BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

INSPIRATION

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. Eldorado Stone’s philosophy creates authentic architectural products that transform spaces through color and texture.

ARTISANAL CRAFTSMANSHIP Eldorado Stone products are handcrafted through a detail-oriented, laborintensive process. Each stone is hand-painted by master artisans, infusing multiple layers of color to the stone’s unique textured surface to create a highly authentic appearance.

LibertÉ ÉgalitÉ FraternitÉ 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Paris has always gotten it right

The French have strong ideals, strong opinions and strong wines. So in 1976, when the historic Judgment of Paris awarded Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay best white wine, the world took notice and the wine world would never be the same. Forty years later, we’re still celebrating the sip heard round the world.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

RADAR / DEBUT

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

THE INSIDER AUBRIE PICK

As a food, lifestyle and interior photographer, Aubrie Pick finds beauty almost everywhere she looks. When she’s not peering through a lens, she can be found hiking through the hills of San Francisco with her scruffy pet pooch. aubriepick.com

WHO: Designer Caitlin Flemming, founder of lifestyle-and-interior design blog Sacramento Street. Growing up in a family that lived abroad and traveled often, she developed a discerning eye for architecture and design early on in life.

WHY: Because you’ll quickly find that living vicariously through her dreamy vignettes will fuel your own personal home decorating and travel fantasies all at the same time. IN HER WORDS: “I like to have photographs that chronicle my life as a designer. Sometimes they are images I capture while I am in the midst of creating a design, others are things I notice that inspire me—both at home and when I travel. I am always searching for inspiration that will help continue to form my aesthetic.”

One to watch: Meg Shiffler is someone you will want to keep an eye on. She’s been a passionate advocate for the local arts scene for more than a decade, and as gallery director for the wonderful San Francisco Arts Commission, she has helped keep the San Francisco arts community alive and vital through both boom and bust.

CURATOR GALLERY WENDI NORRIS

“At the gallery, we try to engage in a holistic and transparent manner with our artists and collectors—both nationally and internationally. When building your own personal art collection, buy what you love and what you can afford. A collection built on genuine interest and passion fuels one’s life, adding greater depth, beauty and even a sense of pride. When you can, get to know the artists you love and participate in your local arts scene—ideally using your gallerist as the catalyst. A great new artist to watch is Firelei Báez. Born in the Dominican Republic with Haitian ancestry, she rewrites previously untold or improperly documented histories of the colonial, economic and racial roots of the Caribbean through her intricate works on paper, canvas and sculpture.” –Wendi Norris, gallerywendinorris.com 112 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE INSIDER PHOTOS: AUBRIE PICK. INSTACRUSH PHOTOS: COURTESY CAITLIN FLEMMING. CURATOR PHOTO: COURTESY GALLERY WENDI NORRIS.

Favorite hidden gem: I love stopping into the Eleanor Harwood Gallery. She has great artists like James Chronister and Paul Wackers on her roster. It may not stay hidden for long, though, as the gallery has recently opened a brand-new space in Dogpatch.

@caitlinflemming

WHAT: Expect to find crisp, breezy interiors images coupled with irresistible travel shots from around the globe, from ornate tile exteriors in Porto, Portugal, to fresh, vibrant radishes and classic bistro chairs in France.

For the design-obsessed: The antiques gallery Coup D’Etat is a must-stop shop; Darin Geise and his team are risk-takers and outside-the-box thinkers with a real eye for curating and bold statements. Together, they reimagine the showroom to dramatic effect every few months, so it’s always worth checking out. Add to your agenda: At the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the programming is always innovative, unexpected and inclusive—and its Daniel Libeskind design makes it worth a visit in and of itself.

THE NWBLK

When did you open? Originally we started as a guerilla art gallery in my garage, but the storefront in its current iteration in the Mission District opened its doors in September 2012. Why the Mission District? The building that we are in is a gem in a neighborhood that is burgeoning. We happened upon it at just the right time, and the rest is history. On the floor? It’s our mission to find and sell the best of the applied arts—we sell objects that have a purpose and utility. We find the coolest furniture, lighting, accessories, clothing and design objects and even venture sometimes into interaction and interface as well as graphic design. Describe the space… The building was initially a commissioned facility for American Can Company and later served as the San Francisco city sign shop creating signs for wayfinding all over town. When we took the building on, we were careful to maintain its intrinsic value while adding minimal improvements. It’s a stunning open space in the international style—lots of raw concrete and steel details accentuated by clerestory windows. thenwblk.com 114 / LUXESOURCE.COM

