We present a special compilation of talented design professionals whose dynamic work has been featured over the past year in the pages of our magazine.

ON THE COVER: Residential designer Jennifer Lee and designer Mary Jo Fiorella created a Menlo Park house where there are few barriers between the inside and the outside. A seethrough staircase and low-slung furniture— including an RH sofa, Stark rug and a Nuevo coffee table—do little to block the view through the wall of glass to the backyard. Page 190

EDITOR’S LETTER

W

ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES

LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.

ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE

Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”

WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD

▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES

Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”

LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68

Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER

San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”

SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲

Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”

⊳ KATIE TARATSAS

Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”

LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲

Atlanta | gordondunning.com

Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN

Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look

LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76

at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH

The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”

LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78

The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina

Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

SAVE the DATE “UNTITLED, ART SAN FRANCISCO”

BRAND VAN EGMOND

For more than 30 years, Netherlands-based lighting atelier Brand van Egmond has been delighting clients with its headturning lighting sculptures, each a work of handcrafted art. From its first breakthrough project—a dazzling chandelier for the green room at the Academy Awards—to lighting for Louis Vuitton, Saks Fifth Avenue and private residences, Brand van Egmond is never short on creativity. After opening dedicated showrooms in Europe and Asia, the company now has its first in the U.S. at the San Francisco Design Center. “We find a large amount of interest for our handcrafted lighting on the West Coast,” says founder and designer William Brand. “California, and in particular the Bay Area, is clearly the focal point of a huge amount of creativity, with a keen interest in new designs.” The new gallery, realized under Brand’s vision, is a minimalist black and white space designed to showcase the splendor of Brand van Egmond’s new and established lighting designs. “Every collection I create comes with a story and is based on a specific request from somewhere around the world,” he says. Lighting from any collection can be customized, with Brand’s training as an architect informing his work. “I look at how the energy is divided in a space, and how objects in a room relate to each other and evoke a certain emotion,” he says. “I am not a stylist but more an alchemist, trying to go toward uncharted territory in order to create something that is more than just a combination of matching colors and materials.” brandvanegmond.com 082 / luxesource.com

BLUEPRINT THE CLANCY

Following a $30 million renovation, the former Courtyard San Francisco Downtown received a redesign and new name: The Clancy. The 410-room boutique hotel, part of Marriott’s luxury Autograph Collection series, was reimagined by EDG Interior Architecture + Design. “The Clancy is a celebration of the best of SoMa, where tech converges with a bohemian energy. A bold personality, high-concept creativity and ultra-modernism show guests and locals we’re not afraid to be daring,” says EDG president and CEO Jennifer Johanson. EDG partnered with local creatives on spaces throughout, such as the central courtyard which features a street art-inspired mural by artist Ian Ross. marriott.com/hotels

DESIGN MINDED

THREE BAY AREA LIGHTING DESIGNERS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE POWER OF ILLUMINATION.

“Architectural lighting is essential to the comfort of our built environments. It provides for safe nighttime activities and can create beauty by accentuating architectural features and personal artifacts. Small-scale and low-wattage LED light sources can provide great artistic freedom to a lighting designer. The lighting effects can be very interesting and move beyond traditional lighting solutions.”

“The tools we have to work with continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Fixtures have become smaller, outputs have increased, and controls are smarter. This allows more opportunities to integrate lighting into the architecture. Knowing how to use sources and controls to our advantage is critical.”

wine, dine, DESIGN AVOW NAPA

Historic downtown Napa recently welcomed Avow Napa, a restaurant, lounge and bar at 813 Main Street that is bound to delight foodies, oenophiles and design lovers alike. The ultra-stylish spot is a labor of love for owner Joe Wagner, a fifth-generation vintner who owns his own winery, Copper Cane Wines & Provisions. Upon purchasing the iconic 1908 Renaissance Revival building, formerly Fagiani’s bar, Wagner enlisted preservation experts Architectural Resources Group and design firm Brayton Hughes Design Studios to give it a style refresh while honoring the building’s history. The exterior tile façade was removed to reveal the structure’s original storefront windows, visually connecting the first-floor bar area to thriving downtown Napa. Two arched windows were also added on the second level. The tri-level building was opened up to make the spaces flexible and dynamic, providing a more effervescent experience. Guests can enjoy a glass of wine in the swanky lounge, dine in elegant channel-tufted leather booths under a crystal chandelier, then head to the top-floor terrace— with Iroko wood lounge seating and custom tables— which overlooks Veterans Memorial Park. avownapa.com

