EDITOR’S LETTER

a new view... The Tweak: it’s an ever-present verb for those of us in the business of design. Our days are consumed with upgrades and installs; recasts and transformations; alterations, punctuations and slightly-to-the-rights. A decade ago we began publishing Luxe Interiors + Design, and for this celebratory 10-year anniversary, we’ve done some refurbishing of our own with a refresh of our magazine pages. We’ve reassembled its parts in a way that makes for a better read. We’ve introduced more robust feature stories, revitalized the typography, and clarified the navigation of our departments. You’ll find news and discoveries for the season in “Radar,” the latest décor and product introductions in “Market,” and inspiring ideas for the home in “The Look.” Design never stands still, and we’ve certainly evolved over the past decade. What hasn’t changed much, however, is the mission of our magazine: to inform and inspire, cultivate ideas, and connect design enthusiasts with design talent. As always, and hopefully for the next 10 years and beyond, we hope you enjoy our magazine.

The Golden Triangle recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in grand style and Luxe Interiors + Design was there to share in the festivities. With the help of owners Douglas Van Tress and Chauwarin Tuntisak’s 200 closest friends, Luxe toasted to the success of the brand’s past 25 years, as well as to its future endeavors. We also held our annual holiday party this past December at Benny’s Chop House. Friends came together to enjoy some holiday cheer as Benny’s served up festive cocktail creations, delicious bites and fabulous sweets.

Not-to-miss event: Chatter: Architecture Talks Back, curated by Karen Kice at The Art Institute from April 11 through July 12. I have my eye on… Architect David Adjaye. In 2016, he will complete the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. People will have the opportunity to get to know more about David this fall as we are organizing the first major mid-career survey of his work, opening September 19. having a moment: We’re fortunate to have so many brilliant people in Chicago: Designers Parsons & Charlesworth, Defne Koz and Marco Susani, and artist Sung Jang are ones to watch. Career wish list: I would love to add some important works of Radical Italian design from the 1960s and ’70s to the permanent collection at The Art Institute. Works by Alessandro Mendini, Vico Magistretti and Andrea Branzi, for example, that illustrate the power of design as a tool for challenging us to reconsider our everyday interactions and the objects that have come to define daily life. medium you think deserves more attention: Graphic designers are master communicators able to frame and explore intellectual, cultural and social questions through their work and draw attention to the richness of the world around us. Zoë Ryan is Chair and John H. Bryan Curator, Department of Architecture and Design at The Art Institute of Chicago. The modern design enthusiast is also an avid bibliophile.

happening in Chicago: A long-standing pipe dream, the Bloomingdale Trail is actually being built. It is a raised park/path on an antiquated rail line that will have no automotive traffic. It sounds like something I would have enjoyed as a kid.

on tap for Chicago: Maggie Daley Park, the renovations of Navy Pier and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art— they’ll make life along the Lakefront even better. I’m also looking forward to the city’s first architecture biennial, The State of the Art of Architecture, that’s starting in October. It’ll include spatial experiments and debates about the current state of our global practice.

Neighborhoods for the design enthusiast: The Loop has particularly modern finds at places like Manifesto and Lightology. Or head up to Andersonville for vintage and industrial treasures at Room Service, Scout and Brimfield. Keep your eye on: I always love seeing what the ladies of Indo are up to. They focus on window displays and art installations created from materials diverted from the city’s waste and recycling streams; they have been gaining a lot of steam.

Ian Kaminski-Coughlin is an architect at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He owns a ridiculous number of vintage Brooks Brothers suits.

I’d love to see… 3D printers aiding in mold making for iron and bronze casting. Maybe someone is already doing this, but I think it would open a bizarre new door for hardware. Kendall Karmanian is a photographer and budding furniture designer. He’s dying to shoot Daft Punk, but would be satisfied to just sit in a room with the musical duo.

What’s trending: Activating public spaces with quality furniture, like what you see at Mariano Triangle; it’s more comfortable and inviting, which is great for the life of the city and its residents. Also, sustainability, though our generation and the next can’t afford for it to be a trend.

six degrees of separation: Before moving to Paris, Ernest Hemingway lived in my Gold Coast row house. If he could come back for dinner, that would be amazing. architecture, present and future: There’s been a move toward better integration with landscape architecture. From this, we get projects to perform more efficiently from an an energy and water perspective.

Chicago’s most beautiful landmark: The 1550 North State Parkway building by renowned architect Benjamin Marshall.

Covetable recent purchases: A vintage Hermès travel bag from Les 3 Marches de Catherine B in Paris, and a 1940s French oak table from Le Marché Paul Bert Serpette in Saint-Ouen, France.

For inspiring interiors, I look to… Jewelry design and old films. of color and texture against the skyline is like nowhere else. Also, don’t miss Lincoln Park’s Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool. It challenges traditional notions of what a garden is while stunning you with its naturalistic beauty. What’s trending: Our clients are asking for organic gardens, fire pits and outdoor kitchens. All of these relate to a desire to bring families together. I think everyone is searching for ways to slow down and reconnect. Great landscape architecture connects people to the land, where human bonds can be nurtured. It encourages them to pause, sit and linger to enjoy the world around them.

Biggest design challenge ever faced: Persuading Steve Jobs to build the first green roof on one of his Apple stores. Douglas Hoerr, partner at Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, has always wanted to design a world-class waterfront golf course…and be a jet fighter pilot.

What’s on your horizon lately? I’m most excited about cities like Houston and Des Moines, Iowa, that are recognizing the need for a botanic garden or arboretum as an essential cultural component of their communities. What’s intriguing you in the world of design? Clients have such unprecedented access to inspiration and ideas, from Etsy, Instagram and Pinterest to the brilliant search engine on 1stDibs. They are coming to us with clear visuals now to explain what they want in their spaces. Nate Berkus is an interior and product designer, TV personality and author. He loves authentic design and sleeping in, and has the uncanny ability to impersonate most foreign accents.

Having a moment: From the work of Märta Måås-Fjetterström to Finn Juhl—the timeless craft and warmth of Scandinavian design really resonates right now and is becoming increasingly popular. Happening in Chicago: Local artist Theaster Gates has been challenging and engaging the broader art and design world to improve the South Side. And, hopefully, we will be getting the Barack Obama Presidential Library. add to your agenda: I know Millennium Park is already on everyone’s to-do list, but it is one of the best reimaginings of a public space in recent memory. Take the bridge over to The Art Institute’s Modern Wing, and make the effort to find Tadao Ando’s first commission in America, the Ando Gallery. I wish I could have kept… The Isamu Noguchi stone table that sold at our Important 20th Century Design auction in 2005. Book I read on repeat: Design 1935-1965: What Modern Was, by Paul John and Martin Eidelberg. There’s always a new discovery in there. Richard Wright is the founder of Wright auction house in Chicago. He collects caviar spoons and wishes Charles and Ray Eames were still working today.