DATE BOOK Spending her days as a young girl voraciously thumbing through magazines and clipping her favorite images to make into collages in her journal, Caroline Cecil was bound for a vocation inspired by color. Years later, her obsession for vibrant palettes and eye-catching patterns manifested in a career as a lauded textile artist, designing for the likes of Carolina Herrera and Angela Adams before starting her own brand, Caroline Cecil Textiles. Her new Balinesia line—recently launched at De Sousa Hughes—celebrates the rich plant life, historic temples and ancient textiles of the Indonesian archipelago, featuring geometric border prints, banana palms and reptilian-inspired dotted stripes. When she’s not creating textiles, Cecil also pens the informative blog, La Vie Imprimée, where she details the people, places and products that inspire her. to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

GROW

INTO THE WILD

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS THE-CITIZENRY.COM

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 164 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

NATURAL

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

SET THE TONE SERENA & LILY

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 168 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

LEVEL HEADED THE DESIGN TEAM: Interior Design / Ken Fulk Inc Home Builder / Cal-C.A.D.E. Construction Inc. Landscape Architecture / Hill/Stephens Design

THE CHALLENGE: Modernize a Pacific Heights Victorian for a New York couple and their three children who crave an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. THE WORK: First, the interiors were tackled by designer Ken Fulk, who put a contemporary spin on the home by raising—or, in some cases, completely eliminating—doorways and removing walls. Older houses just come with more walls and rooms than modern families actually need, and the new open layout plays a wonderful counterpoint to the home’s classic exterior. Next, landscape designer Stephanie Stillman Stephens, working with her partner,

landscape architect Jeanette T. Hill, gave the property a sleek update by complementing existing concrete walls and glass railings with a stainless-steel outdoor kitchen. A Mediterranean plant palette of rosemary, creeping thyme and olive trees went in along with blackened-steel planters that frame an unapologetic and maintenance-free lawn of artificial turf. THE RESULT: “The outdoor space had fantastic bones,” Stillman Stephens says of the backyard’s bi-level topography. “But we wanted to refine it and tailor it to the owners’ needs.”

THE CHALLENGE: Convert a 60th-floor penthouse into an open, airy weekend pied-à-terre, all while honoring its sweeping panoramas—spanning the Bay Bridge to the Farallon Islands. THE WORK: Tackling both the interior design and interior architecture, David Todd Oldroyd devised a floor plan premised entirely on charting the way light moves through this spectacular outlook each day. “The apartment faces east, south and west,” he explains. “The main entertainment spaces and daily routines, as well as the most fantastic views, happen along the south and southeast.” The unusual trapezoidal shape of the terrace

also became integral to Oldroyd’s design. “I’m a big believer in context,” he says. “The portion of the rectangular floor plan that the developer had sliced out for the terrace was unique to this apartment.” So Oldroyd brought this geometry indoors in all manner of ways. He designed the floor to be laid out in a series of trapezoidshaped Flavigny limestone slabs, which had to fit within a sixty-fourth of an inch and were laid with no grout. THE RESULT: “We used the fewest materials possible to achieve a minimal, serene but rich environment,” explains Oldroyd. “This simplicity is extraordinarily difficult to produce but unparalleled in its ability to awe.”

THE CHALLENGE: Transform a California ranch house into a more contemporary, light-filled version of the style, using natural materials and flexible spaces with strong indoor-outdoor connections. THE WORK: Retaining only the existing footprint and one fireplace, architect Charlie Barnett opened up the rooms to flow into one another and opened up the house to its wooded lot. On the exterior, he used Western red cedar cladding and mahogany on the doors and windows to warm up the new flat-roofed, rectilinear structure. A serene outdoor bathing area, featuring a Barcelona tub by Concreteworks, was designed to underscore the indooroutdoor aesthetic. “We tried to bring in a lot of materiality so it doesn’t read as a stark modern house,” says Barnett. THE RESULT: The design works as a whole to move from the scenic outdoor spaces to the warm light-filled interiors and back again. “It really integrates the understanding that we live in California,” says interior designer Paul Vincent Wiseman. 178 / LUXESOURCE.COM

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

GORDON + GREINEDER As architects Eileen Gordon and William Greineder see it, their role is to realize each client’s vision, distilling the homeowner’s aesthetic and functional needs and desires while creating an elegant home that reflects the personalities of those who dwell within it. Given this wellrounded perspective on design, it should come as no surprise that the principals of renowned firm Gordon + Greineder consider alfresco living space a crucial part of each project. “It is important to make a decision from the start as to whether the outdoor space is to be integrated with the main house as a continuation of the home’s aesthetic, stand in contrast as a sculptural addition to the site or become a destination, like a sanctuary or secluded contemplative space,” Gordon says. With a portfolio comprising structures of every style, Gordon and Greineder are well-equipped to extend any aesthetic to the outdoors. “We have a reputation for attention to detail and timeless craftsmanship, whether the desired style is traditional period accuracy or a more contemporary expression,” Greineder says.

