DE AR OPER A LOVER, For the first time in a decade I will not be with you this season, though I was intimately involved in its planning. The good news is that with Matthew Shilvock, the Company could not be in better hands窶馬ot only in this season, but in fashioning his own future seasons with adventurousness and impeccable taste. Our mainstage season includes a world premiere (Dream of the Red Chamber), three new productions (Andrea Chテゥnier, Don Pasquale and Aida), a reconceived staging of Don Giovanni and four beautifully cast revivals. I am also pleased to introduce SF Opera Lab, a new area of programming designed to better accommodate the tastes of our ever-growing, diversifying audience. SF Opera Lab kicks off its inaugural season this March next door at the exquisite Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater. Thank you for the support and enthusiasm you have extended to me over this last decade. I could never have done this job without you. May opera continue to prosper in this great city! An ardent poet and a young noblewoman are passionately attracted only to be separated by the turmoil and terror of the French Revolution. Soaring arias and turbulent crowd scenes seethe with the energy of the period’s unbridled emotions. In one of the most thrilling finales in all of opera, the doomed lovers mount the scaffold together in defiant proclamation of their love. Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts this powerful, melodic score in a lavish period production by acclaimed director David McVicar. Yonghoon Lee, hailed by The New York Times as an “outstanding tenor with a melting sound,” debuts in the title role. Also making their Company debuts are the exciting Italian soprano Anna Pirozzi as Maddalena and the commanding baritone George Gagnidze as the vengeful Gérard.

Considered one of China’s greatest classical novels, Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber is the source for this highly anticipated world premiere. Often referred to as The Story of the Stone, this classic tale—as famous in China as Romeo and Juliet is in the West—recounts the love triangle between a young nobleman and two very different women: one his spiritual soulmate, the other a beautiful heiress. Featuring a libretto co-authored by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), this new English-language opera is by Bright Sheng, one of the most important Chinese-American composers today. Acclaimed Taiwanese director and playwright Stan Lai joins forces with Tim Yip, the Academy Awardwinning designer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to bring this visionary work to life. George Manahan conducts the lyrical score.

Sparkling with virtuosic singing and playful humor, Donizetti’s boisterous comedy pits the miserly Don Pasquale against his nephew Ernesto and Ernesto’s sweetheart, the crafty young widow Norina. Moments of romantic sweetness punctuate the farcical fun as Norina schemes to embarrass Don Pasquale and marry Ernesto. Known for “refreshing every role he touches” (The New Yorker), American tenor Lawrence Brownlee makes his long-awaited Company debut alongside the always dazzling Heidi Stober and charismatic Lucas Meachem. Italian bass Maurizio Muraro brings his comedic genius to the title role in Laurent Pelly’s fanciful production. Giuseppe Finzi conducts.

Verdi’s grand Egyptian epic is the setting for an intimate love story about the military hero Radames and an Ethiopian slave girl, Aida. The tragic conflict between their passionate love and patriotic duty unfolds in a series of gripping confrontations set to Verdi’s gloriously dramatic music. Francesca Zambello joins visionary set designer Michael Yeargan to create a bold new production inspired by contemporary L.A. visual artist RETNA. One of the hottest graffiti artists today, RETNA combines elements of traditional street art with hieroglyphics and Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy. Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts San Francisco Opera favorites soprano Leah Crocetto and tenor Brian Jagde in their role debuts as Aida and Radames. Cultures clash when a trusting young geisha marries an American naval officer stationed in Nagasaki. Puccini’s gut-wrenching music takes the audience on an emotionally charged journey through innocence, betrayal and sacrifice towards a heartbreaking finale. Lianna Haroutounian, with a “voice full of character and vitality” (Tosca, San Francisco Classical Voice), sings the title role in Jun Kaneko’s compelling production that “raises the bar of how Madame Butterfly can be staged to previously unimaginable heights” (San Francisco Examiner).

SUMMER 2017: MAY 31 JUN 6, 9, 14, 18m, 22, 27 • JUL 1
A curse shatters the lives of the hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto and his innocent daughter Gilda. This fast-moving tale of seduction, betrayal and bitter revenge overflows with magnificent melodies and intense dramatic action. With its startling contrasts of villainy and tenderness, Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s most memorable creations. Three widely heralded artists lead the cast: rich-voiced baritone Quinn Kelsey, praised by San Francisco Chronicle for his “effortless power and vibrant color,” dazzling soprano Nino Machaidze and tenor Pene Pati. Maestro Nicola Luisotti infuses this classic masterpiece with “breathless urgency” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Suggestions and Notes About Your Order Select a second choice for your seating section, in case your first choice is not available. New subscriptions, subscription change requests, early exchanges and add-on tickets are assigned seats after the renewal deadline, March 7, not at the time of order. Seats are not likely to be the same as your original subscription seats. Performances dropped or exchanged at the time of order will be permanently released from your series. Checks will be deposited immediately and credit cards will be charged for the full value of your first choice or the full value of your first payment if you have chosen a payment plan. This is not a guarantee of seating. If your final seat assignment is your alternate choice, we will automatically refund or charge the difference due, as appropriate.
We will do our best to accommodate seating requests, but we cannot guarantee the availability of seating in any section or price level. If we cannot seat you in any of your choices, we will contact you to discuss an alternate section, seat, package or a full refund. Seating priority is based upon subscription and contribution history, with greater consideration given to contributions. For information, please call (415) 551-6318. If you have specific seating requests, including accessibility needs, please contact the Box Office.
If you do not receive an acknowledgment of your order by email or mail within 14 days, please call the Box Office. Cast, programs, prices and schedules are subject to change. All orders are final. No refunds or returns. A $1 per-ticket facility fee is included in Balcony 1, 2 and 3 section prices; all other sections include a $2 per-ticket facility fee. A $15 subscription handling fee is charged per order. Design Your Own Series will be available in May 2016.
Assistive listening devices for hearing-impaired patrons are available at North and South lobby coat checks. Headsets that provide a spoken version of the projected supertitles are available at all performances.
