business of fueling the creative dreams of homeowners, yet it is no simple task, as each project has to resonate with the client and connect with its sense of place. In this annual Gold List issue, we once again celebrate the ideas and visions behind today’s industry tastemakers. While there’s no question that sceneries and lifestyles across the country are diverse, these passionate champions distill it down and share a common thread: imagining and designing homes that ring personal and true. Practical matters, of course, also factor in: When asked what every home needs, designer Thom Filicia answered, “a soul, a point of view, and a spot to make a really great cocktail!”

For Madeline Weinrib, who debuts her Kuba collection this winter, the trail she has blazed is covered with gorgeous hand-woven flat-weaves in a myriad of hues indicative of her signature style. Take a peek into the dynamic realm of this globetrotting textile maven. written and produced by cara gibbs photography by lesley unruh
R
egardless of their creative persuasion there is something that all artists have in common: we all have a voice,” muses rug and textile designer Madeline Weinrib, who began her illustrious career not by practicing her whipstitch or learning to
loom, but rather as a painter. Unsure of exactly how to translate her ideas from canvas to housewares, Weinrib proceeded with caution, initially hesitant to delve into a then male-dominated rug industry. She ultimately took a leap of faith after recognizing that there was great potential, and soon began to flex her artistry while putting her passport to good use, making frequent trips to Turkey, Morocco, Nepal, and India to garner inspiration and cultivate relationships with other craftsmen. “Artisans are masters at what they do,” says Weinrib. “They’ve worked extremely hard to develop their talents.” The many influences and takeaways collected along her journeys find a home inside Weinrib’s Manhattan showroom, an artful space that reflects more than the designer’s aesthetic. “My studio is an extension of my home,” she says. “Everything is chosen with pure love.” From custom floorcoverings and sumptuous fabrics to exquisite furnishings and modern accessories, each offering is designed to inspire clients, honor the bespoke, and spotlight philanthropic endeavors—such as Weinrib’s ambassadorship for Project Mala, an initiative that aims to build schools and provide opportunity in India’s rugproducing region. It is all a part of Weinrib’s greater objective: To have her artistic vision and unmistakable style tightly woven into everything she touches. Says the designer, “It is imperative that whatever I create feels like it is part of my body of work, and that it reflects my point of view—my visual voice.”
Weinrib will be opening two outposts abroad: one in Luke Irwin’s ultrachic London showroom and the other in Mumbai at Bungalow 8. The designer’s enigmatic prints find a home on a Paul McCobb bench, below in Remy, and on the famed silhouettes of three Manolo Blahnik pumps, center. e’ve created a collection that inspires spaces evocative of an evolved lifestyle: relaxed, elegant, well-traveled, and
thoughtfully composed,” describes designer Laura Kirar of her most recent partnership with Baker. The steadfast furnishings brand is placing Kirar in the driver’s seat for the third time, and in this latest collaboration, she gives us a peek into her personal travels and the art of collecting. Reflecting architectural elements from around the world— such as the lyrical curves of Moorish archways seen in her Arabesque bed—the collection carries an unexpected mix of forms shaped by timeless silhouettes. Each piece speaks of luxury while maintaining a strong raw aesthetic that is often found in Kirar’s creations. “I am thoroughly inspired by historical details and proportions,” explains the designer. “When I spot something ‘perfect’ on my travels I photograph or sketch it, and it lives in my inspiration library.” Citing such influences as Spanish Colonial doors with hammered nailheads and exotic cabinetry from Portugal, Kirar integrates decorative wood finishes with primitive-inspired metalwork. Pieces, like the of attention—from conception, to prototyping, to completion. “Every experience I have—reading, traveling, studying, people I’ve met—is really informative and allows me to constantly change and grow,” says the designer. “Life is what teaches me.”

uch can change over a dozen decades. In fact, most things do: technologies progress; mindsets evolve; styles come, go and come back again. But for textile house Schumacher, who celebrates 125 years in business, one thing has remained pre-
served—authenticity. Founded in the late 1800s by Parisian Frederic Schumacher, the brand remains faithful to the integrity of its patterns’ origins. Take Shengyou Toile, for instance; its charming design still leans on hand-drawn and -engraved techniques today as much as it did in the 18th century, lending exquisite detail.
What has evolved, though, is its pedigree. Collections include those penned by design greats as far back as Dorothy Draper to as recent as Timothy Corrigan. And it has left its own fingerprints throughout the pages of American history in the worlds of politics, cinema and television: During the Kennedy administration, the White House’s Blue Room walls were lined in a Lampas silk, while the silver screen showcased Hydrangea Drape in Gone With the Wind. To celebrate the last 125 years, Schumacher has carefully combed its vast archives to reintroduce 17 old favorites for a new generation. We sat down with Creative Director Dara Caponigro to give us some insight into the storied company and its commemorative collection. WHAT HAS GIVEN SCHUMACHER ITS LASTING POWER? We’ve always

