a new view... The Tweak: it’s an ever-present verb for those of us in the business of design. Our days are consumed with upgrades and installs; recasts and transformations; alterations, punctuations and slightly-to-the-rights. A decade ago we began publishing Luxe Interiors + Design, and for this celebratory 10-year anniversary, we’ve done some refurbishing of our own with a refresh of our magazine pages. We’ve reassembled its parts in a way that makes for a better read. We’ve introduced more robust feature stories, revitalized the typography, and clarified the navigation of our departments. You’ll find news and discoveries for the season in “Radar,” the latest décor and product introductions in “Market,” and inspiring ideas for the home in “The Look.” Design never stands still, and we’ve certainly evolved over the past decade. What hasn’t changed much, however, is the mission of our magazine: to inform and inspire, cultivate ideas, and connect design enthusiasts with design talent. ones to watch: I am enamored of the work of British designer Ilse Crawford of Studioilse. Though honestly, I’m a big fan of the “un-designed.” I love the lived-in homes of real people, especially those with lots of interests, hobbies and collections.
recent design purchase: Marthe Armitage wallpaper for my dining room. Armitage is an English artist who started designing in her seventies and is now in her mid-eighties and really hitting her stride. I love her work and her story. Jessica Helgerson is an interior designer and founder of Jessica Helgerson Interior Design in Portland. She’s always wanted to be tasked with designing a hotel.

Top 3 things in Portland for the design-obsessed: I connect with the work that the Museum of Contemporary Craft brings in; the Oregon College of Art and Craft is great for wandering around campus and checking out all the great work being done there; and Beam & Anchor. I feel like that store and the things that fill it are so reflective of the Portland design culture. on your horizon: I’m busy creating an installation art gallery in the front of our new office. It’s an old building from the 1860s with huge windows and super-high ceilings. I’m pretty smitten with it at the moment. looking to splurge on: I have a crush on the Ib Kofod-Larsen Elizabeth chair; unfortunately, there are very few out there. I wish someone would license and 2 reproduce them. Unexpected inspirations: Factories of all sorts get my gears churning. I love the weird building shapes that occur when form follows function and aesthetics are not a factor.

can’t wait for… The Seattle Art Fair this summer. It will bring international artists and galleries to the Pacific Northwest in unprecedented numbers; plus, our local gallery owners and curators will be working together to ensure this year’s fair will be like no other.

and Terry Richardson’s realism is beginning to ease and an appetite for more complex imagery is developing on the high end. current intrigues in art and design: I’m all about a return to a more curious and modern approach to design. After the recession, it was all about looking back to this archetypal grandfather figure who makes everything by hand in an old woodshop out back. You know, the kind of guy who used to walk to school and back in the snow. It is an important aspect of design, but we also need the overly excited child running with scissors if we want to progress. There is a balance that is needed. I think we are finally starting to look forward again and let our inner child run. On tap for you: I have opened a full-service design/ communication company called BC.AD for discerning clients who need more than the latest Fortune 500 trends.

It is allowing people to discover and be discovered in ways that were not possible before. looking forward to… Design is getting playful again. People are starting to experiment with new materials and ideas. With photography, on the other hand, I think we are going to see a return to a more artisanal approach. can’t get enough of… Everything Ladies & Gentlemen Studio is making and Lukas Peet Design’s Slab series of lighting. Not to miss this spring: “The New Frontier: Young DesignerMakers in the Pacific Northwest,” which is an exhibit I co-curated with the Bellevue Arts Museum featuring the work of 30 of the best young designers and makers from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, on display through August 16. Charlie Schuck is a photographer based in Seattle. He owns a ridiculous number of astronomy prints and books from the 18th and 19th centuries…and can take a nap nearly anywhere.
keep an eye on… The work of designer Sarah Bergmann. She plans to alter the American landscape with her Pollinator Pathway project. It would link all national parks in the United States with interconnected green belts as a way to help rebuild the country’s population of pollinators, which are critical to the production of our fruits and vegetables. Dream project: I’d love to design a school for kids that focuses on design—architecture in particular. Of course, I’d like to construct the curriculum, too. A design education must revolve around building a well-rounded skill set that balances an understanding of art, science, history, physics and high technology with hands-on, technical know-how. On your playlist: Sub Pop Records is a music label from the Pacific Northwest that rose to fame in the late 1980s when they signed bands like Mudhoney, Nirvana and Sleater-Kinney. Today, they’re still producing music I listen to and really like, such as new releases from TheeSatisfaction and Shabazz Palaces. seattle’s next big thing: I’m looking forward to James Corner Field Operations’ redesign of the entire Seattle waterfront. The plans for the project replace a crumbling viaduct that cuts Seattle off from Elliott Bay and will significantly transform our city. The design is brave and ambitious, and if it’s fully realized, it will be amazing. Alan Maskin is an architect based in Seattle. As a partner and principal at the revered firm Olson Kundig Architects, he finds inspiration everywhere—from the beauty of nature to the freshly roasted green chilies he has for breakfast at his favorite Mexican retreat.

ELISA GOMEZ MIXED MEDIA Whether it’s the energetic rhythms of an upbeat salsa number or the transportive sounds of a classical opus, all music moves Elisa Gomez in an indescribable way. The Austin-based abstract painter translates this feeling to canvas using brushes, palette knives or even her bare hands. The graffiti effect in Am I Free From This Dream #2, left, is a result of her fast-paced strokes and layered textures; it's part of her series with local composer Walter Nichols—a visual portrayal of his musical arrangements. TROY SIMMONS CONCRETE Troy Simmons is so captivated by Brutalist architecture that he translates the vernacular to canvas, juxtaposing raw concrete against sleek pigments (see Durchbruch, left, shown vertically, and Serendipity, below). SARAH RASKEY MIXED MEDIA The Swarovski crystals in Sarah Raskey’s 24kt Gold and Glamour, above, is a good indication of the high fashion that permeates her work. The elegant result is a far cry from the mad-scientist process that gets her there: picture materials spilled over, others set on fire, and power tools strewn about her Chicago studio. “I love the dance that takes place among art, fashion and self-expression,” says Raskey, who, as an art therapist, helps others find healing through creativity. “I want viewers to feel that my art encourages the human spirit.” Raskey will be incorporating Maya Romanoff’s handmade textiles into her work for an exhibit at its Chicago showroom this April. sarahraskey.com