Thoughtful orientation, with respect to shade and sun and the sight lines of the home, is key to a welldesigned outdoor space.

THE MODERN OUTDOORS Open-air floor plan. Create outdoor rooms that are partially bound by elements like low walls, benches, fire pits, fountains, fences, overhangs, paving and greenery. Seamless transitions. Minimize the lines of division, so when doors and windows are open, the walls, floors and ceilings continue as smoothly as possible. High-tech. “Technologies are changing to catch up to our design ideas,” Klopf says. “Now there are sliding door systems through which giant pocketing doors disappear to flow the interior space to the exterior, but also provide a significant visual connection when closed.”

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: EICHLER-INSPIRED OPEN CONCEPT “My favorite indoor-outdoor project at the moment is the Modern Atrium House we designed in Belmont,” Klopf says. “The living spaces are organized around a courtyard with large doors and windows that promote visual connection from one wing of the house to another. The living room’s multiple walls of glass make it feel as if it starts somewhere in the courtyard and ends somewhere in the backyard.” OUTDOOR LIVING

THAYER HOPKINS ARCHITECTS “Spaces are just empty places with absent people,” says architect Thayer Hopkins. “It is the question of how we wish to inhabit those outdoor spaces: to live, interact with nature and experience more fully a natural context that informs the process of designing an environment.” It is this kind of thinking that has propelled Hopkins’ namesake firm, Thayer Hopkins Architects, to the forefront of the indoor-outdoor design industry in San Francisco. Hopkins, the firm’s principal, and Christopher Lagos, associate principal, encourage clients to think of an outdoor space in terms of how it will be used. “Think first about your intentions for the space and how you hope to live in it,” Lagos says.

ZETERRE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE “We are deliberately noniconic,” says Jarrod Baumann, founder and proprietor of Zeterre Landscape Architecture. “We feel it is critical for a design to be specific to the site and appropriate to the architecture, and we pride ourselves on creating gardens of original and unique outdoor ambience.” Known for landscapes that both function and inspire, Baumann and his team create through a programmatic process in which knowledge of the client is of the utmost importance. Thus, Baumann’s advice for homeowners focuses on communication. “Bring the landscape architect in early on,” he says. “Our best projects happen when we collaborate and site plan with the design team and family from the very beginning.”

BESPOKE INNOVATIONS Progressive approach. “We are always on the lookout for new materials to use in creative ways,” Baumann says. “I’ve designed undulating stainless-steel retaining walls, used onyx sinks to create fountains and used steel bamboo in a chicken coop/Zen garden. I love breaking rules and doing things that have never been done before.” Custom design. Asked to note one of his favorite outdoor products, Baumann points to a stainless-steel ipe chaise lounge he designed. “It has nice lines, a builtin cocktail table and was designed for really wonderful clients,” he says. Conservation. On the movement toward environmentally friendly living, Baumann is an expert. “I have hired the leading permaculturist in the nation to work with me on my own 40 acres in Sonoma,” he says. “I’m learning a lot about rainwater harvesting and creative techniques that cross over to high-end design. My goal is to become so efficient with rainwater collection you won’t even notice an aesthetic change in our gardens.”

uilding in extreme environments calls for an extreme design, and that’s just what Olle Lundberg delivered for his clients’ jawdropping cliffside property in San Francisco. The owners, a couple with an affinity for collecting art, purchased the site and challenged Lundberg— who studied sculpture before becoming an architect—to reimagine the dated residence that occupied it as a livable piece of art. Lundberg responded by transforming the existing structure into a home, marked by ipe, glass, concrete and steel, which manages to feel both anchored and weightless. “It’s an incredibly dramatic site,” Lundberg says. “The structure is embedded in the rock, but there are elements that allow you to hover above everything.” Working with project architect Caroline Nassif, Lundberg began the transformation by lowering the house 6 feet. “The garage level was originally 4 feet below the first floor,” Lundberg explains. “So, we lowered it an additional 6 feet to extend the first floor over the garage and create a more functional basement level.” In addition to handling the structure’s remodel, builder Glen Sherman—who acted

