LORI GENTILE INTERIOR DESIGN Lori Gentile’s Design Firm has been creating beautiful spaces in San Diego since 1990. She considers her boutique firm “stylists” for your home. As exemplified in one of her latest projects, she transformed her client’s backyard into their own ultimate outdoor Shangri-La. Gentile’s inspiration came from a recent trip to the Far East, wherein she incorporates the Cambodian zen-like quietness of a retreat with all the amenities of a gorgeous resort. “Our clients wanted outdoor living areas not only to entertain, but also to truly be able to relax, unwind and enjoy a nice, warm swim in their own private oasis. The design goal was to create space for multiple outdoor experiences. To that end, we selected building materials and textiles that seamlessly tied everything together. By using a clean, simple color palette of ebony, pearl and charcoal with small bursts of citrus, mainly in solids, we achieved a relaxed, streamline look. Our clients are enamored”.

Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

A family’s wish for an indooroutdoor lifestyle leads to a modernist structure in Pacific Palisades that engages its site while framing ocean vistas.

Drawing on nautical influences, an oceanfront La Jolla house maximizes its small corner lot from top to bottom in dramatic customized style.

Timeworn materials, lush greenery and elegant shapes lend a European sensibility with coastal charm to a home in Newport Beach.

A designer remakes his Los Angeles abode with custom furniture pieces and distinctive surfaces to reflect and inspire his own aesthetic.

BEAUTY MARK

D

oes beauty matter? I recently listened as a designerfriend reflected on the perception by many that decorative pursuits can feel like a frivolous concern. Certainly practical matters of daily life—the commute

to the office, the contract awaiting signature, the phone call you need to return—can eclipse our quotidian attentiveness to art and beauty. With designer Jamie Drake at the Flexform showroom in New York.

I would encourage, however, that each of us make time to thoughtfully observe and pursue beauty, art and design in earnest, and tend to it often. Beauty, as expressed through architecture and design, has a profound impact on our consciousness. Structures and façades, space planning, landscaping, interiors, furniture, lighting, and art offer up a daily dose of inspiration, inciting emotions and reactions: delight and

Far from being flippant, beauty is an expression of creativity that grounds us.

awe, uneasiness and disquiet, serenity, wonderment, and reflection. Beauty lurks everywhere: in the minutiae of a peony petal and in the grand force of Frank Gehry’s DZ Bank in Berlin, which I stood in awe of earlier this year. Far from being flippant, beauty is an expression of creativity that grounds us. We should care deeply about the placement of a chair, the color of a wall, the pattern repeat of a textile. Pay attention, readers. Beauty matters.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

summer. Welcome to the summer edition of Luxe Interiors + Design. This past spring, we hosted two back-to-back events in San Diego. First, we teamed with Lavish-The Bath Gallery for the grand opening of its La Jolla showroom, where San Diego’s top designers, architects and builders turned out to see the company’s distinctive European and American products. Next up, we partnered with the architectural surfaces showroom and distributor Tuo Sogno Dream Surfaces Showroom. As the La Jolla space is known for carrying some of the design industry’s finest brands and materials, we were thrilled to help them showcase their beautiful new collections with an exclusive preview party. I’m also excited to announce that designer Kathleen Buoymaster and Seaside Home have joined forces in the development of a new concept with their bespoke interior design division, which will be located on the second floor of Seaside Home’s La Jolla locale. Enjoy the new issue, and I look forward to seeing you at upcoming events, as well as in the shops and showrooms of our San Diego design community.

When interior designer Penelope Bianchi aspired to revamp the exterior layout of her Montecito compound, she enlisted landscape designer Margie Grace to achieve her vision. What manifested from the collaboration was a striking façade enveloped in a lush blanket of Boston ivy. “My intention was to conjure a timeless, romantic aesthetic,” says Grace, who applied large foundation shrubs as well as flowering varieties to allow for the plantings to blend into the site’s existing foliage. “Whenever I encounter a site with such innate beauty, I always strive to maintain its natural allure.” gracedesignassociates.com

