Where Are You heAded? In the world of design, journeying—in some way, shape or form—is a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along. If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journey—whether it’s as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseas—further encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

What’s happening: in major cities, there’s been an increase in awareness regarding the benefits of living with plants and other natural elements. we’re seeing more and more vertical gardens, green walls, urban farms, etc.

What’s trending: i continue to see a huge growth in sustainable design. i’m currently working on a project in las Vegas with Pardee homes called inspirada. we’re really focused on using sustainable materials and solar components to make individual homes as self-sufficient as possible.

Having a moment: i’ve always been very impressed by the work of Daniel arsham, whom i love and have been following for some time now. he just presented a large installation in collaboration with Cos at the salone del Mobile in Milan. Can’t get enough of… The work of fashion show producer etienne russo; what he’s been able to do for karl lagerfeld and Chanel is beautiful. i’m very much into creating different worlds and the art of the mise-en-scène when it comes to stage design. Not to be missed: There’s nowhere like the fairchild Tropical Botanic garden if you’re looking to find inspiration from nature. The terrace at the Pérez art Museum Miami and the new 1 hotel & homes in south Beach are also definitely worth a visit. on your radar: Miami landscape architect Matthew lewis recreates outdoor spaces in a dreamy, exuberant way, building tropical fantasies that utilize our native plant species. Go-to design read: The book i look at again and again is Diana yakeley’s Indoor Gardening.

for the design-obsessed: The Vagabond hotel is one of my favorite spots in Miami right now. it was recently meticulously restored and is a delight for design lovers—or anyone for that matter. it’s my go-to place for a fun cocktail with friends. biggest inspiration: Design is always changing and that in itself keeps me on my toes. i’m obsessed with scanning instagram and design blogs for new products and ideas to help jump-start my creativity. Spotlight on: The resurgence of american manufacturing is really intriguing me currently. it’s amazing to see all of the innovation in this arena recently and how many major retailers are getting on board. it will be interesting to see if we’re able to fully pull this industry back stateside and retake our place on the world stage as the premier country for furniture manufacturing.

favorite blooms: i love working with exotic orchids, and i’ve been happy to find quite a few new specimens lately. i’m also fond of cataleas, vandas, dendrobiums and succulents.

favorite thing in inventory: we have a product called stikwood. it’s a self-adhesive wood wall treatment that gives the illusion of a real wood wall, but it’s actually very thin strips of veneer that you can install yourself.

furniture to fashion. The groundbreaking architecture that is popping up in this area is amazing, and i’m constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next. Day trip: i can’t remember the last afternoon i took off, but i would love to pay a much overdue visit to the everglades. i also really enjoy spending my downtime in Crandon Park. you can get lost in it all day. it’s a beautiful place. must-see destinations: I love The Wolfsonian in Miami Beach. I’ve known founder Micky Wolfson for years, and he is doing such important work in the area. I’m also enjoying watching the talented team at the Bakehouse Art Complex come into its own. Up next: I’m working on a fashion book, collecting all my work from years photographing for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. But right now, nature is what I love most. We’re putting together an exhibit of my nature photography in London with architect Zaha Hadid. We’re good friends, and our work is similar in our love of organic shapes.

materials of the moment: Photoluminescent surfaces, acrylic panels and paint, and the printable nylon powders and liquid resins that are used in rapid prototyping, which I’m very interested in as of late. Hot in miami: The blossoming of the art industry, specifically its growth and expansion into areas like Little Haiti, where new artist studios, international galleries and a multimillion-dollar cultural center are truly redefining the area.

Keep an eye on… Daniele Lago. He’s a talented designer and founder of an innovative eponymous furniture company in Italy. His closets, kitchens and door systems are extremely sophisticated and have the power to change the way we live.

go-to event: I never miss the Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) School Showcase. I always discover something interesting and inspiring there each year. Best miami retreat: South Pointe Park has it all. It’s the fulcrum of the city, as it serves as the entrance to the Port of Miami and offers the most remarkable panoramic vistas of the water and all the action. 104 / luxe interiors + design

next up: I’m launching a new concept for my practice in the fall called “Alive.” It has to do with the way we integrate interior design and architecture to create a unique living environment that better accommodates our clients’ needs and the way they live. on your radar: Landscape architect Margarita Blanco at Arquitectonica Geo is a major innovator. Her work at the Pérez Art Museum Miami is nothing short of inspiring. Oscar Glottman is an architect and founder of an eponymous home furnishings showroom in the Design District. For inspiring interiors, he examines the scenes of some of his favorite Peter Greenaway films.

Biggest challenge: I think photographing Nancy Reagan at the White House. You can imagine giving orders in the White House, just walking in and making her do what we needed for the shot. But in the end, it turned out beautiful. We had her the whole day and had a wonderful time together. modern muses: I’m interested in photographers who know how to appreciate and convey beauty, like Steven Klein, Annie Leibovitz and Bruce Weber, who was a mentor and very good friend when I started out in the 1980s. I’m also a big fan of classic fashion portraiture from Irving Penn and Deborah Turberville. Best place to get lost: I love going to the Miami Symphony. We need to develop more of our own art and music in the city and the symphony’s director, Eduardo Marturet, and his beautiful wife, Athina, have done so much to nurture that growth already. travel inspiration: My eye for photography was developed in large part thanks to growing up in Iran. Everything there is so sensual, like the architecture and the way we look at life. Then, I learned a lot about sophistication from my time in Paris and London. Iran Issa-Khan is a celebrated fashion and portrait photographer turned nature buff who hates being in front of the camera as much as she loves being behind it.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duo’s success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold. Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scene—paintbrush in hand—captivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. “Her textiles are so chic and livable,” says Reynolds. “Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.” Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyn’s Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. “We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age,” says Waggoner of the partnership. “Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.” Studio Four’s next debut proves that the art of plaster isn’t lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian

plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. “We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls,” says Waggoner, “and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.” With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Four’s Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. “Design is a luxury,” says Reynolds. “It should always inspire and never intimidate.”

