EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com
Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

MEET the MAKER EVA MAGILL-OLIVER
COLLABORATION
Swirls of color and abstract botanical forms define Greenville, South Carolina multidisciplinary artist Eva Magill-Oliver’s whimsical collages and mixed-media works, which have attracted collaborations with Anthropologie and Nike, among others. Born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and educated at the University of Georgia, Magill-Oliver spent several pivotal years outside Paris with her now-husband, absorbing the “overwhelming inspiration” of European art and design. “That’s when the sketchbook thing started,” laughs the artist, who often presents her notepads as art. “I couldn’t go anywhere without getting something down on paper.” Today, she is represented throughout a broad swath of the Southeast: Mitchell Hill Gallery in Charleston, The Arts Company in Nashville and Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta bring her works to designers and discerning collectors. Upon moving to Greenville in 2018, Magill-Oliver was bowled over by a nurturing community where fellow artists have become friends—such as Sunny Malarkey, with whom she occasionally shares studio space near Art & Light Gallery, a West Greenville destination featuring a mural by the two women on its exterior. Says Magill-Oliver: “We’re working on another for a major hotel downtown—stay tuned!” evamagill-oliver.com 062 / LUXESOURCE.COM

As a longtime partner at McAlpine, an esteemed architecture and design firm with offices in Montgomery, Atlanta, Nashville and New York City, Ray Booth is a designer who needs no introduction. But that hasn’t stopped the Alabama native from releasing two of them in the past year. Booth’s inaugural collaboration with Arteriors follows closely on the heels of his furniture collection for Hickory Chair last spring. Joining the ranks of Celerie Kemble, Frank Ponterio and Barry Dixon, who have lent their visions to Arteriors before, Booth recently unveiled a 44-piece line of lighting, accent furniture and decorative accessories. Blending antique influences with contemporary sculptural forms, the designs are inherently architectural—perhaps most evident in the Tuck Bench, Pantograph Pendant and Piloti Floor Lamp—while influences from the Far East, Ancient Greece and the American South are clearly evident. All feature luxury materials and artisan finishes, including an old-world bronze one Booth developed specifically for this collection. And if his body of work has taught us anything, it’s that ancient-meetsmodern equals instantly timeless. arteriorshome.com

SHOP MAYKER
As proprietor of Shop Mayker, one of Nashville’s dreamiest new home decor stores, Megan Proby didn’t foresee working in the industry. In fact, the former book editor and freelance writer started her business as an events rental company, 12th Table, in 2013. “I was getting married and I couldn’t find anything that looked like me,” recalls Proby, whose stylish props soon became so sought after that she was asked by a local realtor to stage her multimillion-dollar properties, elevating the interior furnishings to the level of the architecture. Although each home was fully shoppable, a pivot to retail proved imminent. “People kept asking, where can I find that?” Following a successful run with Shop Mayker since May, Proby is greeting 2020 with a full-blown showroom at the same Germantown address. “We’re passionate about giving people the tools to create beautiful spaces, whether it’s for a wedding or a home they’re designing,” she explains. Below, Luxe gets the scoop. shopmayker.com How does the new showroom reflect the Mayker aesthetic? We’re focusing on foundational furniture and beautiful finishing touches: chandeliers, sofas, dining tables and counter stools from the same brands we use to stage homes— lighting from Arteriors, modern upholstery by Nuevo—with potential to expand into bedroom and office soon. I also try to use
a lot of local makers and lesser-known brands, because I know people are used to seeing the same things over and over again, and we want to give them something new. How does the new space compare to your original shop downstairs? First, it’s much larger. At 1,500 square feet, the shop is about a quarter of the size of the showroom and design studio above. The shop is also focused more on walk-in traffic—gifts and smaller goods people can easily carry out with them: serving pieces, glassware, beautiful linens. And we carry a great flatware brand, Cutipol, out of Portugal. Anything else coming soon? We recently did a poll about what our customers wanted; a big thing was art. Nashville has so many talented artists, and we think it’s a great opportunity to showcase local people.
QUINTESSENTIAL KITCHENS AND SPACES: VOLUME TWO The aptly titled second tome from a celebrated kitchen, bath and closet mastermind who’s designed for La Cornue and pop superstars alike, Quintessential Kitchens and Spaces: Volume Two by Matthew Quinn arrived to much fanfare this fall. The follow-up hardback to Quinn’s 2016 debut has some serious heft: 360 pages of elegant photographs, personal interviews with his clients and a foreword by the illustrious Jamie Drake. Having begun his career in Atlanta at Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio 27 years ago—ultimately assuming its ownership along with husband Ric Parrish in 2002—Quinn now leads a team 25 persons strong, with a new outpost at the Nashville Design Collective and projects around the globe. Fifteen of these get their dues in this book, which provides a nice cross-section of the firm’s prolific projects from Washington, D.C., to Palm Beach. The best part, according to Quinn? “Fulfilled dreams.” matthew-quinn.com

