EDITOR’S LETTER

FURNITURE A Love Story
My first furniture crush was a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Chan coffee table, which I spied in the home of my great uncle at the tender age of 9. I stood in awe, taking in its patinated bronze, pewter and enamel village scene and octagonal bronze base with blue-enamel inserts. That table certainly kicked off my deep affection for all things decorative... and quite possibly nudged me toward my future career. Philip and Kelvin were father-and-son creative collaborators who fashioned exceptional art pieces that were incorporated into furniture. Their dedication to craft and original design is something to be admired. This issue of Luxe is our love letter to furniture, and those tenants that we value most— craftsmanship, collaboration, originality and heritage. When you’re next out shopping for furnishings to add to your home, make it something special that’s created with great care and attention—a piece that may even impress a curious 9-year-old.

Where is that Chan table today? It sits handsomely in my father’s living room. I still have my eyes on it… this heritage piece of art that helped shape a life.

Golden TOUCH
Nearly two centuries into business, each Rinck design still begins with a hand drawing, as seen in the walnut and nickel armchair (shown), a star of the new contemporary collection. “At a time of disposable consuming, we need to go back to made-to-last products with meaning,” says Vice President Valentin Goux.
WITH ITS NEW CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION, RINCK CELEBRATES A SINGULAR LEGACY OF HANDICRAFT.
Amidst the bustle of Paris’s 12th arrondissement sits an iconic atelier and within it, a trove of hand drawings dating back 180 years. Spanning styles from Napoleon III to Art Nouveau and Louis XV, Rinck’s design archive is an unwitting history of French furniture. In the age of iCloud storage and CAD renderings, the monumental collection presents an anomaly, but then, so does the company it chronicles. A true ensemblier décorateur, Rinck is the only French furniture and fabrication company still designing and manufacturing in-house today. Its eponymous watercolors and coated paper sketches are the first indication of an emphasis on touch-of-hand that guides each creation from seed idea through finished product—an ethos echoed in its outposts and reverberated by leadership. Notes Valentin Goux, the second-generation vice president of the family-run firm, “We believe our designers need to be able to draw to understand proportion and scale, and that’s not about to change. Artistic drawings are still of utmost importance.” With three ateliers—one in Ardennes dedicated to cabinetmaking and one in Drôme for boiserie and millwork, in addition to the Paris design headquarters—Rinck’s specialties run the gamut from marquetry, veneers and gilding, to latticework, ornamental carving and trompe l’oeil. Employed throughout the workshops is a network of master craftspeople, some disciples of classic cabinetmaking schools and others from Les Compagnons, the Medieval-rooted, UNESCOprotected group of artisans who train in the field in towns across France. With design and build talents under the same roof, each piece becomes a dynamic meeting of the minds. “Once we get to prototyping, the designers work with the craftsmen weekly to refine the designs and make them perfect,” shares Goux. While Rinck’s intimate, tactile approach stands as testament to handcrafted tradition, the company is ever looking forward in both execution and creative vision, evidenced by its sleek new contemporary collection—the first modern ensemble in 50 years. Spurred by an off-the-cuff conversation over a team lunch, a beloved 1930s sycamore table was unearthed from the archives, in turn inspiring a full dining room suite of table, armchairs, side chairs, console and sconces. Edging on modernist in gleaming French walnut and black nickel, a dash of Rinck’s token classicism is still evident in the foliateembossed velvet upholstery. “It’s very 19th century, but in a fresh way,” notes Goux. “These are the kind of pieces you keep for generations.”

It Takes TWO ARTIST SUSAN HABLE REFLECTS ON HER LONGTIME PARTNERSHIP WITH HICKORY CHAIR. AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK HEAGNEY
Ten years ago, our family pulled up stakes, left New York City, and settled in Athens, Georgia. At the time, the economy was in peril, and we wondered: How are we going to refocus our textile brand, Hable Construction, and deal with the changes? Simultaneously, Hickory Chair was looking for new ways to innovate. The timing was right, so we came onboard to create its first designer fabric collection. We had been making textiles for a few years, but to grow as a company, we knew we had to expand—and I thought we should try creating a furniture collection. My sister and business partner, Katharine, and I love to see the inner workings of things. That curiosity is at the core of everything we’ve done. I knew furniture would be no different.
I always think of the saying, “ask for what you need,” which is such a good reminder in life. Positive things have come out of transition periods for us. Hickory Chair was nearing its 100th anniversary in business, and wanted to keep pushing forward. (I think that’s the key to its success.) In 2015, we launched our first furniture collection, and with it, I tried to create foundation pieces that we could add to later. I approached it like building a house—after all, if the bones aren’t good, what’s the point? We’re now on our third collection, and when I look at it, I see a range of influences: Scandinavian, Italian, Shaker and American Primitive, to name a few. The pieces are layered and unpredictable. As I get older, I think about how my home reflects who I am and the places
I’ve been. There are stories in every piece. It’s not just furniture to me. I wasn’t trained as a textile or furniture designer. My work started because I’m a fine artist. The only way my sister and I knew how to commercialize my artwork was to turn drawings into patterns and patterns into textiles and then make products. That fine art connection shows in the new hand-painted pieces for Hickory Chair. Whatever custom finish you dream of, the company can do. Relationships are everything in this business and the partnership with Hickory Chair has been one of equal give and take—you can feel that with the people and see it in the craftsmanship. If we artists can collaborate with companies that are thoughtful in the same ways we are, it makes it all worthwhile.

LIAIGRE’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR FRAUKE MEYER ON CREATIVITY AND THE VALUE OF ORIGINALITY. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
If there is one piece that encapsulates Liaigre’s polished yet independent spirit, it is the brand’s sculptural Nagato stool inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s “Endless Column.” The iconic work, originally created by Christian Liaigre in 1986 from a solid piece of oak, was recently reinvented in a limited-edition bronze with a smooth black patina and wood print—a look that is at once brutalist and refined. “We rarely draw from our archives, and privilege fresh creative reflection for each project. Yet this piece combines minimalism and poetry, elegantly entering the domestic sphere,” says Liaigre’s Creative Director Frauke Meyer. As with the refreshed Nagato stool, independent thinking has been at the core of every piece since the company’s inception in the 1980s—and that’s what defines Liaigre. “My aim is to emphasize our French and Parisian identity, in which everything is well thought out, structured and finished, while still encouraging disruption, surprises and a break from the expected,” says Meyer, who likens the brand’s creative process to that of iconic fashion houses, such as Dries Van Noten, Azzedine Alaïa and Pierre Hardy. “We believe beauty is found through special attention
LX_COM30_Radar_Originality.indd 84
“It is important to interpret designs to fit into the context of current times,” says Liaigre Creative Director Frauke Meyer, an approach evident in pieces such as the Orient Suspension lamp (top, left), Touareg bench (center) and recently reissued bronze Nagato stool (bottom, right).
to ergonomics, usability and the touch and feel of materials exuding texture, comfort and luxury.” Unmoved by imitation designs, Meyer says it is the company’s strict attention to detail and proportion that set it apart. “The creation of each Liaigre design requires skill from expert hands,” says Meyer. “Whether brushed, sandblasted wood or full-grain leather tanned in France, the mastery of the craft is present throughout the production of each piece or architectural element.” A case in point is Liaigre’s lacquered panels and furnishings, where the finish is applied in as many as seven layers to achieve just the right sheen. This notion is also apparent in the brand’s sourcing, which involves employing “tree hunters” to discover the finest wood material from French forests. From inception to finished piece, Meyer attests: “Luxury is affirmed in every detail.”

