With its headquarters and 125,000-square-foot distribution center in New Jersey, an extensive slab gallery and stone shop, eight showrooms and over 200 dealers nationwide, Artistic Tile is living the American design dream. Answering the American call for top quality, customization and the ability to choose materials firsthand, Artistic Tile delivers on these and more with a full-service, one-stopshop experience. “Our production capabilities allow customers complete freedom to design their dream space in a myriad of colors, shapes and patterns,” CEO and founder Nancy Epstein says. “And they will have the highest-quality materials that will fit perfectly in their homes. Clients can select materials in person or watch them being made at our Secaucus facility.”
“Stone is a product of permanence; something that is natural, elegant, lasts forever and cannot be imitated.”
SETTING THE BAR Since 1987, Artistic Tile has served the most discerning consumers of luxury tile and stone products under the guidance of Epstein, who continues to lead the company into the future, along with her sons Michael and Zachary Epstein, and cousins Lauren Cherkas and Joshua Levinson. Today, through its headquarters and its showrooms in New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas, Artistic Tile leads the market, producing designs that define the direction of the tile industry. Exquisite attention to detail ensures a final product that sets the bar for the luxury tile segment. “We are known for our innovative, award-winning designs in stone, glass and other mixed materials,” Epstein says. “We also source the highest-quality materials from all over the world and stock many beautiful natural products.” 1
THE LOCAL DIFFERENCE Artistic Tile uses its New Jersey manufacturing facilities to prototype and test out new ideas, patterns and colors. “We can walk into the production area and use what they are currently making to inform our latest ideas,” Epstein says. “It is a great symbiotic relationship having a variety of machines right next to our design department.”

t was the end of New York Fashion Week and the kick-off to the design season when I found myself in the spirited world of designer Johnson Hartig of fashion brand Libertine. We were jammed into BGs, celebrating the launch of his new textile collection for Schumacher, and I got to chatting with Johnson about our shared belief in the importance of beauty; how deeply it can move you and its power as a means of emotional connection. Walking back to my hotel later, I thought about what had first sparked my own appreciation for beauty. Coincidentally, it involved Schumacher and a room in my grandmother’s home. She referred to it as the “black-and-white room,” her guest room where I stayed on my many visits. The ceiling and walls were covered in Shengyou Toile and all of the bed linens were made from the same fabric. A large white basin set upon a chic French antique table held her artistic interior garden, overflowing with lush green plantings. The table was nested into a large bay window that overlooked one of her several outdoor gardens, dotted with color in the spring and summer. That room was magical to me; it was beauty and warmth and love. This season, I encourage you to seek out beauty and hold a memory of it close to you. As Johnson reminded me...it soothes the soul.

rivolity, joie de vivre and kaleidoscopic colors are synonymous with the Christian Lacroix aesthetic. The same could be said of the brand’s creative director, Sacha Walckhoff, who stepped into the role in 2010 after Lacroix left the House. Over the last decade, Walckhoff has transformed the company from a fashion powerhouse to a leader in the lifestyle and home decor space. “We are one of the only fashion brands who truly succeeded in going into home decor since Versace and Ralph Lauren,” says the creative director. In his latest furnishings collection with Roche Bobois, Walckhoff has stayed true to the brand’s
theatrical roots, dreaming up a fantastical fairy tale world featuring prints of enchanted forests and exotic creatures living in harmony. “The House of Christian Lacroix is as much about contrast as it is about adding surprise and wonder to the narration in any collection,” says Walckhoff. Each piece in the Bois Paradis collection delights with contrasting textures, evocative shapes and geometric patterns, while paying homage to Christian Lacroix’s beginnings. “This collection is a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: combining the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style,” says Walckhoff. This is exemplified in furnishings like the sumptuous sofa, which features the botanical Cueillette print in a rich velvet. Other items, like the large sixpaneled screen in natural oak with glossy lacquer, serve as an ideal backdrop for the Bois Paradis motif: a silhouetted storybook scene of soaring birds, swinging apes, and lush flora and fauna. Similar dreamscapes appear in Christian Lacroix’s other home collaborations too, all helmed by Walckhoff, such as a fabric and wallpaper line with Designers Guild and, recently, a porcelain tableware
Sacha Walckhoff’s latest designs for Christian Lacroix Maison include the Bois Paradis Bleu Nigelle wallcovering for Designers Guild (shown on previous page), a porcelain tableware collection with Vista Alegre (top, right), and a furnishings line with Roche Bobois (left).
collection with Vista Alegre. Herbariae, inspired by five flowers—the poppy, narcissus, lotus, dahlia and thistle—and designed around two color themes—a graphic black-and-white palette, and a watercolor style that combines soft pinks and yellows with celadon green and peacock blue—brings a neoclassical freshness to the table. “Mixing geometric patterns and floral ones makes each of them much more interesting,” says Walckhoff. “It allows the eye to go from one point to the other when looking at the decor of the room. As Diana Vreeland said, ‘The eye has to travel.’ ” Enhancing the natural environment has been a trademark of the Christian Lacroix brand, and one that Walckhoff embraces. Iconic moments include the Butterfly Parade design created in 2012 that so embodied the frivolities and joie de vivre of Christian Lacroix that it was mistaken for an archival print. “The lesson was that if a design is close enough to the idea people have about the brand, then the design is Lacroix!” remarks Walckhoff. As a multifaceted company, Walckhoff welcomes, and uses to his advantage, a broader vision. “We are not stopped by ideas that an interior brand would not do or have. To be un-experimented, unexpected sometimes helps,” he says. Aspirations include designing a hotel or a restaurant, and with Walckhoff ’s provocative spirit, one can only imagine the mythical fairy-tale world he might dream up. “When your imagination is always on fire, you just have to move forward,” he says. “It is exciting but exhausting sometimes! It keeps me alive.”