SHOPS + SHOWROOMS
On the heels of its year-long pop-up locale, Design Within Reach (1517 Camden Road) recently cemented its Charlotte presence with a permanent showroom in the city’s historic South End. Augmented by a collaborative workshop area dubbed the Design Pavilion, the Connecticut-based retailer has deployed 9,000 square feet to showcase stalwarts like Eames, Saarinen and Hans Wegner, plus its exclusive collections with Nora Architects, Nathan Young, Jens Risom and more. California-based Walker Zanger (2122 Freedom Drive) also opened a sleek new showroom in Charlotte, marking its 13th in the U.S. Located in the same complex as Francois & Co. and A. Hoke, Ltd., the light-filled showplace for the company’s luxury porcelain, tile and stone emphasizes the brand’s freshest unveilings, from its Dorothy Draperinspired Botanicals and Art Deco-influenced Kaleidoscope porcelains to the 1970s-esque encaustic cement and ceramic tiles by Pietta Donovan. Already touting American outposts in New York City and Detroit, Montreal-based CIOT (2060 Defoor Hills Road NW) debuted a dazzling new 24,000-square-foot Atlanta showroom a few doors down from its Upper West Side slab gallery in October. The luxury purveyor of tile, stone, mosaics, wood flooring and plumbing fixtures—from the likes of Devon & Devon, Grohe, Aquabrass and Perrin & Rowe—sets a new bar for materials showrooms in this metropolis of more than 5 million.
WHY: She just opened a 4,000-square-foot production facility on the city’s Upper Westside in November, siphoning off a fifth for retail. IN HER WORDS: “Ceramics are tactile, and I recognized the need for customers to hold them in their hand rather than just look at a pretty photo on Instagram. Clay Shop is a way to bring the creative community I found online into real life.”

VERANDA BY COTTON & QUILL Known for their vibrant colors and bold patterns, Birmingham-based artist and designer Mary Catherine Folmar’s fabrics and wallpapers are sold as far south as Santo Domingo and as far north as Nantucket. Her extensive travels have informed an aesthetic that’s urbane and worldly, yet still undoubtedly Southern. Cotton & Quill’s latest lineup, Veranda, draws upon Folmar’s recent experiences building a country house in Andalusia, Alabama. Turtle shells, swaying cattails, faux bois and fern trellis are among the handillustrated patterns she’s rendered in rich shades like burnt olive, greenery and acacia. Still, “I can customize to any color by Pantone or Benjamin Moore,” Folmar assures. Core to the collection is a maximalist motif anchored by pineapples, an enduring symbol of Southern hospitality. cottonquill.com

