EDITOR’S LETTER
a new view... The Tweak: it’s an ever-present verb for those of us in the business of design. Our days are consumed with upgrades and installs; recasts and transformations; alterations, punctuations and slightly-to-the-rights. A decade ago we began publishing Luxe Interiors + Design, and for this celebratory 10-year anniversary, we’ve done some refurbishing of our own with a refresh of our magazine pages. We’ve reassembled its parts in a way that makes for a better read. We’ve introduced more robust feature stories, revitalized the typography, and clarified the navigation of our departments. You’ll find news and discoveries for the season in “Radar,” the latest décor and product introductions in “Market,” and inspiring ideas for the home in “The Look.” Design never stands still, and we’ve certainly evolved over the past decade. What hasn’t changed much, however, is the mission of our magazine: to inform and inspire, cultivate ideas, and connect design enthusiasts with design talent. As always, and hopefully for the next 10 years and beyond, we hope you enjoy our magazine.

what’s intriguing you now in design? Fashion and interiors are mediums that have always fueled one another. The movement of materials, distinctive voice and thoughtful use of silhouettes are so inspiring on the runway. Elevating the everyday to art feels adventurous and brave. I want my interiors to carry that same sense of boldness and fun.
Having a moment: Post-war California design is always relevant. Most of what was made in that period was well-thought-out and crafted by technically skilled tradesmen.
kelly wearstler
looking forward to seeing... The Louvre Abu Dhabi. Jean Nouvel’s design is progressive and dramatic and, of course, the Louvre name is an institution. Art history is so dear to my heart. This marks the first time many of the greats have been exhibited in the Middle East. on the horizon for you: I’m launching my first bedding collection. It’s something I have felt passionate about and wanted to do for a long time. I have created so many bespoke projects for clients out of not being able to find exactly what I was looking for in the marketplace. trend watch: Marble and bronze are classic materials that add such depth and soul to a space. It was suggested to me somewhat recently that bronze is having a comeback, but for me, it never left. don’t miss this spring: “Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz” is super exciting. What an incredible, thoughtful and unique exhibit. It’s only through April 26, so try to catch it if you can. six degrees of separation: My home in L.A. was previously owned by the Broccoli family, whose patriarch produced many of the 007 movies. Naturally, I look to 1960s James Bond films for inspiration! Kelly Wearstler is an interior and fashion designer. She loves black and white, has rescued over 30 dogs and owns a ridiculous number of vintage scarves.

Can’t get enough of… Gerald McCabe. I’ve been buying as many of McCabe’s pieces in the last several years that I can get my hands on. I think he’s California’s Nakashima. Nakashima made production furniture, and that’s the sort of thing that was being made at McCabe’s studios in Venice in the 1960s through ’80s.
i wish i had never sold: I still lament a Doyle Lane clay painting that I owned for all of seven days and, in a moment of weakness, sold. That’s the one I never should have let go. Gerard O’Brien is the owner and curator of Reform Gallery, which he likens to a big adoption agency for vintage modernist furniture. Little known fact about O’Brien: You might catch a glimpse of him on a rerun of Law & Order.
images: Clockwise from top: Showcasing her signature mix of metals, this dining room and powder room (center) by designer Kelly Wearstler are replete with Hollywood Regency flair. A detail of artist Doyle Lane’s red tile mural from 1964 that Gerard O’Brien begrudgingly sold. Another ceramic piece by Lane.
on tap for reform: I’ve been programming a space within a space called the Landing, where I’ve mounted 13 shows over the last two years. The genesis was a desire to have a fine art gallery space within the store’s current location, as I had on La Cienega in the early days. I like the opportunity to focus on one artist or one moment. My little 700-square-foot platform here let me do that for a while. Now it seems the Landing is going to move to a new location in a new neighborhood, so stay tuned.
1
Face time: Reform will be exhibiting at the Los Angeles Modernism Show for the twelfth time. I still believe that going to fairs and seeing people one-on-one is a big part of this business. Some of my contemporaries have lost faith in that in the era of the Internet, but I hope they’ll come back around. To me, it’s still such an important piece of the puzzle. designer i wish was still working today… Paul McCobb, whose life ended much too soon in 1969 at the age of 51. I can’t help but collect his pieces.

Happening in L.a.: Mayor Eric Garcetti is doing great things for the city and he’s been so supportive of local and small businesses. As a small business owner, this kind of support is crucial. It is one of the reasons our local production is a core element of my brand. Go-to events of the year: The CFDA Fashion Awards in New York this June, and the Frank Gehry exhibit coming to LACMA in September. on tap for soCal: The transformation of Leimert Park by people like Mark Bradford is really exciting. His Art + Practice is a private arts and education foundation based in the historic Leimert Park neighborhood. A+P seeks to create a developmental platform that supports the acquisition of practical skills for foster youth and stresses the importance of creative activity in a larger social context.

in the pipeline for landscape design: I’m really intrigued by the relationship between green construction and innovative design, and I think myself and my peers are setting our eyes more and more toward environmental considerations. add to your agenda: Running through May 24, “Provocations: The Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio” at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art. British designer Thomas Heatherwick is a genius. keep your eye on: The architectural firm SelgasCano in Madrid.
Personal décor wish list: A chair by Patricia Urquiola and an Ed Ruscha print.
For the garden-obsessed: A visit to Huntington Gardens is almost a prerequisite. Also, Ganna Walska Lotusland, any given Sunday at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market and Angeles National Forest.
Barbara Bestor is the founder of Bestor Architecture. If she could, she would resurrect Brazilian modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi to design her home.

Happening in L.a.: I’m looking forward to seeing the completion of The Broad this September. I have seen it empty, and I can’t wait to see it full of art.
Having a moment: Ulla Johnson, Rachel Comey and Acne Studios are definitely on my radar right now. I also can’t get enough of Saint Laurent.
top 3 things to experience in California: The Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, Sea Ranch Lodge in Sonoma and the Esalen Baths by Mickey Muennig in Big Sur.
book i read on repeat: Beauty is in the Street: A Visual Record of the May ’68 Paris Uprising, by Johan Kugelberg and Philippe Vermés, or anything on artist Louise Bourgeois.

Clare Vivier is the creator of Clare V., known for its iconic L.A.-made foldover clutches and totes. The designer considers herself a particularly excellent reader of minds, and would love to splurge on a vintage gold watch.

