Silence is golden…and stylish, too, courtesy of Architecture Research Office. Partners Stephen Cassell, Kim Yao, and Adam Yarinsky unveil the firm’s namesake collection of acoustical solutions for FilzFelt. The fully customizable system includes ARO Block, featuring wool-felt panels of varying shapes designed to form repetitive patterns across entire walls or as an accent. Inspired by a tour of high-tech West Coast HQs, the prolific designer teamed with Vitra to develop Hack, a flexible system that upends the corporate-office paradigm. Raw panels of OSB frame the units, which can be fitted with work surfaces or converted into seating by adding upholstery. And Hack flat-packs for quick moving or storage. With its newest collection, Synergy, conscientious textile house Camira one-ups itself. The fabric, made of premium New Zealand wool spiked with nylon (5 percent, to be exact), is a slightly softer, lighter, and brighter version of its popular Blazer wool. The series encompasses 75 solid hues and two coordinating prints: the tie-dye-effect Individuo and the aptly named Zig Zag, the latter conceived by graphic designers Howard Wakefield and Sarah Parris of British studio Parris Wakefield Additions. The high-performance fabric boasts a relaxed drape, sublime handle, and personality to spare. space 11-23A

Five’s a charm for Bernhardt Design. The company’s slew of slick NeoCon introductions offers ZIP something for every office. Hyein Jwa’s magnificent Mix Panel is a ceilinghung acoustical privacy screen that vertically adjusts via a self-leveling system that’s incorporated into the balsa wood core. Panels are padded with insulating foam and can be covered in any Bernhardt Textiles fabric or COM. Pair them with Alex Akopova’s zesty Zip, available as an armless chair or a corner piece, with black or brown belting-leather handle—plus grand-scale zippers on both sides enabling units to be connected into sofas. Round out a vignette with Trevor Cheney’s racy Autobahn table, featuring legs that extend through and subtly delineate the work surface. Leo Su’s flexible Tour ottoman, meanwhile, can wander anywhere—like the duffle bags that inspired it—courtesy of its belting-leather strap. And finally, Taylor Cheng’s modular Via ottomans and tables are always in motion thanks to canted legs. That’s quite the quintet! space 399

primo in his prime San Francisco’s O+A is practically synonymous with Silicon Valley, having designed officescapes for tech titans ranging from Alibaba to Zazzle. A signature of the studio’s work is layered, nuanced spaces that accommodate myriad work styles and tasks, and that evolve artfully over time as staffs expand and needs shift. So it’s little wonder that firm cofounder (and Interior Design Hall of Famer) Primo Orpilla’s latest product launch for the corporate sphere, Assembli for Martin Brattrud, offers flexibility in abundance. Sleek seating units pair with straight or curved panels (offered in three heights) to create any arrangement imaginable: a span of high-backed banquettes, a zigzagging run of confab nooks, a wraparound lounge chair serviced by mobile ottomans. nearly five-year collaboration between the manufacturer’s internal design team of Michael Welsch and Kyle Fleeting and their longtime partners at Germany’s ITO Design. Earth revolves around the sun, and so may our energy future. That’s the promise that Hanergy Holding Group, a manufacturer of solar cells and other eco-friendly power equipment, holds out at this exhibition center promoting renewable energy. Considering the company’s financial problems, making headlines internationally, this museum in a former office building in Beijing’s Olympic Forest Park is almost certain to be the best news to come out of Hanergy this year, and that’s due to the sophisticated interior architecture and installations by Triad project manager Lu Yijing. The visitor experience is highly choreographed. A video wall screens a short orientation film. Guides then lead groups through a 22,000-square-foot environment defined by polished stainless steel, copper, futuristic plastics, and backlit acrylic prints. To trigger the multimedia programming along the way, guides push buttons in the walls or tap the screens of tablet computers. Installations recount the rise of fossil fuels, then point toward Hanergy’s bid to power the world sustainably. The centerpiece, both physically and symbolically, is a large glowing sun assembled from handpainted fiberglass layers and internally lit with LEDs. Cartoonish white neon depictions of a lightbulb, a telephone, and the like flash on when someone sparks up what appears to be an old-school generator. It’s pure theater, though: Electricity here is generated by Hanergy solar panels mounted outside on the roof and facade. —Craig Kellogg

yod studio of commercial design Asian cuisines share ingredients, but overall flavor profiles differ. Similarly, Asian design is regionally seasoned with national

