BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Spring was the season for partying with Luxe Interiors + Design Pacific Northwest! In early March, we hosted industry panel discussions on building and design trends in Seattle at Bradlee Distributors and Bedford Brown in Portland. Then, we celebrated the grand opening of Driscoll Robbins Fine Carpets’ new showroom across from the Seattle Design Center with Hama Hama oysters and sparkling champagne. We also joined Roche Bobois in its gorgeous furnitureforward showroom next to Escala as Steinway & Sons entertained us with tunes by George Gershwin, played by acclaimed pianist Yoonie Han. Next up, we will be looking forward to BarkArt at the Seattle Design Center in late May, where design professionals will be paired with local artists to create dog-themed artwork that will be donated to underprivileged children on behalf of the Assistance League of Seattle’s Operation School Bell. Bark on!

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

WHO: Designer and self-described “professional appreciator” Jordan Carlson, who uses her feed to document her love for Seattle, which she rediscovered after returning to live in the city following a stint in New York. WHAT: On Carlson’s feed, you’ll find a bitesized narrative of Seattle’s buildings, lush landscape, restaurants and cafes told through beautiful images and whimsical descriptions. WHY: If you don’t already have a soft spot in your heart for Seattle, you’ll almost definitely fall in love with the city through Carlson’s eyes.

COSMOPOLITAN ON THE PARK

It’s almost an unwritten law at this point that what was once a rundown warehouse district will inevitably become a city’s most exciting cultural hub. Such is the case with the riverside Pearl District in Portland, where cobblestone streets and loading docks have been reimagined and are now home to chic galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Catering to the quickly gentrifying neighborhood, the 28-floor Cosmopolitan on the Park will soon host 150 elegant condominium homes, complete with stunning views of the city, river, mountains, parks and gardens. Among the planned luxury details are Pedini Italian cabinetry, gas fireplaces, European-oak flooring, Miele appliances and solid-surface quartz countertops; plus, added amenities such as a 24-hour concierge, a community room with fireplace and wine bar, three overnight guest rental suites and a fully appointed fitness center. Towering high above its neighboring buildings, the Cosmopolitan—which is due for completion later this year—is likely to become a defining modern feature of the historic Pearl District. cosmopolitanpearl.com

TALKING SHOP WITH JOCELYN RAHM

BEAM & ANCHOR

When did you open? My husband Robert and I first opened the doors to the store in the Eliot district in Portland in April 2012. Why the Eliot district? We loved the industrial landscape, and the building allowed us to have creative studio space for designers to work, which we could not have done in a high-traffic neighborhood. On the floor? Furniture, ceramics, accessories, apothecary and plants—a wide breadth of highquality products from all over the world, in addition to products that are actually made right above the store. Describe the space. The shop has a very open layout in which the merchandising thoughtfully echoes the feel of an eclectic and well-considered home. We also have regular art openings, dinners, parties and special events. beamandanchor.com 140 / LUXESOURCE.COM

IN HER WORDS: “My feed has become a visual love letter of sorts to the city. While I’m enamored with the process of finding and experiencing great places in the area, it’s equally rewarding to celebrate and share the discoveries. Interiors and architecture are not only an aesthetic expression, but they speak of layers of a story. They are integral in establishing both the intimate and the communal part of our profoundly human experience.”

DATE BOOK ALEKSANDRA POLLNER

Hailing originally from Gdańsk, Poland, after a rather gypsy-like childhood, multimedia artist Aleksandra Pollner eventually made Seattle her home. Though she graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in literary theory and psychology, it was design that finally captured her heart. Particularly inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi, and the colors, textures, light, shadow and reflections found in the oeuvre of Mexican architect Luis Barragán, Pollner examines the tension between different types of surfaces. Her recent furniture collection, for example, meditates on the intersection between a line and a circle and combines copper and brass with concrete. After completing her Master of Fine Arts at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, Pollner will soon return home to Seattle. Here, she details her perfect Saturday in the city. aleksandrapollner.com 10 a.m. You have to start the morning with coffee, so you might as well go to one of the best places: Caffé D’arte. If the star alignment is right, you also might get a bit of sardonic wit with that Americano. 10:30 a.m. Take your cup to go, cut over to 1st Avenue, and walk to the Peter Miller bookstore. Peter is a legend in Seattle, and he probably has every design and architectural book you didn’t even know you wanted. 12 p.m. After spending more money than you anticipated on books, go to Boat Street Kitchen, a short walk away. It’s a cozy place that will transport you to the Netherlands or France. And since you’re in the neighborhood, stop by Macrina Bakery and pick up some sweets in anticipation of your sugar levels dropping later. 142 / LUXESOURCE.COM

