W
hile recently browsing an antique shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina, I picked up an issue of Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March 1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs and retro appeal, I took it home to study its content. What insightful words of design wisdom I discovered in its pages. A few to take note of, and for us design devotees to keep in mind...
On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be made with imagination as well as knowledge. There must seem leisure in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in looking lived in, by dreams at least.” On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them. Therefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.” On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more permanently and more beautifully, they will be regarded less as real estate and more as homes, and with that change in attitude, the status of the home as the nucleus of society will approach more closely the older American tradition.”

Created from a series of interconnected geometric shapes with metallic-finished cores, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler’s Welles light fixture is a welcome addition to the brothers’ exclusive line of furnishings. Since launching their namesake collection, Gabriel Scott, last year, the architects-turned-designers’ chic set has rapidly expanded—with plans to introduce a similar piece in the form of a sconce—and there are no signs of slowing down. “Our intention was to offer a flexible lighting system that gives decorators a maximum amount of possibilities,” notes Richler. gabriel-scott.com

Camerich co-owners Michael Lin and Stephen Bianchi have expanded upon their Southern California following with the introduction of the company’s new U.S. flagship, a sprawling outpost situated in the West Hollywood Design District. Orchestrated in a series of arresting vignettes, the tony locale highlights Camerich’s latest selections, which include a set of smart geometric occasional pieces juxtaposed with more streamlined cabinetry. For Michael Carter and Douglas Truesdale, a jaunt to Los Angeles in late 2011 incited, as Carter describes, “an enchantment with the city.” It was then that the formerly New England-based designers saw an opportunity to bring their effortless and classic East Coast vernacular to the market. In addition to offering design expertise, Carter and Truesdale’s West Hollywood boutique displays their bespoke series of upholstery and case goods. Luxe sits down with designer Erinn Valencich, the creative vision behind Erinn V. Maison, to discuss her current inspirations.
What inspired you to begin a career in design? I have always loved homes and dreamed of building them from the time I was a child. I fell into interiors when my friend secured me a job interview because she liked how I decorated my apartment; I started my own firm shortly thereafter. Are there any specific colors, patterns or textures that resonate most with you? Anything blue! I love all tones from light and soft blues to deeper turquoise and navy shades. In regard to patterns and textures, I’m drawn to large-scale geometric motifs and grass-cloth wallcoverings. What influences you on a daily basis? I’m definitely inspired by photography, whether I’m gazing at a picture of a faraway land or flipping through the gorgeous advertisements in a fashion magazine. Who are some of your design icons? Dorothy Draper’s innovative nature is still inspiring; her books are a great read any day! I am also enamored with Steven Gambrel’s work because his aesthetic is so incredibly unique; I can always discern his rooms.

The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. Part of the new line is the Chinchero bench, shown, enveloped in Jordan’s olive-hued Prima Alpaca fabric—a luxurious fiber that was historically implemented by Incan royalty and evokes the ancient heritage of the Andean culture. For Kris Lajeskie, a “tribal-inspired feel with a touch of Mediterranean detailing” articulates the Santa Fe-based interior designer’s innovative style. Lajeskie’s adoration for finely crafted and organic materials fueled her desire to design residential spaces five years ago, and has since garnered a wide following. Recently, she opened her first retail locale in Encinitas, which has already been met with great enthusiasm. “I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting combinations.” The designer chose Anna Weatherley’s goldrimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both, and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. o many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity. Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets
of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the exhibition was inspired by The City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar to us today. that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.