MIX MASTERS

CUTTING-EDGE WORKS EMPLOY TECHNIQUES AS VARIED AS THE ARTISTS WHO CREATED THEM. WRITTEN BY JESSE BRATTER / PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS

ELISA GOMEZ MIXED MEDIA Whether it’s the energetic rhythms of an upbeat salsa number or the transportive sounds of a classical opus, all music moves Elisa Gomez in an indescribable way. The Austin-based abstract painter translates this feeling to canvas using brushes, palette knives or even her bare hands. The graffiti effect in Am I Free From This Dream #2, left, is a result of her fast-paced strokes and layered textures; it's part of her series with local composer Walter Nichols—a visual portrayal of his musical arrangements. Of her wish for viewers to have the same reaction to her art as she has to music, she says, “I hope people are taken to a deeper, more meaningful place.” elisagomezart.com

TROY SIMMONS CONCRETE Troy Simmons is so captivated by Brutalist architecture that he translates the vernacular to canvas, juxtaposing raw concrete against sleek pigments (see Durchbruch, left, shown vertically, and Serendipity, below). Approaching each piece like a construction project— his heaviest weighs 300 pounds—the Miami artist creates 3-D renderings and drawings before chiseling away at the cement. “My creative process reflects who we are as humans,” Simmons says. “We all carry complex yet beautiful experiences in our souls.” See his work this May at JanKossen Contemporary Art Gallery in New York. troysimmonsstudio.com

SARAH RASKEY MIXED MEDIA The Swarovski crystals in Sarah Raskey’s 24kt Gold and Glamour, above, is a good indication of the high fashion that permeates her work. The elegant result is a far cry from the mad-scientist process that gets her there: picture materials spilled over, others set on fire, and power tools strewn about her Chicago studio. “I love the dance that takes place among art, fashion and self-expression,” says Raskey, who, as an art therapist, helps others find healing through creativity. “I want viewers to feel that my art encourages the human spirit.” Raskey will be incorporating Maya Romanoff’s handmade textiles into her work for an exhibit at its Chicago showroom this April. sarahraskey.com

JAMIE LEE REARDIN ILLUSTRATION “When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a Disney animator, and my interests later expanded into fashion,” recalls Los Angeles-based fashion illustrator Jamie Lee Reardin. “I eventually fused these passions, and from my imagination emerged these gawky gazelles with long, impossibly thin silhouettes.” Their dramatic appearance, seen in Aline, left, speaks to Reardin's fascination with complex personalities like Cruella De Vil and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Her talents ultimately caught the eye of Dior Beauty's Dianne Vavra, which turned into the ideal collaboration. Now with each pen stroke and watercolor mark, she's surpassing her childhood dreams one character at a time. jamieleereardin.com

ELOISE CORR DANCH PAPER All Brooklyn artist Eloise Corr Danch needs to create her swoon-worthy works are her grandmother’s heavy metal scissors, X-Acto knives and a colorful imagination. Whether flowers, headpieces, illustrations or myriad other objects, it’s the endless color wheel and the way light reflects off its surface that attracts Danch to paper as her medium. Since her studies explored fashion history and construction, translating her floral creations for editorial fashion spreads and window dressings comes naturally—they've been used to embellish Diane von Furstenberg’s New York and Paris flagship stores, for one. “I love the play between the utility of clothes and the artistry and romance of fashion,” she says. “I hope the defining message of my work is beauty. Whether in the form of color, line or silhouette, I am always seeking to create something beautiful.” eloisecorrdanch.com

KELSEY BROOKES ACRYLIC

From an overlook at McWay Falls in Big Sur, California, Oakland artist Laura Plageman stands with her camera, marveling at the relationship between man and nature—the idyllic vista calling out to her, yet its inaccessible beach and falls remaining out of reach. In that vein, Plageman created a second image, left, that appears part illusory and part tangible, altering her original printed photo of McWay Falls and then photographing the result as a still life. Comprising her Response series, the photograph presents a seemingly impossible scene yet shows evidence of its construction through crumples and folds in the paper. “I delight in making an image that’s at once familiar and unfamiliar,” she says. “I want the viewer to look at the details and discover the image for themselves.” photolp.com

JEAN WELLS MOSAIC One look at Jean Wells’ mosaic-mirrored sculptures and it’s easy to see the influence of pop culture on her work. So it’s no surprise that when asked to name an artist favorite, she points to Wayne Thiebaud for reflecting food and humor in his paintings. Wells, too, turns to iconography and nostalgia when sculpting her fanciful objects and fast food re-creations using glass she cuts by hand; Conversation Piece, right, is an example of Wells recalling her youth. What's more, her mosaic soda bottles can be seen traveling the world this year as part of a Coca-Cola exhibition. “My motivation is spreading happiness,” muses the Seattle native. It’s a fitting mantra for an artist whose work gushes with sentimentality and whimsy. wellsart.com

For San Diego-based painter Kelsey Brookes, a scientistturned-artist, there is no left brain-right brain distinction. “You have one brain and it can become interested in whatever you purposely direct it toward,” he says. To this point, in his artistic endeavors, Brookes still explores cerebral patterns and molecular structure—but instead of examining them through a microscope, he maps them out on canvas using Golden acrylic paint and Winsor & Newton Series 7 sablehair brushes. In contrast to their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, as seen in his One Pointed Attention series, right, Brookes calmly creates his psychedelic works while listening to NPR or, sometimes, in total silence. Check out his molecular prints this spring at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, California, and see other works at New York’s Eric Firestone Gallery in June. kelseybrookes.com

WrITTen AnD prODuCeD BY mimi faucett

Ignacia Murtagh’s personal connection to pre-Hispanic native cultures began in the place she calls home: Southern Chile. “I fell in love with Chile’s poetic tradition that reinforces design as the vehicle to turn tiny but relevant details of nature into useful and significant interior elements,” she says. As a young designer, Murtagh has always attributed her design sensibility to the exuberant geography of her surroundings. Her most recent project—a series of three side tables for Bernhardt Design—directs that credit to the Andes Mountains. “The Los Andes tables were inspired by mountains that are strong and imposing but at the same time graceful and slender,” she describes. This

sculptural elegance was achieved with the tables’ unpredictable heights, organic angles and contrasting sharpness. Murtagh spent a year with the designers at Bernhardt sketching, modeling and ultimately learning to work with a new material: wood. “Ceramics are malleable. You can accomplish complex designs in a short time and change elements quickly,” explains the designer. “Wood is out of your control. The character of the grain, colors and textures are expressed differently in every piece. Once you understand the material, however, wood becomes limitless.” Armed with an aesthete’s eye and an ever-growing material repertoire, Murtagh is proving to be just as limitless herself.

RADAR / 5 MINUTES WITH

NO MEDIUM IS OFF-LIMITS FOR ARTIST DAVID WISEMAN, WHO TAPS SILK AS HIS NEW MUSE FOR A LIMITED-EDITION RUG DESIGN.

WRITTEN BY MIRANDA AGEE / PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

Clockwise from top: David Wiseman’s limited-edition rug design for R & Company. The artist’s Glacier pendant in Smoke. A Lily of the Valley installation from a past solo exhibition of Wiseman’s at R & Company. A one-of-a-kind Collage fireplace screen in bronze and porcelain. This Small Geode vase in bronze is one of 25 made, each signed and numbered. A custom commission for a private New York residence.