COASTAL CHIC Dynamic shapes and strong lines unite to present Foreside Home and Garden’s latest selection of outdoor furniture and accents. Originally established in the early 1990s by husband-and-wife team Claire and Mark Woodsum, the brand continues to evoke a charming coastal aesthetic by virtue of a mixed palette of materials and textures. Featured here, the recently introduced Market display table imbues a classic industrial style that functions as a unique addition to any outdoor setting. foresidehomeandgarden.com

Upon staging the landscape design of this Beverly Hills home, William Hefner drew from his client’s penchant for art collecting to envision a complementary layout for the property. In doing so, Hefner says he “arranged a scheme where succulents and cacti become art objects against a fairly tight palette of background plants.” This distinctive plan enabled the Los Angeles-based architect to dissolve the boundaries between the home’s interior—which he extended through the featured shade structure—and exterior spaces, bringing use to the edge of the slope and maximizing the captivating panoramas of the descending hills. williamhefner.com

NATURAL INCLINATION A contemporary approach, a roster of warm materials and an enduring connection to its natural environs provided the foundation for the landscape design of this Montecito abode. To create the scenic display, which is nestled within the Santa Barbara Mountains, landscape architect Tavi Perttula says he chose to “seamlessly blend the sight lines of the premise’s natural foliage into the property.” To execute this goal, he embraced a diverse palette of greenery—such as olive trees, agave and coast live oak—and embraced the industrial-style architectural elements of the home by integrating concrete and sandblasted cedar for the hardscape. “My decisions enabled a layout that functions as a bridge between the structure’s modern design elements and the native mountains,” Perttula adds. rchstudios.com

Since its 2001 launch, Hive—co-founded by Philippinesbased product visionary Kenneth Cobonpue—has been offering a choice selection of outdoor furnishings and décor from an exclusive register of artists. Of particular note is the Kai lantern, shown, a delicately shaped fixture inspired by the simplicity of a bamboo roll-up screen. Composed of a multilayered shade oriented in an abstract pattern, Kai manifests an alluring glow that is heightened when flanked by additional fixtures. designbyhive.com

Landscape designer Richard Leyva, of Laguna Beach’s Leyva & Wilde Landscape Architecture, reflects on the importance of innovative design and regionally significant materials.

What is your design mantra? With every project, I aim to maintain a design purity and sophistication that authentically echoes the style expressed in the architecture.

IMPRESSION

The featured backyard’s picturesque locale—a rustic stretch of Mandeville Canyon in Brentwood—fueled landscape designer Patricia Benner’s inspiration for the design of its tony garden. Choosing to outline the property’s pool area with native plants such as wild lilac and catmint, which blend smoothly among the property’s existing California live oaks, Benner crafted a layout that is unelaborate yet conjures a unique sense of place. “By working within the site’s innately beautiful framework and adding a nominal array of indigenous plantings,” Benner says, “I was able to create an aesthetic that feels organic while providing visual impact.” benner-design.com

Describe your preferred landscape style. Southern California is a region where many different styles are revealed, from cuttingedge contemporary to classically formal and everything in between; therefore, I’m not drawn to one particular look. Are you working with any new materials lately? Recently, I’ve been exploring the concept of vertical landscapes, as the technology for maintaining the plant material has significantly improved. European designers such as Patrick Blanc have designed some spectacular spaces, and I think the opportunity to create such designs is tremendous. What is your favorite material to work with? Where stylistically appropriate, I’ve enjoyed employing plants such as jade, agave and aloe, providing an opportunity to integrate region-specific plants within a compelling design system.

For landscape architect Scott Shrader, designing a property’s exterior layout begins not outside, but inside the home. “My initial priority is to survey the residence’s interior style; this includes elements such as the floors, walls, colors and textures,” says Shrader, who adds that this crucial review paves the way for a flawless transition to the outdoors. The featured compound’s exterior spaces evoke that unwavering connection Shrader invariably strives for. Mirroring an interior layout distinguished by muted hues and a “simplistic elegance,” the exterior design presents a corresponding palette of natural tones and a clean selection of plantings and hardscape materials. “What manifested was a feeling of relatedness and comfort, which happens to perfectly describe my ever-enduring intent.” shraderdesign.com