It reflects the breadth of the Schumacher legacy, our passion for luxury and our history of designer collections. IS THERE A PERSONAL FAVORITE?
I love so many of them for different reasons. Our Serengeti pattern speaks to today’s world. It’s ultraluxurious but also soft and warm. You just want to put your face against it! I also love Citrus Garden; it’s modern yet charming, and so sweet.
WHAT MAKES THESE PATTERNS SO TIMELESS? Good design is good
design; it’ll last forever. Take our Indian Arbre print. The tree of life motif dates back to the 17th century, but people still love it. It’s about understanding your past in order to create something modern. WHAT’S ON TAP FOR THE FUTURE?
We’re looking to focus and expand on the Schumacher brand, and introduce new furniture and products. We recently debuted two wallcovering collections; I think Fabulous Faux is pretty rock and roll. There are a lot of exciting things to come.

f you look closely at an antique find, you can see its age spots and laugh lines. And if you listen carefully, you can hear its story. Lighting master David Littman considers this a fascinating phenomenon, and he hopes the time-honored
yet forward-thinking fixtures by Hudson Valley Lighting, Corbett Lighting and Troy Lighting conjure the same sense of curiosity and admiration. Marrying traditional artistry with an innovative, modern approach, the pendants, chandeliers and sconces produced by the lighting trio indeed captivate. With design and manufacturing facilities in New York and California, as well as abroad, the brands engage specialty craftsmen who practice age-old techniques—think handblown glass and lost-wax casting—while employing advanced technologies. Hand finishers apply gold and silver leaf; lavish silks join Japanese papers; and polished crystal juxtaposes organic materials like bamboo and handwoven abaca. And the teams put as much care into creating experiences as they do producing the fixture itself—the shadow the light will cast, the ambience it will create in a room. This year, Hudson Valley continues to bring an updated twist to classic designs, mixing metal, acrylic and tungsten filament bulbs for its lantern-like Andover pendants. Troy takes its sophisticated-casual collection to new depths with Dine N Dash: rustic-pop art fixtures whose embossed and plasma-cut words nod to culinary persuasions. And Corbett makes its fashion-minded Rockstar lights runway-ready with jewelry-inspired agate. Less is more. Modern designs offer simplicity. The unique silhouette of the PO-801 armchair is quiet, warm and sexy. We see it used as a pair or standing alone in a living room or bedroom. Objects20c’s clients appreciate and invest in good design, quality materials and craftsmanship. They would love this chair. In with the old: Furniture and decorative arts are a reflection of the past—the culture, the materials and the technology of the time. In our opinion, it grounds us. We always agree that our clients know what is best for their lifestyle. Style vs. comfort: Wade is sometimes willing to accept a little less comfort for something that looks off-the-charts fabulous. David Taylor’s work is strong and rugged, but somehow still very pretty. There is a brutalist quality to his pieces. The Slag Series is sculptural, intriguing and daring. Opposites attract. Using a raw material like slag with refined polished metal makes the objects “naturally” less formal and intimidating. Taylor says, “Beauty needs corruption.” We agree! The tension created by variety is dynamic and interesting. Lighten up. Something that doesn’t seem too precious works with both the collective conscious and the enjoyment of acquiring a piece. Natural materials that stand the test of time are always a good investment. What is luxury? Quality and uniqueness: paying attention to methods of fabrication and design philosophies. The devil’s in the details. We tend to diverge on the details—size of an area rug, window treatment style; we’ve learned to give and take, and trust our instincts (even if we have to defend them!). Anything new? We are working on a book to be released in fall 2015. It’s a real privilege to reflect on what we do and why we do it.