Constant muses: Landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx and architect Luis Barragán greatly inspire my work. Judy Kameon is the founder of Elysian Landscapes. If she had the opportunity to switch jobs with anyone, it would be with powerhouse Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf…or a painter.
images: Clockwise from top right: This Toro Canyon residence by Barbara Bestor exemplifies the architect’s bohemian-modern style. Clare V.’s Sandrine bag from the Spring/Summer ’15 collection. MIX MASTERS
CUTTING-EDGE WORKS EMPLOY TECHNIQUES AS VARIED AS THE ARTISTS WHO CREATED THEM. WRITTEN BY JESSE BRATTER / PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS
ELISA GOMEZ MIXED MEDIA Whether it’s the energetic rhythms of an upbeat salsa number or the transportive sounds of a classical opus, all music moves Elisa Gomez in an indescribable way. The Austin-based abstract painter translates this feeling to canvas using brushes, palette knives or even her bare hands. The graffiti effect in Am I Free From This Dream #2, left, is a result of her fast-paced strokes and layered textures; it's part of her series with local composer Walter Nichols—a visual portrayal of his musical arrangements. Of her wish for viewers to have the same reaction to her art as she has to music, she says, “I hope people are taken to a deeper, more meaningful place.” elisagomezart.com
TROY SIMMONS CONCRETE Troy Simmons is so captivated by Brutalist architecture that he translates the vernacular to canvas, juxtaposing raw concrete against sleek pigments (see Durchbruch, left, shown vertically, and Serendipity, below). Approaching each piece like a construction project— his heaviest weighs 300 pounds—the Miami artist creates 3-D renderings and drawings before chiseling away at the cement. “My creative process reflects who we are as humans,” Simmons says. “We all carry complex yet beautiful experiences in our souls.” See his work this May at JanKossen Contemporary Art Gallery in New York. troysimmonsstudio.com
SARAH RASKEY MIXED MEDIA The Swarovski crystals in Sarah Raskey’s 24kt Gold and Glamour, above, is a good indication of the high fashion that permeates her work. The elegant result is a far cry from the mad-scientist process that gets her there: picture materials spilled over, others set on fire, and power tools strewn about her Chicago studio. “I love the dance that takes place among art, fashion and self-expression,” says Raskey, who, as an art therapist, helps others find healing through creativity. “I want viewers to feel that my art encourages the human spirit.” Raskey will be incorporating Maya Romanoff’s handmade textiles into her work for an exhibit at its Chicago showroom this April. sarahraskey.com

JAMIE LEE REARDIN ILLUSTRATION “When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a Disney animator, and my interests later expanded into fashion,” recalls Los Angeles-based fashion illustrator Jamie Lee Reardin. “I eventually fused these passions, and from my imagination emerged these gawky gazelles with long, impossibly thin silhouettes.” Their dramatic appearance, seen in Aline, left, speaks to Reardin's fascination with complex personalities like Cruella De Vil and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Her talents ultimately caught the eye of Dior Beauty's Dianne Vavra, which turned into the ideal collaboration. Now with each pen stroke and watercolor mark, she's surpassing her childhood dreams one character at a time. jamieleereardin.com
ELOISE CORR DANCH PAPER All Brooklyn artist Eloise Corr Danch needs to create her swoon-worthy works are her grandmother’s heavy metal scissors, X-Acto knives and a colorful imagination. Whether flowers, headpieces, illustrations or myriad other objects, it’s the endless color wheel and the way light reflects off its surface that attracts Danch to paper as her medium. Since her studies explored fashion history and construction, translating her floral creations for editorial fashion spreads and window dressings comes naturally—they've been used to embellish Diane von Furstenberg’s New York and Paris flagship stores, for one. “I love the play between the utility of clothes and the artistry and romance of fashion,” she says. “I hope the defining message of my work is beauty. Whether in the form of color, line or silhouette, I am always seeking to create something beautiful.” eloisecorrdanch.com

KELSEY BROOKES ACRYLIC
From an overlook at McWay Falls in Big Sur, California, Oakland artist Laura Plageman stands with her camera, marveling at the relationship between man and nature—the idyllic vista calling out to her, yet its inaccessible beach and falls remaining out of reach. In that vein, Plageman created a second image, left, that appears part illusory and part tangible, altering her original printed photo of McWay Falls and then photographing the result as a still life. Comprising her Response series, the photograph presents a seemingly impossible scene yet shows evidence of its construction through crumples and folds in the paper. “I delight in making an image that’s at once familiar and unfamiliar,” she says. “I want the viewer to look at the details and discover the image for themselves.” photolp.com
JEAN WELLS MOSAIC One look at Jean Wells’ mosaic-mirrored sculptures and it’s easy to see the influence of pop culture on her work. So it’s no surprise that when asked to name an artist favorite, she points to Wayne Thiebaud for reflecting food and humor in his paintings. Wells, too, turns to iconography and nostalgia when sculpting her fanciful objects and fast food re-creations using glass she cuts by hand; Conversation Piece, right, is an example of Wells recalling her youth. What's more, her mosaic soda bottles can be seen traveling the world this year as part of a Coca-Cola exhibition. “My motivation is spreading happiness,” muses the Seattle native. It’s a fitting mantra for an artist whose work gushes with sentimentality and whimsy. wellsart.com

For San Diego-based painter Kelsey Brookes, a scientistturned-artist, there is no left brain-right brain distinction. “You have one brain and it can become interested in whatever you purposely direct it toward,” he says. To this point, in his artistic endeavors, Brookes still explores cerebral patterns and molecular structure—but instead of examining them through a microscope, he maps them out on canvas using Golden acrylic paint and Winsor & Newton Series 7 sablehair brushes. In contrast to their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, as seen in his One Pointed Attention series, right, Brookes calmly creates his psychedelic works while listening to NPR or, sometimes, in total silence. Check out his molecular prints this spring at Quint Gallery in La Jolla, California, and see other works at New York’s Eric Firestone Gallery in June. kelseybrookes.com

Ignacia Murtagh’s personal connection to pre-Hispanic native cultures began in the place she calls home: Southern Chile. “I fell in love with Chile’s poetic tradition that reinforces design as the vehicle to turn tiny but relevant details of nature into useful and significant interior elements,” she says. As a young designer, Murtagh has always attributed her design sensibility to the exuberant geography of her surroundings. Her most recent project—a series of three side tables for Bernhardt Design—directs that credit to the Andes Mountains. “The Los Andes tables were inspired by mountains that are strong and imposing but at the same time graceful and slender,” she describes. This
sculptural elegance was achieved with the tables’ unpredictable heights, organic angles and contrasting sharpness. Murtagh spent a year with the designers at Bernhardt sketching, modeling and ultimately learning to work with a new material: wood. “Ceramics are malleable. You can accomplish complex designs in a short time and change elements quickly,” explains the designer. “Wood is out of your control. The character of the grain, colors and textures are expressed differently in every piece. Once you understand the material, however, wood becomes limitless.” Armed with an aesthete’s eye and an ever-growing material repertoire, Murtagh is proving to be just as limitless herself.

NO MEDIUM IS OFF-LIMITS FOR ARTIST DAVID WISEMAN, WHO TAPS SILK AS HIS NEW MUSE FOR A LIMITED-EDITION RUG DESIGN.
WRITTEN BY MIRANDA AGEE / PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ
Clockwise from top: David Wiseman’s limited-edition rug design for R & Company. The artist’s Glacier pendant in Smoke. A Lily of the Valley installation from a past solo exhibition of Wiseman’s at R & Company. A one-of-a-kind Collage fireplace screen in bronze and porcelain. This Small Geode vase in bronze is one of 25 made, each signed and numbered. A custom commission for a private New York residence.
Glass, bronze, porcelain: For artist David Wiseman, his material selections are as varied as his creations. His scene-stealing designs can be found all over the world, from large-scale porcelain installations for Dior boutiques in Shanghai and Tokyo—which he designed in collaboration with architect Peter Marino—to being a part of the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. Now, in partnership with R & Company, the Los Angeles-based Wiseman is taking his intricate skills to the ground level with a limited-edition rug design inspired by his travels and rooted in historical craftsmanship. Designer Todd Oldham gave you your big break. Tell us more about that. My first project was a nature-inspired hat hanger. Todd, who I had met when he was a guest lecturer for one of my classes at RISD, actually ended up ordering a bunch of them to give as gifts. Then, when I graduated college, he offered me a job. What are your favorite materials to work with? Bronze is endlessly fascinating to me. There are so many different alloys and patinas, and when you bring it up to a high polish, it’s a true work of art. How did rugs come into the picture for you? R & Company approached me with the idea to translate my designs into a rug collection. I went to Kathmandu to meet the weavers and to better understand their process. When I got there, I was blown away. Meeting them completely changed my concept because I needed to be as detailed as they were. Can you speak to the handmade aspect? It takes anywhere from six to eight months to create one rug and only 12 are being made in two distinct colorways. Because of the high quality of silk that they use, there are 4.5 million knots in each carpet.
Textiles are a new arena for you. Did you have to think differently? It started the same way I begin all of my designs, with pencil and paper, but I quickly learned that there is no room for error. The Tibetan and Nepalese communities of rug makers were so skilled at being able to capture the drawings they even wove my subtle eraser marks into one of the samples. How did your travels come to influence this particular project? The concept is about fusing my favorite patterns from around the world so I thought it would be appropriate to add a common Tibetan motif— such as billowing clouds—into the design. What else inspires you? I always turn to nature and its history in the decorative arts. I love seeing how different cultures have internalized nature and included it in their indigenous ornamental patterns. With everything you create, what are you always looking to achieve? Finding the poetic truth about what each material wants to become. I’m obsessed with that.