Glass, bronze, porcelain: For artist David Wiseman, his material selections are as varied as his creations. His scene-stealing designs can be found all over the world, from large-scale porcelain installations for Dior boutiques in Shanghai and Tokyo—which he designed in collaboration with architect Peter Marino—to being a part of the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. Now, in partnership with R & Company, the Los Angeles-based Wiseman is taking his intricate skills to the ground level with a limited-edition rug design inspired by his travels and rooted in historical craftsmanship. Designer Todd Oldham gave you your big break. Tell us more about that. My first project was a nature-inspired hat hanger. Todd, who I had met when he was a guest lecturer for one of my classes at RISD, actually ended up ordering a bunch of them to give as gifts. Then, when I graduated college, he offered me a job. What are your favorite materials to work with? Bronze is endlessly fascinating to me. There are so many different alloys and patinas, and when you bring it up to a high polish, it’s a true work of art. How did rugs come into the picture for you? R & Company approached me with the idea to translate my designs into a rug collection. I went to Kathmandu to meet the weavers and to better understand their process. When I got there, I was blown away. Meeting them completely changed my concept because I needed to be as detailed as they were. Can you speak to the handmade aspect? It takes anywhere from six to eight months to create one rug and only 12 are being made in two distinct colorways. Because of the high quality of silk that they use, there are 4.5 million knots in each carpet.

Textiles are a new arena for you. Did you have to think differently? It started the same way I begin all of my designs, with pencil and paper, but I quickly learned that there is no room for error. The Tibetan and Nepalese communities of rug makers were so skilled at being able to capture the drawings they even wove my subtle eraser marks into one of the samples. How did your travels come to influence this particular project? The concept is about fusing my favorite patterns from around the world so I thought it would be appropriate to add a common Tibetan motif— such as billowing clouds—into the design. What else inspires you? I always turn to nature and its history in the decorative arts. I love seeing how different cultures have internalized nature and included it in their indigenous ornamental patterns. With everything you create, what are you always looking to achieve? Finding the poetic truth about what each material wants to become. I’m obsessed with that.

MOBILI MÖBEL

#INSTACRUSH @nathanmichael

WHO: Nathan Michael, a food, lifestyle and interiors photographer whose artistic take on the everyday elevates the offerings of clients like Airbnb, Fossil, Gap and Ogilvy & Mather to new levels. WHAT: Expect to see picture-perfect shots of gourmet meals, breathtaking documentation of Michael’s many travels, and cozy interiors with plenty of layers in an assortment of creative compositions. WHY: Through his lens, Michael transforms the ordinary. His mastery of texture—you’ll find a great deal of roughly hewn wood and veiny marble backdrops in his photography— and masculine patterns make even the most simple vignettes sing. IN HIS WORDS: “Ninety percent of the images on my feed are taken with my iPhone. I love mobile photography and I have been pretty loyal to the VSCO Cam app since its release.” 138 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

IN PROCESS LAUREN HARPER What happens behind the scenes in the studios of some of the city’s best craftsmen and artisans? For awardwinning jewelry designer Lauren Harper, creativity means looking to the past and a lot of hard work. “Typically, once I put pencil to paper, I already know what I want a finished piece to look like,” she says. “I tend to draw inspiration from a variety of areas, but much of my line is influenced by my love of 1920s fashion and architecture.” Once she completes a technical drawing, however, there’s still much to do, like her tireless hunt for the right rough materials to make the design come to life. “This can be the most difficult part of the process,” she says, “but sourcing and cutting my own stones is one of the things that allows me freedom and gives my line a sense of individuality.” laurenharpercollection.com

When did you open? We moved into our current space in River North in 2012. What makes Mobili Möbel different from other showrooms? We believe that furniture can be as beautiful as it is functional. Our name comes from the Italian and German words for “furniture” and represents the harmony created from our unique combination of European designs. What lines do you carry? We represent more than 30 brands, but some of our favorites include de Sede, Rolf Benz, Team 7, Driade, BD Barcelona Design, Fiam, Missoni Home and Draenert. How often should shoppers check in for new inventory? We maintain some classic pieces but update most of our offerings every three to four months. mobilimobel.com

LUXE TAPPED TALENTED LOCAL DESIGNERS FOR THEIR BEST SOURCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO SHINE A LIGHT ON SOME OF THE CITY’S FINEST OFFERINGS IN ART AND DESIGN.

“ When we go looking for special pieces and antiques, The Find is always our first stop (our second, too, if you count both their locations on Grand Avenue and the North Shore). They have everything—from books and accessories to interesting furniture.”

“ Francine Turk is a timeless talent. As an artist myself, she speaks my language, and I have a literal physical reaction every time I see her work. I was instantly attracted to her gorgeous black-andwhite pieces with subtle hints of gold, and I find her vibrant color series to be equally as arresting.”

“ I am a huge fan of works from Africa and the Far East, so I love the sculptures and textiles at Douglas Dawson Gallery. For more contemporary Asian artists, I go to Andrew Bae Gallery. It carries my favorites, like Young June Lew. Her oversize pieces are mystifying.”

CURATOR LVL3 GALLERY “ When scouting for new artists, we look at their dedication to their practice, often following them and tracking their progress. I think it’s important for artists to stay busy both inside and outside the studio; we like to watch these things. When we look at an artist’s portfolio and find ourselves wishing we could own it all, we get excited. Right now, we’re thrilled to see some close friends making big moves: Keep an eye out for Liz Nielsen, Josh Reames, Matt Nichols, Adam Parker Smith, Evan Robarts, Lauren Clay, Sabina Ott and Sofia Leiby.” -VINCENT URIBE, LVL3GALLERY.COM

FASHION FORWARD NINA GARCIA

One of the most well-respected names in fashion, Nina Garcia loves design in all its many forms. Here, the editor and television personality shares her secrets for great style—both on the runway and off of it. What new runway trends would you like to see reflected in the home? The Seventies were a big trend this season. I think it would be interesting to see fabrics from that era—like suede, denim and patchwork—incorporated into the home in an elegant way. Which fashion designer would you love to see develop his or her own home collection? I love Fendi and Armani’s home lines. They fit well with my subdued, pared-down luxe aesthetic. I’m not much of a print or pattern person myself, but I would love to see Mary Katrantzou or Proenza Schouler do a textile collection. Your home features masterful layering, thanks to the wonderful rugs throughout. Why is investing in rugs so important? They lay the groundwork for the entire space, tie everything together, and add character to a room. There are many great places for rugs, but my favorites are Tai Ping, Doris Leslie Blau, Stark, Safavieh and Marc Phillips.

140 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

Let’s talk fabric. Do you find you’re drawn to the same textures for your wardrobe as you are for your home? When it comes to interior design, I am attracted to simple, neutral color palettes but very rich texture because, for me, that’s where you can bring personality in. I think the same could be said for my wardrobe. My bedroom curtains are cashmere, and I love a good cashmere sweater, as well. Same with a shaggy fur coat—on a pillow? Fabulous. Share your home design staples. I’m always hunting for Swedish midcentury furniture, textured carpets and unique pieces during my travels. They’re what I splurge on. What are your favorite shops and showrooms to visit when you’re at home in New York? I always stop into Gallery BAC. The selection is amazing, and Carlos Aparicio is a dear friend of mine who actually helped me decorate my apartment. I also like Maison Gerard, Karl Kemp Antiques and 1stdibs.

