This is a bi-annual publication from Sandqvist, made by Sandqvist. We want you to get to know us and to grasp the feeling we have for bags and accessories. We also want to share our sources of inspiration with you! In this issue we celebrate two upcoming and quite different bag series: one minimalistic and luxury leather series inspired by four classic icons from Swedish cinematic history (page 28), and one over-sized urban collection – the offspring of a collaboration with our friends from the creative studio Respect My Hustle (page 20). We’ve also decided to delve into our unforeseen love for gardening. We sent journalist Jenny Nordlander to write about the tradition of colony gardening, an old folk movement initiated in the 1800s in order to help gray city folks access a piece of green. Together with photographer Saga Berlin, she meets urban farmers, hang-arounds, and back yard chicken enthusiasts who don’t hesitate to make soup of their beloved friends. Read more on page 38. But we start this issue with a breath-taking Norwegian landscape as taken from Lord of the Rings. Sandqvist owners Daniel, Anton, and Sebastian took our photographer Knotan to one of the most isolated parts of our neighboring country for a fishing trip. Join them on page 6. Happy reading!

Fishing in Norway’s untouched and dramatic nature has always been a dream shared by the four of us: Daniel, Anton, and myself from Sandqvist, and our house photographer Knotan. We had the chance to go thanks to our good friend Dag Vidar Øksland, who owns a large piece of land with access to several lakes of crystal clear water. For the first ascent up the mountain to the hut that would be our base camp, we had assistance from a six-wheeler loaded up with all of our equipment, laboring up the trail and over streams. But finally the path became too steep and rugged and we had to carry our gear on our backs for the last 90 minutes. For the next three days, the hut gave us shelter and refuge, a little 4x5 square meter building with moss on the roof and three boards for a door, built just above the tree line. It was there we slept, made dinner, ate breakfast and stared out into the great wide open. At night, the thermometer crept down towards zero and when we woke the fine grass outside was frostbitten. We started each morning with a hearty breakfast consisting of porridge, fruit, and strong coffee. Then we hiked for a few hours up the mountain ridges and down the valleys. The landscape seemed to be taken straight out of the most spectacular scenes from Lord of the Rings, where we fished in both lakes and streams at an altitude of 1000 meters. If we were thirsty, we dropped our canteens in a stream and enjoyed the most cool and refreshing water we’ve ever had. If we were hungry, we caught a fish and grilled it right on the spot. On the following pages you can enjoy some of Knotan’s stunning photos from the trip.

The story of RMH:

From pushing rap mixtapes on the streets of Stockholm in the 90s to successfully building a company and brand with great artistic visions and social influence, Respect My Hustle has been to hell and back and came out blazing. When Silvana Imam of RMH was invited to Sandqvist’s 10year anniversary, the two creative forces started a collaboration that led up to a new line of customized bags, which premiers this spring.

“Do you have a lighter? Or matches? I want to light this candle.” Silvana Imam is rummaging around the east Stockholm music studio for something to get her scented candle going. It’s late fall and as the afternoon transforms into evening the streets outside the window are quickly turning pitch black. The studio is dimly lit, and even though it’s sparsely furnished it’s hard to find things in here. Silvana finally spots a lighter next to a speaker. She lights the candle and smiles. “There. It’s way nicer like this, right?” Silvana Imam is the rapper on every Swede’s lips right now, and one of the brightest shining stars of the RMH Management roster. With a recent hard-hitting EP proclaiming the rise of Silvana and her “power pussies” plus an outspoken anti-racism agenda she has become the epicenter of a new movement toward love, feminism and openness – in a country that, the last five to six years, has seen a political climate that is quickly turning about as cold as the Scandinavian winter. “I never intended to be that voice. But there was no one taking that spot, and it needed to be taken. And so I took it.” Silvana’s first steps to becoming an MC started when she was seven years old and borrowed her neighbor’s copy of the Fugees The Score. After a few months they realized that she had no intention of giving it back, so they bought Silvana a copy of her own for Christmas that year. Getting deeper into hip hop – from learning the lyrics to Jay-Z songs by heart to yearning for Xzibit’s Helly Hansen jacket in the video for his ’96 anthem Paparazzi – she started to write rhymes herself. Already into poetry and concerned about injustices, Silvana strove to find her own sound early on. But it was not until


