THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

Held at Studio Coupar, the standingroom-only panel of three remarkable women shared both their art and stories. We also collaborated with one of our fantastic advertising partners, De Sousa Hughes, for an inspiring presentation by renowned textile designer Lori Weitzner and a personal look at her new book, Ode to Color: The Ten Essential Palettes for Living and Design, followed by a book signing with incredible desserts and champagne. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

WHO: Soft-sculpture artist Liz Robb, who creates tactile pieces using materials such as cotton, jute and indigo from her Bay Area studio. WHAT: Followers will see a mixture of in-process pieces and finished in-gallery works. Robb’s images of threads, weavings and paintings emphasize color and texture, such as the natural fibers of wool or reed. Her sculptures can be compact and highly detailed, whereas others can be unraveled and cascading onto the floor. WHY: The artist encourages her followers to view artwork from varying perspectives. She fastens her pieces to the wall or ceiling, allowing for multiple vantage points and structural planes. IN HER WORDS: “My artwork centers around the dialogue between the grid and its manifestations as form, content and medium. CHECK IN TILDEN HOTEL

A new corkscrew-like structure will rise 400 feet tall in the heart of San Francisco, just blocks from the Bay Bridge, Embarcadero and Rincon Park. Designed by Studio Gang Architects, Folsom Bay Tower will incorporate the city’s classic bay windows—with a twist. The glass panels will rotate over the height of the tower, offering ample views and natural light while creating a compelling artistic façade. At ground level, the building will have retail space along Folsom and Main streets as well as 150 bicycle parking spots, and the rooftop will feature 3,100 square feet of amenity space. The 393-unit building is expected to be complete in early 2019. studiogang.com Adding to a fresh wave of creativity in the spirited Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco is the Tilden Hotel on Taylor Street. Design firm Studio Tack reimagined the building from top to bottom with a lean toward minimalist modern featuring organic textures, clean lines and airy well-lit spaces. When did you open? We opened our doors at 15th and Noe streets in November 2013. What attracted you to the location? It was a corner spot with 20-foot-high ceilings on one of the most charming streets in San Francisco. Describe the concept for the space. When I signed the lease, it was in the process of becoming a restaurant, so the renovation took nearly five months. We put in new flooring, painted, added track lighting and created a custom built-in cabinet. On the floor: We focus on designs from the 20th century—hand-picked items that make a house a home. You’ll find luxe chandeliers and lacquered side tables next to a George Nakashima nightstand. Where do you source? I search from Palm Springs to New Jersey and just about everywhere in between. My style is eclectic—I love mixing eras to create contrast.

FOR-SITE FOUNDATION “I’m most intrigued by an exhibit when it brings my attention to specific aspects of place. In response to that interest, I started the non-profit For-Site Foundation, which is dedicated to the creation, understanding and presentation of art about place. For-Site is unique in that we achieve our work through partnerships with organizations such as the National Park Service. Our exhibits address the social and natural history of the location where we’re working. We engage artists who can address the backgrounds of these places while prompting the public to ask their own questions, too.” –CHERYL HAINES, FOR-SITE.ORG

If Alice Tacheny is inspired by things falling apart, the sculptural and functional furniture she creates in her Northern California studio evokes just the opposite. The designer, whose career has been cemented in woodworking, recently expanded her portfolio to include such materials as concrete, leather, copper and brass, seen in multiple new hardware collections released last year with more in the works. “The dominant theme has been a focus on simple forms articulated through different materials in unexpected ways,” she says. The Midwesternerturned-Bay-Area resident shares her perspective on all things design in the region. alicetacheny.com What’s exciting you in the area right now? The way Oakland is changing is encouraging in terms of the food, music and art scenes. It’s diverse, both culturally and economically, and feels genuine. Being a Midwesterner, I find it more relatable. Go-to shops? Temescal Alley is one of my favorite places to visit in Oakland. Esqueleto is probably one of the best curated shops in the Bay Area. Marin has a little catching up to do with San Francisco and Oakland (sorry Marin!) but there are still some great places popping up. I like the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur. There, you can check out Erica Tanov, Farmshop and Diesel bookstore, among others. Favorite places to explore? I have a soft spot for crumbling buildings—I tend to be most inspired by things that are falling apart. I love Jack London State Historic Park and roaming through the ruins of the Wolf House—London’s dream mansion, which was under construction but abandoned after a fire started. Another interesting building is the Marin County Civic Center designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It mixes institutional functionality and high-minded modernism.