Check out her itinerary for a day in the northern part of the city here. neighborlyshop.com 9 a.m. For a day of shopping, grabbing a cup of coffee and a bite to eat is a must. My go-to spot is Beans & Bagels. They have the most amazing croissants; thinking about them makes me drool. 10 a.m. Once fueled, head to Andersonville, where you’ll find shops like Room Service, Found Vintage Living and Scout. They are all great if you’re looking for a statement piece to make a room pop. 11 a.m. Next, hit up the Broadway Antique Market followed by Ravenswood. While there, I love to frequent MegMade, Mint

Home and District (it runs by appointment only, so just be sure to call before you go). 12 p.m. Time for lunch! Walk over to The Roost Carolina Kitchen. The biscuit sandwiches are delicious, but I usually opt for the herbseasoned quarter bird with slaw on the side. 1 p.m. For unique finds from around the world, stop by Architectural Artifacts. I love their collection of tile. 3 p.m. Take a break from home shopping to pick out something sparkly at Hazel, which boasts cases and cases of jewelry, many from local makers.

4 p.m. If accessories are your thing, Alapash Home & Terrariums is a beautiful shop. Just walking through the door will give you inspiration. 5 p.m. Then, of course, stop in and see us at Neighborly. Check out our handmade lamps from Caravan Pacific and our incredible selection of artwork. We have lots to choose from. 6 p.m. What a day! It’s a good thing you’ve ended up across the street from Fountainhead, a wonderful spot for cocktail hour. I always order the fried pickles and an old-fashioned. Pure bliss.

This spring is all about surprising color combinations and pink and ruby have long been a fixture on the fashion scene with interiors following in close pursuit; Alexandra von Furstenberg’s sexy side table and Tai Ping's feathery carpet, to name a few. Industry giant Miles Redd loved the duo so much he chose it as a main palette for his Manhattan town house, right. “I wanted the space to feel like you were submerged inside of a raspberry soufflé,” explains Redd. “I’ve always been attracted to these colors because they feel so alive—and I love the backdrop pink provides for pictures.”

Case in point, French lighting brand La Chance fluently combines the pair in a mini-lamp flaunting a perforated shade and Carrera marble base, while Brooklyn wallpaper studio Calico displays their beauty on its handmade papers.

The hyper contrast that exists between navy and peridot combines all the carefree nuances of springtime. The playful palette also conjures notions of excitement and adventure, which was exactly the visceral reaction New York designer Sara Story sought to create in the dining room shown. “I love this fresh color combination,” says Story. “I’ve always enjoyed mixing opposing textures, materials and pops of color—in this case a vibrant chartreuse seat fabric was just the right accent to the stunning Gracie wallcovering.” Here, Fireclay's latest tile collection, Cool Motif, marries the two powerhouses perfectly.

Chicago designer Patrizio Fradiani of Studio F emphatically applied the electrifying duo of citrus and amethyst in this retro-fitted seating niche. “The inspiration was to provide a touch of glamour combined with bold colors,” he explains. “Though an unusual pair, they are quite complementary and their juxtaposition was intended to energize the space with summery notes to combat the gloomy Chicago winters.” Chanel’s dreamy new quilted shoulder bag embraces a cheery citrus tone while Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman’s sleek bench shows off amethyst in a more refined fashion, proving that this lively pair is here to stay.

boys club “It’s material that makes an object or space tactile,” muses Lauren Geremia, principal designer of San Francisco’s Geremia Design. And, when presented with a vast array of the season’s fabric offerings, Geremia opted for a serene palette of neutrals to create the refined, masculine space shown here that invites intimate gatherings and quiet conversation. “I wanted the dining space to be minimal but mature,” she explains, “selecting simplistic patterns and muted colors that allow an opportunity for layering and creating dynamic, textured compositions.” Rose Tarlow Melrose House “napkins” sit atop place mats fashioned from a Knoll Luxe material to ground the tablescape, while a Cowtan & Tout fabric dresses the vintage midcentury chair frames and Pierre Frey’s stunning abstract textile takes its place as artwork—all giving way to a neutrally color-coded dining room where masculine notes abound and simplicity speaks volumes.

YOUNG HUH

sitting pretty Designed to stop you in your tracks, this striking vignette fashioned by New York-based designer Young Huh proves that there is an art to making an entrance. “I imagined a welcoming spot where guests could arrive and be greeted with drinks and sweets,” says Huh. “My goal was to create an impactful area through contrasts in color and pattern.” To achieve her vision, Huh employed Schumacher’s Iconic Leopard fabric to flock the walls and adorned an accent pillow and the base of an ottoman with Duralee’s Eileen Kathryn Boyd collection. Rebecca Atwood’s playful spots find a home on a classic Bunny Williams stool, Beacon Hill’s Lilliflora textile, from the Ankasa Bespoke collection, drapes the table and Huh’s own fabric design for Peter Fasano graces the dining chair. “The more you mix, the more lively the room is,” says the designer, “what better stage for a little get-together.”

Hunt Slonem’s Fritillery for Groundworks takes flight on a decorative marble slab, while Slonem’s Catelayas 2 makes its way into a mirrored frame on the gallery wall. Navone’s Quai Branly cloaks the armchair to complete the scene. Says Uribe, “In this space, materials set the temperature but color and print dictate the mood.”

Eternity Each of us experiences the inside and outside of our lives on a daily basis. On the outside we arm ourselves in order to protect our internal life, our intimacy, our loved ones, and our personal beliefs. We have one face we share with the world, while watchful that nothing penetrates the sanctity of our internal peace. From inside we have all the windows to the world, but we only open them to the ones we trust. In “Eternity we live peacefully encompassed by the healing rose, symbolizing Compassion and Love.

ELIZABETH ROBERTS ARCHITECT ENSEMBLE ARCHITECTURE, DPC

Architecture: The Zio buffet’s strength is in its simplicity of form, the natural grain of the wood, and its long, low proportions. It’s classic. Creativity: As a whole, Zio feels both solid and subtle, while angled, rounded legs offer a whimsical element. I think we’re drawn to fun, accessible environments, and playful pieces like this create a nice juxtaposition to older, more detailed furnishings, art or architecture. Impression: A statement piece should be bold and noticed. This buffet’s refined details and sleek silhouette make it just that.

Design: The collection is unmistakably Rodarte. This rug gives the illusion of lace and a feeling of romance. Imagination: Each design speaks to fantasy and has an ethereal quality. The overlay technique has such organic movement. Storytelling: The provenance of objects in the home is truly meaningful. Every collected piece should tell a story and become part of your own narrative. Color: I am a big believer in color and love that the hues in this line are strong but not overpowering. The polished brass reflects the light and enhances it from a technical standpoint. This room is very layered and inviting. I started with white walls coupled with a gray terrazzo floor, which could have looked like it belonged in an airport if it wasn’t layered with tactile elements, such as the mohair rug. My jumping-off piece, though, was the Pierre Frey zigzag-pattern velvet on the armchair that provides plenty of texture. Although the house is modern, it was important for this space to feel welcoming. Talk to me about your mix of materials and vision for the space. We loved the green-and-gray palette. The gray originated in the bones of the house, found in the floors and metal roof. I then looked for teak furniture for its inherent warmth and compatibility with the home’s sapele mahogany windows. The natural look of the wood, along with the gray and green hues, is really reminiscent of a summer day. The artwork is so powerful and really speaks to that idea of summer. Tell me why you chose that particular piece. You would think that the artwork, detailing every leaf on a tree outside of artist Aspen Mays’ studio, was the first thing I brought in. It was actually acquired after the room was installed, chosen by the client for its rich color—it truly brings the outdoors in. What’s your philosophy when it comes to infusing subtle patterns and elements into a space? People often tend to overlook simplicity. Quiet materials and beautiful pieces allow the room to speak for itself. This client had an eye for simple beauty and I wanted to ensure that was felt throughout. From the textural contrast of the rope bookshelf to the natural linens, this room exudes and echoes a feeling of pureness and ease.