2 p.m. Right around the corner is the Olympic Sculpture Park and Myrtle Edwards Park, which overlooks Puget Sound and has stunning views of the Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainier and the city. This is one of my favorite places for walking and dreaming. 3 p.m. The real reason you’re there, though, is for the art! Permanent installations at the sculpture park include the works of Michael Heizer, Richard Serra, Sir Anthony Caro, Mark di Suvero, Roy McMakin, Alexander Calder, Tony Smith, and so many more. See them all. 4 p.m. Walk toward the city via the waterfront and be sure to cut through to Pike Place Market and back to 1st Avenue. If you’re in the mood for a bit of fashion, stop into the wonderful Baby & Company and Jack Straw.

5 p.m. Across the street, you’ll find one of my favorite little French bistros for wine and oysters, called Le Pichet. Make sure to arrive hungry. 7 p.m. Check if there is an opening at the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery. If not, then go for a cheap massage in the International District (and make sure you go back to the gallery the next day). There are quite a few foot massage parlors in the area, but the one I go to is on Jackson and 12th, right next to Saigon’s Bakery. 9 p.m. Time for dinner and drinks downtown at Le Caviste, another French bistro opened by David Butler, who was formerly at all the best French places in town. You’re bound to spend hours chatting with David and with people adjacent to your table. Cheers to making friends!

IN THE GRASS THE ROMANONES, 1976

The summer solstice is upon us, a time of year so effortlessly captured by the masterful eye of photographer Slim Aarons. His iconic lens conjures the season’s most glorious outdoor pastimes—such as afternoon tea during the golden hour and toes grazing the cool grass, as pictured in the Spanish garden shown—and have incited the following fresh selections. Monaco’s storied beaches have long attracted the überchic, and for good reason: Nothing says summer like a lackadaisical lunch enjoyed seaside. to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

GROW

INTO THE WILD

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

MARKET / SPOTLIGHT

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

MARKET / SPOTLIGHT

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS THE-CITIZENRY.COM

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

MARKET / SPOTLIGHT

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

198 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 200 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

SET THE TONE SERENA & LILY

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 204 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

ALL THE TIPS, TOOLS AND TIDBITS THAT WILL HELP TURN YOUR OWN BACKYARD INTO YOUR NEW FAVORITE RETREAT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

Nothing says all are welcome like a disappearing wall that invites the outdoors in. THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

What truly makes outdoor spaces exceptional isn’t just natural beauty; though, it’s hard to think of a more serene scene than a private pool secreted away behind extra-tall hedges, like in this handsome setting designed by Los Angeles’ Schuyler Samperton. Instead, it’s the combination of beauty and function (think no prying eyes to ogle that cute two-piece while you’re taking a dip) that keeps inhabitants and visitors alike coming back. samperton.com

ANDERSON POOLWORKS A key factor in any outdoor living space, water is the element on which Dana Anderson is an

expert. The president of Anderson Poolworks is well-versed in the unique aesthetic, technical and functional challenges presented by a water feature. “Our design capabilities stem from a wide range of experience,” he says. “Whether it is a 50-meter competition pool or a small backyard cocktail pool, each one benefits from experience gained through the other.” Anderson points to glass tile finishes, zero-depth entries and shallow-depth sun ledges as being today’s top trends in aquatic design.

+ Establish a budget and communicate it clearly. + Each project is unique and should be thoroughly planned.

The integration of beautiful materials will fall flat if it is not appropriate for the environment and application.

+ A design that complements both your home and lifestyle is of the utmost importance. + Smart lighting + Create a layout that flows with the expected traffic while simultaneously accentuating topography and view corridors.

+ Continuity of materials is important. + Where there are pools, there should also be safety barriers, like walls and fences. These can be designed to blend into the landscape nicely, often completely hidden.

ADVANCING OPTIONS “We have always worked toward designs and systems that use the least amount of sanitizing chemicals,” Anderson says. “Salt systems are popular because the perception is that they reduce chlorine or are free of it altogether. Once clients understand salt systems are actually chlorine generators, and we introduce them to ultraviolet systems that are much more effective at sanitizing and therefore reduce chlorine demand in a real way, they are thrilled.” Variable-speed pumps have also changed the reality of owning a pool, enabling hundreds of dollars in electricity to be saved per year, while still resulting in cleaner and clearer water.