ELOISE CORR DANCH PAPER All Brooklyn artist Eloise Corr Danch needs to create her swoon-worthy works are her grandmother’s heavy metal scissors, X-Acto knives and a colorful imagination. From an overlook at McWay Falls in Big Sur, California, Oakland artist Laura Plageman stands with her camera, marveling at the relationship between man and nature—the idyllic vista calling out to her, yet its inaccessible beach and falls remaining out of reach. In that vein, Plageman created a second image, left, that appears part illusory and part tangible, altering her original printed photo of McWay Falls and then photographing the result as a still life. Comprising her Response series, the photograph presents a seemingly impossible scene yet shows evidence of its construction through crumples and folds in the paper. “I delight in making an image that’s at once familiar and unfamiliar,” she says. “I want the viewer to look at the details and discover the image for themselves.” photolp.com
JEAN WELLS MOSAIC One look at Jean Wells’ mosaic-mirrored sculptures and it’s easy to see the influence of pop culture on her work. So it’s no surprise that when asked to name an artist favorite, she points to Wayne Thiebaud for reflecting food and humor in his paintings. Wells, too, turns to iconography and nostalgia when sculpting her fanciful objects and fast food re-creations using glass she cuts by hand; Conversation Piece, right, is an example of Wells recalling her youth. What's more, her mosaic soda bottles can be seen traveling the world this year as part of a Coca-Cola exhibition. “My motivation is spreading happiness,” muses the Seattle native. For San Diego-based painter Kelsey Brookes, a scientistturned-artist, there is no left brain-right brain distinction. “You have one brain and it can become interested in whatever you purposely direct it toward,” he says. To this point, in his artistic endeavors, Brookes still explores cerebral patterns and molecular structure—but instead of examining them through a microscope, he maps them out on canvas using Golden acrylic paint and Winsor & Newton Series 7 sablehair brushes. In contrast to their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, as seen in his One Pointed Attention series, right, Brookes calmly creates his psychedelic works while listening to NPR or, sometimes, in total silence. Ignacia Murtagh’s personal connection to pre-Hispanic native cultures began in the place she calls home: Southern Chile. “I fell in love with Chile’s poetic tradition that reinforces design as the vehicle to turn tiny but relevant details of nature into useful and significant interior elements,” she says. As a young designer, Murtagh has always attributed her design sensibility to the exuberant geography of her surroundings. Her most recent project—a series of three side tables for Bernhardt Design—directs that credit to the Andes Mountains. “The Los Andes tables were inspired by mountains that are strong and imposing but at the same time graceful and slender,” she describes. This
sculptural elegance was achieved with the tables’ unpredictable heights, organic angles and contrasting sharpness. Murtagh spent a year with the designers at Bernhardt sketching, modeling and ultimately learning to work with a new material: wood. “Ceramics are malleable. You can accomplish complex designs in a short time and change elements quickly,” explains the designer. “Wood is out of your control. The character of the grain, colors and textures are expressed differently in every piece. Once you understand the material, however, wood becomes limitless.” Armed with an aesthete’s eye and an ever-growing material repertoire, Murtagh is proving to be just as limitless herself.

Glass, bronze, porcelain: For artist David Wiseman, his material selections are as varied as his creations. His scene-stealing designs can be found all over the world, from large-scale porcelain installations for Dior boutiques in Shanghai and Tokyo—which he designed in collaboration with architect Peter Marino—to being a part of the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. Now, in partnership with R & Company, the Los Angeles-based Wiseman is taking his intricate skills to the ground level with a limited-edition rug design inspired by his travels and rooted in historical craftsmanship. Designer Todd Oldham gave you your big break. Tell us more about that. My first project was a nature-inspired hat hanger. Todd, who I had met when he was a guest lecturer for one of my classes at RISD, actually ended up ordering a bunch of them to give as gifts. Then, when I graduated college, he offered me a job. What are your favorite materials to work with? Bronze is endlessly fascinating to me. There are so many different alloys and patinas, and when you bring it up to a high polish, it’s a true work of art. How did rugs come into the picture for you? R & Company approached me with the idea to translate my designs into a rug collection. I went to Kathmandu to meet the weavers and to better understand their process. When I got there, I was blown away. Meeting them completely changed my concept because I needed to be as detailed as they were. Can you speak to the handmade aspect? It takes anywhere from six to eight months to create one rug and only 12 are being made in two distinct colorways. Because of the high quality of silk that they use, there are 4.5 million knots in each carpet.
Textiles are a new arena for you. Did you have to think differently? It started the same way I begin all of my designs, with pencil and paper, but I quickly learned that there is no room for error. The Tibetan and Nepalese communities of rug makers were so skilled at being able to capture the drawings they even wove my subtle eraser marks into one of the samples. How did your travels come to influence this particular project? The concept is about fusing my favorite patterns from around the world so I thought it would be appropriate to add a common Tibetan motif— such as billowing clouds—into the design. What else inspires you? I always turn to nature and its history in the decorative arts. I love seeing how different cultures have internalized nature and included it in their indigenous ornamental patterns. With everything you create, what are you always looking to achieve? Finding the poetic truth about what each material wants to become. I’m obsessed with that.