An infamous, members-only social club that once entertained the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor is being boldly reimagined by acclaimed architect Richard Meier. Located in the South Florida town of Surfside, the Surf Club will be a visual dialogue between the old and the new, transforming the original 1930s club into a Four Seasons boutique hotel and residences. Meier’s material palette will be simple: Floor-to-ceiling glass will maximize horizontal views of the Atlantic Ocean, while local surfaces, namely flooring of porous coral stone, will detail the exterior. CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHICAGO Founded in 1890 by families of American sports royalty (think Wrigley and Spalding), the Chicago Athletic Association has been a fixture in the Windy City for more than a century. The famed location, originally designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb, has now been revamped into a luxury lifestyle hotel by design duo Roman and Williams. “We were devoted to preserving the character and details of this historic building while creating a new language,” say the designers. The aesthetic maintains the building’s original fireplaces with bas-relief wood carvings, expansive marble staircases and stained glass, yet speaks to classic Americana with vintage artifacts like wooden gym ladders, Victorian-inspired lighting and leather furnishings. chicagoathletichotel.com

THE PALLADIAN HOTEL SEATTLE The Palladian Hotel, established in Seattle in 1910, was named for the Palladian windows that defined the architecture of the time. Today, San Francisco-based designer Nicole Hollis has taken this historically significant building and given it a speakeasy vibe with a sense of humor (pillows printed with Tom Selleck’s portrait, for example). Reclaimed-wood headboards juxtapose crisp, white Frette linens in the guest rooms, while brass accents, velvet upholstery and a tufted-leather check-in characterize the lobby, with the hotel’s original doors standing at the entrance of the gym. “I want my pieces to feel like something you would hand down to the next generation,” explains designer Windsor Smith in reference to her new 40-piece collection for Arteriors. Brimming with furnishings, lighting and home accents in a range of tonal golds, mixed metals and varied marbles, the line flirts between masculine and feminine dichotomies. Case in point: Smith’s Athena sconce (shown here in silver) was inspired by the delicate drop of an earring, while the Atlas sconce (shown in gold)

reveals the same caged form but in a more industrial, geometric outline. “It is through shape and silhouette,” says Smith, “that instant sculpture is evoked.” Laced with neoclassical and GrecoRoman influences, the collection leaves a rich patina in its wake, beckoning centuries past while maintaining modern relevance. “My goal was to reinterpret traditional in a beautiful, lasting way with utilitarian pieces that are meant to be used and not thought of as too precious,” Smith explains. there’s something special brewing in Miami. a city known for its sultry year-round summers and pulsating nightlife has quickly become a seedbed for culturati and starchitects the world over. case in point is the proposed Latin american art Museum, whose imposing layered structure, shown here, by New York- and Mexico city-based FR-ee/Fernando Romero enterprise will house the private collection of art aficionado Gary Nader upon its opening in 2016. Photographer Gray Malin journeys to far and away places, capturing eccentric moments that spark fantasy and wonder, like llamas adorned in balloons amidst Bolivia’s salt flats, or rainbow-hued sheep in Australia. In his new fine art series, Gray Malin at the Parker, he keeps his zest for adventure close to home, shooting at the Parker Palm Springs as exotic animals playfully explore the iconic resort that unites luxury with amusement. Malin put down his camera to discuss the enchanting series, where monkeys are bellhops and giraffes are the guests, temporarily on view at the hotel. With an infectious joie de vivre, he proves the old adage: not all who wander are lost.

How did animals become your muse? I have a deep love for flamingos and penguins and couldn’t stop envisioning them on the property. Working with them and the capuchin monkey, zebra and baby giraffe was so much fun—I wish I could live in this fantasy every day. Any divas on set? We had trainers to direct the crew and myself on how to interact with them to keep them as happy models. Zack the zebra wasn’t much of a fan of the balloons, as they kept popping, but he was a professional and we got the shot. Images of animals in dreamlike settings are one part of your repertoire, but you’re also known for aerial shots of beach scenes. How do you capture the perfect composition? When I’m in the air, people and objects begin to stand out and

form patterns below. Once I’m up there, everything magically comes together visually for me and I’m able to capture the natural art that is being created below in the distance. What’s the most daring stunt you’ve done to get the perfect shot? Standing on a 10-foot inflatable boat in the waters of Antarctica, shooting beach balls up against icebergs the size of a skyscraper that could break apart at any moment. It was the thrill of a lifetime. You’ve said your favorite part of your job is getting to see the world. Can you offer a piece of travel advice to those filled with the same wanderlust? If you’re ever in Bhutan, you must visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of the country’s most sacred religious sites. Built in the 8th century on the side of a cliff, it is something of another world.

Your new fine art series focuses on exotic animals in unexpected places. What inspired the collection? Since living in Los Angeles, I’ve always enjoyed the quick escape to the desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been my longtime favorite hotel there. This was a chance to let my imagination run wild, and apparently it ran right into a menagerie of wild animals enjoying the hotel with me.