TRAITS SCHUMACHER TAKES A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH JOHNSON HARTIG’S FASHION HOUSE, LIBERTINE. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL COSTELLO
Johnson Hartig, founder of the fashion label Libertine, believes clothing should showcase one’s personality and that the same goes for interior design. “The psychology of interiors fascinates me,” he observes. Hartig brings that passion to his new line with Schumacher—a 40-piece collection of wallpaper, fabric and trim showcasing a mix of bold colors and patterns, but with classical influences. “The collection encapsulates him perfectly,” remarks Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “If you were to use it all together, it makes quite the statement. But if you were to pick out separate pieces, they still translate individually.” Caponigro is a longtime fan of Hartig and she saw him as the perfect collaborator with Schumacher. The brand has a history of working with fashion designers, beginning with Paul Poiret in 1930 and later Elsa Schiaparelli and Karl Lagerfeld under the Waverly brand. The Libertine collection is an example of what Caponigro calls the “yin and yang” of the company. “We have beautiful classics,” she says. “But we’re always pushing forward in terms of fashion and fun.” Bringing his own personality to every detail, many of the pieces, like the Punk Rock Mix Tape trim, were inspired by Hartig’s childhood or his everyday life. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ve always been inspired by punk culture,” he says. And the hand-drawn artwork of the Magical Ming Dragon fabric and wallcovering was influenced by Hartig’s own prized Tibetan rug. While his newest designs embody a sharp boldness, they maintain an underlying classic style. For example, the Modern Toile fabric and wallcovering features a contemporary twist on the traditional design using large-scale patterns, and the Java Seas fabric finds its inspiration in Indian batiks from the 16th and 17th centuries. “I can’t wait to see how people use them—even if they use a couple pillows or pieces throughout a room,” Hartig says. “It will be reflective of their personalities, as they are of mine.”
Johnson Hartig photographed in his Los Angeles home with his dog, Terrance. “The way Johnson understands home is the way he understands fashion,” says Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “He has an innate style, innate creativity.”

Italian JOB
DESIGNER CRISTINA CELESTINO EMBRACES AN ICONIC FENDI PATTERN IN HER LATEST LAUNCH WITH THE ESTEEMED FASHION HOUSE. WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAR SARTOR
Formally trained as an architect, Cristina Celestino’s design direction combines traditional elements connoting heritage with a contemporary aesthetic. As a fellow Italian interior and product designer with a passion for legacy, it was quite fitting that Fendi Casa tapped Celestino for its latest groundbreaking collection, Back Home. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the inspiration behind the collaboration with the renowned fashion label. You first worked with Fendi designing one-ofa-kind furniture for the Design Miami booth in 2016. What came next? I worked with Fendi on the Omotesando store in Tokyo, where the Design Miami concept was adapted to a pop-up using everything from the furniture to wallcoverings. Some of those pieces—mostly low tables and sofas—were then chosen and produced exclusively for several Fendi boutiques worldwide. Silvia Venturini Fendi trusted in my
vision and thought that my collection represented the Fendi world, but also had strong potential commercially. After suggesting my work to Raffaella Vignatelli, the president of Fendi Casa, this collection, Back Home, was born.
company and an Italian family heritage brand run by women, both Fendi and Fendi Casa, who offered me complete freedom in the design process. We shared a common vision, so it was a very easy collaboration from start to finish.
And the influence? Silvia Venturini Fendi asked me to create a collection of furniture inspired by the Pequin—Fendi’s signature broad stripe pattern—created back in 1987, the same year Fendi Casa launched. As for the inspiration, the overall mood is from the ’70s—and, in particular, the interiors and furniture of Willy Rizzo, a decorator and photographer who worked in Rome in the mid-60s. He mixed refined luxury with a modern vision in a bold and distinct way using very rich material combinations and finishes.
Any favorites? That would be like asking a parent to name a favorite child—it’s impossible! I love different elements in each of the pieces, and I love that they work alone as either statement and iconic pieces, or equally well together.
This is a large collection—14 products! What was it like to work with the Fendi Casa team? It was an honor to collaborate with such an iconic
What were your aspirations for this collection? My hope, as it is with all of my designs, is to create pieces that express a message and a story beyond the aesthetic value. One that people remember. Fendi Casa’s quality is impeccable, so if people choose to pass this furniture down, they can certainly do so, but I never design with those preconceptions. I simply follow my heart and my imagination.

Tell us about your passion for flamenco. I’ve been in love with flamenco since the first time I visited Madrid as a little girl. I was inspired by the strength of the female dancers in their feminine, powerful garb. I always knew that it was something I wanted to pursue. Was there a moment when the lace idea crystallized for you? My visit last year to Azzedine Alaïa’s atelier made me look at lace more closely. I sensed that the delicacy of his silhouette, 098 / LUXESOURCE.COM
mixed with bold prints and lines, made for a self-confident, modern woman.
LAUNCH PHOTOS: CAROLINA GHERI.
Influenced by the fiery art of flamenco dancing, designer Natasha Baradaran’s first textile collection is a love letter to lace, transforming the typically feminine element into a series of abstract, bold and non-binary patterns. The line is available through Thomas Lavin in L.A. and includes linens and performance fabrics. natashabaradaran.com
Why do you craft stories behind your collections? Every day I see how many textiles are out there for interiors and a narrative guides me to create something different— an important consideration for me before I release something new. It’s a through line in a collection, be it textiles or furniture, and creates cohesiveness. What aspect of the collection appeals to you personally? I’m feeling our warm colorways—terra cotta, marigold. I love the warmth of this palette paired with cooler tones. It feels fresh and timeless and reminds me of summers in the Mediterranean. The volume centers on a bevy of beautiful projects, from an ornate villa in Qatar to an Arts and Crafts cottage near Chicago, plus several of the designer’s spectacular homes. Punctuating the chapters are what Corrigan refers to as “interludes”—mini master classes on hanging art and mirrors, understanding scale and symmetry, appreciating surface treatments (fabric, tile, murals) and more. And while Corrigan discusses the “comfortable elegance” synonymous with his rooms, he also reveals another key underpinning of his work: “Looking through these projects, I realized that the one effect I consistently try to accomplish is an innate feeling of safety. In fact, the notion of feeling cocooned, protected and pampered underlies my whole design ethos.” rizzoliusa.com