Commissioned to update the exterior of a ranch-style home in the hills of El Cajon, San Diego landscape designer Debora Carl elected to infuse the property with a modern éclat. “My primary focus was incorporating climate-appropriate plantings that thrive in San Diego’s arid environment,” notes Carl, who chose to accent her resilient selection of flora—which include sweeping groundcovers, succulents and Australian willow—with a soft hardscape of natural limestone. “These vibrant gardens anchor the property, infusing the site with striking pops of color and textural appeal.“ deboracarl.com

Garnering inspiration from nature, Fisher and Weisman outfitted the featured lounge chair with organically shaped legs accented by hollyhock leaves. “The collection speaks to the garden setting it was designed to enhance,” notes Fisher, who adds that the generous scale and sumptuous cushioning were necessary in order to ensure an elevated level of comfort. michaeltaylordesigns.com

VERTICAL THINKING Debbie Kotalic visits Worth Avenue often. But, she’s not in Palm Beach to admire the fashion-centric vitrines. There’s a much more visually stimulating display that inspires passersby to stop, shoot a pic on their iPhone, and ponder the site of an 840-square-foot vertical garden. “It’s a very tight abstract that both counters and complements the avenue’s sprawling bougainvillea and breezy palm trees,” Kotalic says. “Everyone sees something different. It’s similar to when people look at the same cloud. What they envision isn’t necessarily the same.” A landscape designer for green wall specialists GSky Plant Systems, Kotalic is intimately familiar with every aspect of this wall. After all, she devised it, and even included a hidden optical illusion within its leafy façade. “I’ll give you a hint...it’s very Palm Beach,” teases Kotalic, who collaborated with the Garden Club of Palm Beach and landscape architecture firm Sanchez & Maddux. Behind its allure lies an intricate network of irrigation and maintenance systems that ensures the installation retains its wonder. As for the Rorschach-inspired camouflage, further gaze reveals (at least to us) a wind-bent palm tree, swaying fronds and all.

MAGNATE O F TA S T E THE VISIONARY PRESIDENT OF RALPH PUCCI INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSES THE INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF ART, THE BEAUTY FOUND IN IMPERFECTIONS AND THE NEXT BIG THING. WHEN I JOINED THE family mannequin business in 1976, all the other companies were doing very ladylike and elegant mannequins. So we sprayed ours out in high-gloss colors. We went where someone else wasn’t, and that became the design philosophy of Pucci from there on out. I LOOK FOR PIECES

that are unique, simple, timeless and, most importantly, that have soul. I don’t look for furniture that’s been mass-produced; I look for special pieces that have been touched by a great artisan and a creative mind. FINISHES ARE REALLY

For our Hervé Van der Straeten show in New York, we chose Billie Holiday and Count Basie. For Ruben Toledo in Los Angeles, we had a little fun and played early Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Music is the exclamation point to the mood we’re trying to create. I’VE BEEN WORKING with Vicente

Fashion and interiors turn toward Beijing as this capital city dazzles with striking design. Shifting gears from traditional expectations—beloved chinoiserie, blue-andwhite porcelain and graceful lattice detailing—Beijing is setting a new tone where sleek lines reign supreme and regal undertones hark back to the Ming Dynasty. With thought-provoking architecture and Chinese culture as a muse, reimagined forms take shape, never compromising function for beauty, rather combining them seamlessly. Illustrating this notion is the Grace Beijing, a contemporary hotel in the much soughtafter 798 Art District, surrounded by world-class contemporary art galleries.

UNFORESEEN ELEMENT COMPANY Therien & Co. | RETAIL $4,035 | INFO therien.com

“I adore this chair. The curvaceous shape and simple upholstery is a winning combination. The twig-like, gilt-iron legs infuse it with an extra dose of panache. This is the kind of piece that would work just about anywhere, especially as an accent.” BRADLEY AGATHER | DALLAS, TX | THERIEN.COM

+ Upon designing the latest set of additions to Therien & Co.’s Studio Workshops collection—which includes this elegant yet slightly unexpected chair—Robert Garcia intended to evoke a relaxed contemporary vibe that challenges the wonted appearance of upholstery. When paired with the rich textural element of gilt-iron legs, the undulating lines of the seat, back and arms conjure a distinct visual lightness. PORTRAIT: MOLLY MILLER.