COLLABORATION Drawing inspiration from nature, light and patterns, West Coast designer Kendall Wilkinson has partnered with fabric distributor Fabricut to design her first collection of indoor-outdoor textiles and trims. The new collection, which balances stainresistant durability with a comfortable, luxurious look and feel, is ideal for upholstery and window treatments, which can be color coordinated for an en suite feel. “All of the inspiration came from my travels: images, moments, sights and even sounds that resonated with me,” Wilkinson says. “My trips to Paris and Mexico significantly inspired me. A lot of the geometrical patterns stem from Paris, particularly how the light reflects and refracts on the architecture. Mexico inspired bright colors and more botanical elements.” The unique, versatile trim collection represents a completely new territory for Wilkinson creatively. “The colors, materials and design are very transitional, letting you use them boldly or subtly and integrate them flawlessly with the textiles,” she says. “I see the trim very much like the accessories for the home— the shoes or handbag!” fabricut.com

Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING

When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.

For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.

GLAM GLOW

While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

“THERE IS A TENDENCY TO STAY AWAY FROM DARK HUES FOR A TINY ROOM. WE DECIDED TO EMBRACE THE SIZE AND GO THE OPPOSITE—DARK, DRAMATIC AND MEMORABLE.” –BARBARA REYES, fredericktang.com

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN

On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN

When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME

Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com

The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com

We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com

People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com

Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

slumber PARTY

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

Ask the Expert Share your influences and inspirations. My father. He arrived in the United States in 1979, in his early 20s, dealing with the passing of his father along the way. He worked as a machinist and, in order to start his own shop, took multiple eight-hour shifts each day for years. I don’t share my father’s passion for machining, but his work ethic drives me every day.

FORMA CONSTRUCTION For more than 10 years, Forma Construction has been fostering growth. The award-winning general contractor set a record on its very first project, building the most expensive nonview home ever sold in Noe Valley. Since then, it has won an impressive range of awards, satisfied countless clients and built a portfolio that conveys its skill and collaborative ethos. Throughout this time, the company was known as MT Development, but such evolution demanded—its founder felt—a new identity. “We have focused on hiring ahead of needs and investing in people, systems and processes,” Victor Mezhvinsky says. “As a result of that approach and our incredible tenured team, we have experienced steady yet striking advancement. We wanted a new, simplified name that speaks to our core values, while reflecting the firm we are today.” And what kind is that? One that values deep relationships with its clients and partners, obsesses over bringing visions to life and endeavors to enhance the journey of creating along the way. “Our greatest success is being surrounded by authentic, creative and talented people,” Mezhvinsky says. “I am humbled by the team we have built, the homeowners who trust us and the other trade pros whose designs inspire us to build great things.”

J. FITZSIMMONS BUILDING For the team at J. Fitzsimmons Building, the act of bringing a design to life is more than nuts and bolts. Led by namesake Jeffrey Fitzsimmons, the firm has become known for going beyond the bounds of the average contractor. Informed by the Victorian influence of San Francisco and the modernity and spatial challenges of New York City, to which they’ve traveled to complete a range of successful projects, J. Fitzsimmons’ experts bring to the table an understanding of architectural vernacular. It’s a valuable asset for their prime collaborators. “As a general contractor, I feel it’s very important to work with design professionals through the entire building process,” Fitzsimmons says. “For me, this includes our full attention to and communication with the homeowner and architect throughout the entire project. Weekly site meetings, daily check-ins and the occasional end-of-day informal visit can be some of the most important moments on a project.” This is arguably especially true when executing a remodel—something J. Fitzsimmons does a lot of. Fitzsimmons and his team have made a specialty, in fact, out of the renovation of historic single-family homes in the Bay Area. Even so, they are currently working on building a residential/commercial mixed-use building, in the Mission District, from the ground up.

Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? Transformations. We recently turned a rather ordinary beige stucco home in San Francisco into an impressively designed modern house, through which the owners can finally take advantage of an amazing hilltop view of downtown. In another home, there was nothing ordinary about the brick exterior, wood-paneled entryway and grand staircase from 1906, yet we renovated the kitchen and its six bathrooms to bring some modern luxury and convenience.

AMANDA BARNES INTERIORS Asked to describe the mindset with which she enters a project, designer Amanda Barnes replies: “I’m a devoted organizer, and I feel strongly that a thoughtfully edited room lends itself to a clear mind and inspires a home that nourishes emotional well-being.” Curating functional and sophisticated spaces, the founder and principal behind Amanda Barnes Interiors has become known for a fairly neutral palette, layers of texture, greenery and the mixing of metals, wood stains and textiles. She brings it all to form with the California coastline as inspiration and the client’s lifestyle as a guiding influence. “The routines of my clients drive the decisions we make for a space,” she says. “Most of the projects we design are for young families, so we are intentional about creating rooms that look ageless and timeless regardless of how often they are utilized.” Given this highly customized approach, Barnes and her team are all about communication, from the get-go. “We emphasize that being up front about what they do not want is just as important as expressing what they like,” Barnes says. “Once we see how flexible a home should be, based on their desires and day-to-day moments, we can judiciously source pieces that will look beautiful and transition with the needs of the family.”

1

Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? I would say it’s that most of our current business comes by way of referral. Building trust and a partnership through the design journey is an important part of the experience for our clients, and it ensures an ideal result. What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Instagram is a huge source of inspiration for me. With a stream of square images, we are able to connect with others in the design community and see how trends influence design around the world. What’s next for the firm? We have been working hard on a new build in Southern California, and I can’t wait to share it. Beyond that, we have quite a few projects lined up and are happy to see where they take us.

It wasn’t long before they joined forces to found Angus McCaffrey Interior Design. Today, McCaffrey is at the helm, and the firm’s designs continue to be recognized for the balance they strike between contemporary art and period antiques. “We love all things neoclassical, and our firm has become known for layering old with new, grace with ease,” McCaffrey says. “Many of our clients seek us out because of our eye for color and curator’s approach.” They not only design beautiful interiors, but act as art consultants in the sourcing of wise investments for each space. “I feel that using the world of art as a guide and inspiration is key to keeping things forward-thinking, yet timeless,” McCaffrey says. Alongside this desire for stylistic longevity, she also aims to personalize. Whether accompanying a client to design centers and galleries, or swapping digital mood boards, McCaffrey endeavors to understand the future user of her designs completely. This, she says, is essential to the creation of spaces that are chic, highly livable and will forever surprise and delight their owners.

t’s not often that a lovely Colonial-style house is compared to a hairstyle, but the owners of this new Menlo Park home say it brings to mind the iconic 1980s coiffure, the mullet. “My husband and I both like contemporary homes, but we didn’t want this house to date itself down the line,” says the wife. “I felt like a modern take on the Colonial look would be a more timeless choice. From the front, it feels like Americana, but inside and from the back, it’s much more modern. I call it a mullet of a house—it’s business in the front and party in the back.” Step inside and you’ll find that a contemporary story unfolds. A vast wall of windows, an arresting open staircase and a moody palette of charcoal gray paired with fiery orange and pink graphically contrasts with the more classic exterior. Living room furnishings are low slung and streamlined, and no trims or tassels are in sight. “It was a bit of a challenge,” designer Mary Jo Fiorella says. “We wanted to blend a contemporary aesthetic with more traditional bones, which was a puzzle.” To retain balance and avoid a jarring disconnect, subdued architectural details and material choices refer to a more traditional aesthetic. Simple paneling was used on the walls to offer a nod to the classics without being overtly traditional. White oak floors were used throughout instead of a heavier, darker wood or concrete, and white-painted box beams crown the entry and dining room. luxesource.com / 191