and ethnic influences. So YOD Studio of Commercial Design needed to prepare an all-encompassing look for East, a pan-Asian restaurant in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. “Eastern philosophy unites the various countries,” YOD founder Volodymyr Nepyivoda explains. He also referenced the Asian cultural reverence for nature by featuring wood, stone, metal, water, and fire. At the front of the 4,300-square-foot space, near the hostess station—prime real estate among the restaurant’s 170 seats—a booth’s high wood sides recall a sake cup. A massive granite counter is positioned at the lower height typical of sushi bars. The seating resembles Chinese scholar’s chairs. And small tabletops are wood imported from Java, Indonesia, their straightforward form highlighting the exotic surface. Pendant fixtures have shades the size and color of boulders: huge quasi-dodecahedrons in fuzzy gray felt. In the natural world, boulders often accompany waterfalls, but the cascade in East’s restroom is of a decidedly different sort. Above the washbasin,

water streams through three descending ceramic channels when a visitor waves a hand at the motion sensor. Waiting for the water to reach the washbasin, there’s a moment for Zen contemplation. —Craig Kellogg DMYTRO BONESKO; NATALIA TIMOSHENKO; SERGIY ANDRIENKO; MAKSYM NETREBA; GLEB MELNIK: PROJECT TEAM.

Markus Jehs and Jßrgen Laub are giving you the boot. No, seriously: The partners of Jehs+Laub, the German industrial and interior design studio, drew inspiration from the construction of a ski boot in creating their Striad lounge chair. The inner shell is a composite of natural fibers and thermoplastic polymers, the comfort quotient reinforced via dual-density foam cushions, shaped and sized to ease the spine. A rigid outer shell assures maximum stability. The low- and mid-back versions help facilitate conversation, while the high-back model adds a measure of privacy. And when it’s time to stretch out, just pull up the matching ottoman.

laborated for more than 30 years, you start to think alike. Such is the symbiotic relationship between this office specialist and Michael Vanderbyl, who join forces once again on the Conexus work/lounge chair. The slim and sculptural profile surrounds the user in rich walnut, or may be fully upholstered, while the steel base with self-return swivel can be polished or powder-coated black. “It plays with the shape of a classic lounge chair and transforms it into a more organic form,” the Interior Design Hall of Fame member says of the hybrid seat. Shown in HBF Textiles’s Brushed Canvas viscose-acrylic blend, but available in nearly any cover, it’s equally fitting in groups around a table, or standing alone in a private office.

color combinations, Carnegie designer Kait Paradowski started tossing around scraps of fabric. While stitching the fragments together, she became taken with the lively angles and patterns that emerged from the disarray, the colors “so wrong they were right, she says. A local mill discovered how to preserve the spirit of the makeshift patchwork in high-performance upholstery fabric, a pattern aptly dubbed Collage. The 54-inch-wide blend of postconsumer recycled polyester, cotton, and nylon is available in six standard colorways.

For upholstery, there are Melody and Ritual in a nylon-cotton blend, and Align and Mesh in Trevira CS polyester—the same material composing the Compose drapery. Among the digitally printed wall coverings are Balance, the rectilinear ground on metallic Mylar, and Tone, a striped polyester felt.

11TH FLOOR While serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, Vollis Simpson built his first

whirligig with salvage from a B-29 bomber, eventually, by his death in 2013, assembling more than 30. Metal mash-ups might not seem an obvious muse for textiles, but Mayer Fabrics knew Simpson’s vivacity would translate into equally animated patterns, all in Sunbrella Contract acrylic-polyester. Metal Strips is a tarnished metallic grid, Reflector a small-scale geometric, and Wilson an abstract stripe. Signs is a hexagonal motif taken from highway signs, Spokes borrowed from bicycle tires, and Whirligig a graphic rendering of his signature. A portion of sales will benefit restoration of Simpson’s works and their relocation to a commemorative park opening in Wilson, North Carolina, next year.

Los Angeles talent Chris Adamick redefines traditional reception-based furniture with Parallel, a series of tightly tailored seating and tables that’s equally applicable beyond the front desk. The club chair, chair-and-ahalf, and sofa are designed for maximum functionality, with broad track arms that double as work surfaces courtesy of removable metal sleeves. The steel-framed upholstered pieces nicely complement the occasional assortment, consisting of coffee and side tables with aluminum legs topped in laminate or wood veneer.

