How can our design be vital as vitamin? Answer will be provided as follows.

Our design will be achieving the following aspects:

Inclusion

Flexibility

Shareability

Colours

Practicality

Materiality

Typologies - Symbol of Home Some furnitures are designed in the form of houses to symbolize Light House as forever the support of each family. They are located in every communal space of Light House and this implies no matter private or public space, it belongs to everyone and everything is shareable.

Cabin

Tree House This is a suggested program which is additional to the terrace. It is a secret place for children and adults to take a rest at.

Typologies - Shelves To make spaces more functional and practical, in terms of furniture, we have put a lot of efforts on designing the shelf. It is not only helping with the storage issue but we are also hoping to bring residents into the design. The structure of the shelves are fixed but the layout will be assembled by residents so they can create their own version of useful storage shelf. Shelf can be found in almost all the communal spaces, they are featured as follows:

White Board (Record important notice/duty list for tidying up the space

Plants Layer (for decoration)

Extra shelfing divider

Toy Storage

Book Storage With a display section on top

Vitamin A - Children’s Room Activity Area Shelf design: Irreducible elements including -the shelf( as horizontal support for contents, also movable for different usage) -the upright( vertical support for the structure) The framework here is functional and expressive but minimal to be easily portable and managed Heavy timber interlocked to form a rigid system, which can create large spans with minimum use of materials. The partition is used for storing different item, it also include a space for piano and tv set Cabin: Eating area demonstrates the importance of family and community gathering, which simply transiting the opening of the kitchen area to the room with a house-shaped structure indicate the happiness of sharing foods together.

Vitamin A - Children’s Room Reading/ Playing Area We think a design that can boost creativity and reading habits of kids are of paramount importance. Here, the introduction of black board and magnetic white board can provide numerous opportunities for the kids to sketch, to present their idea, and while the staff and parents can utilised them as display board or set reminder. In addition, there is a small reading corner and we hope that there is a indicative place for the children to be comfortably sit down and enjoy their precious reading time.

Vitamin B - Details of Terrace Terrace is located right upstairs of the entrance, we suggest two additional programs to create a more playful and calm space for the residents. Program 1: Rocks Climbing The slope along the stairs to entrance is not too steep so we suggest adding rocks climbing to the entrance, this makes the environments more lively and playful. Therefore, kids’ playground is not just limited to children’s room, it brings more joy to enhance children’s experience. To ensure safety, ground will be covered with rubber mulch. Program 2: Tree House The tree house will be sitting on the slope supported with timber structural columns. It serves as a secret place for children and adults to stay in. To make sure the tree house is safe, it can only be accessed via terrace and it is sealed with timber board, 4 small openings on the wall will be served as windows to allow sunlight intake.

Vitamin B - Details of Terrace Integrated Green Space To make terrace a more pleasant space to stay at, we suggest the introduction of an integrated green space. By planting herbs and vines on particular part of the balcony, the healing effect of the plantations will eventually improve the intellectual well-being of residents. To make this green space feasible, drip type system is recommended. This system is durable, delicate and transparent. Whatsmore, it helps mitigating strong sunlight during summer and regenerate vividness in the terrace floor.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM

CLIMBING PLANTS

Hook for hanging decoration

The construction of this system required green technology, the following is the suggestion: Work Area: 300 SF terrace(approximately 50SF) Design Load Conditions 500kg/m2(Balcony planting base) Soil Thickness About 500mm Soil Type: Artifical Lightweight soil Humidity of soil: 0.85 Planting Quantity: 8 species of vines(H2.0m/H0..5m) Irrigiation method: automatic Irrigiation System(drip type) Reference

MOVEABLE BENCH Benches are provided to move around PLANT POTS BENCH AND PLANT POTS GROUP Wooden benches are provided as fixed components

CHAIN DESIGN FOR SIMPLE DRAINAGE water will drip off from the climber plants to the floor water collection smalll tanks

Oasis of Light House A successful integrated green system will be served as an air purifying layer which will be able to reduce noise and provide shading effect.

Aesthetics There is a extended wooden plank shading projected from the existing “ceiling”, this provides shading effects and makes the terrace a more pleasant place to stay at. we provide a grid system of hook which residents can hang objects. On special occasion or festival, residents can hang objects on the hooks. For instance, during Mid-Autumn Festival, lanterns can be hanged.

Vitamin C - Women’s Development Room/Office

Overview

This room is with the height of 3.7 metres. To utilise the space fully, we are planning to transform the room into 2 levels. We hope to create space more functions and with higher flexibility.

Scenario: Office/Workplace

The lower level goes up to 1.8 metres. It will be served as a work space where woodwork, sewing work and office will take place at.

Vitamin C - Women’s Development Room/Office Scenario: DIY Workshop

Some furnitures are movable in order to fulfill notion of flexibility. Therefore, this room can also be a classroom/lecture place setting. This allows residents of Light House to have more community event space to hold workshop DIY class. Ultimately, it can enhance residents’ social life at Light House.

Scenario: Movie Night

The upper level (attic) is served as a resting area where it is also a functional space that enables different community activities/events to go on. The space is big enough is put projector to play movies so we suggest residents holding more events at the attic.

Vitamin C - Details of Women’s Development Room/Office Stairs/Shelf

White-board

The stairs does not only serve as connection to the attic but also a shelf. As this room is served for multiple functions so it needs more storage to put documents, tools or even some machines. The depth is of the shelf is 0.5 meters and the height is based on the stairs’ height.

White-boards are put on the walls of this room in order to make the room more interactive, it can be used to mark down notes also teaching.

Shelf is one of the core scheme from our concept. We hope residents can be involved in the design process, the layout of the shelf is decided by them. Therefore, they can change the positions of some slab to make storage more practical. Some baskets are provided to store small items, each basket is with different colours to make the room to look more playful.

Vitamin D - Roof

During Nightime, the lightbox feature will provide gentle lighting for the residents.

Farming is the main activity at the rooftop. We designed some plant pots with some functions for residents to use. As rooftop also served for large gathering events space so we are hoping to use lightweight materials to make the plant pots movable. By moving the plant pots around to spare more spaces for events.

Vitamin D - Roof Scenario: Barbecue Gathering

Alternatively, barbecue gathering can be another scenario. Residents can organise more gathering events on the roof to increase the bonding between families.

Vitamin D - Details of Roof Plant Pots To make farming more interesting, the functions added to the plant pots include benches and small table. Also, the rooftop appears to be too sunny so we add some umbrella holders for residents to insert umbrella in. Therefore, residents are not limited to just go by to water their plants but also can stay for longer. For night time, we have designed some shared pot that is luminous.

This is the suggested combo. It will be arranged by residents to see what they want.