The 9,580-square-foot structure was designed by Montecito-based architect Robert C. Glazier and Mexico City firm Bernardi + Peschard Arquitectura. The luxuriously furnished interior is imbued with the spirit of modern Mexico—bold and colorful— and each of the three master suites boasts its own spa-like bathroom. The exterior features private courtyards, two infinity-edge pools and a Jacuzzi, expansive gathering spaces, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, and a sunken fire pit. The casa includes a butler, daily chef-prepared breakfasts, a family-style barbecue, a mezcal tasting, a nightly aromatherapy menu, spa treatments, fitness classes and access to watersports equipment. The Hoxton hotel opened this October in the former L.A. Railway Authority building, on the corner of 11th Street and Broadway. The 174 rooms are by Londonbased Ennismore Design Studio and pay homage to the 1922 Beaux Arts structure with French-inspired wall paneling, chevron flooring and decorative accents including handmade tiles and retro-style telephones and radios. For the public areas, Ennismore partnered with Soho House to create Art Deco-style spaces that reflect early Hollywood and the nearby Mayan and Orpheum theaters. The hotel features three dining options headed by Sunday Hospitality: Sibling Rival, an all-day American diner; Pilot, a rooftop restaurant and bar with a Mediterranean flair; and a basement bar scheduled to open next year. Since the 1920s, the Army-Navy YMCA building on West Broadway has been a San Diego icon. Built in the Italian Renaissance style, it has hosted tens of thousands of military guests over its near-century of hospitality and in 2007 the structure was designated historic by the city. Restored by Oram Hotels and enlivened by designer Sormeh Rienne, the refined interiors evoke a European boutique hotel with a decidedly casual feel. The colorful Guild Bar is a highlight of the lobby and just steps away is Luca, the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant headed by acclaimed chef Justin Vaiciunas. A full-service firm specializing in high-end, modern and contemporary design, LeTourneau Architecture was well-suited to build upon developer Clark Fritchle’s initial vision for 1806 Marapata. “He wanted to manifest a more avant-garde aesthetic, long overdue in Orange County,” Chris LeTourneau, principal architect, shares. “Our ethos and Fritchle’s intentions made for a natural partnership.” LeTourneau and his team completed not only the architecture, but also the interior design and staging. Using modeling with virtual reality, they aim to create environments that are a response to the obstacles presented throughout the process. Those challenges, LeTourneau says, “are contextual derivatives that define great design.” As a residence that encompasses substantially unique features within the contemporary vernacular—itself a challenge—1806 Marapata is a shining example of LeTourneau Architecture’s particular skill set.

“ A project is finished when I say it is. I could have taken Marapata to market, meeting most people’s standards, five months ago. We could have spent much less on it. But I demand perfection.” —Clark Fritchle, President and CEO
FRITCHLE COMPANY Clark Fritchle, President and CEO 310.990.5327 · fritchlecompany.com ·
fritchlecompany
1806 Marapata began with Clark Fritchle’s vision. The president and CEO at Fritchle Company, he imagined a speculative home of the finest caliber, dreamed up and given form by a thoughtfully curated group of industry leaders. And so, six of Southern California’s most adept firms came together, with sophistication and modernity as their inspirational guidelines. When the skill of a world-class team meets a collaborative environment abundant with creative freedoms, masterworks abound. Fritchle understood this, and refused to sacrifice quality and ingenuity for the sake of practical concerns. When Marapata’s project leads, architect Chris LeTourneau and builder David Hiebsch, presented a possible issue to Fritchle, he treated time and money as secondary. His response focused instead on pursuing unparalleled practices and “giving the buyer the home they deserve.” The finished product offers an intriguing prospect: to live each day enveloped in a true work of art, composed without compromise.

David Hiebsch, the president of Hiebsch Custom Homes, believes teamwork is the key to success. It’s little wonder his firm fit so beautifully into the workings of 1806 Marapata. Brought on by Chris LeTourneau at LeTourneau Architecture, with whom he had previously partnered, Hiebsch was thrilled to discover the mutual respect and vision he shared with Marapata’s creators. He, LeTourneau and Clark Fritchle collaborated to bring a paramount piece of architecture to life. For their part, Hiebsch and his team executed every design element with the quality-oriented approach they consider a given. “We do woodworking in-house, to ensure that each fine feature is done to the highest of standards,” Hiebsch says. “We also personally handle the punch list. Those small details are what make a home exceptional, standing apart from any other.” This mindset shows in Marapata, of which Hiebsch says, “I feel confident that we achieved nothing but the best.”

AVAUNT GARAGE DOORS Morgan Mead, President 949.302.8181 · avauntgarage.com avaunt_garage_doors carriagehousedoor At Avaunt Garage Doors, innovative solutions to complex, seemingly impossible installations are all in a day’s work. The team’s role in 1806 Marapata proves it. “We were brought into the project by David at Hiebsch Custom Homes, who was initially convinced that the garage doors would have to be built on-site because of their intricate and unique design,” says Morgan Mead, Avaunt’s president. “We partnered with Carriage House Door Company to get Hiebsch and the team the exact door they were looking for in a very quick time frame.” The result is a seamless, contemporary-style garage door of the quality level for which Avaunt, in business since 2002, has become known. Using drawings, photos and technology—which Mead says “is allowing garage doors to become ‘smart’ alongside everything else”— the company produces custom designs that achieve the utmost caliber in aesthetics and practicality.

It’s customization at its best. “The client knows what they want,” Gandi says. “We provide the technical expertise and skill necessary to execute it.” The company’s work on 1806 Marapata shows off the fruits of such labor. After joining the project at the request of David Hiebsch, Design Woodworking rose to the challenge of designing in tandem with the architect, Chris LeTourneau. “His vision was for the walls, ceilings and cabinetry to all be level and plumb,” Gandi shares. “We worked extensively with the team to achieve this.”

This cohesive palette was brought to life by Epic Ceramic & Stone. Led by Josiah Lilly, the company comprises stone and tile experts and artisans who have the resources of two sister showrooms, Famosa and The Slab Studio, at hand. Combine this with Lilly’s own history of working with Marapata’s builder, David Hiebsch, and the team was the clear choice for the job. Now that it has wrapped up to great success and satisfaction, Lilly is looking to the future. This year, Epic will complete the move to a 23,000-square-foot facility with new robotic equipment.

This wasn’t the first project the two teams have completed together, but it is a noteworthy one. “We used the largest tub we offer—the BW-01-XXL,” Jensen shares. “It is a massive piece and has a beautiful asymmetrical shape to it. No matter how stunning the structure, its surrounding greenery, walkways, waterscapes and outdoor living features are what define the exterior, and thus, the first impression. Clark Fritchle and David Hiebsch fully appreciated this when they sought out GDM Landscape & Pools. The company’s principals, Grant McCorkle and his son Logan, lead a team of experts who each possess a skill set unique to their precise role. Altogether, they’ve become known for unfailingly professional, beautifully executed work. For Poyser, this unforgettable opportunity first came to light when he met Clark Fritchle and David Hiebsch through a friend during a round of golf. “They show the same passion in their respective fields as I have for mine, and we quickly realized that we had mutual respect and a shared appreciation for detail-oriented and collaborative work,” Poyser says. While already established in the fashion world before arriving at the House of Chanel in 1983, it was Karl Lagerfeld’s 30-plus-year tenure at the helm of the French label that solidified his place in fashion history. The “more-is-more” attitude of the ’80s saw women dressing in bold patterns and figure-defining silhouettes, an attitude that’s seeing a resurgence today, where flaunting one’s personal style is celebrated more than ever.