Its dramatic detailing and rich composition of hues presents a standout pattern that offers an abundant range of use, from upholstery and accent pillows to drapery.

“Dedar completely understands the synthesis of old and new, the relationship between fashion and interiors, and the rendering of classic tradition into modern luxury. “Initially, I thought of my work as a kind of branding warfare,” says artist James Verbicky of the three-dimensional works he creates using vintage media and advertisements in his San Clemente studio and shows through the JoAnne Artman Gallery in Laguna Beach and Madison Gallery in La Jolla. “It still is, but it’s also an exploration. I take things out of context, chop them up, remove parts and give them a new meaning.” Verbicky, who

While exhibiting in Paris, Verbicky began collecting ephemera from vendors along the Seine, which sparked his mixed-media evolution. “I now make paintings without paint,” admits the artist, who scours obscure and foreign magazines from the 1900s to the ’60s for materials. “I mess with past information designed to influence us,” he says. “My goal is to create something that’s both mind-blowing and different.” jamesverbicky.com; 949.412.1018

“Travel inspires me,” says Los Angeles designer Peter Dunham. “Going to a new place kicks my roving eye into gear.” As Dunham is known for his deft mix of color, pattern and worldly textiles within interiors that blend “English furniture plans, California comfort and French restraint,” it’s easy to see the impact of his wanderlust. But his singular sensibility can also be traced to his

high school days in England. “My best friend was the son of David Hicks,” says Dunham. “David was my introduction to the world of design, and he became a mentor, friend and inspiration.” Today, Dunham’s collective influences come through whether he’s designing a home for his celebrity clients or curating the coveted items in his popular shop, Hollywood at Home. Within the shop’s two locations, he features hand-printed fabrics from his line, Peter Dunham Textiles, furniture pieces he creates based on vintage designs and one-of-a-kind finds—ranging from a 1970s Le Corbusier chaise to vintage Moroccan floor cushions—that he picks up on his globe-trotting journeys. “I’m a shopaholic,” he admits. “That’s why I opened a store!” hollywoodathome.com; 310.273.6200

Today, working from a studio in San Diego’s Point Loma Design Center, he continues to straddle the line between functional objects and works of art with the 125 designs he offers through his company, Seventh & 7th Designs. Salvage—simple, useful, old design that I can make live again. I believe that furniture should get better with time. DREAM COLLABORATION:

I am living it right now. The finisher I work with, Ben Eismann, is on fire with ideas that are so outside the box, it’s inspiring. We’re doing a lot with walnut, bleaching and torching it, and then adding stains to highlight the beauty of each piece of wood. GREATEST INFLUENCES:

My mom’s homemade pesto. FAVORITE CITY:

Brooklyn. My roots are there. The name of my company, Seventh & 7th Designs, refers to the cross streets of my grandfather’s and father’s grocery store. The building has been in the family for over 125 years. EAMES OR MACKINTOSH?

oteworthy hotels and resorts typically bust through design convention, yielding interior and architectural declarations that push the boundaries beyond residential projects. Both

creatively looser and more experimental in nature, these hotel designs’ bold assertions are definitely something to write home about, especially when an A-list decorator is at the helm. At the Viceroy Anguilla, Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler employed unexpected contrasts of natural, neutral-hued elegance where rugged driftwood intermingles with finely honed stone; and white, black and gold interplay with the blue Caribbean waters. The resort’s Sunset Lounge, overlooking the bay, is brimming with a myriad of design nuggets. A mesmerizing Italian marble backsplash primed for sleek open shelving stands tall and bold behind a Carrara-topped island with warm wood chevron detailing. “Be fearless,” advises Wearstler. “Incorporate a bold use of texture in your home, in your kitchen, and mix different metals and materials.” As a stylish departure to the natural backdrop, sumptuous gold (a staple of the designer’s) and shagreen-upholstered barstools offer a fashionable perch to survey the culinary action. “The raw material has so much spirit and natural beauty,” notes Wearstler. “It’s Mother Nature in her finest form. It’s architectural art.”

