand.