WHAT: Expect to see plenty of outtakes from (and behind-the-scenes glimpses into) Neustadt’s many magazine shoots, all of which are just as lovely and nuanced as those that ultimately make it into print. WHY: Through her lens, Neustadt elevates everyday life to art thanks to masterful lighting and a keen eye for composition. Follow her Instagram account and you’ll be convinced that maybe grocery shopping can be a little bit glamorous after all. IN HER WORDS: “I’m not afraid to show people my daily life on Instagram. IN PROCESS TRACY WILKINSON What happens behind the scenes in the studios of some of Southern California’s best craftsmen and artisans? For Los Angeles-based Tracy Wilkinson, creativity is about being motivated by the past to create something that’s new and has never been seen before, a passion she explores through her outside-the-box pottery and woven home goods. “I am heavily influenced by my upbringing and growing up in rural England in the Seventies, by the rolling hills and rounded organic shapes of the country,” she says, “but also by the hippie culture and postwar Brutalist architecture of the northern English towns. I think this provides the basis for almost everything I design. At the same time, though, I don’t have any interest in repeating history. I like to take those inspirations and create something completely new and modern.” store-la.com; twworkshop.com

“ We love Lucca Antiques for its selection of lighting and antiques. Many of its pieces include leather, copper and other materials that work well with the Spanish-style homes we design. The space is inspiring with its rustic and modern elements mixed seamlessly.”
“I would have to say that Peter Blake is one of the most well-respected and infl uential gallery owners locally. He is fearless and focused and a driver of bold contemporary art in the community. His presence here in Laguna has greatly influenced the art scene and raised the bar on talent.”
“ My favorite place for art and accessories is Natural Curiosities in Echo Park. Everything they have is high-quality and handmade in their own studio. I try to only work with nice people because they make my day happier and brighter, and everyone there is always rad and positive.”

CURATOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART
“Scouting for new talent for the museum requires a lot of listening. I have many conversations with friends and peers, writers and artists, and, of course, other curators. It’s important to pay attention to what’s going on in the scene. I love speaking with teachers at some of our incredible art schools in Los Angeles, too. It’s often a nice way to hear about younger artists from the people who know them best. Recently, I did an exhibition here at LACMA that included works in a variety of mediums from several local and national talents, such as A.K. Burns, Sarah Cain, Aaron Curry, Laura Owens and Christopher Wool, among others.” -FRANKLIN FRANKLIN SIRMANS, LACMA.ORG LAURA OWENS, UNTITLED

What new runway trends would you like to see reflected in the home? The Seventies were a big trend this season. I think it would be interesting to see fabrics from that era—like suede, denim and patchwork—incorporated into the home in an elegant way. Which fashion designer would you love to see develop his or her own home collection? I love Fendi and Armani’s home lines. They fit well with my subdued, pared-down luxe aesthetic. I’m not much of a print or pattern person myself, but I would love to see Mary Katrantzou or Proenza Schouler do a textile collection. Your home features masterful layering, thanks to the wonderful rugs throughout. Why is investing in rugs so important? They lay the groundwork for the entire space, tie everything together and add character to a room. There are many great places for rugs, but my favorites are Tai Ping, Doris Leslie Blau, Stark, Safavieh and Marc Phillips.

Let’s talk fabric. Do you find you’re drawn to the same textures for your wardrobe as you are for your home? When it comes to interior design, I am attracted to simple, neutral color palettes but very rich texture because, for me, that’s where you can bring personality in. I think the same could be said for my wardrobe. My bedroom curtains are cashmere, and I love a good cashmere sweater, as well. Same with a shaggy fur coat—on a pillow? Fabulous. Share your home design staples. I’m always hunting for Swedish midcentury furniture, textured carpets and unique pieces during my travels. They’re what I splurge on. What are your favorite shops and showrooms to visit when you’re at home in New York? I always stop into Gallery BAC. The selection is amazing, and Carlos Aparicio is a dear friend of mine who actually helped me decorate my apartment. I also like Maison Gerard, Karl Kemp Antiques and 1stdibs.

When the much-anticipated contemporary art museum The Broad opens to the public this fall at 221 South Grand Avenue, it will not only change the dynamic of the local arts scene in Los Angeles; it will also, very literally, alter the face of downtown. Thanks to an impressive honeycomb-inspired façade, designed by famed New York City architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the 120,000-square-foot structure is a veritable sculpture in its own right. Once completed, it will house almost 2,000 pieces of artwork from both The Broad Art Foundation and philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad’s private collection.” thebroad.org; dsrny.com 150 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

They’ve collaborated with museums like LACMA and the Hammer and are pushing the boundaries in floral design.
3 p.m. Located in the hopping La Brea Corridor, A+R is a must-see for unique, designcentric gifts and household items. Down the block, too, The Way We Wore is a vintage mecca. 5 p.m. Wrap up the day with a glass of chilled prosecco at Pizzeria Mozza. Designer Jake galang reveals a penchant for creating casually elegant interior spaces in her latest arcaDia proJect Infuenced by the French Provencal and Georgian periods, architectural designer Jake Galang set out to craf two entrely bespoke rooms for a palatal private residence in Arcadia, California, with the objectve to create ambiences that exuded luxury and informality at once. “This kitchen represents the new casual, understated lifestyle,” says Galang, principal of the Monrovia-based design frm Ilustración By Jake, Corp. Arguably the most cherished and frequented spaces in the home—the kitchen and master bath—Galang was enlisted with a tremendous task: create spaces that are congruous (with the rest of the home) yet are unique and distnctve in their own right. Additonally, the kitchen and bath needed to have high levels of sophistcaton and style but be completely engaging and functonal. Galang’s process focuses heavily on detail and nuance to achieve the design objectves. “I am obsessed with detail—every single selecton of material needs to be cohesive,” she asserts. “The kitchen backsplash has to be the right color and texture to work with the slab; and the hardware and lightng has to complement the cabinet design.” Architect: robert Tong of Sanyao international | Home Builder: Mur-Sol Construction | Photographer: Susan Pickering