“We wanted a clean look,” says residential designer Jennifer Lee. “We were drawn to a field of simple materials and mostly quiet architecture.” The kitchen is a prime example of that restrained nature. White cabinets, delicately veined marble countertops and a ceramic tile with a soft texture on the backsplash create a crisp base for contrasting details. Brass cabinet hardware and pendants with a dark finish and gold fittings add a dash of visual disparity, while rustic oak beams inject warmth in the mix. But in this house, the simple moments are offset with dramatic accents. “I usually encourage my clients to choose one or two areas for visual impact,” Lee notes. “The open stairway and the steel doors in the kitchen were our focal points here.” The pièce de résistance is the wall of steel windows with three sets of French doors. Stretching from the floor to near the ceiling, the windows act as a transparent work of art, framing the

LX_SF32_HOM_Fiorella_12.indd 192

lush view and elegantly connecting indoors and out. “In California, the weather is great all year round,” the homeowner says. “We wanted plenty of light here, but we also wanted to have a very easy way to connect this space with the pool and fire pit, it’s what our 3-year-old simply calls ‘having a party.’ Now, the outdoor space has become an extension of the kitchen.” Not to be outdone by elaborate windows and stellar views, the dining room finds its footing with a youthful yet polished mix of lively pattern and rich color. Dining chairs with graceful legs in a brass finish are upholstered in a spirited, striped velvet that is equal parts ebullient and refined. A round wood table with an oil-rubbed bronze base and graphically dark drapery and Roman shades add stark contrast to the European white oak floors. For balance, a contemporary take on a classic brass chandelier and box beams provide streamlined shots of traditional.

Built for comfort, the family room’s cool palette is warmed with wood beams and textural accessories. Fiorella incorporated streamlined built-in bookshelves and cabinets for additional storage and display on either side of a substantial yet refined marble fireplace. The loveseat is by RH, and the armchairs are by Nuevo. The painting is by Jonas Fisch.

In the dining room, a striped velvet fabric by Romo finds its muse with geometric brass chairs by Resource Decor—the combination cheerfully tempers dark window treatments from The Shade Store. A round table by Vanguard Furniture with a base of bronze was stained dark to offset European white oak floors. A brass chandelier by John-Richard, “checked all the boxes,” Fiorella notes.

“This room doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Fiorella says. “But it’s also not overly playful or patterned. The goal was to be bright and fresh, but still sophisticated. The bold color and hints of pattern against the white walls just feels warm yet modern.” Pattern makes an appearance upstairs as well, with vivacious motifs energizing bedrooms and bathrooms. In the master bedroom, a graphic ikat blue and white upholstery on a custom bronze bench was the impetus for the room— inspiring a soft-around-the-edges palette of blues and grays. A clever white oak recessed bed niche built with storage in mind serves dual purposes—offering a warm color contrast to the room’s cool hues while also integrating stealthy shelving in a space with rather challenging dimensions. Proving that rooms with diminutive dimensions don’t have to have pint-size impact, the girls’ bathroom is full of playful pattern and a large helping of turquoise—transforming a utilitarian space into something delightfully lighthearted. Paired with unornamented neutral countertops and white tile throughout, the medley creates a room that is simultaneously spunky and serene. “The whole house is a compromise, but in a good way,” Fiorella says. “It doesn’t feel overtly traditional or contemporary, too playful or sophisticated. It’s a version of each with some wow moments thrown in for good measure.”

urchasing a historical home comes with some particular challenges, and perhaps the biggest one is finding the balance between respecting the home’s history while still infusing your own personality into it. Such was the case for a San Francisco couple when they purchased one of the city’s grand Victorians. To help them navigate the task, they turned to designer Paige Loczi and architect Stephen Sutro, who is well-known for his work on historical homes. While many owners of Victorians make the decision to keep the home traditional on the outside while going full-on modern for the interiors, the new owners chose to take a slightly different approach. “The clients wanted to remodel the home in a way that referenced the existing historic components,” says Sutro, who worked with architect Melissa Kim on the project. Freshening up with bright colors and opening up small spaces was important, but so was preserving the parts of the home they found aesthetically valuable. “It was about keeping some components and then adding new ones that are a little more simplified but complementary,” says Sutro. In the living room and dining room, the team—which also included general contractor Joseph Toboni—carefully edited some of the architectural trim. “We removed a few of the original elements in those rooms,” says Loczi. “But we also allowed some of the really distinctive ones to stay.” For instance, the team kept the burl-wood cabinetry in the dining room and the mantels in both rooms but replaced the fireplace tiles. “These were a few of the areas where we allowed the original interior architecture to really sing,” says the designer. “Then we added a few classical elements that paid homage, even though the materials themselves were modern.” To this end, Loczi chose a combination of classical and modern furniture, as well as materials that spoke to the

