ARRIGO BOITO Libretto by the composer
The season kicks off with Boito’s resplendent retelling of Goethe’s Faust, a monumental work of “choral grandeur and melodic richness” (The New York Times) in one of the most impressive productions ever seen at the War Memorial Opera House. The cast includes Ramón Vargas, a tenor “in ravishing voice” (Financial Times), as the philosopher who sells his soul to the Devil; the “luminous, compelling” Patricia Racette (Washington Post) as the woman he desires; and, in the vividly menacing title role, the “seductively malevolent” bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov, a “fullbodied bass-baritone” renowned for his “wonderfully evil portrayals” (The New York Times). Our own Italian maestro will be on the podium, showing once again why “we are blessed to have Nicola Luisotti in San Francisco” (San Francisco Classical Voice). SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRODUCTION

DOLORA ZAJICK
Dolores Claiborne An opera by TOBIAS PICKER Libretto by J. D. McCLATCHY · By arrangement with ANDREW WELCH
·
Based on the novel Dolores Claiborne by STEPHEN
KING
Commissioned by SAN FRANCISCO OPERA
Desperate. Passionate. Trapped. Dolores Claiborne is willing to do whatever it takes to save herself and her daughter—even if that means taking a life. One of the most compelling characters to emerge from the imagination of Stephen King, the feisty Maine housekeeper is a natural fit for opera—and specifically for the dark theatricality of American composer Tobias Picker, who “embraces opera as a populist art form” and “does so with undeniable skill” (The New York Times). Memorably played by Kathy Bates in the 1995 movie, Dolores will be sung by the powerhouse mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, who brings to her roles “the kind of explosive dramatic intensity that makes her an unforgettable stage presence” (San Francisco Chronicle). This chilling work features a libretto by poet J. D. McClatchy. “Expert conductor” George Manahan is at the podium (Financial Times) and the “imaginative” and “inspired” James Robinson directs (The Wall Street Journal).

GIUSEPPE VERDI · Libretto by Arrigo Boito Bryn Terfel, the “definitive” Falstaff of our day (Chicago Tribune), returns to San Francisco Opera in one of his truly legendary roles. Based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV, Verdi’s last opera is a wise, wistful comedy about a self-deluded old man who vainly attempts to seduce two women at once. “Terfel is so irascible, nimble on his feet and altogether charming that he almost makes you forget how splendidly he sings the music” (The New York Times). Music Director Nicola Luisotti leads a cast that also features Ainhoa Arteta, the “vocally alluring” Roxane of San Francisco Opera’s Cyrano de Bergerac (2010) (San Francisco Chronicle); the “impressive” Meredith Arwady (The New York Times); Fabio Capitanucci, renowned for his “robust, warm voice and impressive Italianate lyricism” (The New York Times); the “wonderfully lyrical” Francesco Demuro (MusicalCriticism.com) and Heidi Stober, who brought “lustrous tone, technical precision and saucy humor” to her roles in San Francisco Opera’s Xerxes (2011) and The Magic Flute (2012) (San Francisco Chronicle).

RICHARD WAGNER · Libretto by the composer
In Wagner’s first masterpiece, a ship’s captain is condemned to endlessly travel the seas under a curse that can only be broken by a woman’s love. This mythic tale of bleak isolation and the promise of salvation will be told through inventive imagery, conveying a distinct sense of the supernatural. The “masterful” Patrick Summers (Houston Chronicle) conducts a cast of outstanding Wagnerians led by Greer Grimsley, who thrilled San Francisco Opera audiences as “a thunderous and dramatically compelling Jokanaan” in 2009’s Salome (San Francisco Chronicle), and Petra Maria Schnitzer, who sings with “creamy tone, lyrical grace (a rarity in Wagner) and earthy top notes” (The New York Times). Petrika Ionesco, who brought “a handsome combination of grandeur and expressive intimacy” (San Francisco Chronicle) to Cyrano de Bergerac (2010), directs a production he has also designed. Presented in celebration of the Wagner bicentennial year.