A take on the all-white kitchen, Thompson warmed up the potentially stark palette by working with blonde woods and almond-hued cabinetry and accents.

from a holiday to exotic Bali. With enticing beaches, sprawling cliffs, emerald rice fields, and active volcanic peaks, this ecological wonder may possess alluring topography, but it’s the

spirited approach to design that’s captured our attention. Encouraged by the lush equatorial gardens on the grounds of luxury resort Karma Jimbaran, Grounds Kent Architects embraced the untamed environment when creating this serene soaking retreat. Cast out of a unique blend of terrazzo, marble and

sandstone, the organically shaped bath echoes the design sensibility consistent throughout the property. “The villas are built to follow the design of a traditional courtyard found in a Bali village,” explains Martin Grounds, lead architect on the project. A wide stone path dotted with river rocks connects to the freestanding, open-air tub, overhung with palms and frangipanis, while the imposing stonewall anchors the retreat giving way to the natural plant inhabitants. The awardwinning Australian firm found inspiration amidst the lush tropical landscape and peacefully nestled this stunning display of classic Balinese architecture. “There is something truly luxurious about an outdoor bath in the sweet Bali air.”

Architect Russell Shubin marked the entry of a Pacific Palisades house with a board-form concrete wall. Opposite top: Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors connect the living area with an outdoor terrace. R

eal luxury is restraint,” says architect Russell Shubin of his approach to redesigning the Pacific Palisades residence of Karina and Blake Mirkin and their two young children. “It’s qualitative. It’s not about more is better.” What the

Mirkin’s existing house—a 1960s structure that had been remodeled in the 1980s—lacked with its relatively small footprint, it made up for with its unique siting. “The house is on a promontory,” Shubin says. “So every place on the site has a completely different view. We let the forms of the house fall out of framing those particular vistas and experiences.” Shubin took the structure down to its studs and then reshaped the exterior with flat roofs and clean modernist lines. As the house is built into the hillside, he placed the public areas on the top floor, the master bedroom and two children’s rooms one level down, and an office below that. To capture the expansive views, Shubin held back from the expected walls of floor-to-ceiling glass in favor of carefully crafted vistas for impact. “There’s more drama in strategically placed openings and views,” explains the architect. “It’s the juxtaposition of solid and void.”

“I CHOSE A PALETTE THAT WAS COMPLEMENTARY OF THE BEACH.”

Designer Summer Jensen wrapped a wood console from Phillips Collection around a custom bench covered with fabric from Armani/Casa Exclusive Textiles by Rubelli. She designed the open kitchen with warm Hawaiian koa wood cabinetry and an island made with white quartzite.

C O N T I N U E D F R O M P A G E 167

The architect also made the most of the limited footprint by eliminating transitional areas to blur the line between indoors and out. “The design problem I faced was how to create more visual, usable space,” explains Shubin, who dissolved the boundary between the living area and a large outdoor terrace with a corner of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. “We designed from the inside out and from the outside in. We captured that space from the exterior.” That method aligned perfectly with the Mirkin’s lifestyle. “We wanted to take advantage of this lot in a significant way,” Blake Mirkin says. “And what we built dovetails with the way we live with our two sons: lots of indoor and outdoor entertainment.” Designer Summer Jensen underscored this seamless blend. “Because the views are so amazing and they’re a family that lives outdoors, I wanted the interiors to step back a little bit,” Jensen says. “I chose a palette that was complementary of the beach, like the driftwood and sand, and then let the views provide the dynamic colors.” She chose a durable white oak for the floor and then cerused and white-washed it, and designed custom kitchen cabinetry from Hawaiian koa wood.

A wall paneled with koa lends a rich counterpoint to the dining room’s corner window, which offers uninterrupted coastline views. The custom table and benches, upholstered with hair-on-hide from Saddlemans of Santa Fe, are from Plantation, and the pendant is by John Pomp Studios from A. Rudin.