same goal. For example, the designer selected wallpaper for the dining room with a quintessential Victorian pattern from a contemporary wallpaper company. “For me, that was a nice way to marry the two and give it a modern twist,” she says. “The same is true of the use of Venetian plaster. We plastered the walls in the two powder rooms, living room and the media room.” The interior architecture also had to work with the owners’ desired color palette—both inside and out—which was very bold. Loczi remembers: “Their main request was, ‘we really want to use fuchsia, teal and purple—those are our three favorite colors. Can you do that in this very classical home?’ ” The answer was an unqualified yes. This palette was a major change from the existing one. “The house was very dark and traditional on the two main floors,” observes Sutro. The team worked with the couple to choose a vibrant blue with a fuchsia door for the exterior. “The really bold colors on the outside were absolutely the clients’ idea,” notes Loczi. Then the designer used teal, fuchsia and plum to inform the interior palette. In another modern interpretation of the home’s history, the team chose to take the dwelling’s lower-level ballroom that once hosted salons and dances and turn it into a contemporary entertainment space, complete with a media room and guest suite formed from the former maid’s quarters that were on the same level. “It had never been touched,” says Sutro. “It had heavenly tall ceilings and this wonderful ballroom space but otherwise was very antiquated and compartmentalized.” Opening up the spaces better serves today’s entertaining lifestyle, but it is also a nod to the lower level’s past. “It’s fun to think that the media room and bar, which were once the ballroom, are revitalized in a contemporary way so they are intact and serve a social function,” says Sutro. “I think that’s kind of neat.” To Loczi the home is a perfect reflection of the couple themselves, whom she describes as refined but risk takers. From the color choices to their art and decor suggestions, they brought their own ideas to the project. Case in point is the bespoke Sharon Marston chandelier that hangs from the fourth floor to the first. “The husband had seen a piece of Sharon’s many years ago in Tokyo,” says Loczi. “When we were working on this house, he introduced me to her. And then the ‘ghost chandelier’ that hangs in the stairwell was born.” The homeowners are art collectors, and it was important to them to promote local artists, such as Laurel Shear whose paintings are showcased in the living room. “The house is joyful and refined,” says Loczi. “It is still classical, but it is more modern—it’s our version of classical.”

11/27/19 1:47 PM

“There’s a nice juxtaposition between the refined character of the architecture and the boldness of the colors,” notes designer Paige Loczi of the grand Victorian in Hayes Valley that she renovated with architects Stephen Sutro and Melissa Kim. “It’s what really makes it modern. The blue siding and the fuchsia doors on the exterior set the stage for what is yet to come inside.”

In a contemporary take on the basement’s former function as a ballroom, Sutro designed a modern media room. “It is still a gathering space,” he notes. Geometric Innovations wallpaper is set off by Farrow & Ball trim in Down Pipe. Lee Broom pendants hang above a Patricia Urquiola sofa.

Opposite: Since Victorian homes weren’t originally built with proper master suites, Sutro and Kim decided to use some of the space from the master closet and a neighboring bedroom to create a master bathroom, where a sculptural tub sits beneath an artwork by Zhuang Hong Yi. Below: “The master bedroom is all about textures,” says Loczi, noting how the modern Donghia wallcovering, silk Madelin Weinrib rug, Patricia Urquiola bed and the Moooi overhead lighting work with the room’s classic moldings.

Brittany Chinaglia sells more than rugs at The Vintage Rug Shop—her specialty is items that have character (opposite). In the shop, a pillow crafted from a vintage rug perches on a chair beneath a row of glass and brass beads (left). Lifestyle books are another staple in the store (below).