SOCIETY SOCIAL
One bamboo bar cart at a time, Conover, North Carolina-based Society Social has become a phenomenon in furniture circles, bolstered by the burgeoning social media boom of 2011. Since then, the manufacturer has blossomed into a standard-bearer of grass-cloth consoles, fringed sofas and rattan table lamps with customization options once reserved only for members of the trade. In January 2019, owner Roxy Te doubled down on her retail model, ultimately opening a brick-and-mortar flagship in Charlotte’s buzzy South End in November. Here, Luxe learns what makes the store so special—and why she chose industry darling Sasha Bikoff to design it. shopsocietysocial.com You’ve said Sasha Bikoff really understands your brand and your customer. Why was she the right fit? Sasha is typically a residential designer, but I loved that she’s known for being over the top, and I wanted this store to be our brand on acid. These days, it has to be an experience or you’re not going to stand out to your customer. How would you describe the brand’s style? New traditional, but turned up a notch in terms of
color—and also homey. We worked with a lot of local craftspeople, like Kathryn Godwin, who painted the pink gingham floors, and my “drapery babe,” Jenny Lilly, who did the 10-foot window treatments with cornices. We have three huge windows and a massive door, so I thought, “Why not?” The French blue fabric is a custom color of Les Touches by Brunschwig & Fils that we launched along with the store. Who came up with millennial pink? This is our millennial blue.
What’s new for 2020? Rattan was what put my family’s company on the map when they started manufacturing in the early 1980s—I practically grew up in the factories. So, I thought we needed to make a stand for rattan. Ours is retro-coastal, but also minimal. It would feel at home in a Brooklyn brownstone. For spring, we’ll launch our outdoor line and a capsule collection with Ariel Okun. It’s going to be so good.

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

HAUTE HIEROGLYPHICS EGYPTIAN ART
Basking in floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park stands The Temple of Dendur, one of the most recognizable installations in the entire museum and the pinnacle of the Egyptian Art collection. The haunting structure—along with neighboring gallery walls of whimsical scenes painted onto papyrus, and cases of objects dedicated to deities and religious rituals—transports onlookers to an almost unbelievable time and place.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

“W
hen you acquire a valuable art piece, would you use anybody to
transport it? You suddenly consider how essential handling and transport become to ensure its security. The quality of service should become an important factor in whom you hire.” It is with this statement that general manager Victoria Battles describes Rest Assured, the leading white-glove logistics firm for interior designers, private households and luxury companies in the Phoenix area. “Rest Assured receives, stores, ships and installs all high-end luxury goods, including designer furniture, fine art and unique items,” she says. “Our clients see us as their single point of contact to inspect, catalog and condition each item, ensuring we meet their high expectations. We are a crucial element in attaining the result our clients envision.” Rest Assured maintains a high level of quality service in which trust lies at the core. “The trust we have built comes from a long history of consistent quality results,” Battles says. HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

SHOPE RENO WHARTON While the architectural firm of Shope Reno Wharton has completed many Shingle-style estates along the Eastern Seaboard—a theme chosen for its design diversity and sculptural possibilities—its reach has grown geographically over the years, opening the doors to all aesthetics. “But we have one rule,” principal Jerry Hupy says. “Whatever style it is, do it well!” And that they do. Drawing from the tenets of traditional and classical design, Hupy and his team marry these concepts with modern principles utilizing open floor plans and robust fenestration. “The focus on a building’s character is a hallmark of our work,” principal Michael McClung says. “Our structures are three-dimensional sculptural expressions, with carefully considered materiality and balance.” An important factor in those “expressions” is the interactive process between SRW and its clients, who Hupy describes as “smart, inquisitive and driven.” “Each client articulates their desires differently, and it is a valuable conversation when both parties listen and react,” he says. With completed projects in remote islands off the coast of Maine, to suburban communities and western ski towns, SRW consistently focuses its efforts on creating buildings with character.

“ Our philosophy is to create homes and spaces that reflect the location, owners’ interests, timeless design beliefs and a strong link to craftsmanship.”

Ask the Expert What is the key to life/work balance? Getting up each morning with purpose, whether it be personal or professional, and maintaining a high level of curiosity. Share your influences and inspirations. We have always been motivated by the essentials in architecture—light and shadow, solidity and void, rhythm, axis, scale, proportion and symmetry being some examples. Historical examples that powerfully utilize these ideas are always inspirational to us.

Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Well-resolved solutions, from the overall idea down to the details. Like great art, which has an impact from a distance and reveals more and more as you study it and move closer.

Located on the shore in Rhode Island, this home captures the spirit of the place, with generous wraparound porches, dramatic roof sweeps and playful Shingle-style detailing that combine for a timeless, seaside appearance. 4. Ask the Expert How can the client work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Trust them! I have heard that more than 100,000 decisions need to be made to build a house. We can help immensely, making good choices to maintain the vision, the look and the budget. We know how to prioritize the more and less important pieces, which is key to keeping to a price point. We also understand scale, preventing costly mistakes.

