POGGENPOHL ANNUAL INNOVATION DESIGN CONTEST Innovation Award Winner Hausscape, Miami, FL Luis Bebchik and Reinier Boulart, Hausscape
After a review of exceptional submissions, Poggenpohl is proud to announce the winners in the following categories:
Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA) This minimalist kitchen and pantry for a new waterfront residence integrates a tremendous number of appliances and features, while keeping the look fresh, contemporary and sophisticated. Functional areas were created including a cooking zone, entertainment seating and a bar.
Poggenpohl can be found in homes in more than 70 countries around the world. Integrating the size and architecture of the built environment, its designers start with a clean slate and work from there, considering the space and the customer’s preferred design theme to create a unique, individual kitchen. After a 30-year occupant moved out, a young couple purchased this apartment, refreshing it with daring and unique finishes from head to toe. The tiny, 49-square-foot kitchen (small even by New York standards) receives its personality from Poggenpohl’s gray nut tree cabinetry and aluminum backsplash— complete with Gorilla wallpaper. Functionality was key, with custom features to clear the countertops of clutter and create space for clever, smaller-scale appliances.

This kitchen design was part of a complete renovation on the 20th floor of a condominium in St. Louis, Missouri. The entire unit was stripped from floor to ceiling, and reconfigured to fulfill the homeowners’ wishes for an open floor plan. To accommodate their desire for a welcoming kitchen with clean lines, Poggenpohl products were used here and in nearly every room in the home. The result is a modern, seamless aesthetic.

This July/August issue marks our annual celebration of global design. In it, we take you around the world— everywhere from a curated concept shop in Marrakesh to a 1950s Berlin high-rise-turned-whimsical hotel, with bicycles suspended from the lobby’s ceiling. We also, always, bring you much closer to home with the best in regional design. While jetting off to another time zone can often inspire, so, too, can your own zip code. In addition, we’re encouraging readers to take another trip this summer: over to our new digital content site, luxedaily.luxesource.com, where you’ll discover design-related stories galore. Our 13 regional editions of Luxe provide an endless array of styles, ideas and design resources from across the country.
This page: Luxe takes you on an international journey this issue, highlighting such dynamic global venues as Morocco’s L’Hôtel Marrakech (top, left and right), designed by Jasper Conran, and the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin (above).

214 Modern Vintage
“While it isn’t a trend but rather a predictable constant in design, metals were on display at Spring Market. Seeing the way companies like Milling Road for Baker reimagined classic finishes—as they did with the Wrap console—in a fresh and modern way is incredibly inspiring to us. The marble top paired with the sleek, sexy base makes this piece a total showstopper. Vintage was another strong theme we saw in furnishings, art and accessories. We were impressed with the Barrie Benson collection for Highland House. The way she reimagined vintage pieces of furniture and explored bold color palettes was exciting beyond words!” Milling Road

“Craftsmanship and an appreciation for artisan work were dominant themes at HPMKT, and are a major cultural push impacting interior design today. The usage of materials in their raw form showcases their natural beauty. Our absolute favorite was the Floating Credenza 1702 from Craft Associates Furniture. They used solid walnut to create the most sensual form that celebrates the grain of the wood.” Credit: Addison Jones Photography

“Neutrals were being paired with different styles and accents throughout the showrooms we visited at HPMKT. We fell head over heels for the John-Richard Brass Six-Light Chandelier. The white marble paired so fabulously together with the brass—such a modern take on a classic chandelier shape and style. We also loved the Bark Chair by OLY—the classic style with the textured look of tree bark can be used in interior or exterior applications. We love the OLY line in general because of the clean modern vibe that gives a nod to past classic looks.”

Welcome to the July/August summer issue of Luxe Interiors + Design San Francisco. One of our favorite groups to support here in San Francisco is the ASID California Peninsula Chapter. Recently, we had the pleasure of experiencing the virtual reality viewing room that the chapter’s local design team created at the San Jose Cinequest Film Festival. Plus, we were honored to be a part of Zephyr Ventilation’s celebration of its newly renovated San Francisco showroom, as well as Milgard Window & Doors’ happy hour in Mill Valley, which was another fun industry gathering for our clients to enjoy. I also want to thank our friends at Cambria for hosting another amazing dinner for our Gold List designers at the company’s stunning showroom. We are so fortunate to have such fantastic clients to work and collaborate with. Thank you to you all. Enjoy the issue!

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ
MIMI FAUCETT Writer / Austin My creative influences come from… Print magazines. Nothing gives me more creative joy than a favorite, familiar magazine still having the ability to surprise me. Long live print! Favorite book: Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington. Not only is the story inspiring, but the hot-orange cover makes this book coffee table-worthy. Top three things on your design wish list: I’m dying for a set of black linen sheets from Hawkins New York—what I consider to be the perfect summer bed set. I’m also currently obsessing over L.A. artist Bari Ziperstein’s quirky ceramic vases, and I’m steadily saving a spot on my wall for a face painting (or two!) from Sally King Benedict. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: My grandmother, Nana. She’s someone who’s generous with time, laughter and sensitivity, but first and foremost, she’s a listener. It’s rare to get a story about her past, but when you do, it’s always fascinating.
ARIC ATTAS
Photographer / Palm Beach If not a photographer, I would be… A musician. I’ve performed with jazz, rock and blues bands over the years. I also create guitar-based Ambient Soundscapes to accompany many of my fine art exhibitions, as I find sound is a great counterpoint to my visually oriented work. Prized possessions: I have a photograph from the first roll of film I shot. It’s a black-and-white print I took at age 12, and I treasure it because I’m intrigued by how this simple close-up of a printing press foreshadowed my fascination with light, space, form and design. Also, my health. Having won two fights with cancer, I am aware of the value of good health, and I cherish it every day. Finally, I love my best friend and studio mate, Macchiato, a 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was rescued from an elephant preserve. Upcoming project: I’m excited to be working on new photographs for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Clare Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut, that will run from October 14 through December 31. These cosmos-inspired images explore the intersection of art, science and spirituality.
LX_COM14_Contributors.indd 92
ERIC PIASECKI Photographer / New York What type of design inspires you? Though my personal aesthetic tends to lean toward modern, I enjoy all different types of interiors. Right now, I really like seeing how designers are taking traditional design and adding modern twists to make it more contemporary. If money were no object, I’d buy… A new horse for our barn in New Mexico. Most interesting person you’ve met: Years ago, we were shooting Versace’s mansion in South Beach, Miami, and I got to meet famed photographer Helmut Newton by the gold-tiled pool—it was an over-the-top experience all around! Preferred superpower: It would have to be the ability to fly— no more airplanes! Of course, I would need some kind of side car for all my equipment.
KARA PICKMAN Writer / Miami Favorite design trend: That everything old becomes new again—I could live in any of Terence Conran’s design books, but I’m particularly partial to the 1974 edition of The House Book. And if you’re into obsessing over details (or like to think you are), check out the quirky photo styling in the 1990 edition of Complete Home Storage. Dream assignment: I’m honored to work with innovative clients across the country and around the world who champion art and design, including the Guggenheim, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Smithsonian, Design Miami/ and many more, and my goal is to always both expand and refine my client list and creative projects. Most-treasured possessions: The dining room table and chairs passed down to us from my mother-in-law and late father-in-law; they were custom-made in Spain for my wife’s grandmother. The table seats at least 10 and is so large we had to take the dimensions into account when we purchased our first home two years ago. There was no way we were buying a house where we couldn’t eat around that table! If I had $20,000 to blow, I’d… Commission the custom Cuban floor tiles my wife wants for our sun room—and start the renovation we’ve been planning. On your nightstand: Most recently, Elif Batuman’s novel The Idiot. If not a writer, I would be… An art conservator. Maybe in another life...

VISUAL HISTORY AT VENERABLE COVERINGS COMPANY DE GOURNAY, THE CECIL GURNEY SISTERS CARRY ON THEIR FATHER’S LEGACY WHILE KEEPING THEIR EYES ON THE FUTURE THROUGH A SERIES OF BUZZ-GENERATING COLLABORATIONS. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
Imagine growing up in a magical world where butterflies flutter along perfectly painted vines and mischievous monkeys frolic up and down the walls. Now imagine that place is your childhood home and those fanciful landscapes are the family business, and you might get a sense of the charmed upbringing had by sisters Hannah and Rachel Cecil Gurney. “We grew up in a stunning house, decorated by our father, just opposite Kensington Gardens in London,” says Hannah. “My sister and I used to sit on the stairs, fascinated by the Chinese figures on the wallpaper.” Depicting peasant life in rural 18th-century China, the pattern, which featured scenes of silk-weaving and porcelain-making, wasn’t just a work of breathtaking decoration, but also a lesson in history and culture. “It was all very exotic to a 6-year-old Londoner, and our father would happily spend hours talking us through it all,” she says. Their father, Claud Cecil Gurney, founded de Gournay, the world-renowned maker of exquisite handmade wallcoverings, christening the brand with the French root of the family name in 1986.

As the story goes, Claud had trouble finding skilled artisans to restore some antique wallpaper in his home; so, through the Chinese Trade Commission in London, he located artists familiar with the painting techniques in mainland China. Working with the craftsmen, he began to create hand-painted papers, reigniting a tradition that had begun in the early 18th century, when chinoiserie was all the rage among the European aristocracy. By staying true to original production techniques— typically six artisans work on a single paper that can take up to 150 hours to produce—Claud created a truly bespoke luxury item. Today, his daughters help run the company—Hannah as director, and Rachel as the global style manager—putting their stamp on a number of forward-thinking initiatives while preparing to take over the family business when their father retires. “Our father has been wonderful about allowing us to make decisions and take on a lot of responsibility,” says Hannah. “He understands that if he is serious about handing over the reins, he needs to trust and support our ideas and allow us to learn from our mistakes. We love what we do so much that we want to ensure we safeguard it for the next generation.” The company’s vision has expanded to include both more contemporary designs and ones that reflect other global perspectives, such as the more abstract Japanese and Korean collection, an
example of which features a weeping willow motif, or the Papiers Peints Panoramiques collection, which is inspired by 19th-century French murals of exotic scenes. “While de Gournay has always been seen as a company that makes very traditional hand-painted papers, my sister and I encourage a more modern aesthetic through employing innovative new techniques and colorways, as well as developing new collections,” says Hannah. One strategic move that has proven successful: a string of high-profile collaborations, the most recent of which is an au courant take on an Art Deco motif inspired by and created in conjunction with Harrods department store. “Art Deco is making a comeback in interior design, and I love the use of geometric shapes, gilt and lacquer in interiors,” says Rachel. “The new design features an ornate scallop pattern gilded onto a metallic background with hand-painted watercolor accents.” Adds Hannah, “The wallpaper has a contemporary edge that we think will appeal to a whole new audience.”
In the quest to expand the brand’s reach, de Gournay pairs up in September with style icon Kate Moss, the latest partnership to feature a boldface name more synonymous with the runway than the annals of interior design. Other recent sartorial collaborations include Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham and Moda Operandi. Most recently, the company teamed up with Italian fashion label Aquazzura for a line of embroidered footwear and a Tropicalia-inspired wallpaper (shown in part on the previous page), which they developed as a nod to brand founder Edgardo Osorio’s Colombian heritage. Of the synergy between the company and the fashion industry, Hannah feels it’s a natural fit—after all, wallpaper is a form of dressing for one’s home. “There are a lot of similarities between couture and de Gournay,” she says. “We make everything by hand to the highest quality while offering limitless bespoke capabilities. Furthermore, people with style tend to have flair when it comes to their interiors, and vice versa. These days being stylish extends to a whole lifestyle, not just your clothing.”