STICKLEY REVITALIZES AMERICAN ARTS AND CRAFTS FURNITURE FOR A NEW GENERATION. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN S. REARDON
For more than a century, Stickley has made high-end hardwood furniture and fine upholstery. Now, with Director of Design Marissa Brown at the creative helm, the company has expanded to include fresh takes on the Mission look, as well as a midcentury-inspired line. Here, Brown describes how the brand’s history and devotion to craft informs her work. How do you honor Stickley’s heritage while moving the needle forward? I try to stay true to the company DNA and the components of a Stickley piece: the square spindles, the use of reverse taper leg details and the exposed joinery. One thing that inspired me was the ability to make furniture out of solid wood construction with techniques that have been used since the Stickley brothers were alive. Moving the brand into the future was about respecting that, while developing forms that felt more current in proportion.
Playing with iconic shapes must have been intimidating at first. It was scary; the pieces are perfect! It’s like trying to alter a Steinway piano. The horizontal and vertical components are so important in Mission-style furniture, but how do you modernize the look? I didn’t want to lose sight of what made them work, but I also wanted to soften them a little. You’ve mentioned that a trip to Hans Wegner’s studio was formative to your career. How does Danish design influence your work? I love the sculptural aspect of the Danish makers. During that era, woodworkers put so much thought into creating designs that not only looked good, but functioned beautifully. I like integrating those ideas into Stickley—that pieces should float in a room and be enjoyed from 360 degrees. We hear something new is coming for spring…Yes! This April at High Point we’re planning to debut a curated group of eclectic pieces. While designs are still evolving, the idea is to open up an offering of single items that use new materials and are interesting objects in their own right. On your wish list? The dining table from the Walnut Grove collection. I have three daughters, so I’d love to have pieces that will become family heirlooms.
Marissa Brown in the new Park Slope Accent Chair in the Stickley factory in Manlius, New York. Alongside Brown’s award-winning update is a 1989 reissue of the Spindle Chair, a Mission favorite patented by Gustav Stickley in 1905.

THE INSIDER SOPHIE GOINEAU
In only a few years, Sophie Goineau has made her mark on Los Angeles. The Quebec native renovated the Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood and just designed Porta Via restaurant in Palisades Village, and its pink Parisian style was an instant hit. Here, Luxe gets to know more about the designer. sophiegoineau.com Describe your style. Layers. I have a narrative way of working, so depending on the location, I’m inspired by history, the age of the house and the client’s vision. A space has to tell a story—it’s visual poetry. What do you love about L.A.’s design scene? The energy of the last five years has made an edgy mix of international cultures. That pushes people to create, to go further. We have the arrival of the Edition on Sunset—a big design statement—and many art and design fairs now. People are thirsty for new things. Where do you see design going? Calming palettes and curved geometries. Organic, natural lines and planes. Intimacy. Places you can dream in, escape to, fall in love in. Places that resonate with us. 090 / luxesource.com

COLLABORATION SISTER PARISH X COUNTRY FLOORS
Venerable Los Angeles firm Country Floors has partnered with legendary East Coast design firm Sister Parish for a bold new line of ceramic tiles. “A trip to Portugal a few years ago sparked our interest in transferring our patterns onto a tile body,” explains Eliza Crater, creative director of Sister Parish Design and Parish’s great-granddaughter. Offered in six patterns with four coordinating field colors, the options are plentiful. “There are endless possibilities, but my own first application is going to be in my kitchen,” continues Crater, who also envisions them used in such varied applications as powder rooms and porticos. “The beauty of the collection is that the tiles can be used in quieter ways for a pop of interest, or completely enveloped and paired with our corresponding Sister Parish fabrics for a contemporary take on a toile room.” countryfloors.com

The first residential tower in West Hollywood’s Arts and Design District debuts later this year when the 1962 Los Angeles International Design Center is transformed into contemporary homes by celebrated architecture firm Olson Kundig. “Saving and repurposing this building is not only important, but a thought-provoking design exercise,” says principal/owner Tom Kundig. “You’re retaining the energy that went into the building when it was originally constructed, but you also preserve the historical energy of the building, which was built in an interesting time and incorporates great architecture.” The property offers 40 tower residences and eight single-family homes, plus all the amenities of a luxury hotel. Famed eatery Madeo, previously located in the building, will also be reopening. 8899beverlyblvd.com

Palm Springs’ new hotel, Dive, delivers all the playful spirit a vacationer could want—but with a twist. Instead of going the midcentury route popular in the desert, Santa Monica-based designer Vanessa Schreiber looked to the French Riviera for a 1960s St. Tropez vibe. The adults-only property centers on a grassy courtyard with lounge areas, a pool and an orchard. Its 11 guest rooms include brightly tiled bathrooms and outdoor patios with oversize daybeds, plus surprise design elements such as a Christian Lacroix ceiling mural and a Belle Epoch elevator transformed into a canopy bed. The Peacock Lounge offers self-service cocktails throughout the day, while on weekends a rolling cart makes its way around the property proffering small bites and beverages. divepalmsprings.com
SHOPS + SHOWROOMS
L.A. showroom Una Malan has opened a second location in Montecito (525 San Ysidro Road) in partnership with designer Birgit Klein. “Bee and I are friends and decided to open a showroom together, offering the collections I represent in L.A. as well as her interior design talents,” says Malan. Seattle-based designer Rocky Rochon has arrived in West Hollywood (306 N. Robertson Blvd.), making available his design services, furnishings and line of custom paints (below). Just a stone’s throw away is Italian furniture company Molteni&C|Dada’s new flagship (147 N. Robertson Blvd.), designed by the company’s creative director, renowned Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen. Also new to West Hollywood is Ben Soleimani’s eponymous showroom (8626 Melrose Ave.), an immersive offering of the veteran retailer’s signature contemporary furnishings and rugs (above).
LAUNCH New Ravenna has released 20 new mosaic designs as part of San Diego-based interior designer Paul Schatz’s Miraflores Collection. “Creative Director Cean Irminger asked me to return to the studio in Virginia and work with her to create additional patterns using new materials, fabrication methods and equipment,” says Schatz, who, over the course of a year, pulled creative inspiration from childhood summers in Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende as well as more recent travels through Europe and the Middle East. The new handcrafted tiles emphasize natural materials including stone, shell, brass and 24-karat gold glass, and are available in myriad colorways and textures. newravenna.com