What happens behind the scenes in the studios of some of the Pacific Northwest’s best craftsmen and artisans? For Portland-based Matthew Philip Williams, creativity is about using the appropriate materials to capture a simple aesthetic that in turn elicits a desired feeling in his pieces. “My design process starts with attempting to really understand the purpose and function of whatever it is that I’m making, including ergonomics, the space that it’s going in, what it holds or supports, what it’s next to and eventually what it looks like,” he says. “I try to be as straightforward as possible within the design phase and go through a minimal amount of editing so as to not make things too cloudy. One of the most well-respected names in fashion, Nina Garcia loves design in all its many forms. Here, the editor and television personality shares her secrets for great style—both on the runway and off of it. What new runway trends would you like to see reflected in the home? The Seventies were a big trend this season. I think it would be interesting to see fabrics from that era—like suede, denim and patchwork—incorporated into the home in an elegant way. Which fashion designer would you love to see develop his or her own home collection? I love Fendi and Armani’s home lines. They fit well with my subdued, pared-down luxe aesthetic. I’m not much of a print or pattern person myself, but I would love to see Mary Katrantzou or Proenza Schouler do a textile collection. Your home features masterful layering, thanks to the wonderful rugs throughout. Why is investing in rugs so important? They lay the groundwork for the entire space, tie everything together, and add character to a room. There are many great places for rugs, but my favorites are Tai Ping, Doris Leslie Blau, Stark, Safavieh and Marc Phillips.

let’s talk fabric. Do you find you’re drawn to the same textures for your wardrobe as you are for your home? When it comes to interior design, I am attracted to simple, neutral color palettes but very rich texture because, for me, that’s where you can bring personality in. I think the same could be said for my wardrobe. My bedroom curtains are cashmere, and I love a good cashmere sweater, as well. Same with a shaggy fur coat—on a pillow? Fabulous. share your home design staples. I’m always hunting for Swedish midcentury furniture, textured carpets and unique pieces during my travels. They’re what I splurge on. What are your favorite shops and showrooms to visit when you’re at home in new York? I always stop into Gallery BAc. The selection is amazing, and carlos Aparicio is a dear friend of mine who actually helped me decorate my apartment. I also like Maison Gerard, Karl Kemp Antiques and 1stdibs.

The team at LMN Architects took the Seattle Design Festival’s challenge to set “design in motion” literally. For its contribution to the yearly celebration hosted in November 2014, the studio spearheaded a project that would allow it to work with local designers to craft moveable, collapsible street furniture that would inspire citizens to head outdoors—providing cool, contemporary spots for conversation, study and play. The series of nine pedestrian-scale installations, titled “Pop-Up! boys club “It’s material that makes an object or space tactile,” muses Lauren Geremia, principal designer of San Francisco’s Geremia Design. And, when presented with a vast array of the season’s fabric offerings, Geremia opted for a serene palette of neutrals to create the refined, masculine space shown here that invites intimate gatherings and quiet conversation. “I wanted the dining space to be minimal but mature,” she explains, “selecting simplistic patterns and muted colors that allow an opportunity for layering and creating dynamic, textured compositions.” Rose Tarlow Melrose House “napkins” sit atop place mats fashioned from a Knoll Luxe material to ground the tablescape, while a Cowtan & Tout fabric dresses the vintage midcentury chair frames and Pierre Frey’s stunning abstract textile takes its place as artwork—all giving way to a neutrally color-coded dining room where masculine notes abound and simplicity speaks volumes.

sitting pretty Designed to stop you in your tracks, this striking vignette fashioned by New York-based designer Young Huh proves that there is an art to making an entrance. “I imagined a welcoming spot where guests could arrive and be greeted with drinks and sweets,” says Huh. “My goal was to create an impactful area through contrasts in color and pattern.” To achieve her vision, Huh employed Schumacher’s Iconic Leopard fabric to flock the walls and adorned an accent pillow and the base of an ottoman with Duralee’s Eileen Kathryn Boyd collection. Rebecca Atwood’s playful spots find a home on a classic Bunny Williams stool, Beacon Hill’s Lilliflora textile, from the Ankasa Bespoke collection, drapes the table and Huh’s own fabric design for Peter Fasano graces the dining chair. “The more you mix, the more lively the room is,” says the designer, “what better stage for a little get-together.”

natural habitat Innately drawn to organic textures and wild prints, Dida Home’s David Miranda and Diana Uribe set out to create a bar scene perfect for cocktails, conversation and creative textile choices. “We had our mind set on using fabrics with earthy colors and organic shapes,” says Miranda, “giving way to a cheerful palette perfect for unwinding.” Starting with the drapery, where Chivaso’s Wild Jungle is layered adjacent to de Le Cuona’s quietly elegant Mali, the look continues with Dominique Kieffer’s Sousvide, designed by Paola Navone, seamlessly applied to the surface of the bar cart. Hunt Slonem’s Fritillery for Groundworks takes flight on a decorative marble slab, while Slonem’s Catelayas 2 makes its way into a mirrored frame on the gallery wall. Navone’s Quai Branly cloaks the armchair to complete the scene. Says Uribe, “In this space, materials set the temperature but color and print dictate the mood.”

I think we’re drawn to fun, accessible environments, and playful pieces like this create a nice juxtaposition to older, more detailed furnishings, art or architecture. Impression: A statement piece should be bold and noticed. This buffet’s refined details and sleek silhouette make it just that.

It is both delicate and industrial, and worthy of discussion due to its play on form. The use of positive and negative space creates a pattern that is imposing but not heavy. Market: In today’s industry, there is a craving for creating both comfort and elegance. Sophisticated design does not have to be sterile. Authenticity shines through when a design expresses imagination. Installation: I would hang this piece in my studio space for cool inspiration as well as some necessary light.

What was your thought process when dreaming up this space? As I thought about the design, I was reminded of the peace I once felt sitting by a mountain stream, watching clouds race across the sky. An interior space can become a kind of abstract landscape, with the same sense of balance and movement we find in nature. This dining area reflects a mixture of that serenity and movement.
This space really speaks for itself. If you design and place pieces that carry on a dialogue between themselves and the architecture, then the space will be filled with life even if no people are present. It was a revelation to stand and see the subtle interaction between the room and all the pieces I had designed. It was like a dinner party filled with fascinating people! The serpentine curves of the chandelier and table truly convey that idea of movement. The unfolding roof shape is dynamic, yet the organic lines of the custom light fixture anchor the space. The table echoes the lines of the light fixture with two slabs of black walnut separated by a sinuous open slot partially filled with aluminum joining pieces; the zig-zag pattern introduces another rhythm to the space. Crafted pieces bring tremendous value to a project as they show the touch of the human hand.