None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”
It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.
ARCHITECTURAL WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A PAINSTAKING RESTORATION?
I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today. FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…

me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.
PERIOD: Mid-tolate 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment. This season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant for Art Deco architecture. The result is this hourglass stool, which marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used in multiples,” says Bunting. “The juxtaposition of the warm and tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”

+ To create the Sorenthia light fixture, Rhode Island-based designer Asher Dunn turned to the marvels of the ocean to find his muse. “I was intrigued by the crystalline nature of sea kelp when seen below the surface of water,” says Dunn, who took a cue from the arresting quality of light shining through the plant. In the early 1950s, celebrated Italian architect and furniture visionary Gio Ponti experimented with several models of this exquisite case good. “I find historical documents from all over the world,” says Venice-based artist Ashley Collins, who integrates those pages into her large-scale abstract paintings. Opposite: An interior by Napa Valley designer Erin Martin, whose risktaking approach is admired by Collins.

“It’s a Cinderella story,” says artist and designer Ron Dier, who was working as a carpet salesman when he began contemplating a more fulfilling career. Shortly thereafter, Dier stumbled upon a pottery class at a neighborhood studio that changed the course of his life. “Clay was the greatest thing that I’d

ever touched,” he explains. “I would look at the wheel and wonder where the form was coming from, almost like I was channeling it.” Within 18 months, Dier had turned his passion into his profession. “I was sort of swept away by the whole thing,” explains the Santa Ana-based Dier. First known for his jewel-like ceramic vessels, finished with 22-karat gold and platinum, Dier has since expanded into furnishings and lighting. Sold through showrooms including A. Rudin and Blake House, Dier’s striking pieces put minerals at center stage. In his hands, ice-like strips of selenite morph into table bases and light fixtures glow with slices of polished Brazilian agate. “It’s fun to work with Mother Nature and see if you can complement her and make something useful,” says Dier. rondierdesign.com; 714.543.1266

There is a rhythm to working on the wheel, and you can get lost in it. Maybe it’s a primitive reaction to having your hands in the soil. DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS.
So much of it is intuitive. I’m not a technical person, and I don’t draw particularly well, but I can visualize three-dimensionally very quickly. In high school, geometry was easy, and algebra was a nightmare. CURRENT PROJECT:
I just completed three selenite sculptures for the Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg. The nice thing about selenite is that when you polish it, it looks almost like an ice sculpture. DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS:

etting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively, the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting
aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery, for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains. Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light while retaining a sense of genuineness. “This kitchen adds an instant feeling of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”

DISPLAY TYPE Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “The idea of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan earthenware in the mix. The key is to make sure that whatever is visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction, everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

hen a designer approaches a master bathroom suite with two specific inspirations in mind—the Ritz Paris (pre-renovation) and Carrie Bradshaw’s closet from the original
Sex and the City movie—the result is destined to be laden with glitz and theatricality. Such is the case for this opulent space that Estee Stanley dreamt up for a Beverly Hills client. “I wanted to make

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley says. The resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally, the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,” Stanley says. “This typically calls for a seating area.” The designer brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions, while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek custom cabinetry. “This is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,” Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A “sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “The chic gray-and-saffron combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,” he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovationsupholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings. “I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “They feel less expectant than chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufacturer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement. “The plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

“There is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,” exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s heralded his longstanding love affair with the material throughout his design career. His studious composition began with an unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much to be desired. or designer Joelle C. Nesen, coming from Portland, Oregon, to work on a house in Rancho Santa Fe for a couple looking to spend more time in a warmer clime came with a particular appeal. “It was exciting to think of doing something different
from the norm to such a classic California structure,” Nesen says of the residence, which blends Early California and Mexican Colonial styles. “But we still wanted to stay true to the house.” The project also came with a particular challenge. The wife, who searched the area on the recommendation of a friend, had fallen in love with the house. Her husband, on the other hand, still needed convincing. “My style is clean and classic, but my husband has much more modern tastes,” says the wife. Unfazed, Nesen proposed combining the two sensibilities. “Since the wife already loved the house,” Nesen explains, “we wanted to create a much cleaner, lighter design for the husband.”