THE BRIGHT WAY 90 YEARS OF AMERICAN ARTISTRY
OVER THE PAST NINE DECADES,
Bright Chair has established itself as a home for dedicated artisans who practice their time-honed skills without compromise. Founded in 1927 and acquired by the Gottlieb family in 1963, Bright is one of only a handful of family-owned and -operated companies producing traditionally crafted furniture, all made in America. In 1963, Bright moved into its own facility in Middletown, New York, allowing it to begin the important step of manufacturing frames and controlling all aspects of production. This vertical integration provides complete control of production, affording the versatility to customize to meet client needs and delivery requirements, while still offering attention to detail and assured quality control. “This is my house, but it was built on my father’s foundation,” says Bright Chair President, Stan Gottlieb. “And if my grandfather, the first of four generations in furniture, who came over from Europe as a master craftsman, walked through our plant today, he would not find our process unfamiliar.” Initially producing only commercial furniture, Gottlieb joined forces with furniture designer Douglas Levine in the 1990s, and together, they expanded the product offerings to cater to the executive suites as well as the residential market. As the residential side of the business grew, it gave rise to the birth of The Bright Group at the turn of the century. “For the first time, we opened a showroom specifically aimed at the residential market, which is quite different from where we came from. People want to see and feel the furniture in context alongside other ancillary offerings like lighting and case goods,” Gottlieb says.
With this evolution, Bright began creating strategic alliances with manufacturers that shared its mantra—independently-owned and -operated American companies producing only highly crafted, quality products. Today, The Bright Group represents 21 lines and has four showrooms across the United States—Boston, Chicago, Dallas and New York, as well as alliances with other premier showrooms in territories throughout the United States and abroad. Attention to detail and exact tailoring have become hallmarks of a piece of Bright furniture. Run your hand over one and you’ll know—it’s the feel of great tradition with a most modern sensibility.

Functional and deliberate, outdoor spaces are where most people spend their highly valued, quality free time. Thus, comfort is a vital component of any outdoor design … and a feeling captured perfectly with Lloyd Flanders furniture. “All of our designs are adapted to the increasingly casual lifestyle and the desire for comfort with generous seats, plush cushioning, the incorporation of motion, and the latest performance fabrics and hardware,” president Dudley Flanders says. Using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and equipment, combined with more than 100 years of tradition and furniture knowledge, Lloyd Flanders produces the finest American outdoor furniture. Key to preserving their revered, heirloom quality is proper material selection and upkeep. Of the latter, Warren Juliano, senior vice president of sales and marketing, offers this tip: “Vacuum or use a soft brush on woven material and cushions to remove organic material and loosen surface soil, then rinse with a mild detergent and clean water.”
“Combining the best of the old with the improvements of the new yields heirloom-quality furniture.” 2

PROFESSIONAL TOUCH “Hiring a professional is important to make sure that the best materials are chosen for the right environment,” says vice president of sales Bryan Echols. Outdoor furniture is made from a wide range of materials that vary significantly in quality and durability. It’s vital to choose the right material for the particular climate. Professionals are also adept at maximizing the usage of a space. Many outdoor areas serve a variety of functions, so the furniture and accessories need to be flexible, whether the main purpose of the area is entertaining, relaxing or dining.

NORTHERN LIGHTS, MAGNETIC NORTH POLE
5
For a dramatic display of the Northern Lights, head to the Nordics and parts of Alaska and Canada to see bright colors illuminate the night sky. The Aurora Borealis starts when the sun releases charged particles that react with gaseous atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere. The gas, shifted by solar wind, dictates the vibrant hues that dance across the sky— neon greens emerge from low-altitude oxygen molecules and blues and purples result from nitrogen. Consider multiple trips: No two spectacles are the same.

INNER CIRCLE NAMIB DESERT, AFRICA
How do miles of mysterious rings of vegetation come to cover the dry ground of southern Africa’s Namib Desert? Folklore believes these ‘fairy circles’ to be footprints from the gods, while scientists cite the desert’s complex ecosystem for the peculiar markings. Regardless of how they got there, the repetition of spherical shapes creates a hypnotizing, polka-dot like motif, giving those with a bird’s-eye view an expansive, visual reminder that curved lines are always ‘in.’

ICE, ICE BABY BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA
7
A contradicting play of fire and ice takes place in Alberta’s Banff National Park as winter sets in. When the lakes freeze over, bubbles rising toward the surface are stopped in their tracks. These particular bubbles are full of methane—the gas is emitted by bacteria living below the surface after consuming organic matter—and highly flammable if released near an open fire. Undisturbed, these frozen forms provide a study in motion and, more importantly, show how stunning science can be.

Soaring mountaintops are a feast for the eyes, but the Zhangye Danxia range in northern, central China boasts a particular beauty with brilliant stripes of reds, pinks and oranges—appearing as if the façade was painted with a brush. The effect is the result of some 24 million years ago, when deposits of sandstone and other minerals formed these intentional-looking layers. Combined with desert conditions, wind and erosion, the rock formations are regarded as one of the most beautiful landscapes in China.

T
he Dryborough Estate renovation by Kelly Ferm Home breathes new life into these historical grounds. The 1918 Mission Revival-style home was in need of a fresh look. With the clients on board, Ferm stayed true to the historical architecture
of the home while layering thoughtful new details into the interiors of the main kitchen and breakfast room. She kept the overall design bright and airy, but Ferm believes that a little pop of color can go a long way, so the chartreuse taffeta draperies were a no-brainer. See more of this renovation on the Kelly Ferm Home website. INTERIOR DESIGN

SWIM SEASON A picturesque pool house becomes a family’s destination for year-round entertaining. Architect Louise Brooks of Brooks & Falotico walks us through the project. brooksandfalotico.com How did you decide on the location of the pool house? The pool already existed, and the area looks out to beautiful rolling hills, so we were set from the beginning on where we were going to construct the pool house. Even though it’s only a two-minute walk from the main house, it very much feels like a destination for the clients, a family with four children. They feel like they’re on vacation when they go over there. What was on the clients’ wish list? The homeowners really wanted a full working kitchen here, meaning a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave and sink since they use it often throughout the year for everything from Super Bowl celebrations to sleepover parties. Since it’s meant for entertaining, I wanted to keep the kitchen design straightforward with as little maintenance and upkeep as possible. We actually started with the creamy man-made countertops that can weather any storm or family gathering, and the rest of the scheme stayed in a similar neutral palette. We love the bright and airy ambience. The demand for indoor/outdoor spaces continues to grow and, in this case, I went with retractable doors and big windows that stay open during the warmer months for a light and fresh effect. I also chose materials that are very durable and aren’t precious. We kept finishes to a minimum and the entire kitchen is soft, open and very welcoming; it’s all about bringing the outside in here.