as project manager alongside site superintendent Ace Robey and assistant project manager Mindy Jennings— oversaw the excavation and securing the house to the cliffside. “Digging down and anchoring that foundation into the rock was a feat,” he says. “The work was delicate due to the sensitive geology. It was a difficult site in terms of building, but it had the biggest payoff, because this house has the most unbelievable views.” The architects continued the makeover by rewrapping the house with horizontal ipe siding. “Originally, the cladding was horizontal wood siding,” says Nassif. “But it had been renovated over the years and had wood shingles before we remodeled it.” Lundberg wanted to keep the exterior in character with the neighborhood, but on the inside, he wanted to entirely recreate the architectural experience. Working closely with the project’s structural engineer, GFDS Engineers, he removed the switchback staircase and replaced it with two single-run sets of stairs marked by glass railings and floating steeland-wood treads. “The materials helped create a stair that was well-anchored, but most importantly, we wanted to be

able to see through the stairs in both directions,” says Lundberg. “It looks and feels almost skeletal.” The architect then replaced the adjacent wall with a massive steel grid of windows, which looks into a nearly four-story light well lined with large granite rocks. More glass was employed on the third level with a bridge that connects the master bedroom to an additional bedroom on the opposite side of the floor. The bridge, in turn, acts as a partial ceiling for the dining area on the second level below. Together, the glass wall, the floating staircase—with its glass railing—and the bridge all work together as part of one composition to pull light into the center of the house. “The light well runs from the basement level almost to

the top floor and brings in natural light from different directions,” says Lundberg, who rounded out the second level with the entry, living room and kitchen. A family room, small kitchenette and bedroom fill the first floor, and the basement is below that. When it came to furnishing the new spaces, designer Jennifer Jones took an equally artful approach. “The interior design is restrained because the views take center stage,” says Jones, who worked with senior designer Lynn Trinh. “We incorporated new pieces with low-profile vintage and bespoke furniture with light, graceful silhouettes.” In the dining area, Jones designed a custom dining table to have a walnut top and rectangular Lucite legs. “The table appears to be floating,” says Jones, noting the shape

of the legs is echoed in the forms of the glass pendants suspended overhead. “The clients found the pendants on a trip to Europe. They were very collaborative and love to discover unique things. They didn’t want anything in the house that they’d seen before.” In keeping with that idea, Jones designed built-in bench seating for a nook in the living room. And for the study, she created a sideboard with matchbook walnut on the front and steel with a waterfall effect on the sides. “Our clients were as passionate about eco-friendliness as they were about aesthetics,” Jones says. “All of the custom furniture was locally fabricated, and the upholstered pieces have natural latex-foam inserts wrapped in organic wool.” Most of the vintage selections the designers placed are ones they refurbished. “We re-covered the seats of the dining chairs and powder-coated the steel legs,” Jones says. “We also reupholstered chairs for the family room using green cottonvelvet.” The oak floors are reclaimed, as well, with a distinctive end-grain pattern Lundberg selected. “The subcontractor had a photograph of the beams next to the barn they came from,” says Nassif. “The clients just treasured it.” Bringing the sculptural feel of the house outside, landscape architect Andrea Cochran devised dynamic designs for the front and rear yards. “Since the site is on the edge of a cliff, we had the opportunity to do something dramatic,” says Cochran, who designed Cor-Ten steel balconies for the front façade that cantilever over the cliffside. “They provide a thrill and engage you with the landscape.” In the back, Cochran created a meditative garden with a deck, a modernist fire pit and oversize stones that function as seating. The landscape, architecture and interiors all come together in a way that honors and enhances the experience of the dramatic property. Indeed, the transparent nature of the structure reveals a connection to its surroundings that’s almost visceral. “When you’re in that light well, you’re looking at the granite wall,” Lundberg says. “You experience a sense of solidity and feel strongly tied to the rock. But elsewhere, the glass, the views and that height—they make you feel like you’re soaring.”

PIECE by PIECE USING JAGGED PORCELAIN FRAGMENTS EN MASSE, BERKELEY ARTIST RECHENG TSANG CREATES WALL HANGINGS THAT EVOKE A STRIKINGLY DELICATE PRESENCE. WRITTEN BY TARYN BICKLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN LOKEN

I

am not surprised that I’m an artist,” says ReCheng Tsang. “I’m surprised that it took me as long as it did to recognize that I wanted to pursue an artistic life.” Tsang—who grew up in the Berkeley area after her family emigrated from Taiwan—was brought up amid a colorful array of tie-dye, weavings and ceramics thanks to her mom, a textile designer, who holds art and creativity in high esteem. “Even when we were very young, my mom taught us to look for beauty in common, everyday objects,” explains Tsang. That creative spark eventually caught up with Tsang, who ventured out in her early 20s to live in Japan. During that time, looking for a creative outlet, she apprenticed at a pottery studio in Kanazawa. “Almost as soon as I sat down in front of the wheel,” she says, “I fell in love with the silky feeling of clay in my hands.” Although she became adept at throwing, her interests lied more with form than function. Back in Berkeley, she continued to