DATE BOOK After opening her eponymous boutique four years ago in the Pacific Heights neighborhood, it didn’t take long for Jessie Black to amass an extensive list of clients requesting her interior design services. “People were asking me to recreate similar surrounds in their own homes,” she says. Black’s decorating style emphasizes timeless luxury showcased through a serene and understated palette of neutral hues, natural materials and layered textures. “Wood, white and sunlight are my favorite design ingredients,” she says. When the designer is not cultivating her next project or expanding her business (she recently added custom furniture design), she’s busy discovering local artisan brands and craftsmen, such as Gerhard Ceramics, Fells/Andes and Carolynn Haydu, to introduce in her boutique. It’s the absolute best part of my day. Occasionally, I’ll head to SoulCycle or Yoga Tree beforehand. Exercise helps me clear my mind so I can calmly tackle anything that comes my way. 9 a.m. We have so many cute cafés in San Francisco, so I like to have my morning meetings in coffee shops. I adore As Quoted, especially since it’s just up the road from my boutique. The banana muffins are the best! Rose’s Café or Le Marais Bakery (for a croissant) are also my favorites. 11 a.m. If I am sourcing accessories for a client, I love nothing more than staying local. I always start on Sacramento Street and then expand my search from there. This street has really evolved over the past few years. Sue Fisher King, Anyon and The Future Perfect are a few of my top places to shop for projects. I also love Hudson Grace for

New boutique Found by Maja always has such unique treasures, while Poetica Art & Antiques carries an array of vintage finds. 1 p.m. I’m currently working on an exciting design project in The Pacific building, so I often stroll Fillmore Street for a quick lunch. Each time I plan to try some place new but Jane is my usual haunt. 3 p.m. After checking in at the boutique, I’ll head to the San Francisco Design Center. McGuire is one of my favorite showrooms. It’s fresh, earthy and modern. I really like De Sousa Hughes, too. I also always try to pop by Coup D’Etat if I am on the hunt for a bold statement piece. 7 p.m. After work, I’ll meet up with girlfriends or I’ll end the day with a casual dinner with my husband. I love cozy home-cooked dinners but with so many great restaurants, we are more often compelled to head out. My favorite is a casual pasta or pizza at Fiorella. We also love 1760, Cala or Nico.

The company’s new line, Synchronicity, puts the spotlight on their sculptural, hand-forged metal with the added elegance of Swarovski crystals. “We were looking for something with a bolder voice,” design director David Kitts says. “To design a fixture with real star power, a la Audrey Hepburn.” With carefully crafted precision and purposeful placement, Hubbardton Forge’s in-house designers cradle the crystals within each fixture, like a fine jewel. In some cases, the crystals take center stage, in others, they’re treated as an accent. “We’re striving for a 50-50 role with crystal and forged elements in a very organic way,” Kitts continues. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. A unity of craft and glamour, the Courbé Duet features the world premiere of the new Wave Cut crystal from Swarovski embraced by flowing steel tendrils. BOTTOM. Most recently, I found vintage vinyl floor cloths in great color combinations, which I love to use in casual dining spaces, at Spicher and Company. Blush and pink tones, often paired with gold metals and ginkgo motifs in lighting, accessories and furniture, were everywhere. Organic forms inspired by nature were quite popular too. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

Thoughtfully picked from their existing indoor line, Criss Cross—a simple doodle reinvented into a perfect coordinate—and Mr. Rowe—a masculine design with a twist that was inspired by a dear friend—are the festive outdoor accents you didn’t know you needed.

At first sight: Alex Mason’s designs are as thoughtful and elegant as they are fresh and playful. Compared to previous collections, however, these patterns are a little more graphic and handsome, inspired by strong geometry over a more whimsical, natural form. As a landscape designer… These accent pillows appeal to me not only for their ability to complement a wide variety of garden styles—traditional, Zen or modern—but they’d also pair well with other patterns, textures and colors. Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. I’m wholly attracted to… Gardens that combine structured, architectural form with native, seasonal and wild plantings: I’m moved by landscapes that elevate one’s understanding of the natural process.