3 Greens Market [¢]

Cochon Volant [¢]

Brendan Sodikoff is the brains behind upscale diner Au Cheval, Bavette’s Bar and Boeuf steakhouse, and Doughnut Vault, to name just a few of the 10-plus lauded eateries the prolific restaurateur has opened in six years. The newest addition to his portfolio combines his greatest hits in a food hall mash-up: Cheval’s legendary burger and Doughnut Vault’s baked goods coexist with a hot and cold salad bar, a pastrami station, an espresso counter, and small-batch cocktails. Décor is casualcomfy, 1970’s rec-room vibe: The charmingly mismatched TV lounge—type space is large enough to fit 235 patrons and a miniature putting green. “We’re giving the neighborhood what it’s been asking for,” Sodikoff dishes. As well as busy Neocongoers: It's less than two blocks from the Mart.

As the general public continues its fascination with culinary culture, a trade term has entered the layperson’s lexicon: "the family meal," which is what’s served to employees before a restaurant opens for dinner service. When chef Roland Liccioni was tapped for this brasserie inside the Hyatt Centric, he thought about which meals made his colleagues in the kitchen happiest, thus the menu’s mix of comforting French classics, such as omelettes, French dip, and steak frites. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

354 West Hubbard Street; 312-888-9195.

Operated by Quay Tao and Joey Beato, this restaurant appreciates meat in all its forms. To start, there is roasted bone marrow or a terrine of short rib and oxtail. Entrees include that caveman-esque cut, the porterhouse. A few delicate options also make the menu, like bouillabaisse with smoked tomato or tuna crudo. Birdcage pendants, mismatched mirrors, and blue-velvet seating lend the steakhouse a shabby chic ambiance.

Atwood [$] This seasonal American restaurant gets its name from the original architect of the structure it’s housed inside, the landmarked Reliance Building, built in 1895 by Charles B. Atwood. But it’s BCDG Studio that refreshed the current interiors with appealing white subway tile and tufted black-leather banquettes. The minimalism stops there. The menu serves up such homey flavorful classics as monkey bread, pan-seared chicken, and rhubarb upside-down cake. 1 West Washington Street; 312-368-1900.

Brindille [$] You might recognize this hot spot: It’s the 2015 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design, which went to Bureau of Architecture and Design. Turns out, it’s a family affair. Principal Tom Nahabedian is a cousin of the chef, Carrie Nahabedian, and he outfitted the space in a serene arboreal theme (brindille is French for “twig”)—think branchlike Lindsey Adelman light fixtures and walnut accents redolent of a forest. Of course, the cuisine is equally exquisite: lobes of foie gras, caviar atop Cortes Island oysters, sweetbreads with cocoa—and those are just the appetizers. 534 North Clark Street; 312-595-1616.

Charlatan [¢] Looks old-school, but is actually quite post-modern. That’s pretty much the deal at this Italian joint. White-painted brickwork reads typical trattoria, but plumbing pipes fashioned into light fixtures and wallpaper patterned with dancing skeletons are more irreverent. That divergence from tradition also shines through in the pastas—truffle-flecked messinese topped with a sous-vide egg, charred-fennel tortellini sprinkled with pollen—all of which are made in-house and offered in sensible half portions. 1329 West Chicago Avenue; 312-818-2073.

100 West Monroe Street; 312-236-1234.

Community Tavern [$]

4038 North Milwaukee Avenue; 773-283-6080.

Dove’s Luncheonette [¢] This 41-stool diner is run by the team behind the Publican and Nico Osteria. Walnut wainscoting, earth-tone tilework, an original tin ceiling, and a jukebox evoke Chicago's bygone era, when legendary local eateries Sophie’s Busy Bee and Leo’s Lunchroom existed. This menu, however, a fusion of Southern and Mexican, is no typical greasy spoon. Fried chicken comes smothered in chorizo-verde gravy. The ham-and-cheese sandwich is flecked with cilantro and salsa. And everything can be topped with a fried egg. 1545 North Damen Avenue; 773-645-4060.

Frontier [¢] Should you really want to break away from the Mart, head on over to what’s referred to as “the edge of civilization,” aka West Town. Your palate should have that same sense of adventure, since nature dictates what’s on the menu. There are sausages made out of wild boar or venison, smoked beef-cheek tacos, and an entire section dedicated to alligator (hot fried gator legs anyone?). Saddle up to the generous wooden bar in the rustic main dining room, or kick back in the open-air beer garden. 1072 North Milwaukee Avenue; 773-772-4322.