Brian Gennett is creating something artful that is also completely useful. In 3 words, these trays are: Cubist, primary and graphic. One-of-a-kind: In a world of big-box stores, it’s refreshing to find something handmade, especially using vintage materials. Gennett is based in L.A., and the graphic movement of color in these trays feels specific to our stomping grounds. The Fishscale, Angles and Herringbone trays remind us of Italian marble stationery. Back to the books: The bold geometric patterns crafted by the vintage book covers would be an asset to a color story and an impactful addition to any space. Let it go. Today we are all overexposed to what other artists are doing. It is important to not take it all so seriously—let your creativity unfold without restraint. Todd tends to be a less-is-more guy. Amy takes more risks when it comes to color. What’s next for Nickey Kehoe? A new chapter in our furniture collection.

We are big fans of Hubbardton Forge. In fact, we used some of their pieces in a private hunting lodge in Wisconsin. Made in America: It’s becoming increasingly rare to find things manufactured domestically, which makes it all the more special when we can source through artisans keeping craft alive in the U.S. As designers we are drawn to the Balance LED Task Lamp’s architecture and scale. It’s all about material. Aged bronze always gives a warm feel and the blend of the two-toned finish adds a dynamic, exciting quality to the piece. It’s reminiscent of a Mies van der Rohe building: balanced, architectural and severe. We love bronze; polished nickel, too. Both are malleable from a fabrication standpoint and can be made in a wide range of color values. We see the Balance lamp on a front entry hall table as a sculptural element. We can always agree on our starting point: finding out how a client wants to live and then deliver. Any news? We are excited about the continued expansion of our SHIIR rug division; we just opened our ninth showroom.

Our first impression of KGBL: Their work is academic, clean and tailored. The Overlin console is quite elegant yet raw. The softness of the marble combined with the strength of the bronze frame is both dramatic and complementary; both materials are substantial and beautiful in their own right. The clean lines of this piece enhance the form on an architectural level. How would you accessorize the console? With a simple composition of books, a Le Labo candle and a petite bouquet of flowers. We believe good design is always tasteful, timeless and noteworthy. When shopping for a client we lean towards rich tones versus lighter colors. Sturdy and durable materials such as stone and bronze, like in the Overlin console, are a definite go-to. Back in time: This piece belongs in the Bauhaus era. What’s keeping you busy these days? We are working on a grand dame of a structure from a 1940s, old Hollywood style and the client is a wonderful collector of modern art; the juxtaposition is quite inspiring.

Hella Jongerius thoughtfully created a collection inspired by nature. Eden and Foliage balance positive and negative space and play with scale. The positioning of the foliage is elegant without being too highly structured. In perfect harmony: The spacing of the foliage is harmoniously polar, almost melodic. You can see movement in the print through the placement of the leaves. At first glance we are inspired by the application of a classic theme to create a modern aesthetic. The use of color blocking and shape gives Eden and Foliage a compelling industrial feel. As in our Spring 2015 RTW collection, this collaboration has a careful and precise utilization of space. Think big. We prefer large-scale patterns and refining the play on big and small shapes to create visually appealing pieces. Go-to inspiration: We have always observed through an anthropological lens the way today’s woman dresses, as well as lives. We never disagree on what is relevant and fresh on the market.

techniques,” he says. “By thoroughly studying a 200-year-old painting, I can interpret how it fits into today.” The result is a vibrant piece of art that simultaneously excites with its newness and comforts with its familiarity. This approach to art is perhaps what landed a commission to create a 25-by-10-foot mural for the lobby of the Freedom Tower: The collage-like piece will fashion an American flag created with materials from every state, such as steel from Chicago and sand from the Florida coast. One of the most poignant aspects of this piece is the 50 mirror-like stars that will reflect its voyeurs. “Everyone who stands before this mural is a part of it,” adds Zapata. “We are all united in respect of the tragedy that happened here, but we are also embracing the future.” dzapata.com; 310.745.0989