Today, the kitchen is the main hub of the house, so set the scene with an oversize vase brimming with greenery. For this space, Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, chose olive tree branches, which can last for weeks. Previous page: A gorgeous floral arrangement is a must when entertaining in your dining room. “It anchors the space, sets the tone and can be a great conversation starter, says Kirk, who styled the display with anemones, sedum, dahlias and magnolia branches in a generous white vase.

For a row house renovation in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park, Rebekah Zaveloff’s clients requested one element straightaway: a woodburning fireplace in the kitchen. The family has a summer home in Vermont with an outdoor pizza oven and wanted to bring a similar vibe to this residence. Thankfully, Zaveloff, the designer and cofounder of KitchenLab Interiors, was completely on board. “It’s all about creating spaces that feel a certain way, evoke emotion or a sense of nostalgia,” Zaveloff explains. In this case, the homeowners desired a kitchen that would recall vacation all year long. kitchenlabinteriors.com The fireplace is such a defining feature. How did you decide on its placement within the kitchen? I know from working in old homes that adding fireplaces can be a very challenging undertaking. There is a lot to consider, including chimney size, structural issues, converting gas lines, ventilation and so on. Originally, we had designed the fireplace to go on the back wall between the windows but when we demolished the space, we found an old chimney in the corner and the location really ended up being a happy accident.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Tell us about your approach to pattern. The patterned concrete floor tiles make the space here! In so many kitchens we incorporate wood floors, as people are nervous to commit to pattern, but the wood on wood can start to blend; it can be challenging to create contrast. Here, the tile adds a dose of drama but isn’t overwhelming. I did several versions of the design until we came up with something everyone loved with just the right balance of black and white. 178 / LUXESOURCE.COM
How is the dining room used? This space certainly changed once we opened it up to the kitchen. Before, the two rooms were separated by a large volume that housed a pantry and powder room; it felt choppy. Now, everything flows together nicely. So I decided to do away with dedicated dining, living and hall areas and instead put seating everywhere. I believe if you make spaces welcoming, people will use them!
Extra seating areas are always smart, and this cozy space in front of the fireplace houses Jayson Home’s Melrose Chair in spice velvet with a Siren Song pillow. Custom Villa Lagoon Tile, selected by designer Rebekah Zaveloff, decorates the floor.

Think outside the box when it comes to the mantel. Fig branches provide an interesting pop of green while a marbleized teapot adds unexpected charm and a pretty silhouette. Few things are more important than good lighting and a scattering of candlesticks ensures the festivities will continue by candlelight, says Kirk.

LEAVE FORMALITIES AT THE DOOR: TODAY’S TAKE ON HAUTE HOSTING CALLS FOR INTIMACY, INDIVIDUALITY AND JOIE DE VIVRE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT
LIGHTEN UP Silver polish, starched linens, seafood forks: Mercifully, such ceremony is no longer a must. As Luxe uncovers, it’s the entirely personal and surprising experiences that leave a lasting impression. Over the next few pages, designers and creatives weigh in on the conversation, encouraging us to pair heirloom dishware with bold linens and wild vines, to outfit guest rooms with raucous minibars, and by all means, to mingle beyond the bounds of the living and dining areas, as evidenced by this sumptuous yet laid-back music room by interior designer Heather Hilliard. Mind you, this “new” approach to fine entertaining isn’t so much new as a swinging of the pendulum: “Mrs. Astor was known for her infamous Midnight Suppers,” recalls event designer Rebecca Gardner. “These were intimate after-parties where she served ridiculously casual food like spaghetti and meatballs on her finest china. The beginning of high-low!” Take a page from the infamous socialite’s book, and toast to the season.

HISTORY REPEATS In Victorian-era England, drawing rooms were a prerequisite for any fine home, providing an elegant hub to “withdraw” for post-dinner merriment. Fast-forward a century and change, and the room’s intentionality is enjoying a renaissance, thanks to reinvigorated demand for defined entertaining spaces. Here, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners adapted the concept on the parlor floor of a historic 1856 Chelsea townhouse, deftly eschewing any stuffy connotations in the process. “We reinterpreted the home’s original Italianate revival moldings into a more streamlined and proportionate version that still held the intended gravitas of the room,” explains Kevin Blusewicz, senior associate at Steven Harris Architects. Joined by convivial seating arrangements, a “discrete yet assertive” color scheme and impressively scaled new windows that bathe the room in sunlight, the grand bones appear to soften and relax. reesroberts.com

THREE A-LIST EVENT DESIGNERS SOUND OFF ON THE SIGNATURE PARTY TRICK THAT WILL KEEP GUESTS BUZZING.
REBECCA GARDNER
Founder and Creative Director, Houses & Parties Reimagine the classics. I like to set the table with my best pieces, most of which belonged to my grandmother, but I avoid being stuffy. The key is to be a little irreverent with anything fancy. One way to do this is to layer patterns on top of each other, like a floral Meissen dinner plate on top of a chintz fabric. I prefer big, luscious flowers that are just about to fall apart and unruly vines that twist around place settings. You can also repurpose: consider fingers bowls for ice cream sundaes and nut dishes for colorful candies. If you make the table a little wild and naughty, guests will behave accordingly. rebecca-gardner.com

SOLO SHOW
From industry galas to society weddings, a distinct pattern in floral design has emerged: single-bloom arrangements. Lush and unfussy, this shift is actualized by Poshan, a new Manhattan-based floral atelier. With Art Deco-inspired linen packaging and a mission of celebrating the singular beauty of rare varieties, Poshan has become a fast favorite of the fashion crowd. Here, founder Wu York shares his approach. poshanflowers.com Inspiration behind Poshan: I couldn’t find floral arrangements that I loved, so I created them. I use single flowers in powerfully simple arrangements, without any “filler” or greens. I base the overall sculptural shape on what’s available at the market each morning. Clients are asking for: English roses! And seasonal flowers, like tree peonies and fresh French lavender. Floral wisdom to live by: Less is more. Focus on quality flowers displayed in special, handmade vessels. People appreciate these two elements now more than ever.