“It’s fantastic to drift and just let a place wash over you,” designer Tracey Boyd says of her approach to travel. Until recently, her chances to do just that were rare. As the creative director of the coveted fashion label Boyd, she was constantly in motion, creating edgy yet feminine clothing. Her singular vision—one collection featured fleece ball gowns—won her a New Generation Designer of the Year honor at the 2000 Rover British Fashion Awards, along with a devoted international following, but little time for anything else. “When I moved into a more organic way of designing, I decided to go on trips for two or three months,” she says. “I wanted to go deeper.” This change of focus yielded Aboydbazaar, a collection of clothing and accessories influenced by her biggest passions: life, travel, art and fashion.

Since then, Boyd has been busy soaking up the world’s sights and sounds, be it the modern shapes of Singapore’s skyline or the traditional beading practices in Penang. India remains a favorite destination and a constant source of inspiration. “It’s such a place of contrast,” says Boyd. “When I’m there, I have too many ideas. I have to file them away and then come home to make sense of them.” With the luxury of time, the designer can now absorb the lessons from her travels and incorporate them into her work, such as in her latest venture, Boyd, a line of furniture inspired by her journeys and currently available through Anthropologie. “I’m obsessed with finding out how things are done but looking at them in a contemporary way,” she says. “Then, I put my own spin on them.”

Next on Boyd’s itinerary? She’s heading to the U.S., where she’ll launch Boyd with Resource Decor at High Point Market in October. Imbued with color and texture, the line mixes modern and traditional shapes in materials ranging from lacquer and metal to concrete and shells. Before that, however, she’ll pack a bag with a sketch pad, a few of her Aboydbazaar shirts, a collection of black and white beads and a beloved Dries Van Noten scarf and head to Puglia, in Southern Italy, to a convent that was reinvented as a hotel. “It’s filled with tribal art, textiles and miles of books on art, sculpture and furniture. It’s like having a holiday in the most fabulous library with incredible food and beautiful gardens,” says Boyd. “It’s a mixture of work and play and sums up my ideal way to travel.”

When did you open? Arango’s newest location opened on 5864 Sunset Drive in South Miami in November of 2014. Tell us about the design of the showroom. We developed the space ourselves (a fast-paced, six-week thrill) using a durable epoxy resin with gray flecking for the floors, generous track lighting and white walls, and custom shelving and cabinets to display our incredible goods. What makes Arango different? The particular emphasis we place on art. For example, we opened the store with an exhibition showing the work of American designers Felicia Ferrone and Christopher Gentner. Since then, we have had rotating exhibits by talents like Rebecca Finell, Joe Cariati and Piet Boon. What lines do you carry? A great collection of international brands including Alessi, Stelton, Rosenthal and Kartell, to name a few. In much the same way Louis Vuitton’s signature Damier pattern has become synonymous with luxury, its newest retail destination in Miami’s Design District was also created to boast instantly recognizable style. 12 p.m. Next, visit the Plaza. It’s our main square, and it has some wonderful art and design destinations, including my favorite: Saint Dizier Home. The store features local, handmade metal furniture—from tables of all shapes and sizes to beds, stools and shelving. Artist Aletha Soulé also displays her amazing wine country-inspired ceramics here. 1 p.m. Stop for lunch at Barndiva. It’s one of my favorite spots in Healdsburg and highlights the best ingredients from Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The chef, Ryan Fancher, has worked with Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Yountville and Per Se in New York. All of the food is superb; plus, my fabric—Prima Alpaca—is used on an upholstered wall here, which provides a showcase for their rotating selection of artwork. 2 p.m. A visit to wine country would not be complete without a wine tasting. I love Copain Wines, which has a gorgeous view and interesting nontraditional wine varieties, and J Vineyards & Winery does great wine and food pairings. 4 p.m. Head to the Farmhouse Inn for a spa treatment. The spa is located in the inn’s former carriage house and incorporates ingredients from the surrounding land, such as Spring Forest honey, heirloom cider apples and fresh herbs, into their services. 7 p.m. Leave your dinner plans in the hands of Michelin-starred chef Steve Litke. His menu is inspired by the diversity of California cuisine, featuring Mexican and Italian influences.

On Trend Synergy: While contemporary is a predominant design style, fusing looks is gaining popularity, such as modern interior designs in retro styles; black and white in geometric patterns; and organic materials in a space with pops of color. Variant hues: All shades of red are in, as are many shades of green. A resurgence of yellow brass is also noteworthy. A new kind of door: Pocket doors are huge on the list, from small spaces in New York to more industrial or rustic spaces. The best of brass: Traditional polished brass works well for the classicists, whereas a more transitional setting might call for a satin brass. A note on brass: Like everything in fashion, the popularity of brass ebbs and flows; however, it is less a trend and more a classic mainstay.

Today, Poggenpohl is an industry innovator, from sustainable building methodology to fresh concepts in materials and finishes to ergonomic cabinetry. What Poggenpohl created more than a century ago is the kitchen of today: devoid of the superfluous, aesthetically modern and unabashedly centered on functionality. To further educate about the very latest in kitchen design, Poggenpohl luminaries I-ching Ueng, san Francisco showroom manager and designer, and Luiza Bajkowska, New York city Poggenpohl designer, shared a few of the most alluring new looks in the kitchen. “White gloss finishes seem to be dominating; clients want clean lines and the least amount of busyness—the opposite of the outside world, where they are being overloaded with information and clutter,” Bajkowska says. In addition to high-gloss and matte finishes, as well as handless design (a technology that speaks to the clean-lined Poggenpohl aesthetic), Ueng notes a general paradigm shift in the kitchen. “More and more people in the United states are following what has been true in Europe for many years, which is that kitchens are viewed as products, not just building materials,” she says. Ueng makes an interesting point, which might be taken a touch further: kitchens are viewed as art, not just products.