HIGH LIFE
For a spectacular patio kitchen in the Hamptons, Edmund Hollander, president of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, started with functionality. “Think about where you want your dining table to be in relation to other living areas and then look at aesthetics and what you want to see when you’re in the space,” he explains. Tucking the dining setting on the side of the house protects it from seaside winds and also takes advantage of beautiful views across a salt pond. hollanderdesign.com

CHILL OUT
St. Charles New York, the maker of luxury kitchens, has launched its first-ever kitchen collection consisting of three curated series that incorporate a distinct variety of finishes, woods, hardware and paint colors. Creative Director Karen Williams notes that “as kitchens have evolved from back of house to the most significant rooms of the home, the choices have become endless and overwhelming,” but the ultimate goal of this new program is to demystify the kitchen design process for the client. Shown is STC No. 1, which draws on the brand’s rich 85-year-old design history while simultaneously ushering in a more minimal, sleek style. stcharlesnewyork.com

The kitchen and bar on this Del Mar property serves as ground zero for the casual indoor/outdoor lifestyle that epitomizes Southern California. Duan Tran, partner at KAA Design, understood that entertaining here was a priority for his clients so he decided to embrace the grill rather than hide it. “We designed the area to support the social aspects of grilling and hanging with friends, so it became a focal feature within the space,” Tran reveals. Interior designer Mark Williams, who collaborated on the project, customized the hanging lanterns and barstools. kaadesigngroup.com

THE LOOK / THE REPORT
In this Beverly Hills, California, home, by McClean Design and Craig R. Williams Construction, designer Lindsay Chambers crafted a serene, earth-toned master bedroom to play off the European oak floors and ceiling wainscot. Bridging the divide between the interior and exterior are three walls of bronze-plated, stackable sliding glass doors from All Metal Window Corp. Notes Chambers of the full effect, “The bedroom is meant to feel like its own spa retreat.

THE GREAT INDOORS With each spring comes the desire to reconnect with the natural world. But rather than restrict the approach to the shifting seasons, we’re taking a year-round perspective to living with the outdoors. After all, ecotherapy is known to have restorative benefits, so why silo its riches? Here, we uncover a panoply of evergreen inspiration, from immersive architectural details and honest materials to magical spaces that blur the lines between indoor and out—like this bedroom by designer Lindsay Chambers, which seemingly floats like a lily pad above a saline pool.

INTO THE WOODS
For a Seattle couple who requested that their home feel like a virtual walk in the woods, DeForest Architects imagined a glass-and-blackened-steel structure cantilevering over the forest floor, canopied from all sides by evergreen trees and boasting postcard views of the Puget Sound. Recalls designer Andy Beers of Ore Studios, who later guided the “treehouse” through interior finishes and furnishings, “What was astonishing about construction was that when drywall went up, it changed the character of the house very little: It continued to feel like you were outside. And even though you’re floating and surrounded on all sides by glass, there’s a real sense of coziness and privacy.” deforestarchitects.com; orestudios.com

When tasked with outfitting a mintcondition screened-in porch in New England, the husband-and-wife design team of Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller adopted a less is more approach to celebrate the simplicity of its comforts—namely, shade, breeze and verdant views. Where the custom Groundwork table from Mecox Gardens offers a literal interpretation of bringing the outdoors in with its whitewashed tree trunk base, a zinc top and complementary DWR resin dining chairs keep the scheme both contemporary and stalwart. Of the considered mix, Carrier shares, “We wanted to pay homage to the home’s original Victorian architecture, while also addressing the owner’s desire for a more modern look and family-friendly materials.” carrierandcompany.com

CLEAR VISION “You can’t escape the weather when you live in the Scottish Highlands,” says Petra Palumbo. “It’s in your face, all-consuming, ever-changing, extreme and unbelievably beautiful.” This reverence for Mother Nature is evident in the U.K.-based homeware designer’s collections both in motifs and mission. Take, for example, signature pieces like the crystal orange jug and tumbler (shown), which are made to order, hand-painted in natural inks and shipped in recycled packaging. “We take a holistic approach to sustainability,” says Palumbo. “We are certainly not perfect and have many areas we need to refine, but it’s a start.” petrapalumbo.com

COASTAL CHARM Libations look best in a bar cart, and indoor-outdoor spaces are no exception to the rule. Consider the weatherworthy drinks trolley from the new Arc by Winch Design for Summit Furniture collection. Combining Winch’s roots in yacht design and Summit’s dedication to the finest sustainable teak, the debut collaboration offers an elegant take on seaside style, evidenced in its sleek finishes and rounded edges, and echoed in its name—Arc—a nod to maritime shapes like the lines of latitude and longitude, the curve of the horizon and the silhouette of a full sail. summitfurniture.com; winchdesign.com

While a rarity stateside, solariums are a cultural mainstay in Europe. Inspired by spaces enjoyed during frequent travels throughout Switzerland and Germany, a couple asked their longtime designer, Christina Roughan, to devise a glass addition off the back of their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. A collaboration between Roughan Interiors, Argus Development and Jones Byrne Margeotes Partners, the immersive enclosure features three walls of bi-fold doors with remotecontrol screens, and an open-concept furniture scheme fit for lounging, dining and entertaining in every season. “Last Fourth of July, it hosted guests for fireworks and during the winter solstice, the family will watch old movies and stargaze,” says the designer, adding, “It’s quite impressive to watch TV while lounging upon a heated floor and enjoying snow falling all around you.” roughaninteriors.com; argusdevelopmentllc.com; jbmparch.com

PAST PERFECT
On a hillside cradling Tennessee’s Pickwick Lake, Asheville, North Carolina-based firm Carlton Edwards fashioned a winter garden room for enjoying the dramatic vista. Drawing inspiration from great American lake lodges built in the 1930s and ’40s, textured fieldstone masonry and turned timber columns were employed to lend a nostalgic feel. But where the architectural envelope channels woodsy encampments of yesteryear, modern comforts abound in details like ceiling heaters, a steel-clad fireplace, and lowslung, slipcovered furnishings, which mingle with insouciance amongst indoor plantings. Notes firm Design Director Jeff Edwards, “It’s a nod to the past, but a rustic, modern interpretation. We wanted the room to feel warm and inviting—like an old friend.” carlton-edwards.com