BRYAN RAFANELLI
Founder & Chief Creative Officer, Rafanelli Events; author of A Great Party (Rizzoli) Play with scale. I encourage my clients to think big, even in an intimate space. Of course, this means keeping things tasteful and proportionate, but larger design elements will act as conversation starters and add energy to your event. When a room fills with people, many traditional touches, like linens, florals and candlelight, are ultimately obscured by bodies. Size makes a statement and we talk often about “shoulders and above” at my company. You always want a larger visual element that will live above the crowd! rafanellievents.com
COLLEEN KENNEDY COHEN
Founder and Creative Director, Colleen Kennedy Cohen LLC Make it interactive. Guests like to participate in something, so I try to create an element that allows them to engage with the event design. Consider styling a fabulous dessert cart with various sweets, and allow guests to handselect their final course. My go-tos include chocolate mousse, almond nougat, beautiful holiday cookies, ribbon candies, mini pies, gumdrops (Lord Jones CBD gumdrops are always a hit) and roasted chestnuts for cracking. I love a tableside surprise, especially around the holidays. colleenkennedycohen.com

SHAPE SHIFTER Lato x Lato, the design lab from architect couple Francesco Breganze de Capnist and Virginia Valentini, touts its debut collection as “inspired by Italian architectural heritage, reframed for a contemporary global aesthetic.” One look at the Vestalia candleholder and this ethos is rendered in clarity: What appears as a single slab of imperial green marble is actually a series of movable, hinged parts, a reference to 1930s Rationalist architecture. Candlelight turned conversation starter. latoxlato.com

Boutique establishments brimming with personal touches and memorable amenities have fast become the new wave of luxury hotels. So, where could be a more prescient well to draw inspiration from for our own guest quarters this season? We turned to the riotously beautiful NOLA hot spot Maison de la Luz, designed by Atelier Ace and Studio Shamshiri, for a lesson in idiosyncratic design and Southern hospitality. maisondelaluz.com
⊳ DOWN TIME Thrice daily meals together can test even the dearest of friends and family, which makes the integration of a private guest nook for morning coffees or solo meals a bonus for all. Let Maison de la Luz’s intimate window adjacent seating areas, each equipped with loungefriendly seating and copper-topped “séance tables” etched in astrological motifs, remind that this setup can nest happily in guest accommodations of all shapes and sizes.
IN GOOD SPIRITS ⊲ Throughout the hotel’s 36 king rooms, a festive tone is set by the trading of nightstands for decadent bedside minibars. A selection of top-shelf libations— amongst them, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whiskey and Ruinart Brut Rosé—sit atop a bespoke bar cabinet, which in turn encloses an artful collection of highball and champagne glasses. Brass ice buckets in the shape of a pineapple cheekily harken back to the hotel’s overarching design goal: moments of rebellion within the envelope of traditional hospitality.
▲ DETAIL ORIENTED When it came to conceptualizing the en suites, Studio Shamshiri principal designer Pamela Shamshiri “leaned into classic hotel iconography: waffle robes, incredible towels and all-stone bathrooms.” But luxuriant amenities extend beyond these focal details to smaller nuances of the bathroom design. Note, for example, the patinaed silver vanity set by Pigeon and Poodle and the merchandized curation of Grown Alchemist toiletries; chic and considered final flourishes for any guest setup.

DOUBLE ACT Litchfield, Connecticut-based architect and designer Julia Metcalf is not a fan of the phrase “she shed,” but admits it applies to this jewel box study, which moonlights as a chic cocktail lounge. “The client wanted a place to hide away, to work and to entertain in privacy,” says Metcalf. To welcome the addition of company, a traditional desk chair was replaced with a custom settee, and the Zuber wallpaper-clad bar area holds a rainbow of vintage glassware (sourced at the Brimfield Antique Show) set atop highgloss, piano-finish built-ins concealing a petite wine refrigerator. With the stashing of a laptop, the glamorous work space takes on the persona of an intimate speakeasy where only a chosen few gain admittance. juliametcalfdesigns.com

Rendered in jewel tones and adorned with birds and butterflies, the newest installment of wrapping paper from heritage brand Mrs. John L. Strong stands as testament to the fact that a gift is only as chic (and memorable) as the package it arrives in. With a heavy weight, large scale and matte, tactile finish, each sheet is a present in itself: a little luxury worthy of crafting or framing, or simply unwrapping with affection. Save the remnants and give in style all year long. mrsstrong.com
“TECHNOLOGY SHOULD SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE, NOT COMPLICATE IT.”
Continuity of technology is a critical component of home renovations. At Modern Home Systems, a San Diego-based company specializing in home automation, designated home theaters and outdoor entertainment centers, the objective of each residential project is to find a solution that fits the homeowner’s lifestyle while incorporating as much of their existing technology as possible. “People come to us to create seamlessness among their technology,” says Otto Benson, president of Modern Home Systems.
Intelligent Illumination In constant development, lighting design from a technological perspective is particularly noteworthy. “Lighting control has become a huge part of our industry,” Benson shares. “We have the capability to create scenes with your lighting, whether that be to fit your schedule or for the lights to naturally dim and brighten depending on the actual sunlight coming through the home.”

Made in America SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
For many, the phrase “Made in America” forms an image: a craftsman bent over a workbench, focused on his latest passion project. But it also embodies innovation and an industrial spirit; a belief in taking risks and an unwillingness to compromise on quality. At the heart of it all is a mission to make life better, detail by detail. That is the dream on which this country was founded and the vision that continues to drive it today—one of ownership, safety, freedom and comfort. These are the guiding influences for America’s makers and mavens.

In 2006, a group of talented visionaries established a showroom that would ultimately become what is today the most comprehensive and current stone and tile resource in Southern California. With a continuous flow of fresh and exciting product arriving daily, BDG Design Group is able to satisfy every need, budget and taste level. The BDG team, based in its San Diego showroom and led by company president Larry Neugarten, guides clients in exploring its lineup of American-made products, many of which bear the Marazzi name. BDG is proud to partner with Marazzi, which produces high-quality, competitively priced tile using U.S. workers and materials exclusively. Marazzi operates a brand-new, state-of-the-art, 1.8 million-square-foot facility in Dickson, Tennessee. The location enables shorter lead times and economical shipping throughout the contiguous United States.
“We assist our clients in making their most valuable asset their most loved one.”
FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA “American homeowners are extremely diverse in their views on design and functionality,” Neugarten says. “This is mainly due to cultural differences that exist from coast to coast.” He goes on to share … + The West Coast is shaped by traditional Spanish and Latin American culture. This is often seen in stucco homes and red-tile roofs. + Alternatively, walk the streets of Boston or New York, or even the suburbs surrounding each, and Victorian influences abound. This region is greatly inspired by British and European architecture. Ivy covers many of the buildings, stone and brick construction are prevalent and formal living spaces are characteristic of East Coast homes.

