Considered one of China’s greatest classical novels, Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber is the source for this highly anticipated world premiere. Often referred to as The Story of the Stone, this heartbreaking tale—as famous in China as Romeo and Juliet is in the West—recounts the love triangle between a young nobleman and two very different women: one his spiritual soulmate, the other a beautiful heiress. This new English-language opera by Bright Sheng, one of the most important Chinese-American composers today, features a libretto co-authored with Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly). Acclaimed Taiwanese director and playwright Stan Lai joins forces with Tim Yip, the Academy Award-winning Chinese designer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to bring this visionary work to life. George Manahan conducts the lyrical score. With Pureum Jo*, Yijie Shi*, Nian Wang, Qiulin Zhang*, Hyona Kim*, Karen Chia-Ling Ho* and Yanyu Guo; Conductor George Manahan; Director Stan Lai*.

Cultures clash when a trusting young geisha marries an American naval officer stationed in Nagasaki. Puccini’s emotionally charged music takes the audience on a journey through innocence, betrayal and sacrifice towards a heartbreaking finale. Following her magnificent debut as Tosca in fall 2014, Lianna Haroutounian returns to bring her “opulent, heart-stealing Cio-Cio-San” (Opera Today) to San Francisco. Jun Kaneko’s compelling production “raises the bar of how Madame Butterfly can be staged to previously unimaginable heights” (San Francisco Examiner). A curse shatters the lives of the hunchbacked court jester Rigoletto and his innocent daughter Gilda. This fast-moving tale of seduction, deception and bitter revenge overflows with magnificent melodies and intense dramatic action. With its startling contrasts of villainy and tenderness, Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s most memorable creations. Three widely heralded artists lead the cast: rich-voiced baritone Quinn Kelsey, praised by San Francisco Chronicle for his “effortless power and vibrant color,” dazzling soprano Nino Machaidze and tenor Pene Pati. Maestro Nicola Luisotti infuses this classic masterpiece with “breathless urgency” (San Francisco Chronicle). THE SOURCE

LA VOIX HUMAINE

Ted Hearne Text by Mark Doten Winter 2017: Feb 24, 25, 26 Mar 1, 2, 3

Francis Poulenc Text by Jean Cocteau Winter 2017: Mar 11, 14, 17

Within a fever-dream assemblage of twitter feeds, news reports, declassified video and court testimony, four singers explore the media hysteria surrounding Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning who infamously leaked hundreds of classified documents. Named one of the best classical music recordings of 2015 by The New York Times.

Anna Caterina Antonacci returns in an intimate performance featuring a sample of French art songs and Poulenc’s one-woman opera La Voix humaine. In this explosive work Antonacci is “alternately cajoling, charming, frantic and exhausted” (The New York Times) as a desperate woman on the phone with her soon to be ex-lover.

At the Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater, Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera, 401 Van Ness Avenue, fourth floor. Subscriber additional ticket discount does not apply to SF Opera Lab performances. The Source was commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects and Judy and Allen Freedman, with additional commissioning support from Justus and Helen Schlichting.
