Architecture is art, is a constant state of changing that engaged with the people, the territorial and urban transformation and the social and cultural dimensions of the territory. In the Hong Kong city, there is an experience of paradox and alienation that people surround themselves with industrial networks, abandoning the tradition and the past that built the city. Considering the quarrying and mining sites in Hong Kong play a key role in the ethnographic and industrial connections in the past, the project question whether these disintegrating territories can be re-imagined and consider what types of architectural language of representation might be manifest in favor of the rediscovery of the past traces.

The argument of the thesis is to question the meaning of history and traces in order to evaluate the proposition of new relation between the environment and the people. By understanding the chronological changes of land and ground condition of the specific sites, the project can explore different moments of indifferent spaces and scales of association in conversation between the nature and the industrial artefact that once prominent in Hong Kong.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION An overview of the city and its bedrock and the chosen site for the project. Context Forgotten Land: elements/site/condition Time and space can be considered as the active transformation of energy and condition in Hong Kong, there is a quantitative magnitude in the landscape that constructed the built environment and existing environment today. Rock/ stone as object of inquiry in the field of geography and geology set up a situation that the Hong Kong society and community developed from, there is a huge opportunity to look for new origins with a kind of primitiveness and identity that questioned its own history. The recurring themes of abandoned land or resource exploitation in Hong Kong’s operational landscape generate an anarchic condition of architecture/urbanism which is constitutive of modernity that escapes from the duality between modern progression and primitive regression, thus it challenges the obscurity and division of urban and traditions.

The transformation of land in A kung Ngam. In Hong Kong the mountain used to be a sort of commons, but during the process of modernization, the land had to become private or public, decomposed and fragmented into shared ownerships of different individuals for practices of quarrying and commerce. For example the hakka clan, Tsang, operating the extraction as business and fortified his settlement with granitic rocks. Hence, most of the 19th century architecture were com-

posed of locally-sourced granite. The rocks are important source and economy to the society. Around the territory, there are dozens of quarries supplying rocks for the burgeoning metropolis and as a lucrative export goods. Today, Hong Kong is made of concrete, glass, steel, presenting an anonymously homogeneous blocks that occupied the ground, but for most of its history, the city was built from the rock it stands.
1985
The industrial and capitalistic network has superseded the ethnographic network long ago, leaving the scar, the abandoned land which is changed economically, ecologically and socially. City as ‘unfinished’ superposition of histories, context, architecture and situations. Our life is entirely surrounded by artificial artifact, people had forgotten the past at the expense of rapid globalisation and economic development.
As a result, there is an urge to create hybridization and reintroduction between the ethnographic and the industrial field. It is a time to review the tradition and the skills in formulating new response for the present and the future.