The Côte d’Azur has lured individuals of the art and design worlds for centuries, and it would appear that its most recent persuasions over fashion and interiors have us once again longing for a deep breath of that fresh coastline air. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg looked to the French Riviera for inspiration when creating her painterly Spring/Summer 2015 RTW collection, giving nods to Matisse and Picasso, frequenters of this seaside escape, through fun floral patterns displayed on wispy silks, while San Francisco interior designer Antonio Martins evoked a touch of coastal style when fashioning this impressive haphazard-tiled wall, exuding ancient references brought into modern day with a striking sideboard reminiscent of a coral reef. Many mistake the fact that simplistic design requires less effort, but quite to the contrary; it’s the simple silhouettes and uncomplicated structures that change the way design is perceived and experienced. It is this philosophy that dominates the persona of our next influential city: Copenhagen. Blonde wood, open shapes and brushed-gold finishes are constant qualities synonymous with Denmark’s capital. Barber & Osgerby illustrate the art of this finesse in the Hula stool, which by appearances is seemingly straightforward, but upon further investigation, offers itself as either fixed seating or a rocking stool. But perhaps the father of modern Danish design, Finn Juhl, whose colorful sideboard is shown, sums up quintessential Copenhagen style best of all with his clean-lined furnishings. “One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects,” he says, “but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones.”

Color can complicate the design process and take away from the bold minimalism of a silhouette. These tables, especially the painted piece, still feel simple though the pattern is random and wild. Vision: The tables are seemingly optical illusions: If you look at them long enough, you might see something unexpected.

favorite thing about a colorful kitchen? it has a special “wow” factor you don’t get from a more traditional space. the kitchen is where your friends and family spend about 90 percent of their time when they’re with you; it’s fun to give them something they’ve never seen.

What would you say to those afraid of using color in a kitchen? don’t be! even if you’re a little hesitant to paint all of your cabinets a certain shade, you can bring in color in small ways for a big impact. a hint of hue on your backsplash or barstools can go a long way.

Looking around, I notice a theme of arches. They obviously influenced your design somewhat. I wanted to be true to the architecture of this 1934 Mediterranean home while also creating an elegant yet inviting and comfortable space. The arches definitely influenced the design, as you’ll see them in the windows, shelving and arms of the Lucite chairs, all reminiscent of the arches found so frequently throughout Mediterranean architecture. What elements lend to the room’s traveled and collected feel? This room is where I keep my collection of personal treasures, reminding me of special occasions and happy times traveling. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel widely to such foreign locations as China, India and Indonesia. I seem to have an affinity for the exotic and have brought home many interesting pieces. Growing up in Puerto Rico, the culture appreciates handmade, artisanal pieces, and I feel that my childhood is very much reflected here. What makes this a great space to curl up and relax? With the room facing Indian Creek, I come here every morning to have my café con leche as I listen to music by Andrea Bocelli or curl up on the Haitian cotton loveseat to delve into a good book. The most important aspect in making a sun porch the perfect spot is to surround yourself with the things you love and let the sun do the rest. This scenery lends itself to a very charming, southern feel. I drew great inspiration from the understated architecture of the American South. During the creative process, I researched ‘Old Florida’ vernacular architecture and gardens from the pioneer days of the early 1900s. This space speaks to that concept through the simple siting of the pool and the way the dark pool finish creates the illusion that it is an extension of the lake. The result of this project, to me, is like stepping back in time.

Did you have to consider any environmental aspects here? The house and garden are sited in the middle of a mature native live oak hammock ecosystem. We worked hard to maintain all of the existing trees and protect them during the duration of construction. Because we were not permitted to drain runoff water into the lake, we chose natural porous keystone materials for the hardscapes so that rainwater could infiltrate to the ground instead of running into the lake below.

What are your musts for any landscape project in Miami? My absolute must is to edit down the natural tendency to overdesign by implementing too many varied textures, colors and materials in one space. We have so many local materials to work with that one can be seduced into placing too many elements into a garden. I always simplify as a project moves from initial design to completion so that there is a feeling of effortlessness, elegance and a true local sense of place in my work.

How much did those ocean views inspire you? The soft spa-like tones of green and blue that accent the pristine interiors were taken directly from the ocean. The open kitchen paired with the low dining space offers unobstructed views of the water. Here you have the added bonus of the curtain wall providing interaction with the outdoors, as well. The colors and textures all speak to one another, providing a visual consistency to enjoy the space and the view.

You have a penchant for a white, minimalistic palette. Is there a science behind a white room? My design philosophy is elegant minimalism. My projects consistently feature a refined, edited color palette, clean modern lines and timeless design elements. In Miami, it’s very fitting and appropriate to design in predominantly white. You may think it’s easy to make an all-white space, but in contrast it’s actually very hard since every flaw shows. It requires a trained eye, as not all whites are the same.