This space feels very collected. The clients desired a space with a global lounge-like feel—think Moroccan cigar lounge. They wanted me to incorporate the two antique side chairs into the room, so I was challenged to find a way to work those into the overarching theme. Luckily, the clients had been world travelers for many years, bringing back trinkets and treasures, which lent to a storied collection for many of the main pieces. I love it when a space is eclectic and filled with special objects, each with their own story.
Did you highlight any features original to the home? The arched bookcase and fireplace are both original to this 1930s home, so I wanted to find a way to keep their authentic charm intact while also enhancing them and providing them with their own distinct feel. I gave special treatment to the bookcase with metallic Schumacher quatrefoil wallpaper—the pattern adds to the diversity of the room. To enhance the authentic tile surrounding the fireplace, I chose a dark wall color paired with a gold fireplace screen.
Tell me about your textural choices for the design. I brought in beautifully rich fabrics in both traditional and contemporary patterns. A large-scale suzani fabric is paired with a contemporary pattern for pillows on the chesterfield. A geometric pattern was used on the two antique Gothic-inspired armchairs. Even the overdyed patchwork rug has that special worn feeling; it was custommade out of antique gray, brown and blue rugs. I always strive to make texture and pattern inherent in every interior space I design.

What was your jumping-off point? I wanted to take cues from the original details of the home, which was built in 1911. Also, I like uncluttered, simple bathrooms, so my personal preference was to keep the space clean and classic. My starting point was the black-and-white floor tile. I had already added beautiful hand-painted flowers in the entrance foyer of this home and it seemed fitting here to recreate a classic flower pattern used in homes during this time. I then chose a subway tile for the walls in this beautiful Rice Paper color that, upon closer inspection, has a faint ring around the perimeter, which I highlighted with a matching deep gray grout. What about that teal hue? I finished the cabinet in this beautiful teal oil paint that I originally stumbled upon as a sample in the cabinet builder’s workshop. I instantly knew I wanted to use that color somewhere in the home. In certain lighting it almost appears black, but when the sun is shining through the window, the richness of the color really comes out. How did the brass come into play? To keep the room from feeling too sterile, I added brass fixtures and hardware. The brass helped create a certain richness with touches of glamour and warmth. The mirrors are my favorite pieces in the space as they are replicas of 1930s wall consoles from France. I like a clean, quiet space where everything is done for a reason and not because of a trend. With the kitchen arising as the new epicenter of the home, bolder design is spicing up this bustling room. In this Hamptons residence, here and below, New York designer Guillaume Gentet created a personality-filled space using custom cabinetry by Effeti USA with whispers of lilac throughout. “People forget that the inside of a cabinet should be as pretty as the outside,” he says, referencing the violet (Pantone 7444 UP) of the island, which is echoed in the shelving concealed behind the wood panels. The owners’ art, like the Buddha sculptures by Marlene Rose, continues the artistic flavor of the room’s aesthetic.

THE FAUCET Every line and visible design element counts in a minimal space. Therefore, making major impact with a sculptural faucet, like Franke’s new Planar 8 Flex semi-professional version, is essential. The masculine, squared-off silhouette doesn’t just pack a visual punch, though; its 360-degree swiveling spout is highly functional and allows for maximum movement around the sink.

Designing kitchens for the past 40 years, it’s safe to say that Chicago-based Mick De Giulio knows a thing or two about what makes for successful culinary quarters. Here, the maestro lends some counsel and maps out what’s currently on his radar.
There’s no excuse for having a disorganized kitchen today with all the great solutions out there. What are some of your favorites? Motorized doors to hide nooks for small appliances and creating charging stations by putting USB ports inside of drawers are a go-to of mine. Another is a cabinet I recently designed called Metal Boy (shown above) for keeping pots and pans organized and accessible. It has recessed LED lighting so cookware is easily viewable and becomes like sculptural pieces. Metal seems to have become part of your signature look. How do you keep it from feeling too sterile? I love using silver nickel and polished stainless steel, but I always layer different materials and textures into my designs, sometimes even with very subtle changes. Honed and brushed stones, hand-scraped woods and fabrics for soft seating add comfort and are a great complement to the shine of metals. What’s exciting you right now? Steam ovens and induction cooktops. There’s so much you can do in a steam oven, from baking bread to roasting juicy meats, and induction has so many things going for it as far as safety and heat control.

Maintaining a streamlined look, this design by Eggersmann integrates solid American walnut along the space’s periphery to soften the highgloss cabinetry and hard quartz surfaces.

7 talking KiTcHEn TEcH Gone are the days of one-dimensional appliances. Ranges no longer just cook; they’ll send a text to the family when dinner is ready. Need to pre-heat your oven but you’re still at the store? Your smartphone can get that started so it’s at the perfect temperature when you get home. Here, Lamont Gaines, showroom manager of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida, breaks down the newest innovations.
Smartphone capabilities are infiltrating the appliance market. What are some highlights? The ability to measure the temperature of your meal in the oven without being anywhere near the kitchen—let alone at home—via a digital thermometer is huge right now. Also, you can now download recipes into your oven and watch cooking tutorials via a Wi-Fi-enabled touch-screen panel on your range, which is so useful for the amateur cook.
Let’s talk about innovations in cooking. What new options exist? If you have the space to accommodate it, steam ovens (like Miele’s ContourLine M Touch Combi-Steam version at left) should be strongly considered. There are models that let you store personal profiles to steam your vegetables or fish to the exact tenderness preferred. Wine storage and serving systems are becoming more prominent in the custom kitchen. Any suggestions? Dual-zone refrigeration is the only way to go to keep your whites, reds and champagnes at the appropriate temperatures. There are also dispensing systems—check out the Discovery WineStation by Dacor—that will serve just the right amount, from a taste to a full glass, and preserve the freshness of the rest of the unused bottle.