CAMBIUM Given its renowned natural beauty, the Pacific Northwest presents a unique backdrop and an opportunity for landscape architects to design refined living spaces and exquisite gardens located within a stunning natural environment. Enter Tim Moshier and Jason Breitling of Cambium, a landscape architecture firm providing the highest quality landscape design, construction and maintenance services. Moshier points to quality planting design as an element often overlooked in landscape architecture, especially in an area that supports such a wide array of flora. “Designing beautiful stone dining terraces and water features is only a part of the equation,” he says. “Artfully choosing the right plants for the desired effect, whether color, texture, screening attribute or overhead cover, is important. However, these plant materials must perform horticulturally where they are used. Right plant, right place.” He goes on to say that beautiful native plants are being incorporated more frequently in the region as of late.

Good designers carefully create gardens that respectfully reflect the tastes and lifestyle of the client.

REGIONAL TREASURES “We are fortunate that the Pacific Northwest climate supports an incredibly diverse plant palette,” Breitling says. “There are fantastic opportunities to create gardens, from a northern Japanese-style courtyard using evergreens and bamboo to a Mediterranean palm-filled garden on Lake Washington’s shore.” Venturing to nurseries throughout Washington, British Columbia and the Willamette Valley in Oregon, Cambium’s professionals hand-select key specimens. “To mention just one favorite evergreen tree, I’ll offer up Berliner’s Weeper Serbian spruce,” Moshier says. “It is an exquisite, upright evergreen tree with steely, bluish streaks on the needles and a branching habit that is reminiscent of a candelabra.”

TERRAIN As described by its president, Earl Gracey, Terrain’s philosophy lies in “a global approach to a traditionally localized craft.” The landscape development company’s designers and builders travel the world, seeking out innovative ideas and products—like a massive clay amphora, one of Gracey’s recent finds in Barcelona—to bring home to the Pacific Northwest. At the root of the firm’s process lies a passion for the outdoors and the social environments they facilitate. “We are inspired by consumers embracing outdoor living as part of a home’s design and flow,” Gracey says. “We love the science behind how people behave in different environments, the way you can get people to congregate in certain areas, relax and appreciate nature.”

We build to enhance the environment. It’s what makes this industry fun. We install designs that are literally alive.

EARL GRACEY’S QUESTIONS YOUR DESIGN PROFESSIONAL SHOULD ASK + How do you want the landscape to reflect yourself? + What are your goals for the space? + Who will be the primary users of the space? + Do you intend to entertain large numbers of people? + What size is your immediate family? + Are there children and/or pets with needs to be considered? Gracey notes the introduction of smartphone controls integrated into lighting, gate controls and water features are exciting innovations. Evolving standards. “Today, the expectation is that the home and landscape function together,” Gracey says. “Homes in the ultraluxury market demand larger scale and more complex landscape components.”

URBAN OASIS DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION While outdoor living design may seem straightforward, achieving a space that complements both home and homeowner involves countless details and stylistic nuances. At Urban Oasis Design & Construction, the need to create unique spaces based on the client’s personal aesthetic preferences and the architecture of the home is well understood. Principals Carrie Culp and Trevor Daley, who each play an integral part in every project their firm undertakes, note a successful experience depends on collaboration between homeowner and design professional. “Prior to meeting a designer, spend time dreaming about the potential of your outdoor space and prioritizing the items on your wish list,” Culp suggests. “Look through magazines and websites to compile images that appeal to you. When you meet with a landscape architect, it will be easier to clearly convey your project goals, as well as your tastes.”

SEASONAL INSPIRATION

Your space should be as beautiful and inviting in the evening as it is during the day.

“At Urban Oasis, we love spring!” Culp says. “Everyone is excited about longer days and the chance to spend more time outside. During this time, updated materials and new plant varietals are being introduced. We are inspired to incorporate them into our designs.”

