Inspiration For over two decades, Hudson Valley Lighting has been driven by Founder and Owner David Littman’s vision to produce timeless, heirloom-quality collections through a wide range of styles from the 19th and 20th centuries. ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP
Hudson Valley Lighting is dedicated to artisan craftsmanship in creating masterful, high-quality designs with a focus on exceptional materials and careful attention to detail. The results speak for themselves—antique-quality lighting designs that look beautiful for generations to come.
UNIQUE AESTHETICS
When I see a piece of antique furniture, my imagination goes wild about its history and how the lines and details are still relevant today. Great design is something that spurs curiosity, imagination and emotion. — DAVID LITTMAN
Spanning in style from historic to artisan and transitional to contemporary, Hudson Valley Lighting uses high-grade materials such as solid cast brass, crystal, acrylic and blown glass. Superior manufacturing techniques, such as brass forging and hand-rubbed finishes, along with innovative technologies, allows one to appreciate the difference firsthand.
AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE
The quality and spectacular beauty of each Hudson Valley Lighting fixture can’t be found in more industrialized products. This unique experience, not typically seen in lighting design, provides its owners with a profound sense of pride and extreme appreciation for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Where Are You heAded? In the world of design, journeying—in some way, shape or form—is a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along. If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journey—whether it’s as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseas—further encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

THE INSIDERS
NEW+NOW GET TO KNOW FOUR SOCAL INFLUENCERS AS THEY SHED LIGHT ON WHAT’S OF THE MOMENT IN DESIGN, ART AND ARCHITECTURE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
Having a moment: It has to be Apple. As I see it, they are California’s ambassadors of creative thinking with products that have awesome multidimensionality slowly catching up to the unlimited capabilities of the human mind. Up next: I am launching a new project through Natural Curiosities in the fall called The Nature Creative. I’ll be inviting artists, designers, celebrities and creative thinkers into my design studio to craft products that are all about celebrating nature. Then, they’ll be sold through our distribution channels with a percentage of sales going to charities that support the environment. What keeps you curious about design? Design is a language used for artistic thinkers to express themselves visually without necessarily the use of words. It is pure creative expression, and for me, it’s the only place to be. Favorite item in inventory: I have been working with hand-painted golden feathers for many years now, and I just can’t seem to let them go. They represent flight, which appeals to the freewheeling side of me. Los Angeles’ most beautiful building: The Griffith Observatory—or, as we like to call it, the Cali White House—boasts the city’s most impressive architecture, hands down. For the design-obsessed: Be sure to check out the Jensen Recreation Center, which houses my studio, and then take a walk through the streets of Echo Park. There are so many incredible things to see here. I’m also constantly encouraging all of my friends to visit The Museum of Jurassic Technology; it’s a strange but interesting little place. Best place to get lost: Elysian Park is one of my favorite spots in the city. It has the most number of 102 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN
Christopher Wilcox is the founder and the creative force behind Los Angeles lifestyle brand Natural Curiosities. He owns a prolific collection of butterfly wings and hopes to one day design the ultimate nature-inspired boutique hotel.
2 THE ARCHITECT RON RADZINER
Happening in L.A.: I’m really excited about phase two of the Expo Line, which will extend our new light rail service from Culver City to Santa Monica, meaning we’ll be able to travel from downtown to the beach in under an hour at any time of day.
2
For the design-obsessed: Checking out Rudolph Schindler’s Kings Road House, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House and the Bradbury Building are all essentials to cross off any design lover’s bucket list. Materials of the moment: Recently, we’ve been enjoying using a zinc paneling material called Anthra-Zinc, which patinas beautifully over time. While we’ve also worked with lots of metals like stainless steel and titanium, I’ve not yet used Cor-Ten steel, and I’m very much looking forward to it. Keep an eye on: Landscape architect Jay Griffith has a great eye for rhythm in the landscape and for using California-native plants and Mediterranean succulents in compelling ways. He surprises me every time. Luxury is… In Los Angeles, and for myself, luxury means having an outdoor space that’s part of your home, whether it’s a little courtyard off a bungalow or an expansive yard.
Images: From top: Some of Natural Curiosities’ latest offerings as demonstrated in the company’s Walls of Wonder series and a piece from its Queen Victoria Feathers collection. Scenes from Ron Radziner’s design work at the recently opened Oliver Peoples boutique in San Francisco and a residential project in Montecito.
What’s trending? Sustainability. We consistently employ passive and active solar design and water efficiency strategies into our work and always will. We carefully consider the orientation, layout and location of our homes on the site, use energy-efficient windows and glazing systems, and implement low-flow plumbing fixtures and rainwater catchment processes to conserve water. One half of the founding team behind acclaimed Los Angeles architecture firm Marmol Radziner, Ron Radziner’s biggest influence is the work of the original California modernists. His design pet peeve is vessel sinks.

4 THE PHOTOGRAPHER DAVID TSAY
Favorite shopping destination: My husband and I have lived in Highland Park for about 20 years, and we have seen big changes in the area, especially in the last couple of years. I’m excited to see this neighborhood flourish and find its own voice and unique design identity.
Can’t get enough: Loro Piana makes beautiful clothing with exceptional quality and discerning detail, and I adore their Panama hats. I also love the designs of the great Milan-based designer and architect Piero Lissoni. Great way to beat the summer heat: It’s so easy to spend an afternoon at the historic Lotusland estate in Montecito; I particularly enjoy sketching the incredible gardens during my visits.

3 THE OUTDOOR GURU JANICE FELDMAN
One to watch: George M. Beylerian, the well-known design impresario, just launched his De Gustibus line in Milan this year. It is an assembled collection of objects created by some of the best Italian design talents of the past 50 years. The personalities and styles of the artists, designers and architects commissioned for this project are easily reflected in the exclusive pieces. 104 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN
On your radar: I am looking forward to the opening of the South Beach hotel in Singapore. It is a part of an amazing residential, hospitality, commercial complex designed by Philippe Starck, and we are proud to be outfitting some of the hotel’s spaces. For the design-obsessed: The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is a stunning juxtaposition of historic 1930s architecture—it was originally the Beverly Hills post office—and the design language of today. Coming up: This year, we are launching several new collections, including The Masters Aluminum Series in collaboration with interior designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. I’ve long admired his talent, and I am so honored to be working with him. Janice Feldman is the president and CEO of outdoor furnishings mega-brand Janus et Cie. The California native has recently packed up her ambitious number of hats and scarves and is making a home for herself in Singapore.
Best place to get lost: Point Dume State Beach. I like to drive right up to the sand at the end of the driveway to watch the long summer sunsets. Most people go there for rock climbing, so the beach itself is always pretty empty. Go-to spot: I love that the Norton Simon Museum is always kind of operating under the radar. It has some of the most amazing art collections, and it’s so quiet in there. I like to stand in front of the old masters and be in total awe at how they literally painted light. I eyeball each highlight and shadow through the brushstrokes sometimes so closely the docent will ask me to back off. Dream collaboration: Kelly Wearstler’s work is constantly evolving and growing. Her spaces are so textured and layered and almost chaotic that I think it’d be a fun challenge to “explain” them through a two-dimensional, photographic space. Up next: I just wrapped a long shoot for designer and blogger Emily Henderson’s upcoming coffee table book about styling. It’s coming out this fall, and it’s going to be beautiful. We got to shoot at some really gorgeous homes. David Tsay is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose portfolio includes shoots for the nation’s top magazines and lifestyle brands. He credits his mentor Clive Piercy for his love of apartment building sign typography.
Images: From top: David Tsay worked with Air Conditioned’s Clive Piercy to develop the highly graphic look of his printed photography portfolio, which is titled “David Tsay in Black and White.” The Tiempo sectional, Capella dining table and Quadratl side chairs are all integral parts of Janus et Cie’s compulsively shoppable outdoor living collection.
JANICE FELDMAN HEADSHOT AND PHOTOS: COURTESY JANUS ET CIE. DAVID TSAY HEADSHOT AND PHOTOS: COURTESY DAVID TSAY.
Shop ’til you drop: West Hollywood has a vibrant collection of showrooms and design boutiques, which always show the latest fashion and home concepts, but I love browsing the retail shops in the Upper Village of Montecito and Coast Village Road.
For the design-obsessed: There are probably more interesting and adventurous flea market excursions in rural parts of the country, but the Rose Bowl Flea Market is just so much fun—especially very early before the sun comes up. It’s amazing to watch all the industry people and store buyers shopping intensely with walkie talkies and buying up all the crazy good stuff before the general crowd wakes up.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duo’s success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold. Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scene—paintbrush in hand—captivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. “Her textiles are so chic and livable,” says Reynolds. “Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.” Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyn’s Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. “We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age,” says Waggoner of the partnership. “Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.” Studio Four’s next debut proves that the art of plaster isn’t lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian
plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. “We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls,” says Waggoner, “and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.” With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Four’s Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. “Design is a luxury,” says Reynolds. “It should always inspire and never intimidate.”