Indoor-outdoor living is king right now. Blurring the lines between inside and out is particularly successful in the kitchen, where incorporating plein-air cooking, al fresco dining and edible gardens satiates an entertaining-rich lifestyle. In this California home, I-Ching Ueng—designer and manager of Poggenpohl’s San Francisco showroom—stuck to a sleek design as not to compete with the lush garden just through the disappearing sliding glass doors. Silestone countertops in White Zeus Extreme and a stainless-steel panel backsplash reflect the sunlight to further enliven the space.

THE HARDWARE Stainless steel may reign supreme, but gold and bronze details are giving the long-standing heavyweight a run for its money. The warm and luxurious finishes add a definite je ne sais quoi and can be employed on cabinets— like Rocky Mountain Hardware’s Empire pulls—or plumbing fixtures, and bridge the gap between the modern and traditional design arenas.
SURFACE
Slab stone such as marble and quartz has long been the go-to countertop material in the modern kitchen for its uniform look. Though its dominance in this arena certainly isn’t subsiding, there’s been a movement toward mixing it up with more personality-driven tilework for backsplashes, floors and feature walls. Hand-painted tiles lend a human touch to an otherwise pristine space. Though be advised: The graphic nature of this look is not for the demure design enthusiast.

A brawny hood has always been a staple in a well-stocked kitchen, but they can be a bit of a blemish if the intent is to keep everything as simple and unassuming as possible. Enter the decorative ventilation option. The customary formula for kitchen design reads as follows: upper and lower cabinetry, pantry, large appliances. However, open shelving concepts are breaking that mold. “We wanted a sense of openness and casual ease,” says California designer Vanessa Alexander of the kitchen space shown at left she remodeled for a Malibu beach house. “I avoid upper cabinetry as much as possible. Floating shelving provides a greater sense of space and can be dressed in such a flexible way with practical and décor items that lend life, color and texture.” Tip: Stick to a cohesive palette for any tableware on display to achieve a polished look.

Induction cooking has been a burgeoning trend in culinary technology over the past few years, competing side by side with its electric and gas counterparts. The newest offerings, such as Gaggenau’s CX 491 full-surface cooktop, right, are taking the already beloved advantages of speed and safety to the next level with intuitive free-positioning abilities. What exactly does that mean? Place cookware anywhere on the surface, and the stove will instantly detect its individual location, size and shape, heating up only that precise spot to the specified temperature. What design direction are new homes and remodels taking in Sun Valley? historically, sun Valley architecture has been something known as mountain architecture. log and river rock once dominated, but new influences are entering the landscape. rustic influences are now based on the parkitecture movement, and mountain modern is being mixed into the building environment, which is enlivening the architectural perspective. How would you describe the ethos of those who choose to call Sun Valley home? there is a common thread for many of us who have made the Valley home. For me, adventurous and community-minded free spirits describe the ethos.
commercial spaces. the design pair’s firm, M Design and Interiors, has reinvigorated a time-honored mountain-centric aesthetic with contemporary influences and vibrant color accents. dawson, a graduate from the new york school of interior design, is a 17-year design professional in sun valley; morawitz, a graduate from the University of north carolina at chapel Hill, has spent the last 12 years in sun valley. together, the design luminaries have created interior spaces in a broad range of design styles. “We have no set style and are comfortable with any aesthetic, whether it is contemporary, transitional or traditional,” dawson says. “there is such a range today, you have to be versed in all and interpret those styles to the client’s vision.” the “range” that dawson refers to speaks to a growing and varied sun valley population. the designers point to an expanding design vernacular. “With a variety of people and tastes, nothing about design here needs to feel

he Seattle home of Madzy Besselaar and Ian Taylor presents a combination of Zen-like calm and welcoming sociability immediately upon arrival. Emphasizing a sense of tranquil escape, architect David Coleman designed a courtyard that beckons the owners and their guests to walk across a small bridge over a sunken landscape of plantings to reach the entry door. But after passing a modest foyer festooned with orange and blue geometric paintings by a family member, the floor plan opens up onto the great room where, thanks to designer Holland Stephens, the dining table takes center stage beneath a chandelier made from glass ball-shaped pendants that are hung at different elevations. “The dining area is the central element of the house very deliberately,” says Madzy. “It sets the tone right away.” Not only is it a spot for dinner parties, but the wood floors and an adjacent piano also allow the

owners to slide the table to one side and create an impromptu dance floor. “We’re a big music family,” she adds. “We all get on the piano. There’s singing; there’s guitars—it’s quite entertaining.” Madzy and Ian were ready to move on from their former confined Craftsman house and its neighborhood of busy streets and high hills, and were looking for a more contemporary open plan where their family could easily congregate and enjoy being together inside and out. When the couple found a midcentury modern house in the Broadmoor neighborhood surrounded by a halfacre of landscape and barely visible from the curb, they knew it could make for the kind of urban oasis they sought. “That’s what I fell in love with first,” Madzy says. “Most other houses are right on the street. Here you feel like you’re not in the city at all but in a refuge.” Coleman came on board to extensively renovate, repurpose and expand the existing house to better suit the owners’ wish list and lifestyle, with builder John Korhumel

Architect David Coleman clad the exterior in sapele, an African hardwood, which was also used for cabinetry inside the home. The existing stone garage wall was partially covered in vines to tie in with the surrounding half-acre of landscape featuring deciduous trees, ferns and ornamental grasses.