PrimAl modern by michael olshefski
For sustainable furniture designer and maker Michael Olshefski, the process of transforming Earth-born materials into art is purely visceral—it’s as much a transformation of the self as it is the crafted object. “It is an intimate process that connects me with consciousness and nature,” Olshefski says. “The design begins with the selection of wood or other organic element that creates the emotional and spiritual essence within my work. I choose pieces based on an emotional intuition without knowing at the time what it may become.” With a desire to return to the simplicity and purity of handcrafting organic materials, Olshefski founded Primal Modern in 2014 to expand his architectural career. The Los Angeles-based studio specializes in luxury solid wood furniture, sculpture and home décor; each piece is one of a kind and speaks to a passion for design, precision craftsmanship and a reverence for nature. His work—timeless, organic and devoid of stains or dyes—is rooted in the ancient art and philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, as well as modern art, architecture and design. WabiSabi looks to nature and natural phenomenon for its inspiration and seeks beauty in often-overlooked aspects of nature.
Photography by Benny Chan, Fotoworks
“The Wabi-Sabi essence resides in the organic, primal qualities of the highly figured wood that form over its lifetime,” he says. “Where traditional woodworkers consider cracks, knots and unusual grain patterning to be imperfections, we celebrate this unique scenery.” Olshefski begins by interpreting both the dramatic and subtle details of cracks, grain patterning, color and form, which influence the name of each piece—Tiger, Dragonfly, Tranquility—and in turn, informs and inspires the design. “The wild variations are an essential presence of the tree, a window into its life and the spirit that creates the sublime beauty at the heart of every piece,” he enthuses. “We all have histories. So do my furniture and art.”

What do you strive to create in your work? What’s most important to you?
Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”?
What is the value of handcrafted furniture and art?
I love the emotional responses. A woman told me that a table reminded her of the cello she played as a child. Another man said a sculpture reminded him of gazing into a campfire.
Good design offers quiet splendor, captures the essence of artistic intent and evokes emotion. To accomplish this, we celebrate nature and the beauty in transition with every gorgeous piece.
It is not a luxury but a necessity. In a world of mass production and universal sameness, functional art is honest, meaningful, beautiful and built to last for generations.
Butterfly: Inspired by Japanese dining and tea ceremony tables. This hackberry table has a flowing, smoky grain pattern, intense figure and inlayed leather spine symbolizing the body of a butterfly.
Tranquility: Inspired by nature and bonsai. This serene dining table is highlighted by a fiddleback-figured white-oak top and a center spine that was conceptualized as a transformational, meditative bonsai garden.

Known for her artistic approach and inventive use of materials, Melbourne, Australia-based interior designer Fiona Lynch easily assembled this dynamic kitchen using our next twosome: gold and marble. Equally substantial on their own, a magical chord is struck when these two elements team up. Case in point, French lighting brand La Chance fluently combines the pair in a mini-lamp flaunting a perforated shade and Carrera marble base, while Brooklyn wallpaper studio Calico displays their beauty on its handmade papers.

The hyper contrast that exists between navy and peridot combines all the carefree nuances of springtime. The playful palette also conjures notions of excitement and adventure, which was exactly the visceral reaction New York designer Sara Story sought to create in the dining room shown. “I love this fresh color combination,” says Story. “I’ve always enjoyed mixing opposing textures, materials and pops of color—in this case a vibrant chartreuse seat fabric was just the right accent to the stunning Gracie wallcovering.” Here, Fireclay's latest tile collection, Cool Motif, marries the two powerhouses perfectly.

Chicago designer Patrizio Fradiani of Studio F emphatically applied the electrifying duo of citrus and amethyst in this retro-fitted seating niche. “The inspiration was to provide a touch of glamour combined with bold colors,” he explains. “Though an unusual pair, they are quite complementary and their juxtaposition was intended to energize the space with summery notes to combat the gloomy Chicago winters.” Chanel’s dreamy new quilted shoulder bag embraces a cheery citrus tone while Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman’s sleek bench shows off amethyst in a more refined fashion, proving that this lively pair is here to stay.

boys club “It’s material that makes an object or space tactile,” muses Lauren Geremia, principal designer of San Francisco’s Geremia Design. And, when presented with a vast array of the season’s fabric offerings, Geremia opted for a serene palette of neutrals to create the refined, masculine space shown here that invites intimate gatherings and quiet conversation. “I wanted the dining space to be minimal but mature,” she explains, “selecting simplistic patterns and muted colors that allow an opportunity for layering and creating dynamic, textured compositions.” Rose Tarlow Melrose House “napkins” sit atop place mats fashioned from a Knoll Luxe material to ground the tablescape, while a Cowtan & Tout fabric dresses the vintage midcentury chair frames and Pierre Frey’s stunning abstract textile takes its place as artwork—all giving way to a neutrally color-coded dining room where masculine notes abound and simplicity speaks volumes.

sitting pretty Designed to stop you in your tracks, this striking vignette fashioned by New York-based designer Young Huh proves that there is an art to making an entrance. “I imagined a welcoming spot where guests could arrive and be greeted with drinks and sweets,” says Huh. “My goal was to create an impactful area through contrasts in color and pattern.” To achieve her vision, Huh employed Schumacher’s Iconic Leopard fabric to flock the walls and adorned an accent pillow and the base of an ottoman with Duralee’s Eileen Kathryn Boyd collection. Rebecca Atwood’s playful spots find a home on a classic Bunny Williams stool, Beacon Hill’s Lilliflora textile, from the Ankasa Bespoke collection, drapes the table and Huh’s own fabric design for Peter Fasano graces the dining chair. “The more you mix, the more lively the room is,” says the designer, “what better stage for a little get-together.”

natural habitat Innately drawn to organic textures and wild prints, Dida Home’s David Miranda and Diana Uribe set out to create a bar scene perfect for cocktails, conversation and creative textile choices. “We had our mind set on using fabrics with earthy colors and organic shapes,” says Miranda, “giving way to a cheerful palette perfect for unwinding.” Starting with the drapery, where Chivaso’s Wild Jungle is layered adjacent to de Le Cuona’s quietly elegant Mali, the look continues with Dominique Kieffer’s Sousvide, designed by Paola Navone, seamlessly applied to the surface of the bar cart. Hunt Slonem’s Fritillery for Groundworks takes flight on a decorative marble slab, while Slonem’s Catelayas 2 makes its way into a mirrored frame on the gallery wall. Navone’s Quai Branly cloaks the armchair to complete the scene. Says Uribe, “In this space, materials set the temperature but color and print dictate the mood.”

On the outside we arm ourselves in order to protect our internal life, our intimacy, our loved ones, and our personal beliefs. We have one face we share with the world, while watchful that nothing penetrates the sanctity of our internal peace. From inside we have all the windows to the world, but we only open them to the ones we trust. In “Eternity we live peacefully encompassed by the healing rose, symbolizing Compassion and Love.

ELIZABETH ROBERTS ARCHITECT ENSEMBLE ARCHITECTURE, DPC
Architecture: The Zio buffet’s strength is in its simplicity of form, the natural grain of the wood, and its long, low proportions. It’s classic. Creativity: As a whole, Zio feels both solid and subtle, while angled, rounded legs offer a whimsical element. I think we’re drawn to fun, accessible environments, and playful pieces like this create a nice juxtaposition to older, more detailed furnishings, art or architecture. Impression: A statement piece should be bold and noticed. This buffet’s refined details and sleek silhouette make it just that.
SARA COLOMBO CURATOR NEST CASA
Design: The collection is unmistakably Rodarte. This rug gives the illusion of lace and a feeling of romance. Imagination: Each design speaks to fantasy and has an ethereal quality. The overlay technique has such organic movement. Storytelling: The provenance of objects in the home is truly meaningful. Every collected piece should tell a story and become part of your own narrative. Color: I am a big believer in color and love that the hues in this line are strong but not overpowering. I can see the Cobalt Motif design under the blue velvet couches in my sitting room.