A HISTORICAL HAVEN IN A SEAPORT CITY, AN ACCLAIMED ATHLETIC CLUB AND A 1930S BEACHSIDE REFUGE ARE ALL GIVEN NEW LIFE BY SOME OF THE BEST NAMES IN DESIGN. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MIMI FAUCETT
An infamous, members-only social club that once entertained the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor is being boldly reimagined by acclaimed architect Richard Meier. Located in the South Florida town of Surfside, the Surf Club will be a visual dialogue between the old and the new, transforming the original 1930s club into a Four Seasons boutique hotel and residences. Meier’s material palette will be simple: Floor-to-ceiling glass will maximize horizontal views of the Atlantic Ocean, while local surfaces, namely flooring of porous coral stone, will detail the exterior. Inside, handpicked furnishings will be set amidst the clean backdrop of the architect’s signature color—white. thesurfclub.com
CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHICAGO Founded in 1890 by families of American sports royalty (think Wrigley and Spalding), the Chicago Athletic Association has been a fixture in the Windy City for more than a century. The famed location, originally designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb, has now been revamped into a luxury lifestyle hotel by design duo Roman and Williams. “We were devoted to preserving the character and details of this historic building while creating a new language,” say the designers. The aesthetic maintains the building’s original fireplaces with bas-relief wood carvings, expansive marble staircases and stained glass, yet speaks to classic Americana with vintage artifacts like wooden gym ladders, Victorian-inspired lighting and leather furnishings. chicagoathletichotel.com
THE PALLADIAN HOTEL SEATTLE The Palladian Hotel, established in Seattle in 1910, was named for the Palladian windows that defined the architecture of the time. Today, San Francisco-based designer Nicole Hollis has taken this historically significant building and given it a speakeasy vibe with a sense of humor (pillows printed with Tom Selleck’s portrait, for example). Reclaimed-wood headboards juxtapose crisp, white Frette linens in the guest rooms, while brass accents, velvet upholstery and a tufted-leather check-in characterize the lobby, with the hotel’s original doors standing at the entrance of the gym. Ornamented by custom Ladies & Gentlemen light fixtures, Hollis’ warm yet playful interiors program boasts a quintessential Seattle feel and reflects the pulsating street culture found just outside. palladianhotel.com

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS
“I want my pieces to feel like something you would hand down to the next generation,” explains designer Windsor Smith in reference to her new 40-piece collection for Arteriors. Brimming with furnishings, lighting and home accents in a range of tonal golds, mixed metals and varied marbles, the line flirts between masculine and feminine dichotomies. Case in point: Smith’s Athena sconce (shown here in silver) was inspired by the delicate drop of an earring, while the Atlas sconce (shown in gold)
reveals the same caged form but in a more industrial, geometric outline. “It is through shape and silhouette,” says Smith, “that instant sculpture is evoked.” Laced with neoclassical and GrecoRoman influences, the collection leaves a rich patina in its wake, beckoning centuries past while maintaining modern relevance. “My goal was to reinterpret traditional in a beautiful, lasting way with utilitarian pieces that are meant to be used and not thought of as too precious,” Smith explains. Mission accomplished.

GrAy MALIN TeLLS A TALe Of WhIMSy ThrOuGh SurreAL IMAGery Of ANIMALS rOAMING The PArker PALM SPrINGS. WrITTeN ANd PrOduced By jesse brAtter
Photographer Gray Malin journeys to far and away places, capturing eccentric moments that spark fantasy and wonder, like llamas adorned in balloons amidst Bolivia’s salt flats, or rainbow-hued sheep in Australia. In his new fine art series, Gray Malin at the Parker, he keeps his zest for adventure close to home, shooting at the Parker Palm Springs as exotic animals playfully explore the iconic resort that unites luxury with amusement. Malin put down his camera to discuss the enchanting series, where monkeys are bellhops and giraffes are the guests, temporarily on view at the hotel. With an infectious joie de vivre, he proves the old adage: not all who wander are lost.
How did animals become your muse? I have a deep love for flamingos and penguins and couldn’t stop envisioning them on the property. Working with them and the capuchin monkey, zebra and baby giraffe was so much fun—I wish I could live in this fantasy every day. Any divas on set? We had trainers to direct the crew and myself on how to interact with them to keep them as happy models. Zack the zebra wasn’t much of a fan of the balloons, as they kept popping, but he was a professional and we got the shot. Images of animals in dreamlike settings are one part of your repertoire, but you’re also known for aerial shots of beach scenes. How do you capture the perfect composition? When I’m in the air, people and objects begin to stand out and
form patterns below. Once I’m up there, everything magically comes together visually for me and I’m able to capture the natural art that is being created below in the distance. What’s the most daring stunt you’ve done to get the perfect shot? Standing on a 10-foot inflatable boat in the waters of Antarctica, shooting beach balls up against icebergs the size of a skyscraper that could break apart at any moment. It was the thrill of a lifetime. You’ve said your favorite part of your job is getting to see the world. Can you offer a piece of travel advice to those filled with the same wanderlust? If you’re ever in Bhutan, you must visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country’s most sacred religious sites. Built in the 8th century on the side of a cliff, it is something of another world.

Your new fine art series focuses on exotic animals in unexpected places. What inspired the collection? Since living in Los Angeles, I’ve always enjoyed the quick escape to the desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been my longtime favorite hotel there. This was a chance to let my imagination run wild, and apparently it ran right into a menagerie of wild animals enjoying the hotel with me.

“It’s fantastic to drift and just let a place wash over you,” designer Tracey Boyd says of her approach to travel. Until recently, her chances to do just that were rare. As the creative director of the coveted fashion label Boyd, she was constantly in motion, creating edgy yet feminine clothing. Her singular vision—one collection featured fleece ball gowns—won her a New Generation Designer of the Year honor at the 2000 Rover British Fashion Awards, along with a devoted international following, but little time for anything else. “When I moved into a more organic way of designing, I decided to go on trips for two or three months,” she says. “I wanted to go deeper.” This change of focus yielded Aboydbazaar, a collection of clothing and accessories influenced by her biggest passions: life, travel, art and fashion.
Since then, Boyd has been busy soaking up the world’s sights and sounds, be it the modern shapes of Singapore’s skyline or the traditional beading practices in Penang. India remains a favorite destination and a constant source of inspiration. “It’s such a place of contrast,” says Boyd. “When I’m there, I have too many ideas. I have to file them away and then come home to make sense of them.” With the luxury of time, the designer can now absorb the lessons from her travels and incorporate them into her work, such as in her latest venture, Boyd, a line of furniture inspired by her journeys and currently available through Anthropologie. “I’m obsessed with finding out how things are done but looking at them in a contemporary way,” she says. “Then, I put my own spin on them.”
Next on Boyd’s itinerary? She’s heading to the U.S., where she’ll launch Boyd with Resource Decor at High Point Market in October. Imbued with color and texture, the line mixes modern and traditional shapes in materials ranging from lacquer and metal to concrete and shells. Before that, however, she’ll pack a bag with a sketch pad, a few of her Aboydbazaar shirts, a collection of black and white beads and a beloved Dries Van Noten scarf and head to Puglia, in Southern Italy, to a convent that was reinvented as a hotel. “It’s filled with tribal art, textiles and miles of books on art, sculpture and furniture. It’s like having a holiday in the most fabulous library with incredible food and beautiful gardens,” says Boyd. “It’s a mixture of work and play and sums up my ideal way to travel.”