J. BANKS DESIGN GROUP When one sets out to purchase and customize a second home, the points of concern vary greatly from those that may arise in relation to a primary residence. Enter, Joni Vanderslice and her team at J. Banks Design Group. Many of the firm’s clients live in major metropolitan areas, but they vacation in Hilton Head Island, Tuscany, Cabo and Steamboat—and this is Vanderslice’s modus operandi. “We live the lifestyle they are trying to capture; we are the experts they need,” she says. “We know the questions to ask, what products will withstand weather and environmental effects in these areas and which ‘frivolities’ make a second home the dream home it should be. We get it right.” Certainly, her portfolio attests to that, as does her reputation among other trade pros. “Developers hire us to be their experts as well,” Vanderslice says. “We understand the elements of design that make sense for resort living, but we also inherently grasp the motivation—the wants, the needs and the expectations—of their target customer.” At any given time, J. Banks Design Group is working in upwards of 16 different states, with international projects taking the team to Canada, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Caribbean and beyond. For Vanderslice, this travel inspires further designs. Nature and fashion serve as muses, too.

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? We are a relationship-based business. While social media shares our work with a broader audience, we still believe in the personal connection we have with our clients. What project would you love to take on? A safari camp in East Africa.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS
CDK INTERIOR DESIGN For a professional in any field to receive repeat business is to be given a message: the client can’t imagine a better result. For those in creative pursuits, this is especially gratifying. Such is a high point in the story of Christy Dillard Kratzer, the president of CDK Interior Design. At the beginning of her career, she took on a project that would prove paramount, gaining attention and accolades that helped her move forward with the founding of her firm. Now, many years later, Kratzer has recently completed another home for those same clients, and her portfolio contains the residences of other longtime customers, too. Over the course of her two decades in business, Kratzer has not only designed residences, but commercial projects and lines of furniture. Considered a luminary of the Southeast, she has also participated in numerous show houses in the region. And where does she get the inspiration for such a varied and prolific body of work? “Travel is one of the most influential elements,” Kratzer says. “I also approach each project as a singular experience.” As that pertains to residential interiors, she adds, “Every design is specific to the client and location, so observation, listening and collaborating are crucial.”

Ask the Expert What style is your firm most known for? Whether traditional, modern or rustic, my projects are always inviting and warm. While I love pretty homes, I do not like fussy interiors, so I create places that are fresh and clean in line yet refined. I’m known for finding interesting, one-of-a-kind pieces—vintage, antique or contemporary—that instantly make a room singular and distinct, layered and unique. What project would you love to take on? A Parisian pied-à-terre, a New York City penthouse, a Santa Barbara casita … there is a multitude of places I would love to work. That said, Atlanta has provided me incredible opportunities. From homes in the city to mountain houses to lakeside retreats, I’ve created a diverse portfolio.

he sunset turns this house an incredible shade of pink, then there’s the bright green landscape and blue water,” says designer Kevin Walsh of the backdrop that helped set the tone for a vibrant vacation home in the South Carolina coastal village of Palmetto Bluff. Its colorful interiors were a welcome departure for owners Jason and Cassie LaFrance, who previously collaborated with Walsh on their more formal and restrained main residence in Arkansas. For a family getaway that would encourage long, leisurely summer days, “They wanted something tailored and pretty,” says the designer, “but also casual, comfortable and fun— without distracting from the jaw-dropping views.” Because the couple and their three young children spend weeks at a time in the Lowcountry, it was important that the house feel like home. In fact, they initially planned to build from scratch and were in the process of closing on a lot just down the street—that is, until Cassie went online in search of local design inspiration. “I came across this house listed for sale and loved it,” she recalls. Once Walsh personally toured the home alongside his clients, a watercolor vision for a family-friendly remodel came into view. Joining Walsh—and project manager William Lendermon— was architect Erik E. Puljung, who’d designed the original home back in 2009. His concept for the previous owners embraced the vernacular of the region as a window-clad historic river house with a two-story porch. When the LaFrances reached out about its renovation, Puljung was delighted. “As a doctor might describe ‘continuity of care,’ ” he explains, “I was honored to carry the torch and make changes appropriate for new owners.” The LaFrances “practically live in the kitchen,” Cassie explains, so for the home’s most significant structural change, general contractor Chris VanGeison added a large breakfast room and seating area where a small banquette and dining porch once stood adjacent to the cooking space. Between this new casual dining spot and the kitchen, Puljung opted for a cased opening in lieu of doors to “create connectivity