At first glance, you don’t notice the sofa peeking from the corner. It’s very interesting. Putting a sofa in the breakfast room just felt right for this space. Not only does it create a sense of comfort and casualness, but it also acts as a great room divider, separating this area from the adjoining family room. Who doesn’t like to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, and what better way to do so than on a sofa?

Tell me your trade secrets for making a breakfast room enduring and livable like this particular one. Choosing environmentally friendly and stain-resistant fabrics allows you to really live in a space without worrying, but there must also be a richness in materiality. The textiles I brought in, such as the workhorse fabric from Mokum found on the chair cushions and sheer draperies from Bergamo, epitomize this.

entrance foyer HiSTOriCAL DETAiLS iNSTiLL A SENSE Of TiMELESSNESS iN A BriGHT AND WELCOMiNG ENTry.

Tell me about the inspiration behind this space. We wanted a room that was traditional and approachable yet modern in its presence. The town houses sprinkled throughout London and Bath, England, really drove our aesthetic, as we were looking for timeless details mixed with fresh updates. Let’s talk details. The focus was to showcase the elegant Georgian woodworking while ensuring that it did not overwhelm the simplicity of the railing. Surprisingly, the meandering handrail and balustrade came late in the design. The forged iron looks soft black, but is, in fact, a blend of brown, black and deep purple. A continuous rail with no jogs allows the hand to glide gently along the banister as you walk up and down the staircase. The railing came out quiet yet elegant, highlighting the other facets of the room such as the woodwork, antique table and geometric stone floor. Speaking of geometrics, there are a lot at play that add to the visual interest here. The client chose the polished blackand-white marble floor tiles, which are perfectly balanced by the deep woods and the clean lines and color of the millwork that only helped to enhance the richness of the stone. The curves of the banister and custom oval window juxtapose the room’s angular overtones and invite a sense of playfulness. an in-depth exploration into what’s new and notable in kitchen design. written bY arlyn hernandez

THE NEW MODERN KITCHEN when it comes to modern kitchen design, there are two distinct schools of thought: one embraces the simplicity and sheer functionality with zeal, while the other remains unconvinced, preferring the welcoming aesthetic of a more traditional style. regardless of your persuasion, there’s no denying the downright impressive innovations and design gusto being cooked up as of late that could convert even the most classically inclined. From mechanically operated walls that conceal gadgets and storage to intuitive appliances that learn and adapt to your cooking methods, discover the latest ingredients making up the new modern kitchen.

1

CULINARY

ARTS

With the kitchen arising as the new epicenter of the home, bolder design is spicing up this bustling room. In this Hamptons residence, here and below, New York designer Guillaume Gentet created a personality-filled space using custom cabinetry by Effeti USA with whispers of lilac throughout. “People forget that the inside of a cabinet should be as pretty as the outside,” he says, referencing the violet (Pantone 7444 UP) of the island, which is echoed in the shelving concealed behind the wood panels. The owners’ art, like the Buddha sculptures by Marlene Rose, continues the artistic flavor of the room’s aesthetic.

2

THE FAUCET Every line and visible design element counts in a minimal space. Therefore, making major impact with a sculptural faucet, like Franke’s new Planar 8 Flex semi-professional version, is essential. The masculine, squared-off silhouette doesn’t just pack a visual punch, though; its 360-degree swiveling spout is highly functional and allows for maximum movement around the sink.

Color doesn’t have to be reserved for tableware and accents anymore: Large appliances, such as Bertazzoni’s Pro48 6G dualfuel range (shown here in a mouthwatering orange), are getting their turn in the shade game and becoming increasingly popular as owners seek to imprint their personal stamp onto every room of their home.

MASTER

CHEF

Designing kitchens for the past 40 years, it’s safe to say that Chicago-based Mick De Giulio knows a thing or two about what makes for successful culinary quarters. Here, the maestro lends some counsel and maps out what’s currently on his radar.

There’s no excuse for having a disorganized kitchen today with all the great solutions out there. What are some of your favorites? Motorized doors to hide nooks for small appliances and creating charging stations by putting USB ports inside of drawers are a go-to of mine. Another is a cabinet I recently designed called Metal Boy (shown above) for keeping pots and pans organized and accessible. It has recessed LED lighting so cookware is easily viewable and becomes like sculptural pieces. Metal seems to have become part of your signature look. How do you keep it from feeling too sterile? I love using silver nickel and polished stainless steel, but I always layer different materials and textures into my designs, sometimes even with very subtle changes. Honed and brushed stones, hand-scraped woods and fabrics for soft seating add comfort and are a great complement to the shine of metals. What’s exciting you right now? Steam ovens and induction cooktops. There’s so much you can do in a steam oven, from baking bread to roasting juicy meats, and induction has so many things going for it as far as safety and heat control.

5

WARM

FRONT

Modern kitchens tend to get a bad rap for being cold and industrial, but new material combinations are changing that rather unfair judgment. Maintaining a streamlined look, this design by Eggersmann integrates solid American walnut along the space’s periphery to soften the highgloss cabinetry and hard quartz surfaces.

7 talking KiTcHEn TEcH Gone are the days of one-dimensional appliances. Ranges no longer just cook; they’ll send a text to the family when dinner is ready. Need to pre-heat your oven but you’re still at the store? Your smartphone can get that started so it’s at the perfect temperature when you get home. Here, Lamont Gaines, showroom manager of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida, breaks down the newest innovations.

Smartphone capabilities are infiltrating the appliance market. What are some highlights? The ability to measure the temperature of your meal in the oven without being anywhere near the kitchen—let alone at home—via a digital thermometer is huge right now. Also, you can now download recipes into your oven and watch cooking tutorials via a Wi-Fi-enabled touch-screen panel on your range, which is so useful for the amateur cook.

Let’s talk about innovations in cooking. What new options exist? If you have the space to accommodate it, steam ovens (like Miele’s ContourLine M Touch Combi-Steam version at left) should be strongly considered. There are models that let you store personal profiles to steam your vegetables or fish to the exact tenderness preferred. Wine storage and serving systems are becoming more prominent in the custom kitchen. Any suggestions? Dual-zone refrigeration is the only way to go to keep your whites, reds and champagnes at the appropriate temperatures. There are also dispensing systems—check out the Discovery WineStation by Dacor—that will serve just the right amount, from a taste to a full glass, and preserve the freshness of the rest of the unused bottle.

6ended open

Indoor-outdoor living is king right now. Blurring the lines between inside and out is particularly successful in the kitchen, where incorporating plein-air cooking, al fresco dining and edible gardens satiates an entertaining-rich lifestyle. In this California home, I-Ching Ueng—designer and manager of Poggenpohl’s San Francisco showroom—stuck to a sleek design as not to compete with the lush garden just through the disappearing sliding glass doors. Silestone countertops in White Zeus Extreme and a stainless-steel panel backsplash reflect the sunlight to further enliven the space.