RADAR / BIG IDEA
All handmade rugs tell a tale, spinning a narrative through silk and wool. In the case of Amadi Carpets, there’s another story as well: In 1984, the Ahmadi family fled war-torn Afghanistan to neighboring Pakistan, eventually emigrating to America with little more than the clothes on their backs and a talent for weaving. Here, Zubair Ahmadi, one of the five brothers behind the brand, shares with us the company’s artistic and philanthropic vision. For 20 years, Amadi Carpets has created some of the most dynamic and finely made rugs on the market. How did you learn the skills of the trade? Growing up in a family of nine children in Afghanistan, we learned the art of weaving from our mother, whose family opened the first silk-weaving factory in Kabul during the 1960s. As a kid, I worked on the loom alongside my brothers after school. We also learned to restore different types of antique rugs and textiles from various countries over the years, so we not only have a knowledge of the construction, but we’re familiar with different techniques and styles. Those same skills eventually led me and my brother, Zabi, to open
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY S. CHEVALIER
our own small 400-square-foot workshop in Los Angeles in 1995, where we refurbished rugs found at flea markets and auctions. Today, all five of us—Zabi, Assad, Jawid, Murtaza and me—work collectively on operations and designs at Amadi. How did you grow the company from a local repair shop to a global enterprise? Two years after opening our shop, we couldn’t find the quality of rugs we desired. We learned of numerous Afghan weavers who had fled to nearby Peshawar, Pakistan, during the civil war in the 1990s. We feel a deep connection with the people of Afghanistan and were looking for a way to assist those refugees. Zabi made the journey to Peshawar in 1997, and, coincidentally, ran into a foreman who worked in the factory that belonged to our mother’s family. Hiring him and his family led to employing other refugees. As the years went on, five looms turned into 10, 10 turned into 200, and soon we were employing over 1,000 Afghan weavers living in Pakistan.
At what point did you move the weaving operation back to Afghanistan? After the country’s liberation from the Taliban in 2003, many of the workers returned to Afghanistan. That’s when we opened our first weaving workshop in Kabul and our focus shifted to employing an ignored sector of the population: women. It was our goal to create a safe workplace
where women would be empowered to make a living. It wasn’t easy: Even though we were from Afghanistan ourselves, we had to convince fathers, husbands and brothers that we were setting up a safe, harassment-free environment for their daughters, wives and sisters. Providing transportation to and from work offered them further protection. Additionally, due to four decades of ongoing war, a whole generation has been raised without an education; therefore, we offer one hour of basic reading and writing lessons every day. In terms of the process, what distinguishes you from other rug companies? Since we control our own production, we get to be more creative, productive and effective than a typical rug gallery or company. From sourcing the raw wool to washing it, carding and dying it, we control every step. And the fact that we are improving lives along the way is an added plus. Share what’s next for Amadi, design- and philanthropy-wise. We want to be more than a rug company. We’d like to launch furniture and textile lines one day. In terms of giving back, our goal is to extend the outreach of our programs and build more weaving centers in other parts of Afghanistan. After all, women are the backbone of the family, so if you help one woman, you help many people beyond her.

When you walk into Katherine Wildt O’Brien’s studio, you’d be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a jeweler’s workshop or a geology buff’s paradise. A panoply of glimmering stones greets visitors of the space—with bright crystal quartz, deep violet amethyst and gleaming pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, all on glorious display. Unearthed from the farthest reaches of the globe, the shining specimens inspire New York City-based
Matthew Studios’ collections, which include hardware, lighting and case goods. Wildt O’Brien’s love of exotic rocks started at a young age. As a teenager, she worked parttime in a gem shop, where an eccentric, elderly West Indian woman taught her about crystals and their properties. Following her passion, she established Matthew Studios, named for her pet rabbit, in 2008. Her big break came when Tory Burch asked her to design crystal luminaries

for her stores. “Just walking into the Tory Burch offices is so inspiring,” she says. “When we got the opportunity to work on custom lamps for her, it was a dream come true, not to mention a creative learning experience.” Today, the company occupies a large loft space in Harlem, close to where the designer lives. In fact, it was the area’s African market, just a few blocks away from her studio, that provided the impetus for Wildt O’Brien’s latest hardware line. “I love the handcrafted, global ‘Gypset’ vibe at the market,” she says. “I have been collecting cowrie shell earrings for years and have wanted to do a collection incorporating them, since the cowrie shell is a traditional symbol of wisdom and abundance. Horn is another favorite used in African craft, and a powerful talisman of strength and inner power.” Acquiring it is another story: “It took two years to find a reputable source for naturally shed horn,” she says. Not surprisingly, Wildt O’Brien’s inspiration board is full of recognizable safari-chic imagery, such as film stills from Out of Africa, photos from vintage Ralph Lauren runway shows, the work of photographer Peter Beard and shots of intricate, hand-beaded Masai necklaces. “The pieces are imbued with a nomadic spirit,” she says. A passion for travel, painting and even flea-market finds also filters into the design process. “I recently found a red-tagged, sale-bin rhinestone purse, and the handle inspired my new metal Harper cabinet pull series,” she says. Refined settings of polished brass, nickel and chrome allow the stones to steal the show, whether it’s the deep whiskey-hued facets of smoky quartz or the vibrant emerald waves of malachite—both of which are sourced from mines in South America and Africa, respectively.
LX_COM14_Radar_Bespoke_MathewStudio.indd 104
“Simple forms are paired with natural, tonal textures that resonate against hand-cast metal,” Wildt O’Brien says. That juxtaposition of organic forms with polished finishes lends the collection a sophisticated well-traveled vibe that hints at many of the pieces’ exotic origins. Says the designer, “I’m still charmed by the idea that these stones have journeyed around the world to end up in a stylish new setting.”

▲ BIENNALE INTERIEUR, KORTRIJK, BELGIUM
Reason to go: The best of Nordic style is on full display here, with more than 700 eyecatching new introductions in furnishings, accessories and lighting, in an event that coincides with the festivities of Stockholm Design Week. What you’ll find: Eighty percent of the products are Scandinavian in origin, so it’s no surprise that regional brands, such as up-and-coming lighting design line Pholc, as well as established brands like Svenskt Tenn, whose vibrant style is shown in the vignette at right, are well represented. Smaller makers are celebrated, too, for their reinterpretations of traditional Scandi style. While the fair itself unfolds at Stockholmsmässan convention center, the entire city plays host to over 100 events, installations and parties as part of Design Week. stockholmfurniturelightfair.se
OCTOBER 2018
Reason to go: Small in size, but big in design talent, Belgium is a growing destination for creatives and aesthetes alike, and this highly selective, rigorously curated show happens every two years. A nonprofit fair, the Biennale Interieur’s unique installations often blur the line between commercial design and fine art. What you’ll find: With nearly half of the new products hailing from Belgium, you’ll see innovative twists on regional vernacular staples such as neutral linens, raw and rough-hewn woods, and burnished metals. The focus is on mostly local, European-produced design with a decidedly international point of view, and collaborations across industries or cultures are encouraged. Past galleries represented include Maniera from Brussels, Carwan Gallery from Beirut, and Paris’ Studio Dessuant Bone, whose “Perpetual Motion” installation is shown here. interieur.be

APRIL 17-22, 2018
Reason to go: Top Italian luxury brands save their launches for this acclaimed show, which is one of the world’s largest and most-buzzed-about furniture fairs, with more than 2,000 exhibitors on display. The fair runs in conjunction with two other shows that alternate each year: Euroluce (with international lighting releases) and EuroCucina (showcasing new innovations in kitchens). What you’ll find: Aesthetic beauty, perfected over the centuries by the Italians, is the hallmark of the show, which takes place during Milan Design Week. In addition to dramatic displays in the Mario Bellini-designed convention center (like the Cappellini booth at right from last year’s show), the city at large gets into the spirit, offering up its 17th-century palazzos, empty concrete train vaults and even 12th-century churchyards as magnificent settings for designer suites or lines of lighting, making a stroll through the already alluring Italian city full of even more magic and wonder. salonemilano.it/en/
MAISON&OBJET, PARIS JANUARY 19-23, 2018
Reason to go: While one rarely needs an excuse to visit Paris, Maison&Objet gives design aficionados added incentive, as well as a sneak peek into the lifestyle and home decor looks that will soon catch on everywhere. What you’ll find: Having originated as an exhibition of tabletop decor, the vision for the show has expanded exponentially—it now occupies eight halls, each one’s offerings ascending in grandeur, culminating in full-scale room displays by leading international brands. While the convention center is a 30-minute shuttle ride from the city, ce n’est pas grave—new grave talents to discover, like Zuza Mengham and Glassworks, the artists responsible for the objets at left, respectively, make the trip worth it. Occurring simultaneously in the city is Paris Deco Off, a showcase for the newest textiles and wallcoverings from top global companies. maison-objet.com 108 / LUXESOURCE.COM

JAY JEFFERS + ARTERIORS Jay Jeffers has long been charming the local community with unique furniture finds, home accents and decorative objects at his Tenderloin store. Two years ago, he wowed design aficionados with an accessories line for Arteriors. Now he’s at it again, but this time, Jeffers has expanded his reach and debuted a bigger collection for the company that includes furnishings, lighting and new accessories. It’s all meant to exude livable luxury and the feeling that each piece has been thoughtfully acquired over time. “I imagined hosting a party and everything you might need in the room,” Jeffers says. “I designed around that idea, creating everything from comfortable sofas that look handsome from every angle to modular tables and lighting that will make a room glow.” Using his signature layered aesthetic, 110 / luxesource.com

