THE FIRST DISRUPTORS IN THE FURNITURE INDUSTRY TURN THIRTY. ICONIC LUXURY HOME FURNISHINGS BRAND MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF DESIGN AND INNOVATION

Thirty years ago, Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams set out to make the world a more comfortable place. With a shared belief that comfort has the power to change lives, they created a home furnishings brand unlike any other. Disruptors in the furniture industry long before it was fashionable, Mitchell and Bob broke barriers from the start. Not only were they introducing bold new designs, they were also offering lifetime warranties on products and delivering goods within 30 days. Throughout their 30 years in business together, Mitchell and Bob have never been afraid to push boundaries and take creative risks, especially in their ad campaigns. While some have been more risqué than others, many of the brand’s ads have helped shape opinions about equality, in addition to selling furniture.

Other ads featured the late great Lulu, Mitchell and Bob’s beloved bulldog mascot. Lulu was (and still is) the company’s muse, especially when it comes to designing family- and pet-friendly furnishings. Lulu’s memory is honored in other ways at the company’s factory and corporate headquarters in North Carolina. Employees can enjoy a healthy breakfast and lunch at Café Lulu, the on-site, chef-run cafeteria. And there’s Mitchell and Bob’s proudest accomplishment: Lulu’s Child Enrichment Center, a non-profit, 5-star daycare, which was the first of its kind in the furniture industry. Thirty years later, Mitchell and Bob are still shaking things up. While their signature modern style has evolved over the past three decades,, their iconic designs still reflect early aspirations to elevate entertaining and help others create a comfortable home.

With the Spring 2019 Collection, Mitchell and Bob introduce their anniversary line of Les Petite Seats. Chicly styled for cozy nooks or larger conversation areas, these versatile, small-scale accent chairs offer the brand’s trademark comfort in a compact footprint. Choose from in-stock options, or customize in 300-plus fabrics and leathers (including C.O.M). Experience Les Petite Seats and the new Spring Collection in comfort at one of 30-plus Signature Stores, or explore the entire collection at mgbwhome.com.

COASTAL LIVING My mood board represents my relaxed, yet cultivated design style. Each piece included was handpicked during my recent travels in Ecuador, and blends perfectly with Eldorado Stone’s Limestone in Austin Cream. I can see the stone in a future project—perhaps a beautiful accent wall, or backyard fire pit.

Claudia Afshar Claudia Afshar Design

GLOBALLY INSPIRED Eldorado Stone’s LedgeCut33 in Birch reminds me of my childhood spent amongst Spain’s cobble roads and historic architecture. It inspired a dream design project—a contemporary villa with warm and textural components, integrating timeless materials, earth tones and olive green accents.

MODERN BEAUTY Decorators are storytellers. The color, texture, size and shape of stone influences the story it’s going to tell. When creating this mood board with Eldorado Stone’s Zen24 in Nickel, I imagined a beautiful fireplace wall with natural elements and a modern design aesthetic.

EDITOR’S LETTER

IN THE MAKING

Dressed in Cabana Vintage, looking like I literally walked off the walls of designer Meg Braff’s old-school Florida bedroom at the Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House.

Much like a fashion show, design is about storytelling; creating a fantasy. Yet in reality, the process is equal parts imagination and hard work, all in preparation for show time. The final reveal and wow-factor moments don’t necessarily reflect the hours of decisionmaking; the emails, phone calls and installs; the headboard that doesn’t fit through the front door (and had to be craned-in through a second-story terrace); the crack in the poured concrete that needs to be reset. However, when it’s pencils down time, architects, designers and contractors pull it together and get it done. I love hearing behind-the-scenes stories about the design process; both the bloopers and the wins. Shortly before press time, I attended the Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House where many designer-friends had fabulous rooms. Each of them had a vision of what they would conjure for their space. They upholstered and wallpapered, carpeted and plastered; moved things in, out and around until opening day when the dream went on display. Every home undergoes a dress rehearsal of sorts. We certainly hope that you enjoy the show!

LUXE SURVEYS NINE LEADING ARCHITECTS ON TIMELESS DESIGN AND CRAFTING AUTHENTIC HOMES.

WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY AND BRITTANY CHEVALIER-MCINTYRE

RENÉE DEL GAUDIO

Boulder | rdg-architecture.com BACK TO BASICS: I look deeply into the climate, landscape and history of a place for design inspiration. I can arrive at an authentic design only after integrating these elements. You know a building connects to its location when you could not imagine it anywhere else. HISTORY LESSON: The ancient Greeks taught us the importance of harmonizing different components of a structure and creating right-size buildings in proportion and scale. We often forget those lessons in 21st-century architecture. LASTING IMPRESSION: I traveled a long way to see Swiss architect Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths at Vals, and it was one of the most memorable architectural moments of my life. It is all about the human sensory experience: visual, olfactory, auditory and tactile.

⊳ MARK JENSEN

San Francisco | jensen-architects.com UNSUNG HERO: Rebar is a material that you don’t actually see, but it miraculously allows lumbering concrete to become a light and graceful dancer. ACOUSTICS MATTER: It's important to consider the properties of sound—you can’t see it in photographs, but you feel it when you are in a space. Through the magic of synesthesia, you can almost see sound qualities while in an acoustically well-considered place. WISH LIST: I long for a return to less-smart homes. I sense many of my clients feel that connectivity has reached a saturation point and the well-designed space will be one that abstains from distractions in favor of mindful connection to place.

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING

⊳ RENE GONZALEZ

Miami | renegonzalezarchitects.com NATURE AND NURTURE: Every project begins with understanding the location and a site’s unique qualities. This also applies to cultural conditions, as was the case with a house we designed in Key Biscayne that depicts its Latin setting with the inclusion of patios, portales (porches) and persianas (louvered screens). FORWARD THINKING: Modernism will always be popular in architecture, but I wish nostalgia would fall out of style. Contemporary design, which still adheres to many of the tenets of modernism, is timeless. Some people find comfort in nostalgia and pastiches of historical styles, but the end result never feels authentic to me. LIVING IN HARMONY: Our design for the Prairie Avenue house in Miami Beach, a luxury residence elevated in response to the environmental threat of sea-level rise, acknowledges traditional precedents such as native American Chickee huts and the community of Stiltsville. It is adapted to contemporary living in sync with the changing environment.

KATHY HANCOX AND MICHAEL KOTHKE

Tucson | hkassociates.net

SPLURGE-WORTHY: The best quality windows are the first indication of thoughtfulness in a design, and they can by far make or break the final outcome of a project. PROUD MOMENT: For a home in Southampton, New York, the client was excited to approach the architecture, landscape and interior decoration of the home in a comprehensive way. It was a rare and enjoyable occurrence to have oversight on every aspect of the residence. EARLY INSPIRATION: I saw The Sound of Music at the age of 4 and was so impressed by the Von Trapp’s baroque classical villa. Since then, I have been inspired by grand ballrooms, which is a space sadly lost to history for most elevated clients. To have a grandly scaled and ornate room sparsely furnished so that a special event may take place truly makes the space extraordinary.

⊳ JILL RERUCHA

Seattle | reruchastudio.com CLASSIC VS. TRENDY: When a client is focused on a trend, they’re often missing the bigger picture of permanence and place. Natural light, however, will always be in fashion. We have an innate attachment to the sun here in Seattle. The projects that harness this best are the ones that feel eternal. INFLUENTIAL BUILDING: I traveled to France on a tour of Le Corbusier’s architecture and Villa Savoye really resonated with me. The curved ramps take you from one space to another culminating in a rooftop garden filled with sunlight and stillness. It taught me spaces don’t have to be perfect. UNTAPPED MATERIAL: Brick has a sense of permanence. I'm dreaming of the right client, budget and site to use it.

clockwise from top: michael stavaridis, courtesy rene gonzalez architects; bill timmerman; alex hayden; joshua mchugh.