BLUEPRINT TONGVA PARK & KEN GENSER SQUARE Inspired by Southern California’s arroyo landscape, the team at James Corner Field Operations crafted a plan for Tongva Park and Ken Genser Square that weaves a slip of nature through Santa Monica. “We’ve sculpted a dramatic topography of hills and hollows, and incorporated a large number of native plant species to create a spectacular horticultural garden,” says landscape architect Corner, known for his work on New York’s High Line. With energy-friendly features restoring the site’s original ecosystem, the textually rich palette of native grasses and drought-hearty succulents merges with intimate garden alcoves, play areas and a dramatic metal observatory overlooking ocean views. “We wanted to create a new destination and gathering place of great social, ecological and symbolic value.” smciviccenterparks.com; fieldoperations.net

WHAT: Follow Harris and his buds abouttown—whether he’s hunting for inspiration from contemporary art exhibits and exotic locales, or tweaking his own elaborate set designs at L.A.’s most exclusive functions. WHY: No one brings a sense of whimsy to lavish settings like Harris. The bright and beautiful stems of ranunculus, amaryllis and dubium he incorporates in his designs more than earn the fun, diva-ready monikers Harris gives to each of his arrangements. “We’ve been working with Thomas Lavin for years and consider ourselves lucky to have him in our own backyard here at the Laguna Design Center. He has impeccable taste and is always finding something new, whether it’s textile designs, fine art or gorgeous furniture.”
“The Pat McGann Gallery is one of my favorite stops along La Cienega Boulevard. Pat just has exquisite taste, and I’ve always admired how she mixes midcentury pieces with more ornate Asian antiques. Plus, her collection of textiles is not to be missed.”
“I’ve worked with Ellen LeComte at Amsterdam Modern since I started out in 2011. I actually wasn’t a huge fan of Danish modern furniture until I moved to Los Angeles—where the style is just everywhere—but she’s really helped guide me toward pieces that work with my aesthetic.”

“There are so many exhibitions to see these days, and the more you see the more your palette becomes both stretched and refined. So, I am interested in exhibitions that push me to really investigate what I am viewing—ones that invoke an inner dialogue, that have viewers wresting with what the artist has generated. For our own exhibits, I tend to find inspiration from just visiting with our artists in their studios. It’s a chance to have quiet moments with the work and engage in that same dialogue that tends to be very rich and rewarding. We treat our artists and collectors as a part of our gallery family.” -BEN STRAUSS-MALCOLM, QUINTGALLERY.COM

Describe your aesthetic. I love the Japanese concept of wabisabi—how the understated and flawed make people connect to the piece in a deeply personal way. Aesthetically, I gravitate toward a more minimal representation of this, playing with symbolism and form.
What does it mean to be an artist in Los Angeles? L.A. is amazing right now. New artists and galleries are opening up every day. Plus, the gritty landscape of Los Angeles mixed with the natural beauty of the mountains and ocean is the perfect inspiration for creative minds.
What are your main materials? I tend to work with metal, glass, wood and ceramic. Each material brings its own history to the piece, but I love creating with glass and clay the most. Their alchemical, transformative nature is transfi xing to operate with.
Favorite local gallery? I love the Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery on La Brea Avenue. The space is an absolute jewel box designed by artist James Turrell, and they’ve shown some of my favorite artists there, such as Michel Auder and Jim Lambie.

MAISON MIDI
When did you open? We’ve been in our location on La Brea Avenue since 1988. What was your inspiration for the store? I’ve lived in France, Spain and Morocco for years, so Maison Midi comes from a deep passion for the Mediterranean way of life—a region that has had an enormous influence on California style since the 1920s. How do you select your products? In general, we look for anything with a strong Mediterranean vibe: fine linens from Oporto, Portugal, or handblown glassware from the tiny island of Murano, just outside Venice, Italy. We’ve also been a distributor of handmade Carocim tiles from Morocco for over 20 years. What makes Maison Midi unique? My business partner, Susan Starr, and I spend literally a fortune annually on travel, seeking out interesting and original items all over the world. So, we feel we can confidently offer pieces rarely found elsewhere. maison-midi.com
9 a.m. Start the day at Shed for breakfast—its architecture by Jensen Architects is beautiful, and it carries wonderful items for the house and garden. It also serves a custom blend made by my favorite local coffee house, Flying Goat Coffee.
10 a.m. After breakfast, check out the Harry and Maggie Wetzel Native Plant Garden. It’s a tiny hideaway reclaimed from an old parking lot with more than 80 species of native plants each grouped by habitat. 10:30 a.m. Hit the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market. Most of the produce is grown within 10 miles of the market, so it’s a great place to get the freshest Dry Creek peaches. I also always get my veggie starters here. 11:30 a.m. Take an art walk along Grove Street on the Foss Creek Pathway on your way to the main square in Healdsburg. It’s sponsored by the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation, and it’s beyond lovely.
12 p.m. Next, visit the Plaza. It’s our main square, and it has some wonderful art and design destinations, including my favorite: Saint Dizier Home. The store features local, handmade metal furniture—from tables of all shapes and sizes to beds, stools and shelving. Artist Aletha Soulé also displays her amazing wine country-inspired ceramics here. 1 p.m. Stop for lunch at Barndiva. It’s one of my favorite spots in Healdsburg and highlights the best ingredients from Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The chef, Ryan Fancher, has worked with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Yountville and Per Se in New York. All of the food is superb; plus, my fabric—Prima Alpaca—is used on an upholstered wall here, which provides a showcase for their rotating selection of artwork. 2 p.m. A visit to wine country would not be complete without a wine tasting. I love Copain Wines, which has a gorgeous view and interesting nontraditional wine varieties, and J Vineyards & Winery does great wine and food pairings. 4 p.m. Head to the Farmhouse Inn for a spa treatment. The spa is located in the inn’s former carriage house and incorporates ingredients from the surrounding land, such as Spring Forest honey, heirloom cider apples and fresh herbs, into their services. 7 p.m. Leave your dinner plans in the hands of Michelin-starred chef Steve Litke. His menu is inspired by the diversity of California cuisine, featuring Mexican and Italian influences.

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth—they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original. Eggersmann

If there is anything to take away from an exploration into Baldwin Hardware’s products, it is the following: Quality reigns supreme—always has and always will; continuity of design accents (i.e., hardware) is important; and hardware should be a direct reflection of the homeowner’s aesthetic and lifestyle. A legendary name in cabinet and door hardware, accessories and locks, Baldwin is a staple in the industry, with a strong track record in creating enduring products. “From our American roots to other parts of the world, we like to look at what is classic and on trend and make sure our hardware reflects the desires and aesthetics of the homeowner and design community,” says Baldwin brand manager PJ Rosch.

Yes, you want your hardware to be a reflection of your style and that means your style throughout the home must include the same high quality and finishes.

On Trend Synergy: While contemporary is a predominant design style, fusing looks is gaining popularity, such as modern interior designs in retro styles; black and white in geometric patterns; and organic materials in a space with pops of color. Variant hues: All shades of red are in, as are many shades of green. A resurgence of yellow brass is also noteworthy. A new kind of door: Pocket doors are huge on the list, from small spaces in New York to more industrial or rustic spaces. The best of brass: Traditional polished brass works well for the classicists, whereas a more transitional setting might call for a satin brass. A note on brass: Like everything in fashion, the popularity of brass ebbs and flows; however, it is less a trend and more a classic mainstay.
Historic and modern architecture. There is so much out there to love.
what are some tIps for the prospectIve hardware consumer? Think about the hardware early. Many people leave it until the end, but it is an integral part of the design and it should not be an afterthought.

What kitchen and bath trends should We anticipate for 2015? In terms of colors, gray will continue its reign in popularity, but other classic neutrals will join the palette for the year. Clean and contemporary lines will also dominate the kitchen and bath space.
The use of stone and tile in the home dates to antiquity and has survived millennia for a good reason: unwavering functionality. The use and look of these materials has gradually evolved, but did not undergo a noteworthy transformation until the 21st century. Companies like Cosentino, the global parent company of leading market brands for kitchen and bathroom quartz surfaces, have been prime movers in new applications and aesthetics of stone. “Cosentino’s research and development program has long been valued in architecture and design communities because of what its innovative manufacturing processes make possible,” says Lorenzo Marquez, Cosentino’s vice president of marketing. “Through a proprietary technique called Particle Sintering Technology, Cosentino has created an accelerated version of the process rocks and stones undergo over thousands of years in nature. The result: a stable material suited for an array of installations in the kitchen and bath, as well as outdoor kitchens and living spaces.” Versatility, a distinguishing characteristic of Cosentino-derived products, gives way to design cohesion and is the trait that will come to define this era’s stone and tile.
hoW have things changed in your industry in the past five years? Most notable is the demand for largeformat kitchen islands that serve as the home’s central hub, rather than the traditional kitchen table. In the bathroom, stand-alone showers have gained traction in place of the conventional shower and tub enclosures.
advice for someone beginning a project involving stone or tile: When it comes to material selection, durability and ease of care are just as important as how it complements the aesthetic of the space. This is often an installation job best left to professionals.