When did you open? I opened the storefront on Post Street in a historic 1926 Tudor Revival high-rise building last December. What is your vision for the boutique? I am proud to share my European heritage and would like consumers to learn about the incredible design that was produced in Austria and the surrounding countries in the 20th century. At the shop, I have glasses designed by Josef Hoffmann in 1912, and they look just as modern today as they did more than 100 years ago. How do you create a memorable customer experience? I grew up in a hotel; my family was in the industry, so hospitality is very important to me. I wanted to offer shoppers great high-end design in a welcoming environment. Every guest is greeted in the shop with an offer of coffee or tea from the famous Viennese gourmet store Julius Meinl. We want you to linger for the fullest experience. On the floor: We carry mostly vintage modernist design from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Italy. You’ll find rare sculptures and lamps by French artist Philippe Cheverny, white-and-black modernist bisque vases from Germany, a chrome bar set designed by Gio Ponti, Augarten porcelain and Lobmeyr crystal, plus work by local artists including Lucky Rapp, Carrie Ann Plank, David Reposar and Gioi Tran. We also have our own private line of sofas, cashmere throws and pillows. adeenidesigngroup.com

Throw all your preconceived notions about eco-friendly design out the window. Sustainable materials and building methods have come a long way since the early days of planet-conscious practices. “Since the company’s inception, we have been creating furniture that is as healthy for our customers as it is for the planet,” says founder of Cisco Home Cisco Pinedo. “We believe that health, happiness and one’s home are inextricably linked.” The company also strives to keep production local, working with master artisans such as Conan Castillo, who creates beautifully crafted pieces from such found objects as old factory conveyor belts and vintage trunks. The Los Angeles-based Cisco Home continues to expand its footprint in the Bay Area with a brand-new store on Sacramento Street’s design row. Here, Pinedo shares his ideal day exploring San Francisco. ciscohome.net 7 a.m. I head to the Alameda Flea Market early since this is prime time for uncovering real treasures. I have found vintage lighting, midcentury chairs and stunning textiles. The beauty of going to a flea market is that the vendors are not specific. We make pillows and upholster small chairs and ottomans with the textiles we find at Alameda—they provide new inspiration for our Cisco Prints collections. 10 a.m. Breakfast at Mama’s is my favorite. It’s on Washington Square in North Beach, and after a long morning of scouring the flea market, you can sit down for a true breakfast of champions. By that, I mean chocolate-cinnamon French toast, blueberry pancakes and eggs Benedict with prosciutto and grilled tomato. 12 p.m. I like to cover a lot of territory when I’m in San Francisco. So, I take the ferry to Sausalito, then hop over to the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur for some shopping and a light
bite alfresco at Farmshop. I also always like to check out Unionmade—it has the best selection of slim-fit denim in a wide range of washes. 2 p.m. Back in the city, I enjoy perusing Sacramento Street. It has a great combination of local shops and design stores. March is well designed and has fantastic kitchen items—I love the knives and spices. The Future Perfect is housed in a striking contemporary space and features a beautifully curated collection of cool accessories. Bright on Presidio is also an amazing lighting store. 5 p.m. If I have time, I’ll fit in a hike at Muir Woods or the Marin Headlands. Both are gorgeous places to explore. 7 p.m. I’ll meet friends for dinner at Delfina—it’s the quintessential neighborhood spot. Finally, I’ll hop on the last flight back to Los Angeles!

HUBBARDTON FORGE
“
As a lighting designer, I should not be too focused on only the light fixture, but how that fixture interacts with the entire space, even if I don’t know what that space looks like.
” LED: LIGHTING THE FUTURE
An evolution in lighting design has taken place, incorporating new materials and technologies. Instead of retrofitting existing designs with LEDs, Hubbardton Forge has been developing designs specifically around the technology. To this end, the company has developed new initiatives, like using a local glassblower for many of its pieces and working with a local firm to develop LED components, thereby decreasing its environmental footprint. “We’re using LEDs in new and interesting ways,” Kitts says. “With our Möbius mini pendant, we were able to shape and form the light-guide element so that it becomes a sculptural aspect of the piece.”
1
When lighting the kitchen or bath, Hubbardton Forge’s director of design, David Kitts, has this one directive. “Select light fixtures that you love; not just like. The bathroom should be your own personal oasis, and your kitchen should be a place where friends and family gather.” Insightful advice from the design lead of America’s foremost luxury lighting manufacturer. Lighting sets the mood, so he suggests mini pendants in multiples over a kitchen island and a chandelier or pendant with dimmable light above the tub. “The pendants won’t interfere with the line of sight for guests or family in the kitchen, and the chandelier creates a spa-like atmosphere in the bath,” he continues. A true American success story, Hubbardton Forge is known for pushing the limits of form and materials to create handcrafted designs that meld the artistry and functionality of lighting. With 230 designers and makers, engineers and production team and staff, the HF team views the world through unique prisms as they create beautiful pieces. Take Kitts’ recent trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, where its street art opened his eyes to a new way of looking at lighting. “I was inspired not by the content or quality of the work, but how the art interacted and contributed to the space, the building and the neighborhood,” he says. “Walking past the same mural on a sunny day and then again on a stormy day could be two very different experiences.”

According to the team at Cosentino, when it comes to surface solutions, granite has always been popular, but more consumers are moving toward quartz for its array of colors, lower maintenance and higher durability. And when it comes to style, they’re seeing contemporary themes, including industrial (midcentury modern and coastal), that combine clean lines, built-ins and simple cabinetry. As innovators in the world of kitchens and baths, Cosentino should know. The global company offers the latest in surfacing solutions by staying at the forefront of trends and manufacturing technologies. With the widest array of color and material choices, the company stresses the importance of cohesiveness so everything works together in the completed space. “Think long term,” the team says. “ ‘Will you love that bold color in a few years?’ ‘If you sell your home, would your choices be appealing to other buyers?’ “ They also cite the importance of weighing your lifestyle as much as your style. “While it’s easy to make decisions based on looks alone, it’s important to think about how you use your space.” These answers inform everything from material choice to amenities one should include in their kitchen or bath.

STYLISH + SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS When you choose Cosentino products, you are getting the best on the market. Their advanced technical qualities, wide color options and 25-year warranty stand apart from the rest. For countertops, the new N-Boost advancement improves the color and luster of Silestone quartz, and makes it easier to clean than ever before. And while Dekton, the ultracompact surface with superior durability, isn’t new, Cosentino continues to create innovative color options that replicate the look of other materials. For energy efficiency and environmentally friendly products, Silestone’s ECO Line delivers with a series of colors made from up to 75-percent-recycled content, while Dekton Trillium is made from 60-percentrecycled content. Additionally, the company pays special attention to maintaining low emissions and a 98-percent reuse of water.

Meticulous crafting, smart technology, luxury appointments and user-centric design come together in the portfolio of DXV, the deluxe bath and kitchen product line that reimagines the most influential design movements of our time. “DXV fixtures and faucets are inspired by historically significant designs, reinterpreting them in light of today’s aesthetic and performance demands,” says Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, DXV’s vice president of design. “When designing our lines, we integrate subtle highlights that showcase our meticulous crafting, and incorporate elements of personalization so clients can reflect their personal style.” Everything from genuine leather pulls and wood detailing to new material and finish options. For the kitchens and baths of tomorrow, the DXV team also puts intuitive touches, water efficiency and hands-free options into the creative mix. “We integrate new technologies in meaningful ways, making life safer, healthier and more beautiful for the end user,” L’Henaff continues. In terms of trends, clean, contemporary lines continue to be popular with a movement toward pure, simple forms that provide elegant utility. This objective supports DXV’s mindset to embrace quality, design, engineering, function and reliability in the core materials used to craft its luxury product collections.
3-D PRINTING + THE FUTURE OF DESIGN DXV is excited and inspired by the new possibilities that 3-D printing presents to the building and construction industry, particularly how it relates to bespoke design options. Its first-ever collection of 3-D-printed metal faucets represents the commitment of DXV to be a leader in this coming paradigm shift. Being first to market with a game-changing offering of working residential faucets created via 3-D printing speaks volumes about the creativity and originality that the DXV brand brings to luxury homes seeking distinctive, one-of-a-kind design innovations.

We believe in clean lines and timeless elegance with user-friendly features and the highest quality materials for every type of cook. Harmonious design is also key, making sure everything aligns perfectly together in the kitchen.
Unique features, the latest innovations and harmonious design characterize the centuriesold kitchen appliance manufacturer Miele. Since its founding in 1899, the German-based innovator has remained true to its philosophy of “Immer Besser”, or forever better, forward-thinking, environmentally friendly kitchen designs with the added promise of superior quality, convenience and the most discerning attention to detail. “We want to ensure that our customers have peace of mind when choosing Miele for their appliance needs,” vice president of marketing Christian Schwarz says. As the kitchen continues to be the hub of the home and a central location for entertaining and living, Miele rises to the occasion with colored appliances, steam and induction options, and smart technology as the “connected” kitchen grows in prominence. WOOD-MODE FINE CUSTOM CABINETRY
“
For 75 years, Wood-Mode has been producing high-quality cabinetry with time-honored techniques that blend timeless craftsmanship and functionality with a fashionforward approach to design.
”
For affluent homeowners and designers, Wood-Mode products are easily recognizable, from their wide variety of stains and finishes, to well-proportioned door styles and detailed moldings. But the high-end cabinetry manufacturer goes beyond the surface with smart features, such as motion technology for doors, unique storage solutions and integrated lighting, that increase the functional use of any space. “The integration of LED lighting into Wood-Mode cabinet interiors continues to evolve and will become more prevalent,” director of design John Troxell says. “Technology and design innovations have made former challenges, such as interior, recessed vertical lighting and drawer bank lighting, a standard option now.” When discussing trending styles, Troxell says transitional and contemporary looks continue, drawing on recycled materials or midcentury modern details to define the effect. No matter the style, the team at Wood-Mode agrees—cohesion is key. And when starting any renovation, they offer these tried-and-true tips: Do your homework; develop a wish list; establish a budget and a time frame; and collect images of rooms, features and products you like. Troxell adds, “A growing array of materials and finish applications will provide consumers and designers with greater possibilities to create kitchens and other rooms that are uniquely personal.”

WOOD-MODE ON … ILLUMINATION + INNOVATION Wealthy urban and suburban homeowners are increasing the square footage of their kitchens, combining multiple spaces into one large, open-concept area. This provides us with a lot of opportunities, including custom-made furniture like bookcases and desks, along with breakfast nooks and multipurpose islands. Designers and homeowners also have the option to select species and finishes that complement or contrast within their design. Other trends include interior lighting with integrated LED, under-cabinet and in-cabinet options. We continue to be inspired by advances in storage and functionality as well. And metal is making its mark, with stainless-steel countertops and metallic fronts for cabinets increasing in demand.