In 1999, builder Jeff Holcombe—part of the Holcombe family associated with building area homes in this popular vernacular since the 1970s—designed and constructed the house with and for his parents, Bob and Donna Holcombe. “We built several homes like this one in Rancho Santa Fe, and it’s the only style we focused on,” says Holcombe. Appropriately, he was enlisted to work with Nesen on the interior changes to the house. “It’s flattering to be contacted by new owners to do remodels or additions,” he says. “We’re very fortunate to stay in the loop.” In addition to keeping within the parameters of the Rancho Santa Fe Protective Covenant, which sets standards for everything from window placement to trim styles, Nesen, working with lead designer Allie McGory, was also sensitive to the home’s classic architecture when it came to making changes. “It was crucial to maintain the integrity of what Jeff had designed,” she says.

Openings were enlarged and iron railings were added to the veranda, where custom lanterns by Gearhart Ironwerks of Gearhart, Oregon, hang above sitting and dining areas. Vintage McGuire chairs surround a table from Dos Gallos, and the sofas are from Restoration Hardware.
A variety of potted plants from Tony + Michael in Portland add a lush green element to a long enclosed courtyard, which opens to the main hall and the master bedroom. The arched door leads out to the driveway.
Although key materials, such as hickory and terra-cotta tile flooring, and architectural features, such as arched doorways and structural Douglas fir beams, remained untouched, an emphasis was placed on opening up specific spaces. In the kitchen, Nesen repainted existing cabinetry with a whipped cream white (the same color she used throughout the house) and enlarged an opening connecting it with the adjacent dining room. “We wanted to make it fresh, clean and unified,” says Nesen, who also had stucco half-walls replaced with iron railings on the veranda. Against the freshly painted backdrop, which allowed the dark wood detailing to pop, the designer merged classic furnishings with contemporary pieces for a more modern aesthetic. “Every room is a blend of old California and clean-lined luxury,” says Nesen, who

paired custom sofas with zigzag-patterned pillows in the living room and used “heavy textures like the rug to balance the scale of the house.” In the dining room, she contrasted a sculptural Emanuel Morez resin-and-bronze chandelier with an imposing wood table that the previous owner had custom-made for the room. An exception to the overall light-hued theme is the master bedroom, where chocolate-colored walls are softened with cream-toned furnishings and heavily embroidered draperies. “That element really connected the classic to the contemporary,” says Nesen. “It’s traditional embroidery but with a young, Bohemian pattern.”
Stretches of fresh white cabinetry and hickory plank flooring give the kitchen a clean graphic base for modern pieces, such as the owners’ Warren Platner table and Norman Cherner chairs. The custom light fixture is by Gearhart Ironwerks.

In the verdant yard, landscape designer Josh Soto put in a diverse mix of plantings along with fruit trees and 100-year-old olive trees. He bordered a serene swimming pool with flagstone pavers and Irish moss.
A luxurious bed by A. Rudin stands against the chocolate-hued walls of the master bedroom. The custom bench from Mad Furniture is upholstered with suede by Edelman Leather, and embroidered drapery fabric by Donghia lends a rich layer to the space. The bedside cabinets are by Ironies.
Schumacher’s Queen of Spain wallpaper defines a powder room, where a custom console fabricated by Gearhart Ironwerks is topped with a custom slab from Alpha StoneWorks in Portland. The sconces are from The Urban Electric Co., and a custom mirror is from Lara Sydney Framing Gallery, also in Portland.
Taking advantage of the region’s mild climate, the house’s large veranda functions as a year-round outdoor living-dining room. The alfresco space overlooks a meticulously landscaped yard, where layers of lavender, creeping fig, magnolia, succulents and other greenery surround an inviting swimming pool. “There’s an eclectic mix of plants that work in beautiful harmony together,” notes landscape designer Josh Soto. “There’s always something blooming.” With its new contemporary slant, the classic house turned out to be a perfect fit for the owners. “We started with an amazing property,” says the wife, “but everyone involved contributed to improving the vision. It turned out so much better than we ever imagined.” L