The long VIEW Scandinavia has long been recognized as a leader in sustainability—a concept embraced as a lifestyle rather than a catchphrase. So, who better to turn to for a lesson in green living than the fourth-generation owner of Dinesen, Denmark’s 120-year-old premier wood flooring company? “The core of our business is the excellent raw wood, and that commits us to constantly making an effort to use the material in the best possible way,” says owner Thomas Dinesen. “We are fully aware of the effort that precedes the tree before it reaches our hands.” dinesen.com

WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY
⊳ FOREST THROUGH THE TREES In an era of speed and convenience, Dinesen takes a refreshingly measured approach. “The logs we get are typically between 80 and 200 years old,” says owner Thomas Dinesen, adding that it requires generations of foresters in France and in Germany’s Black Forest (shown) to nourish trees for the resulting floor boards and wall paneling. Plus, he adds, “You only cut trees when it is beneficial for the land.” Case in point: a German supplier whose forest has been in the family since the year 1600. “This is only possible if you think ahead of your time,” says Dinesen. “Gather what you need from nature but leave something for future generations.”
AGE OF REASON ⊲ Rather than reject imperfections, Dinesen embraces the natural blemishes resulting from a tree’s 150-year-old life span, as seen here in the expressive Heart Oak panel. “The outcome is unfathomably beautiful planks that both aesthetically, and in strength, last for many generations,” says Dinesen. That same philosophy applies once installed. “Our planks become more beautiful when used. Sliding your hand over a worn plank or railing and noticing the grains of the wood and the growth rings creates a special feeling of well-being—a bit like a face full of wrinkles and creases reflecting a life well lived.”
LX_COM30_TheLook_TheReport.indd 167
▲ HYGGE LIFE Call it what you want, but creating a calm, cozy and stress-free home environment tops many a design wish list, and Dinesen wholeheartedly subscribes to this notion. “For us, creating well-being is very important. The more uneasy your daily life becomes, the more you will need a place that creates peace and balance,” says the owner. “That is what our wood can do.” An oak plank arranged in a herringbone pattern, such as the one shown above, can evoke that elusive sense of serenity.

THE GREAT DIVIDE
Light and shadow. Concrete and glass. Often, the most impactful indoor-outdoor designs come down to simple dualities—a hallmark of architect Scott Mitchell’s projects. In celebration of his work’s first volume (Scott Mitchell Houses, Rizzoli), we asked the California architect to speak to his distinct approach to connecting the natural and built environments. scottmitchellstudio.com Best way to incorporate nature: With deep overhangs and a continuity of material planes that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Design should be experienced... As a narrative. As with film or music, the journey begins with the arrival sequence. From there, there is less a concern for a formality gradient as for a flowing connectivity of spaces. Dream project: A public aquarium. Up next: A boutique hotel on Phillip Island, Australia, and a modern farm outside Toronto. Every home needs: The psychology of shelter. A house should be a safe and comfortable harbor from the world.

“ Outdoor living spaces elevate the feel of a home, in any aesthetic.”
TO LAST A LIFETIME Windows and doors from Albertini are designed to endure. Still, a little maintenance goes a long way in helping them do so. Perry advises particular care be taken for wood products, which should undergo routine cleaning and oiling.
THE VALUE OF A SPECIALIST Employing a niche, expert manufacturer and installer in the sourcing of windows and doors can be pivotal, especially when a home includes indoor-outdoor layouts. Why? + I nstallation and maintenance are top-notch. “Our teams have mastered the intensive training required for our products and excel at providing the quality service that defines the Albertini brand,” Perry says. “We take a personalized approach to selecting and placing windows and doors, so every project is a reflection of the home as a whole and the intentions of the client and design-build teams.”

Among the tenets of outdoor living design, erasing the barrier between interior and exterior ranks high. Successfully establishing that flow is the marker of an alfresco space that is so much more than a backyard. Enter, Albertini. The only European window and door company able to produce custom products in wood, wood cladding, bronze, aluminum and steel, it also boasts a variety of profile sizes, from traditional to sleek and minimal. Such a selection is integral to a company that prides itself on finding creative solutions to structural challenges. For the pros at Albertini, nothing need stand in the way of that dreamy indoor-outdoor floor plan. “Whether the need is for a bespoke motorization system, unusual size or specialty glass, we collaborate with the homeowner to make their vision a reality,” says Marco Albertini, who runs the company alongside Hilton Perry. “No two projects are the same.”

“ Outdoor living should make you want to be outside more than you’re inside.”
THE MATERIAL MINDSET Asked to elaborate on the most challenging aspects of creating open-air living spaces, Suarez points to material selection. “The right materials need to be selected, and a lot goes into that,” he says. “They need to excite the client, complement the home and blend together cohesively without being too matchy-matchy. They also have to meet intense durability demands.” Especially in coastal areas, decorative features and structures must be able to withstand sunlight and saltwater. Suarez notes that ipe wood is a solution. It has a softer, more aesthetic finish, but is so durable that it is even used on boats.
1
A PRO’S DO AND DON’T + D o focus on the view to create flow. “In a lot of today’s home designs, the eye is drawn to the vista beyond the back walls, and when that is used as a focal point for the indoor-outdoor transition, it helps to create a seamless continuity,” Suarez says. + D on’t underestimate the importance of irrigation and drainage. It’s not the most glamorous part of designing an alfresco haven, but it’s essential to the health of softscapes and especially key if one wants to stick with sustainable plant palettes.

For some, the most important feature of the outdoor environment may be a cozy place to gather around a fire; for others, it’s having room to host 100-plus guests. There are many facets of outdoor living design, and the homeowner’s wants and needs can vary greatly from project to project. That’s why, at Altera Landscape, it’s all about the client. “We believe that it doesn’t matter how well our projects turn out if they didn’t enjoy the experience and don’t feel satisfied by the results,” company president Ryan Suarez says. “We ask them to explain in detail how they will really use the space, daily and for entertaining, and we listen intently to the answers.” But what does every homeowner seek, regardless of their unique needs? According to Suarez, elemental inspiration. “Water and fire features add beauty and practicality to our designs,” he says. “They make spaces more enjoyable and habitable, and so it is little surprise that our clients are often intent on implementing these from the beginning.”

“ Everyone has great ideas, but professionals have explored thousands of concepts; they can effectively filter and focus.”
THE SECRET TO BESPOKE “I tell our team members that their job title is really ‘professional listener,’” Fox says. “We need to truly understand the client’s needs and style preferences, as well as details like where they take vacations. After gathering all of this information, we can bring the overall requirements to life with our own creative twist.”
AN OUTDOOR SPACE SHOULD BE … … A PART OF THE WHOLE Fox and team often blend flooring tones or finishes from the inside into the outdoor design. They also find that adding California rooms or other areas that are covered against the house allows the indoor-outdoor transition to feel more seamless.