C O N T I N U E D F R O M P A G E 169

To play off the white walls, she incorporated panels of koa to frame the television in the living area and offset a corner window in the dining area. “I wanted there to be some areas that were highlighted,” says Jensen, who also designed upholstered furniture pieces meant to be

comfortable and flexible. “Since the floor plan is quite small, we really wanted it to feel like one unified space that also extends to the outdoors,” says Jensen of the outdoor terrace she appointed with seating and dining areas. “I used the same palette as the interior so the outdoor room felt like part of the entire house and added to their overall living space.” Even though very little square footage was added to the existing floor plan, the slope and shape of the lot presented serious geological challenges. The house’s foundation had settled five inches and builder Curtis Quillin had to reinforce it by installing a total of 20 friction piles 30 feet deep. “It was grueling work because digging for the piles was done by hand,” Quillin says. “It took over 16 weeks to perform.”

Jensen chose a sofa and chairs from Janus et Cie to face a built-in fire pit on the expansive terrace, which landscape architect Dirk J. Gaudet accented with channels of river rocks. A long custom dining table and bar-height chairs are by James de Wulf.

Ironically, the largest and flattest part of the property is used as a lawn. “The grass offers a feeling of expansiveness you don’t normally get in this area,” says landscape architect Dirk J. Gaudet, who designed the property’s hardscaping with basic forms that complement the architecture’s scale and shape. “It also gives an open-edge view of the ocean and city lights.” To punctuate the grounds, landscape designer Selena Souders, who selected the plantings, installed eight round steel dishes on three sides of the house. The disc-like vessels, reaching up to twelve feet high and six feet wide, “add scale and sculptural focal points to the property,” Souders says. During the two years of construction, the owners were faced with making countless decisions. “When you’re building a house, you always have crossroads,” Blake says. “Essentially, at every one of the crossroads we chose quality over budget because we thought the architecture and location merited it. We felt we had to do it right.” L

H

e kept using the word extreme,” says designer Fred Gemmell of his client Andrew Canter, who owns and operates a private investment firm. But being extreme—creatively, materially and technically—is exactly what was required

in order to create his modern La Jolla house, which sits on an oceanfront property measuring a compact 25 feet wide by 100 feet long. Canter understood the limitations, but he also saw the potential. “I told the design team that I would be putting them to the test!” says Canter. “The concept was to create something rare and extraordinary in every aspect of the design.” Canter began working on plans with architect Stösh Podeswik, who was involved with the initial design of the structure’s main shell before shifting his focus to construction drawings and handling the complex city and coastal permits. When Canter brought in Gemmell, the structure began to take on its distinctive look. “I spent a lot of time designing and building boats when I first came to San Diego,” says Gemmell, who collaborated on the project with his colleague, architect Lauren Williams. “Since the lot was small and on the water, the house just wanted to feel like a land ship.” As they began designing, the duo demonstrated a creative and economical use of space. “We literally used every inch,” says Williams. “We started with a rectangular lot with setbacks and began sculpting the building’s form to soften it and keep it from becoming a big box.” The resulting curvature along the southern façade is subtle, and, together with cantilevered decks sheathed in titanium that project dramatically toward the water, lends a nautical feel. Those decks, says builder Ryan Hill, “required a tremendous amount of structural analysis.” But the most daunting challenge for him came when Canter and Gemmell decided to put a swimming pool on the roof. “It forced the structural engineer to completely rethink the way the house would be built,” says Hill. “It went from wood-framed construction to a hybrid of steel and cast-in-place concrete.” The team also created a subterranean garage accessed by a hydraulic ramp, which raises and lowers cars, and they installed a laser-guided turntable inside the door for ease of entering and exiting. For the levels in between, the living spaces flow together on the main floor, while the master and a guest bedroom are upstairs. As the living area and master bedroom open completely to the elements with pocketing lift-andslide doors, a cohesive indoor-outdoor palette was essential. As was finding a durable one. “We had to test every material because waves constantly

crash on the sand and throw salt onto the house,” says Gemmell. Outside, Venetian plaster, glass and chiseled limestone define the structure’s form. Inside, ceilings are lined with bleached etimoe and floors are tiled with white limestone. The kitchen cabinetry, island and master suite feature 3,000 square feet of graphically figured Hawaiian koa veneer harvested from a naturally felled tree in Hilo. “It’s an extremely beautiful and rare wood,” says Gemmell. “And it fit Andrew’s desire for something out of the box.” Gemmell and Williams handled the interior design as well, which acts as a perfect extension of the building. Given the unique curvature of the house, almost all of the furniture—from the living area’s coffee table to the built-in master bedroom’s bed—had to be custom made. “We wanted to create a fine, furniture-grade sculptural interior that was expressive without being too decorative,” says Gemmell. 182 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