Look: The celestial, space-age aesthetic of the desk brings me back to seeing the Milky Way at Ayers Rock in Australia. The onyx panel illuminates, like the quiet glowing band spread across the night sky in an abstract, almost haunting way. Designer: Dan Yeffet has a strong command of authorship running through his entire body of work. I love his adventurous material studies and conceptual thinking. Composition: The Peacock candleholders have a great mix of rich, opulent materials being utilized for such a primitive form of light. The polished brass reflects the light and enhances it from a technical standpoint. The simple structure of the two separate pieces coming together is intelligent and subtle, while the pieces themselves are cheeky and whimsical. Creativity: Artists should have fun playing with concepts or production methods. Imagination seems to be the way of driving innovation forward.

Composition: What appeals to me about the Asscher chandelier are the contradicting notions within the design. It is a daring piece that is geometrically composed yet remains unpredictable. It is both delicate and industrial, and worthy of discussion due to its play on form. The use of positive and negative space creates a pattern that is imposing but not heavy. Market: In today’s industry, there is a craving for creating both comfort and elegance. Sophisticated design does not have to be sterile. Authenticity shines through when a design expresses imagination. Installation: I would hang this piece in my studio space for cool inspiration as well as some necessary light.

Tell me about your inspiration. While envisioning the color palette, I found an image from a Chanel runway show featuring a model in a steel chiffon shirt and white beaded necklace. I asked myself how I could transform that look from runway to room. I also uncovered a photo of the perfectly aged, soft pink plaster walls of Jaipur’s City Palace, fitting as the client loves to travel. The combination of the two images’ color tones played so nicely together.
How did you ensure both style and functionality in this space? When designing a study, it’s crucial to dial into the needs of the clients and bring them to light in a beautiful way. I did that here with the tufting and curved lines of the chair, which adds softness to the room. The finish and scale of the antique desk creates a romantic element. The idea of the husband and wife sitting together, working, is just lovely. No outfit is complete without accessories. What finishing touches did you use here? It’s the contrast that makes things interesting. I chose to punch up the room with a contemporary painting to serve as a bold visual introduction. I wanted to create dimension by overlapping the painting over the paneling, leading your eye from the mercury lamps and antique marble obelisks to the embroidered taping on the draperies.

This space is so fresh and clean. Since this room is the first thing you’re greeted by when you walk into the home, we wanted to create a calm, elegant retreat for the family—a place of peace that’s both inviting and comfortable. We strived for a timeless look with touches of edginess—hinted in the gorgeous creamy swirls of the drapery fabric. The white, glossy paneled walls provide a strong sense of sophistication and a beautiful backdrop for the plethora of textures, patterns and neutrals.
How did you marry such a diverse blend of elements? We wanted the space to be brushed in monochromatic materials, so we created a layering of neutrals, letting them become a large part of the visual and textural statement. A silver crushed-velvet sofa offers modern lines and is the perfect metallic hue to balance the gold on the armchairs. We specially commissioned the art piece that’s both moody and soft, but also offsets all the neutrals with a fresh pop of color.
There are so many amazing pieces in this room. How did you achieve the right scale? Scale is incredibly important and can make or break a space. The one existing piece we had to work with was the grand piano. We wanted it to be a major placeholder while also not dominating the other pieces. This room is a place of rest for the family, so we also needed to have enough seating for everyone to be comfortable. Adding a tone of comfort really invites people to come in and stay a while.

This room feels airy and romantic. That is exactly what I was going for. This sitting room is meant to be a dreamy, inviting place that you want to sink into. Located on the west side of the home between the entrance foyer and master bedroom, beautiful sunset views set the stage. The leather Eames chair, silk-velvet sofa and ottoman, and satin wallcovering all achieve depth without too much contrast. What other elements create depth? My signature style is all about using texture and subtle color tones to create a certain look. I began with a soft gray, found in the wallcovering, complemented by touches of fresh white throughout. Adding in subtle accents, such as the celadon green, incorporated just the right amount of color. This room was meant to be soft and sensual as I like to create spaces that make you want to feel everything. You’ve traveled extensively. Was anything inspired by a specific journey? I used to travel to Paris on a regular basis and discovered Christian Liaigre’s furniture collection there. His products are a perfect fit in both modern and traditional homes. In this particular house, I was immediately attracted to the scale and lines of the sofa and ottoman. I also traveled quite a bit throughout Asia, which left permanent impressions in my memory. You can see hints of Asian influences in this room, such as the Ming aralia plant and embroidered lumbar pillow. Interior Design / Meg Joannides / MLK Studio, Inc. / mlkstudio.com. an in-depth exploration into what’s new and notable in kitchen design. written bY arlyn hernandez
THE NEW MODERN KITCHEN when it comes to modern kitchen design, there are two distinct schools of thought: one embraces the simplicity and sheer functionality with zeal, while the other remains unconvinced, preferring the welcoming aesthetic of a more traditional style. regardless of your persuasion, there’s no denying the downright impressive innovations and design gusto being cooked up as of late that could convert even the most classically inclined. From mechanically operated walls that conceal gadgets and storage to intuitive appliances that learn and adapt to your cooking methods, discover the latest ingredients making up the new modern kitchen.
1
CULINARY
ARTS
With the kitchen arising as the new epicenter of the home, bolder design is spicing up this bustling room. In this Hamptons residence, here and below, New York designer Guillaume Gentet created a personality-filled space using custom cabinetry by Effeti USA with whispers of lilac throughout. “People forget that the inside of a cabinet should be as pretty as the outside,” he says, referencing the violet (Pantone 7444 UP) of the island, which is echoed in the shelving concealed behind the wood panels. The owners’ art, like the Buddha sculptures by Marlene Rose, continues the artistic flavor of the room’s aesthetic.
2
THE FAUCET Every line and visible design element counts in a minimal space. Therefore, making major impact with a sculptural faucet, like Franke’s new Planar 8 Flex semi-professional version, is essential. The masculine, squared-off silhouette doesn’t just pack a visual punch, though; its 360-degree swiveling spout is highly functional and allows for maximum movement around the sink.

Color doesn’t have to be reserved for tableware and accents anymore: Large appliances, such as Bertazzoni’s Pro48 6G dualfuel range (shown here in a mouthwatering orange), are getting their turn in the shade game and becoming increasingly popular as owners seek to imprint their personal stamp onto every room of their home.
MASTER
CHEF
Designing kitchens for the past 40 years, it’s safe to say that Chicago-based Mick De Giulio knows a thing or two about what makes for successful culinary quarters. Here, the maestro lends some counsel and maps out what’s currently on his radar.
There’s no excuse for having a disorganized kitchen today with all the great solutions out there. What are some of your favorites? Motorized doors to hide nooks for small appliances and creating charging stations by putting USB ports inside of drawers are a go-to of mine. Another is a cabinet I recently designed called Metal Boy (shown above) for keeping pots and pans organized and accessible. It has recessed LED lighting so cookware is easily viewable and becomes like sculptural pieces. Metal seems to have become part of your signature look. How do you keep it from feeling too sterile? I love using silver nickel and polished stainless steel, but I always layer different materials and textures into my designs, sometimes even with very subtle changes. Honed and brushed stones, hand-scraped woods and fabrics for soft seating add comfort and are a great complement to the shine of metals. What’s exciting you right now? Steam ovens and induction cooktops. There’s so much you can do in a steam oven, from baking bread to roasting juicy meats, and induction has so many things going for it as far as safety and heat control.
5
WARM
FRONT
Modern kitchens tend to get a bad rap for being cold and industrial, but new material combinations are changing that rather unfair judgment. Maintaining a streamlined look, this design by Eggersmann integrates solid American walnut along the space’s periphery to soften the highgloss cabinetry and hard quartz surfaces.