Urquiola’s Relax armchair, part of her Maia collection for the international brand, is infused with modernity and lightness and breaks new ground on archtypical outdoor furnishings through the use of geometric patterns, high-tech braided fibers and a wide aluminum frame. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

At first sight… Our initial impression of the Maia Relax armchair is one of weightlessness. The chair’s lightness lends a breezy informality that works to balance its sculptural and prismatic form. With a minimal and functional spirit… The chair nevertheless appears comfortable—and almost playful. Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

TIGHT ROPE THE PIECE: Custom Plain Weave Shore Rug THE DESIGNER: Louie Rigano and Gil Muller FIND IT: shorerugs.com THE INSPIRATION: London design duo Louie Rigano and Gil Muller consider it their mission to create inspired designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Old and new: Shore Rugs’ use of technologically advanced materials in a way that harks back to the long tradition of handwork is admirable. The actual material also communicates an ease of maintenance, which is key for the outdoors. Landscape architecture… Weaves all my interests—science, art, horticulture, craft, design, technology, history and the outdoors—into a cohesive whole, coincidentally not unlike one of these rugs.

At first sight: It’s immediately clear how well-crafted these tables are, and beyond that, they read as extremely chic. Dedon’s lines are always visionary and unique, and the same is true of Lorenza Bozzoli’s work. It’s contemporary and very personal; she doesn’t let functionality sacrifice style. Speaking of functionality… This design is just the right height and you can play with configurations. I also love that the tops are natural trays and have drainage slots—versatile and perfect for all things poolside. Mother Nature and the magic of the outdoors… Drew me to landscape design. The natural world has constant change and life cycles. This made sense to me as a child. Of course, once I was deeply engaged, I wanted to play with all the plants and forms and remake reality. Why not a mountain or a lake where there was none? Visually and viscerally… The tables have a lovely lightness to them, and the fact they have three legs reminds me of Noguchi. The art of craft and the love for craft are what this design is all about.

SEA LEVEL THE PIECE: Brixx Side Table Triangular THE DESIGNER: Lorenza Bozzoli FIND IT: dedon.us THE INSPIRATION: As with all things Dedon and all things Lorenza Bozzoli, the Brixx side table, with its sleek powdercoated aluminum top and natural teak legs, elevates the everyday. The Milanese fashion and furniture expert’s marriage with Dedon, and their fine Italian craftsmanship, is nothing short of a refined and understated match made in heaven—resulting in the Brixx table and its collection’s stunning counterparts.

DROP ANCHOR THE PIECE: Windsor Casual Chair THE DESIGNER: Weatherend Estate Furniture FIND IT: weatherend.com THE INSPIRATION: Over a century ago, landscape architect Hans Heistad began designing outdoor landscapes with complementing furniture for seaside properties along the coast of Maine. Among these dreamy coastal estates was Weatherend, and over a hundred years later, Weatherend Estate Furniture continues to produce stately and sophisticated pieces. Using techniques typically found in yacht building, the heritage brand reimagined the Windsor—a contemporary interpretation of the first outdoor chair introduced to America—which celebrates the seating staple’s rich history and ageless design.

At first sight: I admire the subtle maritime aesthetic that Weatherend often applies to their works. There is something that feels particularly “right” about this design and its exceptional craftsmanship. As a landscape architect… I am especially drawn to the style and flexibility of a design. If you’re going to bring something into your home, indoors or out, these two qualities are paramount. On the job: I greatly enjoy collaborating with designers and architects to create beautiful and environmentally appropriate spaces, ones that harmoniously marry the site and the client, and I feel like this chair would be an easy fit for so many atmospheres. At home: The joinery and overall mood of this piece make the Windsor Casual chair the perfect solution for any space craving an elegant yet rugged piece of furniture. To me, it would seem most at home on a deck overlooking the ocean or atop a posh sailboat or yacht.

Here, interior designer Victoria Judge of Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Smart Design Studio walks us through this airy minimalist kitchen. smartdesignstudio.com Share your vision. Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

To transform a Tuscan-style villa into a modern country home, architect Ken Linsteadt relied on an earthy, natural palette and opened up every room to the surrounding Sonoma, California, landscape. While the bateau-style soaking tub and lively patterned floor command attention in this striking bath in Cape Town, South Africa, the real draw is the scene just outside the French doors. That’s why designer Kim Stephen kept the palette simple.

