I find that the powerful drama in Billy Budd comes from the claustrophobia of emotions unable to be shared. This production exemplifies that, pulling us into the confines of a ship’s hull with intense impact.
W
hen young Billy is pressed into naval service aboard the H.M.S. Indomitable, the recruit’s youth and innocence arouse devotion from the crew, but a commanding officer’s suspicions and dark desire threaten to throw order into chaos. With the rising threat of mutiny, duty and rank are pitted against truth and morality in Britten’s tempestuous masterpiece based on the novella by Herman Melville. Tony Award-winner Michael Grandage takes the audience deep into the claustrophobic atmosphere below and above deck as Britten’s score brings to life the surging energy of the sea. The all-male cast is headed by William Burden as Captain Vere, Christian Van Horn as John Claggart and, in his Company debut, baritone John Chest in the title role.

The Marriage of Figaro has been called a perfect opera—an irresistible mix of comedy and drama that delivers insight into the heart and soul of everyday life through a sublime score and compelling characters. This brand-new production, built by San Francisco Opera specifically for the War Memorial Opera House stage, is the launch of a thrilling trilogy of the operas by Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. Director Michael Cavanagh (Susannah), will take us on a three-year journey through The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni as we explore the essence of the human condition as seen through the lens of a great American house. Henrik Nánási returns from his critically acclaimed debut with Elektra to conduct Mozart’s beloved score.

But in a world where tradition and loyalty rule, can an outlawed love win? Director Jose Maria Condemi helms a beautiful production steeped in the lush ambiance of the Spanish Renaissance. Following his triumph in Roberto Devereux, Russell Thomas stars alongside rising sensation Michelle Bradley as the opera’s renegade lovers. James Gaffigan returns to conduct Verdi’s propulsive score.

Full Series (except R/R+RBW) can drop up to two operas and Half Series (except S/RBW, T and W) can drop one opera.
HELPFUL HINTS Select a second choice for your seating section, in case your first choice is not available. New subscriptions, subscription change requests, early exchanges, Design Your Own Series subscriptions and additional tickets are sold unseated. Seats are not likely to be the same as your original subscription seats. Performances dropped or exchanged at the time of order will be permanently released from your series. Exchanges are subject to availability; any additional ticket price differential will apply. Checks will be deposited immediately and credit cards will be charged for the full value of your first choice or the full value of your first payment if you have chosen a payment plan. This is not a guarantee of seating. If your final seat assignment is your alternate choice, we will automatically refund or charge the difference due, as appropriate. If we cannot seat you in any of your choices, we will contact you to discuss an alternate zone, seat, package or a full refund.