7 talking KiTcHEn TEcH Gone are the days of one-dimensional appliances. Ranges no longer just cook; they’ll send a text to the family when dinner is ready. Need to pre-heat your oven but you’re still at the store? Your smartphone can get that started so it’s at the perfect temperature when you get home. Here, Lamont Gaines, showroom manager of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida, breaks down the newest innovations.
Smartphone capabilities are infiltrating the appliance market. What are some highlights? The ability to measure the temperature of your meal in the oven without being anywhere near the kitchen—let alone at home—via a digital thermometer is huge right now. Also, you can now download recipes into your oven and watch cooking tutorials via a Wi-Fi-enabled touch-screen panel on your range, which is so useful for the amateur cook.
Let’s talk about innovations in cooking. What new options exist? If you have the space to accommodate it, steam ovens (like Miele’s ContourLine M Touch Combi-Steam version at left) should be strongly considered. There are models that let you store personal profiles to steam your vegetables or fish to the exact tenderness preferred. Wine storage and serving systems are becoming more prominent in the custom kitchen. Any suggestions? Dual-zone refrigeration is the only way to go to keep your whites, reds and champagnes at the appropriate temperatures. There are also dispensing systems—check out the Discovery WineStation by Dacor—that will serve just the right amount, from a taste to a full glass, and preserve the freshness of the rest of the unused bottle.

Indoor-outdoor living is king right now. Blurring the lines between inside and out is particularly successful in the kitchen, where incorporating plein-air cooking, al fresco dining and edible gardens satiates an entertaining-rich lifestyle. In this California home, I-Ching Ueng—designer and manager of Poggenpohl’s San Francisco showroom—stuck to a sleek design as not to compete with the lush garden just through the disappearing sliding glass doors. Silestone countertops in White Zeus Extreme and a stainless-steel panel backsplash reflect the sunlight to further enliven the space.

THE HARDWARE Stainless steel may reign supreme, but gold and bronze details are giving the long-standing heavyweight a run for its money. The warm and luxurious finishes add a definite je ne sais quoi and can be employed on cabinets— like Rocky Mountain Hardware’s Empire pulls—or plumbing fixtures, and bridge the gap between the modern and traditional design arenas.
SURFACE
Slab stone such as marble and quartz has long been the go-to countertop material in the modern kitchen for its uniform look. Though its dominance in this arena certainly isn’t subsiding, there’s been a movement toward mixing it up with more personality-driven tilework for backsplashes, floors and feature walls. Hand-painted tiles lend a human touch to an otherwise pristine space. Though be advised: The graphic nature of this look is not for the demure design enthusiast.

HIDDEN
AGENDA
A brawny hood has always been a staple in a well-stocked kitchen, but they can be a bit of a blemish if the intent is to keep everything as simple and unassuming as possible. Enter the decorative ventilation option. These new devices are masters of disguise, hiding in plain sight in the shape of chandeliers and lighting fixtures, disappearing into countertops at the push of a button, or taking sculptural form like in Elica’s Space model that not only looks completely unexpected, but is also 35-percent quieter than traditional designs.

11 stable shelf
The customary formula for kitchen design reads as follows: upper and lower cabinetry, pantry, large appliances. However, open shelving concepts are breaking that mold. “We wanted a sense of openness and casual ease,” says California designer Vanessa Alexander of the kitchen space shown at left she remodeled for a Malibu beach house. “I avoid upper cabinetry as much as possible. Floating shelving provides a greater sense of space and can be dressed in such a flexible way with practical and décor items that lend life, color and texture.” Tip: Stick to a cohesive palette for any tableware on display to achieve a polished look.
12
Induction cooking has been a burgeoning trend in culinary technology over the past few years, competing side by side with its electric and gas counterparts. The newest offerings, such as Gaggenau’s CX 491 full-surface cooktop, right, are taking the already beloved advantages of speed and safety to the next level with intuitive free-positioning abilities. What exactly does that mean? Place cookware anywhere on the surface, and the stove will instantly detect its individual location, size and shape, heating up only that precise spot to the specified temperature. It’s so inherently practical, it’ll make you wonder where this functionality has been all along.

Families are gravitating toward the kitchen more and more for all aspects of living. Homework is worked on at the island, conversations are had at the breakfast bar, so it’s no wonder that the call for a more fluent dialogue between rooms is being answered. I
t was a cool and foggy spring day in San Francisco when Mark and Kim Dempster made their escape to a swanky hotel in sunny Palm Springs—where they proceeded to fall hard for the area’s retro vibe and flawless weather. “The desert warmth just gets into your bones and opens you up,” Kim says. Recharged and captivated by their sojourn, the Dempsters, who have two children, decided to put down some roots in the area, choosing a 1959 post-and-beam home by noted local architect Hugh Kaptur. Its picturesque location nestled into the mountains at the very end of a residential street cast a spell on them. “It’s enchanting,” says Kim. “The house is fun and playful, and there are views in all directions.” The project offered Kim, who owns Third Base, a company that develops luxury properties, a very personal opportunity to hone her design skills. Taking on the interiors herself, she turned over the task of expanding and updating the house to architect James Schmidt. “It was pretty much in its original condition but tired,” Schmidt says, so shag carpeting gave way to polished concrete and floor-to-ceiling double-glazed glass replaced the original single-glazed glass. “Now the house feels larger and more open.” Schmidt’s plan for the house included the element of surprise. “It unfolds slowly as one walks through and experiences it and discovers the unconventional spaces,” he says. To accomplish this, the architect created a pair of boxes paneled in cold-rolled steel, a material that echoes the hues of the nearby mountains—and will take on a patina in the desert climate. One holds the kitchen, a master closet and bathroom, and an outdoor shower; the other contains an additional master bath. “The boxes add another element of richness to the whole composition of the house,” Schmidt says. “The solid volumes are meant to contrast the light post-and-beam architecture.” For the interiors, the words “fun,” “relaxing” and “stylish” guided Kim’s choices. In the living room, she paired a vintage sectional by Paul McCobb with low-slung Sergio Rodrigues chairs and a custom wood cocktail table. The mod influences continue into the adjacent kitchen,

which includes a vintage dining table by Milo Baughman surrounded by a set of Brazilian rosewood chairs. The furnishings live against a backdrop of warm neutrals—the creamy sandstone shade of the concrete countertops, the earthy tones shooting through a Calacatta marble wall in a bathroom. “I took my color palette from the mountains, because I didn’t want to upstage the views,” she says. Kim, an art lover, came up with an inventive solution to bring it into the house. “Because there is so much glass throughout, there are few walls to hang art in the traditional sense,” she says. “So I was inspired to create art walls behind each of the beds.” In one master suite, leather panels feature a tooled sunburst. The motif pays homage to midcentury design, while the rays’ triangular shape nods to the area’s Native American roots. 260 / luxe interiors + design