overseeing construction. Originally designed in 1956 by noted architect William Bain Sr. and having undergone a remodel in the ’70s, the home had a storied past and great potential. Salvaging a portion of the old structure and remaining true to its casual nature, the team built largely anew to add square footage and make the layout more open and full of light, and to further merge building and landscape. “We wanted to create a building that was modern but had a timeless quality,” Coleman explains. The interiors were designed with a processional quality, with one room opening onto the next. To blur the lines between the indoors and outside, almost all of the spaces, be it the living and dining areas or the kitchen and master bedroom, wrap around an extensive meadow filled with deciduous trees, ferns and ornamental grasses, fashioned by Coleman as part of his holistic approach to design; he enlisted the help of landscape architect Bruce D. Hinckley of Alchemie to collaborate here and at the entry courtyard. Oversize lift-and-slide doors and glass panes further that indoor-outdoor connection and bathe the interior with natural illumination along with a series of shafts that bring light deep inside the house, including the master suite. “You feel like you’re outside even when you’re not. But it’s a private lot, so you don’t feel like somebody’s watching you in your bathrobe,” says Korhumel, who credits superintendent Scott Knobbs for precise execution down to the last millimeter. In addition to that central dining room, the kitchen also makes for a natural gathering spot, be it during parties or as Madzy cooks for the family. Above the kitchen island, Coleman designed a floating ceiling plane he calls the cloud that “gives a sense of intimacy to the space, and makes the room feel a little more like a destination,” he says. “It really does seem like it’s floating.”

This architectural element is one of many instances where Coleman created warmth in the open, modern home by changing ceiling heights, creating wall partitions, or implementing rich architectural materials. For furnishings, Stephens had a head start on tailoring the home to the family’s needs and tastes, as Madzy had spent years collecting magazine clips and pictures in binders. “Madzy had been dreaming for quite some time,” says Stephens, who added a dose of familiarity to the project as she happens to be married to Korhumel. “That goes a long way to jump-start a project, when you’re really inside their head.” The result is a simple palette of natural materials and neutral colors, punctuated by the clients’ vibrant art collection. “We were challenged with the owners’ desire to use as much as we could of furniture that they had from their previous home, which was much more traditional in style. But with some creative sourcing, we were able to achieve the vision that they had in mind,” says Stephens, 278 / luxe interiors + design
who notes that Christopher Thompson of Studio Lux had a hand in the design of the ambient and accent lighting. Throughout, the design is unified by its materials, such as the natural sapele wood used for the exterior siding, cabinetry and window frames, as well as a massive pivot door at the entry. Ceramic tile flooring in the kitchen matches the concrete on the outdoor terrace just beyond the glass, while end-grain Douglas fir in the master suite sets it apart as an oasis from the rest of the house: It’s at one end of the home, with a two-story children’s wing at the opposite end. Though the master suite provides Madzy and Ian moments of quiet respite, the family seems happiest with how welcoming their home is to friends and guests. “The basis for the design was bringing the outside in, and I love it when the doors are open and the kids are running around the backyard,” Madzy says. “It’s those kind of moments when we say we’re really glad we did this.” L
Just off the kitchen is a playroom and office area where the kids can do their homework while Madzy cooks nearby. The desk features a PentalQuartz top fabricated by Rockwood Stoneworks and a blackened-steel bulletin board by Boiler Room Custom Metalwork.
Coleman’s design transformed the original house’s circuitous interior into a more open plan, making it possible to look down the entire length of the house from the kitchen to the master bedroom.
The architecture and landscape are merged through lift-and-slide doors and large panes of glass, all from Quantum Windows & Doors. Using sapele wood for the siding, pillars and trim created a unified and restrained materials palette. The Jorve Corporation installed Western Red Cedar shakes on the roof, and Emil’s Concrete Construction Co. executed the acid-etched flatwork.

ear the Willamette River in the Portland neighborhood of St. Johns, tucked amid an old-growth forest, a shipping container lot and a neighbor’s aging Cadillac collection, sits a pocket of inspiration rich with history, industry and nature. It’s a scene that sets the tone for artisans Andi Kovel and Justin Parker, the creative forces behind Esque Studio, an atelier specializing in handblown-glass objects. “There’s a certain pleasure in handling thoughtfully made items that is indescribable,” says Kovel. “The interplay between craft and design has been at the core of Esque’s mission and intention from its inception. The two movements are inseparable for us.” Though linked by their vision and medium of choice, the designers’ processes differ dramatically. Kovel is a methodical designer, planning on paper before making the move to glass and drawn to saturated hues and pastels, while Parker, a great admirer of the age-old techniques of Italian glass masters, is more spontaneous and free-form, creating from the start with glass in hand and not as focused on color. “What excites me most is the future and the unknown,” Parker says. “What’s yet to be created, what’s next.”
Their differences come together beautifully in a new lighting line that will be available on Esque’s website. The collection will contain seven new designs, two in collaboration with Cedar & Moss, and includes some freshened understandings of existing pieces. The Waterdrop pendant, for example, is an interpretation of their iconic Waterdrop jug with an opening added at the bottom to easily switch out bulbs. The pair also just created new knobs and pulls for Anthropologie. Twenty years and a few thousand miles after meeting at a studio in Brooklyn, Kovel and Parker are still enraptured by their medium, rethinking design and gaining inspiration from everything around them, including the city of Portland itself. “Watching the development of the craft movement in Portland over the past 15 years has been exciting. The handmade spirit is thriving across different professions and neighborhoods,” says Kovel, who also holds dear a collection of her grandmother’s paintings that radiate creative influence. Their hamlet in the far reaches of Portland, where their dogs run in the woods and wrestle among race cars driven by their landlord, is proof that the creative, entrepreneurial spirit has spread its wings beyond the city limits. “The plan is to always innovate and inspire,” Kovel says. “And we’re making art disguised as design to foster that experience.” L