ZEPHYR
When asked to describe the philosophy behind Zephyr, company president Luke Siow says, “We strive to transform the kitchen through design, discovery and care. Through our products, design partnerships and innovative technology, we hope to elevate the kitchen as a center for self-expression, family and well-being.” Fait accompli for the foremost kitchen hood manufacturer, marking its 20th anniversary this year with a look back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing hoods. The first manufacturer to bring performance and power-driven ventilation to the kitchen, Zephyr made a name for itself with the introduction of its European-style chimney hoods. Since that time, the company has launched industry firsts such as its DCBL Suppression System®, and Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. Zephyr continues to break design barriers and give designers and consumers more options with its new Black Stainless Steel hoods with titanium coating; a sleek alternative to stainless steel. “Consumers believe that heightened design should be central in the kitchen, and are uncompromising when it comes to performance and quality,” Siow says. With thoughtful designs and an ongoing commitment to technological advancement, Zephyr elevated the kitchen hood from a purely utilitarian appliance to an eye-catching, artful centerpiece.
2
“
Zephyr continues to change the marketplace by blending form and function to create beautiful, high-quality hoods that are an asset to any home.

Not long after, Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition Design Group and the creative powerhouse behind products like Beats by Dre, joined Zephyr to create the innovative Arc Collection. A geometrically stunning marriage of glass and metal, this collection offers designers and homeowners modern sophistication at its finest.

THE RESTAURANT AT HOTEL PANACHE PARIS, FRANCE Located in the lively opera district of the city’s 9th arrondissement, this Art Nouveau-inspired bistro is emblematic of the neighborhood’s storied past and innate creative energy. Influenced by the triangular shape of the building, Parisian designer Dorothee Meilichzon, of Chzon, fostered continuity throughout with geometric details like round light fixtures and striped and hexagonal patterns, along with bright pops of color, all while maintaining the restaurant’s classical French integrity—as seen in the pieces shown here.

At first sight: I’m completely impressed with Oeuffice’s penchant for reimagining the classics: They manage to create sculptural works of art that are equally functional and versatile. On composition: It’s against this backdrop that the stools prove their inherent duality. They feel natural against the exposed brick but would also easily hold their own in both a formal or contemporary setting. As far as design goes… Italy really has no limits. These stools resonate with the country’s influential style in part because of the simple application of elegant, timeless materials; the Cipollino Apuano marble is super-sleek, the travertine is very porous, and the Rosa Perlino marble is full of movement. Each element is independently unassuming, but in union, striking works of art are born. Lasting impression: Refined, sculptural, bold, fresh and playful.

POST MATES THE PIECES: Ionik Stool and Tuskan Stool THE DESIGNER: Oeuffice FIND IT: mattermatters.com THE INSPIRATION: When Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Jakub Zak’s creativity united in 2011 to form their U.K.-based design laboratory, Oueffice, they challenged themselves to imagine limited-edition objects, that were reminiscent of utopian ideals and innovation. Enter the Ionik and Tuskan stools, both part of a second coming of the studio’s Kapital collection and based on primitive stone columns resonant with classical architecture. Handcrafted in Italy using solid-stone blocks, they are modern in aesthetic and scale but maintain the integrity of their inspirational era—an edgy balance very much in line with the contemporary duo’s manifesto.

PALETTE PLEASER THE PIECE: Spring Lamp in Irish Green THE DESIGNER: Mathieu Lehanneur FIND IT: carpentersworkshopgallery.com THE INSPIRATION: Paris-based designer/artist/science enthusiast Mathieu Lehanneur dreamed up the Spring lamp, alongside its counterparts from the Spring series, with the intention of transporting design lovers to a land of natural and ecological metamorphosis. Lehanneur’s aim to create eye-catching objects that examine nature’s poetic side is realized in this delicate lighting fixture, comprised of a bundle of hand-blown, ribbed-glass tubes in a rich green marble base. Along with other materials from the series, both the marble and glass were incorporated into the piece in their natural color and condition— inciting a primitive moment in an otherwise distinctly modern piece.
LX_COM14_Market_Spotlight.indd 148
OLIVER M. FURTH INTERIOR DESIGNER OLIVERMFURTH.COM
At first sight: There’s a wonderful sense of fluidity to this light fixture, almost like water that’s lit from within. Artist to artist: In my own work, I’m constantly trying to push the design dialogue forward, and this piece falls in that special spot between design and sculpture. Lehanneur is playing with our preconceived notions of what a lamp is and propelling those ideas a little further. It’s important… To know the rules before you break them. Here, the artist is clearly informed about design, which is why any risks taken clearly paid off. Global musings: As our world becomes larger, it’s increasingly important to look inward and become more focused. For example, I try to figure out what an area offers that’s specific to that place, whether woven silk textiles in Laos or innovative lighting in Paris. I am always on the hunt for the offbeat and the unusual. The French… Have been innovators in decorative arts since AndréCharles Boulle’s then-groundbreaking furniture in the 17th century, and I think Lehanneur is definitely following in the footsteps of his countrymen. Lasting impression: This design is sculptural, graceful, fluid, lyrical and dynamic.

CRATE MATTERS THE PIECE: P2 Lavinia Exagonal Armchair THE DESIGNER: Lazzarini & Pickering for Marta Sala Éditions FIND IT: thefutureperfect.com THE INSPIRATION: A second collaboration between noted Italian architect Marta Sala and Roman architectural studio Lazzarini & Pickering brings us the P2 Lavinia Exagonal armchair, a showstopper from Marta Sala Éditions’ Collection No – 2. Shown in a sumptuous Pierre Frey fabric, the seat’s striking shape and seductive proportions incite immediate interest. One would expect no less from this power collab, but there is still something to be said about a design that equally prizes comfort and allure. And in the case of the P2 Lavinia: Mission accomplished.
LEO PARRELLA
INTERIOR DESIGNER LEOPARRELLA.COM
At first sight: The Lavania Exagonal armchair is incredibly modern and reminiscent of Italian furniture from the 1960s and ’70s—a fitting result from this pairing of industry leaders. The piece is as smart from behind as it is straight on, and the exacting lines are both gorgeous and unapologetic. As a first-generation Italian… I may be biased, but I feel that Italy is the undisputed leader in design. Be it automobiles or architecture, furniture or fashion, the legacy of our people is bold, thoughtful design, and this piece is clearly Italian-born. Global gatherers: The hunt and find is one of the more thrilling parts of what I get to do with interiors. Pieces collected from around the world add that transportive element of a life welllived. And an international piece with heritage or a good story gives a sense of being collected rather than assembled. Lasting impression: This striking seat reads as stylish, architectural, luxurious and dramatic.

SEND AND DELIVER THE PIECES: Mali Vases and Jethi Vases THE DESIGNER: Jaimal Odedra FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Moved by the melodious rhythm of bamboo forests, decorated fashion vet Jaimal Odedra set out to explore a new medium with his Mali and Jethi vases. Using bronze in the traditional sand-casting technique, the vases are handmade by artisans in Morocco, and though Odedra visualizes each form and silhouette, the life of each piece is organically determined by the skilled hands that shape it—resulting in one-of-a-kind mini masterpieces.
CONSUELO PIERREPONT AND KATIE SPALDING INTERIOR DESIGNERS SWAY-STUDIO.COM
At first sight: Jaimal’s pieces exude a dramatic subtlety and a relaxed-luxe nature. They’re extremely elevated and yet artisanal all at once. We are really drawn… To the versatility of these beautiful objects. They are such unique designs but don’t have an obvious provenance, in the best way possible. In design, culture and spirit… Morocco is perpetually inspiring with its use of colors, shapes and the effortless ability to seamlessly blend everything together. While these vases are a more modern interpretation of these traits, they embody the country’s unmistakable mélange of the organic and the well-crafted. Global musings: Nothing adds layers like sourcing from around the world. Our clients want to know the stories that are attached to a piece; they want us to use pieces that tell a part of their story. Jaimal’s works seem to do just that. Lasting impression: Fluid, effortless and memorable.

INTERIOR DESIGNER MEGANPFLUGDESIGNS.COM
At first sight: The Celestial bowls are the perfect fusion of traditional forms with modernized midcentury ideals. While the shapes are evocative of ancient pottery, the studded embellishments are extremely current and pack an edgy punch. Ceramics (and Tulum for that matter) are… Having a huge moment, which makes Elad’s latest collection even more special and relevant. It’s really lovely to see regions with a long-standing relationship to these materials and techniques making a mark on contemporary design. The resulting pieces always seem to have the most integrity. At home: I imagine these objects functioning beautifully as both decor and utilitarian objects. I’m already picturing filling them with fruit or creating an unexpected floral arrangement. Lasting impressing: The Celestial bowls are modern, punk, classical and statement-making.

CASED GOODS THE PIECES: Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Green and Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Black THE DESIGNER: Elad Yifrach FIND IT: l-objet.com THE INSPIRATION: Elad Yifrach, the mastermind behind lifestyle brand L’Objet, fell in love with Tulum, Mexico, the moment his senses connected with the town’s lustrous and unparalleled warmth and energy. This beachy nook along the Yucatan Peninsula and its storied history inspired a collection of earthy, charmingly desaturated and understated yet elegant pieces. The Celestial bowls, especially, speak to Yifrach’s devotion to Tulum’s vibrancy and aesthetic: a little bit wild but nevertheless the pinnacle of authenticity.

WHITE GLOVE THE PIECE: The Man Ray Glass Leaf Mirror THE DESIGNER: Cox London FIND IT: rosetarlow.com THE INSPIRATION: After years of creative collaboration and a mutual affinity for the decorative arts, design duo Christopher and Nicola Cox officially joined forces in 2005 with the launch of their London studio. Ever since then, they have been producing exquisite and original pieces—the Man Ray mirror being no exception. A love letter to 19th-century French Dieppe bone mirrors, the Man Ray is a striking blend of handpulled ivory glass leaves, carved silver gilt wood and hand-silvered mirror plate, and embodies the very vision of its creators: designs that are rich in technique and timelessness.
MAX HUMPHREY INTERIOR DESIGNER MAXHUMPHREY.COM
At first sight: This showstopper of a mirror appeals to me in that it is extremely delicate but commanding of your attention—a true statement piece indeed. It also speaks to the fabulousness of Cox London as a company. Add Rose Tarlow’s stamp of approval and I’m sold. As an Anglophile… With a lifelong obsession for all things British—pop music, movies, art and design—this mirror epitomizes the U.K. tradition of things not always being what they seem. At first, I thought it was comprised of a million little shark teeth à la Damien Hirst’s renowned tiger shark in formaldehyde sculpture, which like this mirror, doesn’t fully register until staring it right in the face. On composition: I love the contrast of this fragile piece dwelling in an industrial space, when one would normally anticipate it living in a traditional environment. Lasting impression: This mirror is delicate, intricate, beautiful and unexpected.