The founders of the United States were driven, in part, by the pursuit of ownership and pride of personage. They believed passionately in the right to possess that which was earned. Today, Brown Safe embodies this vision. “Our clientele is varied, but every one of them has worked hard to get what they have and came to us with a desire to protect it,” says Lynel Brown, the vice president of the family-owned company known to “build the most secure safes and vaults on the planet.” Brown Safe products include biometric fingerprint-reading locks, ballistic armor cladding and state-of-the-art systems; even the U.S. government and military use them. The residential adaptations can be customized in color and finish, and to include features like watch winders and jewelry displays. Bespoke, handcrafted and designed to endure, Brown Safe’s products represent their American heritage with pride.
“Security solutions should be custom. We learn wants and needs, and go from there.”
DONE RIGHT: THE AMERICAN WAY Brown Safe began as a response to the options produced overseas. Owing to how significantly it reduces shipping costs, manufacturers outside of the U.S. typically offer flimsy lockboxes with lightweight construction. After witnessing the ease with which these could be broken into, Fred Brown established Brown Safe. “Every safe and vault we produce is made in our 65,000-square-foot Southern California facility,” says Fred’s daughter, Lynel. “’Made in America’ carries a lot of weight within this industry now, to the point where we have clients in other countries who are willing to pay the added expense of shipping to place their valuables in a Brown Safe product.”

Durability, resilience and strength … tenets of American history, and elements of Moya Living’s philosophy. The company specializes in custom, powder-coated steel cabinetry and furnishings. Every piece is designed, manufactured and shipped from a U.S. facility, and this is something founder and owner Moya O’Neill values. “Being based here enables us to guarantee quality, maintain eco-friendly processes, and support our community,” she says. On the subject of locality, O’Neill enthuses about Moya Living’s next steps. “We will soon be opening a showroom and have teamed up with regional artisans and brands to create the vignettes,” she says. Garreau Designs, John Barber Glass Designs, Siemon & Salazar and Dacor appliances will all be featured. Moya Living also partners with architects and designers across the country, collaboratively producing units in a wide range of styles and color palettes.
“We create cabinetry that endures; it won’t end up in a landfill.”
STATESIDE PERSPECTIVES In many parts of the world, the kitchen is viewed as purely utilitarian. It is often small, functional and offered little attention. But in the U.S., the kitchen is the heart of the home. Being that its units are most frequently commissioned for use in this space, Moya Living finds that ethos to be a major influence. The American homeowner’s viewpoint on aesthetics plays a role, too. “Here, we like to surround ourselves with beauty and style,” O’Neill says. “We want our homes to reflect our personality and chosen lifestyle. We are serious about all aspects of life. Nothing is happenstance.” And so, Moya Living’s eye-catching creations fit right in.

A MOTHER AND SON DESIGN TEAM MATCH TALENTS AND TASTES TO CREATE A FAMILY HOME IN LA QUINTA. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARLENE HALABY
A
s a seasoned professional, interior designer Kristen Smokowski knew she and her husband, Bernard, needed to field multiple proposals before choosing an architect to conceive their new home in La Quinta. Among the firms pitching ideas was Danielian Associates and a young architect there named Andrew Schaffner. Ultimately, the then 26-year-old Schaffner, who also happens to be Smokowski’s son, and the firm prevailed with the winning concept. “We wanted to give everyone equal opportunity, but he nailed it,” she recalls. “It’s so important to find somebody who can translate your vision, and he did that at such a young age.” The couple envisioned a modern take on a Spanishstyle ranch, “which fit that site,” says Smokowski, pointing to the surrounding desert landscape and Santa Rosa Mountains beyond. “It was essential to have something
that felt intrinsic to the landscape.” To satisfy both the family’s wishes and community design guidelines, Schaffner, working with colleagues Michael Boyd and Dale Patton, employed traditional elements such as plasterwork, pillow-cut limestone and reclaimed brick for the parapet trim. He then laced black steel details throughout, such as the floor-to-ceiling windows, and incorporated decorative steel I-beams softened with warm wood inserts. The I-beams, installed under the direction of general contractor Bill Leddy of Sun Vista Construction, were a “trust me” moment with his mother, Schaffner recalls. “But I knew we needed that contemporary detail to come through, to show that this is a new home.” Once the wood insert was in place, “it so perfectly blended in,” says Smokowski. “It gives that hint of a modern, forwardthinking perspective.”
For the La Quinta home she shares with her husband, Bernard, interior designer Kristen Smokowski and her son, architect Andrew Schaffner, collaborated on rooms brimming with warmth and character. In the gallery off the entry, she paired a Noir cabinet from Bassman Blaine with vintage lamps made by her grandmother.

Punctuated by two enclosed courtyards, Schaffner’s open-plan layout invites discovery. “As you walk around the entire home, you have views from both sides,” says Smokowski. “There is this constant unrolling of surprises.” The wonders begin outdoors at the massive custom gate. There glimpses of the front courtyard, planted with palms and bougainvillea (a collaboration between Smokowski and landscape designer Gustavo Magaña of GM Future Designs) are visible through square cutouts. “They make you want to see what’s on the other side,” says Schaffner. “We wanted to create visual interest that keeps you moving to the next space.” Many of the entertainment areas also radiate from this sun-kissed core, including the dining room, which opens wide to uninterrupted vistas of the Chocolate Mountains.
Other social spots such as the kitchen, media room and wine bar flow together. Private spaces flank the rear courtyard, where the master bedroom suite overlooks a reflecting pool, which features a commissioned sculpture by artist America Martin. When composing these interiors, “I like to keep it simple,” explains Smokowski. “Because I think the interior designer’s true job is to create a canvas, so you can fill it with things you love, things that matter.” Colors remain neutral to showcase the family’s vibrant artworks and sentimental pieces, like the lamps made from antique concrete wallpaper rolls by Smokowski’s maternal grandmother. For furnishings, she also favored pared-down yet easy silhouettes in lush fabrics and finishes, from the cashmere B&B Italia sofas in the living room and a family room to the
Perhaps the most coveted perch, the pair of swinging Tidelli sofas by the pool “was one of our essential requirements when we imagined our home,” says Smokowski. She and Schaffner designed the custom sconces in partnership with Hammerton Studio. richly stained dining table by Flexform. “Her approach to design is always about making everything feel comfortable,” notes Schaffner. “She would never choose a cold piece just for appearances.” A vein of familial warmth indeed runs throughout the project, forged through sunny days on the construction site and late-night text exchanges, swapping sketches and ideas. This spirit is perhaps best captured by Schaffner’s unexpected detail for his mother—an exterior fireplace at the entrance. “We were finalizing
the massing,” says Schaffner, who turned 29 this year, as the project was wrapping up. “We thought a chimney would evoke that Spanish Revival look and create a warm welcome for people entering the home.” The surprise worked perfectly. “We light it when we’re home, to let people know they can come by,” says Smokowski. “And I think everybody who comes here enjoys our space. I hope they see the passion and the beauty of a family who knew what they wanted and was actually able to bring it to life.”
The goal for the kitchen’s cabinetry, conceived in concert with Leicht, was to have it look like furnishings to complement the home’s architectural details and collections of art, heirlooms and other finds. Schaffner repeated the same pattern of squares found on the entry gate for wood details around the courtyard. “You can really see the light play where it’s dark,” says Schaffner. ix years ago, OB-GYN Shamsah Amersi was faced with a decision—launch her own medical practice or purchase a home for herself and her son. “I knew I couldn’t buy a house and start my own business because of the big commitments of both of those endeavors,” Shamsah says. “So, I put the house aside.” A few years later, with her practice established, she began to think once more about a home of her own. The sleek, contemporary residence on the Westside of Los Angeles that Shamsah found read more bachelor pad than a dwelling for a mother, teenage son and their dog. “We are the exact opposite profile of who you’d expect to live there by looking at the outside of the house,” she laughs. But the family was excited to turn the interiors of this modern shell into a home that reflected their personalities—sophisticated, fun, and playful. “And it had to be cozy,” she says. While Shamsah knew what she wanted, accomplishing that goal was a different story. “After I moved in, I started getting a little overwhelmed,” she says. “I didn’t know how to fill the spaces so it would feel like a home.” On the advice of a mutual friend, Shamsah turned to designers Kristi Bender and Wendy Schwartz to create both a sanctuary for her and a virtual play land for her son. “She wanted a place that her son could feel proud to have his friends come over— almost like a camp for the kids,” says Bender, “while being something that made her happy.” For the well-traveled family, the home needed to suggest the refined opulence that the pair was used to from their trips abroad. “It had to be luxurious but also still be low-key,” says Schwartz. “Not an in-your-face kind of fancy but to just reflect those amenities that you experience when you’re traveling.” Case in point, the living room: The cocoon of femininity showcases a curvy sofa and chair, both covered in a soft bouclé, and a gray and white wallcovering with a watery vibe that provides the backdrop to a piano where Shamsah’s son, Jaden, practices. “I’ll sit on the sofa with my dog and listen to my son play while I relax,” she says. “It’s a room that I live in because it’s not formal.”
Designers Kristi Bender and Wendy Schwartz used a swivel chair from their Cuff Studio line, upholstered in a Holly Hunt fabric, as the jumping-off point for the living room furnishings of an L.A. house. A custom sofa emphasizes the feeling of a cloud-like space. The smoky glass chandelier is by Lindsey Adelman.