Aside from the palette, what else in this space most reflects you? I really believe the kitchen should not be separated on it’s own, and the fluid continuity between the kitchen and dining area opening onto the spectacular ocean views is what I love the most here. I always think there should be a dynamic between the kitchen and the dining room; you don’t want the cook to be isolated from the rest of the group. I think you should see what’s going on in the kitchen and everyone should participate.

Where did the idea to create your all-weather pieces come from? my brother and business partner, aaron Jones, dreamed it up when he was doing a design/build project in a chilly backyard. our pieces give you the toasty feeling of being in a hot tub but without having to get wet.

How do you create your shapely silhouettes? We use the human form as our inspiration, with comfort being key. When your body anticipates that something will be comfortable, the piece becomes naturally inviting.

What are some of your favorite materials to work with? We’re very intrigued by the cast-able medium. it is amazing and versatile and allows us to explore more ergonomic and interesting forms.

We have always understood architecture as the utmost expression of design, and interior design as the element that brings the architect closer to the spaces conceived by him or her. What are the key influences in your work today? The search for light and the integration of nature by using natural materials. What do you regard as the greatest success in your career to date? Born in Brazil, the award-winning interior designer runs her eponymous, Miami-based firm, elaine Bettio Interiors, from multiple locations throughout the U.S., South america and europe. The various locales in which she works provide constant inspiration. “I have the opportunity to be inspired by the beauty of different cultures,” Bettio says. “architecture and design are a journey of discovery, as is traveling.” Since establishing her firm in 1995, Bettio has become recognized for interiors that reflect the lifestyle and character of their inhabitants. The designer’s client-centric process—in which she gains an intimate understanding of the individual and their needs— contributes to her acclaimed reputation. “My style is dictated by my clients,” she says. “It’s not about ‘me,’ it’s about ‘we.’ The client and I make a perfect team.” given her collaborative ethos, it is no surprise that when asked about her driving ambition, Bettio identifies exceeding expectations as her goal above all else. In achieving this objective, she combines a formal education with an everyday continuation of study. Having earned a Bachelor of Fine arts in architecture from PUC University in Brazil, Bettio now furthers her expertise through travel, books and nature. When creating an aesthetic, she incorporates both the personal preferences of the client and the elements necessary to a space that is high-end, functional and captures the aura of a home. “Well-being is promoted through a balance between sophistication, harmony and relaxation,” she explains. “The essence of a design is in the emotion that it conjures for the client. This makes it easier for us to communicate and offers new challenges with every project. How do you define luxury? Luxury design is an abstract concept, because the essence of what constitutes luxury is such a subjective and ultimately personal experience. How do you define a successful project? There is no preference, no best project. It doesn’t matter if it is 30,000 square feet or 2,000 square feet. The client’s satisfaction and happiness are what make a successful project. The final result has to exceed everyone’s expectations.

He asked me to create an art gallery in which he could live.

What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? What’s most important to you? It’s important that the project has strong legs. We want to create timeless interiors, which start with a great foundation.

ony and Alina Gonzalez met as teenagers at a tiki bar in the Florida Keys, where their families both owned vacation homes. As they grew together and married, the couple dreamed of one day building a house near the water that would speak to their love of boating and the adventures they would certainly share. During the next 20 years, the couple traveled the world— Europe, Asia, Africa—and garnered design ideas for their someday home along the way. So, when they ultimately purchased a waterfront lot in Miami, they had lots of images and ideas to show designer Michael Scigliano and architect and longtime friend Sergio R. Artigues, including 11 pages of sketches Tony had drawn up while on vacation. “The styles ranged from Mediterranean to Polynesian to contemporary,” says Artigues. “So we blended all of these styles into this residence, which gave them something very unique.” Because the Gonzalezes wanted the interior spaces to flow into one another, the entire first floor is nearly devoid of interior walls. “Everything needed to be open,” says Artigues, who collaborated with business partner Emilio Cubero. “You can see into the family room from the library, not through the home but rather through the glass sliding doors that connect these rooms to the terraces, which wrap around the first floor in the shape of an L and are an extension of the interior

spaces.” That seamless blending with the outdoors was important: “We had a little place in the Keys that we called the Love Shack,” Alina recalls. “It wasn’t super-fancy, but it was my husband’s decompression valve on the weekend. It had a kitchen outside and a big terrace, and we were always outside. We wanted that same feel in our new home.” Tony and Alina both come from large, tight-knit Cuban families who often drop by, as do their friends. So during parties—which range from intimate gatherings to 200 guests and a live band—the glass doors can be pulled wide open, and guests can circulate inside and out. “They have the expansive terrace up above, which is divided into two distinct areas. One has a big bar, and there’s a more private seating area near the library,” Artigues explains. “Both of those spaces taper down individual stairs to opposite sides of the pool deck, where you can again entertain two different groups. You can also walk across the pool on floating steps, and another bar awaits farther down below on the lawn.” The couple created vision boards for the interiors, as well, which Scigliano used to inspire his design plan: natural materials such as stone, glass mosaics, pebbles and woods that all followed a neutral palette. “I had a few quirky rules,” Tony says. “No gold fixtures. Nothing shiny. All the finishes would be brushed nickel, that kind of thing. I wanted everything to be earthy.” So Scigliano, with the

Custom-designed by Scigliano, the stairway comprises walnut treads and a cold-rolled steel frame with Starphire glass panels. The dining room beyond features oil paintings by the Greek artist Garsot. Scigliano also designed the dining room’s cold-rolled steel wall, fabricated by Toledo Iron Works, to conceal the powder room and pantry.

