SANDRA ABABIO - DANSO Portfolio Interior Architecture
The Grade II listed building was commissioned in 1823 as the world’s first purpose built locomotive works on Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was where Robert Stephenson’s engineering works gave birth to the railway age; the famous steam engines built here were subsequently exported to developing railways all over the world. The design philosophy was to create layers. That is, the existing building is a depiction of the Industrial age of the 1800’s; thus being a representation of a particular time. The intervention will employ the material and design technology of the present to also portray the contemporary age. This will then create layers of two time periods through the contrast of material, technology and design language. The brief is to design a facility for re-purposing and/or creative reuse. The scheme will be open to the public and will be the token space offering the learning of and return to the art of traditional photography. It will operate day and night; being activated at night by the cafe, shop and galleries and at day by the darkrooms, studios and workshops. catering to professionals and amateurs of the art of traditional photography.

ndividuals with sensory impairments become extremely reliant on an aide to assist in their daily survival needs and they quickly become a recluse, not opening up to or trusting many people outside those that are communicated with daily (Stine, 1997). The goal of the Gibside Walled Garden proposal is to create a place that could enrich and enhance the social life skills of a person with visual impairment. With an enriched social surrounding, an individual may begin to gain a higher sense of security and confidence as they grow into a more independent being. The proposed activities could begin to expose these individuals to others around them in a safe and familiar environment.
Gibside
One activity considered is gardening. Individuals with sensory impairments may find that working with plants can be a very therapeutic activity, and entice the sensory impaired and community members to be united when working with plants in conservatories and gardens. Social interaction could help these individuals develop socially as they overcome some daily challenges presented through these activities. Although communication is key in the development of an individual with sensory impairments, the design for the Gibside Walled Garden also reserves space for personal time. Meditation and “quiet time can be a very important aspect in the life of an individual with dual-sensory impairments due to the frustration and stress that individual experiences during the course of a day. This design proposal is based on numerous research studies that have found access-to-nature, whether through views, sunlight or activities held outdoors, to be both healing and calming. Colour has also been reported to be crucial in the built environment. It acts as a guide for the visually impaired to use as tool for easire circulation through a building

6.2_RE-IMAGINING GIBSIDE: FACILITY for the VISUALLY IMPAIRED Gibside Walled Garden
- Idea of the walled garden being a transition into Gibside - connectivity + access - The walled garden acts as an entrance. A crucial point of transition to the heritage - Transition from dark to light, reminiscent of a seed germinating from the soil into the sunlight. - Prospect and Refuge Theory. Seeing and experiencing space beyond the confines of their immediate surroundings (prospect), and the option to retreat and seek protection from everything (refuge)