experiment with clay and eventually developed her first wall hangings marked by her signature monochromatic expanse of small bits of porcelain affixed to felt. “I don’t treat the porcelain as precious, perfect objects,” explains Tsang. “Rather, the porcelain I create is beautifully flawed with jagged, fragile edges. Each individual piece bears the marks of my hand.” This arduous process means Tsang can spend upwards of 30 hours on one work. “Each piece is rolled, pinched, pulled, torn or otherwise manipulated by hand, then composed within a predefined grid,” she says. Up until now, her creations—represented through Gallery Lulo in Healdsburg—have come together within a muted palette. But Tsang has recently begun exploring with hand-painting the porcelain. “This is my first serious foray into working with brighter palettes,” she admits. “I am naturally drawn to softer tones, but I also love candy colors. I am slowly allowing that side of me to come out through my work.”

“THE PORCELAIN I CREATE IS BEAUTIFULLY FLAWED WITH JAGGED, FRAGILE EDGES.”

MODERN INDUSTRY A CALISTOGA HOME REFERENCES THE UNIQUE HISTORY OF ITS LOCALE WHILE OFFERING LIVABLE SPACES TAILORED TO ITS OWNERS.

ome decisions take time and considerable debate before eventually coming to a conclusion. This wasn’t the case, however, when an Illinois couple first saw the site of their future home—a hilltop property with a pool house—in Calistoga. “You’re surrounded by a forest of oak trees and madrones,” says the husband. “The vistas are jaw-dropping, with views of Mount Saint Helena and all the way down Napa Valley.” Enchanted by the property, the couple purchased it that same day. After enjoying the site and its pool house for some time, they called on their trusted architect, Kathryn Quinn, to design a main house that would honor the bucolic setting. Quinn, who is based in Chicago, began the project by researching the area’s mining history. “The vernacular of this locale consists of industrial and agrarian buildings,” she says. “Those styles would easily allow for a design that seemed as if it were added to over time, with distinctly different roof and room shapes, depending on their function. We were looking for that kind of relaxed

approach.” Following that lead, the architect devised an L-shaped floor plan arranged around a courtyard, and turned to utilitarian materials such as concrete and galvanized steel to give the house an industrial feel. “The metal reinforces the idea that this is the type of building one would have historically found on this site,” says Quinn. The thoughtful selection of building products also underscored the home’s additive design. “If a building was constructed at the turn of the century and then added onto 30 years later, the products would be different,” says builder Ryan Eames, who worked with partner and general superintendent Jack Wagoner on the project. “So we used different windows—some are black aluminum and some are clear anodized aluminum.” When it came to logistics, the couple wanted the home to be big enough to comfortably accommodate visits from both their children and grandchildren. “By the same token, we didn’t want to be in a big knock-around place where we’re walking by a bunch of empty bedrooms when we’re there

alone,” the husband says. Quinn addressed that concern by putting the main living spaces on the second floor, with guest suites and a large sitting room on the ground floor. “The children have the freedom to run in and out and play in the courtyard,” she says. “And it’s a nice segregation, creating privacy for the guests and the owners.” The master suite was also placed on the second floor “to grab the light and the spectacular views,” adds Quinn. On that main second level, the architect kept the plan open, creating one large space for the living and dining areas, which are anchored on either end by French doors. A roof monitor—also seen on agrarian and factory buildings— allows shards of light to dance through the space and helps to visually define the living areas. “It’s like the mother ship, and then you have all of these smaller pieces coming off of it,” explains Quinn, who also employed wood-and-steel trusses, adding to the industrial feel. Because the couple entertain often, they wanted the kitchen to be in the midst of the

activity, between the living and dining areas, which dictated having low walls. “With the kitchen in the center, people can help with cooking or the children can watch grandma make cookies,” says Quinn. Additionally, a burnished-steel surround sheathes the unit, while the cabinetry and adjacent pantry are marked by stainless steel. When it came to appointing the spaces of the home, the couple turned to longtime friend and designer Chicagobased Arlene Semel. “It was a given that she’d come on board,” says the wife, who many years ago began her business of selling artisan-made items through an antiques shop Semel owned at the time and has since opened her own shop, Adesso, in Highland Park, Illinois. “We’re very attached,” says Semel. “It’s hard to know when my thoughts end and hers begin and vice versa.” In approaching the design, Semel, working with principal Brian Snow and senior designer Mary Ennis-Smith, took inspiration from the “clients’ desire for a comfortable, unique and interesting environment,” she says.