The kitchen, once an exclusively utilitarian space, has evolved into an aesthetic, central core of the home. Beyond open floor plans and heightened designs, kitchens are now becoming technologically rich, connecting end users to the infinite possibilities of the web. dacor, a leading designer and manufacturer of kitchen appliances, has been a driving force in the progression of the smart kitchen. The family-owned, california-based company is behind such kitchen innovations as the discovery iQ dual-Fuel Range, offering users cooking tutorials, recipes and text message notifications when food is ready; the discovery iQ Wall oven, featuring a built-in Android™ tablet and Bluetooth® technology and voice command; and the discovery Winestation, a four-bottle dispenser that preserves wine up to 60 days. dacor’s cEo charles Huebner notes the importance of connectivity in the kitchen but advises against technology for “technology’s sake.” “consumers will soon be bombarded with all things connected and should be aware of what they are buying for their home and why,” he asserts. “With dacor’s appliances, technology simplifies the cooking process and makes the culinary experience accessible to everyone, empowering the individual.”

Even though we are known the world over for our advanced cooking technologies, we still see ourselves as a small shop that builds beautiful, handcrafted appliances.
We are still seeing the same basic kitchen suite as in the past: range, hood, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator. As technology moves forward and people gain a greater appreciation for food preparation, they are becoming aware of proper food storage to extend the life of their purchases as well as conscientious waste disposal.
The exclusion of all things extraneous best describes today’s kitchen. A kitchen without boundaries or barriers, a kitchen free from conventional thought and restrictions, a kitchen created to reflect the individual.

tangIBle IntellIgence: “Every kitchen requires functional storage space that not only is accessible, but is clever in function,” soltoff says. “Examples include specialized pantry systems, specialty fitting dishwashers, inserts and utensil dividers.”
uBIquItous materIals, reBorn: In 2015, Eggersmann’s work will reveal innovative uses of organic materials, such as concretes and raw wood, as well as industrial finishes, such as stainless steel, copper, bronze and aluminum.
contInuIty control: “It is important to have a specific style carried throughout the space,” soltoff asserts. “Many kitchens are a part of and centered around the living space of the home. This doesn’t mean that the kitchen must match the style of furniture, interior trim and construction. often, our kitchens are shown as a juxtaposition or unexpected center of the home.” 1
Equal parts form and function, eggersmann’s cabinetry delivers beautiful and useful organizational solutions to the modern home dweller. The company, drawing from more than 100 years of innovation, trial and achievement, is a driving force behind the concealed kitchen—a design movement that gives way to gallery-like spaces in the kitchen, and the cabinetry is art. Using earthborn, organic materials such as raw wood and concrete, Eggersmann’s ultra sleek and clean-lined cabinetry reimagines modernity in a warm and inviting fashion. “We start with the most intrinsically raw materials available, including woods, metals and glass,” shares Eggersmann UsA cEo Michael soltoff. “With these materials used in various textures, colors and sheens, we constantly push the limits of the basic core components.” The Eggersmann design foundation is built on key Bauhaus architectural characteristics—flat, smooth surfaces, cubic shapes, neutral colors and open floor plans (fundamentally pure and resounding in utility)—and is distinguished by technological feats in cabinetry composition and ergonomics, such as its electric mechanisms, custom storage, handle integration and exotic veneers. “The wide availability of parts, components, hardware and materials across the world has caused a demand and push for incredible leaps and bounds in innovation of product,” soltoff says. “As electronic technology becomes more compact and lightweight, we see an increase in automation in our products, and it has become more of an integrated component of lifestyle, rather than just a cabinet or case good.”
“
Ergonomics play a large role in the design of a high-end kitchen, and it is highly suggested that most cabinetry pull out or come toward you instead of looking out of reach.

The trend of people spending more money on bathroom and kitchen remodeling— top requirements of new home buyers—continues to increase because these two rooms have become more important for boosting resale values.
”
Like jewelry, hardware is a powerful accent that can elevate, contemporize or even transform aesthetic quality. Equally remarkable is the utility of kitchen and bathroom fixtures and decorative hardware—an element of residential design that was once left to the discretion of professionals. Today, plumbing fixtures, accessories and hardware selection are as much a priority of the homeowner as cabinetry, a by-product of the increase in kitchen and bathroom remodels and the ubiquity of design ideas and information. In general, people are spending more on fixtures and hardware and placing greater value on the quality, craftsmanship and technological capabilities of these new products. california hardware manufacturer newport Brass, a premium brand of solid brass faucets and fixtures, is a noteworthy name in the industry and has adorned many of today’s residences with its contemporary, elegant and cutting-edge products. “We are dedicated to being at the forefront of the industry by incorporating technology, innovation and craftsmanship—all with a focus on creating products that bring value to our clients’ lifestyles, wellness and comforts,” shares david Emmons, director of marketing for Newport Brass. “We were one of the first manufacturers to implement Pvd (physical vapor deposition) finishing technology, a highly specialized process mastered by few manufacturers in the industry. Newport Brass now offers 29 finish options and multiple styles that can fit in any luxury bathroom or kitchen décor.”

consider two main factors when making a decision: 1. Is the style of the faucets or fixtures going to complement the room and offer a complete line of matching components? 2. Are the fixtures and components going to provide the functionality and performance the client is requiring, offering a personalized bathroom or kitchen design?
Quality and durability should never be overlooked, and layout and product selection with proper placement should serve a purpose. A well-designed space feels natural, looks in place and offers uncompromising enjoyment.

Poggenpohl began life in 1892 in a small german showroom. From the beginning, the ambition was to improve the kitchen. good fortune came to founder Friedemir Poggenpohl in finding craftspeople and designers to execute and expound upon his sleek, utilitarian aesthetic. Today, Poggenpohl is an industry innovator, from sustainable building methodology to fresh concepts in materials and finishes to ergonomic cabinetry. What Poggenpohl created more than a century ago is the kitchen of today: devoid of the superfluous, aesthetically modern and unabashedly centered on functionality. To further educate about the very latest in kitchen design, Poggenpohl luminaries I-ching Ueng, san Francisco showroom manager and designer, and Luiza Bajkowska, New York city Poggenpohl designer, shared a few of the most alluring new looks in the kitchen. “White gloss finishes seem to be dominating; clients want clean lines and the least amount of busyness—the opposite of the outside world, where they are being overloaded with information and clutter,” Bajkowska says. In addition to high-gloss and matte finishes, as well as handless design (a technology that speaks to the clean-lined Poggenpohl aesthetic), Ueng notes a general paradigm shift in the kitchen. “More and more people in the United states are following what has been true in Europe for many years, which is that kitchens are viewed as products, not just building materials,” she says. Ueng makes an interesting point, which might be taken a touch further: kitchens are viewed as art, not just products.

Durability is a must—melamine took over the lacquers.

The big picture: Modern style with clean design Sources of inspiration: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, sustainability, advancing technology Well-designed kitchen: Intuitive workflow, no confusion Well-designed cabinetry: Functional! On the radar: Retro design woven into pure and modern spaces Continuity vs. eclecticism: cohesion. Either monochromatic or a thoughtful combination of colors and materials that integrate with the rest of the décor of the house Uniquely Poggenpohl: german precision and innovation with flexibility that aspires to individual needs 2

decoration: consumers are looking for creative patterns and colorways for floors and walls. Moroccan and Southern Italian motifs offer amazing geometric and figurative patterns that can be used in many ways, even in modern interiors. Organic shapes in stone are trending, as are gray and blue in both ceramic and stone. Porcelain tile technology that mimics other materials, like wood, stone or concrete, is a major trend being embraced for residential and commercial work.

The temperature just spiked courtesy summer’s latest interior accents and fashion accessories that appear to be heavily influenced by four distinct cities. Here, the Southwestern feel of Santa Fe creates an instant heat wave by way of Ralph Lauren’s printed throw alongside Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ reinvigorated Kazan chair. In a city known for its great respect of art and culture, Santa Fe continues to inspire; case in point is the renowned Santa Fe Indian Market (detail shown below) that draws an array of folk artists and enthusiasts from around the globe. Even one of fashion’s elite, Veronica Etro, turned to the desert for her latest RTW line, as traditional Navaho prints, daring fringed heels and bohemian embellishments strutted down the runway. These free-spirited pieces are no mirage, but rather the perfect tangibles for imbuing a little adobe-chic into any home.

The Côte d’Azur has lured individuals of the art and design worlds for centuries, and it would appear that its most recent persuasions over fashion and interiors have us once again longing for a deep breath of that fresh coastline air. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg looked to the French Riviera for inspiration when creating her painterly Spring/Summer 2015 RTW collection, giving nods to Matisse and Picasso, frequenters of this seaside escape, through fun floral patterns displayed on wispy silks, while San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins evoked a touch of coastal style when fashioning this impressive haphazard-tiled wall, exuding ancient references brought into modern day with a striking sideboard reminiscent of a coral reef. At this rate, we’re ready to grab our passports and say bonjour to laidback living at its best.