1

2

ON TREND IN SEATTLE: THE OUTDOOR ROOM “In the Seattle metropolitan area, the covered outdoor room is among the biggest trends in outdoor living,” Culp explains. “Homeowners are looking to extend the time they can spend outside, and a covered structure with heaters or a fireplace creates a three-season room for the enjoyment of the homeowner.” Daley adds that attached, covered spaces also increase the home’s square footage for resale, saying, “Often, kitchens with plenty of open counter space are incorporated so homeowners can grill outside all year long and entertain easily in our beautiful Pacific Northwest summers.” 3

1. This three-season structure features a full kitchen, pizza oven and two-story fireplace with ample room for dining and lounging. 2. Right: Visitors to a Montana home, by architects George Suyama and Chris Haddad, can pass through an interior courtyard to the main residence beyond. Custom barntype gates close across the façade, while tight-knot cedar siding by Bigfork Custom Woodworks, a division of builder Jason Martel’s company, accents the structure. Opposite: Designer Christian Grevstad’s concept for the interiors leans toward understated modernism. He placed a console by his own Christian Grevstad Collection, from Terris Draheim, in the living room. Above is an encaustic-on-linen artwork on a wood panel by Joseph Goldberg.

I

t must have been fate: Right after interior designer Christian Grevstad’s former clients purchased land in Montana with an eye toward building a vacation home there, they spotted a contemporary project of Grevstad’s on the cover of Luxe Interiors + Design. The house was clad in Montana ledgestone, which, he reports, “was a great idea for this property.” So the Seattlebased owners turned to Grevstad once again, this time for a design that would be in tune with the one-time cattle-grazing land in the shadow of the Ruby Mountains yet devoid of log-cabin clichés. Grevstad called on Seattle architect George Suyama to help him accomplish the task. “It had to do with simplicity of shape and a sense of scale that’s appropriate for the property,” Suyama says. But there was still much to be done before anything could be built.

The property encompasses about 300 acres of flatland, with the Ruby River on the east and the mountains to the west. “The site is very exposed, and the weather is dramatic,” says project architect Chris Haddad. That meant the team had to create a defining and protective terrain for the house where none existed before. Their solution was to dig out two large ponds to anchor the site and use the extracted earth to build a network of berms surrounding the house—“a primitive shelter sensibility,” as Haddad calls it. Landscape designers Jeremy Stark and Kalan Murano collaborated with the team at Suyama Peterson Deguchi Architects to create a mini-ecosystem surrounding the site. “Schematically, the ponds are meant to mimic the wetlands that are found in this area, primarily by the river,” Stark says. So, he planted several varieties of willow and cottonwood

in and around the waters. “Grass seed, plus a mixture of shrubs and trees, on the berms speak to the faraway foothills,” he adds. Murano says he was pleased to see sandhill cranes, badgers and red-winged blackbirds around the ponds even before they were completed. The landscape and weather conditions also drove the home’s architecture. “For the house to have a presence on the site, it needed length,” says Haddad. Referencing architectural buildings, the architects employed beams and rafters that slope downward toward the mountains but still open dramatically to the glass walls. Moreover, the weather moves in so forcefully, Haddad points out, that “big overhangs on the house and a sense of protection are very important.” A secondary building, which contains a garage, gym and art studio, stands in back of the main

house and adds another layer against the elements. “There’s a strong axis that crosses both these structures,” Haddad says. “It also creates a courtyard space that allows protection from the wind.” “The modern details are a little bit different from what we’re used to seeing out here,” builder Jason Martel says, noting, “The exposed concrete was the most unusual design feature for our region.” And the tall glass-enclosed tower that rises through the center of the house offers 360-degree views of the property, where the husband reports he has spotted hundreds of deer, along with elk, antelope and moose. The tower’s windows open on all sides, venting hot air out of the house so effectively that it doesn’t need air conditioning—especially after the summer breezes are cooled as they blow across the ponds.

In the living/dining area, Wicker Works’ dining chairs have cushions upholstered with Woolrich blankets surround a dining table from Colin Fisher Studios in Cathedral City, California. A Karastan carpet from Associated Incorporated grounds an RH coffee table and JJ Custom sofa. The table lamps are from YLighting.

Suyama and Haddad’s vision for the home references traditional agricultural structures. Landscape designers Jeremy Stark and Kalan Murano collaborated with the architects on the landscape plans for the extensive site. Plantings of cottonwoods, aspens, willows and grasses echo the surrounding terrain.

Artwork in the master suite includes an encaustic work by the wife above the custom bed, from Grevstad’s collection, and a sinuous sculpture by Marko Kratohvil. The Holly Hunt light is from Jennifer West. The flooring here and throughout the home is from Harbour Hardwood Floors.

