In this highly anticipated world premiere based on one of China’s greatest classic novels, a young nobleman must choose between his spiritual soulmate and a beautiful heiress. Sung in English, the opera features a lush, lyrical score by composer Bright Sheng, a poetic libretto co-written with Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang and designs by Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Verdi’s grand Egyptian epic is the setting for an intimate love story about a military hero and an Ethiopian slave girl. The tragic conflict between their passionate love and patriotic duty unfolds in a series of gripping confrontations in Verdi’s dramatic score. This opera returns in a bold new production inspired by contemporary L.A. visual artist RETNA, one of today’s most celebrated graffiti artists.

Puccini’s emotionally charged music takes the audience on a journey through innocence, betrayal and sacrifice towards a heartbreaking finale. Following her magnificent debut as Tosca in 2014, Lianna Haroutounian returns to bring her “opulent, heart-stealing Cio-Cio-San” (Opera Today) to San Francisco in artist Jun Kaneko’s inventive production.

A curse shatters the lives of the hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto and his innocent daughter Gilda. This fast-moving tale of seduction, deception and bitter revenge overflows with magnificent melodies and intense dramatic action. Anna Caterina Antonacci returns in an intimate performance featuring a selection of French art songs and Poulenc’s one-woman opera La Voix humaine. In this explosive work, Antonacci is “alternately cajoling, charming, frantic and exhausted” (The New York Times) as a desperate woman on the phone with her soon-to-be ex-lover. Tickets to The Source and La Voix humaine on sale summer 2016. The Source was commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects and Judy and Allen Freedman, with additional commissioning support from Justus and Helen Schlichting.