C
ertain rules govern any good novel: It must be peppered with interesting characters; descriptive imagery should evoke a strong sense of place; and the plot should unfold with plenty of twists and turns, building suspense as the
story moves toward its dramatic resolution. One couple and their design team seemed to keep that narrative approach in mind throughout the creation of a gracious Italian-style residence on the Malibu coast. The protagonists were an entrepreneur, his wife and their teenage child. And setting the plot in motion: a series of trials even Homer’s Odysseus might have found daunting. First, the voluminous size of the new structure would require designer Philip Nimmo to embark upon a quest for not one, but many, holy grails. He and the wife began shopping before even breaking ground. “The things the clients collected were very eclectic,” says Nimmo, “but they serendipitously went together.” It took more than a year—and countless antiques galleries, flea markets, showrooms and art adviser Patsy Wolf Buckly—to expand that delicately calibrated aesthetic.
When it came to the structure itself, the couple had clear ideas of the direction it should take. They met with architect Paul Williger—who has spent two decades working alongside Appleton & Associates founder Marc Appleton on projects recognized for their sensitive contextual style—and asked for a home reminiscent of a Tuscan farmhouse with old-world charm. Also, says Williger, “they wanted to be able to walk through the front door and see the Queen’s Necklace.” Wanting to add a few surprising layers to the story before embracing its climactic scene—that legendary coastline view stretching from Santa Monica to Point Dume—Williger oriented the structure to frame the Pacific, but sited it so that as the owners approach the ocean-side façade, they are redirected through two one-story garage pavilions, a motor court and then a lush entry garden. “Your attention is taken

away from the ocean,” explains Williger, who designed the residence and served as the firm’s principal-in-charge, “so that when you enter the house and experience the primary rooms, the view is rediscovered.” In addition to the careful siting, working with materials and proportions that felt authentic was crucial. “A lot of people build Mediterranean-style houses that don’t look right because they get the proportions and finishes wrong,” explains the husband. Williger scaled the structure so that “it’s convincing, without being overwhelming,” says the architect, who also “built patina into the house” by using recycled terra-cotta roof tiles, antique pavers and about 140 reclaimed barn timbers. Comically, the mason laying the pavers began discarding any with imprints of chicken feet and other fowl. “We said, ‘What are you doing? Those are the best ones!’ ” recalls Williger, who gave them pride of place at the kitchen threshold.

A pea gravel courtyard just off the dining room is appointed with an imposing stone table and garden finials. Stone columns capped with a wrought-iron arbor support are sheathed in greenery and delineate the entry progression.

Another test for our storytellers—in this case builder Tyler Udall and his superintendent Andy Ggem—was the husband’s request that the pool deck be level with the main floor. That meant constructing midway down the slope of the property. “It was a challenging site,” says Ggem, “but between excavating for the basement and the pool area and then building up retaining walls, we didn’t have to import or export any soil.” Now the infinity-edge pool looks out to the horizon, and east-facing rooms enjoy stunning views of the canyons as well as garden areas that slope away from the house. “We did not want to terrace the slopes,” explains landscape architect Dana White. “Instead, we moved with the grades using pathways that open up into different areas of the garden.” Inside, Nimmo arranged the furniture with an eye for breathing space and synchronicity with the vistas. “That view is so immense and pristine,” he says. “It would be odd to feel cluttered inside and have that expanse outside.” Keeping furniture profiles generally low also preserved the sense of longitudinal spread in the main rooms, particularly the living room, where the architect designed broad rather than tall groin vaults. “They enhance the relationship to the horizon,” says Williger. “And they don’t feel out of scale or like there might be cobwebs way up on the ceiling.”