The solid-brass cocktail table by Arturo Pani is a find from Downtown. A vintage Moroccan rug brings color and texture to the space.
One of Kim’s first purchases for the project, a bold burnt orange Moroccan rug, found its way not into the main house but into another of those steel boxes. Dubbed the “Love Shack,” the casita “is a burst of party energy,” she says, imbued with Swinging Sixties flair and bright color. Near the bed, Kim put up a retro hanging rattan chair and added a pair of brushed-brass and mushroom-hued velvet swivel chairs. Another art wall graces the space, the work of San Francisco street artists Alynn-Mags. Building the structure was not without its challenges, says contractor Mark Hahn. “We had to build a road, cut away the mountain, construct the casita and return it to its natural state,” he says. To reconstruct the hillside, 262 / luxe interiors + design
The casita cantilevers in two directions so that it seems to hover above the desert. To capture views of the mountain and valley, the addition has floor-to-ceiling doors on two sides. A covered terrace and the same steel panels visually link it to the main house, as does the polished concrete flooring.

landscape designer Marcello Villano hauled in 20 tons of boulders and planted brittlebush, red barrel cacti, palo verde and other desert plants. “They wanted it to be very natural looking,” Villano says, “like it wasn’t designed.” To tap into what Kim calls Palm Springs’ “retro patio culture,” the house boasts spruced-up spaces for outdoor living. An enlarged patio and a relocated pool feel like a contemporary take on Julius Shulman’s iconic photographs of Palm Springs. During cool evenings, the family enjoys sitting by the fire pit, the twinkling city lights below them. “There’s something about the mountains that’s healing,” Kim muses. “It’s kind of hard not to smile when you’re here.” 266 / luxe interiors + design

on’t try to put a label on Mimi Jung and Brian Hurewitz, the husbandand-wife team behind the Los Angeles-based creative studio Brook&Lyn. “These days, everyone is really multifaceted—you’re an artist and a designer foremost, but then you also make all these different things,” explains Jung, whose popular blog was the precursor to their nowburgeoning design practice. Indeed, the couple, who met years ago working at a New York design agency, thrive on the freedom to create without the constraints of a particular style or medium. A change of scenery provided their creative catalyst. Nearly four years ago, shortly after Hurewitz jumped ship from his full-time job to help transition Brook&Lyn into its next phase, the pair picked up and headed west. “I grew up in New York and was ready to be done with it,” says Jung. “I love the weather in L.A. and I was craving change.” Happily ensconced on the east side of Los Angeles, the couple began designing furniture. From a streamlined wooden bench with whimsical yarn accents to a sofa with a base made of solid polished-brass bars to a geometrically minded range hood, they have fashioned a distinct world where their minimally modern pieces all seem to fit together. “We didn’t find any range hoods we loved out in the 270 / luxe interiors + design
market so we said, ‘Why don’t we just make it?’ It’s a very organic process how our personal lives spill over to the studio side,” explains Jung. Besides their studio work, Jung has been pursuing another expressive avenue, crafting weavings inspired by nature, color and form. “We live up on a hill at the highest point so we can see mountains, sunsets and the sky all the time,” she says. “It’s not only influenced my woven pieces but when I look back on our studio work I’ve noticed that we’ve injected those same colors and styles, too.” As their work has evolved people have taken note, calling on the duo to now design custom items. “Making new things we never saw ourselves, designing, and then going through the process of trying to understand everything there is to know about that object and how it influences our clients’ lives,” says Hurewitz. “That’s what keeps things really fresh and that’s the direction we hope to keep moving in.” L

D “THE TASK WAS TO BETTER CONNECT THE HOUSE WITH ITS ENVIRONMENT.” -KIRK SAUNDERS

ramatically situated on a point in Bluebird Canyon above Laguna Beach, a house languished, unfinished, for years. As Delphine Berryhill says of her first glimpse, “It looked like something out a movie, a sort of ghost town at the end of a cul-de-sac, but the floor plan had big, wide-open spaces and the most spectacular views.” Although others might have run in the opposite direction, Delphine and her husband, Clay, instead saw the makings of their dream home and called on architect Kirk Saunders and designer Ohara Davies-Gaetano to realize their vision. For Saunders, the house presented an unusual opportunity—he had worked on the place for its previous owners. “When Delphine and Clay hired me to finish it, it was delightful because they wanted to live there, and I wanted to make it right,” Saunders says, and so he eagerly jumped back in. “The task was to better connect the house with its environment and to embrace the entire panorama of the view,” Saunders says. “In an attempt to reduce the apparent mass, we went with color-blocks in two shades of stucco, wood slats to add texture and copper details on the roofline to create a warmer feel.” Though it was a complicated undertaking, builders Jim Birmingham and Scott Franklin made it seem easy. “Remodels can be challenging, but we brought in the right team,” says Franklin. “It was all very clear and cohesive.” Anchored by a sculptural staircase of glass and walnut, the open main level encourages flow, a must for avid entertainers like the Berryhills. At one end, an ample kitchen gives way to a casual family room and an adjacent dining area. Opposite, formal living and dining areas open to a covered outdoor room. A corner bar, one of Clay’s requests, offers indoor-outdoor participation via bifold windows and a top that runs outside. Elsewhere, Saunders provided the couple space for more singular pursuits, including an intimate wine room and a home recording studio for Clay. For the interiors, the Berryhills gave Davies-Gaetano a simple, specific brief. “My husband loves Hawaii, and we wanted a place that seemed like we were on vacation,” says Delphine. “What was here lent itself to more of a resort feel. We wrapped our heads around that and came up with the term ‘island contemporary.’ ” Adds Davies-Gaetano, “Delphine is amazing, passionate, and she had a definitive vision for what emotions the house should evoke. Even though it was large, she wanted the rooms to be warm, inviting and comfortable.” To that end, a foundation of wide-plank walnut flooring was set and paired with an interior color palette of soft earth tones, pale oranges and greens. “It is light and open yet grounded,” she says. “It really plays on the organic theme.” Throughout, furniture selections were thoughtful and deliberate, incorporating both new pieces and some from the Berryhills’ own inventory. (Delphine provided
For Delphine and Clay Berryhills’ Laguna Beach home, architect Kirk Saunders devised an open plan conducive to entertaining; designer Ohara Davies-Gaetano imbued the interiors with a palette of warm neutrals. In the living room, a custom sofa, set on a rug by Tamarian, looks to a pair of Currey & Company armchairs. A painting by America Martin surveys the space.
Davies-Gaetano with PowerPoints of pieces the couple had in storage—and items that had caught her eye.) “I was very mindful that the pieces we used weren’t bulky and overpowering,” says Davies-Gaetano. “They needed to have unique details and to speak on their own as well as be part of a collection.” The wood-frame armchairs with decorative cane details in the living room are a perfect example, especially paired with the sectional and petrified slab wood coffee tables Davies-Gaetano designed. Lighting also played a significant role in DaviesGaetano’s approach. “We did a lot of research to find interesting fixtures that would function more like sculpture and play on the overall scale and architecture of the house,” she says. The lighting pairs with the Berryhills’ art collection, creating a dynamic dialogue. Custom fabric pendants over the dining room table, for instance, balance a Gauguin-inspired bronzed wall sculpture by Randy Morgan, while a bamboo-and-fabric 276 / luxe interiors + design
ball chandelier dangling in the stairwell sets off a painting by Jeff Peters. Conceived by landscape architect Daniel Stewart, the gardens and terraces reinforce the house’s on-vacation feel. “The lot was fairly large with a lot of topography, so we had the opportunity to create several unique outdoor spaces that invite exploration,” he says. “The overall landscape has a seamless flow between interior and exterior, and there is room for larger gatherings and space for more intimate groups.” Stewart opted for a Balinese flavor for the plantings, choosing a mix of tropical foliage and flowering plants with succulents woven in for a tapestry effect. The reimagined house is a far cry from its inauspicious beginnings. “Everything is integrated into the overall emotion and feeling of the space and resonates with both nature and the view,” says Davies-Gaetano. “You feel like you’re at this incredible resort, with the pool and bar. It’s a dream playground for adults.”