“Throughout the home, we employed concrete, specialty plaster and stone, paying homage to the simple, organic surroundings,” Suyama says. Grevstad, in turn, used similarly natural materials. “We wanted the palette to blend into the environment,” he says. “Combinations of colors and textures influenced the ultimate selections.” Hair-on-hide rugs, for instance, channel the roaming animals, custom chairs are upholstered in Mexican blankets, a felt fabric feels like soft saddlecloth, and cocktail tables were built from fallen timber. Rather than a profusion of color, the blending of different textures is the real story here. “We used a lot of compound textures that relate to the environment,” says Grevstad. “It’s about bringing this contemporary house some organic sensibilities.” For example, he designed a cedar

console with a burnt finish to look rough and weathered. The rug in the living room was handwoven from abaca plants—a contrast to the smooth European white-oak floorboards. The granite kitchen has a flamed finish resembling river rock. “We tried to create an experience of being in Montana instead of over-glorifying it,” Grevstad says. Incorporating those natural elements into the architecture and interiors is what makes the project so successful. “Instead of contrasting with the landscape, we were complementing it,” says Grevstad. “That seemed to resonate and make the space feel bigger than it is. Entry into the house feels like a magnetic pull to nature outside. You’re overwhelmed by this remarkable view, only to realize that you are in the interior while experiencing the vastness of the landscape beyond.”

Ted Boerner armchairs from Terris Draheim, a Rose Tarlow Melrose House ottoman from Jennifer West and a spotted cowhide rug from Sunland Home Decor in Tucson all help to create a cozy vignette in the den. Martel’s firm fabricated the built-in white-oak cabinetry, which includes a desk area.

F

lowers are such an ephemeral beauty, and it’s almost as if their fleeting nature makes them even more beautiful,” says Seattle florist, farmer, shop owner and restaurateur Katherine Anderson. “I don’t try to fight that quality of the material, but rather embrace it in the installations and arrangements that I make.” Working primarily with materials she has grown or foraged herself or found locally, Anderson has made her name crafting exquisite arrangements. Anderson comes by her green thumb honestly, as she worked alongside her avid-gardener father growing up. The Seattle native eventually headed east to college, earning a landscape architecture degree from Harvard. After practicing for some time, she quite literally set her sights on another field. “I wanted to get my hands dirty,” she shares, “to grow and make things, and as it turns out, make things with flowers.”

In the summer of 2008, Anderson began her first growing season at the farm she dubbed Marigold and Mint—in a valley east of Seattle—where she now grows peonies, roses, berries and bulbs (she maintains a small operation at her home, too). Two years later, she opened a brick-and-mortar shop of the same name on Capitol Hill, where she carries a seasonal crop of flowers and herbs—much from her own land—and has space for floral design. There’s also a selection of ceramics, floral design tomes, linens and apothecary items—including her own Marigold and Mint Botanicals line. More recently, Anderson teamed up with Seattle chef Matt Dillon to create The London Plane, a café, artisanal grocery and floral workshop, with space for Anderson to do larger-scale floral work and teach floral design classes. With the all-inthis-together mentality of any proper flower child, she muses, “We all share a singular approach to living—how to eat, be nourished and embrace beauty, whether on the plate or in the vase.”

INTERIOR DESIGN / JULIE M. KLEINER, MASSUCCO WARNER MILLER INTERIOR DESIGN ARCHITECTURE / HOLDEN WITHINGTON, BEERS WITHINGTON

Designer Julie M. Kleiner reimagined the rooms of a charming and stately traditional-style home in Seattle that was built in the early 1900s and renovated by Holden Withington. Prioritizing usability and comfort, she imbued the spaces with splashes of cheerful color for her clients and their family.

O

ne of designer Julie M. Kleiner’s antidotes to living under the gray skies of the Pacific Northwest is to fill a home with layer upon layer of vibrant colors and whimsical patterns. “In my mind, I paint almost every house a pale color and imagine bright spring and summer colors for the interior to counter the fact that this is a dark place,” says Kleiner. The designer’s clients liked the idea of lightening things up, too. More than a decade ago, the couple purchased an early1900s house in Seattle—complete with wood shingles, stately Craftsman-style columns and a generous front porch—for sale on the same street where the wife grew up. Then, they called on now-retired architect Holden Withington to open up the floor plan. “The previous owner