Adam (then called Adm) was the rapper. When the opportunity arose to open for Promoe – of the spray can-toting rap crew Looptroop – they didn't hesitate to say yes. “I was making a living putting up posters on street corners. To finance the tour I worked day and night all over the city. It was crazy.” With only one officially released single, Bangin’ On The System, and no real experience doing live shows, Adam and Babak headed out. When they came back home the two felt a need to take their work to the next level. “We sat at home killing MySpace with our music every day. We pushed Bangin’ On The System and got plays in LA, the Bahamas and all kinds of places. We also decided for Adam to change his name to Adam Tensta. Then everybody who googled ‘Tensta’ (a Stockholm suburb) would come across Adam's music. And Tensta would get a positive connotation with the help of Adam. It was all planned.” Adam Tensta released two more singles, They Wanna Know and My Cool that got high rotation on MTV and took him on tours around Sweden and on big producer meetings in the USA. “It was everything we had ever dreamed of. Me and Adam had meetings with Jimmy Iovine (Interscope) and hung out at Bad Boy Records. We also did a seven-hour studio session with Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas. But when we got back to the hotel room we threw the CD-R with beats in the garbage. They later turned out to be huge hits for Will.I.Am, but Adam was like: ‘Why should I rap on something that we do better?’ He has always had a really strong sense of integrity.”

meeting Babak Azarmi and RMH that it became as elaborted and pure as it is today. “A mutual friend told me to call him because she felt we shared a similar vision of art and music. And so we hung out a few times, and I soon realized that we weren’t really talking about music anymore. We were talking about feelings, struggles and what we wanted in life. We were talking about something bigger.” Fifteen years earlier a gang of eight boys – with big sweaters saying “Respect My Hustle” in capital letters and t-shirts wrapped around their heads – are turning heads on lunchtime shoppers on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm. One of them is rapper Adam Tensta – who is yet to blow up – another is young Babak Azarmi. “We were pushing our mixtapes and wanted to conquer the world. But we weren’t very focused. What really fueled us though was that nobody wanted to give us a shot. Instead they closed the doors of opportunities on us. One night, after one of these incidents, I went home really frustrated. And I came up with the name Respect My Hustle. After that night, we came out much harder. That’s when it all began.” Babak Azarmi is sitting in RMH's head office, called The Box. This is the creative hub for a lot of the brand's work. Babak works here, sleeps here and hustles here. RMH as a brand has been active since 2006 when Babak decided to do it full-time. By that time there was only three of the original members left – Babak, Nils Svennem Lundberg and Adam Tensta. Babak did administration, Nils was the producer and

Adam’s original way of dressing has raised some eyebrows in the traditional hip hop world. His punk style can only be traced back to early Beastie Boys and the neon outfits he’s been rocking, well, it has never really been done before. “Style and aesthetics have to me always been a way to show your creativity, freshness and courage. That’s why I put the word ‘Egen’ (Individuality) on the Sandqvist bags. You need to go your own way to be able to do what you really want. Sure, sometimes people have looked at me weirdly for the way I dress. But what are these hip hop kids in their Adidas outfits gonna tell me? Nothing. We saved Swedish hip hop.” Adam Tensta is about to release his third album, and might once again change the direction of the scene. Silvana Imam also has new music coming out. But apart from that – until today, RMH as a record label has only released two full-length albums and one EP. However, the brand stays vital through projects like “Nästa Nivå” (Next Level), which helps young talents connect with experienced musicians. This way knowledge about the industry is handed down to aspiring artists – a way to collaborate that didn’t exist when RMH was producing their early mixtapes. RMH is also active on Soundcloud where talents like Eboi, Dida and the latest addition 17-year old rapper Nebay Males upload songs. Adam Tensta is used to his phone beeping from messages from Nebay with late night rap memos and song sketches.