“The architecture, in its purity, allowed for creative license with the interior design,” says Nimmo. “Thus we could create this wonderful and whimsical mix.” Working within a neutral palette, Nimmo complemented the many antique pieces with modern accents such as starburst-shaped pendants from Jean de Merry in the family room and sculptural side tables from his own eponymous line in the master bedroom. As in any good story, challenges are conquered, friendships forged and the protagonists stay with you long after the last page. “It’s not contrived at all,” Nimmo says of the home. “The personalities of the owners truly come out.” L

hen Paul Jennings and Adrienne Grant were looking for a house in Brentwood, they knew just what they wanted. “An indoor-outdoor lifestyle was our priority,” says Grant, who notes
they also hoped for traditional architectural details and cozy textures within a sensibility that conveyed “the cheerfulness and playfulness of West Coast living.” The house they found was ideally situated to meet those goals, with its west-facing backyard and expansive views, but the structure itself was not ideal. The couple decided to have it razed, and they called on architect Ken Ungar and designer Meg Joannides to start from scratch in creating the warm, welcoming house they envisioned. “They grew up on the East Coast and were fascinated with the idea of indoor-outdoor living,” Joannides says of her clients. “They craved that openness and light.” To create a structure that would begin to embrace those values, Ungar devised a layout in which the main rooms—the kitchen, breakfast area and family room—open to the rear yard. “We wanted to make the house feel like it was connected to the outdoors,” explains the architect. Within that flowing plan, Ungar designed rooms that would meet the family’s needs in terms of aesthetics and function. “I really wanted to emphasize proportion—all four walls and ceiling—to get the right feel,”

says Jennings, a real estate developer. Ungar skillfully kept spaces feeling intimate by avoiding abnormally high ceilings that might make the rooms seem baronial, yet sized them to be spacious enough to accommodate the family’s many gatherings. “We wanted our house to be both a peaceful refuge and a welcoming, cheerful place to entertain,” Grant says. “We wanted every space to be inviting.” To make sure of that, Joannides used a palette of light neutrals punctuated with textures and pattern to play up the home’s sense of openness. “It was critical that we didn’t hinder that feeling with dark furnishings and fabrics,” explains Joannides, who designed the living and dining rooms—on either side of the foyer—to “coexist harmoniously.” A custom chinoiserie coffee table standing between linen-covered sofas in the living room speaks to the hand-painted wallcovering in the dining room. “That wall is quite important, as it’s seen from the foyer,” says Joannides. “It needed to make a statement.”
In the entry, high-gloss white wainscoting contrasts with a textured Thibaut grass-cloth wallcovering, which warms the voluminous space and lends character. A gilded mirror from Formations hangs above a custom console table from Dennis & Leen.

A loggia overlooking the lush backyard is comfortably appointed with furnishings from Janus et Cie. Landscape designer Andrea Scharff adorned the brick columns with climbing Zephirine Drouhin roses, and a swimming pool by Chris Doman Pools sits opposite an expansive lawn.

In those spaces and throughout, the designer selected furnishings with strong profiles but kept the embellishments to a minimum. “The shapes might be traditional, but we didn’t goop up the forms with a lot of trimmings and welting,” Joannides says. “Everything has a fresh and clean but still luxurious feel to it.” Even the kitchen, which features the same marble on the countertops and backsplash, keeps things understated. “We didn’t want it to be overly ornate,” explains the designer, who worked with Cooper-Pacific Kitchens to create cabinets that would stretch up to the ceiling, drawing the eye to the ceiling’s tongue-and-groove detail. In addition to the kitchen’s tongue-and-groove ceiling, the home, which was constructed by builder Roy Abbott, also features coffered ceilings, wainscoting, crown moldings and other elegant millwork. The architecture’s traditional sensibility belies the state-of-the-art technology that lies underneath. “We incorporated a Savant audiovideo system,” says Abbott. “It’s an advanced automated system, and it runs the whole house—the lighting, the pool and the spa.”
Dressed with a bright coral-pink fabric, Saarinen chairs pull up to a marble-topped Saarinen table, both by Knoll and purchased from Jules Seltzer Associates, to provide a spot for projects. The artwork is from Hollyhock.
The property’s landscape, which was originally designed and installed by landscape contractor Ronald M. Hamamoto, adds an enveloping last layer. Recently, the couple brought in landscape designer Andrea Scharff to enhance the grounds with more than 600 new plants. “We tried to provide some sculptural aspects to the beds and give them more fullness,” says Scharff. “We also added an extra dimension of aroma with scented flowers like Zephirine Drouhin roses as well as Eden roses.” Just as the couple had hoped, the house offers tailored yet comfortable interiors and an easy connection with the outdoors. “It makes a cohesive statement,” says Joannides. “There is a great flow between spaces, and all of the rooms are inviting. None of them give the impression that you aren’t welcome to come in, relax and enjoy.” L
The light-filled master bath was designed to be an elegant spa-like sanctuary. Gary Hutton Furniture custom mirrors, featuring brushed stainless steel and Swarovski crystals, hang above his-and-her vanities on opposite walls. The large Zuma tub is fitted with Waterworks fixtures, and the light fixture is by Jehs + Laub.
The guest bedroom, sporting a palette perched halfway between masculine and feminine, features a canopy bed by Ironies and custom white-lacquer bedside tables from The Mews House. The views are framed by ripple-fold draperies made with a Home Couture textile from Quadrille.