help of his colleague Andrea Valle, set out to enhance the home’s earthy tropical vibe, taking cues from the owners’ travels, as well. “They had vacationed in Bali and like to live an island lifestyle. We took the natural elements of that aesthetic and combined them with classic materials—the cold-rolled steel walls that conceal the pantry and powder room, for instance. They are a modern element, but the natural patina of the metal helps to keep the organic feel,” says Scigliano, who also designed the kitchen, bathrooms and millwork as part of his comprehensive interiors. For color, the couple’s art collection does the trick with pieces from South Africa and Prague, as well as paintings by the Greek artist Garsot, who has become a personal friend. The furnishings are minimal, which allows each piece to be truly seen and provides a sense of calm. Most were custom-designed by Scigliano, acquired through local showrooms or even handmade for them by artisans across the country, including the black walnut dining table from Jeffrey Greene Design Studio in Pennsylvania. “Ochre’s

Arctic Pear chandelier that hangs above complements the table nicely while also standing on its own design,” Scigliano says. The couple’s nine nephews and nieces can all bounce around on their expansive, heavy-duty sofa, which was designed by Scigliano and built by a friend. “It was important that our home felt like a place where people wouldn’t be scared to sit on the sofa because it’s too chichi,” Alina says. Among their many parties, Tony and Alina host a cook-off, so the kitchen is outfitted with top-notch appliances and has enough space for several people to cook at once. To choose the countertop material, Scigliano flew to New Orleans with Alina, and she fell in love with Cristallo quartzite slabs they found there. “You could see the light in the warehouse shining through it, and I said, ‘Wow, that’s gorgeous,’” she remembers. “So we put LEDs under the stone, and it’s so beautiful lit up.” Meanwhile, Tony spent more than a year-and-a-half designing the remote-controlled gas lanterns adorning the house with Solara Iron Doors & Lighting in Dallas. “They sent me prototypes, and I would change up details,” he says.

The library, which also functions as homeowner Alina Gonzalez’s office, is stylish and functional. The bookshelves, custom-designed by Scigliano and crafted by Artemisa Escobar Brothers, incorporate coldrolled steel brackets. The desk, also designed by Scigliano, was made by Sharron Lewis Design Central.

With a color scheme that is darker and sexier than the rest of the house, the library also includes a conversation area with modern leather chairs and the homeowners’ Noguchi coffee table that was passed down from Alina’s mother. An Ingo Maurer light fixture made of silver lacquered paper, from Luminaire, hangs above. The owners purchased the cowhide rug at The Grand Bazaar while on a trip to Istanbul. The room offers views of the terrace, pool and canal beyond.

“Then we decided to incorporate LEDs into them.” Solara named the fixture Maya—a nickname that the couple’s nephews and nieces use for Alina—and it’s become a top-selling lantern for the company. Now living in their dream house on the water, the couple say that it’s everything they imagined, including the neighborhood, where Alina grew up. Her parents live just a mile away, and Tony’s parents are five houses down. “In the morning, I’ll go out to the terrace outside of our bedroom and greet the day,” Alina says. “I have my cup of coffee and enjoy the beauty of nature. You can’t ask for a better way to wake up than that.” And Tony agrees. “Every day, I feel like I’ve come home to a dream,” he says. “This house was born from our imagination and hard work, and we waited for 20 years to do it. It’s now our little slice of heaven.”

The Balinese-esque guest bedroom features a carved teak headboard from VivaTerra. The decorative pillows and bedside table are more finds from India. The lamp, purchased in the Florida Keys, boasts a weathered coral stone base that lends an organic touch.

have always been infatuated with the strength and appearance of raw, unfinished concrete,” says Troy Simmons, a Miami-based artist whose star is quickly rising for his large-scale concrete canvases. To most, concrete is simply the stuff of historical monuments and urban jungles, but for Simmons, it’s the foundation of his modernist compositions, rendered from a disparate mix of acrylic paints and industrial materials. “I love the combination of rough and smooth, of old and new; even my studio is in a refurbished bakery from the 1950s,” says Simmons of his affinity for natural contrasts. Tucked inside the creative incubator known as The Bakehouse Art Complex, Simmons’ studio is strewn with chisels, upholstery tools, auto paint, acrylics, resin and aluminum, poised to construct one of his massive 300-pound works. “I enjoy experimenting with different materials, stretching the limits of its intended use,” he says. Though his artistic tools are usually relegated to construction zones, to hear Simmons wax poetic about architecture is to understand his inspiration: “I remember being captivated by Rainer Disse’s Feldberg Church while exploring southern Germany,” he says of his first experience with Brutalist architecture, a vernacular named for its raw aesthetic. “I was amazed by the large, repetitive geometric shapes created entirely with board-formed concrete. Though the rigidness of the man-made structure contradicted the natural

backdrop of the Black Forest, the juxtaposition seemed harmonious to me.” It is this fascination with the relationship between unrestrained nature and urbanism that keeps Simmons up at night, literally: Darkness has fallen and the electronic trill of Pantha du Prince rises to the rafters before Simmons settles into his work rhythm. “Midnight is when I’m at my most creative; it’s peaceful for me,” he says. “I construct the frame and lay the cement, then begin the process of deconstruction.” His latest home installation, a 10-foot-wide work featuring sleek strokes of saturated color, required a hydraulic lift and pure man power to hang in a house’s second story. But, “before physically starting a piece, I create sketches and three-dimensional renderings,” Simmons says of a process that speaks to his architectural roots. The Houston-bred artist, who shows at JanKossen Contemporary Art Gallery in New York and will unveil new works at Contemporary Istanbul in November, began his career as an environmental lab technician and earned an architectural degree before opportunity steered him back to his early artistic passions. “When I lived in Texas, environmental issues such as reforestation and water pollution were headline topics there. Through being exposed to these issues, my work took on a strong manversus-nature theme,” Simmons notes. “My latest work reflects the diversity felt in the tapestry of South Florida. Layers of ideas, people, and cultures all mixed into one urban environment.”