BRIAN SAWYER ⊲

New York | sawyerberson.com

SPOTLIGHT: In our projects, we deliberately study the effects of the sun on a space, yet there are moments when a sunbeam, calculated for arrival in a specific room, offers an even greater result. Those are the best happy accidents. CASE STUDY: We're designing a home in Tucson that embodies our passion for framing views, capturing light and revealing spatial character. The site has a stellar visual and physical connection to an iconic mountain range. With its well-positioned sight lines, the home showcases the essence of its setting. BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER: We strive for cozy, comfortable spaces regardless of the square footage. High ceilings will always be popular but it’s better to focus on proportion rather than height.

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING RYAN BOLLOM AND DK OSSEO-ASARE

SOUTHERN CHARM: The South is full of inspiration. Perhaps the most celebrated house in all of Atlanta is known as Swan House. Built in 1928 by one of the country's preeminent architects, Philip Shutze, it’s an icon of classic design. Charleston is also one of the most magical places. Its casual sophistication, haunting presence of history among a bustling modern city, and its quintessential Southern feeling are unparalleled. My favorites are the Miles Brewton House and Drayton Hall. IN THE WORKS: We are in the midst of a large new estate in the Georgia Low Country, based on precedents from some of my favorite South Carolina houses. I’m taking inspiration from the past, but making it new and relevant in a way that doesn’t feel like a museum. BIDDING ADIEU: Openconcept floor plans are on their way out. People are returning to the notion of rooms being rooms. Intimacy and coziness are hallmarks of great living spaces.

OONAGH RYAN ⊲

Los Angeles | oonaghryan.com

WANDERLUST: I love Barcelona for its sheer variety of buildings—from Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà and Frank Gehry’s Golden Fish to Richard Meier’s Museum of Contemporary Art and EMBT’s Santa Caterina Market. But my favorite is the Barcelona Pavilion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the International Exposition. Its sleek, elegant design combined with rich natural materials is a study in simplicity; it’s the essence of architectural modernism. HEART OF THE HOME: Invest in a high-quality kitchen countertop. Kitchens are the focal point for family life. A good countertop should be durable, tell a story and stand the test of time. The island we designed for our Manhattan Beach Bowen house (shown) is custom terrazzo inspired by a handful of pebbles our client found on the beach. We blended a mix of colored stones in a sandy matrix to achieve the natural look. HAVING A MOMENT: Seventies-style chic décor is back en vogue—think velvets, geometric patterns, warm palettes, funky textures and abstract silhouettes.

SUSTAINABLE STYLE: Our goal is to maximize design impact while keeping resource consumption and environmental impact to a minimum, so we prefer to work with natural and renewable materials like wood and bamboo, and metals like steel and copper, that can be recycled. SUCCESSFUL ARCHITECTURE: The best spaces offer unexpected moments, new forms of interaction, and ultimately challenge us to engage with life, the environment and each other in different ways. DREAM BUILDERS: We both started out as engineers but realized we wanted to pursue architecture after we finished our undergraduate degrees. We have a natural attraction to rigorous technical precision, while also feeling a need to solve open-ended problems that require creative solutions. Aiming to make the world more beautiful, we find that architecture ultimately becomes about building physical harmony.

MASTERS IN THE HANDS OF MODERN ARTISANS, AN ANCIENT TECHNIQUE STILL ROCKS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING

Both made of scagliola, Moss & Lam’s W1 Mount table and artist Melissa Vogley Woods’ Untitled Form 4 sculpture celebrates this historic medium by incorporating sculptural forms and modern lines.

create elaborate inlays. “A liquid mix of scagliola is inserted into engravings that have been made with hammer and chisel in a slab of marble or stone,” he says. “When dry, it is rubbed smooth with water and pumice and polished with wax, oil, lacquers and stone.” The process sounds relatively simple, yet learning how to make scagliola involves years of study and practice. Woods, for example, spent time traveling around Europe and learning from experts there. “It’s not like there is one way or one recipe,” she says. “And in Italy, the scagliola is like pasta—every region has a slightly different way of making it.” The material’s unique, moldable nature attracted artist Deborah Moss, co-founder of Moss & Lam in Canada. Moss, who learned about scagliola as an art history student, started

Looking at the majestic domed ceilings, ornate paneled walls and stately colonnades of 17th-century Italian basilicas, many people marvel at what seems to be colorful marble in the architecture. They might be surprised to know that what looks like natural stone is actually a hardened mixture of gypsum or plaster, pigments and sometimes glue. It’s a material called scagliola, a decorative surface that’s been fooling the eye for centuries. Though celebrated as an art today, scagliola started as a way to save time and money. “Artisans began using it to solve logistical problems,” explains Melissa Vogley Woods, an Ohio artist who creates scagliola sculptures. “Real marble was costly, heavy and hard to install. It was easier to use scagliola to create the same effect.” Scagliola specialist Mark Burston of Hayles & Howe, a British firm specializing in the material, says the use of the material as we know it today began in Munich in 1603 and spread across Europe, arriving in Britain in the early 1800s and then the United States in the 19th century. Although not quarried from the earth like marble, the creation of scagliola is not without effort. “You begin with some pigments, water and plaster, mix them into a dough-like consistency and press into molds to attain the shapes required,” Burston says. “After demolding, its then infilled and sanded several times to achieve a lustrous finish.” Alessandro Bianchi—whose family’s business, Bianco Bianchi in Florence, Italy, has been producing scagliola works since the 1960s—says the material can also be used to

larsentextiles.com

using it in furniture design to create an element of surprise. “I love the classic feeling it gives our contemporary pieces,” she says. In her studio, artisans use silicone molds and traditional scagliola methods to achieve the geometric shapes and marble-like surfaces found in the Playtime Series, a set of colorful modern tables. British interior designer Francis Sultana also uses the material to add an enduring nature to his work. “My clients require pieces of furniture that stand the test of time,” he says. “They want looks that will work in 10, 20 and 50 years and, for me, scagliola has proved that it remains en vogue from one century to the next.” The designer also uses scagliola for one of the reasons early craftspeople did—noting that its lightweight nature is a technical plus. Though its use waned for a time in the 19th century, Moss predicts the look of scagliola has legs in the 21st century and beyond as a new generation rediscovers the ancient practice. And though many are experimenting with boldly hued pigments, Moss believes the way scagliola is created will likely remain the same. “It’s not a process that can really be automated—it requires a lot of hand mixing and hand sanding to achieve the best results,” she says. “It gives me goosebumps to think of how the process remains unchanged; to be part of that unbroken lineage is humbling.”

“Scagliola is having a new impulse in design,” says Alessandro Bianchi of Bianco Bianchi. “Its gradations of colors and it plasticity are very suitable for contemporary drawings and shapes, and it works well with metal.” An interior vignette of scagliola work in Italy (top right) and a set of trays of scagliola and brass (top left) made in collaboration with Studio Blanco, both by Bianco Bianchi, show the continued relevance of this durable material. The Charles console and Venise side table by Francis Sultana also exhibit a playful, yet chic approach to designing furnishings made of scagliola.

nspired by the cast-iron birds that sit atop Grand Central Station, Harry Winston’s recent New York Collection, which includes diamond-andplatinum Eagle earrings, pays homage to the city’s built environment, where Winston lived, worked and fell in love. Similar to Winston’s creative team, other jewelry designers are following suit and finding inspiration in notable international architectural structures. The artistic forces behind the ancient Egyptian faience emerald-and-sapphire Hemmerle necklace looked to the exterior forms and interior drawings of Egyptian temples. And Jean Prounis and Temple St. Clair both turned to Buddhist stupas, or meditation structures, as architectural muses. “I was inspired by my visit to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an China,” says Prounis of her Pagoda earrings with South Sea Pearl bases and multi-story domes of granulated 22-karat gold. The Taj Mahal, perhaps the greatest example of India’s chhatris architecture, played a large role in the vision for both Sanjay Kasliwal’s Jaali cuff and Surendra Saboo’s sapphire, opal and diamond Aura ring. “I wanted this piece to look like the night sky above the Taj Mahal with a blue moon center punctuated by brilliant stars in the distance,” says Saboo. The ornate nature of these exquisite creations proves that incorporating traditional design elements, especially ones from significant and timeworn structures, will most certainly never go out of style.