9 ON THE

8

THE HARDWARE Stainless steel may reign supreme, but gold and bronze details are giving the long-standing heavyweight a run for its money. The warm and luxurious finishes add a definite je ne sais quoi and can be employed on cabinets— like Rocky Mountain Hardware’s Empire pulls—or plumbing fixtures, and bridge the gap between the modern and traditional design arenas.

SURFACE

Slab stone such as marble and quartz has long been the go-to countertop material in the modern kitchen for its uniform look. Though its dominance in this arena certainly isn’t subsiding, there’s been a movement toward mixing it up with more personality-driven tilework for backsplashes, floors and feature walls. Hand-painted tiles lend a human touch to an otherwise pristine space. Though be advised: The graphic nature of this look is not for the demure design enthusiast.

HIDDEN

AGENDA

A brawny hood has always been a staple in a well-stocked kitchen, but they can be a bit of a blemish if the intent is to keep everything as simple and unassuming as possible. Enter the decorative ventilation option. These new devices are masters of disguise, hiding in plain sight in the shape of chandeliers and lighting fixtures, disappearing into countertops at the push of a button, or taking sculptural form like in Elica’s Space model that not only looks completely unexpected, but is also 35-percent quieter than traditional designs.

11 stable shelf

The customary formula for kitchen design reads as follows: upper and lower cabinetry, pantry, large appliances. However, open shelving concepts are breaking that mold. “We wanted a sense of openness and casual ease,” says California designer Vanessa Alexander of the kitchen space shown at left she remodeled for a Malibu beach house. “I avoid upper cabinetry as much as possible. Floating shelving provides a greater sense of space and can be dressed in such a flexible way with practical and décor items that lend life, color and texture.” Tip: Stick to a cohesive palette for any tableware on display to achieve a polished look.

12

Induction cooking has been a burgeoning trend in culinary technology over the past few years, competing side by side with its electric and gas counterparts. The newest offerings, such as Gaggenau’s CX 491 full-surface cooktop, right, are taking the already beloved advantages of speed and safety to the next level with intuitive free-positioning abilities. What exactly does that mean? Place cookware anywhere on the surface, and the stove will instantly detect its individual location, size and shape, heating up only that precise spot to the specified temperature. It’s so inherently practical, it’ll make you wonder where this functionality has been all along.

The lighthouse inspired rotunda is crowned with a domed ceiling with a center cupola that washes the interior with daylight, and the center-point of the foor is an inlaid stone compass rose – pointing to true north, of course. The wall panels and shaded sconces align precisely with the windows of the circular staircase, providing a series of unique glimpses of the property as you climb or descend.

Here Comes the Sun Thoughtfully placed at the southeast corner of the home, the sunroom offers a perfect spot for morning coffee with panoramic views of the sunrise. T

he aim of good interior design, many would say, is to capture the personality of one’s client within the tried-and-true principles of good proportion, color sensitivity and scale. This Chicago high-rise residence fulfills that ideal. “The spaces are as elegant as my client,” says interior architect and designer Scott Himmel. “This home really resonates with her style.” This was not always the case. Himmel had originally designed the Gold Coast residence for the owner and her former husband in what was then a new building with an exterior façade designed by architect Lucien Lagrange. Purchased as a raw space, the home’s interior was conjured by the designer with modernity in mind, but instead of walking into the sort of expansive, showit-all space dictated by more modern styles, Himmel remembers, “The wife was insistent on coming into a very discreet entrance hall and having the apartment and views revealed to you.” The resulting layout produced a grand formal enfilade of public rooms, yet it featured only three doors, thus balancing classicism with the more contemporary concept of open-plan interiors. The design was also replete with exquisitely crafted details executed by Power Construction Company, including floors of petit granit limestone in the entry hall and hand-scraped spalted maple elsewhere; leather-paneled closet doors trimmed with nailheads; extensive mahogany paneling, shelving, window and door frames; and, in the living room, a spectacular coffered mahogany ceiling polished to a dazzling glossy sheen. Then, six years ago, Himmel’s clients divorced, with the wife remaining in the home. Says the designer, “Now there was an opportunity to go back and redo what wasn’t exactly in line with her taste from the beginning.” The first things to go were two very masculine overstuffed living room sofas as well as the room’s rug, which was based on a Jean Arp design. “It had too much color and pattern for what I was trying to achieve,” says the homeowner. Designer and client soon began editing things down, making rooms feel airier, while at the same time livening up the palette. “Beige and brown were forbidden,” Himmel says. In their place, the designer picked up the colorful tones of his client’s artwork. “I’ve been collecting all my life,” she says of the works scattered throughout by such heavy hitters as Jim Dine, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Julian Opie, Larry Rivers and Wayne Thiebaud, to name a few. These hints of color can be seen in every part of the house. The living room now boasts a leaner custom sofa in a charcoal gray, while an Art Deco-style chair adjacent to it was upholstered in a hot pink velvet, chosen for its particular addition to the room’s color palette. A

“My range of design inspiration runs froM the 18th century to now.” -scott hiMMel bespoke steel-and-granite coffee table, inspired by the designs of midcentury French great Maxime Old, offers an angular component to the soft femininity of the chair fabric. Finally, the Arp-inspired rug was replaced with a simpler monochromatic silk blend that, in its distinct gray shade, provides a punch of saturated tone. In the library, Biedermeier chairs now showcase a more feminine purple velvet, and the Maison Carlhian-inspired custom sofa opposite is dressed in “almost an animal print, but not quite,” observes Himmel. “It was about taking a furniture piece and making it more glamorous.” Both designer and client are enamored of distinctive furnishings from various periods. “My range of design inspiration runs from the 18th century to now,” says Himmel, who, in fact, was an original founder of furniture brand Mattaliano, which specializes in European designs from the 1930s and ’40s. His new company, Truex American Furniture, is inspired by furnishings designed by great decorators of post-World War II New York, among others. Himmel’s passion for great design becomes manifestly apparent in the dining room, with chairs—scaled-up interpretations of an Egyptian-influenced chair by Jean-Charles Moreux—that he had conceived for the apartment’s original scheme, an iconic 1930s mirror and console by Giò Ponti, and a circa 1950 Jean Royère chandelier. “Her taste is extremely simple,” says Himmel of the homeowner. “But she’s fascinated by unusual things with a great provenance.” For the room’s new incarnation, Himmel designed a contemporary table with a black walnut chamfered-edge top on steel legs. Additionally, two works by leading American Pop artist Tom Wesselmann flank the doorway. “Over the last four years, the apartment has evolved to reflect more of me,” says the homeowner. “All of the rooms are much more comfortable, with each space flowing gracefully into the next as if it were multiple puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly. For now, it feels right.”