… DECORATED, YET DURABLE “It’s hard to enjoy a space that feels unfinished, but maintenance must also be a concern in the open air,” Fox says. “I often recommend the use of materials that will not wear badly over time, along with water systems that minimize overspray.”

“I want something no one has seen before; something that takes my breath away every time I look at it.” For the professionals at California Landscape Studios, living up to such desires is all in a day’s work. Through the unique approach of beginning with three-dimensional renderings, owner Justin Fox and his team bring together visual appeal, functional purpose and inspirational concepts. They push boundaries and build interactions between every feature in a space, and it all culminates in designs that achieve the overarching goal behind CLS’ work. “We aim to create private oases,” Fox says. “We translate the feelings and emotions a luxury resort evokes: tranquility, peace and comfort.” The outcome, his clients can attest, is paradise. Asked what he sees as his greatest success, Fox says, “When I was 9 years old, I was buying plants from Home Depot with my birthday money, a vision of our garden in my head. It is surreal to me that I’m now able to design with a team of creative people every day.”

What makes for an ideal outdoor furnishing? According to Wes Stewart, a balance of the style, scale and comfort found indoors with the durability needed for exterior use. At Sunset West, this is an art perfected. The company, founded by Stewart, began as a manufacturer and purveyor of pieces for interior applications, but soon transitioned to more alfresco aspirations. Today, it offers furnishings and accessories that meet the expectations of their finest indoor counterparts. “Our products are fashionable and customizable, but also perform ideally in exterior conditions,” Stewart says. This is crucial, he goes on to say, to the creation of indoor-outdoor flow. While on the subject, he has another piece of advice: “I could go on indefinitely about the benefits of consulting an expert when looking for furniture. A qualified professional will ensure that you purchase the right product for your needs and avoid any missteps regarding inferior materials or the demands of a specific environment.”

“TECHNOLOGY SHOULD SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE, NOT COMPLICATE IT.”
Continuity of technology is a critical component of home renovations. At Modern Home Systems, a San Diego-based company specializing in home automation, designated home theaters and outdoor entertainment centers, the objective of each residential project is to find a solution that fits the homeowner’s lifestyle while incorporating as much of their existing technology as possible. “People come to us to create seamlessness among their technology,” says Otto Benson, president of Modern Home Systems. Intelligent Illumination In constant development, lighting design from a technological perspective is particularly noteworthy. “Lighting control has become a huge part of our industry,” Benson shares. “We have the capability to create scenes with your lighting, whether that be to fit your schedule or for the lights to naturally dim and brighten depending on the actual sunlight coming through the home.”

EASTWARD BOUND A COUPLE REIMAGINES THE ROMANCE OF BALI FOR THEIR CONTEMPORARY HOME IN LAGUNA BEACH. WRITTEN BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARYN MILLET

T
here’s something magical about Bali—the natural majesty of mountains meeting ocean, of a rich past that lives on in temples constructed long ago. The Indonesian island served as Steven and Maura Short’s honeymoon destination nearly two decades ago, and the couple has returned there since. So, after deciding to build a new home in Laguna Beach, it naturally followed that they would dream of infusing a Balinese spirit into their coastal dwelling. Though they favored a contemporary architectural approach, “we wanted our home to be organic and livable, a place where it would be okay to have sand on your feet,” Maura reports. To translate this natural Indonesian warmth into a modern space, they turned to residential designer Geoff Sumich and interior designer Lisa McDennon. For Sumich, the process began by imagining ways to weave the dreamy coastal daylight throughout the home while still maintaining privacy. To capture the brilliant oceanic luminance from the property’s elevated position, “we rotated the house on a diagonal,” explains the residential designer. “This created a front-on view of the ocean, but also the space for a beautiful raised deck.” Sumich collaborated with general contractor Mark Stodder to engineer the 50-foot sliding doors connecting this outdoor space to the home, as well as the massive, cantilevered shade structure (a copper-clad steel frame), which was designed “more like the wing of an airplane,” says Stodder. “A significant amount of the tension is in the upper skin, and a significant amount of compression is in the lower skin.” Inside, more sunshine filters through glass that punctuates walls of warm Texas limestone, chosen to “approximate the look and feel of Indonesian coral stone,” notes Sumich. Since he designed the foundation on a system of nine steel posts, “walls were released from having to hold

up the house, so I was able to bring the light above and below the stone,” he says. The residential designer also placed more glass panes under the sloped roofline “to let in this beautiful, soft northern light that bathes the house.” To mitigate glare and heat gain and provide privacy, a hightech louver system offers “a more veiled light,” he explains. “The louvers are an incredible instrument to fine-tune the quality of light in the house.” Not just the sun-filled soul of the house speaks to Indonesia—the home also became a showcase for pieces by local artisans there. The homeowners discovered carved figural sculptures and placed one in the family room and another in the garden. “They each have a different emotional feeling,” says Steven. The couple also commissioned work, including the ornate carvings in the entry. “It was so fun to be a part of creating our pieces of art,” recalls Maura. Of them, Sumich observes, “They produce this beautiful texture, warmth and soul within this contemporary house.” When composing the interiors, McDennon focused on straddling these traditional art forms with the home’s contemporary architecture. For the furnishings, the interior designer turned to midcentury modern pieces to bridge the gap between the diverging styles. “I like the clean lines and how the beautiful wood elements complement all those artworks,” she says. “The more midcentury design allowed the wood elements to easily be incorporated.” The choice also allowed for a pleasing tension—balancing hard and soft and uniform and organic. To smooth the transitions indoors and out, the interior designer also employed a central palette “intended to be warm and harmonious, with a very organic influence,” she notes. “It’s about not interrupting what you’re experiencing when you walk in, the volume of the space, and the beautiful panoramic view of the ocean.” These tone-on-tone gestures provide seamless movement, “but at the same time, each room has its own personality,” adds McDennon. For example, earthy, volcanic grays help ground the kitchen, like the raked granite island countertop. In the bedroom, gentler grays and whites, she says, “bring a softer, more romantic mood that plays off the beautiful stone walls.” Meanwhile, radiant yellow velvet armchairs inject energy among the cool grays of the living room, drawing the eye to the artwork. “We weren’t afraid to bring in color,” says McDennon. “It was just about making sure that we played with color in a calculated way.” Though the family may be thousands of miles away from the island that inspired them, the Balinese communion with nature now defines daily life in their new home—from spending lazy afternoons on the patio sharing moments in the sun, to greeting the new year with a plunge into the ocean. “It was an adventure and a dream come true for us,” says Maura, “building a house around the way we wanted to live.”