The dining area looks out to the screened porch and features a custom table with a blackened-steel base from Tucker Robbins in New York and Tulip chairs by Saladino Furniture. The linen work by Gino Levi-Montalcini hangs above a steel buffet from Intérieurs in New York. The chandelier is also from Intérieurs.

Quinn created the screened porch as a transitional space between the indoors and outside, and the designers appointed it with a Gloster sofa upholstered with a Perennials fabric. The dining table features a leathered Ubatuba-stone top fabricated by Rock Tops in Crete, Illinois.

That starting point and their shared history come through in the seamless way new furnishings mingle with custom and repurposed items alongside the couple’s beloved antiques. In the open living area, “we made the sofas a little higher and more sheltered, so that they create their own living space,” says Semel. A Stark rug further defines the living area, and a custom coffee table was created by combining a large grape picker’s basket the wife had owned for years with a custom base and an artisan-made glass top. “It was important to all of us that we include some ‘old friends’ in this new house,” says Semel about incorporating the couple’s existing treasures. To play off the antique pieces, the designers also infused the spaces with striking contemporary items such as the steel chandelier hovering above the sleek steel-and-concrete dining table. “They help create some modernity in the furniture that relates to the house,” says Semel. “We thought the chandelier had an interesting relationship to the metal ties between the beams.” A linen wall hanging by artist Gino Levi-Montalcini adorns the space, which keeps to a soft white palette and opens through French doors to a screened porch. The porch— with its exposed corrugated-steel walls—offers the owners a cozy respite. “It’s comfortable for reading, it’s where we eat breakfast, and it’s great for entertaining,” the wife says. Outside, landscape architect Ron Lutsko, Jr. bordered the home with landscaping that seems, in some areas, to meld into the natural surroundings. “The homeowners wanted to exemplify the beauty that was already there, so our approach was to place plantings that highlighted the architecture and connected it with the site,” says Lutsko, who worked with project manager Laura Jerrard to add manzanita, native iris, phlomis, euphorbia, native grasses and other plantings. “We also created outdoor living spaces between the house and more natural areas on the property.” Additional spaces were designed to accommodate the owners’ sculptures, and raised planter boxes were installed for growing vegetables. With the couple’s home now complete, it stands as a collaborative work of art, tucked gently into nature’s beauty. “The light is incredible as it moves through the rooms,” Semel says. “The house has a sense of romanticism and discovery.”

FROM HIS BAYVIEW STUDIO, MIKE DANIELSON REMAKES SALVAGED MATERIALS INTO SLEEK FURNISHINGS THAT SEAMLESSLY INTERTWINE FORM AND FUNCTION. WRITTEN BY TATE GUNNERSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALANNA HALE

“I GREW UP IN THE TRADES, AND I HAD MY HANDS ON METAL ALL THE TIME. IT GAVE ME A SENSE OF CONNECTION TO THE MATERIAL.”

M

y motivation is the passion to create,” explains metalworker and furniture maker Mike Danielson. “Metal was the first medium that I was introduced to. I fell in love with it and was always thinking about new ways to work with it.” Danielson first became enamored with the material in Washington, where he worked as a journeyman welder and fitter at the shipyards alongside his father, a lifelong shipwright. “I grew up in the trades, and I had my hands on metal all the time,” he says. “It gave me a sense of connection to the material and honed my skills.” While his coworkers read hunting and fishing magazines in the lunchroom, the budding designer paged through the glossy, colorful pages of interior design magazines. “They are some of the most talented tradespeople and craftsmen around, and I learned so much from them,” says Danielson, “but I think it was pretty evident that my mind was in other places.” Indeed, Danielson moved to Seattle and made the switch to architectural metalwork. But after years of fabricating the designs of others—and relocating to the Bay Area—Danielson answered his own call to design with his first line of sculptural furnishings. Fabricated from his Bayview studio, the tables and mirrors in Danielson’s collection—sold through

HewnX in San Francisco—feature monolithic forms that are crafted from salvaged metal. Two of his designs utilize a unique pitted metal reclaimed from a decommissioned pier in Seattle. “The accelerated oxidation near saltwater creates the pitting,” he explains. “It’s looked upon as a waste product, but I saw the working hand of nature in it.” To highlight the textures of the various metals, Danielson keeps his forms restrained. “The materials I’m working with now have very detailed, organic surfaces,” he says. “I don’t want to take away from that by overdesigning.” Danielson is also busy conjuring up new light fixtures that are inspired by the success of his first pendant, the Basilica chandelier, which has a metallic bronze finish and an elegant shape reminiscent of Gothic architecture. “It’s rewarding to take an idea all the way from conception to a finished piece,” he says, adding, “I have a chance to create every day, I can’t think of anything more exciting.”