CELLAR NOTES MARSEILLE

At the center of Seattle’s bustling Melrose Market, Marseille is a restaurant, bar and bottle shop specializing in natural wines. Conceived by Chef Brandin Myett as a dose of European cafe life, the 20-seat spot is perfect for sipping coffee or enjoying a glass of wine with friends. In collaboration with Brackish, the furniture design brand behind neighboring retail store Glasswing, the space was designed to maximize light and human connection. Cafe lighting was installed, white Venetian plaster was applied to walls, blackened steel and light wood was used on seating, and tables were topped with reflective white marble. marseillefoodandwine.com

ROSEMARY STAFFORD Called a “botanical innovator” by her clients, Rosemary Stafford is an itinerant florist who creates lush living art on every scale, from modest wedding bouquets to a massive eucalyptus chandelier hovering above a grand piano. How did you begin? In college I happened upon a floral job, where I learned early to trust in my own aesthetic. I also worked in floral while living in Australia, which gave me access to new native textures, thus beginning my love for instinctive, traveling design. On botanical innovation: I start where my eye naturally falls, in a space that cries out for an influx of something wild. Bold statements are everything. Of course, it’s preferable if there is infrastructure in place to support my kooky dreams. Eye-catching trends: This past year we’ve seen bold tropical colors, sprayed metallic or pastel elements, and the previously poo-pooed carnations, mums and other ‘cheap’ flowers make a major resurgence. Anything can be cool again if there is total commitment from the designer. Global impact: Common practice has been to ship flowers nationally and internationally, and the carbon footprint of our floral addiction is major. As a farmer, forager and traveler, I dream of working with Richard Branson. He is dedicated to environmental policy and encourages people to deal with what’s local. Tricks of the trade: Hot water for any vase arrangement is key. It seems wrong, but you’ll be surprised. rosemarystafford.com 108 / luxesource.com

KENGO KUMA: PORTLAND JAPANESE GARDEN In the spring of 2017, the 50-year-old Portland Japanese Garden—one of the most authentic gardens of its kind outside of the Asian nation—underwent a major expansion and popularly received renovation. Famed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma won an international competition and was commissioned to lead the $30 million venture, his first public project in the United States. His ideas combined authentic Japanese craftsmanship and sophisticated new technology. Three acres were added to the 9-acre site and a “cultural village,” consisting of a trio of low-slung buildings, was situated around a courtyard. Fans of gorgeous greenery can bring a portion of Kuma’s work home with them in the new book Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden, which immortalizes and celebrates the stunning outdoor space through eye-catching photographs and illuminating text. The striking tome is authored by Botond Bognár, a professor and renowned scholar of Japanese architecture, and his son, Balázs Bognár, a partner at Kuma’s firm and the garden’s project architect, and features a foreword by Kuma himself. The book does “an excellent job of articulating the cultural and historical importance of nature within Japanese culture and how that has informed Kuma’s architecture,” says Lisa Christy of the Portland Japanese Garden. “His sensitivity to natural surroundings makes his architecture accessible, beautiful, and, of course, the perfect complement to a garden like this.” rizzoliusa.com 110 / luxesource.com

Current inspiration: Australia. The minimalist, modern aesthetic is breaking boundaries with interesting architectural moves and unexpected design details. Most memorable project? I love this question! It’s like choosing which of your kids you love most, which is impossible. If I had to choose, I’d say the Arch Cape beach house. It was for a special, longtime client who gave us full permission to design the house top-to-bottom. It turned out spectacular. Every tile selection, cabinet knob and furniture piece is perfectly suited. How do you define luxury? In the words of Coco Chanel, “Luxury begins where necessity ends.” Dream collaboration: Designing a custom home with my husband, David Horning of MOA Architecture. We work so well together. What’s next for JHL Design? We’re wrapping up a unique, high-end office project in downtown Portland. It has a minimalist vibe with a nod to Japanese style, as our clients work largely with Japanese customers. With soft, woven textiles, rich wood and textured stone, it’s going to be a relaxing, welcoming interior. The landscape of office design is evolving to reflect the way people work, so it’s an exciting time to design offices. jhldesign.com

MEET the MAKER LEE RHODES

Back in the mid 1990s, Lee Rhodes, a 32-yearold mother of three young children, was battling lung cancer. One day during that time, she placed a tea light candle into a handblown glass votive holder and found the effect “calming and peaceful and colorful,” she says. Thus was born Glassybaby, the company she founded in 2001, which creates elegant, delicate votives in hundreds of hues. “The way light plays and dances with glass makes it an experiential form of design,” she says. But Glassybaby provides much more than attractive accessories and healing light therapy. While undergoing chemotherapy, Rhodes was dismayed to learn that some of her fellow patients couldn’t afford the basic costs associated with receiving treatment, like hiring a babysitter or paying for parking. So she made sure that Glassybaby would be a money-raising as well as a money-making platform, earmarking 10 percent of revenues for charitable causes. 112 / luxesource.com

Thanks to early publicity from fans like Martha Stewart and investments from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Apple’s Laurene Powell Jobs, the enterprise blossomed quickly. Glassybaby currently employs 80 artisans in its Seattle and Berkeley, California facilities. Handmade drinking glasses have been added to its repertoire, which is available online or via eight brick-andmortar boutiques all located on the West Coast. To date, Glassybaby has directed more than $9 million to nonprofit organizations that support struggling cancer patients, in addition to some that help animals and protect the planet. As Rhodes, now a three-time cancersurvivor, looks to the future, she says: “I’d like to bring the colorful and calming nature of Glassybaby to hospitals and transform those places from cold and clinical to warm and friendly. We’re working on creating the perfect electric tea light for just that reason.” Votives with a motive, indeed. glassybaby.com

years IT ALL STARTED WITH THE PERFECT VELVET CHAIR John Bray, Vanguard’s eighth employee and current CEO, says it best: “Vanguard is referred to as a family company—not because it is family-owned—but because our most basic core value has always been to treat one another with the dignity and appreciation of a family member.” Since its inception in 1969— in a modest facility with a mere two employees and single velvet chair—Vanguard has credited its success to its uncompromising values and culture. With a mission to be the industry’s most customer-centric company and a vision to enrich people’s lives through custom-made furniture, Vanguard has established itself as a leading manufacturer in the industry. Celebrated for its American craftsmanship, customization, exquisite finishes and unparalleled quality, the brand has grown to over 600 associates and is currently operating out of six manufacturing buildings in Hickory, North Carolina; a 40,000-square-foot showroom in High Point, North Carolina; and a new manufacturing location in Hillsville, Virginia. In its 50th anniversary year, and for the next five-plus decades, Vanguard will continue to trailblaze the custom furniture space. Andy Bray, Vanguard’s president, looks to the future: “There are certain attributes of the human condition that simply cannot change, and there is a high degree of likelihood that future generations will still be sleeping in beds, sharing meals around dining tables, and sitting on a comfortable chair or sofa for a moment of quiet repose. Whatever the future brings, Vanguard will adapt to be there for our customers.”

TURKISH DELIGHT Brooklyn-based designer Feyza Kemahlioglu drew from her Turkish heritage to conceptualize her Pillars of Meerschaum collection, including this fixture dubbed Amber Treasure. Crafted from meerschaum—a soft white clay material found in Eskisehir, a small city in Turkey—the intricately detailed piece is perforated, allowing tiny beams of light to emanate through it. WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS

Las Vegas Market has its finger on the pulse of what’s next and best in the home decor and design world. Here, four interior designers and “Ahead of the Curve” panelists share their 2019 trend forecasts and favorite things to do while visiting The Entertainment Capital of the World for Market each summer. Las Vegas Market is open to the trade only, July 28 – August 1, 2019. Register online at lasvegasmarket.com.