Bender and Schwartz used an Alabama Sawyer live-edge, reclaimed wood table and host bench in the dining room. A collection of vessels by Stone Yard is tucked under the nearby stair. Punctuating the neutral color scheme is a glazed ceramic Elizabeth Orleans piece.
Another defining aspect of the living room is the smoked glass and bronze Lindsey Adelman chandelier, the tones of which complement the gray stone of the fireplace. In fact, lighting frequently takes a starring role—even in the doublestory glass entry where a cluster of rope-wrapped hanging light fixtures can be seen from the street. “She wanted there to be a ‘wow’ factor in there,” says Schwartz. “This did that without being too flashy.” “The lighting throughout is a balance of elements,” observes Bender. The openness of the layout allows the fixtures to play off each other while still creating special moments in each space. Above the dining room table, a paper-plate cloud pendant (Yes, you read that correctly—it’s truly made of paper plates!) is both quirky and unexpected, while adding a layer of softness in relationship to the bronze ginkgo-form chandelier in the adjacent stairwell and a sea anemone-inspired fixture in the den. “They’ve created such a beautiful flow that I love going from space to space because they don’t feel like they contrast,” observes Shamsah. “They all just kind of mesh together into a beautiful oasis.” Other spaces emphasize that retreat-like feeling. Shamsah’s bedroom is a symphony in cream and white, complete with a wingback upholstered headboard, plush carpet and a pair of luscious chairs positioned in front of the fireplace. Across the hall, a cozy den is also outfitted in white hues: An oversize chaise is perfect for curling up with a book and a cup of coffee or glass of wine. After the doctor had poured so much energy into her business, the designers were gratified to give her an abode of her own. “As we chipped away at each space, and she started to have a home that she could feel proud of, she just became happier and happier,” says Schwartz. For her part, Shamsah says, “This home is a source of pride for me and my son because he saw me go through those challenges of owning my own business. It reminds me that hard work and perseverance really pay off—in creating a vision for yourself and your family and working toward it.”
The master bedroom’s custom bed is upholstered in Perennials fabric and rests on a Patterson Flynn Martin shearling rug. Cuff Studio designed the floating nightstands, which are topped with Lostine lamps. The trio of collages is by George Herms.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES FROM HIS ATELIER ON MOUNT BALDY, AN ARTIST AND FURNITURE MAKER CONJURES UP SURPRISING FORMS. WRITTEN BY LAURA MORGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY DICKERSON

C
huck Moffit’s background is in sculpture, but the traditional remove between artwork and viewer seemed too limiting. “Walking around a sculpture and not being able to touch it or interact with it beyond trying not to bump into it, I just felt there was so much more possibility,” says the Mount Baldy-based artist and furniture maker. It’s fitting then that his current work—incorporating rich materials like bronze, glass and leather to yield astonishing yet purposeful objects—straddles the edge between art and design. It is both envelopepushing and utilitarian, with form and function existing in harmony. While Moffit counts the art of Richard Serra and fashions of Hussein Chalayan among his inspirations, Japanese design has also been a reference point, and a 2014-15 LACMA exhibition of Japanese armor from the 12th to the 19th centuries only deepened his fascination. “I didn’t realize for a while how much it stuck with me; I needed to dissect it in my head,” he says. His ideas developed into the pieces shown in an installation at Eric Buterbaugh, “Chuck Moffit: With the Promise of Nectar,” featuring his imposing steel and cast bronze furnishings displayed amid purple dahlias. The artist considers his Oshibana center table from that series—which was influenced by the art of pressing natural elements such as flowers and foliage until they are dry and flat—a bridge to his new creations. “It was part of what samurais did to understand harmony and patience,” explains Moffit. “The craft is certainly important, but, for me, there also is a sense of ceremony and magic.” Those qualities are apparent in Moffit’s series, “Armor Amor,” which debuted in October. The collection is an evolution of his previous work but finds the artist playing with subtler details and softer shapes, introducing glass and leather elements as surface materials. “As the title hints, ‘Armor Amor’ explores both sides of the coin: protection and vulnerability,” he says. In addition to the case goods, tables, seating and lighting that he’s known for, Moffit also produced a series of sculptural tabletop objects in the form of bronze vessels. Despite his stunning results—his pieces have been shown at Christopher Grimes Projects and the Hammer Museum and are available at J.F. Chen in L.A. and De Sousa Hughes in San Francisco, to name a few—Moffit’s route from conception to finished product isn’t always a smooth one. He’s come to appreciate the constant problem solving, the mistakes-turned-welcome surprises, the tension. “I like to make things that are, at times, confusing to me—I’ll shoot for something and then pull the rug out from under myself,” he admits. “It’s just a battle in the studio sometimes. And it’s not necessarily me winning. But the piece has to win. I have to make sure it’s right in the end.”