HAUTE COUTURE

Always the trailblazer—whether it be in fashion, food or design—Milan has long been setting the tone for the rest of the world. And, when it comes to style and décor, it’s not just about the art of the mix, but more importantly, the element of surprise. Here, designer Barry Dixon’s seemingly turn-of-the-century Synapse pendant complements both the sleek, modern lines of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ottoman and the delicate form of Nina Tolstrup's Tall chair. Milan is by nature an effortlessly sartorial city, yet it’s not a reputation easily received without great thought and consideration. British fashion duo Peter Pilotto exercises the city’s fearlessness in their latest runway collection, where silhouette and pattern are brazenly exhibited through unorthodox materials like Perspex.

STRAIGHT FORWARD
Many mistake the fact that simplistic design requires less effort, but quite to the contrary; it’s the simple silhouettes and uncomplicated structures that change the way design is perceived and experienced. It is this philosophy that dominates the persona of our next influential city: Copenhagen. Blonde wood, open shapes and brushed-gold finishes are constant qualities synonymous with Denmark’s capital. Barber & Osgerby illustrate the art of this finesse in the Hula stool, which by appearances is seemingly straightforward, but upon further investigation, offers itself as either fixed seating or a rocking stool. But perhaps the father of modern Danish design, Finn Juhl, whose colorful sideboard is shown, sums up quintessential Copenhagen style best of all with his clean-lined furnishings. “One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects,” he says, “but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.”

Feel: The Air sofa is a modern shape that will feel more classic as time passes. It seems like a piece that would inspire our personal aesthetic to grow and change. Color: The strength of the color is that it’s a bold shade that acts as a neutral. The mossy green recalls nature and feels fresh. Statement: This silhouette demands attention and would inform the design of the rest of the room. It sets a tone of sophistication and class—you can’t go wrong with those brass legs! Sense: This piece would smell of old maps, leather and cigars, yet with a hint of perfume.

Collaboration: Partnerships like this bring together old and new creative talents, often resulting in beautiful and unexpected design. Collection: The pieces feel like a blend of both antiquity and modern taste. Each pattern is rich and intricate, but together they remain cohesive. Palette: Gray is the new white. The soft palette whispers of the beauty found in the handmade and nuanced details that feel very aligned with Fortuny’s heritage. Story: This collection reminds me of ancient vessels found at archeological digs in Egypt and then revived with an artisanal sensibility that fits into today’s world.

Brilliance: The resin top of this bench is quite kaleidoscopic. For me, it’s all about color and pattern: A vibrant mix of shapes and materials can make something quite classic in style feel fresh and modern. fun: Playfulness is very important. I like design with a good heart and a strong personality. Mood: This bench attracts attention. It feels Jurassic—the top looks as if it’s made from ancient, vibrant fossils. It would make for a great psychedelic addition to an entryway.

Designer: I am taken with how playful and fearless Christopher’s work is; he’s an artist with a sense of humor. His collection, for me, recalls the Space Age. Contrast: The contrast of black and white is striking. These tables are modern art sculptures and conversation starters. Color can complicate the design process and take away from the bold minimalism of a silhouette. These tables, especially the painted piece, still feel simple though the pattern is random and wild. Vision: The tables are seemingly optical illusions: If you look at them long enough, you might see something unexpected.

artistry: Robert Long’s pieces redefine the traditional sconce. His lighting style blurs the line between art and functional design. Materiality: The handblown glass adds rusticity to the sophisticated design, while the polished brass balances the fixture with modern simplicity. craftsmanship: The handmade process breathes life into a product and into our homes. I believe the importance of the maker movement is in keeping the tradition of skilled labor alive; it is design and skill passed down from one generation to the next. final thought: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’’—William Morris

Timelessness: Investing in steadfast brands, like Sahco, is paramount in many of my projects. My clients want to know that the products we use have stood and will stand the test of time. Perspective: Clouds is a way to incorporate an organic approach to projects without diluting a structured and studied interior. Color: I’m always looking for a sophisticated way to introduce color; the fluid, adaptable palette of Clouds fits this challenging task. Design: I see myself using the muted tones of this fabric in bedrooms, mostly—Roman shades, upholstered headboards or on the walls.

happy hues and bold palettes turn the home’s hardest-working spaces into functional showpieces that think outside the box. written by brielle m. ferreira it’s easy to see why white kitchens and bathrooms are so popular in the modern home—like a signature dish perfected over many potlucks and dinner parties, they are ideal for the chef who wants to play it safe. they’re elegant and classic and show no signs of going out of style. for those seeking a little more adventure in their interiors, though, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the allure of color, of bold, lookat-me spaces that demand the spotlight. thankfully, today’s bold kitchens and baths banish all memories of the avocado refrigerators and pale pink tiles of yesteryear; instead, their vibrant palettes borrow their power from high fashion and graphic style for spaces that are decidedly à la mode.

interior designer andrew howard cooks up a dreamy kitchen scene in varying shades of blue for this familyfriendly florida kitchen. andrewjhoward.com How did you decide on the serene blue palette? it was a happy accident. we were looking for countertops, and we weren’t quite sure what we wanted to do, but when we found this interesting blue marble, everything clicked. the whole kitchen was then born from there.
favorite thing about a colorful kitchen? it has a special “wow” factor you don’t get from a more traditional space. the kitchen is where your friends and family spend about 90 percent of their time when they’re with you; it’s fun to give them something they’ve never seen.
What would you say to those afraid of using color in a kitchen? don’t be! even if you’re a little hesitant to paint all of your cabinets a certain shade, you can bring in color in small ways for a big impact. a hint of hue on your backsplash or barstools can go a long way.

SO REFRESHING The dreamy mixology depicted in powerhouse recipe developer María del Mar Sacasa and photographer Tara Striano’s beautifully bound volume, Summer Cocktails, proves that there’s more than one way to bring color to the kitchen, like through pretty garnishes and powerful potions crafted to keep the party going. quirkbooks.com
LEAFY GREENS Legendary Palm Beach ceramicist Dodie Thayer’s signature lettuce ware has been highly coveted by a rather formidable crowd—think Brooke Astor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—since she threw the first plate back in the 1960s. However, with the supply of the iconic green (Duncan Irish Green to be exact) tableware in serious decline, it was only a matter of time before these vintage beauties went extinct; that is before Tory Burch stepped in, with the fashion heavy hitter recently teaming up with Thayer to put the preppy staples back into production and back on kitchen shelves for good. toryburch.com
MAKE A SPLASH
Glass mosaic tiles from Ann Sacks in navy, turquoise, gray and white are laid together in thick chevron stripes that transform the backsplash of this crisp kitchen into a work of art. The space, by San Francisco-based designer Ali Davin, relies on this colorful statement piece to bring life to an otherwise simple, Shaker-style kitchen. “When you have a bold graphic moment like the backsplash, you can’t give it a lot of other competition,” says Davin. “It’s important to keep the built-in lines clean and ornamentation and hardware to a minimum.” jutehome.com
COOL RUNNINGS The newest colorway from vintage-inspired appliance company Smeg—a sunny modern yellow meant to become the focal point of the kitchen—embraces the cool retro style of the brand’s signature refrigerators and ovens with a bit of extra flair not meant for the faint of heart. smegusa.com 194 / LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN

Take me through your creative process when tackling this space. The house has a very clean-lined aesthetic and a specific Asian influence, with a sense of order and symmetry in the design. I mimicked that feel outside by creating an ideal place for outdoor entertaining, maximized with an abundance of seating that can be easily moved for entertaining purposes. The result is a space similar to a living room, but in an eco-conscious outdoor setting amid native grasses and a negative-edge pool.

Tell me more about the materials you chose. There is a sense of order between the furnishings and landscape that perfectly complements the home. The materials that we used indoors are also repeated in the outdoor furniture, creating a peaceful palette both inside and out. The outdoor furnishings were chosen for their clean lines and low profiles that don’t deter from the view. The teak was selected for its durability against the rainfall and accented with plush custom cushions.

What makes this space ideal for entertaining and gathering? My go-to for outdoor projects is to include a large coffee table suitable for plenty of hors d’oeuvres and drinks. We also incorporated concealed path and pool lighting. For this particular project, it was also necessary to choose a sumptuous fabric that can be easily cleaned for the growing family who resides here. The simplicity of the Asian architecture paired with the panoramic views makes for the perfect space for get-togethers.