While there’s no place like your own abode, we’d wager that any one of the hotel kitchens or baths we hand-selected for the following pages would prove suitable exceptions. Hot spots such as this Soho House Istanbul apartment have all the calling cards of luxury lodging but enjoy amplified comfort and convenience thanks to design details—such as this fully integrated kitchen and bar—reminiscent of a residential space. DU CAFÉ Nothing beats waking up to a hot pot of freshly brewed coffee, especially when your caffeine fi x comes with a heavy side of style thanks to the minimalist lines of the S02 Brewer Stand Set by Kinto. ON THE MARK At first glance, one might mistake this chic room for the galley kitchen of an urban pied-à-terre. However, the space—featuring a customizable cabinet system designed by Piero Lissoni for Boffi with black granite countertops and appliances from Gaggenau, Miele and Sub-Zero—is in fact ensconced in one of The Mark’s Premier Three-Bedroom Suites in New York City. Designers Tara Mangini and Percy Bright of Jersey Ice Cream Company specified this kitchen within an apartment-like suite in Philadelphia’s Lokal Hotel with simple lines and Shaker-style millwork inspired by its surroundings. The kitchen also pairs light plaster walls with darker bottom cabinets to great effect as a nod to colorways of centuries past. “Design-wise, we took as many cues as we could from the historic neighborhood, one rich in American manufacturing history and beautiful late-19 th-century buildings,” explains Bright. staylokal.com

WONDER WALL
For a dining room blessed with floor-to-ceiling glass, bright white is essential for preserving the space’s natural luminosity, captured to perfection by Marie Turner Carson in this Bay Area home. 1 / Top Distinction: Generic white adopts real character with some traditional cottage clapping. Here, vertical channel-groove cedar siding continues into the dining room from the exterior, creating a fluid indooroutdoor flow and complementing the horizontal paneling in the hallway. 2 / Opposites Attract: Is there anything more classic than white paired with dark accents? This inky hue pops on built-in bookcases and the steel frames of these sweeping glass doors by Architectural Iron Works. 3 / High Flyer: Preserve your radiant room’s airy expanse with a delicate light fixture. With its slender, looping arms, this iron-and-wood chandelier from Lucca Antiques in Los Angeles injects a bit of feminine fancy. 4 / Calm Composure: The room’s stylish simplicity goes a step further with low-profile furnishings, like these two bleached-white-oak tables by Malvini and custom dining chairs elevated with slipcovers made in tactile Holly Hunt fabric.

Designer Kristin Rowell brings streamlined style to this down-to-earth farmhouse in Carmel’s Santa Lucia Preserve, which proves naturally suited to modern leanings, as exemplified in this sleek living room. 1 / Raw Refined: Consider abandoning paint all together and instead explore unvarnished finishes: This hand-troweled white plaster, for example, is so stunning that the subtle texture was left exposed for added softness. 2 / Bright Spot: Punctuate your empty walls with the neat modularity of a firebox. Only a simple molding is used as a surround to define the fireplace, while an angular screen does double duty as a sculptural statement. 3 / Neutral Territory: Well-curated furnishings are required when working with such understated architecture. Muted tones feel right at home here, with a gray couch and matching armchairs paired with navy blue accents on the throw pillow and area rug. 4 / High Shine: Opt for metallic decor accents, which gleam best against crisp white thanks to their reflective nature. With a nod to the home’s rustic surroundings, a gold-dipped impala skull on the concrete hearth gives a touch of glimmer.

Ideally perched for treetop views of a Calistoga hilltop, this second-floor master bedroom is the perfect picture of unaffected design, thanks to designer Kathryn Quinn, who struck a delicate balance between white-wall simplicity and cultivated details. 1 / Great Plains: Dodge the flat-white effect by sticking to well-illuminated areas for your pale palette. The bright sunlight in this dreamy, open bedroom helps the subdued space feel animated. 2 / Milk and Honey: Barely there hues take on a cozy mood when contrasted with warm woods—introduced here with an exposed coffered ceiling and a grand chest at the foot of the bed. 3 / Scenic Sights: Match your serene color scheme with white-on-white fenestration. These picture-book window frames blend into the surrounding walls, providing a seamless view of the outside greenery. 4 / Equal Measure: Double down on your monotone color treatment with equally creamy textiles. Textured bed linens and a plush chaise lounge, for example, lend tactile complexity while complementing the room’s rustic appeal.

PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF AS LUXE SETS AN INTERNATIONAL AGENDA THAT INCLUDES AMAZING ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRING INTERIORS AND MUST-SEE SIGHTS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER
FLIGHT OF FANCY Modern technology has put inspiration at our fingertips, dissolving traditional boundaries and making even the most remote pockets of the planet feel within reach. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of design, where at any given moment, creatives have access to a virtual library of beautiful images and products from around the globe without ever having to leave home. While armchair travel is a lovely way to kill a few hours, sometimes it’s necessary to put down that smartphone, hop on a plane and go see the sights firsthand. After all, there’s no comparison to experiencing the architecture of Marrakesh or Shanghai in person. To that end, we recruited a few of our favorite industry experts to share some of their top international spots for design lovers.
English artist Claire Brewster creates intricate paper sculptures from cut-out maps of the world. Birds in flight are a favorite subject, as in Done and Dusted shown here.

MARRAKESH EXPRESS
One look at her iconic line of carpets and textiles, and you can see the Moroccan inspiration behind Madeline Weinrib’s work. The New York-based designer has been making annual pilgrimages to Marrakesh for nearly 20 years. Below, she presents her top recommendations for shopping and sustenance. madelineweinrib.com
PLACES TO SHOP:
PLACES TO EAT:
33 RUE MAJORELLE Like a smaller version of the legendary Parisian boutique Colette, this open-concept shop just opposite the Majorelle Garden is stocked with an expertly curated collection of clothes, jewelry and art by local designers.
DAR YACOUT Designed by Bill Willis, the late American architect and decorator who helped put Marrakesh on the style map, this dining spot serves a set menu amid dramatic decor. Plan ahead; reservations are a must.
ALNOUR Located in the medina, or old city, this workshop and store is a social enterprise for handicapped women who are skilled in the art of embroidery. They sell exquisite, handmade linens for the home, as well as clothing. EL FENN BOUTIQUE With its impressive art collection and drop-dead gorgeous interiors, El Fenn, from Vanessa Branson, Virgin mogul Richard Branson’s sister, is one of the most stylish stays in the medina. Now, it features an adjoining boutique with an array of wonderful home goods, which can be shipped globally. I’ve collaborated with them on a collection of pillows, and all proceeds from sales benefit a foundation that teaches women to weave in the Atlas Mountains.
LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 180
NOMAD RESTAURANT With a modern menu that features fresh salads, Nomad is my favorite place for lunch in the medina. The café has a lovely terrace that overlooks “spice square,” where you can view all the exotic spice vendors. Bonus: They take craft cocktails seriously here. LALLA French owner Laetitia Trouillet crafts chic handbags—think studded leather clutches—and accessories at this boutique in the hip Guéliz district. Her bags, scarves and headbands make wonderful gifts for friends back home.
DAR MOHA This restaurant was once the home of French designer Pierre Balmain. I like to sit by the pool, but all the rooms are charming. There is a set menu with many courses of Moroccan food, so be prepared for a feast.
MAISON DU KAFTAN Perhaps no article of clothing conjures images of Morocco quite like the free-flowing kaftan. Also located in the medina, this store is stocked with versions of the garment in all colors, styles and price ranges.
BELDI COUNTRY CLUB If you need a peaceful respite from the commotion of the souk, you can’t beat this place for a leisurely swim or a spa treatment. Grab a French-style lunch by the pool—the salade nicoise is divine!

ARTFUL LODGER Jasper Conran has designed women’s fashion, menswear, accessories and home goods, but he’s never attached his name and aesthetic to a hotel—until now. L’Hôtel Marrakech is the British designer’s first foray into luxury lodging. “Opening a hotel has brought together all that I enjoy working on the most: food, textiles, interiors and gardens,” he says. Located in a 19th-century riad (a traditional Moroccan dwelling with an interior courtyard) in the heart of the medina, the otherworldly retreat combines modern-day amenities with oldfashioned glamour. “Marrakesh is a city of amazing contrasts where one can wander along dark alleys and emerge into exquisite gardens and beautiful courtyards,” he says. “I wanted to make L’Hôtel Marrakech a comfortable home, where people feel immediately welcome and happy.” l-hotelmarrakech.com
3 a la mode A half century ago, the desert city of Marrakesh cast a spell over fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, forever influencing his work. To honor that legacy, the long-awaited Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, designed by Studio KO, will open its doors in October. Located on the street bearing his name near the Jardin Marjorelle—the legendary garden that he and longtime partner Pierre Bergé saved from development in 1980—the museum will feature permanent and rotating exhibitions as well as a library, café and restaurant. “This city deeply influenced Yves’ life and work, particularly his discovery of color,” says Bergé. “The Studio KO architects share this passion for Marrakesh and their clean, uncluttered style recalls his work.”

4 HALLO BERLIN!
German architect Gisbert Pöppler has crafted sophisticated, jewel-box spaces throughout Berlin during his 20-year career. Over the years, he’s cultivated a number of favorite haunts throughout the art-centric city. Below, he shares a few picks. gisbertpoeppler.com
Emperor Wilhelm II, and its garden is a calming hideaway in the middle of the city.
8:30 a.m. I love starting the day with breakfast in the Wintergarten café at Literaturhaus Berlin. The villa was built in 1889, during the reign of
2 p.m. I stop by Trouvé-Berlin for a little treasure hunting. This vintage furniture store is dedicated to French and Italian design of the 20th century.
10 a.m. Head to Berlinische Galerie (shown above), a new museum whose primary collection is composed of art produced in the city, spanning from 1870 to present-day. 12 p.m. Hunger strikes, so I pop into Salumeria Lamuri, a casual Italian restaurant located in the Kreuzberg neighborhood. It’s my favorite intimate spot for a satisfying lunch with a good glass of wine.
5
3 p.m. For treasure of a different sort, visit René Talmon l’Armée’s shop. The jewelry designer makes beautiful pieces using 18-karat gold, oxidized silver and naturally colored diamonds. 4 p.m. To get a sense of Berlin’s decadence in the 1920s, check out the museum at the LiebermannVilla. German painter Max Liebermann’s old summer residence by Lake Wannsee holds many of the artist’s paintings and has an impressive garden. 7 p.m. Briefmarken Weine is a low-key wine bar that occupies a former East German storefront— its neon sign “Briefmarken” translates to “stamps.” With amazing pasta, antipasto and wine, it’s the perfect spot to end the day.
AGAINST THE GRAIN
File this one under happy accidents: Cologne-based designer Meike Harde was staining fabric when some of the pigment spilled onto her wooden worktop, leaving streaks of bold color to run along the grain of the surface. In that moment, her Wooden Aquarelle project was born. Based on a technique once used by German Expressionist painters, Harde’s process of applying color to wood is random, so no two panels are alike. With their intense hues and soft transitions, the panels resemble dreamy, hypnotic watercolors. When applied to furnishings, like the triangular nesting tables seen here, the effect is mesmerizing. meikeharde.com

LOCAL FLAVOR Nearly 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German city has enjoyed a renewed reputation as a decadent and cosmopolitan hub for the international art and design scene, and many of its unique hotels reflect that vibe. Here, we present four urban retreats that cater to individualized style.