and a nice flow,” he says. Now, the LaFrances prepare meals before views of changing tides, roaming wildlife and pastel light out expansive windows while easily accommodating family and guests. The heart of the home became a prime playground for Walsh’s deft use of color. “Everything was beautiful, but more beige before—and Cassie tends to prefer crisp and clean,” the designer notes. Walsh’s team started by smoothing out the home’s hand-scraped wood floors and applying fresh paint to its 8-foot-tall, four-panel doors— which previously displayed a stained-wood finish. In the kitchen, this lighter look provided the foundation for unexpected pops of pink on pendants over the island, in turn inspiring the blushing subway tile backsplash and woven pink upholstery on the counter stools. “I didn’t go into the project thinking pink for the kitchen,” Cassie laughs. “But if there’s a time to take a risk, it’s with a vacation house—and I’m so glad we did.” That sense of adventure also swayed the selection of textiles and original art, which Walsh and Cassie curated together. “Our buying trips were exciting because we sampled fabric lines that were new to me and things I never considered myself brave enough to try,” she says. A bold Kelly Reemtsen painting in the media room triggered the pink and green scheme in the nearby dining room, where dogwood-print draperies converse with symmetrical plantings of crepe myrtles by landscape architect Daniel Keefer in the motor court beyond. Drawing the eye to the adjacent space, a macro photograph of a peony by Paul Lange extends an unabashed Southern welcome in the entryway. In rooms with the best views, Walsh allowed nature to take the spotlight. The light-filled living room, for example, features an abstract landscape by North Carolina artist Mary Rountree Moore above the fireplace that “could easily be our backyard,” says Cassie, adding that it blends with the soft blue and green textiles to enhance the panorama visible through the windows beyond. Here and elsewhere, accessories such as Murano glass bowls showcase Walsh’s penchant for collections and keep the design grounded in tradition. “Southerners are natural-born collectors,” he enthuses. “Those layers are what make a house interesting and give it personality.” With the Lowcountry as muse, this lively residence has set the stage for years of LaFrance family memories—from assembling puzzles at the game table off the pink and orange-accented media room to catching sunrises from a pair of cheery green armchairs in the new kitchen seating area. And while the design team notes the home’s finishes are a departure from those of neighboring residences, Cassie says “the magic of Kevin is that he was able to strike a balance of pushing the envelope while staying true to the home’s roots.” Adds Walsh, “It’s a fresh take on a beautiful, classic Southern home.”

o former Los Angeles dwellers Kaylee and David Wilson, there was something special about Tennessee designer Stephanie Sabbe. Her original yet familiar aesthetic had captured Kaylee’s attention well before a life transition spurred a return to her indie filmmaker husband’s native Nashville. “I followed her on Instagram for more than a year and loved her authenticity and her work,” Kaylee explains. “I knew moving here, we wanted to buy an old house and keep it old, and Stephanie would retain that character.” When the Wilsons reached out for the designer’s input on a home they’d purchased in Green Hills, “She saw the address and said, ‘Wait just a second—I live five doors down from this house!’ I think we were always meant to be neighbors,” Kaylee recounts. Serendipitously, Sabbe had just finished the renovation of her own family’s abode— built the same year as the Wilsons’, in 1926—so she was excited to put into practice everything she’d learned along the way. The Wilsons, for their part, were more than willing to put their faith in her hands. “From the get-go, there was this crazy synergy,” Sabbe recalls. “It really was like getting to design my home all over again, only this time, I got to do it even better.” Sabbe spearheaded a renovation that involved reworking the traditional floor plan to open the kitchen to the living spaces, even closing up a window to gain additional cabinetry space. “People are hesitant to do that,” says Sabbe. “But it allowed the Wilsons to have a proper kitchen layout, and there’s still plenty of natural light.” Sabbe’s direction also added decorative cedar beams alongside an existing structural support in the ceiling. “I wanted them to look intentional—like they’d always been there,” she says, adding how the home’s original, load-bearing brick chimney was camouflaged between