Adam is doing the dishes in his Tensta apartment. He is neatly dressed in a shirt under a knee-length knitted pullover. Adam speaks gently, and it’s quite obvious that this is not your ordinary rap artist. However, in the living room the unofficial fifth element of hip hop – after rap, scratching, break dancing and graffiti – is on display. Video games. Adam has six to seven consoles, an obsession that we’ve heard about on his track “My Life in 8-bit”. He explains with warmth that they all mark different times in his life, and it’s impossible to name a favorite game. How do you compare 80’s classic Ice Climber to a modern and visually stunning adventure like Metal Gear Solid? It was the late 90’s – Nintendo 64 times – when Adam started making noise on the rap scene. Back then, the music climate in Stockholm was very different from today. Hip hop records were scarce. Adam and his crew were laying vocals over instrumentals by Nas, Mobb Deep and Gangstarr that they found at Pitch Control – a vinyl record store whose value for the emergence of the Swedish hip hop scene can’t be overestimated. One day they met Babak through a mutual friend. “Babak had earlier worked as a basketball coach and was more organized and experienced than us. He really completed the crew. Babak was the one who phoned everyone to make us come to the studio to record our mixtapes. But still, it was hard work to make a name for ourselves and make people understand the rap thing. Nothing came for free.” While US rap was struggling to get back on track after hip hop’s “golden era” in the mid nineties – and Swedish indie hip hop was still sampling the shit out of Bo Hansson’s psychedelic 70’s record Lord Of The Rings and Jan Johansson’s moody Jazz på svenska (Jazz in Swedish) – Adam Tensta went his own way with mini-malistic and electronic infused beats. As his first single blew up on the Internet, RHM got the idea to release the label’s very first album instead of making another mixtape. In 2007 the highly anticipated It’s a Tensta Thing was released. “I remember thinking ‘how many people will listen to a Swede rapping in English over electro beats?’ But as things turned out, that record actually set the standard for a lot of the modern hip hop sound – worldwide. I truly believe that hip hop wouldn’t sound as it does today if it wasn’t for that record.” Adam and Babak’s trips to the US opened a lot of doors for RMH, but also for others. “I think we broadened a lot of people’s horizons. Record companies realized that hip hop doesn’t have to come from Queens or Brooklyn to be real. We can do it in Sweden! People in the States started to check for hip hop outside their own borders. Dope rap from Africa, that was earlier labeled world music, started to gain some respect. I’m happy to be a part of that.”

Back at Silvana’s studio we are listening to the upcoming EP Jag Dör För Dig (I’ll Die For You). She gracefully bows her head while we bump the tracks of a more personal – and lyrically razor sharp – Silvana. Talking to her about her music is just like talking to Babak or Adam. It tends to end up somewhere else, far from just beats and rhymes. RMH seems to rather exist in a world of visions, fantasies and frictionless references to Simone de Beauvoir, Louis CK and Wu-Tang Clan. “I believe that the only thing we have that is real is our dreams. But still, we learn from an early age not to believe in them. I mean, what if we were taught in school to really believe in them? That you can be whatever you want to be? Shit, our society would be so much better then. Even though I am living my dream right now, I am still dreaming. I want to do shows in London, Paris and LA one day. And I will. I know I will.”

“I’ve gone from saint to whore and back to saint again, all in one lifetime,” Ingrid Bergman said when asked to sum up her career. The talented Swede first took Hollywood by storm with her fresh, girl-next-door image as she made a stamp on cinematic history with 1940s films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious and the classic of all classics Casablanca. So when Bergman, who was married and had a daughter with a Swedish dentist, began a passionate affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini (who was also married) she generated an enormous scandal in America. The couple set up a home in the less moralistic Italy. Their marriage produced five films and three children before they parted ways and Bergman made her triumphant comeback to Hollywood. In 1975, after Bergman had managed to attain a third Oscar as well as a third husband, she stated in an interview: “I have had my different husbands, my families. I am fond of them all and I visit them all. But deep inside me is the feeling that I belong to show business.”

Director Bo Widerberg revolutionized Swedish film with equal parts creativity, chaos and conflict. Widerberg, who started off as a writer, first introduced himself to the film industry with his book, A Vision of Swedish Cinema, a real diatribe against Swedish cinema with a particular focus on Ingmar Bergman. So what on earth did the cocky working class man from Malmö have to contribute to Swedish cinema? A whole lot, as it turned out. His first hit film, the Raven’s End, came out in 1963 and remains to this day a favorite among Swedish film connoisseurs. It was one of three films by Widerberg that were nominated for an Oscar. But those who were most deserving of the prize were probably the colleagues and family members who put up with the chaotic creator. Widerberg had no qualms about driving his colleagues either mad or to the emergency room. One sound technician, for instance, developed acute heart problems while working on Stubby due to the director’s eleventh hour demands. After the curtain had already gone up at the premiere, Widerberg wasn’t satisfied with the sound and demanded that the ending be redone. Motorcycle police then rushed the movie reels to the theatre while the film was still rolling and the audience was none the wiser.