“Clé is the culmination of every one of my life experiences and of the things that motivate me,” says Sausalito-based Deborah Osburn of the tile company she founded. Opposite: Osburn finds inspiration in Ilse Crawford’s interiors, especially Matbaren at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm.
Deborah Osburn is a visionary. The Sausalito, California-based founder and creative director of Clé, an online marketplace for tile, began introducing her fashion-forward approach to tile design 25 years ago. “I entered the tile fray wearing Yohji Yamamoto and Vivienne Westwood,” she says of a time when white and almond were the tile palettes de rigueur, “and I just wanted to make fun tile.” A sculptor by training, Osburn came into the market with a deep

appreciation for surfaces, forms and production. “To become a tile maker one must first really love the act of making tiles,” says Osburn. Her passion for the process combined with an acute understanding of modern tastes leads to her fresh and innovative designs, as evidenced by her recent collection of ombré-stained, unglazed porcelain: Watermark. In addition to her own designs, Osburn sells tiles developed with other artists—including Ruan Hoffmann and Forrest Lesch-Middelton—through Clé, which was inspired by Osburn’s blog, Tile Envy. “My work and my discovery of artists come from constantly devouring the visual,” she says. cletile.com; 415.887.9011

What’s your philosophy when it comes to kitchen design? It’s all about comfort for me. A kitchen should feel like a living room with furniture and décor. If you can find one great piece, make it a dresser or armoire and keep all your plates, glasses and linens in there. It mixes things up and keeps your counters clear. This room is so full of character. Nothing is too stiff. I like to make people smile by using quirky things like art with funny sayings, antique pieces and pottery made by local artisans. Art isn’t something you see too often in the kitchen. Art finishes off a space. I have a Damien Hirst in my Santa Monica kitchen; it’s really cheerful. Your best piece doesn’t have to be in the drawing room. What other touches are key to a cozy kitchen? Textiles. Use fabrics or an old quilt thrown over the table. A tablecloth can totally change the mood of a room. Let’s pretend you’re hosting a dinner party. Who’s there and what are you serving? Arianna Huffington, movie producer Art Linson, John Edelman from Design Within Reach, and designers Windsor Smith and Martyn Lawrence Bullard: People who enjoy eating and have a lot to say. And I’d make a simple salmon with warm potato salad and asparagus. Oh, and a wonderful ice cream. And you’re cooking all of this on your AGA stove, of course? I’m a lifelong fan of AGA, and I also represent them in the U.S. I learned to cook on one, as did my boys; it’s a staple in an English kitchen. Radiant heat is really the best way to cook. How do you keep all these elements laid-back yet luxurious? Luxury is in the layering of the art, rugs, fabrics, furniture…you have to treat it all equally. When all those pieces live harmoniously, that’s where the magic is. Go outside of your comfort zone. There’s nothing worse than a boring house; it’s worse than a boring person!

This bathroom belongs to supermodel Carolyn Murphy. Tell me how the space came together. The house had such great bones, and the previous owners did an amazing job at selecting many of the finishes you see here. All the materials feel like they had a former life. I helped her pull it together. It’s very human and cozy; you just connect with it on an innate level. Carolyn herself is a wanderer, and this space fits that spirit. It’s so perfectly imperfect. That’s what I love about it. It has a patina. The floors are reclaimed, the sink unit has a distressed chalky gray-green finish. Nothing is too sterile. I don’t mind leather that’s scratched or metal that is tarnished. I actually prefer those imperfections. It’s easier to relax in a room that is slightly flawed. That large art piece just draws you in. That is something Carolyn previously owned. The tea-stained background worked so well with the marble and stone throughout. There are also prints on the other side of the tub that are framed with deep-toned mats. They play into the vintage vibe, as do the wild harvested flowers. I love how dramatic they are; it’s opulent yet relaxed. Does that speak to your overall design aesthetic? I have bohemian tendencies, and like layering pieces of more humble origins with those of a fancier pedigree. I love finding unusual things in unusual places. Any recent anecdotes? I found a 22-foot-tall totem pole in Idaho. There was no paint on it, just this beautiful carving. I used it for a lake house in the Sierra Nevadas. When I saw it, I knew it was perfect. Besides a giant totem, what one element ties together a room? That’s tough. I love rugs, though, whether antique or something I find at the flea market; they round out a space. Set the mood: how do you relax? Diptyque has the most unique scents. I’m drawn to their lotions and, of course, their candles. They transport you.

he most courageous act is still to think for yourself—aloud,” said the indomitable Coco Chanel. By that standard, the home of designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey in Alexandria, Virginia, which she shares with her husband and two children,
expresses her particular character in a booming timbre. And that’s the point. “The space is experiential,” says Cavin-Winfrey. “You come in and immediately get a sense of who we are. It’s about our collections, the raw materials that indicate we’re not from an urban area, and things that are both old and new.” To say the interiors are idiosyncratic is to put it mildly. Cavin-Winfrey was born, she says, to “hippie parents” in Roswell, New Mexico, (to which she attributes the uniqueness of her name) and raised in Midland, Texas. When her husband’s job brought them to the D.C. area, they purchased a 1956 rambler that had suffered many additions. They didn’t like the layout or the kit greenhouse that jutted out from the façade, but the abundance of fenestration—there were 11 skylights throughout— ensured plenty of natural light, something every Southwest girl craves.