FINAL DESIGN
TERRAFFORMING A UNTOUCHED LAND The architecture responds to its position, sited on a continuous barren rock face. The main inhabitable spaces are integrated to the site with the suspension techniques and offers different functionality in specific. The pattern, developed by the cable, tends to disguise within the joints of the rock, adds to the sense of weightlessness and extreme to the site. All the structure is articulated by the steel framework from which wall enclosure are concealed behind. Staircases, bridges, walkway infiltrate the disruptive pattern of the site and establish a continuous journey across. The design is about unveiling what is there, what lies underneath and what is the story behind. A strive for objectivity, re-imagine the industrial and ethnographic networks once established in the site. An experience meaningful for people through one gesture of construction varied in terms of dimensions and spatial qualities.
The design process started with a field reconnaissance of the rock face by detailed surveying to determine best probable foundation points and overall route position, while accounting for tree and vegetation locations. Suitable locations for foundations were set up based on visual observation of the rock face, picking highly stable zone and ledges. There different types of rock anchor and cable are utilized. Landslide risk management was identified as a design constraints to a particular portion of the site. To mitigate visitor exposure to any rock fall, the walkway and main object are experimented to cantilevered from the rock face. Moreover, it is also recommended for the construction of a reinforced soil slope at the crest of the cliff, stabilizing the face with rock bolts and construction of rock fencing where indication of estimated rock trajectory are recorded.
Project Stages 01 Surveyor rappelled into the cliff to coordinates.
04 Provision of working platform
In this project, detailed gridded coordinate surveys are carried out to locate a suitable foundation points that avoid any falling rock hazards. Anchor points are fixed along upper part of the slope in 5000mm spacing where there is stable bedding rocks aligned perpendicular to the slope.
The set up of the primary cable will allow workers to generate a continuous working platform for construction in the middle part of the slope without disturbing the plants living on the cliff. #At each foundation location, rock bolts were installed to support the applied loads in two distinctive methods -tension at the guy cables -compression at the cantilever beams (it is used in either way or a hybrid way in the design)
02 Designer followed the 5000mm grid to provide sets of infrastructure The geometry of the structure are divided into equal segments, providing sets of standardised stairs, platform and steel tube frame for easier construction. #It is a key to avoid the use of cranes and heavy drilles that would have required cutting trees and other environmental damage. #The structure had to be self-supported all time during construction
03 Fixing of Anchor plate and primary cable and working platform (The process is resembled through pinning over the physical model) Three different types of anchorage are placed to the potential anchor sites while rappelling into the slope. The holes were drilled by hand with some went as deep as 5000mm by means of Bencher Drill, a small air-powered percussion drill that is mounted on an air-powered feed boom. First, the builders drilled a 600mm hold with the handheld percusssion drill Second, the builders insert the foot of the feed boom into the hole and drill the plate to the cliff. #The connections had to be bolted rather than welded and the different anchor design allows the flexibility of cables to rotate and arranged in different direction. # A pull test will be carried out once the installation of rock bolts finished to verify the capacity of the grout anchorage. After that anchor plate will be attached to the face and the bolts will then tensioned against the plate to a load approximately 10% higher than the design load. The post tensioning of bolts to prevent movement of foundation once the structure load applied.
05 Building of Main Structure A. Structure is suspended by steel cable attached to the anchor points in the granite rock face. A single small crane lowered the steel structure to the position section by section. B. Steel beams/floor plates are fixed to the rock with a C-shaped section. The construction will start off with the stairs and bridge segments to provide general layout of the design. After bolting the stairs, it also become a supporting forces for the three main rooms and 2 scenic spots which anchored against the slope as independent objects.
06 Modification on site
Sometimes a foundation point would prove weak once the start of the drilling, and as it is hard to change the position of the structure, there can be a change to the configuration of beams horizontally or attached to the lower part of the mountain for further reinforcement. #The key requirement of the design still had to be largely accord with the suspended aesthetics illustrated from the elevation plan.
07 Finishes
After fixing all the platforms in a designated position, the builders installed a stainless-steel mesh siding along the sides for the stairs, so visitors can travel the walkway in safety. The prefabricated cabin walls are then lowered and fixed to the floor platform.
List of Components (1)Rock Bolts for securing the foundations
Galvanized steel bars, 25mm/ 32mm in diameter, 5m long Varied according to the rock conditions and load applied by the structure. it is then anchored with cement grout for the entire length of the bar together with the galvanization prevents the material from chemical corrosion. 1.Anchor Nut 2.Bearing Plate 3.Face 4.Steel Bar 5.Cement Stone Coverage 6.Spacer
(2)Anchor Plate
Typical Rock Bolt
Three major types of anchor plates are considered: (a)Single-way anchor plates For the design of one cable connection(most commonly used type as it is easier to install and the bearing of the load become distributive across the anchorage points, hence it might need additionial points after load testing)
(b)Multi-directional anchor plates
Ideal for structure require flexibility in direction as well as enable connection to single points for tensioning, hence withstanding greater stress
(c) Rock anchor clamps
a Anchor plate #1
b Anchor plate #2
It is an alternative to the cable anchorage system for reinforcement using strut beam to increase compression
(3) Cable
c Anchor clamp
(d)Untensioned cable with loops to attach to the eyebolts in the anchorage
Eyebolts are important cable features that used for securing the anchorage points.
(e)Tensioned cable with 50mm, 100mm, 200mm in size with turnbuckles
d untensioned cable
This is the main types of cable utilised for the design as it could be secure and fixed to a fork head connection prefabricated on the structure.
(r)Strut beam(Room 1 particularly)
This alternative options is provided as there might need a horizontal compressive support to the structure.