Push it! In a workout video that was released in 1992, about the same time as Britt Ekland’s 50th birthday, the camera pans along her well-formed derriere clad in a trendy g-string over spandex. At that point in time, Britt Ekland had been the embodiment of Nordic beauty – and sin – for almost thirty years. At the age of 21, she became an overnight sensation when she married the much older British actor and comedian Peter Sellers after a 10-day courtship. Her naked dance in the 1973 cult horror film The Wicker Man mesmerized more than her co-star, and after her appearance in the The Man with the Golden Gun, Britt Ekland became a Bond girl for life. After a tumultuous divorce from Sellers, Ekland had a string of romances, with significant others including Rod Steward and Warren Beatty. The actress doesn’t hold back the piquant details for her stormy relationships, revealing all in her autobiography True Britt. In the book she denies the rumor that Sellers had a heart attack during sex and reveals that Rod was so frugal that he made her buy their food at discount stores.

“I want to be let alone.” Greta Garbo’s line in the Oscar-winning Grand Hotel is an accurate description of the star’s attitude towards publicity. Today Garbo is almost better known for her reserve than for her starring roles, but in the 1920s and 30s La Davina was the undisputable queen of the big screen. Greta Garbo’s androgynous and seductive portrayal in motion pictures such as Mata Hari and The Lady of the Camellias captivated audiences, and when the first sound films broke through, her drawling voice with a light Swedish accent brought more than just acclaim. The mysterious Garbo was constantly surrounded by rumors of romance, with both men and women. She raised a well groomed eyebrow but never revealed the slightest detail about her private life. At the age of 36, Garbo announced that she was going to take a short break from show business. The Swedish sphinx then stayed away from film sets as well as the media and red carpet for 49 years, until she died in her hometown of New York in 1990.

Garden colonies and urban farming as a phenomenon grew out of the idea that poor families living in cramped urban neighborhoods needed rest and nature, but above all, the opportunity to grow food and survive. A hundred years later, we’re not starving but the need for an oasis in the middle of the gray chaos that is life remains, regardless of socioeconomic background.

fully fought against turning our flats to condominiums, are the same people who planned these gardens,” she says. In the 1970s, the open and lush backyards were demarcated by grey asphalt squares. They planted marigolds in the old oak barrels that were stashed in the laundry rooms in the cellar. “Where the hell did we get dirt?” Lena asks herself. “We went out and just took it I guess, at that time there were wild areas on Söder. Now we get dirt from the tenant association.” “When I moved here, I pulled out an old chair and sat below my window and read. Then I saw that barrel, which was filled with cigarette butts and filth,” Janne – the man with the glittery hair band – points to a large pot two meters away, surrounded by chickens. “So I planted three geraniums there. Then they grew.” Today, The Whip has four gardens that extend across an entire block due to the protection offered by the flats. The municipality and board approved both the chickens and the vegetable plots and most of the neighbors appreciate the effort even if some of them are allegedly “disturbed by all of the greenery.” They grow beautiful things, edible things and take care of the chickens and their eggs. Tomorrow, two of them will be sacrificed to the chicken soup gods, but we don’t talk about that. Now it’s time for breakfast. More and more people join. Ann-Marie who has just survived a hellish battle with cancer while the neighbors took turns taking care of her dog. “God, everyone cared sooo much. I was so touched, alone as I am.” Margit who spearheaded the protests in 1978, “childless as she is.” And Estelle who was once arrested by the police for sunbathing topless in the garden, “French as she is.” “I know who called the police,” Lena admits. “But it doesn’t matter, the whole thing was so ridiculous. A woman in her golden years should be able to do what she wants.” “Does anyone have three kronor ($0.4) I’m going to the church to buy a candle,” the French woman suddenly says. ”Take it out of the coffee can,” Janne says.

At Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 32 in central Södermalm in Stockholm, between the cars and the Vespas, you see hay in the street. Once you walk through the door, you understand why. Chickens. Free roaming chickens in the courtyard, not a single chicken in a cage. It almost feels as if they are cats. A man in a lime green sweatshirt from the 80s and a cap wanders among them. Under the cap, his long grey hair is fastened with a pink glittery band. While he sets out three coffee thermoses, a box with assorted mugs, a bottle of milk and a homemade cake, he talks to the hens who almost (literally) rub against his legs. “When you talk about urban farming, everyone imagines the tiny gardens and summer cottages. But it can be like this too. Greater Stockholm is full of garden plots without buildings and the waiting lists have grown immensely,” says Lena Israelsson, who joins us at the coffee table. It’s Sunday morning at 10 am, the time when the The Whip garden association eats breakfast together. In winter time, they sit and shiver in the stairwell, but today it is still summer. Lena is one of the driving forces behind The Whip. She was there from the beginning, in the 1970s, when it all started. Södermalm was one of the first islands in Stockholm to be built up, with its name first appearing in a letter written by a bishop in the 13th century. During the industrialization of the late 19th century, “Söder” became home to the working classes. It was cramped, poor and dirty. No one really wanted to live there, as opposed to today when it numbers among Stockholm’s most sought-after neighborhoods. In the 1970s, the city wanted to go in to clean up the area and tear down many of the existing buildings, including the neighborhood surrounding Wollmar Yxkullsgatan. But Lena and company stepped in to protest until the city surrendered. They were allowed to keep their run-down flats, which also received facelifts. “Those of us who were involved then, and who later success-

average industrial worker’s annual salary at the time was 1077 kronor ($137). In 2014, it’s still cheap to rent a colony plot – if you can get a hold of one. In just a few years, many areas in Stockholm have gone from no wait at all to several years. And the situation has been exacerbated by star chefs, fine dining establishments, and celebrities who seek out the highest quality fresh ingredients or write bestsellers about growing your own vegetables. If you want a plot “in the city”, the average waiting time is about 15 years. For the most popular spot in Stocholm, Tantolunden in Söder, you’ll wait about 25 years.

She takes out three kronor coins and a 20 kronor ($3) bill. “That should be enough for the offering as well.” “Those who have should give and those who need should take,” Janne says with satisfaction. On the gate, in full view of anyone leaving The Whip, is a note. “NOW IT’S GONE TOO FAR!!! Early this morning a fourth chicken was maimed and killed by a roaming dog. We are considering contacting the police. If those who are responsible want to prevent this, we suggest you get in touch with one of us who tends the chickens.” The first garden colonies came to Sweden at the end of the 1800s. They started in the southern part of the country, influenced by the Germans. People started carving up the land on the outskirts of towns to give the poor urban dwellers living in cramped quarters a chance to grow their own food. The already limited access to fruit and vegetables became even worse during the first and second world wars as Sweden was cut off from other countries. The garden colonies were, for a period of time, a means of survival for a large segment of the population. Copenhagen was the model for Stockholm. Social democratic politician Anna Lindhagen was inspired after a visit to the Danish capital. “There were city folks strolling around… it was as if you were in the real countryside,” she supposedly said. Together with Anna Åbergsson, who was also born with a silver spoon and active within the women’s movement, she convinced the administration of the Royal Game Park to test out garden colonies. Three colonies were built over the course of a year. Their appearance was extremely precise. Anna and Anna controlled the smallest details to avoid the feeling of an “untamed shantytown.” In 1907, the annual rent for a plot was 5 öre ($.04) per square meter. A normal sized plot of 200 square meters thus cost around 10 kronor ($1.3) per year. For comparison, the

She is carrying a bright and shiny ladder she bought hardly an hour earlier at the hard ware shop. Both of these contrasting characters have neighboring plots to Gunnel Sjöberg. But they don’t greet each other when they meet on the path. Gunnel, sporting a dotted dress and perfectly coiffed hair, sits on a rickety chair in one of her two (!) adjacent plots, lights a cigarette and explains that there is a variety of people here and not everyone is her cup of tea. But the man who had one of her plots before, she liked him a lot. He delivered bread for a living and was the son of a chamberlain. Another friend here is filthy rich, another works as a cashier at a home decorating chain, she explains. “You can’t really see it on the surface, but there are major class differences here. Our interest in growing things is what brings us together, I guess. There are some of us who know each other, but mostly we just mind our own business.”

better – cutting the grass and feeling calm meanwhile being right in the middle of everything. “There’s a lot of partying in Tanto so it’s not unusual that people are making love in the bushes. One time someone was fucking in the neighbor’s bush behind here and I walked out and cleared my throat and it didn’t do anything. Then I wondered who was I to interrupt them in the act. Should I force my loneliness on them? No.”