M
y paintings are abstract geographies depicting the landscapes that we navigate in life,” says San Diego artist Karina Bania. “They deal with the intangible depth that lies beneath the surface.” Moved by everything from the nearby ocean or a sunlit floor to a fashion spread or poem, Bania’s mixed-media works, alight with pale hues and subtle textures and layering, exude an air of whimsy. Beachy-modern compositions with a dreamlike quality, her art takes you on a journey, much like her own travels. “We create how we see the world,” she says. Growing up with a Philippines-born father, Bania spent her early years in Panama and Mexico City, where she was exposed to color, sound and emotion early on. “I think my dad genetically instilled in me the idea to wander and see the world,” she says. After studying business in college, she took a pilgrimage to Europe and Asia, where the cultural nuances—a more leisurely pace, the use of traditional materials—informed her work, which now includes a new collection of textiles. “Life is slower in a lot of these places,” Bania explains. “This is where my reoccurring themes of time and numbers were born. I am fascinated with the relationship between the movement of life and the stillness of a moment.” Her Indian sojourn studying art exposed her to the use of pigments and dyes, media that make their way into her paintings. Bania is often at work on two to three paintings at once and pulls her ideas from the boards she places around her studio. Seasonally curated, “the images, words and groupings serve as color and mood inspiration,” she says. “When I look at the images, I see them in a very abstract way. I study the shades, the lines, the shapes and layout. I am looking for what is hidden.” In the background, she listens to one of her carefully selected playlists. “I’m pretty ritualistic,” Bania says. “The same music is on repeat; there’s a zone I get into, and then I just feel my way into the painting and it begins to take shape.”
Working out of a studio in a 100-year-old San Diego Craftsman house that she had restored, artist Karina Bania, shown below, uses mixed media, including pastels, to create her multilayered paintings. Her own rich life experiences, as well as inspiration boards placed around the space, opposite, act as muses for both Bania’s works and her recently launched textile line. For her new collection of table linens, the artist filled notebooks with fabric and dye samples, bottom.

love anything vintage,” says designer Betsy Burnham. “If something’s authentic, that’s so meaningful to me.” So when the opportunity to reimagine a 1930s house in Santa Monica for longtime clients came to her and her partner, Max Humphrey, they leapt at it. “The proportions of the rooms are classic, and the built-ins are original,” she says. “It was my dream come true.” The homeowners, already at ease with Burnham’s and Humphrey’s deft way with pattern and color, were ready to go big. In their previous residence, also from the ’30s, “the spaces were smaller, so the bold statement didn’t have to be as bold,” Burnham says. “In this new home, we wanted to have some fun.” To that end, Burnham and Humphrey used fabrics, wallcoverings and carpets with eye-catching designs: geometrics, animal prints and folk and tribal patterns. This mix begins in the entry, where a vintage Qashqai rug mingles with side chairs covered in a leopard print and walls sheathed in a more traditional design. “I’m obsessed with wallpaper,” the wife says. “It brings color and pattern, and it’s unexpected.” A well-crafted palette holds the key to the mix’s success. As Humphrey explains: “The house feels really open.
When you’re standing in one room or a hallway, you can see a few other rooms, so the palette of the dining room had to flow with the entry, which flows with the great room.” Burnham adds, “Even though it looks like there’s all kinds of color, the palette is restrained. In the great room, for example, there’s a lot of brown, black and red. And there’s also a lot of white. We have a classic backdrop for this really layered Bohemian vibe.” Burnham and Humphrey brought a similarly dynamic feel to the furnishings. The home is bursting with eye candy, from the pagoda-style mirror in the entry to the vintage gilt Italian coffee table in the great room, a chinoiserie cabinet in an upstairs hallway and a raspberry lacquered campaign desk in the wife’s office. The design duo incorporated the family’s own pieces, too, giving a set of Frances Elkins-style chairs a spot in the great room. Though content to let the pair work their magic, the wife did offer the inspiration for the dining room table. “There was a vintage piece in a magazine that caught her eye,” says Burnham. “And so we worked with a local metalworker, redesigned it and built it custom.” With a polished-brass base and a generous 72-inch glass top, it commands the square room.
Quadrille’s Home Couture Persepolis wallpaper and a vintage Qashqai rug bring whimsical bursts of pattern and color to the entry, as does the Boussac Panthere de Somalie print from Pierre Frey on the vintage armchairs. Above the homeowners’ own antique table hangs a pagoda-inspired Forbidden City mirror by Bunny Williams Home, purchased from Mirror Image Home.

A Horchow mirrored chest provides a dash of glamour; the bed is from LawsonFenning. The tufted chair and ottoman, covered in velvet, are by Lee Industries.
The main goal was to jazz up the interiors, but the home also had to be livable. “The first time, they were just starting out. Now, they have three kids, so it’s a completely different ballgame,” Burnham says. “We were mindful that they were going to be playing hard and living hard, so in some cases, we used outdoor fabric indoors. And we also incorporated medium-to-darker colors for the bigger pieces. Everything is kid-friendly but still very stylish.” Although they made no structural changes to the house, Burnham and Humphrey planned the existing spaces to make the most of them. The great room, for example, comprises three functional areas—a TV-watching space with a big sectional sofa; an adjacent cocktail area, where the grown-ups can enjoy a drink while the kids are watching television or playing Xbox; and a spot with a game table that doubles as an extra dining table. The designers maintained the home’s original built-in cabinets, but they made a small adjustment in the great room for modern living. “Those fabulous bookcases go around that big room, but there wasn’t enough space for a modern-day television,” Burnham says. “So we did a little bit of a redesign on the front cabinet so it could house a flat-screen TV and audiovisual equipment underneath.” Outside, landscape designer Lizz Speed maintained the house’s 1930s spirit while providing lush, functional spaces for a 21st-century family. “I leveled the front yard and created a new walkway and entrance,” Speed says. She also removed a large, failing tree and replaced it with a bench that pays homage to it. “The clients can sit there and have coffee and watch their kids play,” she says. Roses, privet hedges, flowering plum trees and Little Gem magnolia trees dot the property. Around back, Speed created plenty of space for entertaining. As much as the house’s vintage charms were a dream come true for Burnham, her clients’ openness was equally delightful. “We’ve worked with Betsy and Max for a long time, so there’s a trust level,” says the wife, now happily settled with her family in their vibrant new digs. “Usually, their first choice is also mine.” Adds Burnham, “They’re always up for things that will inspire conversation, and that’s exciting.” 304 / luxe interiors + design