had put up a lot of walls and covered up a pretty banister and some of the molding,” says Kleiner. Afterward, the family lived there for eight years before connecting with the designer, whom they had hired to design their vacation home. “We hit it off, and they decided they wanted me to design their primary residence,” she says. “The wife told me the renovation made her crave something white and bright, and she wanted a gracious interior; something welcoming and happy.” Answering the wife’s request, Kleiner painted the walls and trims a cheerful white. “Oftentimes, in a traditional-style home, every inch of wood—including window casings, banisters, doors and millwork—is dark and heavy,” says Kleiner. “People are afraid to paint it.” Against the crisp white backdrop, she wove in texture,

much of which is, of course, in brilliant color. “I used traditional fabrics like velvets and linens,” says Kleiner, who placed a linen-wrapped console behind a linenupholstered sofa in the living room; the office displays a pair of side chairs dressed with coral boiled wool. “I also used a lot of blush tones,” the designer says, noting the hues add warmth and softness and offset the possibility of the white trim and lighter wall colors feeling stark or cold. Rose-and-cream-colored draperies in the dining room feature a botanical print trimmed with coral ribbon, and the dining chairs are dressed, in part, with a coral print fabric and trim. Kleiner introduced blue to the dining room in the form of framed de Gournay embroideryon-silk wallpaper panels that read as artwork. Pops of blue delight in the family room, too, where a lounge chair is upholstered in a pale blue solid and armchairs are covered with bright blue trellis-patterned fabric that features a buttery yellow trim. Kleiner added florals, stripes, stars and plaids to the mix of botanical, block and diamond patterns artfully woven throughout the residence. “I find you can use a lot of different patterns as long as there’s balance,” the designer explains. “I don’t ever use only tiny or large prints; I like to mix scales.” Kleiner also uses a spot of taupe here and there to temper lively pattern. “Wool or linen, or something

with a lot of texture and neutral color, breaks up more traditional prints,” she says. “The grass cloth on the dining room walls is so textured that it’s a pattern unto itself. It reads almost like a natural plaid that offsets the colorful block and botanical prints.” Likewise, Kleiner incorporated both antique and contemporary furniture and fixtures to create more interest and comfort in the home. “The architecture doesn’t lend itself to something that’s too contemporary,” she says. “I like a good English armchair or a chesterfield sofa. The classics are timeless and go with a lot, but too much traditional style can make an interior feel overly formal. A blend is unexpected and more inviting.” In the living room, for instance, the linen-covered console has a modern profile, while the sofa has an English roll-style arm. Kleiner also arranged a ceramic drum table beside a

traditional-feeling armchair and flanked the fireplace with Louis XVI-style tables as well as a pair of upholstered chairs. In some cases, however, she tweaked the classics. “The light fixture in the entry has a very traditional silhouette,” Kleiner notes. “You normally see these traditional fixtures in brass or bronze, but I painted this one a powdercoated pale blue. It just freshened it up.” The fixture hangs above an antique settee with a carved-wood frame, which is another family heirloom. “I think I’m sometimes trying to create artificial sunlight,” says Kleiner about her impulse toward bright color and pattern. Luckily, she and her clients are on the same page with the home’s look. “The wife wanted something different,” the designer says. “This house and this community are very dear to her heart. They have warmth and history, and the interiors really speak to that.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 277

t’s not every day that you wake up with a fully fledged textile collection, but that’s about what happened to Portland designer Caitlin Wilson. While based in Hong Kong, “I met a friend who was a textile designer, and we just started working on a line together,” she says. “Before I knew it, we had a 16-pattern collection.” After stints around the globe and in the United States, Wilson and her family eventually settled in Portland in 2013—bringing along her business, Caitlin Wilson Design, with her—and she immediately began finding inspiration in her new home. “There are a lot of people who would stereotype Portland as being very gray, but there’s this whole other side to it, a colorful side,” says Wilson, pointing out the city’s abundant greenery and the beautiful blooms. So, the designer brought her vision of her adopted hometown to life in the form of vibrant patterns: floral pillows in prints pretty enough to be framed, striped fabrics that capture the feel of an artist’s brushstroke, and chic buffalo-checkered wallpaper rendered with an artist’s eye.