The room feels so open, light and airy. How did you achieve this? The furniture layout was the most crucial element of the design. The client, a landscape designer, crafted an incredible outdoor area that this room looks out onto, so we decided to put the focus on the exteriors. This room also receives an abundance of light in the afternoon, so our color palette is really a response to that light— a palette driven by natural tones and ornamented with deep indigo blues, as one of the clients is an avid surfer and loves the ocean.
What did you do to make this space look so well-curated? We sourced pieces with unique finishes that add a subtle complexity to the space, such as vintage brass, rustic ceramics, blackened steel, onyx and ebonized oak. Also, as the shelving units are quite large and geometrical, we chose ceramics and sculptural works of different scale to create a sense of both balance and off-balance. We love mixing materials to create an unexpected combination and adore spaces that look ‘well-traveled’ but also casually collected.
Does the mix of fabrics and textures lend to those unexpected combinations you mentioned? We are drawn towards rooms that are rich in neutrals and layered with subtle textures and materials. If you look closely there are a million different shades of the same color found within a variety of solid and printed materials such as linen and velvet. The vintage rug has this amazing rustic texture, and the lines in the rug mirror the light fixture above. Our goal was to create a casual, open room for the day that easily transitions into evening.

With scenery this beautiful, I’m assuming it was your inspiration. The environment and location of the lot played the key definitive role in the design of the master suite. Utmost care was given to maintain the existing bluff edge and landscape, with its incredible geography and landforms, and so we oriented the room to create a private and pristine waterside setting that allows the clients to revel in the ocean vista. The master bedroom should feel like a luxurious retreat, an oasis where the owners can feel pampered.
Tell me more about the natural palette and materials you chose. We worked indoors and out with a palette of materials that included reclaimed brick, roof tiles and stone. The reclaimed brick is used extensively on the interior to provide a texture and color to supplement the traditional Venetian plaster walls. The owners desired to express a minimalist personality as a defining characteristic of their home, with a design, material expression and detailing like no other. The result intuitively captures their desired lifestyle.
How did you seamlessly blend the interior with the exterior? The clients wished to have a home that embodied the relaxing coastal setting, as well as a plan that expressed relationships to the outdoor living spaces. The view orients to long-range ocean scenery and a private beach, so we framed it with floor-to-ceiling corner glass and added steelframed bifolding and disappearing doors that provide natural light. The ultimate reward is that all of the clients needs, desires and wishes had been achieved.

What are some of your favorite plants and blooms to work with in your designs? i love crabapples, as they are quintessentially midwest and a wonderful way to shake off the cold. fothergilla “Blue shadow” is another personal favorite, as its glaucous blue leaves can brighten a semi-shady spot all summer long. Share some exciting trends in landscape architecture and outdoor living. right now, we’re seeing a lot of outdoor kitchens, fire pits and water features. none are new, necessarily, but the demand keeps rising. also, low-maintenance plantings, indigenous flora and organic gardening are huge now. best way to integrate water features and pools into verdant surroundings? in a formal garden, lining up the water feature on a critical axial line or controlling a hierarchy of sights and sounds with its location may prove optimal. using strong geometry in the design of the feature will help, as well. landscapeartistry.net

MARK DREXLER + ASSOCIATES Prescient vision, engaged collaboration and flawless execution: These are hallmarks of successful projects, regardless of size, budget or design. The professionals at Mark Drexler + Associates are keenly aware that they must demonstrate the capacity to achieve these goals every day, on every project. With more than 40 years of experience in building, and a background in architecture and design, Mark Drexler, president of MDA, is able to contribute significantly and successfully to provide end results of meaningful and discerning quality, but more importantly, help create a place someone will call home. “We are stewards of our clients’ interests and well-being during the process of construction and are committed to the relentless pursuit of what the architect or designer is striving to achieve,” Drexler says. As a boutique builder working from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles, MDA is decidedly hands-on and passionate about details, but it also understands that the shared journey to a client’s new home should be an enjoyable experience along the way. The breadth of MDA’s portfolio spans countries and continents, including Africa, England and Italy, and many domestic locales, in addition to Southern California. The team of professionals at MDA endeavors to be educated so that they remain at the forefront of the industry, but have not lost sight of the region’s architectural history and its inhabitants’ common heritage, as they support institutions that promote conservancy. The preferred style of design for MDA is work that is thoughtfully rendered and constructed with skill and mastery. “There is no greater compliment than when a former client returns again and again, after completion of the initial project, with exciting new projects to undertake together,” Drexler says.

AS K T HE EXP E RT What are your favorite styles to work on and why? I have worked on medieval buildings with foundations carved into rock by Etruscans, a 500-year-old Italian palazzo, projects of varying traditional styles, and contemporary architecture. I enjoy being a part of any well-executed design. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? Purpose, deliberation, spontaneity, courage, fear, fun, repose, stimulation, love and the perspective of time. What is inspiring you now? I grew up in a succession of midcentury modern houses that my father designed and built, and while I appreciate all types of architecture, this brand of modernism is close to my heart.

NAOMI KOBRIN ARCHITERIOR DESIGN Naomi Kobrin approaches each design project with an intuitive sense of form and function infused with creative spontaneity. “I am always thinking about mobility and visual surprise—how people move and feel through different environments,” says Kobrin, who leads a Los Angelesbased residential interior design studio. It is this particular sense of creating memorable spaces that inspires the designer to use a unique range of materials when designing interior architecture as well as custom cabinetry, furniture pieces and lighting. For Kobrin, the design process is based in her visual acuity and curiosity as both an artist and problem-solver. She explains, “Taking ideas from the drawing stage to a flushed-out image and presenting it to the client is great fun for me. That ‘Aha!’ moment when my drawing delivers enough visual cues that it practically becomes real on the page is totally satisfying.” Kobrin works closely with her clients to ensure a successful collaboration that is rewarding and inspiring. The results are intimately sophisticated homes that are enjoyed by a notable clientele including Matthew and Camila McConaughey. The range of Kobrin’s aesthetics is attributed to her travels abroad and educated eye. “I enjoy collecting special objects that I find unusual or unexpected. When I see things through my artistic eye, kaleidoscopically, it may inspire something I want to wear, must live with or stand on.” She brings possibility and excitement into her design philosophy and expands on her love of art: “Art is a major force in design and architecture at this moment and it is so thrilling to me.”

History, love and the beach are the influences which propel Noelle Parks to create. The interior designer of nearly a decade runs her eponymous firm, Noelle Interiors, out of Manhattan Beach, California, a location she credits with inspiring her design process and business philosophy. “Living in Manhattan Beach has impacted my way of thinking, loving and designing more than anything,” she says. Her studio exudes a sense of comfort and relaxation, which was the intention from its inception. “I maintain a fun and carefree work environment. I’ve had clients joke about wanting a desk in the shop so they can hang out all day,” she says. Parks’ easy, elegant interiors, offering cohesion that flows effortlessly, are created with architecture and the client in mind. “The design starts with the architecture,” she asserts. “Complementing the structure with interior elements that enrich the space and bring out the client’s personality is what’s most important.”

Is your work easily recognizable? Why or why not? I take a unique approach to each project depending on the client’s style. The architecture of the home and client’s personality really drive the individual forms and textures that are applied to the design. How do you stay abreast of new trends and styles? Magazines, traveling and conversations with friends. I love exploring different parts of the world with my friends, from beach villas on the Italian coast to rustic lodges in the mountains. There is so much to learn and absorb everywhere you turn! What is one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? I spent part of my life growing up in a solar-powered house in the mountains. I learned at a young age how much I appreciate nature and the fundamentals of preservation.

How do you define a successful project? A happy client is a happy home and successful project to me. I strive to weave the client’s personality into the structural design elements and distinctive furnishings. What is your most prized possession? My group of very close friends. I wouldn’t be where I am today as a designer without their support and influence. California is a place that I will always be able to call home because of them.