The family room of this home by designer— and owner—Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey features sofas upholstered in Robert Allen fabric with Samuel & Sons trim. A rope-wrapped Currey & Company chandelier echoes the natural texture of the Stark carpet; a Henredon hutch seamlessly blends into the subtle color scheme of the space.
Artist Santiago Pérez’s The Ship of Fools: The Hunt for the Space Whale, acquired through Nüart Gallery in Santa Fe, adds color and whimsy to the mostly creamhued room. Taking pride of place in the same vignette is the lion head-accented Leone console by David Iatesta.
Off the entry, Baxter counter stools by Furniture Classics surround a custom table in a casual study. Bookshelves were built into the structure of the home and highlight Cavin-Winfrey’s many unique finds and quirky trinkets. Circa Lighting pendants overhead allow for reading after dark.
Upon entering, the family (and guests) are greeted by an antique rocking horse—a gift from Cavin-Winfrey’s grandmother—covered in Phillip Jeffries’ Rings wallpaper. As a dramatic foil, the designer chose the same textile in an inverted colorway for the adjacent wall. A framed antique quilt amps up the character of the space. c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 148
After a few initial cosmetic changes to make it livable, the couple decided on a complete overhaul. For that, they engaged architect Christine A. Kelly and general contractor Greg Butenhoff of Butenhoff Construction. “Shazalynn described her vision for the exterior as having a wine country aesthetic,” Kelly says. “Portions of the existing house were stucco, which she liked and wanted to integrate throughout the entire exterior finish. We also designed parapet walls around the perimeter of the house and selected wood windows with an exterior black aluminum cladding to create the aesthetic she was looking for.” Kelly also gave the home low-sloping and flat roofs, while the landscape emphasizes the cleaner Postmodernist profile with topiary-like clipped hedges and tidy flagstone paths. Inside, Kelly says, “We maintained all of the existing skylights and opened up the floor plan to create better flow and help the light stream throughout.” luxe interiors

Not surprisingly, the interiors are as distinctive as Cavin-Winfrey’s first name. A portrait of her with her children—by Santa Fe-based artist Erin Cone—in the entry sets the tone; mom is cropped out of the frame above the abdomen. “The place is filled with crazy stuff,” she admits rather happily: colorfully whimsical artwork; framed textiles from around the world; a tray of tortoiseshells and a handmade angel doll in the living room; an antique rocking horse covered in Phillip Jeffries wallpaper boasting the reverse colors of the same paper that covers the wall against which it sits; animal head masks in her son’s room that double as hat hooks; and an array of antique Staffordshire dogs in the master bedroom. Cavin-Winfrey the minimalist? Perish the thought. “The house is not huge,” the designer explains. “So it was important to create a cohesive color scheme with textures and subtle neutral patterns.” 152 l u x e i n t e r i o r s

Nubby textures and more unexpected décor are at home in the living room, where matching L-shaped custom sofas by Cavin-Winfrey don Groundworks’ Kumano Weave fabric in beige and Samuel & Sons trim. A peek into the study reveals a menagerie of miniature figures on the shared bookshelves.
Showcasing layered mirrors and collected goods, this antique chest of drawers was found by the designer at Karla Katz Antiques on a trip to New Orleans. Christine Round Tall side tables by Oly Studio offer a required touch of black to this room to mix up the neutral palette.

The dining room offers a multitude of seating options with Oly Studio armchairs in a Jerry Pair leather and a custom wall-to-wall banquette in Groundworks’ Ombre Maze in lilac. The steel-andantique-mirror tables are from SCW Interiors’ private label, and the recycled-glass chandelier is by Ro Sham Beaux in Charleston, South Carolina.

Designed by SCW Interiors, the backyard is a streamlined respite from the layered interiors. Outdoor furniture from Restoration Hardware and a round sculpture from Made Goods sit at the base of the straight-edged pool by Lewis Aquatech.