I

t’s a story of craft and artisans and a sense of beauty,” says architectural designer Gustave Carlson about a singular Berkeley project that, over a good six years’ time, was transformed from a simple 2,000-squarefoot shingle-and-sheetrock house from the 1990s into a lush 4,500-square-foot oasis. “I had 54 consultants, so to speak, working through this firm. I would come up with an inspirational design idea, fine-tune it just enough on paper, and then talk with the artisans and craftspeople and say, ‘What if we built it like this?’ It was a really beautiful way to work.” The property on which the house was set is tucked into a narrow, heavily forested canyon and drops dramatically from the street down to a protected creek. After living in the existing house for 20 years, the owners decided it was time to regroup, yet they couldn’t bring themselves to leave

the site. “It was the consensus of our family to stay on this beloved property,” says the wife, explaining, “Our kids were about to launch, but we were thinking about expanding rather than contracting. We felt we needed space for them to come home with their partners and families, as well as room for our aging parents to come live someday.” After they connected with Carlson, a 2 1/2-year permitting process ensued. “It was significant because of an ordinance protecting the creek and setbacks from the street,” says Carlson. “We figured out how to expand the building on the site to get the square feet we wanted. We were patient and persevered.” Stylistically, there were what Carlson refers to as “memory themes” to consider. “We wanted to save what the home represented to the owners and not veer away from some of the intentions of the original architecture, which was low and unassuming from the

street but taller from the canyon side,” he says. “Designing something that looked good from so many different angles was a big challenge.” Carlson met that challenge by wrapping the exterior with Western red cedar shingles that were in keeping with the neighborhood context. On the inside, he reorganized the floor plan to create a new wing that houses a master suite and family room, a lower level for guests, and more of an overall engagement with the woodland setting. “Now you can experience an even larger feeling of indoor-outdoor living,” says Carlson, who designed an airy open space on the top level to house the living and dining areas. A walnut ceiling crowns the room, which opens through accordionfolding doors to an expansive deck. In creating the master suite and new guest quarters, builder Dan Wolf was tasked with digging out under the house to add a new foundation and extend the lower two

floors into the hillside. “We held up the existing structure with temporary steel beams and large shoring towers,” he explains. “After we were done with the structural work, we had to crane equipment, including a Bobcat, out of the site. It took a lot of coordination to make it all happen.” Carlson, who handled the interior finishes and material selections, called upon Santa Monica, California-based designer Carolyn M. Lawrence to lend her expertise and resourcefulness when choosing furnishings that would be both modern and flexible. The two also worked together to bring in layers of interest with thoughtful handcrafted elements. A decorative frieze is carved into the plaster walls of the living area, while striking entry doors were handmade by artisans in Bali. Carved sliding doors and screens were also implemented throughout the home in a nod to the husband’s Indian heritage, which also helped inspire the interior design. “The couple have a very

deep connection with Indian and Eastern aesthetics,” says Lawrence, who was informed by that sensibility in selecting artwork, rugs and accessories throughout. Much of the furniture was designed to have multiple functions. In the living area, for instance, Lawrence customized sofas to fit how the owners intended to use the space and paired them with a trio of tables outfitted with trays on top and drawers for storage. A muted rug grounds the area, which Lawrence kept to a “pale and serene” palette. Carlson, who selected the lighting throughout the home, chose streamlined pendants to hang in the living area and in the adjacent dining area, where slipcovered chairs surround a bleached white-oak table. Nearby, a tall white cabinet “is completely fitted with mirrors and shelves for glassware, while the lower portion is made of Makassar ebony and has doors concealing pullouts to hold serving pieces,” says Lawrence. Outside, Seattle- and Hawaii-based landscape designer Hendrikus Schraven gave the grounds an equally

thoughtful makeover. Along with his team—including his brother, Natyam—Schraven craned huge boulders onto the site, integrated custom-blended living soils into the ground, and installed LED lighting and piping for irrigation. “The steep canyon and narrow creek setting created the opportunity for a multilevel experience, both visually and physically,” says Schraven. “It allowed for creative natural pathways and was perfectly suited for using massive retaining boulders that add character to the landscape.” He also designed peaceful coves that are carved into the hillsides and appointed with handmade benches. “There is a lot of rumble in life, and people often need to escape that into nature,” he adds. Just over two years after construction began, the owners moved in and are enjoying their reimagined home. “It’s a quiet sanctuary,” says the wife. “Our home is only as good as the relationships it houses, and now it supports the evolving nature and needs of our growing family. More people can now flow comfortably through our home.”