One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. he sublimely understated home that architect Jess Field and designer Erin Martin recently composed in Napa Valley appears like a piece of thread—one made of wood, metal, glass and plaster—that’s woven into the landscape, joining vineyard terrain to the north and a forested setting to the south. “My starting point is always to figure out how I can attune a building to the land with as much subtlety and nuance as possible,” says Field, who worked with his father and firm cofounder, Stan Field, on the initial siting of the project. In this case, his effort yielded a string of three simple rectangular forms that display contemporary and agrarian aesthetics and appear as if they’ve grown up out of the intersection between two distinct topographies. As Martin explains, this residence is not another modern farmhouse. “It’s something that couldn’t be found just anywhere,” the designer says. “When you’re standing out there between the vineyards and the trees and you’re surrounded by that much beauty, you realize you don’t need much more than what’s there naturally.”

When Field and Martin’s clients—a husband who works in finance and a wife who focused on raising the couple’s now-grown six children—decided to build a second home in Napa Valley, it was because they wanted a different living experience than the one they currently have in the suburban Midwest; they wanted something that would let them be closer to nature. “I grew up in an agrarian environment, and I love the outdoors,” the husband says. “We also love wine,” the wife adds. “Developing a small vineyard is something we’ve always wanted to do.” The couple searched and found a property that sits almost 1,700 feet above the valley on Howell Mountain. Before they built their house, they planted their vineyard with cabernet sauvignon grapes and named it Sentinel Ridge, a tribute to a natural crest that marks their lot. “Very special to the site is this long and narrow plateau that overlooks the valley,” Field says. “We found subterranean rock along the brow of the shelf, and we put the house along that brow.”

In the same way the residence seems to thread the landscape, a continuous breezeway threads the buildings. “There’s a timber-and-steel colonnade that runs from the outside to the inside and is a circulation spine that ties the structures together,” Field says. The first and most western building holds the kitchen, the living area and the master suite; the center building houses the main dining room and the wine cellar; while the last and most eastern building features three guest suites. All three structures are clad with reclaimed Douglas fir marked by rich brown and silver tones. “We found boards from an 80-year-old barn in northern Idaho,” says Field, who also employed gabled roofs made of standing seam metal and plaster walls with a parchment paper-like finish that bookend each of the

buildings. “The wood and metal aren’t necessarily refined materials, but there was such attention to detail in the way we had the materials come together that the result is something extraordinary,” says builder Paul Niles, who managed construction for the project. When it came to the interiors, Martin, too, was inspired by Napa Valley’s epic landscape. “I usually keep things really simple and do all white, but I wanted to use green here because it’s so green outside,” she says. “Bringing that color in was just another way of working off what exists there in nature.” The designer, who collaborated with project manager Maria Torres, outfitted the open-plan living area with large hunter-green pendants—customized from vintage steel ocean buoys—and covered the custom

sofa with a dark blue-green cotton-linen fabric. “It will hide a ton of red wine stains,” she says. For Martin, keeping the focus on the landscape also meant using spare furnishings. In the dining room, she arranged only three elements: a custom table, steel-and-leather chairs and more pendants made from buoys. “The table is built on a train carriage,” Martin says. “There are actual train tracks cast into the concrete floor so it can roll over to the side and act as a serving or tasting table, or it can stay in the center and be used for dining.” Indeed, the home connects strongly to the outdoors, and relates to the area’s architectural vernacular, which includes historic farm buildings. “But it was also important that the residence be detailed in a very clean, crisp way that shows restraint and timelessness,” Field says. Sharp detailing also informed the landscape design that husband-andwife duo Dave and Nancy Roche created for the home’s surroundings. “There are native boulders, gravel paths and a rustic wood bench along one side of the large central terrace,” Dave Roche says. “In the front, or on the vineyard side,” Nancy Roche adds, “we planted native coffee berry, Lindheimer’s muhly and three varieties of manzanita that connect the buildings to the dark green forest.” That strong connection to the land, established by the combined efforts of the entire team, delivered exactly what the clients had hoped for: “When we’re at home in Napa Valley, we don’t feel like we’re inside a structure,” the husband says. “We feel more like we’re part of nature.”