F
or architect Trevor Abramson and designer Audrey Alberts, a mutual admiration of each other’s skills brought an especially insightful collaboration to the creation of a couple’s Los Angeles house. “Trevor is a very thoughtful architect, and our two offices were very comfortable with each other,” Alberts says. “It made a big difference with how we all worked together.” That Abramson and his partner, Douglas Teiger, had also worked with the homeowners before added another element of trust. “They are no-ego people who love architecture, art and design,” shares Abramson. Already familiar with his clients’ penchant for contemporary design, Abramson had to reconcile their aesthetic desires with a very particular set of restrictions— both philosophical and physical. To begin with, the homeowners association specified just 10 percent of the roofline could be flat, “but the owners wanted modern architecture,” the architect, who worked with project architect David Pascu on the job, says with a laugh. “We had to create a house that had modern sensibilities and elements but still met local requirements.” Gently pitching the roof and finishing it with slate for a crisp edge and sharp corners that gave it a modern bent addressed both issues. It also helped ease the transition to more contemporary exterior materials— smooth-troweled white stucco; dark bronze metal-clad windows, doors, lintels and columns; walnut bands and Wisconsin limestone. Where to site the house brought its own set of challenges. “It was a nice-size property, but it was narrow compared to its depth,” Abramson recalls. “Our goal was to create a motor court on the entry side while maintaining the view overlooking the golf course and having room for a garden and infinity pool—all without filling the entire lot. It was a delicate balance.”
“The house is more modern Than TradiTional wiThouT being super-white bauhaus.” -trevor AbrAmson
To execute the house’s clean, precise lines, builders Andrew Jagoda and his partner, Isaac Zachary, came aboard. “Modern homes are our specialty, and they require very specific patience,” says Jagoda, who was on the site every day. “You can’t hide mistakes. Attention to details, like where the lines meet, creates a beautiful experience.” The experience begins with just the touch of a hand on the grand front door—measuring nearly 12 by 8 feet—that pivots to reveal the home’s open plan. “It’s a solid statement,” Abramson says. “It establishes a sense of porosity.” Rich, tactile materials, such as largeformat porcelain tile flooring and the glass and walnut of the staircase, hint at the quiet, chic interiors. “It’s more modern than traditional without being super-white Bauhaus,” says Abramson. Details such as lowered ceilings in the kitchen and family room create intimacy, and others, such as wood-plank ceilings, layer the space. Their simplicity and elegance meshed effortlessly with Alberts’ furnishing program. “My personal taste—and my interiors—are on the minimal side,” she says. “The furniture has to work for the job and allow people to flow around easily.” Alberts’ furniture plan relied on tailored shapes in warm neutrals, punctuated by the occasional burst of blue. For several pieces, she called on Chicago-based Maxine Snider. “She was willing to do a custom design or adjust something for us so it would work better,” Alberts explains. “Her pieces are classic and unusual with a contemporary feel but not too modern.” Another custom piece, a sizable dining table by Bulthaup, appears in the breakfast room adjacent to the custom kitchen, which the architects laid out and then collaborated with Bulthaup kitchen designer Chris Tosdevin to fine-tune. Throughout the house, art by both established and emerging artists adorns the walls. In the living room, large-scale paintings by Deanna Thompson and Audra Weaser hang opposite each other. A mixed-media piece by Laddie John Dill graces the dining room, and a seascape by Warner Friedman brings an inkling of the outdoors to the basement billiard room. More of the couple’s collection appears outside, where bronze sculptures by Guy Dill can be found. Landscape designer Lisa Zeder kept the generous outdoor spaces elegant and understated. “We treated the garden as an extension of the greens and brought in California sycamores to humanize the space and create view corridors,” she says. Working with a palette emphasizing pinks, burgundies and blues for the rear garden, Zeder brought in ornamental grasses for soft movement, incorporated custom planters designed by the architects to mesh with the hardscape and dotted the property with succulent-filled bowls. For Alberts, the true measure of a successful project comes “when everything is installed, and I look at the owners and say, ‘Yes, they belong here,’ ” she says. “That’s the way I feel about this house.” Adds Abramson: “They had great faith in us, and the house became a reflection of them. It’s fantastic.” luxe interiors + design / 239

or Kim Rodosky and Kim Johnson, the duo behind Newport Beach’s design-minded shop 503 Found, launching their venture meant thinking big. “We jumped in with two feet,” says Johnson, who has a background in retail. “We moved so quickly and started out so strong that I was learning what a POS system was while ringing up our first orders.” The key to the pair’s continued success is a varied inventory driven by the singular vision of Rodosky, who brings her design experience to the table. “I select what I would put in my own home and design projects,” she explains. “I like a collected look, and I try to bring that into the store so that the designer with a deadline can get everything she needs here and still create something that looks like it evolved over time.” On any given visit, the shop might feature handwoven Peruvian rugs and vintage barware, not to mention furnishings by Cisco Home and Julian Chichester. Rodosky also has a fondness for pottery and recently brought in rustic ceramic pitchers from France. “Designers usually head up to L.A. for it,” she says, “and now it’s here.” Rodosky and Johnson also emphasize the work of local artists and artisans, such as Kristen Casey. “We love how they bring a different flavor,” Johnson says. “And our customers love to come in to see what their neighbors have created.” Adds Rodosky: “We really have some amazing and accomplished people who live in our community, and it’s great to give them a platform.” A former boat building space near the water serves as the backdrop for the owners’ eclectic offerings. The structure’s edgy vibe was catnip to Rodosky and Johnson. “I just fell in love with this location,” says Rodosky. “It’s the perfect setting for what we wanted to do.” The floors are concrete, the roof is tin and the high ceilings are painted black. “It’s just so cool,” Johnson exclaims. Today, the duo continues to think big. “We would like to be a go-to stop for everything from just inspiration for your home to last-minute gifts or assistance with complete remodels,” Rodosky says. “Our greatest challenge is not to overthink everything and just go with our instincts.”

B
efore fate intervened in the form of an invitation to a neighborhood party, Chad Eisner’s clients had been living in their Laguna Beach house for going on five years. They loved its stunning ocean views and easy access to the beach. Less beloved were the heavy, traditional-feeling interiors, a far cry from their own preference for a simpler, more modern look. Smitten with their neighbors’ contemporary home and its sleek interiors, the work of Eisner, the couple promptly phoned the designer and asked for a consultation. Noted for his tailored, layered spaces, Eisner immediately saw a disconnect between his clients’ light, youthful spirit and their home’s dark interiors. “They’re energetic, vivacious people, and the interiors did not reflect them,” he confides. “Every wall had deep color-washed roses, peaches and yellows that didn’t do anything for the architecture. The space has beautiful thick plaster walls, high ceilings and rich wood tones and beams. All these dark, hot colors made it feel oppressive and closed-in.”
The couple asked Eisner for a wholly unique look that would combine a modern, somewhat midcentury vibe, with the sand-between-the-toes livability of a seaside resort. “They wanted kids, neighbors and family members to be able to come over, walk in with sand on their feet, sit in the living room and not feel as if they are going to wrinkle the brand-new linen sofa,” says the designer. Eisner began by removing all the color from the walls. “From there, I worked closely with the homeowners to get just the right white for the milk-brushed finish,” he says. “Within a week’s time of getting that color, it was like night and day.” The soft patina captured the depth and shadows of the hand-plastered walls, and, notes Eisner, “suddenly things were light and open.” Window treatments received a close look, too. “We took down some heavier curtains and replaced them with sheer, unlined versions throughout the more formal areas,” Eisner explains. “This house looks out toward the ocean and gets really beautiful morning light, so being able to let that in was key.”

“IT WAS LIKE WEAVING A BLANKET. WE’D ThrEAD IN SOMEThING CONTEMPOrArY AND PAIr IT WITh SOMEThING WITh AGE AND PATINA.” -ChAD EISNEr Eisner then swapped out the heavy wrought-iron light fixtures, replacing them with more ethereal versions. “We chose fixtures with exposed glass—things that felt airy,” he notes. “In the hallway, for instance, we used transparent blue-colored glass pendants that the eye and sunlight can travel through.” For the furnishings, the designer combined a host of new finds with some old favorites. “My clients had some great pieces already and some they just didn’t want to let go of,” 258 / luxe interiors + design
says the designer. “For example, they had an antique rug that they purchased while traveling. It had been in another room in the house. We moved it to the living room and it became the determining factor for the look.” The rug brings a splash of color and a Bohemian underpinning for the chic, playful space, where it happily mixes with traditional forms (think tufted armchairs) and a pair of rockers covered in luxurious Tibetan lamb. “It was like weaving a blanket. We’d thread in something contemporary and pair it with something with age and patina,” Eisner recalls. Further enriching the tapestry are pieces with the midcentury modern vibe beloved by his clients. The final touch was a palette of cool, serene colors that stand out against the creamy walls. A blue-andgray scheme appears in rugs and upholstery and on the lower half of the walls in the master bedroom. Complementing each room are vibrant works of contemporary art the clients assembled with the help of art advisor Hayley Miner.

“Their art collection before was more centered around the house’s previous aesthetic—period pieces and landscapes,” says Eisner. “My client told me she wanted to incorporate more modern pieces, so that’s why I introduced her to Hayley.” With Miner, the owner assembled a carefully curated collection focused on abstract contemporary works with a strong conceptual edge, heavy on artists from California. “She’s been collecting ever since,” Eisner notes. “It’s been great seeing that love of art flourish.”
Recast over time, the house now authentically reflects its residents. “We worked slowly on this project, building the collection of furnishings as we needed them. In truth, it was a test of patience for me,” confides Eisner. “I’m used to working on ground-up projects where everything is new and things go quickly. This was a gradual process of layering elements to create a new approach to the house that spoke to and from the homeowners. That’s really important to me, because when I’m done with my work, they are the ones who have to live, eat and sleep there.”