BUILDING BLOCKS influenced by chicago’s classic architecture, furniture designer elliot eakin crafts modernly minimal pieces meant to exemplify the detail of the material. written by lauren a. greene / photography by cynthia lynn

T

he legendary Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “Form follows function—that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” It is this same philosophy that drives furniture designer Elliot Eakin when creating his eponymous line. “I believe a piece of furniture should have an obvious function, but that doesn’t mean it can’t also be beautiful,” he says. “If you can get the proportions perfect and the materials just right, then the object really sings and that’s so exciting to me.” Growing up in Oak Park, Eakin had the fortunate opportunity to experience Wright’s work firsthand, as well as absorbed essential design principles while visiting sites with his architect father. But there is one memory in particular that stands out. “I remember we were once in this building and my dad called me over really excited,” recalls the designer. “I thought he was going to show me something really extraordinary, but instead he says, ‘Look at the simplicity of this floor plan that creates this perfect square with a circle inside it.’ ” That deep appreciation for detail resonated with Eakin and has become a hallmark of his work, which has racked up several prestigious accolades including an ICFF Studio award for new designers.

Eakin stands in Chicago-based Wagner Foundry, above, where his furniture pieces are cast. To begin the process, the foundry packs sand into molds to create the outline of Eakin’s furniture designs. Metal ingots are then placed into an urn where they are melted in a furnace. Finally, the resulting hot mixture is poured into the sand molds for casting.

248 / luxe interiors + design

Eakin’s sketchbooks reveal the furniture designer’s many ideas for his pieces, including the chair concept seen below. Named after one of Eakin’s friends, the Terrance side table, left, features a walnut base and marble stone top.

“Whether it be wood, upholstery or cast bronze, my approach has always been to highlight the material’s natural properties to my design’s advantage,” he says. His cast-silicon bronze Ages occasional table is a prime example. To showcase the material’s strength, Eakin connected the whole table near the base, while the entire top is cantilevered over three perfect non-connecting sections. Though ultimately he chose furniture design, architecture has continued to captivate him and that influence is apparent in his designs. In fact, when Eakin’s not working on his own line, he’s the senior furniture designer at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, where he creates pieces inspired by the firm’s building projects. Like the buildings Eakin grew up around, the beauty of his work lies in both its quality and permanence. “I’m not designing pieces that are disposable,” he says. “I want people to love what they buy and realize they are going to have it around to enjoy for a very long time.”

fter a couple who had been living in downtown Chicago expanded into a family of five, the search began for a more spacious home to raise their three children. Having outgrown their small town house, they found the space they needed in a Georgian Colonial with a sprawling backyard in bucolic Lake Forest. “My husband is from Lake Forest, and it’s a great place to raise kids,” says the wife. The 50-year-old house had undergone several renovations, however, leaving its interior with oddly segmented spaces that lacked flow, and as much as the couple loved the home’s classic architecture, they yearned to make the house more functional and give it a fresh look. To begin, the couple hired designer Kate Marker, along with builder and friend William H. McNaughton III. “They have a big family and they entertain a lot, so it was important to make the home not just a beautiful space, but comfortable for the kids and their extended family, as well,” Marker says. Respecting the neighborhood’s architectural vernacular was especially important to keep in mind. “The City of Lake Forest is very historically conscious, so we tried to stick with the original architect’s concept,” McNaughton says of the renovation of the entry. “The inspectors who came out from the city were very impressed with the construction and rebuild.”

A Lillian August daybed, upholstered in a modern striped linen, allows for conversations in the living room. Window treatments clad in a Kelly Wearstler fabric from Kravet hang from rods right at the ceiling to give the 8-foot-high room the illusion of greater stature. The skirted sofa is by Lee Industries.

For the interiors, the chief task was to make the floor plan more family-friendly. The kitchen was closed off from the main living space—a configuration the family had also dealt with in their previous home. “My husband is the chef of the family, so when we entertained, he was in the kitchen and everybody else was in the dining and family rooms,” the wife says. To remedy the situation, the team knocked down walls to open up the kitchen to the family room and breakfast area. Now, as dad whips up a meal, he can chat with the kids as they play in the main living area. In addition, the second-floor-supporting steel columns, which couldn’t be removed, were instead dressed up as decorative elements. “They still create a bit of a separation, but now you can see from the kitchen through to the other side of the house,” McNaughton says. The kitchen was also gutted and reconfigured for maximum functionality, with the husband carefully assessing the placement of appliances, and a new handy butler’s pantry was added. “The butler’s pantry now has a beverage fridge, with the kids’ juice boxes, so even the littlest one can get to them,” says the wife. Marker then brought in transitional furnishings to honor the home’s traditional bones while giving the space a renewed vibe. “It was really about adding modern touches with updated fabrics like a fun geometric pattern or a really clean leg on a piece of furniture,” she explains. The long,

skinny living room presented a design challenge, as well, so the designer added a Lillian August daybed that gave the room more flexibility. “It’s floating in the middle of the room to use as a sofa or chaise,” she says. “The legs are more traditional, but we put a modern fabric on it.” Meanwhile, the office also needed some sprucing up, so the team painted the existing cabinetry using an eco-friendly paint with a gloss finish. Whites and grays found throughout the space offer a fresh vibe, while the homeowners’ favored blues and greens were added through various furnishings and accents to provide splashes of color. Marker also incorporated patterns, such as herringbone, ikat and chevron, to delight the eye. “Patterns give a pop of interest, so we brought them into every room, whether it was with pillows, artwork or a rug,” she says. “One 256 / luxe interiors + design

of my favorite elements is the dining room wallpaper with its embroidered fabric ribbons; it gives the dining room some uniqueness. The wallpaper is a light color, so even though it has a black pattern, it really opens up the space.” Kid-friendly fabrics were also a priority. “We’re not the type of people who only let the kids eat in the kitchen,” the wife says. “They’re climbing over couches and jumping from here to there, so the family room really had to be livable. Kate was very helpful in finding fabrics that could handle three young kids.” For the furnishings, the designer incorporated durable fabrics, protected with Scotchgard; she even considered how children run around a room when choosing where to place them. Marker and the wife also came up with solutions to keep clutter at bay. In the family’s previous town house,

Sunpan stools pull up to kitchen countertops from Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies that coordinate with a backsplash from Surface Group International. The cabinets were purchased through Das Holz Haus. A Kohler faucet creates shine.

Marker used chairs by Verellen, upholstered in a vibrant textile from Hickory Chair, for a pop of color in the dining room. She also added a Pierre Frey wallcovering—from Holly Hunt—boldly patterned with embroidered black ribbons. The Visual Comfort chandelier was purchased through Kate Marker Interiors.

To comfortably seat the family of five in the narrow breakfast area, Marker chose a reclaimed wood table by Dovetail Furniture. Chairs by Gabby feature cushions in a Kravet fabric; pillows fabricated by Barbara’s Design Studio adorn the head chairs. The Ralph Lauren Home chandelier was manufactured by Visual Comfort. 258 / luxe interiors + design

coats and scarves were tossed near the front door, so they especially appreciated their new mudroom, complete with five cubbies—one for each member of the family. “Now the kids have a place to put their things,” the wife says. The architecturally distinctive home now functions for modern-day living, with a fresh style that provides the perfect backdrop for everything the family loves to do. “It’s a great house to entertain in,” the wife says. “We have barbecues in the summer, and in the fall, we’ve been doing more family-oriented activities, like Sunday afternoon chili parties. We’re really happy here.” Adds Marker: “I love how comfortable this house turned out. Every room feels very usable and inviting.” 262 / luxe interiors + design