There aren’t any problems here. Nor have there been any issues since DIY farming became trendy and guys like the one in the striped sweater have started to show up with straw in their mouths, Gunnel says. “Now we can kick out anyone who is growing sow thistle and ground elder here, weeds too. Since people are waiting, we can have requirements, it’s good.” She casts a critical glance back towards the large concrete blocks of the apartment building that towers on the other side of the railroad track running along the association’s property. On the other side is a spruce forest and just a few meters a way is the pee bucket, the contents of which should be bestowed upon your favorite flower to give it extra growing power. “Although I don’t like the kids that come here, if you’ll excuse me, who believe that all you have to do is sprinkle a few seeds and then come back in August and have a look.”

In many ways, they are polar opposites. Gunnel Sjöberg, a 62-year-old from Stockholm and Kalle Wannerskog, a 32-year- old from Gothenburg on the other side of the country. She has had a long, stable career as a psychiatric nurse and has two sons. Nearing retirement. Hearty. Moreover she has short hair. Kalle Wannerskog has long hair and is at the beginning of his career as a roving reporter. He doesn’t have any kids and is, if not lazy, mostly concerned with drinking beer, collecting unusual experiences, and just generally enjoying himself. Kalle is a fashionable resident of Söder, Gunnel is a selfassured woman from the suburbs. Add the gang from Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 32 to that. A group of ageing hippies. What they all have in common is an interest in gardening. Gunnel might be a pro who can grow more than she can eat herself and Kalle is an amateur who can hardly keep a carrot alive. Janne and Lena have expanded their ventures and taken on the animal kingdom. Together they create an accurate image of the Swedish colony and gardening movement. It’s a meeting place for young and old, and for those with different levels of experience. Those who want to be self-sufficient rub shoulders with those who are satisfied with a tomato plant, a sunset and a few beers. They putter around their small gardens, exchange a few words with the neighbors, lean against a rake and appreciate life. They might appreciate the fact that they aren’t somewhere else. These small gardens – an oasis in the middle of life’s afflictions. Just as they were originally intended.

Later that same day, in the afternoon, Kalle Wannerskog visits his colony plot for the first time since June. Although “his plot” might not be the best descrition. His former boss lets him take care of a small corner of the plot, which is in Tanto, the most sought-after colony garden in the country. “It’s a win-win situation. I’m their house elf and take care of the place when they are gone. Now and then I come by and hang out and sip a glass of wine,” he says. Kalle takes care of the family’s guinea pigs as payment. Loppan and Luna. He looks at what he’s grown, neatly marked off with boards. It’s mainly soil, a few small weeds that stick up here and there and some old, dried flowers discarded in a heap on top. As if his box were an unloading point, a compost heap. “I feel a little guilty. I really did want to make my box nice. Not just dead. I feel really bad but it’s just that I’ve worked too much this summer, that’s the truth.” Last year he got both tomatoes and bean blossoms, he says. And he wants to be here more. He can’t think of anything

The story of:

Sandqvist has produced backpacks, handbags, purses, and everything in between for over ten years. It all started with a homemade laptop bag Anton Sandqvist sewed at his kitchen table, and now the company employs 14 people and is represented in 35 countries around the world. “With such a large production, being environmentallyfriendly and having a humane manufacturing policy is something quite self-evident. We actually design the bags to be repairable. Our contribution to the world is to create long lasting products made of good material and under good working conditions,” says founder and CEO Anton Sandqvist. Sandqvist produces bags in three small family-owned factories in India, and they have worked with the same factories since they started producing there in 2008. The company’s growth and influence has enabled the factories to invest in new facilities with modern working environments and give the workers pensions, health care and increased salaries. “When thinking back on the journey that started when I stitched the first bag in 2004, the fact that we provide good jobs for all these people is the one single thing that makes me most proud.”