B

rittany Chinaglia sat before a laptop perched on her dimly lit kitchen island, ready to tap a key that would change her life. It was minutes before midnight and her 30th birthday, and she had vowed to find a way to leave a job that bored her to fulfill her wish of owning a small business. She felt exhilaration as well as a little bit of fear. Getting there had taken all of Chinaglia’s life. “I was raised in Sonoma, and we didn’t have a lot,” she says. “But my step-grandfather had a small grocery store that he grew into a large business. I would help out in the cheese department or at the coffee station and it taught me a lot—including the impact a small family business can have on a community.” The idea and the lifestyle appealed to her, and she made a goal of launching her own enterprise someday. But after earning a business degree, Chinaglia went the corporate route, working in the finance department in a couple of companies. Although she was learning a lot, something was lacking, so she launched a blog in 2010 as a creative outlet. “I was starting to realize that finance wasn’t joyful or rewarding to me,” she says. “After my husband and I purchased a house, it became a home renovation blog. When people saw the vintage rugs I’d been collecting for my interiors, they started asking for them—and I thought it could be a good side hustle to sell them.” It was a hustle that took every waking moment outside of Chinaglia’s work and mom life. “I would spend hours after my kid went to sleep finding inventory and coding my own website and e-commerce site,” she says. Finally, after many months, she was ready to launch her business— which led her to the darkened kitchen just before midnight. “I didn’t know what to expect, and I wondered if anyone would buy them,” she says. “I had spent months learning all I could about the

LX_SF32_SM_VintageRugShop_4.indd 217

rugs, and how they are made.” But when the site was launched, the orders came rolling in. “I was up until 2 a.m. that night, and by the end of the next day, I’d sold out,” she says. Four years later, Chinaglia was ready to take the next step and open her own brick and mortar. “After a while, people selling rugs online became a dime a dozen. But most of us were selling small rugs, and I realized that there was a real need for large, room-size pieces,” she says. “I decided to pivot and specialize in large rugs—and I wanted to sell furniture and accessories to go with them. I also started sourcing vendors who were providing handcrafted and vintage items.” That’s why, after spotting an Oakland store front for rent while making a lunch run, Chinaglia was ready to tap a metaphorical key once again. She opened the doors to The Vintage Rug Shop in late 2019, selling vintage rugs as well as items that have warmth, interest and character. “There are a lot of ways to decorate your home,” Chinaglia says. “I sell rugs between 60 and 100 years old, and they are made to last several lifetimes. Although you can buy mass-produced rugs, these are one-of-a-kind pieces that add real soul to a room. They bring a history and a story to a space that can’t be recreated.”

J

onathan Rachman has never been shy about his adoration of San Francisco—the city he’s called home for more than three decades. The designer, who was born in Sumatra, educated in Switzerland, and has circled the globe more times than he can count, admits that travel has been his greatest interior design education. “But San Francisco has long been my inspiration,” he says. Part of that inspiration comes from the city’s distinctive architectural gems, like the classic Victorians that line its hilly streets and define many of its iconic neighborhoods. So, when Rachman was asked to hit refresh on a Victorian in the city’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, he jumped at the chance. “I had already designed this home for its previous owners—a young family with a baby—and the opportunity to do it all over again for new clients was intriguing to me,” says Rachman, who worked with general contractor David Rasmussen on the project. “A house like this is quintessential San Francisco. It’s like comfort food to me, because the architecture is so familiar and nostalgic. Of course, I already knew every square inch of this home from my previous work here with architect John Clarke, but what I didn’t know was just how much the new owners and I would have in common.” Those owners had been eyeing the San Francisco real estate market for months from their perch across the bay in Tiburon. “When we saw this house, we knew it hit all the right buttons,” says the husband. “Everything had already been updated from a renovation standpoint, and the designs were thoughtful and felt very authentic to the original architecture.”