s they started their lives together, David and Jennifer Arbanas put down roots in Portland’s alluring Dunthorpe neighborhood, in a 1970s Tudor set on two sprawling acres with a long history behind them. Active and outgoing, David and Jennifer soon became friends with their neighbors; their kids all grew up together and could walk to school. Upon becoming retired empty nesters, though, the couple wanted to freshen their home to better suit their new phase of life. Wine enthusiasts who love to cook and entertain, they are also big fans of indoor-outdoor living, so it was of utmost importance for their house to embrace its surroundings. In fact, upon glancing into their yard, you might wonder if you’re still in Oregon. The lush grounds, complete with swaying palm trees, more likely evoke an island paradise. “Many people don’t realize that a lot of tropical-looking plants really thrive here,” says Rick Serazin, the couple’s landscape designer for years, who infused the gardens with musa basjoo, or hardy banana, along with windmill palms and flowering plants with brightly colored blooms. “Your personal gardens should be inspiring, and Jennifer and David were open to having this bold, not-at-all traditional garden.” Serazin also persuaded the couple to replace their tennis courts with a swimming pool, and he incorporated the existing 80-year-old stone walls and

walkways into his design. “The property was part of a larger estate that was laid out in the 1920s, so there are fragments of a historic setting, which I love,” he says. Without question, the spectacular grounds provided much of the inspiration for the home’s interior redesign. “We wanted to create a fresh, airy palette that allowed the lush greenery to glow through the windows—something elegant and sophisticated but not stuffy,” says designer Joelle C. Nesen, who worked on the project with senior designer Lucy A. Roland. The two suggested bringing the home’s bright, multihued spaces down to neutrals, infused with rich colors pulled from nature that are strong and contrasting yet still serene. “By reducing the amount of color in the house, your eye just flows through everything, right out to the scenery,” Nesen explains. Nesen and Roland collaborated with the couple’s longtime builders, brothers Brian Bohrer and Jeff Bohrer. They completely gutted the backside of the house— including the kitchen, living room, media room, dining room and office area—down to the studs. A chief goal was to create spaces that would work for how David and Jennifer truly live. Just as Serazin questioned whether they might get more use out of a pool than tennis courts, the design team pondered the livability of the interior spaces. “There was a small office, and it wasn’t functional,” Nesen says. “The couple really entertains, so we thought, ‘Let’s make this an amazing bar.’ ” The custom cabinetry is fully outfitted, including a dishwasher with a china setting to wash fine glassware, and the doorway to the bar area was expanded from 5 to 9 feet in width to encourage flow during parties and make it feel more integrated with the family room yet still be its own entity. “I love working with clients when they’ve lived in a house for a long time,” Brian Bohrer says. “You know how they’ve lived in that house, and when their lifestyle changes, you get to build around how they’re going to live in the next phase.” That was especially important in the kitchen, which was custom-designed for the owners in every way. Their big wish list of appliances—a large range, a wine cooler, a built-in espresso machine, a warming drawer and two dishwashers—had to fit into a relatively small footprint. “It took us a while to maneuver and manipulate so it wouldn’t look like a room crammed with appliances,” Nesen says of the ultimately bright, airy space. The builders conducted a major foundation repair to correct a sloped floor in the kitchen, and they laser-leveled and refloated the ceiling six times to ensure that it was perfectly flat and integrated with the cabinets. Every detail was agonized over by the design team, from cabinet layout to how the custom banquette integrates with the windowsill. “We asked ourselves, when you sit there, with your back to the windowsill, are you comfortable?” Brian Bohrer recalls. “We had to make sure that those elements would work.” luxe interiors + design / 291

The backyard evokes a tropical island getaway. From the pool, basalt steps lead to a pergola covered in Concord grape vines. The stairs are flanked by golden thread-branch cypress. Beds of Japanese forest grass and iresine are punctuated by hibiscus moscheutos and orange punch canna lilies.
In the main living spaces, French doors maximize views of the grounds, and original overscaled furniture was replaced with pieces that have cleaner lines but still offer comfort. Many of the new furnishings are custom, and although the palette is subdued, there are dashes of color and texture—in upholstery, in the couple’s art collection and in wallcoverings of grass cloth or ethnic prints that dovetail with the Bali-esque glamour of the outdoor spaces. “All of the color in the house was spicy and warm,” Nesen says. “We wanted to use cooler tones paired with richer darks for more drama.” The home is now an idyllic locale for either relaxing on a Sunday or hosting large affairs. The interiors have an elegant ease, and as guests flow out into the yard, the sensory delights only continue. “We added some large beds to the existing lawn to break up the space and make it a strolling garden, so people could grab a glass of wine, go for a walk and see different things that you wouldn’t be able to see from any one vantage point,” Serazin says. “And we used different aromatic plants, so especially in the summer, as you’re wandering in the garden, you’re delighted with fragrances from all directions.”
The bar features custom cabinetry painted by Balzer Painting with a high-gloss automotive-finish paint, and Classic Brass knobs and Colonial Bronze pulls from Chown Hardware. The faucet was custom-plated by Palm Springs Plating, and the light fixture is by Charles Loomis Lighting. The carpet is from Kush Handmade Rugs.

tepping inside Phloem Studio immediately dispels the notion of a quiet Pacific Northwest woodsman whittling away to folk music. Here, the soundtrack is loud and driving to keep pace with craftsman Benjamin Klebba, who is wielding a set of chisels like a Samurai. Indeed, Klebba, who first honed his woodworking skills by building acoustic guitars, has mastered the art of crafting fine furniture with his collection of seating, beds and case goods made from domestic hardwoods. “Wood is a natural resource that comes from trees that were once living, and I think it’s important to honor that,” he says. “I named my company Phloem Studio to keep that awareness close, as phloem is the term for the vascular tissue in plants through which nutrients flow via photosynthesis.” This blend of synergy and sentiment runs through Klebba’s entire line, whether it’s the Leo highboy, the Maxwell lounge or the Regina loveseat. His favorite design, the Shaker-esque Harbor chair, was realized with his father, Ron, a craftsman himself who early on inspired Klebba to create. Working with his dad and a small team of artisans, Klebba stays busy with a custom, labor-intensive process that begins with sketches and evolves into life-size prototypes. It’s here where he may fine-tune the angle and joinery or collaborate with textile artisans such as Leland Duck of Revive Upholstery & Design or Matt Pierce at Wood&Faulk for leather slings. “I love building furniture that will outlive the owner in a timeless fashion,” says Klebba, who will launch a new line at New York’s ICFF in May. “I want my pieces to have a voice, whether they reside in a contemporary glass house, a midcentury modern residence or a Craftsman bungalow.” As the day winds down, the music softens to 1950s jazz, yet the work almost never stops. “You have to go to the woodshed to perfect your craft,” Klebba says, much like the way great musicians dig deep into their art when woodshedding, relentlessly dedicated to practicing and bettering themselves. “If you are going to be good at what you do, you have to always be open to learning and understand that it takes time. No one is going to do this for you. It all stops and starts with yourself.” L