“We went back and forth about whether to install a chandelier in the dining area,” McDennon explains. “I was okay with not having one there.” After her clients saw a fixture from her Lisa McDennon Collection for Hinkley, though, they decided it was the perfect fit. In the family room, a floating walnut entertainment unit “becomes one with the architecture, says McDennon, who notes that the design team took great pains in choosing just the right grain pattern for the piece. She opted for furnishings that are simple and unfussy, such as the commodious custom sectional in a Pindler fabric and the Loloi carpet.

oe Skoby’s life is a manifestation of his passions— family, art and surfing. The La Jolla ceramicist is fortunate enough to be able to create his wonderfully sculptural objects at a studio nestled in his home’s lush garden. “Being a surfer is a driving force as far as how I set up my day, although now it comes second to the patterns of my two daughters,” says Skoby. “My schedule depends on the weather, the waves and the tide. I often try to get a surf in before picking up my daughter from preschool.” Even if Skoby’s process is the embodiment of California chill (“My best moments are when I can just sit down and let it kind of flow,” he says), his ceramic wares are breathtakingly cohesive, unified by surface carvings and a penchant for dipping, brushing or even pouring on his glazes to beguiling effect. “Sometimes with layering, things react in the kiln and will kind of crawl and do odd stuff,” he says. “For me, that’s an aesthetically pleasing outcome.” Formally, Skoby’s vessels could be described as perfectly imperfect—artful disruptions that challenge the viewer’s expectations. “I really felt satisfied with the work when I started to kind of stumble into these misshaped pieces,” he says. “I’m still enjoying that, the idea of breaking away from perfection.” And while the artist, who was introduced to the craft in high school, admits to being enamored with the work of iconic ceramicist Peter Voulkos, who is known for his free-form construction, truthfully, his influences are harder to pinpoint—and his oeuvre all the more intriguing for that.
LX_LA60_SM_Skoby_4.indd 239
That doesn’t stop observers from drawing a connection to the artist’s own environs. “It’s more subconscious,” counters the native Californian, whose roots run deep in the state. “I think there’s a fluidity to my work; the wheel spins just as the ocean moves.” He loves taking nature walks with his family, reflecting on the reefs, rock formations and subtle colors and is drawn to the look of low tides. Yet he doesn’t aim to recreate those elements, but strives to discover his own path. “If people can point to a curve or the overall essence of a piece and know it’s my work, that is a huge compliment,” he says. As he always does, Skoby is enjoying playing with new shapes and textures, and he’s in the early stages of planning a show with artist Thomas Campbell, whose mediumspanning work also has ties to California’s skate and surf cultures. “He’s someone I really look up to, and it was a serendipitous encounter that brought us together.” Wherever his muse may lead him next, Skoby is committed for the long haul. “It’s just something I’m going to do until I’m 85 years old and my hands don’t work anymore,” he says. “It fills in an important part of my soul.”
Ceramicist Joe Skoby works at his wheel in his La Jolla home’s backyard (opposite). Embracing uncertainty, his creations have an organic feel (above). Skoby’s collection of surfboards hints at another passion (above, left).

ears before she and her partners Michele Trout and Jill Hall completed the dramatic transformation of this Los Angeles home, designer Heidi Bonesteel would attend gatherings there. “We are friends with the owners—our kids went to school together,” shares Bonesteel. Little did she expect that the team would eventually have a chance to put their own stamp on the residence. In fact, it looked like the couple would be decamping to Santa Barbara for the foreseeable future. “They had no intention of returning, but they missed the energy of Los Angeles, so they decided to come back to this home, which they had never sold,” Bonesteel says. But things had changed for the family, and they wanted a dwelling that reflected their new aesthetic and lifestyle. “The homeowners bought the house in the 1990s and raised their family here,” says Trout. “With their children away at school, they wanted to shift from a cozy home for a young family to something more sophisticated and geared toward entertaining.” To that end, the project became all about the flow and embracing a light atmosphere. “Early on, the clients told us that no one was using the living room when they entertained,” says Trout. “By rethinking the rooms and creating a better flow, we were able to give them a more accessible and usable space—and a living room that’s lived in.” They worked with general contractor Mitchell Dean Collins to open up the compartmentalized areas—the living room, family room, dining room and kitchen—and to put a bar between the family room and dining room. “We removed all of the casements and made the doors higher and wider, too” explains Trout. “Not only does it improve the flow, it also allows the spaces to share the light.”
“THE BEAUTIFUL OAK FLOOR WE SELECTED WAS THE JUMPING-OFF POINT FOR THE INTERIOR.” –HEIDI BONESTEEL
LX_SOCAL60_HOM_Bonesteel_12.indd 242
The contrast between the original interiors and the remodeled rooms could be characterized as the difference between night and day. “Before, the inside of the house felt dark and heavy,” says Bonesteel. “It was lovely, but it had a lot of hefty wood beams and moldings that had become dated. The owners wanted something fresh and modern, an almost Scandinavian look.” While pale colors and light woods rule on the inside, another transformation was occurring on the outside of the house, where the designers selected a charcoal gray color for a contemporary note of gravitas. The darker hue replaced a palette of chocolate brown and white and is complemented by a black metal roof and windows. “The amount of ‘oomph’ the paint provides is mind blowing,” notes Bonesteel. That color inspired gardens by landscape designer Peter Eberhard that are tightly knit to the interior and include an outdoor living room, a fire pit lounge area and bubbling fountains. “The exterior color drove the muted plant palette of subtle greens and grays with touches of blue,” he says of the mix comprising hydrangeas, salvias and Westringias, among others. “The house opens itself to the outside, and the landscape uses a vocabulary similar to the interior.” Inside, those dark woods and finishes are replaced by white walls, complex textures and light woods. “The beautiful oak floor we selected was the jumping-off point for the interior,” says Bonesteel. “We carried it throughout, and then used the same oak for the exterior doors and gates.” Perhaps the space that best encapsulates the home’s new dynamic is the dining room. “This was a very formal room,” says Trout. “It had a long table that was surrounded by chairs covered with cowhide. The clients wanted something that would work for a crowd but would also feel comfortable for just the two of them.” The answer was to reinvent the room with a pair of custom-designed tables that span the width of the room and, though they can be pushed together for a lot of guests, they are usually separated to make two cozy dining spots. A tailored banquette along the wall defines the space. In front of the dining area, a quartet of armchairs surrounds a circular ottoman, making a natural spot to relax pre- or post-dinner with a drink from the adjacent bar. “This is a fun couple—and cocktail hour is not to be missed,” says Bonesteel. Shortly after the designers finished the home, they were invited to a party and got to see their handiwork in action. “About 80 people hung out outside until late, and then we went inside and mingled in the living and dining spaces until early morning,” says Trout. For the team, this was the affirmation that they had successfully ushered the home into the family’s next phase. “There is so much love and family history here,” says Bonesteel. “Now, the owners are ready to make more good memories in the years to come.”

