2020 –21
WELCOME TO THE 2020 –21 SEASON! From the appointment of Eun Sun Kim as the Caroline H. Hume Music Director, to an exciting new Opening Night Celebration and a very special mid-October Opera in the Park, to a stunning mix of new discoveries and familiar favorites on the War Memorial Opera House stage, the 2020–21 Season is a season of bold new directions for San Francisco Opera. I am so happy to share that, in preparation for our 2021–22 Season and our centennial in 2022, we are installing brand new seats in the theater from June to August 2021. For the 2020–21 Season only, we will present Opera in the Park in October and our last three offerings of the season in April and May 2021. I look forward to sharing more about this significant improvement to your patron experience over the coming months. Opera’s combination of the human voice, soaring music, and gripping stories provides some of the most transformative experiences imaginable. This season, I invite you to take a moment away from the day-to-day and step into the extraordinary, the thrilling, and the deeply emotional. Join us and feel ALIVE.

rrested. Tortured. Presumed dead. Two years ago, Leonora's husband disappeared into the depths of a detention facility run by his political enemy. Now, the only way to discover if he's alive is for Leonora to infiltrate the prison disguised as a man. Beethoven's only opera pulses with musical brilliance and revolutionary fervor, reaffirming the human right to life and liberty. Director Matthew Ozawa brings Beethoven's inspiring anthem of freedom to the modern era through the lens of the global detention center crisis. Music Director Designate Eun Sun Kim conducts an acclaimed cast headed by soprano Elza van den Heever as Leonora, one of opera’s most heroic roles. The cast also features tenor Simon O’Neill and a thrilling trio of bass-baritones: Falk Struckmann, Eric Owens, and Alfred Walker.

s the court jester, Rigoletto’s job is to entertain the Duke of Mantua, usually at the expense of powerful members of the court. When he is cursed for a taunt that cuts too deep, a terrible sequence of events is set in motion, threatening his only treasure in life: his daughter. Propelled by Verdi’s turbulent music, this fast-paced work explores the human heart, both at its most tender and vengeful. Sir Mark Elder conducts an international cast headed by Georgian baritone George Gagnidze who brings his commanding portrayal of the title role to San Francisco for the first time. Samoan-born tenor Pene Pati returns after his acclaimed performances in Romeo and Juliet to reprise the role of the Duke opposite Armenian soprano Nina Minasyan who makes her American debut as Gilda.

ollowing 2019's smash-hit The Marriage of Figaro comes the second installment of Director Michael Cavanagh’s Mozart and Da Ponte trilogy.
We are now in 1930s America, and Figaro's revolutionary-era manor has become a country club where members flaunt the latest in Hollywood style and fitness trends. A couple of club members engage in a playful bet about the fidelity of their partners. Testing the limits of loyalty and forgiveness, Così fan tutte puts love on trial in this bittersweet comedy where affections become entangled and confused. n a dystopian future, fertile women deemed sinful are forced into child-bearing servitude by an extremist theocratic regime. Resistance is nearly impossible — but necessary.
A landmark literary work, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is a searing projection of America in a post-democratic reign of terror. Grammy-nominated composer Poul Ruders’ acclaimed operatic adaptation makes its West Coast premiere in an incisive new production by John Fulljames that takes us on a powerful journey into the harrowing depths of a society where humanity is ritually denied. Sasha Cooke stars as the handmaid Offred, who navigates the reality of her existence with savvy and courage. uccini’s portrayal of love and loss among a group of struggling artists has won over hearts for more than a century. Infused with melodies of unforgettable intimacy, buoyancy, and pathos, La Bohème remains one of the most heart-wrenching emotional experiences on the opera stage. Two casts of acclaimed international artists will star in the production. Italian soprano Maria Agresta makes her Company debut as Mimì opposite Michael Fabiano as Rodolfo, with Amina Edris and Artur Ruciński as Musetta and Marcello. The second cast features Aurelia Florian, Arturo Chacón-Cruz, Janai Brugger, and Anthony Clark Evans as the bohemians. Former San Francisco Opera Music Director Nicola Luisotti brings passion and vitality to the world of the Parisian artists, with Shawna Lucey directing John Caird’s beloved production.