GIOACHINO ROSSINI · Libretto by Cesare Sterbini
With the help of a wily barber, a strong-willed young woman outwits a lecherous old man in this eternally fresh comic masterpiece featuring Rossini’s wittiest, most charming score and two charismatic casts. One features Isabel Leonard, “a lively stage presence and a radiant lyric voice” (The New York Times); Lucas Meachem, who displayed “vocal brilliance” and “theatrical panache” in the title role of San Francisco Opera’s Don Giovanni (2011) (San Francisco Chronicle); and rising tenor Javier Camarena, praised by Opera News for his “exquisite finesse.” The other equally stunning cast features Daniela Mack, who sings Rossini “with technical command and expressive ease” (Opera News); the “smooth-voiced” Audun Iversen (The New York Times) and Alek Shrader, who sang Tamino in San Francisco Opera’s The Magic Flute (2012) with “clarity and sweetness of tone” (San Francisco Chronicle). Resident Conductor Giuseppe Finzi, who leads the San Francisco Opera Orchestra with “vigor and clarity” (San Francisco Chronicle), returns to the podium.

ShowBoat Music by JEROME KERN · Book and lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II Based on the novel Show Boat by EDNA FERBER
A true classic of American musical theater, this tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism. Director Francesca Zambello’s grand-scale production is “a triumph—a stylish, fast-paced and colorful show that had the capacity audience on its feet, cheering loud and long” (Chicago Classical Review). The magnificent Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II score, which includes such classic songs as “Ol’ Man River” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” will sound glorious “under the authoritative baton of music-theater maestro John DeMain” (Chicago Tribune). Patricia Racette, Heidi Stober and Nathan Gunn head a dazzling cast. “No one should miss it” (Chicago Sun-Times). COMPANY PREMIERE

La Traviata GIUSEPPE V ERDI · Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave
Violetta Valéry may be the most heart-wrenching character in all of opera: a high-spirited but deceptively delicate woman who unexpectedly finds, and then selflessly gives up, the love of her all-too-short life. Her story will be brought to the stage by two spectacular casts. One features “dusky and sensual” 2010 Operalia winner Sonya Yoncheva, who “oozes star quality” (The Independent, London); tenor Saimir Pirgu is Violetta’s lover Alfredo, whose depiction of the role is “right on vocally as well as dramatically” (Associated Press); and Vladimir Stoyanov, praised by The New York Times for his “warm, attractive voice.” The other is led by Ailyn Pérez, whose performance of the role at London’s Royal Opera House was hailed as “an unalloyed triumph” (The Guardian, London); Stephen Costello, “an ascending voice in opera” with an “engaging, pure voice” (Philadelphia Inquirer); and the “triumphant” and “splendid” Quinn Kelsey (San Francisco Chronicle).

Puccini’s heartbreaking tale of innocence, betrayal and sacrifice returns in a bold and beautiful production by Jun Kaneko, designer of San Francisco Opera’s dazzling production of The Magic Flute (2012). Patricia Racette, “who can rightly stand among the great Butterflies of her era” (Opera News), heads a superb cast including Elizabeth DeShong, acclaimed by The New York Times for her “rich, nuanced portrayal” of Butterfly’s maid Suzuki; Brian Jagde, who “supplied what so many other tenors on today’s main stage lack: soul” (San Francisco Classical Voice); and Brian Mulligan, a baritone with a “rich, secure” voice who is “capable of sensitivity and musicality in perfectly executed moments” (The New York Times). “The visual component of this production is so compelling, and so intelligent, that it lifts this opera to a new level” (Toronto Globe and Mail). OPERAVISION IN THE BALCONY Select performances feature high-definition video projection screens on the Balcony level, bringing audiences closer to the action on stage. Subtitles are shown at the bottom of each screen. Visit sfopera.com/operavision. To experience OperaVision at every opera in your series, choose Series M, R, R+RBW, RBW, N, O or S (look for the symbol). OperaVision is made possible by the Koret-Taube Media Suite. Direct your annual support to things you are most passionate about: media outreach, opera education or Adler Fellowships. Become an affiliate sponsor and fund an artistic component of a single production: costumes, chorus, orchestra and more. Call Judith Frankel at (415) 551-6226 for details.
LEGACY GIVING Remember San Francisco Opera in your estate plan. Endowment and legacy giving can provide financial advantages to you, while helping to ensure the future of San Francisco Opera, and provide a cushion of support during challenging economic times. Call Mark Jones at (415) 565-3206 for details.
In keeping with IRS regulations, the fair-market value of certain membership benefits and privileges may reduce tax deductibility. The value of these benefits will be noted in San Francisco Opera’s acknowledgement of your gift. Per IRS guidelines, contributions received through IRAs or donor advised funds are not eligible for benefits. Please call Andy Maguire at (415) 551-6318 with any questions. Photos by Drew Altizer

A note about how we process your order: Checks will be deposited immediately and credit cards will be charged for the full value of your first choice or the full value of your first payment if you have chosen a payment plan.