The resulting creams and beiges, along with a bleached floor that “plays up the light,” allow the family’s eclectic possessions to become the focus. Because the open plan achieved Cavin-Winfrey’s desire to have “spaces fall one into the other,” the subdued palette also sidesteps a feeling of disjunction between rooms. Touches of black in every room, she says, “help ground things so it’s not all an ambiguous tone-on-tone environment.” Furnishings are “fresh, natural and unforced,” making even the living room invitingly comfortable and intimate. And an abundance of texture—a rope-wrapped chandelier and linen curtains in the family room, slate floors and wicker stools in the study, nailhead-trimmed pieces in many spaces—impart an alluring tactility. All of these conspire to create a mise-en-scène that could belong only to this family. And though the softness of palette and abundant upholstered comfort whispers rather than bellows, in almost every other aspect, these interiors speak with a confident, full-throated and singular voice. n the 1957 Audrey Hepburn movie musical Funny Face, an eccentric fashion editor, brought to life by the inimitable Kay Thompson, admonished her staff to “Think pink! Everything that you can think, and that includes the kitchen sink.” But this is not a color
met with abandon by most designers, especially when the shade in question is a particularly bright shade of fuchsia. Nevertheless, that was the color requested by designer Ernest de la Torre’s client, a mother and grandmother in her 70s who had been living at The Plaza Hotel for three years and wanted to move to SoHo to be closer to her son and grandchildren. “I was only going to put pink on the sofas,” de la Torre recalls, “but she wanted the color everywhere. She said it made her happy.” Rather than resist, de la Torre embraced it. “Why not,” he adds. “I’d never done an all-pink apartment before.”

Recognizing that the palette could quickly become overwhelming, de la Torre gave it a more balanced context by mixing in “elements of subdued fantasy and rawness.” In this case, fantasy skewed toward nature-inspired elements taken from Asian and Indian cultures, where, says de la Torre, “pink is pervasive.” Rawness refers to the industrial origins of the building, originally designed by Cleverdon and Putzel in 1895. Not conceived for residential use, it had begun life as an apparel and hat manufactory and, prior to its 1990s apartment conversion, had housed offices. Because of this, the space lacked the symmetry that is essential to classical proportion and grace, which impart livability to so many homes. With that in mind, the design team had to build the symmetry in. Builders Steven Scordio and Anthony Scordio were charged with executing that symmetry within the existing plan. They did so by mirroring the centruy-old architectural elements. For example, sleeping 164 l u x e i n t e r i o r s

De la Torre softened the existing stainless-steel kitchen with organic elements such as the trio of custom pendants covered in a deep beige Clarence House horsehair and 1970s teak barstools from Drake. New lacquered-wood cabinetry by Scordio Construction updates the space, giving it a more crisp, streamlined feel.
Grounding the casual breakfast nook just off the sitting area is a vintage horn-inlay Karl Springer game table surrounded by four custom cerused-oak chairs covered in a pink floral embroidered silk by Manuel Canovas. An 18th-century embroidered Chinese panel hangs on the wall.

In the boys’ room, custom steel windows from A&S Window Associates hide a closet and bath. Below the round vintage Ralph Lauren mirror, Anthony Lawrence-Belfair fabricated the custom trundle daybeds in a durable Stark vinyl, accessorized with John Robshaw pillows. quarters for the grandchildren featured a wall flanked by openings at both sides that infelicitously looked into a closet and bathroom. “I suggested surrounding it with a steel-and-glass wall,” says de la Torre of this raw, industrial part of the space. The move closed off those spaces while providing access to the door on one side. The opposite side emulates that doorway but doesn’t open into either space. But, as Steven Scordio admits, achieving that kind of radius, so that everything had symmetry and would be in proportion, was somewhat of a challenge. Designed by architect Edward Siegel, the library is another departure from the home’s loft-like character. Siegel ornamented it with egg-anddart cornices and moldings and Corinthian columns that are seemingly luxe interiors

The master bathroom is a serene escape made for pampering and is centered around the glass-androck-crystal chandelier that de la Torre designed in Italy. The walls are covered in a metallic Venetian plaster and the Waterworks sink hardware is made from sleek hammered nickel. The bronze-and-goat-hair Marc Bankowsky stool was purchased at Maison Gerard.