S

ometimes it’s the faults in life that turn out to be the most fortuitous. This was certainly the case when, at 23 years old and a student at the University of Montana, multidisciplinary artist Lonney White decided to cast a desk entirely out of bronze. “It ended up costing $8,000 in materials and I can’t even imagine how much in time,” recalls White, who had to sell his car to cover costs. But the ambitious experiment yielded more than a piece of furniture; it produced a series of bronze drippings. “I had more fulfillment from those organic mistakes that puddled on the sand molds than I did from the desk itself, which I still have,” he says. “Through this, I learned the importance of embracing happy accidents.” White’s current venture—a collaboration with partner and designer Lukas Machnik—involves the conversion of a 7,000-square-foot building into a live/work/studio/office/showroom display for their many endeavors, but just a few short years ago the idea of filling an excess of square footage was a problem the artist could only dream about. After leaving the wide-open spaces of Montana—where he was casting 20-foot-tall sculptures out of steel and concrete—to study interior architecture and fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, White found himself lacking both the room and resources to continue his three-dimensional work. “My apartment was too small to support pieces of that scale,” recalls White, yet he was determined to find a method for using similar materials in a new way. The result was White’s unique painting process, which involves melting a metal alloy and ultimately setting the molten mixture into a bed of encaustic wax on a masonite board. “I compose on paper how I want things to look and feel but I’m open-minded to changing in midstream,” says White, who saw his star rise when his work caught the eye of Holly Hunt in 2011. “Occasionally, I take pieces from different spills and cut and put them back together, but the goal is for it to look effortless, like it came from one flow.” And, although there’s an end purpose, according to White, spontaneity is still at the center of all his work. “The majority of my work is always informed by space and architecture,” he concludes. “What drives the work is how it inhabits space.”

Artist Lonney White produces such one-of-akind bronze creations as the pieces shown left and the hanging sculpture right; all are displayed in his home’s studio/showroom space. White’s partner, designer Lukas Machnik, created the Monument chairs shown above.

“I COMPOSE ON PAPER HOW I WANT THINGS TO LOOK AND FEEL BUT I’M OPEN-MINDED TO CHANGING IN MIDSTREAM.” Above: An encaustic work created by White features a metal alloy painting process. F

or homeowners and builders Bruce and Linda Ritter, design inspiration is everywhere. “Seeing and building so many houses, you make a list of things you want in your own home,” Linda says. “We were coming from a very elegant Cape Cod-style, shingle-and-stone house, and we wanted something different for our next one.” The couple’s new space was informed by a melding of moments: a pleasant holiday spent at a friend’s lakeside retreat and their time living in Northern California, among others. To begin, the Ritters first put their ideas down on paper. “Prior to starting our building firm, Bruce was an art director in the advertising industry, and so he looks at things for proportion, materials, coloration and scale,”

Linda says. “He has a great eye for how something is going to look when it’s finished, and his vision contributed a lot to the style of our home.” Unable to pass up a corner lot just blocks from Hinsdale’s charming downtown, the duo sketched out the basic layout for the home they envisioned and took it to architect Richard Olsen to create the technical drawings. “It’s a bit of a hybrid,” Olsen says. A pair of gables flanks a dormer with a clerestory window that floods the great room with natural light. Vertical board-and-batten siding and painted common brick with copper elements lend a more casual feel to the home. “We’re taking some of the cues from Shingle-style homes and introducing a combination of materials and finishes,” Olsen explains.

The great room sofas, fabricated by Anees Upholstery, feature C&C Milano fabric from Holland & Sherry. Donghia chairs, in a textile from Cowtan & Tout, side a custom coffee table with a suede surface. A Watson Smith rug runs underfoot.

Above: O’Brien Harris fabricated the kitchen’s custom white cabinetry and cerused quarter-sawn whiteoak island for homeowners and builders Bruce and Linda Ritter. The range is from Abt.

That mix continues into the front foyer, where, in the center of the room, the hand-scraped white-oak flooring is inset with a leather panel detailed with nailhead trim. “We wanted a ‘wow’ factor when you walked through the front door,” says interior designer Tracy Hickman. “The leather was a way for us to break up all the wood on the first floor and do something different.” A frequent collaborator with the Ritters, Hickman was brought into the process early and was instrumental in creating the casual yet refined aesthetic that her clients envisioned. To create a sense of cohesiveness throughout the home, the designer developed a neutral color palette with materials and textures that repeat throughout. “Having a consistent theme helps fuse everything together,” Bruce explains.

An extension of the kitchen, the hearth room includes a pair of benches by Hickman covered in fabric from David Sutherland; they join a Christian Liaigre table that was refinished by Anees Upholstery. The pendant is from Tower Lighting and the custom chairs near the fireplace feature a Rogers & Goffigon fabric.

Throughout the first level, walls are clad with 8-inch horizontal tongue-and-groove paneling. “It gives the illusion that the house has a wider feel and makes those individual areas seem like one big space,” Hickman explains. In the spacious great room—which has vaulted beamed ceilings and clerestory windows—the designer selected a linen drapery fabric with a subtle stripe that echoes the paneling’s horizontal motif. She also incorporated linen in a darker shade on a pair of custom sofas, as well as in a lighter hue on a set of doors that hides a recessed cabinet housing a large television. “It’s this layering of neutrals,” Hickman says. “The design is really about texture and subtle valuations of color.” The quiet palette continues into the combination kitchen and hearth room, which was designed in collaboration by Hickman and the Ritters; kitchen designer Laura O’Brien of O’Brien Harris then brought their sketches to life. Two-inch white Calacatta marble countertops unify the white perimeter cabinetry with the island and butler’s pantry, which are composed of cerused quarter-sawn white oak. This material was also used to frame both the refrigerator—hidden behind white cabinetry—and the range with oversize hood. “The trick was to make the kitchen look beautiful and exciting but also like it’s still a working space,” Linda says. The long linear room—which includes a casual dining table with bench seating and a cozy area in front of the fireplace—has also become a favorite spot for guests to congregate during the couple’s soirees. “During parties,

The exterior of the home presents a fusion of influences and includes board-and-batten siding, painted common brick, shutters and copper accents. Premier Service’s Aaron Postma and Marilyn Maas created a structured yard that echoes the clean interiors.

there will be 12 people sandwiched into those benches,” Linda says. “I like functional spaces, but I also want them to feel welcoming and warm. As much as you try to get people out of the kitchen, they tend to stay there anyway.” Outside, Premier Service vice president Aaron Postma and senior landscape designer Marilyn Maas were able to create defined spaces using a variety of plant materials, their placement and hardscape elements. “Although white is the predominant color, a touch of blue was added as an elegant accent,” says Postma, who fashioned a soothing landscape that coordinates with the home’s interior. “The clients wanted a very structured yard that matched the clean interiors, and so we used columnar hornbeam, boxwood hedging and clipped upright yew, in addition to a low-stylized front garden wall.” Furthermore, the firm’s landscape designer, Heather Spera, worked with the homeowners to select annuals with interesting foliage. According to the Ritters, the house is everything they envisioned when they first sketched out its design— something they attribute to their team. “Our home is a portfolio that we take prospective customers through to show them our quality craftsmanship and detail,” Bruce says. “It was exciting to have an opportunity to put more of ourselves into a space that reflects who we are and the way our tastes have evolved.”

Left: French doors open to create a seamless flow between the hearth room and an outdoor sitting area, which is furnished with a sofa and metal-framed chairs from Restoration Hardware.