“MY GOAL IS TO CREATE ONE NEW, WEIRD THING EVERY DAY.”
M
y brother is a musician, and sometimes he just needs to jam,” says Eric Trine. “I think there’s that same sense in my own work.” In fact, the self-described “maker of things” says he feels an almost physical yearning to create when the more prosaic side of running his Long Beach-based furnishings practice gobbles up precious studio time. “My goal,” Trine says, “is to create one new, weird thing every day.” While the bulk of his furniture designs originate as commissions from private clients, some evolve from unstructured “playtime,” when he manipulates materials into various geometric forms with no thought beyond the sheer joy of the experience. One of Trine’s biggest hits, a steel octahedron side table, was inspired by triangles that he welded together during an especially productive session. When Trine sees potential in a form, he begins to experiment, tweaking dimensions until a function suggests itself. Some pieces are electroplated in copper, brass or chrome finishes while others are powder-coated in bold colors. The vibrant hues are both a reaction to the preponderance of raw metal and rustic wood in contemporary design and also a reflection of his personality. “I dyed my hair pink and wore a pink shirt and tie to prom because it went with my date’s dress,” he explains. “I’ve never had a problem with color.” Trine’s path to furniture design unfolded organically. After his marriage in 2008, “My wife and I needed things for our place, so I started making it,” he recalls. “It led to projects for friends and slowly became bona fide client work.” He then headed to Portland, Oregon, and a graduate program in applied craft and design. In 2013, he skipped his graduation in favor of launching his work at New York Design Week. Since then, the designer’s lively aesthetic has gained him partnerships with brands including West Elm and a loyal following, stoked by a robust presence on Instagram. A valuable promotional tool, Trine emphasizes that his designs must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. He singles out a hexagonal rod that he uses for the frame of his Rod+Weave chair. “It’s so minimal, but it’s also rewarding in a tactile way,” he explains. “I want people to touch and feel these things.”

esigners and architects are masters at dreaming up ingenious ways to meet their clients’ requests. But the divergent requirements for a sizable property near Santa Barbara required more than a little creative sleight of hand from its design team. The owners’ longtime designer, Chicago-based Tom Stringer, sums up the challenge: “Our mandate was, ‘Fully develop this site to its maximum potential, give us every facility and luxury that we could ever want, and yet make it feel simple.’ ” He laughs. “Problem-solving is fun,” he adds. “If you tell me to make it giant, yet feel small and really simple, but ultimately it’s super-complicated, now that’s interesting.” From the start, the wife envisioned a place where she could kick off her shoes and not feel like anything was too precious. Her husband, meanwhile, wanted a mix of public and private spaces, a sound buffer from road noise and his own personal oasis with a lap pool. Also in the mix were bedrooms for the couple’s grown sons, well-appointed guest quarters, a tennis court, swimming pool and spaces for entertaining. Architect Mary Andrulaitis echoes Stringer’s assessment. “The clients had a huge program,” she says. “Though the property is over 4 acres, there were a lot of constraints on the site—we had to work around the protected trees; there was also a geological bluff setback that we couldn’t build on. The challenge in the end was to design the house so that it wouldn’t feel as big as it is.” Fortunately, the property offered a blank slate. Set high on a bluff above the ocean, it was planted with oak, cypress and eucalyptus trees and occupied by a board-and-batten cottage dating from the 1940s. “That cottage definitely set the tone,” Stringer recalls. The feeling of simplicity is evident at the house’s understated entrance, where a stone-paved courtyard opens to a long gallery, highlighted by a large abstract work by Joan Mitchell. Just beyond, two stone fireplaces flank the airy living room, where a painting by Cecily Brown adds a burst of color. “Scale was important,” says Andrulaitis, who collaborated with partner Andy Neumann on the design. “The fireplaces are grand but not too oversize.” Andrulaitis and Stringer also devised ways to suggest that the house had been added to over time. The two-story core consists of the living room, dining room, kitchen and family room, and a master suite upstairs. At one end are bedrooms for the couple’s children, and on the other is the guest suite. “The dialogue of materials changes subtly between the main block and the wings—we wanted those to feel like addons,” says Stringer. The living room’s easy mix of old and new epitomizes Stringer’s approach for the main spaces: clean-lined, classic seating upholstered in white paired with a selection of contemporary and antique pieces. The boys’ bedrooms are more consistently contemporary, while the guest wing has a more traditional European aesthetic. 276 / luxe interiors + design

“Our mandate was, ‘Fully develOp this site, give us every luxury that we cOuld want, and yet make it Feel simple.’” -tOm stringer
Tucked in a lush corner bordered by king, Kentia and queen palms; giant bird of paradise and eucalyptus trees, the lap pool, by Village Pool Builders, also serves as a reflecting pool. Cal-Western Landscape installed the gardens.
Envisioned as a Zen getaway and crafted to California earthquake standards in Bali and reassembled on-site, the open-air teak folly is the husband’s refuge—a place for reading, meditating or getting a massage.

The master bathroom is a peaceful retreat, with a freestanding tub from Waterworks and a pair of antique French armchairs. As throughout the house, the floors are American oak, by Artisan Wood Floors.
Throughout are one-of-a-kind pieces from the couple’s collection, such as the antique doors from Turkey that lead to the guest wing and the Assyrian chest in master bedroom. Despite its size (the house alone is nearly 11,000 square feet), the property reveals itself slowly. “You come in and see the gate house,” Stringer points out. “Then there’s a tennis cabana, but the court itself is obscured. When the house comes into view, you don’t see the totality of it. Even on the ocean side, it feels smaller than it is. We worked hard to break down the scale, so that you never go, ‘Wow!’ ” To help buffer noise from the highway, a stream meanders through the property. “We wanted it to look natural,” says landscape architect Scott Menzel, who assisted the since-retired Sydney Baumgartner on the project. It’s programmed so that during peak traffic hours, the water runs faster. Even the stairs down to the beach are miked to amplify the sound of the surf. Baumgartner and Menzel, who now has a firm of his own, enhanced the feeling of discovery as you move
about the property. “It’s like there are hidden areas just waiting to be explored,” says Menzel. None is more hidden than the husband’s lap pool, which terminates at a teak folly that looks as if it was plucked from a Balinese resort. Designed by the architects, it was crafted in Indonesia, shipped to California in pieces and reassembled on-site. To ensure that the finishes were seamless and that all the behind-the-scenes mechanical systems on the property functioned flawlessly, builder Paul Franz relied on superintendent/project manager Brian Fuller and superintendent Joe Hahn. Having worked on homes in the area for years, Franz is accustomed to complicated projects. “Everything here looks simple, but it isn’t,” he says. “That’s the complexity of a house of this scale and the systems involved.” In the end, the team created a one-of-a-kind beach property that is more than a sum of its parts. “This is a place to relax,” says Stringer. “The whole point is to be able to run around in jeans and a T-shirt.”
In the master bedroom, an openbeam ceiling with intersecting gables complements the tongueand-groove walls. Windows shaded by draperies in a Schumacher fabric allow light to shine onto the David Iatesta Crone bed from John Rosselli & Associates in Chicago.

Above: Vintage Michael Taylor lounges, in Perennials fabric, and Great Outdoors ottomans stand on a terrace off the guest suite, which occupies a separate wing. The wood doors and windows are by Architectural Millwork; the stonework is by Pat Scott Masonry. Right: Landscape architects Sydney Baumgartner and Scott Menzel’s plan for the gardens emphasizes less formal plantings and gives the owners and their guests hidden areas to be explored. Monterey cypresses line the garden along the bluff.
286 / luxe interiors + design
In contrast to the rest of the house, the guest wing’s aesthetic runs European. The sofa and tub chairs are from Holly Hunt; an Edelman Leather material wraps the ottoman. The drapery and shade fabric is from Kerry Joyce Textiles. Above is a chandelier found in Argentina.

LUXE CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF PDC AT WEST WEEK
Luxe Interiors + Design Editor in Chief Pamela Jaccarino moderated an up-close-and-personal conversation with celebrated tastemaker and designer Mary McDonald at the Pacific Design Center for this year’s West Week. It gave the audience a chance to gain insight into McDonald’s creative passions, how her sensibilities and inspirations inform her work, and what’s next for this fearless diva of design, including her newest collection for Schumacher. The panel was followed by a lovely reception at Schumacher and a sneak peek into McDonald’s latest collection.

LISA BARTLESON AT FP CONTEMPORARY
This past spring FP Contemporary celebrated Los Angeles-based artist Lisa Bartleson’s exhibition “Where I Live.” The exhibit explored the difference between the light in Washington, where she grew up, versus the light in Southern California and made for a colorful evening for art critics, museum directors, collectors and artists to enjoy.