TACTILE FINISHES

“Mixing finishes is a timeless trend! Brass and bronze have been industry favorites for quite some time, but I can’t get enough of the latest additions, including texture-rich plaster, matte black, cement and antiqued silver.” WHAT TO SEE “Cirque du Soleil and live music performances always top the list, but you’re even more likely to find me donning a robe in The Spa at Encore.”

NOIR, Mala Chair

Arteriors Home, Vandana Chandelier

BRITANY SIMON BSDH Scottsdale, AZ

70’S STYLE

“From the runway to interiors, designers are bringing the ’70s back. I am seeing warm hues, vibrant colors, and the mix of bold patterns with geometrics, animal prints, checkers, and plaids being used in textiles. I also anticipate more creativity with shape and form across all market categories—something I’ve been craving for a while!”

Weiman, Isabella High Left Swivel Chair

WHAT TO SEE “I love to get together with my designer friends from other states while I am in town for Market. On my next trip, I am also dying to catch a Lady Gaga show!”

BRONZE IS THE NEW BRASS

“It was inevitable, but the glamour of polished brass is slowly being surpassed by a raw and less refined, honed-bronze finish. It’s a stronger, more confident look. We think it looks amazing on everything, from the plane of a coffee table, to a crisp-edge millwork detail and decorative home accessory.” WHAT TO SEE “I’m looking forward to exploring the food, drink and design scene that’s exploded in the last decade. And maybe book an Elvis brunch—the proper thing to do, right?”

NATURE-INSPIRED ACCESSORIES

“I’m seeing a movement toward statement pieces that singularly carry a space. As we are craving softer living and clean, chic interiors, peaceful art that does not overwhelm a room is trending. These pieces possess organic appeal and naturally spark intrigue—making them both meaningful, focal point accessories in the home.”

Blue Ocean Traders, Polished Agate

WHAT TO SEE “After a long day at Market, happy hour is a must for my design team. Our go-to spots include The Chandelier Lounge at The Cosmopolitan and Commonwealth.”

Waterworks’ Architectonics tile lines this Southport, Connecticut, kitchen and adjacent dining area designed by Barbara Sallick and her team. A Wolf range sits below a Henry Pot Filler and Pullman hood with Whisper Hardware by Waterworks.

SECOND ACT

“I never ever thought I would move,” Barbara Sallick explains, but within 30 seconds of walking in the front door of her new home in Southport, Connecticut, she fell in love. Soon, Sallick and her husband, who co-founded the luxury kitchen and bath company Waterworks 40 years ago, were bidding adieu to the address they had lived at for half a century and contemplating a kitchen remodel opportunity that looked much different from the one they had undertaken as a young family. “When it came down to it, it just seemed like the right thing to do,” Barbara notes of her new kitchen, “and what’s more, over time, I’ve learned a thing or two.” waterworks.com What was important to you when designing this kitchen? The overriding conversation I had with myself was about how I would feel in the space and how I would create a kitchen I loved. To achieve this, I knew it had to be warm, friendly, easy and accessible. I feel privileged to live this more casual lifestyle, which is really the way many of us operate in the kitchen today. Your treatment of the wall tile is so striking. I love tile and it’s my thing, so I wasn’t going to just put up a backsplash! I tiled the entire kitchen because I like the idea of grids and how they add a textural component but can also make a room feel larger when a wider format style is used. Because this entire area isn’t too big, I wanted to make sure the dining and operational spaces were tied together in some way and the tile achieved this. 196 / luxesource.com

How did you choose the hardware? This was a very difficult, deliberate decision and you can see that all of the pulls and lights are unlacquered brass. Yet, I chose matte nickel for the faucet because it aligns visually with the stainless steel sink and stove. This gave me a chance to mix metals in places that felt logical. Clockwise from top: Belden cabinetry by Waterworks is hand-painted in Whisper, a pale gray that creates an airy aesthetic at the top while the lower cabinetry is done in Midnight to anchor the space. Waterworks’ Cushing and Portsmouth Pulls in unlacquered brass pop against the navy cabinetry and drawer dividers help organize essentials.

Sallick chose marble brackets instead of the usual metal to continue the beauitful Arabescato veining in all aspects of the space. A small painting provides an unexpected dose of pretty while a Marvel wine refrigerator, Henry Bar Faucet and Normandy Copper Bar Sink complete the nook.

Known for its customization, Monogram worked with designer Richard Anuszkiewicz to create an opulent bar space where the appliances are clad in EcoDomo’s rich chocolate brown embossed croc patent leather. The Circuit Chef kitchen sink from Elkay features multiple sizes, several accessories and two tiers that allow for everything from washing and drying to cutting and straining to be personalized to how you like to work in the kitchen.

Launched earlier this year by the brains behind La Cornue, new luxury bath company Bassines drew inspiration from traditional French copper cookware and the art of metalwork design when creating these sleek stainless steel washbasins (above). Handcrafted in British Columbia by sculptor Christopher Shannon, the Vettis Concrete faucet by Brizo (right) has a wonderful, tactile feel and is a true work of art with a limited production run of 500.

EMILY FARNHAM

MATTHEW QUINN

Some may think the openkitchen concept is about to expire, but I believe the informal layout of this plan reflects the way we live and entertain today, so it’s not going away anytime soon. Try as you might, you’ll never get your guests out of the kitchen so it’s best to make the space more inclusive and open. Panel-ready integrated appliances are a clever way to improve optics and also create a quiet backdrop to let the kitchen design take center stage.

Color is in! While timelessness can be a valuable component of kitchen design, bright shades can certainly be brought into this space without painting the cabinetry the color of the year. I like to use bold hues in pantries or sculleries which can include wallpapering or painting inside glass cabinets as well as on the ceiling. Don’t forget about adding a pop of color with a beautiful range, too! It all just makes life in the kitchen more fun.

FRANK PONTERIO

YOUNG HUH

If you know me, you know I love to cook and entertain. So one of my favorite trends in the kitchen is that people are now cooking together; it’s all about being social! It used to be that guests would come over for a dinner party and stand around while you entertain but now everyone is involved. With more people jockeying for the same space, I think a corner sink is smart, efficient and a total no-brainer for incorporating into a more social kitchen.

While white and gray kitchens are still quite popular, we’re going to see a movement toward color and texture in cabinetry, surfaces and tile, all while continuing the ideas of seamless integration and architectural minimalism. Induction cooktops are also becoming more popular because they not only cut cooking times and emissions, but they look perfect in integrated spaces. The seamless effect of an induction cooktop flush with the countertop really lets the clean lines of the kitchen sing.

“It’s a cornucopia of visual delights,” says designer Amanda Nisbet of the deep peacock-blue living room she created for her New York clients. “Like installation art, the lacquer changes during the day, making things even more interesting.”

MAX IMPACT Color trends come and go, but the most recent approach to enlivening our homes has taken on a defiant spirit that has us reconsidering familiar, everyday norms. These highly considered spaces are shaped as much by personality as they are by beauty and function. Challenging preconceived notions of color and employing a new approach is what makes this kaleidoscopic trend so stimulating. Suddenly, a world with endless possibilities has opened. Now, go explore.