ary Finley compares his role as an interior designer to a set designer in that “I set the stage for living well. I like to create rooms that allow the personalities of the owners to color the spaces.” However, in the case of a
recently completed residence in Laguna Beach, he also had to account for the dramatic presence of the Pacific. “The ocean provided the main focus,” says Finley, who has offices in Laguna Beach and Vail Valley, Colorado. “So I aimed to create a very relaxed and restful environment.” Reaching that goal began with transforming the existing clapboard beach house into something more worthy of its impressive setting on the coastal bluffs. Even though his clients had never lived in a contemporary house, Finley suggested architect Mark Singer, who is known for a modern California style that emphasizes natural materials like wood and stone. “They realized that a building with large areas of glass looking out to the ocean would lend itself to a contemporary style,” Finley says.

In the open living area, a Hudson Furniture table backs up against a John Boone sofa. Finley grounded the space with a wool-and-silk rug, from Vera Za’arour Design, in a custom pattern that mirrors the rolling surf in the distance.
Arriving at that ocean view proved crucial to Singer’s approach. “Previously, the entry door was abruptly located on the courtyard,” he says. “A procession needed to be carefully designed to carry the observer to the place where the ocean is revealed.” To that end, Singer created two successive limestone colonnades. One stretches along a separate garage structure and ends in a lush private courtyard, where a second one continues to the main house to reach its crescendo, the view. When it came to the main house, walls were repositioned, a second floor was added to accommodate a master suite, and Singer sheathed the new rectilinear forms with a warm-toned plaster. Inside, the breathtaking panorama is fully exposed in the newly created great room, where the architect took down walls separating the kitchen, living and dining areas and enlarged a skylight above. “Each of the spaces share views of the sea, sky and beach from different vantage points,” explains Singer. To emphasize the sleek lines throughout, builder Chris Gallo installed shadow lines, a labor-intensive recessed detail found wherever walls meet the ceiling or floors. Gallo says creating such clean-lined interiors is deceptively complex. “Everything has to be perfectly straight,” he says, “which makes the work so challenging and fulfilling.” Sensitive to the owners’ penchant for the traditional, Finley chose rift-cut white oak flooring instead of concrete, and in the guest bedrooms, linen drapery over the more modern look of vinyl blinds. “We merged a contemporary building with more traditional materials,” Finley explains. “I wanted the natural fibers and textures to add softness to the home without disturbing the lines of the structure.”
A limestone-wrapped island by Eggersmann USA provides a subtle delineation between the kitchen and the dining area. Mahogany Sutherland chairs surround a Hudson Furniture table with a walnut slab atop a custom base. The custom handblown glass-and-stainless-steel pendants offer a subtle nod to the water outside.
Singer designed a limestone colonnade that passes through the courtyard connecting a separate garage structure with the main house. Landscape architects Richard Leyva and Rich Wilde chose a mix of plants to give the courtyard a cottage-garden feel.
For the public rooms, the designer kept things visually “quiet” by using calming tones of green with blues and neutrals. In the living area, he designed a wool-and-silk rug with a motif that mimics the ripples of the surf and chose a silk floral fabric in a “stylized graphic pattern with a nod to traditional” to cover Holly Hunt chairs. Above the dining table, Finley hung custom glass pendants that offer “a bit of the color of the ocean at sunset,” without making a bold statement. In the adjacent kitchen, Finley, inspired by a visit to the New York showroom of Eggersmann USA, decided on a stone-wrapped island. He enlisted the company to build the island, which is lined on three sides with limestone, and the frosted-mirror cabinetry. “Since we had no wall to define the room,” Finley says, “the definition was accomplished by changing materials.” Landscape architects Richard Leyva and Rich Wilde complemented the clean lines of the house by combining flowering plants, including roses and bougainvillea, with sculptural succulents, such as agave and aloe, within the interior courtyard. “The idea was to juxtapose a cottage garden against the more contemporary architecture,” says Leyva. The new experience of living in a more modern environment has been well received by the owners. “Although their other houses are traditional,” says Finley, “they’ve been pleasantly surprised with how much they’re enjoying the relaxed lifestyle afforded by this edited-down contemporary home.” L
Finley set John Boone swivel chairs near the corner of the living area so they could face the room, the limestone fireplace or the floor-to-ceiling view. Opposite the steel-and-glass John Boone coffee table, Holly Hunt chairs are upholstered with a stylized silk Harlequin fabric.

DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR Designer Kara Mann creates impeccable interiors for clients from her hometown of Chicago to the glittering city of Dubai. When asked about her favored fashion designer, she exclaims “Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. He makes rocker chic elegant,” she continues, almost inadvertently describing her own signature style. GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS The living room of designer Robert Passal’s New York apartment, with its custom moldings and eclectic accessories, perfectly exhibits his aesthetic, self-described as “classic and tailored with a definitive edge.” Passal’s décor point of view effuses his personal style, although he believes “there is a vast difference between dressing yourself and dressing a room.” With interiors, “space, scale and functionality are all major factors,” he explains. Not one to shy away from color, Passal considers a wide range of shades to be the easiest way to incorporate fashion into the home, his favorite hue being aqua. “I’m often called a peacock,” Passal laughs, “which I’ll take as a chic term of endearment.” Q+A Do you ever use fashion fabrics in your design projects? I’m crazy for men’s suiting, especially gray flannel and cashmere chalk stripes used in upholstery. Do you side more with Chanel’s “remove one item before leaving the house” or Tony Duquette’s “more is more?” I fall somewhere in the middle, but the trick is knowing when to stop. Living with items you love, be it art, accessories or daily heirlooms, makes a house a home.

Favorite fashion designer? If I could cross-pollinate Tom Ford and Paul Stuart, I would turn one of my bedrooms into a walk-in closet.

INNATE STYLE Best known for a Hollywood-glam aesthetic in a mostly neutral palette, designer and shop owner Tobi Tobin believes that style comes from within, and as is the case with any tastemaker, she claims her tastes have evolved over the years. “I’ve come a long way from wearing preppy embroidered pants in Palm Beach,” she jokes. In her own Los Angeles living room, Tobin expertly layers creams, grays and wood tones, taking cues from Donna Karan—a favorite fashion designer. Her home also works as a place to try out new ideas for her eponymous shop on Sunset Boulevard, where she sells her own furniture collection among vintage pieces and signature candles. Q+A Best style advice? Style truly comes from within, but having the courage to live with it and express it to the world takes confidence. What’s your favorite unexpected neutral? Flax linen is a beautiful neutral, but only when paired with a range of other textures. How do you see fashion trends translated for interiors? Most often through color selection. As designers, we can’t help ourselves. Fashion and interiors have always gone hand in hand.