L
ongtime inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest learn to embrace lengthy stretches of fog, drizzle and rain. Though there are spectacular tradeoffs, such as the magnificent natural scenery and mild winters, the gray skies can take a toll. So when a young couple began thinking about expanding their 1920s brick home in the leafy Broadmoor neighborhood of Seattle, their mandate to the design team was light—and lots of it. “They said, ‘Make this house really light and bright,’ ” designer Doug Rasar recalls. “We did that not only with finishes, materials and lighting, but also with the architecture.” The site was impressive: a lushly planted 39,000-squarefoot lot that had grown to include a neighboring property. But when the original classical revival dwelling couldn’t be redesigned to suit the clients’ wish for traditional yet open spaces conducive to entertaining, architect Stephen Sullivan went back to the drawing board. Starting from scratch, he came up with an L-shaped plan that maximizes natural light and puts the focus on the landscape, which includes a 70-year-old blue atlas cedar tree. For Sullivan, Pacific Northwest architecture is all about light, but here he looked to Europe for precedents. “A similar kind of architecture exists in Amsterdam, where old brick buildings have huge windows relative to their mass,” notes Sullivan, who worked with project architect Jim Romano of Conard Romano Architects as the two were part of the same firm at the onset of the endeavor.
The plan took an interesting turn when the husband sent Sullivan an article about glass technology and asked if they could incorporate a more contemporary use of glass into the design. “It was a completely conflicting programmatic element,” says Sullivan, “but also an opportunity to embrace both neoclassical and modernist principles and derive a language that could hold them together in a coherent whole.” After Rasar suggested they take a trip to Southern California to look at examples of indoor-outdoor spaces marked by high ceilings, weathered wood floors and ample glazing, Sullivan pondered bringing the windows all the way up to the ceiling plane, so that the rooms could become, as he puts it, “reflectors of light.” The couple jumped at the idea. Concealing the headers of the French doors located on the main level, as well as the lift-and-slide panels, was no small task for builder Klaus Toth, who oversaw the construction with project manager Danica Holmlund and superintendent Rick Werden. “Everybody looks at the window design and sees it as quiet and beautiful,” remarks Toth. “Creating a seamless detail that appears very simple required a lot of consideration.” Another challenge was applying a slurry coat to the bricks on the structure’s main block, which softened its formality while layering on color and patina. “This is common in Southern states, but not here, and none of our stonework contractors had done it before,” says Toth;
Elsewhere in the entry, a Julie Speidel sculpture from Winston Wächter joins an oil by William Ivey from Woodside / Braseth Gallery. For the flooring, Rasar chose a trio of distressed stone tiles from Exquisite Surfaces in Los Angeles, installed by Architectural Stone Werkes. Beyond, a concrete-topped table from Baker sits below a light fixture from JF Chen in Los Angeles.

Comfortable seating is offered through a Patricia Edwards sofa and a blue Baker lounge chair. Circa Lighting table lamps from Harold’s Lighting and a coffee table from Rasar’s inventory join the scene.
he ultimately worked with a masonry supplier to come up with just the right mix for the Pacific Northwest climate. As with the exterior, rather than veering completely into either traditional or modern territory, the interiors nimbly bridge both, and Rasar came up with a fresh palette to reflect its youthful, active residents. To give the rooms the feeling of having been furnished over time, he and assistant designer Christopher Martinez-Luna combined existing family furnishings—like the antique French settee in the entrance hall and a tansu chest from Japan cleverly tucked beneath the powder room’s vanity—with custom pieces such as the contemporary dining table that expands to seat 16 against an aged teal wallcovering taken from an old showroom sample. Throughout, architectural detailing tends to the lean and spare. The family room features built-in shelving and a stone fireplace, but without the heavy molding found in a traditional Georgian design. The kitchen, meanwhile, balances lacquered-white cabinetry and a tempered-anddiffused-mirror backsplash with hand-planed, wide-plank oak floors. “When you do a new house, it’s easy to lose what was great about the old one,” he says. “But there is enough tradition in this house that one can wonder if it’s brand-new.” Pristine white walls became a backdrop for a growing collection of paintings by prominent Northwest artists such as Kenneth Callahan, Michael Dailey, Margaret Tomkins and William Ivey. In the tradition of old is new again, Rasar explains: “The art by Northwest masters that is represented in the house has a clean and refreshing vibe.” Before construction even began, landscape architect Randy Allworth reconceived and expanded on the design he had developed with the couple for their original home. With the property reconfigured, the main house, pool house and garage converge on a large lawn and gathering space, and tall plantings and hedges on the perimeter provide privacy while bringing distant mature trees into view. “It feels like a large country garden even though it’s in the city,” says Allworth, who worked with project manager Nanda Patel. The couple is delighted that they now have the kind of home where get-togethers can spill from the elegant rooms to the outdoors, where food trucks are set up for informal dining, and guests can linger around the fire pit or dance under lights on the terrace. It’s a house built on tradition without being fussy. “That describes the clients as well,” says Sullivan. “They’re formal, but they’re just as comfortable reading the newspaper in jeans on the living room sofa. This is a house where every single room gets used all the time.” 312 / luxe interiors + design