ometimes what seems a minor detour in the day’s plans becomes a life-changing event. This was certainly the case when Steven Newman was on his way to the mall one afternoon with his sister and decided to look at an available property instead. Within minutes of seeing the lakefront site in Delray Beach, he was calling his partner, Steve Johnson, to fly in from New York for a look. They bought the land without hesitation, and before long their vacation retreat was set into the landscape. The original plan was to build a Mediterranean-style house inside and out, much like the owners’ vacation home they would leave behind in Boca Raton. But their interior designer, Susan Lachance, had another idea: The house would be Mediterranean on the outside, yes, but in striking contrast, clean and contemporary for the interiors. It was a concept that didn’t take much of a leap of faith for the couple. “We love the juxtaposition,” Steven says. “It reminds us of our trips to Italy, where we saw homes that were hundreds of years old but then the insides were totally modernized.” luxe interiors + design / 281

The couple’s design team, which also included architect Stuart Brenner, builder Aldo J. Kosuch and landscape architect Krent Wieland, went to work for 18 months to begin bringing the concept to life. “We were going to build this residence similar to their previous home, but they decided to make changes in the style, and everything became grander in scale,” says Kosuch, who worked with superintendent Robert “Bud” Monz on the build. Brenner, who joined Lachance in designing the couple’s previous retreat, concurs. “Some of the architectural elements of the Boca Raton home were integrated here, but the scale and volume changed. We took this to another level,” he says, noting that though the larger space works well for entertaining and having houseguests, the challenge was also to create space that was comfortable and cozy when the couple is there alone. Once the refreshed architecture was in place, Lachance then put a twist on the Mediterranean design components of traditional arched halls, stone surfaces and high-ceilinged

rooms. “I wanted to give them a metropolitan look, combining the light-colored traditional architectural envelope with clean, contemporary furnishings,” says the designer, who incorporated classic finishes and materials like wood and marble in refreshing ways. To this end, in the two-story living room, with its spectacular view of the infinity pool that seems to flow right into the lake, Lachance specified a massive paneled wall to bring the vertical space onto one elevation, employing wenge wood, stainless-steel bands and porcelain tile to house a linear fireplace that adds warmth to the voluminous room and reduces the vertical pull. The rich wood contrasting with the cream porcelain ties the space back to the wood-and-marble flooring in the nearby entry and hallway. “This gives balance to my concept of having a common thread throughout my work,” Lachance says. “I always bring you back to the same material or motif. I believe you need to reinforce design to have good design.”

Instead of the expected stucco-and-dark-wood interior, Lachance created a bright, airy scheme using brusheddriftwood flooring for a less formal effect and white as her primary color. The neutral palette of light walls and furnishings allows the architectural details and dreamy garden and water views to take center stage, with the archways and expansive windows helping frame the outdoor scene. Conversational areas feature sculpted sofas and club chairs covered in warm white and taupe that enable the pieces to sit quietly in their respective rooms. The near-monochromatic theme throughout the home reflects the couple’s preference—seen in the living room, the nearby breakfast room, and the kitchen and adjacent family room, which overlooks a loggia and promotes indoor-outdoor living through its doors that slide open 290 / luxe interiors + design

completely and disappear. The exceptions to the rule are the gradating shades of blue in the dining room and master suite. “We are color averse—we love things that are neutral. When Susan said we needed to put in some color, well, we put one red book in the family room,” Steven muses. For the outside landscape plan, the couple wanted to replicate elements of the Chianti countryside as a nod to their beloved travels in Italy. Set on 3 acres, the property was primed for Wieland and project manager Aaron Mastin to create such an aesthetic through plantings and water features. “When we were discussing likes and dislikes with Krent, we all decided to make the garden like a villa in Italy with the reflecting pools and fountains,” Steven recalls. “The back of the house has a sitting garden and other rest areas that take in views of the water or the entire length of the property.” In contrast, the front of the home was designed with privacy in mind. “The plantings here were given a more peekaboo treatment,” Wieland says. “It creates a little mystique.” Ultimately, the design achieved everything the owners wanted—a tranquil yet fashionable escape from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives in Manhattan. “The views are amazing,” Steven says. “They’re relaxing and comforting. Whenever we come here, we just hate to leave.”