Amanda Nisbet doesn’t shy away from bold ideas, so when New York art collector-clients said, “More is more is more,” she ran with it. “We couldn’t be wishy-washy in holding eclectic pieces together,” says the designer. Nisbet upholstered the entryway with shimmering leather embellished with drips of gold by Christianson Lee Studios. “Everything had to stand its ground, so we did a lavender ottoman and a purple Kyle Bunting carpet. And I couldn’t have a white ceiling!” she says. “The room is majestic, sumptuous and lures you in.” amandanisbetdesign.com

“Specific colors and patterns weren’t important, but creating the emotional response was,” says Dane Pressner, director of design for D’Aquino Monaco, of a cottage he designed in Snedens Landing, New York. The turquoise Elitis bamboo wallcovering was the starting point, with a Josef Frank floral chair fabric inspiring the rest of the palette, which Pressner used to color block the space. “We love when wild elements get paired together; instead of becoming crazier, they find harmony with one another,” he says. daquinomonaco.com

“Our observation over the last few years is that there has been a move away from hard silver finishes and clear glass toward more natural finishes such as antique brass,” says Emma Finch, director of London-based lighting firm Hector Finch. “The emerald glass gives the Sophie chandelier a warmth and glamour that can be used in contemporary or traditional interiors,” she adds. Inspired by an original 1920s design, the chandelier is a nod to the English company’s early history as antiques dealers. hectorfinch.com

When designer Christine Markatos Lowe was asked to transform a masculine library into a feminine space for a fashion-forward client in Santa Monica, California, she went right to a sunny de Gournay wallpaper she had spotted on a trip to New York. “The gilt paper really sets a formal tone,” she says. “This is a room meant purely for entertaining, often where dessert is served or for intimate parties hosted by the wife.” Decorative accents highlight the chinoiserie scene’s jewel tones, while neutral furnishings keep it fresh and ethereal. “As a room for special occasions, the space called for special-occasion wallpaper!” remarks the designer. markatosdesign.com

Pattern Play “My client likes cheery colors,” says designer Kirill Istomin of a home in Moscow. “She’d say, ‘As the weather isn’t great here, it’s a way of bringing sunshine into your life.’ ” For the family room, Istomin chose a Clarence House sofa fabric, repeating its circular pattern in the rug and the vintage wicker mirrors that “absorb and balance the colors.” Echoing the rectilinear forms of the mirrored bookcase is a colorful custom media cabinet that Istomin playfully calls “an homage to Mondrian.” kirillistomin.com

“Cozy and quiet” was the ultimate direction for the library-bar Oliver M. Furth designed for a couple’s new Los Angeles pied-à-terre. “They aren’t afraid of color, so this was an opportunity to push things,” says Furth, who painted the Phillip Jeffries grass cloth a rich teal while extending it to the ceiling. “It unexpectedly becomes a neutral,” he adds. An oak cabinet with chartreuse Edelman leather panels hides a refrigerator and a “healthy dose of black” grounds the entertaining space. A statement painting by Delphine Courtillot adds the final touch that effortlessly ties all vibrant hues together. Color us impressed. olivermfurth.com

UNIQUE RENOS IN THE PNW + Doggie baths + Laundry rooms + Bars + Coffee stations + Fireplaces

In key areas of the home, such as the kitchen, and in smaller spaces, like foyers and entry halls, large porcelain slabs and distinctive tiles are making a big statement. Bedrosians Tile & Stone puts the spotlight on these innovative materials and more, with new, eye-catching designs, colors and patterns. “Large porcelain slabs are increasingly popular for kitchen islands, offering consistency of color and pattern, durability and ease of maintenance. You can fabricate these slabs to look thick and rich with a waterfall edge that is gorgeous,” the team says. For foyers and entryways, the Bedrosians team suggests a striking scheme that is purposefully planned out to flow seamlessly to the adjoining spaces. “Also, if there’s a staircase in the house, this can become the centerpiece of its design depending on bold color and material choices,” they add.

CLEFT PAINTING COMPANY 206.285.2173 | cleftpaintingcompany.com

High-caliber exterior and interior painting can transform everything from rooms to moods to the selling price of a home. “Quality is always in style,” says Bryce Barnes, founder of Cleft Painting Company. “We are seeing a wider understanding that quality of preparation, level of finish on millwork and doors, clean-cut lines and great colors are essential to creating spaces that stand the test of time.” Adopting a value-driven approach, Cleft Painting Company centers its work on three key principles. First—and above all else—is continuity. “We work to produce a consistent level of quality throughout a home and on all exterior finishes,” Barnes says. Second, is intent—being purposeful in regard to color and product placement. Third is coherence. “It’s imperative to connect the painted surfaces to the surrounding interior materials and furnishings,” he says.

What are some surprising or unique renovations homeowners are asking for today? We are spending more time on color and product design, delivering uncompromising results with new, environmentally friendly and natural products— plaster, concrete and wax. We use zero or low-VOC products when possible and are continually experimenting with water-based urethanes and hybrid oils to produce smooth, durable finishes on interior millwork.

TRENDS IN RENOVATION

DME CONSTRUCTION 425.451.4967 | dmeconstruction.com

Over the years DME Construction has learned how to successfully harmonize project objectives, such as design aesthetic, budget and schedule to achieve a homeowner’s vision. More than ever before, open-space concepts are the epicenter of family. “We gather to create lasting memories through conversation and laughter while devouring handcrafted food,” says David Elwell, president of DME Construction. “Creating intimate, yet crowd-worthy spaces are a proven recipe for a well-designed, happy home.” In addition, he notes, master and bedroom en suites are growing in popularity. “Today’s homeowners are willing to give up square footage in the main areas to build private room suites that allow for spa-like baths featuring soaking basins, rain showers, large vanities, radiant floors and walk-in closets. This current pursuit seems to provide a respite from our hectic lifestyles.”

CALL IT A COMEBACK Wallpaper is making a huge comeback, being used to create an accent wall or other statement-making area of the home. Suppliers are also coming out with some amazing tile designs and mosaics that can be utilized in backsplashes for kitchens and bathrooms. These materials make a big impact in small spaces in any setting.

2

“The key to a successful renovation is proper planning. Budget and schedule are sensitive and very much interconnected. If one phase of work changes, it affects the other. If a home has ‘good bones,’ a client’s budget might be better spent upgrading millwork and paint scheme. However, if budget and schedule permit, it might be best to take a blank canvas approach,” Elwell says.

1. The kitchen received a makeover in the form of new paint, countertops, fixtures, hardware, glass inserts in the cabinetry, and upgraded appliances. 2. The home office, located off the entryway, originally had dark walnut woodwork and cabinetry. “To keep the look light and airy, we painted the woodwork white with decorative accent colors,” Elwell says. WINE STORAGE, PERFECTED SIGNATURE KITCHEN SUITE UNVEILS THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE- AND HUMIDITY-CONTROLLED SPACE. Whether you’re a sommelier or the only thing you know about wine is that you love to drink it, you’ll want a dedicated space for your wine collection. Signature Kitchen Suite’s new collection of integrated column wine refrigerators pays deference to their subject’s earth-cooled subterranean origins with Wine Cave Technology™, designed for precise wine preservation. Carefully tailored to mimic the ideal environment of historic wine caves, the exclusive design reduces vibration, minimizes temperature fluctuations, limits light passing through and locks in humidity. Key features include Wi-Fi monitoring, providing owners peace of mind that their wine collection is in its set storage settings; touch display lighting (LED lights activated by tapping the door or with a mobile app); independent temperature zones, which can be set between 41° F and 64° F; dark-tinted, triple-pane glass for protection against damaging UV light; and the integration of another Signature Kitchen Suite innovation: the True Sommelier™ app. Powered by Wine Ringʼs patented machine learning, this is the first software that learns preferences and makes wine recommendations.

FOR THE OENOPHILE, NO VIBRATIONS ARE GOOD VIBRATIONS. Vibration is a primary impediment to wine storage and preservation, causing chemical imbalances that affect the quality, flavors, aromas and texture. In addition to causing wine to lose its flavor, new undesirable qualities are added to a wine when it’s shaken. Signature Kitchen Suite has designed their wine column refrigerators with a major emphasis on reducing vibration. An inverter linear compressor and metal interior help minimize the vibration to less than 2 gal (cm/s²) and precise temperature controls to maintain the lowest fluctuations among leading brands.

The NEW MINIMALIST INFORMED CONSUMERS AND A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS ARE CULTIVATING A LESS-IS-MORE, STREAMLINED KITCHEN. The kitchen of the future is a microcosm of the new age of minimalism. Essentially, people just want less stuff, giving rise to multidisciplinary products in multifunctional spaces. Kitchen shelves, cabinets and work stations packed with elaborate, redundant and bulky appliances are being replaced with drawers of fresh vegetables, bowls of organic fruit and natural ingredients for easy-to-prepare meals, while built-in cooking equipment is increasingly more flexible to prepare food in the best possible way, with numerous functions that eliminate unnecessary appliances. The pioneers at Signature Kitchen Suite are at the forefront of this paradigm shift. Their 48-inch dual-fuel pro range, for example, is the answer to greater flexibility and precision in cooking, with built-in sous vide, induction and gas all on the cooktop—a first of its kind.