SHANGHAI SURPRISE
There’s no shortage of personality in Jamie Drake’s glamorous, modern, color-saturated interiors. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the celebrated New York designer also has a reputation for being quite the bon vivant. What better insider to share his idea of a perfect day in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai? drakeanderson.com 7:30 a.m. Rise and shine at The Peninsula hotel located right on The Bund, the famed waterfront promenade. Enjoy the view of the new city of Pudong across the Huangpu River. From here, I can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, an awesome 1,535-foot spire that looks like it came right off the pages of a futuristic comic book. 8:30 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the lobby, the hotel’s airy and spacious hub. The smoked salmon with a single scrambled egg is perfect, and the breads and pastries from the buffet are hard to resist; though, I do try to limit myself. 10 a.m. I always make time after breakfast for a relaxed morning walk along The Bund to admire the city. It’s a good way to get revved up for the day ahead, and it’s the best time to avoid the massive crowds that descend on the area at

lunchtime. With so many different types of buildings, the neighborhood is a living museum of architectural styles. 12:30 p.m. Off to the Longhua Pagoda and Temple. It features a vegetarian restaurant, which is quite common for an active Buddhist temple. The superb main course is a soup bowl filled with carefully prepared garden delights and noodles. In the nearby entry area, school children learn how to make dumplings. 2 p.m. After lunch, tour the pagoda and temple with one of the monks as a guide. The multiple buildings are filled with spectacular carved and gilded deities. I’m in awe of one of the halls in particular; it’s filled with 500 golden statues. My kind of army—peace-loving and glittering! 3 p.m. Check out more furniture showrooms in the design district around Jiangning Road. Some of the wares are eye-poppingly over-the-top, but there are a few quieter, modern offerings as well. 5:30 p.m. Sneak back to the hotel for a muchneeded rest and pre-dinner nap. 8 p.m. If you grow weary of Asian food, opt for French food at the sensational bistro Franck, located in the French Concession neighborhood.
By this time, a martini up with a twist is sorely needed, and much enjoyed. When I’m there, I order a traditional Gallic meal and wash it down with a light Beaujolais. For dessert: rich and decadent chocolate mousse. 10:45 p.m. Lights out—until the next time. Xie Xie!

INSIDE STORY For over 20 years, Kerry Phelan has been a leading force in the Melbourne design scene, creating elegant spaces that are understated but luxurious. Here, she gives us the scoop on her effortlessly hip hometown. kpdo.com
What quality makes Melbourne design unique? Melbourne has a different feel than Sydney. It has a colder climate, and it’s moodier; whereas, Sydney is all about the sunshine and the harbor. Our design always nods to our natural environment. Why do you think the city is having a moment? The influx of a lot of new restaurants, cafés and bars has given designers a chance to be more adventurous. Also, the residential property market is extremely competitive—developers not only employ designers as a marketing tool, but also to promote a Melbourne lifestyle. Finally, there’s Instagram, which is creating its own, universal visual language, bringing Australian design to an international audience.
DRAMATIC TURN Sydney designer Greg Natale, known for his fondness of bold colors and geometric patterns, has won international acclaim for his tailored, sophisticated interiors. Read on for his take on design in the land down under. gregnatale.com What sets Australian design apart? I think our geography has helped to create our own “international” style. We’re influenced by our traditional European roots, but we also admire the creativity and industriousness of America. Factor in our proximity to Asia and our mild climate, and you can see how Australian design has evolved into its own thing.
the Art Gallery of New South Wales, which is next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, which is nestled on the shores of Sydney Harbor. It may sound clichéd, but if you’re ever in town, you must visit the Sydney Opera House to see a show and take in the amazing architecture by Jørn Utzon.
Favorite Aussie designers past and present: I am a big admirer of the late architect Harry Seidler. His work was ahead of its time and his career spanned many decades. His projects weren’t always warmly received, but his provocative work defined a style and an era of Australian architecture.
Dream project: I would love to try my hand at a private jet—who wouldn’t! There’s a challenge in creating a chic interior with so many restrictions on space and functionality.
Must-see sites when visiting Sydney: As an art lover, I always make sure to drop into
LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 193
Favorite local design brands: Chris Connell Design is brilliant for all things furniture, product, interiors and architecture; he’s been a driving force over the last 25 years for original design. And Bruce Rowe from Anchor Ceramics does phenomenal sculpture and planter vessels.
Up next: I recently launched a collection of decorative glass mosaic tiles with Italian brand Bisazza. I also did a new collection of hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk rugs, and I’ve got new housewares out later this year.

+G ive yourself plenty of time between tastings to take in the scenery. I highly recommend a driver and no more than three wineries per day. + Napa is a year-round destination. However, if you want to avoid the crowds, come some time between December and April. + The local community is welcoming, passionate and eager to share knowledge of wine and the area. Embrace the people and the culture.

s vice president of operations Sileshi Mengiste tells it, “Bardessono is built upon the possibility of an intelligent exchange between traveler and host. Service, surroundings and intention define an experience every guest will come to know as uniquely their own.” Since it opened in 2009, the architecturally stunning, prominently placed hotel, spa and restaurant has become known for having it all. Bardessono partners with local art galleries and wineries to provide guests with exclusive experiences, and it boasts an entire program—including the “Bone Appetite Menu”—for pets joining their owners. The on-site restaurant, Lucy Restaurant & Bar, has become a favorite among Napa Valley locals and repeat visitors alike, and its adjoining garden inspires the seasonal menus. In addition to all of this, the spa is not to be overlooked. “We offer an array of spa, styling and makeup services,” Mengiste says. “All of our rooms and suites enable guests to enjoy spa treatments from the comfort of their room.” As it provides guests with this impressive variety of accommodations, Bardessono accomplishes something else behind the scenes—“deep green” living. “We are one of only seven LEED Platinum-rated hotels in the world,” Mengiste says. From materials to ongoing initiatives, Bardessono’s structure and the practices its staff follows within it exercise care for the natural world. Speaking to the clientele, Mengiste says, “Our guests enjoy luxury travel experiences, sought-after food, wine and spirits, and high service levels. They are also ecologically conscious.”

aving spent his teenage years and early adulthood living in Austria, Christopher Hill was struck, upon arriving in St. Helena, by the similarities between California’s wine country and Austria’s southern wine region, which surrounds the city of Graz. “I was charmed by the geographical and small-town likeness to my home in southern Austria,” he says. “The cultural connection and opportunity to bring artists from Europe to Napa Valley intrigued me.” The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Hill’s namesake establishment, The Christopher Hill Gallery, offers finely curated art from local, national and international artists through its two locations: St. Helena and Healdsburg. In addition to an array of stunning, world-class artistic works, the galleries offer an ambience of comfort, community and inspiration for locals and visitors, collectors and first-time purchasers alike. “The gallery visitor will hopefully be impressed by the low-pressure, yet highly informative dynamic our staff is instructed to create,” he says. “Fundamentally, the acquisition of art should be rewarding to the client personally and visually. Whereas the majority of galleries function within a prescribed comfort zone of aesthetic, which is often based on trends, the goal of The Christopher Hill Gallery is to represent well-executed art covering a broad span of expression, from contemporary to traditional, with the caveat being consistent execution by the represented artists.”

“There is a deep sense of heritage here, matched by a spirit of discovery.”
“The incredible climate in Napa Valley, with its low humidity, sun-drenched days and cool, crisp nights, is beloved by wine grapes and travelers alike,” Torres says. And the Trinchero team concurs. “We never grow tired of the bucolic scenery: the mountains and valleys, and the rows of vines cascading across the hillsides. And fresh, local food—whether at the farmer’s market or our incredible restaurants—is elevated to an art form. There is simply no place in North America that matches the natural beauty, and food and wine culture of Napa Valley.”
W
hen Italian immigrant Mario Trinchero journeyed from New York City to Napa Valley in 1948, he couldn’t possibly have imagined what his humble dream would become. Nearly 70 years later, the Trinchero family has been crafting wine in Napa Valley for three generations. Created as an extension of the family’s home, the recently unveiled Trinchero Napa Valley Tasting Room welcomes visitors for an intimate wine and food experience in the heart of Napa Valley, just north of the town of St. Helena. Guests can relax by two stone fireplaces, soak in the stunning vineyard views and taste the winery’s Bordeaux-style singlevineyard selections, crafted from the family’s sustainably farmed estate vineyards. “We patiently watch over our own vines, farming each block by hand and guiding our fruit to the pinnacle of its potential,” winemaker Mario Monticelli explains. The new tasting room blends a modern aesthetic with impressive heritage, echoing the meticulous detail and unwavering passion that goes into each bottle of wine. Visitors to Trinchero Napa Valley—one of the few family-owned wineries left in the region—can expect a personalized, luxury experience. “For a moment, our guests become part of the thread that weaves through our vineyards and our barrels, gaining a behind-the-scenes view of Napa winemaking in our exclusive seminars and guided tours,” company principal Bob Torres says.

From sourcing furniture one would find in a beautiful residence, to sharing every detail about the wine country region with its guests, the hotel strives to create a luxurious, inviting and relaxing environment. “We want to share that local experience with you,” owner and operator Mark Hoffmeister says. “We will tell you our favorite wineries and restaurants, as well as where we like to go for a walk or bike ride. We have a family atmosphere, which extends to our guests, employees and community.” A full-service hotel, Wydown offers an array of first-class amenities and a front desk that is open 24 hours, which comes in handy for a clientele Hoffmeister describes as diverse and active. “We have visitors of all ages and from all over the world,” he says. “The one common thread we see is that our guests appreciate the more intimate, yet contemporary, approach of the hotel. They love our Main Street location, as they are continuously out and about, exploring wine country.” As for the locals, Hoffmeister notes a collectively creative nature and balanced lifestyle. Whether they are involved in a winery, a hotel, a restaurant or an art studio, the residents of wine country exude a passion for their dreams and a desire to enjoy family, work, friends and health in equal measure.

WHEN TO VISIT September/October: “This is harvest, the most active time of the year,” Hoffmeister says. “There are tons of harvest parties and events, and the valley is buzzing. The weather is perfect.” February/March: “The region is quieter, and everything is more accessible,” Hoffmeister says. “Restaurants are easier to get into, wineries are less crowded, hotels can be less expensive and you get a better feel of what it’s like to live here. This is my favorite time of the year.”