rue artists can be known simply by experiencing their work: one look at their pieces and immediately you have a window into their soul. Such is the case with Jenny Kiker, who pours herself into her creations using walls as her canvas. Living Pattern, her bespoke line of wallpapers and textiles, comprises mini reflections of her that are at once fresh, modern and organic. Her prints are a menagerie of lush flora and fauna that bring the outside in, with muses ranging from maidenhair ferns to the small detail of a beetle’s back. “I was looking through the book Pheromone: The Insect Artwork of Christopher Marley and immediately fell in love with this gorgeous Goliath beetle’s shell markings and knew I had to make it into a paper. It’s a new take on a cheetah print,” says Kiker, who works with her partner in business and in life, Chris Johnston. Kiker’s by-hand approach to making pattern is what sets her apart, drawing and developing her motifs in her studio before they are printed in Chicago. Though she uses traditional techniques, she does so with a clean, contemporary lean that speaks to her love of Australian design. “It’s bright with hints of modern but still organic,” she notes of the region’s aesthetic. “Australian designers are the world’s trendsetters to me. I love how they take black and white and add saturated pops of color.” When the artist isn’t busy brushing her next stroke or inking her custom stamps, she can easily be spotted driving around town in Little Donkey, her 1990 ecruhued Ford Ranger, foraging for new inspirations to bring back to her studio. Perched above the Brass Scale Antiques shop in West Palm Beach, her work space is brimming with nods to Mother Nature. “I’m a plant hoarder,” she says. “My studio is basically a greenhouse. If I’m not sketching, I usually have a plant mister in my hand. I’ve always looked to nature to spark my imagination.” luxe interiors + design / 295

SPIRIT an authentic renovation on miami’s venetian islands stays true to the home’s origins but takes a refreshing, fashionable approach. written by linda hayes / photography by mark roskams

rchitect and builder Zeb Jarosz uses the term sotto voce—an Italian opera term meaning soft voice—to describe his approach to preserving the integrity of a 1920s Mediterranean Revivalstyle home on Miami Beach’s Venetian Islands. “I believe in understated simplicity,” he explains. “As with anything in life, if you have an important message to convey, you should speak softly.” Before the owners—a family with three small children— purchased the residence, the house had already undergone an interior renovation. But it didn’t meet their needs or suit their lifestyle. “The house had very closed-up rooms, so it was not fully used, and the colors were a mix of dark blues, reds and yellows,” says the wife. “We entertain a lot and have lots of family and visitors around throughout the year. We wanted there to be a calmer, more open feel and flow, and for the house to be more livable.” As the goal of the project began to grow far beyond a simple redo of the second floor into a more comprehensive renovation and addition, preserving the main structure took on greater significance. “The house was one of the first of the Venetian Islands homes and it emulated the original style of development that was popular in Miami Beach in the 1920s. It was important that we be respectful of the original details,” Jarosz recalls of the renovation—a collaborative effort with designers Robert S. Brown and Todd D. Davis, who were involved with the overall aesthetic and vision for the home. Jarosz’s experience with historical preservation, which began after he studied architecture in Krakow, Poland, prepared him for the task. “I have a true appreciation for architecture of the past and all its underlying purpose, symbolic elements and technique of construction,” he notes. “In my work I try to translate that past into contemporary reality but still preserve its essence of proportion and scale. Otherwise, it just becomes a caricature.” The first step was to obtain historical designation, which allowed for more flexibility to preserve various elements of the house and conduct work that ordinarily wouldn’t be allowed under the current code. Structurally, that work involved

everything from correcting age-related structural problems to installing new plumbing and electrical components. Aesthetically, it meant a sensitive refreshment of the exterior features and finishes. “We remained essentially true to the original design by replicating the traditional rough texture of the stucco and the handmade clay barrel tiles on the roof,” Jarosz says. The addition of custom-crafted windows and doors, many of which are gracefully arched, adds to the period effect while being able to withstand hurricane winds. As the interior space was reconfigured, Brown and Davis specified interior architectural details such as the reclaimed Antique Dalle de Bourgogne French limestone flooring for the home’s first level and the custom-colored flooring in the newly added guesthouse, and they oversaw the material selections for the kitchen and bathrooms. Select furnishings—such as their custom cream sofas in the living room, and the sleek wood table and sculptural chandelier that they helped the owners procure for the dining room—began to set the tone for the interiors’ aesthetic and complement the architecture. Subsequently, Michael Dawkins was brought in to round out the interior design program, adding contrast to—yet further complementing—the architecture. “The design team had established a beautiful structure,” says Dawkins. “The house was historic, but the owners were a hip couple. We wanted to infuse a bit of modernism and make it work as a comprehensive whole.” Room by room, a mood was established. “We considered the indoor-outdoor Florida lifestyle, as well as the need to make things kid-friendly yet elegant,” says Dawkins. “The architecture is so prominent that we wanted to keep the rest as supporting characters.” S-shaped midcentury modern chairs, for instance, lend that mix of fun and sophistication to the dining room—“They add a sense of rhythm and playfulness to the room,” notes Dawkins—as does the grouping of tufted and shag ottomans in the lounge. Throughout, a significant collection of artwork punctuates the transitional nature of the home. Outdoor living was, of course, a major focus, as well. The architect, along with Brown and Davis early on, spruced up existing gardens, giving them a more formal European feel with box hedges and manicured lawns. At the rear, Jarosz designed that new guest pavilion at the far end of the existing swimming pool; it emulates the architecture of the house but is more modern. “Because of space constraints, the pavilion hangs over the pool and has a grotto effect,” says Jarosz. “You can swim underneath the overhang.” In the end, the home’s restoration did more than give new life to an important structure; it brought a sense of peace and calm to a growing family with an active lifestyle. “The entire house gets used all the time now, and I do like the juxtaposition of the more transitional interiors,” says the wife. With the house nodding to the past as it celebrates modern-day design, the architect shares the owners’ excitement. Says Jarosz: “We remained relatively true to the original design and updated only certain elements of the exterior but became more free with the interior layouts and details, interior decor and landscaping. It’s the poster child for restored homes in Miami Beach.”