Imperial Lamian [¢] A restaurant group from far-flung Indonesia makes a move to North America, landing right here in the Windy City. The food, though, is less Balinese and more Chinese, with a special focus on chef Wang Hongjun’s lamian, or hand-pulled noodles. Designed by Jakarta-based interior architecture firm Metaphor, the décor’s birdcage pendant fixtures and handmade lattice screens offer a contemporary take on traditional tropes. While the dim sum and BBQ are sure to please a crowd, Instagram aficionados prefer the colorful xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, which come in an appealing rainbow of hues corresponding to flavors such as spicy szechuan, crab, truffle, and gruyère. 6 West Hubbard Street; 312-595-9440.

Leña Brava [$] Fire and ice is the theme of this Mexican (Baja to be precise) restaurant from seven-time James Beard Foundation Award winner Rick Bayless. Raw seafood (the ice) is plentiful, while everything else is cooked over a wood fire, from braised short ribs to butter-roasted plantains and char-seared octopus. The mode of cooking being rustic, designer Design Bureaux's Thomas Schlesser sought a balance with notes of luxury via saddle-leather chairs and walnut tables. He also made a feature of the exhibition-style chef’s kitchen, visible to all diners, and brought a sense of residential ease to the 6,000-square-foot space with colors and textures that recall the Oaxacan landscape, the region that influences the restaurant’s mezcal libations. 900 West Randolph Street; 312-733-1975.

MFK [¢] American food writer Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher, aka M.F.K., serves as the inspiration for this cozy 28-seat establishment. It even adopted her mantra: “First we eat. Then we do everything else.” The interior could be interpreted as an homage to her California home: light and bright with whitewashed walls and blond wood tables. But the cuisine is Spain-influenced, mostly seafood and unpretentious. 432 West Diversey Parkway; 773-857-2540.

Momotaro [$] As far as Japanese restaurants go, this one breaks the mold. Its 11,000 square feet, designed by AvroKO, offers multiple dining experiences—from the sushi bar, set in the middle of the main floor, akin to a buzzing stock exchange, to a subterranean izakaya, dedicated to craft cocktails and inspired by the back alleys of Tokyo. Food choices are equally diverse. The extensive menu offers nigiri, robata skewers, and hibachi, among countless other options. 820 West Lake Street; 312-733-4818.

Oriole [$] White linen tablecloths and George Nelson pendants grace the gritty brick of this tiny 28-seat restaurant, secreted down a back alley and accessed via a freight elevator. The fixed price of $175 gets you an extended tasting menu from chef Noah Sandoval, formerly of Michelin-starred Senza, encompassing around 15

delicacies from the simple (sourdough with cultured butter) to the refined (chicory custard with whiskey; Icelandic trout with smoke roe and marjoram). Finish off the night with pastry chef Genie Kwon’s almond croissant scented with cardamom and rose or gianduja chocolate paired with black currant, pretzel, and raclette. Every detail is considered, down to the house-made mints in the bathroom. This is fine dining indeed, but without the fusty atmosphere. 661 West Walnut Street; 312-943-6900.

Parachute [$] Actual parachutes hang in the windows of this spare yet warm, 40-seat family-run restaurant. Fitting, as the menu lands in a new fusion niche: Korean American, with hints of French, Moroccan, and Indian. That means dishes like boudin noir with raspberry vinegar, black udon with squid, and spicy beef hot pot with black radish, clams, egg, and wild fern. But the menu changes nightly. 3500 North Elston Avenue; 773-654-1460.

Rural Society [¢/$] La Sociedad Rural Argentina, the annual celebration of culture and agriculture, is about to kick off in Buenos Aires. Chef Jose Garces used it as his inspiration for this steakhouse, the second outpost following one in Washington. Billowing canvas curtains reminiscent of fairground tents hang down from exposed rafters, while ephemera, photographs, and ribbons from the show fill the rustic space below. In addition to the menu’s steaks, cooked in the traditional grilled asado style, there are fugazza, Argentina's version of focaccia, and pastas. 455 North Park Drive; 312-840-6600.

The Betty [¢] To the owners of this lounge and restaurant, Betty is a rockabilly Southern gal from the 1950’s. That translates to a dimly lit wood-paneled space populated with old records, vintage glassware, and a taxidermied peacock presiding over the retro DOVE'S LUNCHEONETTE cash register. Betty also knows how to mix a mean cocktail, flavoring them with house-made juices and syrups. Small plates like fried cauliflower and charred endive make it easy to stay late into the night—especially when the pianist starts knockin’ out good ‘ole rock ‘n’ roll. 839 West Fulton Street; 312-733-2222.