SOUS VIDING YOUR WAY TO STEAK MASTERY THE SECRET TO PERFECTLY COOKED STEAK IS FINALLY WITHIN THE REACH OF HOME COOKS. For curious cooks who ever have wondered how high-end restaurants get every steak right, every time, it is most likely because they cook sous vide. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite—whose dual-fuel pro range features the industry’s first built-in sous vide and whose partnerships with the Culinary Research and Education Academy (CREA) and Cuisine Solutions are promoting the everyday use of this culinary method—home chefs can elevate their perfectly cooked proteins to another level. To simplify this versatile technique, we asked sous vide expert AJ Schaller, Executive Chef at CREA, to break down what it takes to cook a great steak at home.

1

Where to start. As with any other sous vide food, be sure to start with quality ingredients. Searing the steak in advance helps the flavor reach the core of the meat and requires less time to sear when you are done cooking sous vide.

2

What to use. Spices and marinades are great, and you only need a fraction of the amount used in traditional cooking. Keep in mind that ingredients such as tomato, ginger or any acids in your pouch will continue to soften the texture of proteins, raw or cooked.

3

How long. Time has an important effect on texture and flavor when cooking sous vide. Lean meats such as steaks are done cooking once the desired core temperature is reached, which can take around 30 minutes.

4

While entertaining. If you know how your guests prefer their steak, consider cooking them in advance, then chill and reheat when you are ready. This helps retain flavor and juiciness.

5

Why the chefs love it. Sous vide takes the guesswork out of cooking items to the proper temperature for best quality and flavor.

The Art of CHEESEMAKING THE ALCHEMIC, ARTISANAL JOURNEY IS THE DESTINATION. The countless cheeses—each made with only milk, rennet, bacterial cultures and salt—reflect the diversity of the contexts in which they are produced. Cheese offers a rich, “living” connection to the world. An English cheesemaker might make a firm-bodied, mild-flavored cheddar; whereas a cheesemaker from Italy would probably make a hard, dry parmesan, requiring two years to develop its sharp flavor. A cheesemaker from Southern France may make Roquefort, a cheese with a piquant flavor and white curd speckled with bluegreen mold. Steeped in tradition and regional nuance and grounded in ecological principles and biological science—yet natural and intuitive—cheesemaking is equally technical and artistic. From culture propagation to rennet coagulation to affinage, hone your palate and expand your knowledge with these takeaway tenets.

CHEESE DOESN’T LIKE TO BE TOO COLD. The perfect temperature varies depending on whom you ask, but usually ranges between 40º F and 53º F. Most home refrigerators are colder than this. As a solution, Signature Kitchen Suite has introduced the 36-inch built-in French door refrigerator with a five-mode convertible middle drawer that has distinct temperature zones for preserving deli-worthy fare at the correct temperature. The ingenious drawer’s temperature zones also include chilled wine, meats and seafood, beverage and freezer.

THE FUNDAMENTALS: Culture. Warm your milk to the right temperature, add

1

the right mix of microbes (bacteria, yeasts and molds) and let them do their thing. bonus: Sous vide the cheese for precise control of the temperature.

2 3

Coagulate. Add rennet and wait until the milk turns into a gel-like network. Use a medicine dropper. Cut. Using a long knife, slice the firm network into morsels of the right size and shape. note: The smaller the initial pieces, the drier (and more ageable) the cheese will be. And vice versa.

4 5

Stir. Mix the curds to expel moisture and increase firmness. A slotted spoon does the trick. Heat. If you’re making a hard, aged cheese, cook the curds to make them even sturdier. A kitchen thermometer is recommended.

6

Drain. Remove the liquid whey (the watery part of milk) from the solid curd by straining. You’ll need a colander and cheesecloth.

7

Form and press. Add your curds to the right type of form and, if necessary, apply weight to expel more whey. Buy cheese forms from a supplier or repurpose plastic containers. You’ll also want to get a draining mat.

8

Salt. If you haven’t already mixed it into the curd before molding, rub salt on the outside of the wheel or place your cheese into a brine solution.

9

Age. Manipulate the development of your final product with the right blend of temperature, moisture and time.

In Orono, Minnesota, a design team took advantage of the home’s architectural elements and used masonry stone as the foundation for the palette to bring the outside in.

With architecture by Osterhaus McCarthy, this Chicago residence features a floating central staircase, anchored by a walnut wall that extends to the skylight. Oak floors and white walls reinforce the lightness of the architecture.

Eastern INFLUENCE ON LAKE WASHINGTON, A HOME INSPIRED BY JAPAN SPEAKS TO ITS OWNERS’ PASSIONS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON LEITZ

The entrance to a Seattle home by architect Stuart Silk flows directly into the living area. Designers Melinda Sechrist and Louanne Low chose understated furnishings. Jiun Ho armchairs in Sandra Jordan wool join a Liaigre coffee table from Susan Mills Showroom. The rug is from Driscoll Robbins Fine Carpets. The artwork above the fireplace is by Morris Graves. W

e wanted the house to be put into the garden, not the other way around,” Spencer Frazer says of the distinct vision he relayed to architect Stuart Silk during their initial meeting. That was just one of Spencer’s requirements for his future home on a wooded lot overlooking Lake Washington. It also needed to be, he says, “a showcase for my bonsai and specimen trees. It had to have a Japanese-1950s flavor, transparent but still homey, and be one story, without steps. And it had to have an entrance sequence that was transformational from the moment one came through the outer gate.” In short, Spencer, who shares the residence with his wife, explained, “It had to be a spiritual haven.” Undaunted, Silk accepted the challenge, noting, “We wanted this home to capture the essence of traditional Japanese buildings without mimicking familiar imagery or details. It’s a reinterpretation through the lens of a modern Pacific Northwest sensibility.” To fulfill Spencer’s many wishes, Silk, joined by former associates John Adams and Karen Chiu, says he “conceived the home as a collection of one-story pavilions with the garden at its center.” By flattening the sloping site, the architects were able to place all of the structures on a single elevation and connect them via a single covered path. “The walkway runs most of the length of the property, knitting the pavilions together,” Silk says. Three linked structures containing the primary living spaces occupy the lakefront end of the site, while the fourth building, with Spencer’s studio, a gym and a guest suite, is positioned near the street. Hipped roofs clad in zinc shingles evoke the feel of old roofs.

Maximizing daylight, Silk raised each roof on thin steel posts to allow a continuous band of clerestory windows. “They seem to defy gravity,” he says. General contractor Doug Payne, the principal/project manager, agrees: “You wonder how in the world those are supported.” Payne, who worked with general contractor Thom Schultz, still marvels at the level of detail he and his team achieved to integrate the structural elements of the home with the aesthetic desired by the architect and client. “Not all of those details are readily apparent,” he says, “but as you spend time in the home, you begin to realize how well everything was thought out.” The extraordinary collaboration continued inside the abode, with attention paid to the function of each space. The couple entertains frequently, so cedar plank ceilings were installed to absorb sound. A media unit in the family room incorporates Spencer’s desk, giving him a view and plenty of drawer space. And the minimalist kitchen belies the amount of storage it contains. Hidden within the walls,

there are even zig-zag tunnels that allow the couple’s rescue cats to roam covertly. Supporting Silk’s rhythmic, craft-centric lead, designers Melinda Sechrist and Louanne Low, along with their associates Pooja Jain and Juan Moreira, brought in several touches of warmth to reflect the wife’s taste. “We wanted to create spaces that felt cocoonlike,” says Sechrist. For softness, they chose alpaca fabrics for the living room. For color, they pulled hues from the clients’ artwork, including a deep blue from a painting for the dining room chairs and a rust tone that also references a maple tree for the family room sofa. In the master bedroom, they added a cozy reading nook by the fireplace. Private spaces for the couple also figured into the scheme for the house. The wife received a quiet office at the end of the bedroom pavilion where she could work on crafts. “She wanted the space to have a simple feel,” says Low. Spencer got an art studio with good lighting and immediacy to the garden. “Nothing’s more important in designing a garden house than to have excellent visibility from within,” he says.