MODERN OUTLOOK VIEWS AND HUES OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN INSPIRE THE UPDATED INTERIORS OF A SAN FRANCISCO HOME. WRITTEN BY MINDY PANTIEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRIK ARGAST

esigner Martha Angus isn’t afraid of color. And her strategic wielding of bright and saturated hues within sophisticated yet playful spaces was a perfect fit for one family when they decided to update their traditional San Francisco home with a modern interior. “The clients’ openness to color and pattern allowed us to create cheerful, fresh spaces reflective of their sunny outlook and youthful perspective,” says Angus, who worked with senior designer Ericka Catanzaro and design director Katie McCaffrey. In the structure’s foyer, for instance, the designers displayed graphic neon yellow and orange artwork and a table skirted with a bold geometric pattern in similar hues. The latter, which was designed as a coat check and doubles as a fort for the owners’ two young sons, is a fitting first look into the lifestyle of the people who live there and of the whimsical style to follow. “The driving element of the design,” says Angus, “was to create a home that was easy to live in and fun.”

Designer Martha Angus and architects Lewis Butler and Dave Sturm gave the interiors of a San Francisco residence a modern update. In the entry, Angus and her associates Ericka Catanzaro and Katie McCaffrey created a custom coat-check console with a skirt made with vibrant China Seas fabric. To start the update, the owners first called on architects Lewis Butler and Dave Sturm. The couple wanted to maintain the structure’s traditional façade in keeping with the neighborhood but update the inside with a modern lean. With that in mind, the architects deleted the decorative moldings and reworked the awkward floor plan by taking down walls on the existing main level to create one clean, flowing space. “The idea of a formal floor plan is associated with the city,” says Butler, a principal with the firm. “However, here, we looked for a different factor to drive the floor plan, which was the view and a feeling of light and openness. We abandoned the concept of a traditional city floor plan and created a single space for living. It feels like a vacation house in the city.” When it came to aesthetic changes, Sturm, who acted as project architect, says, “the clients definitely wanted a more contemporary look, but they specifically requested
not going hard-edged modern.” To that end, the architects balanced newly simplified millwork with warm materials such as wide-plank brushed-oak floors. “The existing floor was traditional thin strips of maple with a border,” says Sturm. “The new one has a waxlike finish that makes it feel more relaxed and beachy.” That transitional approach continues in the kitchen, which the architects remodeled in collaboration with Angus, as well. “The painted cabinets have a border frame with integral pulls, so they are updated but not totally streamlined,” adds Sturm. In addition to opening up the floor plan, the architects also opened up the structure’s views to the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. Large expanses of glass emerged as a critical design element, and as builder Sarah Holmes can attest, getting the outsize windows situated on the back of the narrow property was no easy feat. “With so little space to maneuver, everything from hauling dirt to pouring

concrete had to be done in phases,” says Holmes, who worked with superintendent Matt Lombardi on the project. “To get the windows in place required a partial street closure and a large crane to move the glass over the top of the house.” Against the updated backdrop, Angus and her associates created interiors marked by a soft neutral palette punctuated with a kaleidoscope of colorful accents that reflect the majestic surroundings and the wife’s affection for bold pattern and cheerful hues. “I love wearing bright colors,” says the wife. “And I wanted the house to feel alive and energetic.” After establishing a sense of vibrancy in the entry, the design trio chose vivid versions of ocean hues to highlight the open living, dining and kitchen areas.

“The water is so captivating that we went with vibrant greens and saturated blues,” says McCaffrey of the bright grassy seat cushions in the breakfast area and the deep aqua chairs and pillows in the adjacent living area. To help visually delineate the various areas within the space, the designers used area rugs and lighting strategically. In the living area, for example, the sandycolored jute floor covering anchors the space, while a round striped rug provides an outline for the Saarinen table in the kitchen’s breakfast area. “When you have no walls, rugs provide the place markers,” says Catanzaro, also noting that the dandelion-like metal pendant with a silver-leaf interior firmly differentiates the formal dining area from its more casual counterpart across the way.

On the opposite side of the entry at the front of the house, the family room boasts an eye-popping orange zigzag rug that spawned like-colored pillows and ottomans. “We were no longer facing the ocean, so we used it as an opportunity to do something more playful while tying back to the entry,” says McCaffrey. White built-in bookshelves flank a fireplace framed with oak siding. Contrasting with the wood, a commissioned piece of art supplies a pop of hot pink and conceals a television. Upstairs, the focus turns back to the spectacular vista, and the master suite assumes a spa-like atmosphere. According to Catanzaro, the wallcovering that backs the bed and the stone floor of the adjacent bathroom were both selected for their wood-like appearance.
“The bedroom wallpaper and bathroom stone both look like wood grains with taupe-gray finishes resembling driftwood,” she says of the spaces connected by an oversize glass door. The serene feeling established in both areas creates the perfect backdrop for views out to the water and the Golden Gate Bridge, which is also visible from the bathroom’s freestanding tub. But as the homeowner good-naturedly admits, her two sons often end up being the recipients of that peaceful view. “They get to use that wonderful soaking tub more than I do,” she says. Even so, she and her husband make a point of scheduling early evening baths for the boys. “That way,” says the wife, “we can keep an eye on the kids and still enjoy the sunsets.”

A
fter working with clay for 10 years, creating functional vessels on a potter’s wheel, Berkeley-based Erin McGuiness experienced a creative turning point. “I took a one-day workshop in San Francisco,” McGuiness says of the class she attended nearly 15 years ago that taught her to hand-coil pottery. “I had been trying to make certain types of forms, but I couldn’t. Once I learned this technique, it opened up a whole new avenue of working.” The technique she learned and still uses to create her pieces today involves spiraling three to five coils, which look like “snakes of rolled-out clay,” to build the vessel’s side walls. She then shapes and compresses the clay with wooden tools and metal ribs. From there, she lets the piece set and harden, before going back to refine the shape and build onto it. “With traditional vessels, there are a lot of similarly shaped proportions that are based on Chinese forms from thousands of years ago,” she says. “I like to take what might feel familiar and then do something unexpected to it so it feels new.” While McGuiness still crafts vessels, which are offered through De Sousa Hughes, she leverages the freedom afforded by coiling to create them in new shapes. “I like to stretch the clay almost to the edge of not being balanced and create silhouettes that go beyond a traditional shape,” explains the artist, who previously sketched her ideas on a blackboard, but now prefers a more organic approach. “I’ve started to be really present with the piece as I make it, so I’m really interacting with the form, feeling and seeing where I want it to go next as it grows slowly.” To keep the focus on these unique forms, McGuiness adheres to a monochromatic palette, finishing her vessels in either a porcelain white slip or a dark iron wash with a bit of a metallic sheen.

LX_SF17_SM_McGuiness.indd 226
6/1/17 5:49 PM
While the singular shapes are predominately attributed to the hand-coiling technique, McGuiness can also trace some influences back to her youth. Growing up outside of Washington, D.C., McGuiness spent many weekends as a teen exploring the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery along with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, which are all connected by a tunnel. “I remember going underground from one to the other, and seeing really refined, elegant Chinese pottery and wabi-sabi Japanese tea bowls and then these beautiful, round hand-coiled vessels on the African side,” she recalls, noting that the different aesthetics bubble up into her work today. “I think those seeds were planted way back then, when I was first becoming interested in clay and walking between those museums.”
Two years ago, once again, McGuiness found herself itching to break new ground and headed to an artist residency in Greece, where she developed her most recent body of work. Instead of coiling, the artist carves her latest sculptures—resembling bones, vertebrae and other found natural objects—from a block of clay. The process is an intuitive one, and she discovers the form as she goes, excavating the clay until it arrives at a place that just feels right. This newly discovered work has invigorated her studio, and McGuiness has even started translating the language of these carved sculptures into a line of jewelry and a capsule lighting collection. “I think art is a reflection of what’s happening internally,” McGuiness says. “As I’ve deepened my own experience, my work has really deepened, too.”
Once McGuiness learned to hand-coil, the artist began creating vessels with striking shapes (above, center). The technique involves building a form with thin snake-like sections of clay (above, left). A kiln (above, right) and inspirational objects (opposite, bottom right) fill the functional studio.

t’s not unusual for designers to tap into a wide variety of styles in order to put together a rich and layered interior. But as designer Jennifer Jones began working on a couple’s Noe Valley home, she found herself pulling from the far ends of the design spectrum—from classic to modern and back again—to meet her clients’ specific and unconventional tastes. “They love tufting, nailheads and traditional furniture shapes,” Jones says of the couple (he’s a software engineer; she’s a filmmaker). “But they’re also drawn to graphic elements, bold color and whimsical details. The goal for this project was to develop a glam spin on Victorian and Edwardian styles with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll.” Before Jones’ clients commissioned her to furnish the interiors of their new abode, they lived in a rental apartment in the city. “We were ready for more space and the freedom that comes with ownership, but we wanted to stay in San Francisco,” says one of the homeowners. “I love the energy, the landscape and the walkability here.” His significant other agrees, saying, “There’s so much culture and amazing food here. It’s a conflux of wonderful things that make life excellent.” The couple house-hunted for only a few days before finding the residence that would become their home. “We were immediately taken with the huge glass doors that open the living area to a dramatic view of the garden,” he says. That large expanse of transparency floods the openplan living area, dining area and kitchen with abundant sunshine. “There’s a lot of natural light, and the walls and ceilings are mostly white,” Jones says. “While the exterior is Edwardian-style, the interior architecture is clean and simple. That meant I had a blank slate to work with.” Jones kept the garden view a focal point by using an interior color palette that was clean and simple, too. Throughout the public areas as well as the bedrooms, shades of white, gray and black lend a striking but neutral backdrop for smaller doses of blue, plum and fuchsia. In the living area, the designer played off the smoky blue of the existing fire surround with a barrel chair covered with a brighter blue

velvet, a tufted white-leather ottoman and a gray-chenille sofa accented with nailhead trim. In the master bedroom, she kept the existing deep gray hue on the walls and ceiling for an intimate feel and chose a lighter gray for the guest bedroom walls, which she offset with plum pillows and tufted stools. In addition to bursts of color, the designer piqued interest with layers of rich texture. “If I didn’t use different textures, the design would be flat and too traditional,” Jones says. “I placed a faux-shagreen mirror in the entry and a custom sideboard with hammered stainless-steel panels in the living area.” A custom silk-shag rug and velvet-upholstered bed continue the tactile palette into the master bedroom, where the designer hung draperies made with an embroidered cotton-linen blend. “A glass chandelier adds a dash of glam to the dining area, where I did traditional-style chairs covered with linen and detailed with nailhead trim,” the designer says. “All of those things play off each other and exude opulence without being too showy.” Without crossing the line into flashy, Jones still managed to punctuate the interior with plenty of idiosyncratic elements that speak to her clients’ singular tastes and personalities. “I designed one space as a game room because they love to entertain and have an extensive collection of board games,” says the designer, who wrapped the space with a Trove wallpaper depicting birds taking flight. “It was perfect for these clients, as she has interests ranging from taxidermy to falconry. I also hung textured metal sconces designed by Kelly Wearstler that look like little glowing bird nests.” For the filmmaker’s office, Jones painted the walls a moody shade of blue and designed a custom Murphy bed before further outfitting the space with a drafting table, a vintage clock and the client’s own taxidermy chicken. “I wanted her office to be dramatic,” Jones says. “She loves collecting curiosities and quirky things.” As with the interiors, the design for the landscape is notably graphic. “We were inspired by the geometric quality of the house and its interior design and wanted the garden to reinforce that,” says landscape designer Julie Swift. “We kept the existing lawn and put in olive trees, which were trimmed into round shapes.” Swift also formed bay trees into pyramids and gave hedges along the fence flat tops for a linear look. The whimsical elements both inside and outside add to the dwelling’s individuality, perfectly reflecting its owners. “We are very playful,” the filmmaker says. “We like splashes of color, modern pieces and things from the 1920s. Most importantly, we didn’t want a home that was boring.” The design Jones delivered is anything but that. “This house exudes their personalities and eclectic styles,” the designer says. “Using their interests as a starting point rather than an afterthought was the key to creating a space that feels cohesive and expressive.” luxesource.com / 231