two cased openings—a move that gave the Wilsons the open floor plan they craved and allowed them to cook while watching their children play in the family room simultaneously. Upstairs in the master suite, the renovation captured several square feet from the bedroom to create a larger, more luxurious bathroom. But Sabbe’s manner of addressing the cozy, cocooning sleeping quarters meant the reduced footprint was virtually unnoticeable. Once she’d improved functionality for the family, Sabbe says she and the Wilsons entered a “total trust zone,” with the designer receiving carte blanche to curate a storied, soulful look. “We pretty much have identical personal styles, so anything I dragged over there—a vintage portrait sketch, Oushak rugs, Swedish monk chairs—they were always game for everything,” she says. Most of those finds came from Sabbe’s scourings of her self-professed “secret haunts” in Tennessee, some of which she repurposed for modernday needs—such as shortening the legs of an Amish-made table found at the local flea market to create a makeshift coffee table. Antiques—especially English-inspired ones—were central to Sabbe’s vision, but they were also incredibly personal for Kaylee. “I grew up in a family where antiques were appreciated,” she says. “We were taught from early childhood that furniture is an art and should be taken care of and passed down like stories. Stephanie also subscribes to that idea, and she has a way of making old things feel very fresh.” For example: A duo of carved antique chairs flanks a modern concrete console in the family room, while contemporary sconces illuminate framed oil paintings at the master bedside. Surprisingly, “This was one of the first projects I’ve worked on where I felt like I got to truly flex my creative muscles in their entirety,” Sabbe reveals, adding that the Wilsons were unfazed when she suggested hanging a portrait of a man they didn’t know in the cozy, cinnamonhued dining room. “I think they understood he would add age and character in a way a new acquisition couldn’t.” Layering the home one space at a time, Sabbe addressed each as if it were a standalone chapter in a good novel. “It was like a domino effect—one room after the other,” she says, noting how paint colors throughout offer clues to her approach. “Of course, we wanted things to feel cohesive, but that variation you see was deliberate. I don’t think you can truly appreciate color unless you experience the relief of it.” Her philosophy on patterns proved much the same: “They deliver more impact when you’ve had a break from them nearby, and the juxtapositions create a rhythm as you move through the house.” For the Wilsons, that rhythm is somewhat like life itself—always in flux and, thankfully, always bringing a new adventure around the next corner.

Designer Stephanie Sabbe’s talent for marrying old and new comes into play in the family room of this Nashville home, where antique Swedish monk chairs, reupholstered in a green Kravet velvet, flank a waterfall concrete console by Wisteria. Sabbe drew inspiration from English country houses for the kitchen, inserting the homeowners’ existing vintage copper pots, an antique jug from the Nashville Flea Market and a brass-framed landscape by Bruno Monteiro through her own online shop. But she was keen to modernize things, too, choosing Wishbone-style counter stools and Barn Light Electric Co. pendants to illuminate the room without obstructing views.

Blue and white pillows in fabrics by Elizabeth Eakins and Michael S. Smith for Jasper soften the nook, where the homeowners’ copper chargers serve as punctuation points. Opposite: Straddling the line between relaxed and formal, the dry bar connects the home’s dining room to its screened porch. Sabbe created impact with color using Benjamin Moore’s Summer Nights. The room’s original floors influenced her selection of wallcovering— Arbutus by Morris & Co.—while vintage paintings, baskets and crocks reinforce the tawny palette.

Surrounded by built-in bookcases and completed with swing-arm brass sconces by Visual Comfort & Co., the soaking tub proffers the little luxury of having tomes at one’s fingertips. A vintage Turkish rug and antique chair emphasize the library-like feel. Below, right: Brass hardware and floors laid with honed Carrara marble from Concepts in Tile and Stone contrast with the deep tone of the master bathroom cabinetry by MidSouth Custom Cabinets. Just over the threshold, the master bedroom offers a light and airy reprieve.