“Stuart wrapped the house around the site, which gave us the opportunities to create a series of views,” says landscape architect Richard Hartlage, who worked closely with project manager Adrian Coerver on the design. Early on, Hartlage and the owners engaged Nussbaum Group to detail and construct the water feature and landscape.

In the studio, as throughout the home, floor-to-ceiling windows frame the view as if they were paintings. “It’s the realization of my vision in a different medium,” he notes. For the garden, Silk and Spencer turned to landscape architect Richard Hartlage. Together, they ultimately decided on a plan featuring two garden “rooms” that are united by a stream flowing from the top of the property to a pond— symbolic of a journey from mountain to sea. “Form, scale and texture are all important in Japanese gardens,” says Hartlage, who worked with project manager Adrian Coerver. “We started with Spencer’s bonsai and then additional trees to complement them, as well as azaleas, mondo grass and ferns. The garden is seen from multiple areas, so there’s an important tree at each sight line.” Spencer, who has worked on some of his trees for decades, explains his fascination

with the art: “Japanese gardens are a study in patience and long thinking. It’s intellectually interesting,” adding, “Sometimes things call you, and you have to allow them into your life.” The rear terrace, visible from the front garden, also showcases one of Spencer’s bonsai, which needed to be craned into position over the house. Along the shoreline below, Hartlage returned the landscape to native grasses. “Like the weather, the house is ever-changing, constantly absorbing and emitting light, mood and reflection. It envelops you,” says Spencer. “In the end, this artist got to live in one of his paintings.” So, while the project took five years to complete, it was worth every considered decision. “I’m sorry the home is finished,” says Silk. “We fit together perfectly. I learned from Spencer, and he learned from me. It was one of the most important partnerships of my career.”

A walkway leads from the front door to the property’s entrance and art studio/guest pavilion. “The relationship between garden and structures weaves a complex interplay in a dance that enhances both,” says the architect. “The result is a living experience filled with surprise and delight.”

ON THE

WATERFRONT SITUATED NEAR THE BANKS OF THE WILLAMETTE, A CONTEMPORARY HOUSE EMBRACES FAMILY AND NATURE. WRITTEN BY LAURA MAUK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINCOLN BARBOUR

R

esidential designer Rick Berry’s clients, a couple with teenage children, had two requests for the home they planned to build near the Willamette River: It needed to relate to its site, and it needed to facilitate family time. “They’re close-knit,” Berry explains. “They didn’t want a lot of space where people could go off and hide with their devices.” Berry discovered just how close-knit the family was when he began the design process. “There was a lot of back-and-forth with everyone,” he says. “The kids came to some of the meetings and had questions and input.” The children’s involvement wasn’t much of a surprise since their father also happens to have built the house. “They all got to be part of this,” says Berry. After getting to know the family and hearing their ideas, Berry decided on a collection of three separate rectangular pavilions. A taller, two-level volume contains the bedrooms and the baths; an open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas comprise the public-space volume. “It’s the hub,” he says. “The family gathers in that one open space and it’s where everything happens.” He placed the entry and an office in a smaller volume that links the public and the private buildings, allowing passage between them. An exterior bridge crosses over a garden area—Berry and the husband designed the exterior spaces together—and connects the public and private volumes to a separate guesthouse. The incorporation of the bridge offers guests an outdoor experience as they move between the buildings. “There’s an adjacent park and daily views of eagles and blue herons,” says Berry, who set each of the buildings on a 10-foot-tall concrete base. “The lot is in a 100-year floodplain,” he says. “In 1996, the water rose to what would be three-quarters of the way up those

concrete walls, so we wanted no living space beneath that point.” Berry marked the 1996 flood level with a line on the concrete walls to “keep the family in tune with nature,” he says. “It’s a reminder of how powerful it is.” To maintain everyone’s link to the environment when they’re inside, Berry employed mostly glass for the structures’ riverfront rear façade. For the public volume, he created a pavilion-like effect in the living area by adding a clerestory. “I wanted it to feel like the roof is just floating, like there’s nothing holding it up,” he says. Views of foliage explode through the glass above a blackened steel fire surround. “It acts as a simple background because what’s most beautiful is everything outside, the light coming in and all of the trees,” Berry says. “And within that background is cabinetry for games they can hide behind the doors.” The residential designer rounded out his material choices with stucco and cedar siding, the latter stained a dark gray. Satisfying the homeowners’ desire for durability, “It will last forever,” he notes. The home’s surroundings figured heavily into designer Jenny Baines’ interior selections. Behind the built-in buffet in the dining area, she installed an antique-glass mirror, and the backsplash in the kitchen is reverse-painted glass. “Those shiny or glassy finishes reference the surface of the water and its reflective nature,” says Baines. Inspired by the region’s weather and the seasons, she clustered decorative mercury glass spheres above the leather-upholstered bed in the master bedroom. “I think of them as giant raindrops,” she says. “We live in Portland. Rain is a big part of our lives.” Nature—and the home’s architecture—also informed Baines’ approach to the palette. “I kept it muted and just did subtle interest with more subtle interest with texture, so it doesn’t fight with what you see out the window,” she says, adding, “The strength of the architecture shines through if you just keep the materials about texture versus color.” Shades of gray, white and warm brown predominate. In the living room, Baines arranged a sofa upholstered with chocolate-colored leather that echoes the tree trunks dotting the landscape and a second sofa covered in a silvery gray fabric reminiscent of the river. “The gray sofa has a wood base and blackened steel legs that are consistent with the blackened steel of the fireplace,” Baines points out. The coffee table, ottomans and the dining chairs are also charcoal-colored. The kitchen includes a live-edge walnut table and walnut cabinetry. To add some dynamism, Baines incorporated white-painted cabinetry and white quartz counters. And while the clients gave both Berry and Baines quite a bit of latitude when it came to crafting their home, the residential designer shares that the couple brought plenty of their own ideas to the table. “They would discover little areas and they would think, ‘What can I do with this?’ That’s the fun of building it yourself,” he says. “They got to be creative and were just able to find these interesting moments along the way, refine the plan, tailor it to themselves and make it even better.”

Residential designer Rick Berry conceived a contemporary house near Portland that ties to its wooded environment. The massive Jeld-Wen front door contrasts with glass walls, gray cedar siding and a walnut soffit. Beyond a carpet by Jaipur Rugs, a walnut screen separates the light-filled entry from an office area.

Extraordinary WORLDS IN SEATTLE, A PAIR OF CREATIVES IMAGINES FANCIFUL COLLECTIONS OF STATIONERY, PRINTS AND ACCESSORIES. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA KASEMAN

luxesource.com / 301

F

rom cheeky foxes to sly masked raccoons, a witty, joyous spirit is alive and well in the offerings of Apartment On Belmont, the Seattle firm known for its charming stationery, art prints and accessories. Housed in a former preschool classroom in West Seattle, the company is the playground and creation of artist Michael Doyle and graphic designer Samantha Wagner. Taking cues from Doyle’s inimitable style, the partners have evolved a singular aesthetic for their signature stationery, which harks back to the bygone era of artful correspondence by scribes like Noël Coward and Colette. But perhaps the most distinctive hallmark of their work is its vibrant visual storytelling, featuring Doyle’s colorful host of characters. Named after the location of Doyle’s home, Apartment On Belmont “is a visual world that contains all the things we love,” says Wagner. “Similar to what a writer does in a fictional piece, we try to use descriptive words, settings, and characters to establish a rich, immersive world you wish you could live in.”