As the structure maximizes the boundaries of its lot, there wasn’t much space left for greenery. But landscape designer and contractor Justin Williams, Lauren’s husband, managed to make an impact nonetheless. “It’s a tough site,” he says. “Everything had to be wind-, salt- and full-sun-resistant.” To add colorful elements to the property, he filled rectangular stone boxes with sturdy sculptural plantings of aeonium, echeveria and aloe Hercules and then softened it all with a row of stipa grass. “Andrew was open to any idea we threw at him,” says Williams. “It made the process really fun for all of us involved.” Which goes to show what can be possible when a client is adventurous to, well, the extreme. ometimes a house defies labels, as seems to be the case with the Newport Beach residence of Julie and Darrick Walker. “It has an elegant coastal style with European overtones,” says landscape designer Molly Wood, who collaborated on the

project with architect Cynthia Childs and designers Erin Curci and Erin Flinn. “The house looks like it’s always been there, yet it has modern elements,” says Childs, while Flinn notes that it feels “casual yet elegant, beautiful but realistic.” Builder Neil Longman would describe the residence as having “a beachy feel mixed with rustic elements.” While the house might have its contradictions, they all fit seamlessly together. The structure, which sits comfortably on a tight 45-by-93-foot lot, was designed to maximize outdoor living. On one side of the front entry, which is flanked by two olive trees, Wood created a seating area by installing a built-in banquette and a fire pit, and the designers added three KingsleyBate resin wicker chairs. On the opposite side, Wood centered a birdbath on picturesque bluestone step stones. “It’s decadent to use that much Orange County real estate just for beauty, but it was worth it,” she says. Additional usable outdoor space comes from a southern-facing courtyard, the centerpiece of the house, which is appointed as an alfresco dining room. Wood enclosed the small but pivotal space with reclaimed iron panels and then coaxed vines to grow along an iron

trellis, offering shade but still allowing the sun to peak through. She also put in lush Mayten trees and angel’s trumpets along the walls. Childs used a mix of materials—wood, stone and brick—to mark the exterior, and took a similar approach inside to add depth. Childs chose rough-hewn materials like reclaimed wide-plank French oak flooring and bricks with a hand-washed look to give the structure a “European flair.” Antique beams, sewn together with painted tongue-and-groove planks, line the cathedral ceiling of the master bedroom and form a grid pattern on the living room and kitchen ceilings. The beams “give old-world strength to a fresh look,” says Childs, who finished the stair railing with a reclaimed feel and acid-washed oak shelves to nest into built-ins in the master bedroom. 190 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

“We used pieces with simple lines because the house already has a lot of texture,” Curci says of the approach she and Flinn took with the interiors. “But at the same time, we kept things interesting by custom-designing pieces and searching for special items.” The duo, who worked within a muted color palette, highlighted the living room’s built-in shelves with a soft sea green. They then appointed the space with comfortable yet tailored furnishings that they designed in a “coastal French” style and covered with soft linen blends. Although Flinn and Curci custom designed most of the house’s furnishings, they also reworked some pieces to fit within the same European aesthetic. In the master bedroom, they reimagined bedside tables by adding a new layer of paint and a marble slab on top.