or Jen and Adam Wallach, the prospect of moving from San Francisco to the suburban town of Alamo in the East Bay was enticing, but not without its challenges. They were glad to do away with Adam’s daily commute, but they were less excited about the housing options. Personally, the area lacked the contemporary midcentury style of architecture they were drawn to, and they had a hard time finding a home that would meet both their functional and aesthetic needs. After a few years of looking, however, things changed with a visit to a midcentury modern residence near Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. “The house had been remodeled several times and felt stark inside, but it had an abundance of natural light, a good floor plan and an indooroutdoor feel,” Jen says. “We were drawn to its potential.”
LX_SF17_HOM_Wallach_14_.indd 241
To maximize that potential, the couple brought in designer Melissa Winn, builder Jim Wood and architect Guy Ayers, who had renovated the home for the previous owner. “Guy specializes in midcentury remodels and is extremely knowledgeable,” Jen says. “We knew working with him would make things go as seamlessly as possible.” The architect’s experience with the residence, which was extensive, proved to be a helpful reference point. “In the previous remodel, we stripped the house to its framing, added the master suite, converted the northeast bedroom to a family room, remodeled the kitchen and baths and replaced all of the windows,” the architect says. This time around, the owners aimed for a multiphase update. Working closely with Winn and Wood, they started with the interiors. New built-in walnut cabinetry was added
To warm up the kitchen’s existing white cabinetry, designer Melissa Winn created a built-in seating nook crafted of horizontal cedar. The wood was supplied by Dolan’s Lumber, and the nook was fabricated by Dimensions Unlimited.

The living room is oriented around and influenced by the home’s original built-in copper fireplace. An eclectic mix of furnishings includes an RH coffee table, vintage Westnofa chairs and layered Turkish kilims. The homeowner commissioned the metal swing chair.

throughout the house, old skylights were replaced and the walls received a fresh coat of paint. Inspired by the tongue-and-groove cedar that appeared under the exterior soffits in places, Winn incorporated more of the warm wood throughout the interiors. “To help bring the house back to its roots, we added cedar to the ceilings in the living and dining rooms and down the hall, which includes a hidden door to the master,” she explains. Another significant cedar element, a built-in cabinet system and seating nook the designer created to enhance the kitchen area, helps soften the crisp whiteness of the room’s existing cabinetry. When it came to furnishings, Jen selected most of the individual pieces and collaborated closely with Winn on the furniture layout and scale. “I have a passion for interior design, and I had put together a binder of images and clippings I’d collected for what I consider our ‘forever’ home,” Jen says. “We used that for inspiration and at the same time tried to find a balance between my tastes, which are eclectic, and my husband’s, which lean a little more toward contemporary.” In the living room, color and texture choices were influenced by the structure’s original copper fireplace. “The owners like warmer hues, such as reds, pinks and oranges,” Winn says. “With the organic shape and color of the fireplace as a focal point, we were able to organize complementary mixed-material furnishings in the space.” Two vintage Siesta chairs by Westnofa, for example, pair with a hefty coffee table topped with reclaimed French floorboards and a contemporary Dellarobbia sofa. A collection of thoughtfully layered antique Turkish kilims and a custom steel swing chair, which Jen had commissioned, add a final layer of personality to the space. The personal touches continue in the later architectural updates as well. “The owners wanted to do things in a creative way—they paid attention to details,” says Wood, noting the cabinetry design and the pivoting front door, which goes along with a new two-car garage to revamp the façade. “The attached garage was built to look like it was part of the original house,” says Ayers, adding, “We pushed the garage forward, which created some depth and interest to the front entry.” The architect oversaw the new addition and reconfigured the existing one-car garage into an office and then added a new wine cellar and mudroom in place of the old driveway.

Behind the home, the Wallachs overhauled the yard as well to encourage an indoor-outdoor lifestyle for their family. Just off the living room, a paved sitting area was covered with a steel-and-cedar roof and appointed with a sectional from Caluco’s Cozy collection. Farther back in the yard sits one of artist Jayson Fann’s Spirit Nest Creations, which was built on-site out of 4,000 pounds of intertwined eucalyptus branches. “First and foremost, it’s a beautiful piece of art that we look at every day,” Jen says of the piece. “But it’s also functional art, in that the adults and kids can sit or play in it and enjoy it.” The Nest, together with the other singular elements both inside and outside, add up to create a home that’s a direct expression of its owners. “Not only do I love the finished product, but I love the stories behind each piece,” Jen says. “We knew this house would require work, but in the end, it’s everything we hoped for.”

TOM TAYLOR + MAURICE LOMBARDO Taylor Lombardo Architects 40 Hotaling Place San Francisco, California 415.433.7777 info@taylorlombardo.com taylorlombardo.com
Tom Taylor and Maurice Lombardo have been working together for more than 33 years. The architects each knew the profession for which they had a passion from an early age, and after pursuing stellar educations in the field, they found themselves working at the same premier firm. Today, they run their own namesake establishment, Taylor Lombardo Architects. Specializing in high-end residential and winery design, the firm calls San Francisco home. Taylor, Lombardo and their team strive for excellence in all components of the practice, from management and team building to construction expertise and client relationships. With client satisfaction as the ultimate goal of each project, they work toward an understanding of the homeowners’ preferences and needs before beginning the design process, which involves hand-drawn sketches, attention to detail and a thoughtful use of materials and site.
We get to work in beautiful places with extraordinary people. We are dedicated to making every project great.
Milestones in your firm’s success? Lombardo: Becoming established as Taylor Lombardo Architects in 2004 and working on several high-profile wineries, such as Nickel & Nickel, Silver Oak Cellars, Coppola Winery and Presqu’ile Winery. One thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? Taylor: I am a really good cook, and sometimes I will open up a bottle of wine and make a gourmet meal in the middle of the night, just for myself. What drives you professionally? Lombardo: To be the best at what I do. Tom and I are both extremely fortunate to have found a profession that we enjoy and in which we excel. Dream creative project? Taylor: A combination winery and residential project is our expertise, and we have the opportunity to do quite a few of these. I would love to be offered the chance to work on a museum or public building. Motto you live by? Taylor: It’s never too late to make something better. Lombardo: Live each day as if it were your last.
Recently completed LEED Platinum modern residence in Pacific Heights, San Francisco.

What are your design pet peeves? Why? Taylor: Attitude and stagnation. We should never be so full of ourselves that we aren’t open to new ideas, but we should also be smart enough to know which ones can work. Lombardo: Having a signature style. Too many architects are recognized by their one style. It starts to all look the same after a while and becomes redundant.

AMY WEAVER Weaver Design Group 1055 California Street San Francisco, California 510.829.2594 amy@amyweaverdesign.com amyweaverdesign.com
Amy Weaver’s history speaks to an inherent love of design. Interested in drawing, painting and an array of other creative pursuits as a child, Weaver went to college for textiles and marketing. “After college, I entered a retail training program,” she says. “Then, in 1992, I was asked to participate in a decorator’s showcase after a well-known designer saw my home.” Weaver has been involved in the world of residential design ever since, going on 25 years. Speaking to what she most loves about her field, Weaver points to the opportunity to travel, the interesting people she meets and learning something new on a daily basis. Driven to make each client happy and guided by her motto, “Your home should be your sanctuary and reflect your personality, not mine,” Weaver advises homeowners to be specific about their intentions. “When you hire someone whose work you love, be specific about how it makes you feel,” she says. “Is it the color, texture or the way they understand scale?”
The use of color and layering is important in making a home feel alive.
Milestones in your firm’s success? We are refurbishing the Marin Cancer Care center and creating a new, fresh and exciting space for its patients. Giving back to the community is a highlight for our firm. One thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? In second grade, I was a Girl Scouts Brownie. When we went to the leader’s house, I wanted to redesign it. Dream creative project? A beautiful pied-à-terre in Sonoma County, Napa Valley or Italy. What are your design pet peeves? Why? A room without personal effects. Books, photos, art—these all tell a story regarding the personality of the homeowner. Favorite store to shop? Where is it, and why is it your favorite? Artefact Design & Salvage in Sonoma. It carries both outdoor and indoor ideas from all over the world. I would really recommend it to anyone wanting a pop of surprise in their home.
A FEW OF WEAVER’S FAVORITES Food: Mexican Season: Spring Music: Motown Flower: Pink peony Vacation spot: Il Pellicano in Italy The bones of this beautiful Victorian home are fantastic. The furniture, selected by Weaver and her team, accentuates the contrast to the ornate built-ins through restrained lines, quiet color palettes and subtle textures.

INSPIRATION FOUND
VIVA HAVANA! WHILE DECADES HAVE PASSED SINCE CUBA’S INITIAL TOURISM HEYDAY, THE TIMEWORN YET ELEGANT NATION—STILL RIFE WITH CULTURAL AND EXOTIC ALLURE— IS ONCE AGAIN MAKING WAVES AS THE TOP DESTINATION ON EVERYONE’S TRAVEL LIST. BEREFT OF MODERN INTRUSION, THE COUNTRY’S CAPITAL CITY HAS UNDERGONE LITTLE CHANGE IN EITHER ATMOSPHERE OR ARCHITECTURE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND THE WAY THAT IT CAPTURES A MOMENT IN TIME BRINGS ABOUT A FASCINATING SENSE OF BEAUTY AND INTRIGUE. THE ITEMS FOUND ON THIS PAGE CELEBRATE THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND TROPICAL SETTING OF THIS REINVIGORATED ISLAND. Clockwise from top right: Charlotte / $6.90 per tile / cementtileshop.com. Interiors of the Palacio Cantero Museum in Trinidad, Cuba. Niceia Chinese Pot / $595 / vistaalegre.com.