“I AM ON A CONSTANT INNER SEARCH FOR CREATIVITY AND INSPIRATION.”
M
onday morning is my favorite time of the week. I love working and will have been thinking about so much over the weekend that I couldn’t sleep in on Monday if I wanted to,” confesses Caleb Woodard. Following nearly 12 years in Washington, D.C., the highconcept furniture craftsman was happy to trade hour-long commutes for two-minute walks to work in his hometown of Springfield, Tennessee, a sleepy place about 25 miles north of Nashville. He says relocating, family in tow, about seven years ago has been the best thing for his work-life balance, his creative process and, ultimately, his business. “Being relaxed has allowed me to be more involved with my ideas,” explains Woodard, who begins each project with a meditation. “I spend a lot of time just sitting quietly— and that’s when most of the work happens. Picasso said without great solitude, no serious work is possible.” Woodard set up shop in a 1920s brick building one block off the town’s historic square. The shotgun-style space is roomy enough to accommodate a carving room and streetfront studio—its original tin-tile ceilings and stripped plaster walls providing an atmospheric backdrop for Woodard’s otherworldly silhouettes. One wouldn’t be at fault for discerning hints of Constantin Brâncuși or Jean Arp in his oeuvre, though Woodard won’t make those comparisons himself. He is quick, however, to cite legendary sculptors, rather than furniture makers, as his greatest influencers. At age 6, “my dad taught me traditional mortise and tenon, and how to dovetail, but I’d be sneaking off to the side with a block of wood just making shapes out of it,” recalls Woodard, who says it took a long time to embrace his
LX_SE05_SM_Woodard_4.indd 191
idiosyncrasy. “I learned to move more instinctually to excel in the details.” He focused on perfecting his techniques, rather than trying to be unique. “Matisse said that anything good within you will come out.” While Woodard employs a few traditional methods, like stack lamination—à la Wendell Castle or Isamu Noguchi— most of his processes are more proprietary. “Some pieces have more than 200,000 hand-applied textures and up to 400 hours spent detailing them,” he explains. In an era when nearly everything can be 3D printed and automated, “these are impossible to replicate by machine.” Most are made from air-dried domestic hardwoods like walnut and ash, but Woodard has dabbled in ebonized sassafrass and often reaches for imported mahogany to fashion the elaborate hand-carved doors that comprise a quarter of his work—a majority for elite private residences in Miami, L.A., the Bay Area, the Hamptons and New York. Considering his designer clients range from Kelly Behun to Joe Nahem to Amy Lau, it’s surprising to learn that only three of his commissions to date have come from the Southeast. In fact, Woodard hosts out-of-town talents so often he plans to build a stylized designer cottage on the property surrounded by courtyard gardens. Until then, “My focus is exploring this allegorical, textural work,” he says. “I’m constantly aware of the brevity of life; that there’s only so much time to do what I’m meant to.”
Craftsman Caleb Woodard’s atmospheric Tennessee studio features stripped original plaster walls (opposite). Some pieces incorporate as many as 200,000 hand-applied textures (top, left). To-scale maquettes stand in for full-size pieces he later produced (above).

ometimes you just know. Like when the graceful gesture of a curving staircase feels like your grandmother gathering you up in her arms. Or when the wise whisper of mature old oaks calls your name. “The minute we walked in the door, it immediately felt like home,” says the new owner of a “grand dame” of a 1939 abode in Charlotte with a well-told story of its own. “It reminded my husband of going across the street to his grandparents’ house.” Situated in highly desirable Myers Park—a historic Queen City neighborhood where lemonade stands and shady oldgrowth trees still abound—the residence initially attracted the family of four thanks to its classic proportions: high ceilings, generous rooms and the balanced hallmarks of traditional Georgian architecture. But also central to the home’s appeal were less-tangible ingredients: nostalgia and timeless good style. The couple’s instincts were upheld when a design-industry comrade, designer Charlotte Lucas, walked through and gave the residence an enthusiastic thumbs-up. “It was a gorgeous old house with huge potential; it just hadn’t been updated,” explains Lucas, who worked with residential designer Frank Smith and general contractor Phil Goodwin to mastermind its transformation. Part historic preservation, part renovation, the project involved conserving the house’s stately front façade while more than doubling the square footage along the back— capitalizing on the abundant acreage of a rare double lot. “We wanted to keep that old house feeling, but make it warm, colorful and comfortable. A happy family home,” says the wife, who initially joined weekly brainstorming gatherings with Lucas, Smith and Goodwin to hone the vision for its revitalization. “It was valuable to have different perspectives of our overall goal, and a great team effort,” Lucas notes. Both North Carolina natives, the owners share generational ties to furniture-industry stalwarts based in nearby Hickory. Mutual to their childhoods were frequent visits to their families’