P
rior to their marriage, Beverly and Ken Vidalin each had a desert getaway—Beverly’s in Indian Wells and Ken’s in Rancho Mirage. A few months before tying the knot, they decided to sell Beverly’s and keep Ken’s. However, they wanted the house they would now share to be a current reflection of their new life together as a couple. Beverly, who has a background in design herself, knew too she needed a professional to help realize that vision and turned to interior designer Sheldon Harte. Recounting how the project began, Harte says playfully, “I waved my magic wand and opened up my bag of tricks!” But that’s not far from the truth. The 1980s home, which sits smack on a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, was a gut renovation. “We rebuilt the house,” Harte shares. “It was originally a model home, so it has the most spectacular view, but a previous owner had remodeled it in a very dark, Frank Lloyd Wright style.” The team, including architect Thomas Jakway and general contractor Damian Trevor, reworked the layout, adding a den and enlarging the entry, ultimately opening the home to its mountain views. Outside, landscape designer Marcello Villano thoroughly revamped the gardens. To give the pool a more clean-lined, contemporary appearance, the faux-stone around it was removed. This move, in turn, prompted a rethinking of all the hardscape. “It’s the domino effect,” muses Villano. Since the Vidalins only live there part of the year, they requested drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plantings and also wished for spots where their collection of sculptures could be displayed. The seamlessness, though, could not have been achieved without some exceptional teamwork. “We were able to start collaborating early, and that’s the best way

LX_SOCAL60_HOM_Harte_10.indd 254
to create something like this,” adds Trevor, recalling the complexities of custom elements like the hand-chiseled limestone floors from Israel and oversize polished-nickel details that required sourcing from specialist fabricators. The furnishings became a thoughtful combination of Beverly’s existing collection along with finds intended just for the home. “She had some antiques and some classic art but wanted to update the mix with contemporary pieces, so it felt current,” Harte says. (One favorite is the foyer’s 17th-century Flemish tapestry that she first saw in a Beverly Hills rug gallery as a little girl. When she returned as an adult and found it still there, she had to have it.) “My home when I was single was more formal—you knew a woman lived there,” explains Beverly. “So, it was important that my husband have more masculine elements in this home, like the warmth of wood and color.” To that end, Harte employed the couple’s favorite hues (Ken likes yellow, and Beverly likes teal) through patterned textiles and wallpapers. One particularly peppy moment is a pair of petite Elbow chairs in the living room by legendary Hollywood decorator William Haines. “They’re great little chairs that play with scale—they’re not too heavy,” says Harte. “They’re symbolic of Haines’ work in the desert.” But where the couple’s personalities really come into play is in the kitchen. Ken had spotted a photo in a magazine of a kitchen that kindled their interest. “Our vision was to have that room be the focus,” Beverly reports. “Then Sheldon created our beautiful open and much brighter, larger space with the sparkling polished-nickel cabinets and the wood butcher blocks—the wood was for Ken—and the leathered quartzite countertops and marble backsplash.” With a breakfast table and handy cocktail cabinets, guests can comfortably join them in the kitchen while they cook. (Ken enjoys doing the mains while Beverly prepares the sides and always handles the desserts.) “We do a lot of entertaining in both our homes,” says Ken, but he’s particularly proud of his outdoor options here, among them a pizza oven, an Argentine grill and a smoker. On nights they aren’t hosting, the couple settles into their cozy den. And, while it is a vacation home rather than a main house, Harte is pleased that it reflects each of his clients. “We created an environment for two people who fell in love and married later in life,” the interior designer says. “Both have pride in what they have, so we were judicious in putting it together so that both would feel comfortable there. We ended up with a successful background against which they can live their life together.” And that mood is what delights Beverly. “Sheldon was able to create an elegant, casual look,” she shares. “Our family loves it. It’s a happy house.”

SANDRA VILA Sandra Vila Design House 949.290.6722 sandraviladesignhouse sandravila.com A deep appreciation for design and the art of living has always driven Sandra Vila. After spending time in corporate marketing, real estate and fashion—all of which she enjoyed and excelled in—Vila decided to embark on a new journey: interior design. She soon discovered that it was the ultimate passion she’d been working to find, and Sandra Vila Design House was born. Guided by the belief that a space should be totally custom and unique to its inhabitants, rather than a carbon copy of popular images and motifs, Vila bases her process on the pursuit of furnishings and accessories that “tell a story.” “Too often I see pieces used to simply fill a space rather than serve a purpose or represent the client in some way, as would a family heirloom or trip mementos,” she shares. “For the items a client doesn’t already have, travel is the best shopping. You can stumble upon special pieces you won’t find anywhere else. London and Paris are my favorite places for this.” Vila and her team also design custom case goods and upholstery for many of their clients.
“ I’ve always found that trusting my first instinct is the way to go.”
Describe your dream creative project. My family is from Cuba and I love the introverted layout of the Colonial houses there, which are built around an interior courtyard. An incredible interaction exists between generations of family members within the common areas below and private ones above. It would be a dream to design a home like that. Who do you aspire to be like? Architect Robert A.M. Stern and interior designer Kelly Wearstler. While vastly different in style, both artists have achieved impressive residential and commercial recognition. Stern’s classical designs, which are rich in historical influence, and Wearstler’s juxtaposition of style that stimulates the senses … they are true masters of their craft. How does your local design culture influence your work? I live in Southern California, so a coastal feel can often be a driving force in my overall aesthetics. What’s on your desk? Photos of my children, a 1930s-style Crosley Kettle Classic desk phone and a rock crystal quartz coaster, for my morning coffee but also to promote clarity, insight and high energy. Which faraway destination most inspires you? I’ve always wanted to visit Vienna. It’s overflowing with artistic history, with greats the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Gustav Klimt having spent significant time there. The architecture, too, intrigues me. From imperial palace to museum, it ranges from classicist to modern. If you weren’t in this profession, you’d be a … Professional ballroom dancer.

THE LITTLE RED DOG GALA – DESIGNER DIGS FOR DOGS Designer Digs for Dogs was a night of pure excitement and energy, as the local design community and guests spent their evening raising awareness and funds for the millions of dogs that die in shelters every year, simply because they are homeless. By partnering with Luxe Interiors + Design, local designers were able to create amazing, one-of-a-kind dog beds and doghouses, which were auctioned off live at The Little Red Dog Gala. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, efforts and products to make this event a success. Visit thelittlereddog.com for more information on the charity’s amazing work.