Detached from the rock face, the viewing platform is suspended at its ends using steel cables. The prism-like structure create an inherent spatial figure describing the negative space washed by the heavy rain in the past. In the beginning, the form of the volume appeared to be fragmented and irregular in responding to the actual rock composition. Through engaging with the hanging construction system, and calculation of the actual extension distance of 4500mm, the form is simplified and re-modified by the direction of the stretching of the steel cable and anchorage system.

The central portion of the slope had a direct view for visitor coming from main street; There is a long stretching bedding at the middle sector of the slope, defining a small platform. It is of higher stability and the structure should take advantages of the position itself DESIGN IDEA(R2)
The main aim is to create an intimate space close to the rock face and function as a collection room of different rock samples. The10mx3m in plan building is designed to be half sitting to the natural rock platform. Initally the rectangular volume is supported by steel framing the the lower rock face. However, the relatively small dimension and the ground condition prove the redundancy of additional support. Instead of steel cable for suspension, the structure here is facilitated by copper piping for water harvesting. In mining or quarrying industry, there is a large demand in water supply for the aggregates treatment. Workers in the past collected rainwater for cooling the chemically blast or drill rock material. The articulation of the piping demonstrated not only the cultural influence but also engaged with model construction technology. It can be arranged to become a more advance and complex mechanical system.

Referenced to the typical workstation of slope workers in the past, the design starts from a simple repetitive vertical steel frame. The design principle of working cabin for the workers are ease of construction and flexible in arrangement and addition or extension. There is no specific record for the A Kung Ngam site but in most cases, the workstation are served as a service building for basic needs, documentation, for loading, traveling in height and avoiding the sun.

KEYWORD: TRANSFORAMTION, OBSOLESCENCE, EXPERIMENTAL HOUSEING, NON-URBAN,M ATERIAL TECTONICS LOCATION: ULAANBAATAAR, MONGOLIA
The studio investigate how architecture can inform and alter the trajectory of urban transformation. The objective is to reconceptualise architecture and territory as a dynamic and complex set of relationship in terms of urban, material, and social perspectives. To challenge the ubiquitous house model, the project aims to explore typologies that offer shared resources: public programs: a spaces to transform. Experimenting the idea of growth, densification, shrinkage in response to changes in context or demands of inhabitants. Starting with a drawing exercise to’map’ dynamics and register phases of change and to synthesise the qualities of ‘transformation’ with a given context.

3 CORKthe matieral matter
KEYWORD: MATTER EXPERIMENTATION, PUBLIC SPACE, MATERIAL FLOW, PROTOTYPING LOCATION: POMPEII,ITALY
Design with vulnerability as public spaces The pursuit of studio is to study a biological/ecological material-cork in an unconventional way, putting the well-developed, standardized, high-quality product aside, and investigating through five different material testing to create cork mixture that highlights its physical attributes, labor-intensive manufacturing, and celebrates the ‘weakness’ of material with active interaction to water context, community, time, in order to specify the design follow life cycle issue.
24
TYPE DESCRIPTION LOCATION SCALE ESTIMATED DETERIORATION
APPLICATION MATERIAL
Common one in application/cork industry:
The one we proposed is the more fragile, delicate(back to the unsophisticated):
non-water-soluble polyurethane binders to adhere the granules, used as the intermediate layer for waterproofing on public space above water
animal protein/plant adhesive binder mixture that has been abandoned from the industry, design with WEAKNESS
Factory/Industry off-site
At home/ Local Workshop/ On-site
MASS-production/factory scale
Local Craftsmanship, anyone(from any age and physical ability)
No structural deterioration sign, notably those natural cork products which associated with extremely high quality of impermeability and rigidity ,the outputs are controlled mechanically and retains the lightweight qualities so the precise resulted a desirable building structure
The structural deteroriation and degradation from 30 days days to two years The different density and composition of mixture will result in different degradation rate, higher density will take longer time to deteriorate and vice versa, so the idea is to take the diffusion/erosion into the experiential qualities of the public spaces
Extensive use: flooring, footwear, aero-industry, wall panelling, furniture design, from micro to macro scale
Water as medium; public platform to favor interactivity--> water floating devices to transfer edible products through the water bodies
Freshly harvested cork and with chemical treatment and processing
Freshly harvested cork+recycled cork from any industry+ biological/food residue like coconut fiber, dried coffee ground as additive to mixture: allow experimentation

