‘The camera bodies have been made out of cardboard,wood,sheet metal,die-cast metal and a variety of plastics’ - Norman Goldberg,Camera Technology (pg199) material used in the intervention were inspired by the camera hardware. modern cameras are constructred from plastics and little steel. but as the interevention would accomodate traditional photography, old camera materials was considered. the final scheme is made of aluminium, wood and imitation leather, materials that were used in constructing the old camera’s.

prep rooms and dark rooms housed at the back of the buildiing for privace and quiet, the dark rooms are available upon appointments only.
gallery, light and temperature controlled. constructed from KLH. the circulation is layed out to mimic the light trap often found in traditional cameras.

the walls are painted with epoxy paint for easy clean ceilings arepainted white for maximum reflectance of safelights and white lights. darkroom walls are painted light gray to minimize relfections around enlarger space. finishing rooms are then covered with a continous cork tack board material, from counter top to ceiling. also painted a light gray to enhance displays.

floors are covered in Altro course resin and underfloor heating inserted.

path to the gallery. the high opaque balustrades disconnects one from the activities below, creating the illusion of having entered into an entirely different premises. this connects to the exisiting mezzanine and it sits on top of half T beam structures. retail area. one has to go throught the retail area to get to the gallery, forcing users to look at the display. retail area sells a mix of things from camera parts to camera papers however it also exhibits old rare cameras, housed in besboke shelves. thus acting as a prelude to informing the users of the technical information and equipment used to produce the images displayed in the gallery.

light trap walls are painted flat black (walls, ceiling, floors, jambs,doors) to prevent white light reflecting into the darkroom.
the amber floor. in traditional photography, the safe lights used in darkrvooms are red and dark amber. these two colours have no ditremental effect on exposed negatives and developing chemicals. using the amber, I highlighted the circulation of the intervention, which is been organised to mimic light traps. this floor detail is made of non- slip impact absorbing dalsouple flooring.

structural interventions.
9 self service upon entry, one is met with a self service reception stand. this takes bookings for dark rooms, and events, galleries etc. this is convenient for professionals and patrons but might be intimidating for first time visitors. the signs printed on the reception will lead all enquiries to the retail area.

the beams inserted to support the interventions are painted a dark amber. this creates spatial seperation without walls .distincts beween the new and the old. the amber also aims to guide the users and draw them in to participate