rom the moment designer Jeff Schlarb arrived on the site of his clients’ wine country home— set against a verdant hillside that unfolds into sweeping vistas—his wheels started turning with ideas for patterns and materials that would complement the organic setting. The home was under construction, but it’s modern yet rustic aesthetic had been firmly established, and the designer aimed to underscore that feeling with a sense of refinement for the interiors. “It was important, however, to avoid anything fussy, and I didn’t want to pick things that were expected,” he says. “The clients wanted their home to be comfortable and to agree with their casual lifestyle in Sonoma.” And although it was important for the design to have an air of ease, getting there would be a demanding process. “It takes many layers of work to make something look effortless,” Schlarb says. That thoughtful and rigorous approach was shared by the entire design team in bringing together a singular home for their clients: a British couple with three grown daughters. The house had been started on a 16-acre parcel about 1,000 feet above the town of Sonoma, where the behindthe-scenes planning began as soon as architect Michael Guthrie stepped on the property. “During my first visit I always leave with components from the site, like a rock or some dried-out leaves,” he says of his hands-on approach to culling inspiration. “It’s especially important

in a semi-remote locale such as this one where there are no contextual influences like there would be in town, so the landscape provides the inspiration.” With the seeds planted for the home’s materiality, Guthrie, who designed the house in tandem with project manager Ha Nguyen, looked to the area’s farmhouse vernacular to provide further influence. Inspired by the simple forms of those utilitarian buildings, the duo designed a long U-shape structure anchored by an open central space that holds the kitchen, living and dining areas. To crown the house, they introduced a metal roof, typical of agricultural buildings, in a crisp prefinished dark bronze to complement the cedar siding, which was stained to look slightly aged. “The owners wanted something that related to the wine country, so we included simple gables for a rustic modern look,” Guthrie says. The structure was also outfitted with metal-frame windows and a bifold door that runs one whole length of the house, opening it up completely to the outdoors. Playing off the façade’s dissolving boundary, the architectural duo rooted the opposite side of the structure with a wall made of local stone, which was selected to resemble those early rocks found on-site. The process of finding the precise type of look they envisioned for the wall took some time. “Michael had the masons put up sample after sample until he found one that was exactly right,” builder Jon Reiter says.

Surrounding the structure, Guthrie and Nguyen established a framework for an auto court, swimming pool and a series of outdoor rooms before handing the baton to the husband-and-wife landscape team of Dave and Nancy Roche. “The site was covered with beautiful rock outcroppings that we were eager to preserve and highlight,” Nancy Roche says. “We stockpiled boulders during construction and placed them in many locations, including outside the master bedroom. We also created a gravel terrace there with succulents embedded at the base of the rocks that highlight the native ones.” The property’s existing trees were thoughtfully integrated and augmented as well. “We kept and worked around native oaks and manzanitas,” Dave Roche says, “and we introduced the two mature olive trees that frame the pool.” As the structure was taking shape, the owners initiated the search for a designer. “While we were building, we were also searching for a flat and happened on a place in Nob Hill designed by Jeff,” the wife says. “We really liked his style of blending old and new.” Schlarb kept that contemporary-classic approach as he appointed the main public areas. To help define the living area within the open space, the designer chose a textured wool rug as an anchor and paired it with a creamy-hued upholstered sofa and matching armchairs. But he didn’t hesitate to switch things up by adding a timeless leather wingback chair, which he customized by covering the seat cushion with a striped fabric. “It’s a cool version of that classic style of chair,” says the designer, who finished the area with another armchair and a modern stacked-oak coffee table. He kept his selfdescribed “rock ‘n’ roll approach” in the adjacent dining area with a table that is equal parts function and art. The distinctive piece features bog oak in a color gradation that goes from orange to walnut-brown to ebony and back again. table, for example, required endless hours of planning to thread the various components around and through the metal ceiling rods to get their position precisely right. And determining the perfect materials for the living area fireplace was also carefully thought through. “We wanted it to be industrial but not loft-style industrial,” explains Schlarb, who finally settled on a black steel monolith accented with just enough marble to make it luxurious and current. On the opposite side of the room, he offset the kitchen’s walnut cabinetry with an ultra-thin Neolith waterfall island with a mitered edge. For color, the wife requested “neutral shades that were sympathetic to the environment,” recalls Schlarb, so he selected items like the soft cream-and-brown tweed-like outdoor fabric for the dining area chairs and a muted wooland-bamboo-silk rug for the master bedroom to complement the stone outcroppings beyond. “Jeff’s use of textiles and colors pulled everything together,” the wife says. “And thanks to our team, the entire house feels anchored to the landscape with a continuous flow to the outdoors.”