A Sabina Fay Braxton washed silk-velvet was upholstered on the walls and on the headboard in the master bedroom and is broken up by metallic linen draperies made by Lauren Hwang. The metallic bedding is from Frette, and the silver parchment-wrapped nightstand was custom designed by de la Torre.

more at home in a Park Avenue pre-war apartment. “It becomes a neoclassical set piece in this modern building, which has very tall ceilings, exposed beams and electrical conduits,” Siegel says. The library is also one of the more personal spaces in the home offering a casual and comfortable space to read and be surrounded by things the client loves. Built-in bookshelves not only store books but provide ample space to house a curated collection of Asian-influenced pottery, vintage collectibles and black-and-white family photographs. The personal touches help bring the lofty space back to down to size. In the master bedroom, pink utterly evaporates, and is swathed in teal: the client’s “other favorite color.” But elsewhere it is clear—in a way that would have pleased Kay Thompson’s character—that de la Torre was able to “think pink” from a new, thoroughly modern perspective. I
t’s difficult to imagine why anyone would want to escape Los Angeles. But Palm Springs, California—with its dry climate, sculptural mountain ranges and cinematic blue sky—has served as a prominent getaway for Hollywood legends such as Frank Sinatra,
Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe since the early 20th century. Today, not much has changed. The storied desert landscape is still hosting its fair share of L.A.-based talent, including designer Vance Burke. “Palm Springs is to Los Angeles what the Hamptons are to New York City,” he explains. “I especially like that it’s a small town with a progressive population that appreciates design.” With a steadfast affection for Palm Springs in place, Burke searched and found his own piece of historical design to appreciate: a 1960s stucco-and-concrete-block house designed by architect Richard Harrison. The structure is situated beside a golf course, and Burke was taken

large-scale artworks. “The house became like a design lab,” Burke says. “I pushed the envelope and tried new things. It was an opportunity to be more expressive and use more color because it’s a second home, and I’m not in it all the time.” The designer’s experiments include a black glass partition wall he used to separate the main living area from the dining space and a casual area, dubbed the martini lounge, where he placed bright green low-lying chairs and a futuristic white-lacquer console. His bold choice of colors didn’t stop there. “The custom 18-foot-long orange sofa in the television room is an anti-depressant,” he says. “The master bedroom features turquoise and greens, and there are tangerine linen curtains in the guest bedroom.” luxe interiors

In selecting the furnishings, Burke layered American and European vintage pieces, custom designs, and contemporary items and fabrics to create a distinctive style. “A mix of things is more personal,” he explains. “It’s like when someone cooks and uses multiple flavors that reinforce each other and give greater depth.” In the living room, he offset a Paola Lenti-designed chaise lounge with a pair of 1970s Italian chairs wearing custom Mongolian lambskin slipcovers. For the dining area, Burke found a fantastical vintage table and a set of

chairs designed by Paul Evans. And because he wanted to maintain an ethereal feeling in the light-filled kitchen, the designer customized a massive Lucite-and-glass table to function as a second dining area. “A big island just feels so standard,” he says. “At any party, everyone always winds up in the kitchen anyway.” Todd Peter, Burke’s design partner and art consultant, collaborated on the interiors and helped to select impactful artwork for practically every wall in the house. “The fun thing about Vance’s house is the volumes,” says Peter. “They kind of spoke and just asked for great art.” A Damien Hirst limited-edition serigraph and a massive acrylic

the faces of men, by Lindsay McCrum, lines a long wall connecting the dining area and martini lounge. “It’s three men who are 25 years old, and three men who are 50 years old,” Peter says. “Depending on the time of day you look at them, different faces seem younger or older.” Burke called in lighting designer Pia Deleon-Neumayr of Plug Lighting to help illuminate the artwork and place the house’s concealed lighting. Having once lived in New York City and now in Los Angeles, Burke relishes the creative opportunity his desert retreat affords him. “So many times I do a beige sofa or cream-colored curtains,” he says. “This house allows me a little freedom.” L luxe interiors

At the recent Chair Dare, Luxe Interiors + Design Editor in Chief Pamela Jaccarino challenged four young designers—Andrew Maier, Jenny Wolf, Sam Allen, and Anna Burke—to create custom Palecek chairs using Kravet fabric. The chairs were unveiled during What’s New, What’s Next at the New York Design Center’s Palecek showroom, and in a lively panel discussion, the designers spoke about their inspirations as well as the trends they are seeing in today’s consumer choices and designs.