factories, watching expert craftspeople and finishers at work, so their appreciation for quality workmanship runs deep—as does their collection of heirloom furniture. “It was a dream,” says Lucas, who began by inventorying the pieces her clients already owned, such as a pair of pagoda-style cabinets designed by Oscar de la Renta that she gave pride of place in the entryway. Still, “The clients encouraged my creativity, with freedom to use whatever brands I wanted,” Lucas assures. “But we already love so many of the manufacturers in their families’ stable, and my team usually pulls from them anyway.” Besides tearing out thick green carpet to reveal beautiful wood floors and enlarging the windows, the home’s public spaces didn’t undergo huge structural changes. “It was more about sprucing up, using design to cohesively blend the old with the new for a consistent, hip-traditional feel throughout,” explains Lucas, who held true to her reputation for harnessing bold patterns and high-impact hues. To accent the graceful curve of the original staircase, she chose a mod graphic wallpaper: “something crazy and fun in what was previously a very traditional foyer.” In the living room, a similarly florid chinoiserie wallcovering with an alabaster backdrop directly influenced the chromatic textiles employed throughout: colors such as Prussian blue, smoky sage and a vibrant poppy used for silk draperies and cornices that “nod to the history of the room, but in an updated way.” This warm palette bleeds into a cozy library lined with stained white pine paneling, a leopard print wall and even more Chinese motifs, whereas the kitchen is comparatively quiet. Here, Lucas let the gray-stained maple island serve as a grounding force amid the room’s more contemporary plasterwork, bringing in black and white marbles and unlacquered brass for contrast. Club chairs upholstered in a custom pink velvet from the husband’s family’s mill make a big impact in the adjacent family room, where a bright floral sofa captures the crisp, happy, punchy feel Lucas and the wife were after. From this vantage point at the rear of the house, one can easily recognize more contemporary architecture at work, although the transition is almost imperceptible until you sit up and deliberately take notice. In this space, 9-foot-tall glass windows and doors, painted off black, create contrast with the surrounding white walls while framing the lush trees beyond. The dark frames have the uncanny effect of removing barriers, “like you’re at one with nature,” Smith notes. Looking at that backyard—it’s where the previous owner’s daughter was married and where her son’s rehearsal dinner was held—you can almost envision the home’s past as clearly as its present. “This was where she raised her family, and now where we plan to raise ours,” the wife adds warmly. Because of the design team’s committed efforts to restore it, this special residence will stand the test of time. “It’s one of those rare houses that will be loved the rest of its life,” Smith says. And thanks to homeowners who opted to steward it into the future rather than start anew, that life will be much longer.

In the entryway of this stately Charlotte home, general contractor Phil Goodwin rebuilt the grand staircase railings, retaining the grace of the original. Designer Charlotte Lucas chose a Lee Jofa wallpaper—Graffito by Kelly Wearstler—to enliven the traditional room. A hanging lantern by The Urban Electric Co. adds punch. The marble and brass table is vintage.

Draperies and cornices fabricated in Sahco’s Cosimo silk offer a nod to the home’s 1940s roots—but in a contemporary hue. Below: Old-world elegance meets feminine flair in the living room, where a midcentury-esque Julian Chichester daybed wearing Thibaut’s Kuba fabric relaxes the formality of Schumacher’s sumptuous Madame De Pompadour wallcovering. “The breakfast room feels a bit like a greenhouse,” says Lucas, who chose a brass and opal chandelier by The Urban Electric Co. to anchor the casual dining space, where the clients’ existing rug and a wood ceiling serve as grounding elements. The latter is the work of residential designer Frank Smith, who likewise suggested Farrow & Ball’s Off Black for the window trim due to its ability to draw the eye outside.