Opposite: In the master bathroom, the sculptural tub was fabricated by Concreteworks and placed beneath a window by Loewen. The sconces are by McEwen Lighting Studio, and a wooden window detail echoes the screens in the master bedroom. Below: The master bedroom keeps to the house’s calm palette. A woven Indian textile was placed above a custom bed, where a ceiling fixture by McEwen Lighting Studio hangs above. The pendant nearby is by Jonathan Browning Studios. Custom screens carved in Mexico add a layer of interest.

A Symphony in Ste

BAYWESTBUILDERS.COM 1500 TACOMA WAY, REDWOOD CITY, CA 94063 (650) 216-9600

As Derek Gray tells it, “Building a luxury home is a bit like conducting a symphony. Both are complex undertakings, but when a builder has an eye for detail, an ear well-tuned to a client’s desires, and the ability to inspire everyone involved, the results can be memorable.” Gray should know of what he speaks. For 22 years, the head of Bay West Builders has chosen to construct only a handful of fine homes each season, for discerning clientele who appreciate thoughtful design and impeccable craftsmanship. “Given the rapid increase of available materials and sophisticated and technical whole-house systems, building a house has become ever more complex. Properly managed, that complexity should never burden our clients or sour the experience. We should make it all seem simple.” To that end, Bay West identifies client decisions well in advance, and incorporates them into a comprehensive building schedule, giving the clients plenty of lead time to really think things through. Streamlining decision timelines simplifies the process, reduces stress and builds trust. Trust also brings out the best from other professionals on the project team. “It’s not just which people you work with, it’s how you treat them.” In addition to comprehensive knowledge and experience in the field, a builder must be skilled at orchestrating people. “Trust works both ways. If a designer knows you’ll respond quickly and capably, questions rarely become problems. You get into a rhythm of anticipating each other’s needs.”

SHERRI CORKER SHERRI’S CHAMPAGNE Post Office Box 851 Kentfield, California sherri@sherrischampagne.com sherrischampagne.com

While the notion of small production and handcrafted wine has long been synonymous with the California industry, French Champagne imports have been limited to a few mass-produced brands. By contrast, grower-producer Champagne is the truest expression of the small vineyards and families that produce it, comprising less than 5 percent of the total Champagne imported. Sherri Corker, founder of Sherri’s Champagne, developed a palate for the distinctive bubbly in college. She smiles affectionately while remembering her father’s words, “You have always had a Champagne taste!” Corker’s business delivers to its clients six unique bottles twice per year. In her previous career as an architect, Corker was driven to create distinctive, quality projects that echo the context of their environment. Similarly, grower-producer Champagne shares the beauty of its origin, an ageless testament to the unique French terroir.

1

Grower-producer will forever change the way one views Champagne.

How do you think your clients would characterize you? Sophisticated, intelligent, enchanting, creative and driven. What is one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? I grew up a tomboy in South Georgia and, still longing for the outdoors, developed an affinity for fly-fishing… tight lines! Who or what inspires you most? Women who overcome adversity to accomplish the impossible! I serve on The Buck Institute’s Buck Advisory Council and have volunteered for the past four years to witness brilliant women working in the science and research on aging. A portion of my profits goes to the Double X program to benefit women and girls in STEM education. Who has most influenced your work? My 12-year-old daughter influences me to lead as fearlessly as I can, no matter the profession. I have to set the bar high, so she sees that anything she strives for can become her reality.

2

What is your most prized possession? Our three dogs: two hilarious dachshunds and a feisty Chihuahua! What are your favorite hobbies? Hiking, fly-fishing, travel, observing the arts, learning and shoe design, my next profession.

3 1. Isabella, Basil and Miette, as photographed by my 12-year-old daughter, Jourdan. 2. Brunello Cucinelli Monili mink fur t-strap sandal in graphite. 3. Sage fly rod and reel, my favorite fast rod!

FLORENCE BROADHURST AT HENDERSON

Luxe Interiors + Design and Selamat Designs recently celebrated Australian-based Florence Broadhurst’s newly launched collection at Henderson’s San Francisco showroom. Guests mingled with colleagues and friends while enjoying signature cocktails and light bites in the colorful and inspiring design studio that owner Eric Henderson and his team, along with Selamat Designs, created. We thank them all for the fabulous event.

MICHAEL TAYLOR DESIGNS

In February, Michael Taylor Designs hosted an event with Luxe Interiors + Design in honor of its new line of outdoor furniture, designed by the talented Suzanne Tucker. The night was full of great spirits, top local design talent, amazing Sherri’s Champagne—served by founder Sherri Corker—and fabulous wine provided by Beyond the Bottles’ Matt Walrath, as well as incredible appetizers from Skool. Thank you to Lee Pierce for opening up the gorgeous Michael Taylor Designs showroom for all of us to enjoy!

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