ven by California standards, the surfing town of Santa Cruz is recognized for its laid-back feel, thanks in part to its location along the Pacific Ocean within a landscape dotted with towering redwoods. With its cathedral-like forests and nearby mountains, the inspiring locale is a fitting setting for custom furniture maker Gabriel Statsky, known for coaxing wood—either reclaimed white oak, FSC-certified American hardwoods or locally sourced species—into heirloom-quality pieces. “I feel an obligation to the tree, to the material,” says Statsky, who recently completed one of his favorite pieces to date—a massive dining table made of a thick slab of wood from a centuriesold Goliath that fell in Big Sur. “It’s important for me to know that I did the best I could with it.” Although he earned an industrial technology degree and minored in three-dimensional art at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Statsky mostly taught himself his craft by apprenticing in shops throughout the West, reading piles of books and enduring plenty of trial and error along the way. “There could have been easier ways to learn, but it was a really valuable experience for me to figure it out in a vacuum,” says the craftsman, who started his business 19 years ago. “It was a slow and laborious process, but I have a lot of confidence now. There isn’t much that I can’t make.” Figuring out how to craft one of his intricate pieces—a trio of tables that connect to form a 24-foot-long dining table with handmade wheels, for example, or a pair of sofas that link up to create a bed—is deeply satisfying for Statsky. “My clients often want more than one function for a piece, such as storage and mobility,” he explains. “I love solving those challenges.” Equally satisfying but in a different way is woodworking’s sheer physicality. For his more sculptural pieces, Statsky will employ an electric grinder to rough out the basic form before shaping the finer details with chisels and traditional carving knives. “I’m kind of a perfectionist,” he says, noting the traditional joinery and custom-formulated stains. “It’s because I have so much respect for the materials.” Although he brings on employees as needed to help with the commissions that keep rolling in, Statsky maintains a very hands-on approach, doing as much of the work as he can himself. Some days that means losing track of time while performing a simple, repetitive task, and other times he’ll put pen to paper to work out a new design. Always eager for the next challenge, Statsky has started kicking around ideas for an entire line of furnishings. “I’m closing in on 20 years, and there’s something about this time that I’m embracing,” he says. “I want to learn as much as I can and build as many cool things as possible.”

s they ascended a forested hillside and then entered the driveway of a prospective home in Portola Valley, an active couple—cyclists and nature lovers—were transfixed by the magical scenery. “You could see the expansive western vistas,” says one half of the pair, “and my wife said, ‘I don’t care what’s here. I just need to see these views.’ So we were sold before we even really saw the house.” As it turns out, the home also had its charms, with its midcentury modern style and relatively open layout, but it didn’t take advantage of the views afforded by its hillside perch and sported mismatched renovations from previous owners. After living in the residence for a few years, the couple decided to make some changes. Preferring to renovate the house rather than raze it and start from scratch, they turned to architect Malcolm Davis to visually tie it together and create a functional abode that would

match their lifestyle. “If I can alter a home and still make it work, it’s like retelling a story,” Davis says. “It’s informed by other voices and periods, making it a richer experience.” Davis started by reworking the floor plan and opening up the house to the outdoors. “When you walked in, there was a clutter of decks blocking your view from the entry,” he says. “There were two dining spaces next to each other and smaller windows that looked out to the biggest view.” Davis addressed all those issues and more, starting on the upper main level of the house, where he removed posts from the open kitchen, living and dining areas to create a better physical and visual flow. He then expanded the existing kitchen along the home’s west side, positioning a large island in place of one of the previous dining areas. He added a length of cabinets beneath a row of windows and flanked the stove with pocket doors that access a large pantry. Near the open kitchen in the dining area, the