In addition to the elegant sensibility, the house’s location and clients’ lifestyle also played a role in the design. “We wanted the home to feel inviting and remind them that they’re living near the beach,” says Flinn. In the dining room, the designers refinished the owners’ cherry-stained dining table to match the lighter wood tones in the house and then paired it with greige-stained white oak dining chairs. The chairs’ gentle but pronounced curves echo the furnishings used throughout. Although the scale of the house makes it feel comfortable and spacious, Childs still maximized the space by designing details like a coffee bar and hidden memo desk in the kitchen and shelves tucked into archways in the wall. “We got a lot out of this little lot,” says Childs. “It may not be easily pinned down to a single style, but it has a lot of personality.” L

y home is my sanctuary,” says designer Nick Berman of his house nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. “It’s the gestation place for many of my designs.” He first purchased the 1970s flat-roofed nondescript

structure for its panoramic views and retreat-like setting and then set about transforming the once-ordinary residence into a one-of-a-kind home. “Working on the house compelled me to examine my passions as a designer,” says Berman, who started his career as an interior and architectural designer and now focuses his energies on his distinctive furniture company, Berman Rosetti. “It made me refine my point-ofview and extrapolate that into my furniture. It purified my vision.” The pieces in his furniture line, which he designs and owns with his business partner Gennaro Rosetti, are made with organic materials and marked by strong architectural lines, contrasting textures and an intrinsic warmth. Similar values—summed up by Berman as “rustic minimalism with a soul”—apply to his redesigned home.

“The old house had no sense of entry, so I created one,” says Berman of the entrance that now opens to an inner courtyard, which he landscaped with queen palms and mondo grass. “The home’s opaque from the street, yet I put little square cutouts in the gate and adjoining fence for intrigue.” Equally important are the exterior’s bold forms and special finishes. For the textured terra-cotta stucco that sheaths the exterior, Berman’s longtime collaborator and builder Ernesto Alonzo notes, “While the concrete was still wet, we embedded it with rock salt and then hosed it off and finished it.” The dramatic changes continued inside, where Berman remodeled the structure’s principal rooms—kitchen, living, dining—into one powerful living area. “You also encounter a whole wall of windows that face the views,” he says. “The effect is a counterpoint to what you’ve seen from the street or courtyard. It’s a different world.” Berman chose random northern Idaho quartzite for the floors and smooth drywall for the walls. A dated tile fireplace was given its own sleek canted wall and finished in steel-troweled concrete. Berman’s in-depth knowledge of wood, accumulated over years spent designing furniture, is brought to light with his innovative approach to the kitchen cabinetry. He chose cerused flat-cut oak for the built-ins, but for the island’s base, he opted for rift-cut oak to lend formality.

“MY HOME IS THE GESTATION PLACE FOR MANY OF MY DESIGNS.”

Berman added a large picture window to the dining area and designed custom rift-cut cerused oak cabinets, which were fabricated through Berman Rosetti, to the space. The Foal dining chairs and Ocampo dining table are also from his line.

“I cantilevered the 12-foot-long stainless-steel counter above the barstools for casual dining,” adds Berman, who placed his Ocampo dining table under a nearby window and encircled it with maple Foal chairs covered with Mongolian lambskin. “I love the textural counterpoint of the lambskin juxtaposed with the simplicity of the furniture,” Berman says. When Berman decided to enlarge the master suite, he also chose to add a series of decks that would reach out into the trees and make the most of the views. “We had to set up scaffolding on the mountainside to insert structural beams for cantilevering the master suite and the outside decks,” Alonzo says. “It was like surgery!”

For the newly expanded master bedroom, Berman designed a 25-footwide wenge bookcase to sit across from his Arroyo bed. “Conceptually,” notes Berman, “it defines the length of the space and guides your eye toward the prize—the view.” In the master bathroom, two vanities flank a shower pan of glass tiles, which steps up to a Japanese soaking tub. Berman wanted the shower’s glass walls to be flush with the ceiling, to keep the space open visually. “We had to install the shower tracks before the drywall was done,” says builder Matt Rogers, who worked with Berman on the master suite. “And the mosaic work was very labor intensive.” Berman’s quest for craftsmanship pervaded every part of the redesign, including the master’s closet, where he installed Japanese-style chests instead of conventional built-ins. The idea ended up inspiring the Tansu modular storage system now sold through his company. “The relationship became symbiotic as pieces I designed for my house would evolve into some aspect of the collection and vice versa,” says Berman, who found that being his own client proved to be a creatively inspiring endeavor. “I got to see how my ideas worked contextually, instead of in isolation. I became the user as well as creator. Now when people visit my home, they can feel its harmony and cohesiveness.” L