BACK to BASICS RENOVATION TRIUMPHS OVER DEMOLITION, TRANSFORMING A MIDCENTURY LAGUNA BEACH HOME. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARYN MILLET
ARCHITECTURE / SCOTT LAIDLAW, LAIDLAW SCHULTZ ARCHITECTS INTERIOR DESIGN / RAILI CLASEN, RAILI CA DESIGN
W
hile Palm Springs and the Hollywood Hills are more traditionally associated with Southern California’s midcentury modern style, Orange County’s beach cities were equally influenced by the aesthetic. “There are gems on the coast, but they’re a little different: They have an incredible beach vibe and beg to be walked around in barefoot,” says architect Scott Laidlaw, who teamed with designer Raili Clasen to update one of these treasures, a residence by noted architect Chris Abel in Emerald Bay. Homeowners Karin and David Bock had planned on a modest remodel when they purchased the 1960s abode. “We were going to do a quick spruce up and save as many midcentury details as we could,” says Clasen. But, as renovation projects are wont to do, the scope grew, and the couple ultimately embarked on a two-year effort to restore the home’s original spirit. Changing fashion had not been kind to the house, notes Clasen, recalling the wainscoting and dark wood floors they removed with the help of general contractor Michael Ensign of New West Home. “It was 1980s Newport Beach inserted into a classic post and beam house,” says Laidlaw. “We talked a lot about history and taking the home back to the way it was, which got the Bocks excited.” It takes a certain kind of person to live in a midcentury house, notes Laidlaw, and his clients are those people. “These houses are simple and livable, but they force you to give up on the laundry list of needs,” says the architect. “That’s what’s so unique about the Bocks: They’re on their way to being empty nesters and had no interest in enlarging the home. It was a breath of fresh air.” Without moving main rooms and by simply opening and reorganizing the circulation of the floor plan, “it became easy

to make design decisions,” Laidlaw says. “We removed an interior wall between the stair and kitchen and replaced half walls around the stair with an open rail design.” The living room fireplace was relocated to the center of the room where it conveniently screens Highway 1. “We went around and around on that one, but it was a natural spot,” he adds. “It all just worked so nicely.” The only additions were a slight extension of the master bathroom and a lower-level deck. Clasen reports that the couple “didn’t want the home to be over-the-top or too serious.” They had just two key rules for the interiors: midcentury modern and organic. “The kitchen was a lesson in restraint,” she explains. “We didn’t want to go George Jetson—though The Jetsons is my favorite cartoon—so we went with white Heath Ceramics tiles that are just so perfect for this house.” Other artisanal touches include a leather-wrapped Apparatus Studio light above the dining table and low-profile Croft House sofa in the living area—all chosen to not distract from the spectacular vistas of the bay and Emerald Point. “We started and ended with the view,” says Clasen. “Nothing could get in the way. Your eyes go straight out.” To keep the emphasis on the scenery, the designer chose a palette of neutral, natural hues. “Karin didn’t want a lot of color, but David did,” she continues. The compromise was a gallery of vibrant surfboards and occasional touches of blue and green. A vintage Walter Knoll sofa in olive leather anchors the family room, and Clasen painted the lower half of the Bocks’ bedroom walls charcoal. “I love half walls, I do them in most of my projects!” she says. It also creates a perfect foil for a pair of brass sconces, especially since the designer notes, “There’s no attic or crawl space in this house, so we couldn’t do a lot of ceiling lights.” And while Clasen led the design, Karin proved a reliable understudy. “She had opinions and ideas and loved being part of the process,” says the designer, pointing to the blackand-white works by the stairwell. “We gave her direction, and she found the artist,” shares Clasen. “We said, ‘Find a little collection of vintage oil paintings that we can hang by your bed!’ And she’d go right out and do it.” Karin even sourced the couple’s oak and rattan bed. “She didn’t want the place to look like every other house.” It doesn’t—it’s a standout thanks to the talent of Clasen and Laidlaw. “I geek out on these sorts of projects. If it’s got good bones, let’s save the house,” says Clasen. And that’s a sentiment the architect shares. “People appreciate what we did here because this house is something,” says Laidlaw. “I like reuse anyway, but the greenest thing you can do is to do less. It feels good when you’re done—like you did the right thing.”
From the upper deck of their Laguna Beach home, newly renovated by architect Scott Laidlaw, David and Karin Bock can take in unimpeded views of Emerald Bay. The side chair, the settee and coffee table are all from Design Within Reach. Landscape designer Laurie Patterson, of LP Gardenworks, chose the plantings.

Lighting the space is a Workstead sconce. Clasen had the photo, taken by a family member, blown up and framed by Best Framing.

Nancy Giangeruso has worked in residential and commercial design, development and construction since the early 1980s. Over the years, she often heard those around her lament in a similar way: “If only I had someone to manage the back office so I can get back to doing what I love.” And so, an idea formed and a firm was founded. “Designers, custom builders, general contractors and architects should spend 80 percent of their time following their own passions of building, creating or designing, which will automatically result in building their businesses and increasing their customer base,” Giangeruso says. “Let us do the rest.”

Meet a Few of Our Members
The decision to join BCD-it was crystal clear after meeting Nancy Giangeruso. Her mentorship, wisdom and 30-plus years of business expertise have not only inspired us to be better, more efficient designers, but also given us the tools to be successful businesswomen. With endless resources, such as business coaching, social media management and full access to multiple state-of-the-art design studios, our membership with BCD-it has enhanced our business and professionalism significantly. We also love that we are able to spend more of our time focusing on design, while Nancy and her team help facilitate everything else, from purchasing to installation. We are thrilled to be at this chapter in our careers and eternally grateful to be members of this team!
Joining BCD-it was a perfect next step for my business. The resources that Nancy has compiled over 30 years benefit me and my clients. The exposure to new brands and people in the industry, and access to support, aren’t easy things to find. But Nancy brought them all together, in one company. BCD-it has allowed me to create a mastermind group to share ideas, get advice and network. The back office systems Nancy offers help take tasks off of my plate and leave me time to do what I love— design! I look forward to taking my interior design business to the next level with BCD-it supporting me along the way. –Tracy Berman of tracybermaninteriors@gmail.com