Michael Doyle (opposite), part of the creative team behind Apartment On Belmont, along with Samantha Wagner, works on one of the company’s whimsical designs (above). A notebook of Doyle’s (left) holds museum mementos and travel sketches.

In their Seattle studio, Wagner and Doyle (left) stand in front of the card walls where they display their product line. Doyle’s work space (opposite) has his paints and tools, and a smattering of paintings and ideas on paper.

Doyle and Wagner’s illustrated realm has grown to include a cocktail party’s worth of personalities. Among them: friendly alligators; Lillian, a wide-eyed ingenue named for silent screen star Lillian Gish; and a languid rabbit dubbed Leonard in honor of Leonard Weisgard, the famed children’s book illustrator. These rich characters—“We’re going to keep adding to them and playing with them,” says Doyle—frolic amidst a landscape sometimes based on his native Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, with painterly forests and dreamy water views. The duo originates concepts together, then Doyle will draw or paint the main content of what will become their finished designs. Sometimes they’ll pore through their archives (stored in vintage suitcases) to source items or find inspiration. Wagner then develops the images digitally, playing with composition, scale and repeating patterns. But the true

alchemy occurs in between these moments of individual effort as they build mood boards and swap newly discovered books. And when brainstorming, “The first thing we do is leave the studio,” confesses Doyle about taking advantage of their eclectic community. “It feels a bit like we’re playing hooky,” says Wagner, “but we’re always gathering ideas. West Seattle is a neighborhood with a real authenticity, full of interesting people and characters.” The creative partners plan to expand Apartment On Belmont, developing a line of wallpaper, textiles and other products highlighting their distinctive iconography. “We want to take this art we’re creating and fill a space with it, mostly because we also want our artwork for ourselves on these different applications,” shares Wagner. And as the brand grows, “Our mythology is growing too,” says Doyle. “The next chapter for us is to see where else our little world can go.”

TUDOR TIME

A SENSITIVE RENOVATION OF A 1930S SEATTLE HOME YIELDS REVIVED HISTORIC DETAILS OUTSIDE AND A MINDFUL BLEND OF OLD AND NEW INSIDE. WRITTEN BY MINDY PANTIEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARIS KENJAR

306 / luxesource.com

ARCHITECTURE / JOHN DEFOREST AND MARK SLIVKA, DEFOREST ARCHITECTS INTERIOR DESIGN / ANDY BEERS, ORE STUDIOS HOME BUILDER / PAUL VASSALLO AND TONY GIAQUINTA, SCHULTZ MILLER LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE / RICHARD PULKRABEK, RICHARD PULKRABEK, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Architects John DeForest and Mark Slivka and designer Andy Beers reimagined a 1930s Tudor in Seattle. In the living room, a Bensen sofa and Minotti armchair and ottoman, both from Inform Interiors, and tufted chairs in Coraggio mohair form a stylish spot to sit. Joining the arrangement are a Chadhaus coffee table and a rug from Driscoll Robbins Fine Carpets.

T

he charm of a vintage Tudor home is undeniable—the romance of the style replete with steeply pitched gables and leaded-glass windows draws fans. On the inside, though, it’s often a different story, with cramped, gloomy rooms typical of an era unsuited to modern-day living. Reconciling the two can be a challenge, as architect John DeForest and designer Andy Beers know well. Faced with a prime 1930s example in a desirable Seattle neighborhood, they set about preserving the best of the past while crafting a home more in line with the active lifestyle of a couple with two young boys. As DeForest puts it, “We didn’t want an Easter egg effect where the outside is one thing, and the inside is incredibly different.” Adds Beers, “I wanted the house to speak to a contemporary way of living without being so specific it would date itself.” DeForest, along with project architect Mark Slivka, gives the first hints of a reimagined home with the arrival sequence. “The old front door was heavy and formal, and the entry lacked shelter,” recalls the architect. Remedying the situation meant installing two full-height, etched glass doors with sidelights. In collaboration with builder Paul Vassallo and project manager Tony Giaquinta, they replaced the siding, swapped out the old double-hung windows and repointed the weathered bricks. Giaquinta also located the right brick for the chimney extensions and new garden walls out front. “I spent quite awhile sourcing the material; it had to match perfectly,” he says, “They ended up coming from a building in Seattle that was torn down.”

Landscape architect Richard Pulkrabek reworked the double lot beginning at sidewalk level with plantings like fragrant sweet box and liriope. “The existing landscape contained screening hedges at the sides and back, which were retained along with a few mature rhododendrons on the front bank but otherwise everything was replaced,” says Pulkrabek. He also leveled the side yard as much as possible to accommodate a small sports court, a must, he notes, for a family with active children. Inside, the architects created detailed diagrams of what was and wasn’t working and determined that the kitchen, formerly relegated to the dark side of the structure, needed to be flipped to a sunny locale—and the previously marooned dining room relocated across from it. “The clients wanted a kitchen as a hub that opened to the rest of the house,” says DeForest. Traditional stile and rail

cabinetry, trimmed back for a more contemporary look, was introduced, and the team also worked hard on millwork proportions. “The bases and trim are like they would have been in a Tudor, but, instead of a more intricate profile, we went with rectangular to bridge the range between traditional and modern,” Slivka says. When it came to the millwork and other more permanent changes, Beers notes, “It was important that they should be in keeping with the style of the house so the next owner wouldn’t feel the need to rip it out.” Special care was taken to choose sympathetic materials like the 3-by-6-tile on the wall in the master bath that’s hand-glazed with an irregular edge. The new staircase, with an exposed superstructure, has a rail finished “in a way that makes it feel vibrant and alive and not hidden behind a coat of lacquer,” the designer explains. “It celebrates that it is exposed metal.”

Calacatta marble and honed granite on the countertops, from Meta Marble & Granite, offer striking contrast in the kitchen. On the backsplash is Clé tile, while the flooring is by GBI Tile & Stone from Bedrosians Tile & Stone. Studio Dunn stools are at the island, which is illuminated by Visual Comfort & Co. pendants. The Miele refrigerator and Dacor range are from Albert Lee; the island faucet is by Rohl from Best Plumbing.

The arbor, accessed from the kitchen by Marvin doors from Lundgren Enterprises, overlooks outdoor spaces conceived by landscape architect Richard Pulkrabek and installed by Ohashi Landscape Services. Fermob stacking chairs from YLiving surround a custom table by Orcas Workshop. Above is a Form & Reform chandelier.

Honed stone and marble also read as timeless gestures and speak—as does the palette of the other hard surfaces and furnishings—of the clients’ desire for a high-contrast/ low-color approach. “Everything they showed us was relatively neutral: cool neutrals with warm neutrals so the latter seem like color,” he says. Taking their request to heart, in the living room, the designer opted for quieter ivory and mocha tones on the rug and sofa that allow the deep whiskey brown and tarnished gold on the remaining pieces to appear more like color. For the silhouettes of the furniture, the clients’ wish for a more grown-up feel drove Beers’ decision making. “It was a good opportunity to use pieces to add a little dressiness but sized to a historic home,” he says. In the living room, a Minotti lounge chair and ottoman, a sofa with a boxy profile and a pair of vintage slipper chairs swathed in silk mohair fit the bill, their sculptural forms and just-right proportions slotting into the space perfectly. “Each piece needed to be distinctive because there aren’t a lot of them,” he adds. In the dining room, a 12-foot maple table and classic Kaare Klint chairs with saddle leather seats impart a luxurious yet tailored feel. To keep the space balanced, wallpaper in the niche and a light fixture composed of glass globes encourage softness. And, ultimately, balance is at the very heart of the entire project: “They didn’t want grandma’s house or the Jetsons,” says DeForest. Beers concurs: “We started from a historic place and pushed it as far forward as we could.”

Plastic is complicated: The material has allowed for important technological advances, but it’s also estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, and the waste caused by singleuse plastic poses a very real recycling problem. Today, a new crop of innovators is focused on upcycling, transforming discarded plastic into colorful, dynamic pieces. This sustainable design approach proves that plastic can be repurposed in exciting ways, while having a positive impact around us.
