Exploration; Carving plaster of paris, B.Arch - Sem II 2016

This is one of the first times I explored hand-building and carving and enjoyed the process. The exercise focused on creating spaces while exploring the new medium of plaster of paris. The intent was to design variations of spaces and connect them together in an experiential manner. The 30x30cm cube was cast and carved to create quality spaces that are interconnected yet distinct from one another. This is where I began to discover my passion.

Having begun with the idea of recycling paper into handcrafted papers for lanterns, I explored various mediums including Resin and Clay amidst the pandemic. A fun experiment evolved into a successful business with a growing customer base. In the end, all of this brought me to a realization and an interest in learning more about clay as a medium and its techniques.

The scale up project

March 2022 - July 2022

With my interest in these explorations in clay, I decided on attending “Exploring Art and Craft of Clay” a 4-month foundation course at Claystation studio in Bangalore which incorporates all the hand building and wheel throwing techniques, surface decoration methods, principles of glaze application as well as studio management skills.

This project brief was to create a scaled-up project on any topic but with a minimum height of 13 inches. Personally, I believe the changes in the world along COVID-19 led me to the path of clay. I decided to create a lamp that conceptually shows the positive impacts of COVID on my life and extract that idea as a part of the proposal. The lamp thus used multiple elements that begin to form links to the period of lockdown. For eg, the masks and the virus culminate in a flower made of masks. Also indicating a new beginning. The method used in making this lamp was a hand-building method and is made with the help of stoneware clay.

Exploration 1

March 2022 - July 2022

The brief here spoke about choosing a listed emotion and creating a nonfunctional abstract form for it. I chose the emotion “Shanta” i.e tranquil. Living in the chaotic city of Mumbai all my life, the beach was a niche that always allowed me to feel peaceful and connected to myself. The sounds of the waves were relaxing and engaging at the same time. Thus making this choice was influenced by my memories back in Mumbai and reminiscing about the ocean. Research revealed that an ocean drum mimics the sound of waves. Consequently, I decided to include it in my design.

The brief here was to design a ramen bowl for a high-end Japanese restaurant by taking inspiration from any locally available leaves or flowers. The flower “Pride of India” is the one I chose as my inspiration while walking the streets of Bangalore as it reminded me of the Japanese cherry blossoms. My design was also influenced by Japanese brush strokes. The bowl was created in dark-bodied clay and covered with white slips.

Exploration 3 March 2022 - July 2022

The brief was to combine two of the listed forms together to create an amalgamation of the same. The work below is a fusion of a moon jar and a plate. The final form was inspired by my dad’s wild-life photography; the wings of a bird during its flight. This sculpture is textured with paper clay to give the feathered body effect.

The brief called for selecting a form and altering its function while retaining its essence. Using terracotta clay, I transformed a cup into a hanging lamp.

This brief talks about designing and creating a range of products around a space or an event that we/people experience and are a part of. The collection included up to five products that serve the purpose of the specific space or event. The space chosen was an art studio. I decided to give a theme to these projects which were inspired by Indian miniature Mughal paintings.

The course culminated in a successful exhibition called ‘Arangetrum”. It was the student’s showcase/sale through which emerged my brand name Studio Nika-San.

During my internship had the chance to do small-scale hand-made production of cups, bowls, platters, boxes, and tiles and also to create a terracotta mural with another artist. The mural was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and a celebration of the earthy material itself. There are two enlarged cups in the centre that depict Gandhiji’s spectacle from a top view. Using different textures and overlapping pots and vessels, these abstract pieces depict different lands (states) of India, which are connected by pottery.

Studio Nika-San

From November 2022

During my internship, I tried Raku firing. My goal was to create a unique set of table lamps. I sketched a lot of ideas because the architectural features of Kund and organic spaces intrigued me. As a set, I created a larger and smaller version of the same design. Raku firing was a great learning experience.