The prototype is to create a single-run arch and instead of creating the curve profile before heating, the methodology is to generate a bendable and flexible prototype that can be folded into shapes
Mix Agar & Cornstarch with water, add glycerol & cork
1THE WATER TRANSIT from canal profile to the sea is a critical moment to the speed of flow and-sedimentation rate so there will be less filter module in the river mouth to allow the smooth water run 2ARCHES& different form of prototypes will insert and connected with the platform in both nail-screw techniques or tongue and groove joints 3PLANTS are expected to grow at their own rates and with the suggestion(from time line) is comparatively adaptable and evergreen species, local plantation(like tomato industry) can be considered The resulted product retained a certain level of malleability and flexibility for turning into an arch.
Heat the mixture until it thickens and bubble begins Pour into mold or just a plane+rapid heating with microwave/oven Drying time depends on ventilation of mold & temperature/humidity of plane

IMPERMEABLE TO LIQUIDS AND GASES Thanks to the suberin and ceroids contained in the cell walls, cork is practically impermeable to liquids and gases. Its resistance to moisture enables it to age without deteriorating.
NATURAL TOUCH The natural texture of cork combines softness and flexibility to the touch with a naturally uneven surface. The variable degree of irregularity is given by the type of cork used and the finish chosen. VERY LIGHT Over 50% of its volume is air, which makes it very light - it weighs just 0.16 grams per cubic cm and can float.
HIGHLY ABRASION RESISTANT Cork is extremely resistant to abrasion and has a high friction coefficient, constructed a Territorial habitat.

‘Time for the next journey: the sensical maker city’ KEYWORD: SPECULATIVE DESIGN, EXPO, THRESHOLD, LIMINAL SPACE LOCATION: SEOUL, KOREA
Background: In the aftermath of Korea unification in the year of 2050, along with waves of social discrimination and decay of habitation has left the city in a perpetual state of identity loss. It is a high time for self-actualization, city can act as socially/ physically jointed parts, connect the urban fragment and create significant impact on quality of movement and social life. The use of architecture as cultural identifiers and mediators responds to the age of instantaneous access to information and mass media; The monument served as a threshold to connect the program.

KEYWORD: PNEUMATIC STRUCTURE,ITERATIVE DESIGN, DIGITAL EXERIMENTATION LOCATION: ALONG THE MERRI CREEK, MELBOURNE
The design is a pop-up inflatable installation that will ‘flow’ along the Merri Creek in Melbourne, Australia. The studio focused on scripting the quality or behavior of specific feral species - feral pigs across Australia, and to explore the possibilities of different architectural intent and exciting outcomes. New relation between individual experience associated with mental qualities and community discovery based on movable infrastructure that could be adapted to environment with constant transformation, It is designed with careful consideration of ergonomic and anthropometric dimension and enable particular ‘body parts’ to be separated and moved around which demonstrates sense of playfulness and fluid application for users.

FERAL PIGS ACTIVITIES
In view of the Rushall’s habitat conditions: abundance of resource, pig density(data base), movement and damage pattern, trapping is considered to be the most appropriate technique. It is a valuable and effective way to control the number and minimise their extent of activity zone in a humane manner.
Rushall, a relatively self-contained small neighborhood, situated in the lower course of the Creek, deliberately establish a invisible network within.

To humanize the structure into a modest scale. Partial section of the model are extracted here and demonstrated its potential for a seating approach. Not only to inherit the bodily sitting mechanisms, but also the need to accommodate the complex ‘sedentary to nomadic’ modern life in searching of a high level of comfort. Our physical wellbeing, enjoyment and efficiency are dependent on how we occupy and the feeling of the occupancy. There is multiplicity of ways of sitting: here our target is sitting for reading, for relaxation; sitting in casual gatherings, in public assembly, each way of sitting has specific characteristics, resulting in distinctive design logic.