architect swapped corner walls for retractable glass doors and designed a cantilevered balcony that wraps three sides of the room. “The dining room is like a glass porch that acts as both the indoor and outdoor dining space,” Davis says. “It can be shuttered, screened or completely open.” A pitched ceiling with exposed beams and metal trusses crowns the dining area and connecting living area for a cohesive and airy feel. The updates continued downstairs, where Davis dropped the floor and combined what were the master bedroom and a den into one spacious family room. The ceiling now rises to more than 10 feet, and windows on three sides flood the space with light. “Even though you’re on a lower floor, you’re getting as much light as possible,” the homeowner says. As the master bedroom was repurposed, the couple— who were then soon-to-be moms—wanted to relocate the master next to the two existing bedrooms, one of which would become their daughter’s room, so they’d all be on one level. “My wife had the idea to move the master suite up to the other side of the house, and Malcolm ran with

it and made it even better,” the homeowner says. The architect added a new wing on the east side, adjacent to the existing bedrooms, and capped the room with a shed roof. “Kicking that roofline up gives you a view up to the sky and a feeling of openness,” Davis explains. The couple’s visitors, too, got upgraded arrangements. Davis expanded the detached one-room guesthouse by adding a sitting room, dubbed the lanai, on the ground level. He then designed an artist’s studio on the top floor, which is connected by a bridge to the main house. “The bridge plays up the idea of this art studio being removed and special,” says the architect, who also added a large deck off the guesthouse to incorporate several native live oaks. “We worked around the existing site and the oak trees,” says the project’s builder, Steve Nicholls. Landscape designer Randy McDannell, who was working through his firm, RS McDannell Exterior & Landscape, at the time of the project, was also respectful of the existing grounds and worked with plants native to the county. “The goal was to replant the garden areas as naturally as possible,” he says.

While Davis clad the exterior of the main house with stucco and cedar burned in a shou sugi ban technique, he sheathed the guesthouse’s simple form with Cor-Ten corrugated steel. Inside the buildings, warm oak and Masonite floors, along with white walls, create a clean look. The couple’s designer, Lori Yeomans, chose furnishings within a muted palette to complement the restrained aesthetic. “We didn’t want the interiors to overwhelm the views,” Yeomans says. Given the homeowners’ appreciation of midcentury modern style, the designer selected pieces such as a 1950s tête-à-tête sofa in the living area. “It’s a two-sided piece, so you can sit on one side and speak to somebody in the living area, or sit on the other side and look at that beautiful vista,” says the designer, who paired the piece with Warren Platner side chairs. A Gaetano Sciolari light fixture and vintage chairs carry the aesthetic into the adjacent dining area. “We didn’t overload the house with furniture,” she says. “We wanted every piece to stand alone. It’s very calming.” That calmness infiltrates every aspect of the home. “They’re unpretentious people, and they wanted a subtlety of materials,” Davis says of the owners. “They wanted something quiet that blended with the landscape, like the local barns and sheds. This design was about opening the house up to nature, so you’re just looking out at this big valley and a sea of trees.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 263

Founded by Los Angeles-based design duo Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design, SIA Projects champions the fight to preserve significant architecture as art and aims to protect, preserve, educate and celebrate architectural integrity and cultural heritage. On February 19th, over 150 design and style influencers descended upon the architecturally significant Hotel Lautner, designed by midcentury pioneer John Lautner, to celebrate SIA’s mission to preserve iconic architecture and design. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Liquid Catering and creative cocktails by buzzbox. Coyote and iBBQ prepared and served specialty meats and grilled vegetables from their exquisite grills, and Jenn-Air kept the party buzzing with espresso samples from its state-of-the-art kitchen. Nourison, York Wallcoverings and Jenn-Air provided silent auction items benefiting SIA Projects, and support for the organization was also extended by Snyder Diamond, Robert Allen, S. Harris, Theodore Alexander, Diane James and the gracious hosts at Hotel Lautner.

Luxe Interiors + Design celebrated its 5th annual signature Gold List celebration at the stunning Holly Hunt showroom in Miami’s Design District. This year’s Gold List celebrated nearly 600 trade professionals from across the country, including interior designers, architects, home builders and landscape architects whose projects were featured in the pages of the magazine.