As Wilson’s business continues to grow, it’s important to her that she doesn’t compromise creativity for the sake of commerce. “I feel passionately about things,” she admits. “If there’s a color or a pattern that I feel strongly about that I think people might need to come around to, I’ll take a risk.” Many of her ideas come from design voids she’s seeking to fill in her own life, say the need for a windowpane fabric in a specific shade or the desire for a plaid in an unexpected palette. “My brand is very much about putting a twist on the traditional,” says Wilson. “I’m moving away from the younger, poppier things and focusing on timeless patterns in sophisticated color schemes.” Wilson has come a long way since her time in Hong Kong. Today, she is planning her Fall 2016 case goods launch—“I am always looking for beautiful side tables for our product photo shoots,” she notes. “They can be hard to find!”—has had her wallpaper picked up by Anthropologie, and still finds time for an occasional interiors project. “I perform well under pressure,” she says with casual understatement. “The more I’m juggling, the easier it is for me to keep going.”

efore hiring an architect to design a home for himself and his wife, the husband, an engineer, began sketching a few ideas for the couple’s new residence along the Deschutes River in Bend. Spaces oriented toward the river—an open kitchen and living area and a second-story master bedroom—were key to the concept, as was a central courtyard. “The courtyard brings natural light and breathing space into what would otherwise be a dense, long block,” says architect Nils Finne, whom the couple tasked with realizing their vision. “There’s the public spectacle of the river on one side and a very quiet space where you can sunbathe with a book on the other.” Between the courtyard and the river, the home seems to float above a spectacular rock ledge. On one side it is anchored by a long structure covered in corrugated steel, which acts as a binding element for the smaller cedar-clad modules on the other side. “The nature of the steel siding is a nice cold juxtaposition against the wood,” says Finne, who worked with project manager/architect Chris Hawley. “Red cedar is a beautiful natural material with great longevity and an enduring natural beauty.” Inside, every room has a view. The living area, for example, boasts two 8-by-8-foot expanses of glass— one facing the river and another into the courtyard. Perhaps no view compares to the one from the porcelainand-glass-tiled master bathroom, which cantilevers out dramatically over the water. “There’s this nice trio of spaces facing the river, but the bathroom is the space that projects out the farthest,” notes Finne, since a projecting master bedroom would have been the more obvious choice. The extensive glazing serves additional purposes that were key to Finne’s mission, bringing in

abundant natural light and—thanks to generous overhangs, built-in shades and high operating clerestory windows— allowing for efficient heating and cooling. Besides the views, Finne brought a further eye-catching detail: a pair of curvilinear wood ceiling panels in both the living and dining areas. With each panel composed of 60 uniquely shaped wood slats cut by a CNC machine, the softly undulating forms are evocative of the river beyond. “The rectilinear container needed a contrasting sense of curvature and a natural form to act as a foil to the boxy living and dining areas,” he says. As with the exterior, Finne juxtaposed materials inside, combining wood, metal, stone and glass in dynamic ways. “If you put different types of materials against each other, they almost glow,” the architect points out. “Thinking about how these materials were put together is a source of delight and surprise for anyone who experiences the building.” For example, in the living area, burnished-steel beams accent a stone fireplace, a combination Finne also introduced in the upstairs study. Elsewhere, the etchedglass inset in the sapele-encased island glows thanks to its integrated LED lighting, and for the stairs, quartersawn red-oak treads, an etched-glass railing panel and blackened steel all harmonize. The homeowners took on the responsibility of the furnishings themselves, instinctively selecting transitional pieces covered in neutral fabrics. “This house doesn’t have a huge amount of ornamentation, and we didn’t want to clutter it up with a lot of furniture,” says the husband. Instead, the couple’s choices perfectly complement the architecture and allow it to be the star. During construction, builders Tim Duey and Trevin Duey—who each now have companies of their own—dug deep retaining walls, which allowed the structure to sit close to the water. “We had to build the walls on each side of the property in order to get the grade down far enough, so the house would sit where it needed to sit,” says Trevin Duey. “It was designed to work with the contour of the land.” Adding to the complexity of the project, the narrow lot made it very difficult to stage equipment, so the team improvised. “Normally we work with a tractor, but in this situation, we hand-carried pretty much every piece of wood that went into the house,” says Tim Duey. To say that the couple take advantage of their new abode is something of an understatement. “In the spring and the summer, we’re on the water at least a few times a week,” the husband reports. “The house is on a small lot in middle of the city, and yet it feels connected to the river and nature. It’s a joy to live in.” For his part, Finne waxes lyrical about the structure he designed: “The house can be seen as a brief set of variations on the lovely melodic themes provided by the river landscape.”

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