Spatial conception of space is explored to understand the relatedness of visual, physical and perceptual qualities of spaces for users. The exercise is to look for experiencable and habitable interior spaces. Instead of merely focusing on vertical and horizontal connection, diagonal relationships created by slope or ramps abstract the volume of the space and can incorporate with furnishing to allow dynamic usage of area.

To make spaces more functional and practical, in terms of furniture, we have put a lot of efforts on designing the shelf. It is not only helping with the storage but we are also hoping to bring residents into the design. The structure of the shelves are fixed but the layout will be assembled by residents so they can create their version of a useful stoarge shelf. Shelf can be found in almost all the communal spaces, they are featured as followed:
Light Storage

Reading/ Playing Area
We think a design that can boost creativity and reading habits of kids are of paramount importance. Here, the introduction of black board and magnetic white board can provide numerous opportunities for the kids to sketch, to present their idea, and while the staff and parents can utilised them as display board or set reminder. In addition, there is a small reading corner and we hope that there is a indicative place for the children to be comfortably sit down and enjoy their precious reading time.

VITAMIN B - TERRACE
Integrated Green Space
To make terrace a more pleasant space to stay at, we suggest the introduction of an integrated green space. By planting herbs and vines on particular part of the balcony, the healing effect of the plantations will eventually improve the intellectual well-being of residents. To make this green space feasible, drip type system is recommended. This system is durable, delicate and transparent. Whatsmore, it helps mitigating strong sunlight during summer and regenerate vividness in the terrace floor.

CHAIN DESIGN FOR SIMPLE DRAINAGE water will drip off from the climber plants to the floor water collection smalll tanks
Interactive Wall
There is a extended wooden plank shading projected from the existing “ceiling”, this provides shading effects. We provide a grid system of hook which residents can hang objects. On special occasion or festival, residents can hang objects on the hooks. For instance, during Mid-Autumn Festival, lanterns can be hanged.
This is a play structure for children and also a seating space for adults. Instead of just adding benches, we designed a structure which can serves as seat area for adults plus a climbing structure for children.

The stairs does not only serve as connection to the attic but also a shelf. As this room is served for multi functions so it needs more storage to put documents, tools or even some machines. The depth is of the shelf is 0.5 meters and the height is based on the stairs’ height.
The chairs at the room are in the shape of boxes, it made up of boards. It is lightweight and practical. Each chair also serves as a storage box. Therefore, chairs can be moved around flexibly to make this room functions as a lecture place/classroom for workshop.
Shelf is one of the core scheme from our concept. We hope residents can be involved in the design process, the layout of the shelf is decided by them. Therefore, they can change the positions of some slab to make storage more practical. Some baskets are provided to store small items, each basket is with different colours to make the room to look more playful.
Attic
The attic is designed to serve as a relaxation and resting area. To ensure the room does not feel oppressed, net is used at particular area, it allows higher transparency between two levels. At the same time, it brings better playfulness and comfortability to the attic. The net will be made up of rope as it is durable and strong.

To make farming more interesting, the functions added to the plant pots include benches and small table. Also, the rooftop appears to be too sunny so we add some umbrella holders for residents to insert umbrella in. This is for short stay on the roof, when there is carnival residents can set up shading. For night time, we have designed some shared pot that is luminous. Shared luminous pot will be located randomly with the plant pot. B KYOTO RYOZEN HOTEL
The project is a new hybrid of efficient hotel system and authentic Japanese Ryokan concept. The main study is to explore the clean and modern identity in timber joinery structure while respecting the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture details. To express the beauty of traditional japanese architectural details, this project examined the use of thin profile taruki(rafter) and techniques of To-kyou(wooden cantilever).
I mainly helped with the detail design of the project including experimenting different timber configuration to the main entrance, driveway entrance and hot spring pavilion, in terms of both 3d and physical modelling.