“A HOUSE LIKE THIS IS QUINTESSENTIAL SAN FRANCISCO. THE ARCHITECTURE IS SO FAMILIAR AND NOSTALGIC.” –JONATHAN RACHMAN

“Victorians are beautiful, and I love all their intricate period details,” says the wife. “But they can also feel quite stuffy—or even scary. This house felt fresh and still appropriate for the architecture. Our agent told us Jonathan had designed it, so I called him from our Uber, and we hit it off. The house seemed to beg for many things I love, like wallpaper and antiques, but I needed him to help make it feel sophisticated and current. As soon as we got the keys, Jonathan came over and began to work with us.” For Rachman, the project was a dream, given the synchronicity between him and his new clients. They clicked instantly over a mutual fondness for old-school European design. “In Europe, there’s this common thread in the bestdesigned homes,” says Rachman. “They may be very high end, but they never feel staged. It’s not so much about brands as it is about bringing in things that you truly love, things that just feel right—no matter where they’re from. That’s my sweet spot in terms of design. I like to write the story of a home that feels like it is true not simply to the architecture—but also true to the people who live there.” While the house, built in 1897, seemed to yearn for antiques—some of them quite grand to fit the scale of the lofty rooms—Rachman tempered their formality with contemporary moments. He also gave each space a surprise, from unique light fixtures and modern art to textiles and curiosities from the couple’s extensive travels. “The juxtaposition of old and new, of expected and unexpected moments, relaxes everything and makes the house feel unfussy,” says the designer. Rachman wallpapered some rooms—not all of them—and painted the rest of the spaces in soft whites and grays for visual relief. He mixed contemporary, clean-lined furnishings with classic pieces with tailored forms. “There had to be a proper balance, because, let’s face it, nobody wants to live in a big old Victorian that looks like Granny’s attic,” he says. “We painted some antiques to revive them, reupholstered many old pieces, added gilding to lots of the accessories and frames, and had fun taking a few chances with color.” In the dining room, he clothed the walls in stunning green de Gournay wallpaper that befits the architectural formality of the room, but he added an Art Deco chandelier to keep the space from feeling too formal or thematic. In the living room, framed intaglios flank a contemporary photograph mounted in Plexiglas. Simple fabrics dress the windows, but tiebacks with tassels give a nod to tradition. In the wife’s office, stately Chinois wallpaper by Schumacher cloaks the walls, while a modern chandelier lights the space. “It’s the marriage of old and new that I love,” says Rachman. “I think it’s a marriage that is going to last.”

Throughout this house, designer Jonathan Rachman mixed old and new elements. In the serene living room he paired a velvet sofa by Coup d’Etat with a modern nesting coffee table by Kravet. A silvery rug by Stark echoes the paint color, Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. For an additional contemporary touch, the designer enlarged a photograph taken by the homeowner and framed it in Plexiglas.

The narrow staircase wears a runner by Stark, while a Vaughan Portobello Lantern lights the space. Opposite: In the family room, a graphic rug from H.D. Buttercup anchors the cozy space, where throw pillows—fashioned from the Andi Stripe textile designed by Rachman for Ellis Dunn Textiles— deliver pattern to the space. In the dining room, Rachman wanted to deliver a sense of “hushed luxury.” He started with a custom green de Gournay wallpaper that plays to the homeowners’ love of pheasants and other birds. He reinvented the front of the vintage chairs with mossy green velvet fabric that complements the wallpaper. The backs of the chairs wear a daring yet timeless leopard print. An area rug by Stark adds luminescence and texture.

Its style mirrors the original sconces at Claridge’s in London. The window panels were fashioned from Larsen’s Juniper Aqua fabric and their tassels, by Décor de Paris, lend a welcome sense of formality.

The family room boasts a sofa, ottoman and chair by Jean-Louis Deniot for Baker. Rachman chose Hermès’ Equateur and Fortuny’s Vivaldi fabrics for the throw pillows. The green garden stools from J. Rachman deliver unexpected color to the otherwise neutral space and are a nod to the formal garden visible from this light-filled room. The pair of large-scale Louis XVI-style armchairs is from Antique & Art Exchange.

The wife’s office is a romantic escape, and its walls are dressed in Schumacher’s Chinois Palais wallpaper and the bay window is draped in Designers Guild Brera Striscia from Osborne & Little. Sheers in Hartley Pebble by Pindler allow the room both privacy and natural light. The Lady’s desk by Barbara Barry is from Henredon.
