GRADUATION with a twist!
In 2022, the San Jacinto College softball team competed in their regional tournament on Friday, May 13 – the same date and time as spring commencement. To recognize the teammates who missed their graduation and to celebrate with their families, the South Campus held a ceremony just for them. Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor; Dr. Allatia Harris, San Jacinto College vice chancellor, strategic initiatives; and Dr. Aaron Knight, South Campus provost along with softball head coach Kelly Saenz and assistant coach Kelsey Walters officiated the ceremony.

Hall of Famer Kelly Saenz enters her 20th season heading the San Jacinto College Coyotes Softball Team at the South Campus.
She has built a respectable program that puts the College on the national radar. Case in point: The San Jac softball squad’s first berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament in 2008. To date, her players have won 63 percent of their games.
Softball has dominated Saenz’s youth and professional career. A Winnipeg shortstop with a power bat, Saenz helped the Smitty’s Midget girls’ division team in 1995 and 1996 to two of three consecutive Canadian championships. For her contributions, she made the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame (2014) and, along with former teammates, the Softball Canada Hall of Fame (2015).
Saenz began her collegiate coaching career with Frank Phillips College’s Lady Plainsmen in 2003. The 1998 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, she holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University and a master’s in health, physical education, and recreation from the University of South Dakota. She and her husband, Mike, live in Houston.

Former San Jacinto College standout pitcher Kelsey (McClain) Walters returns to the San Jac dugout for her 11th year as assistant coach.
During her two years as a San Jac student-athlete, Walters re-wrote the softball record books. Her name appears in each of the pitching records, where she ranks second for most wins in a season (31) and is the record holder for innings pitched (263.33) and batting average against (0.107). She is fourth in strikeouts, tied for second in shutouts, and tied for sixth in ERA.
After graduating from San Jac, Walters went on to a stellar career at McNeese State University. In two years, she guided the Cowboys to a 69-56 record. She played in 37 games, making 20 starts. She was 4-5 as a starting pitcher with a 3.61 ERA.
Walters holds a master’s degree in kinesiology and coaching from Texas Woman’s University. Married since 2014, she and her husband welcomed a daughter in 2015 and a son in 2018.

The Coyotes (43-16) went 3-0 at the Region XIV Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NJCAA Softball World Series. The ladies defeated Paris Junior College, Tyler Junior College, and Bossier Parish Community College to earn their sixth appearance in the national tournament. For the first time in the program’s history, the softball team became back-to- back conference and regional champions.
In the team’s sixth national tournament appearance, San Jac was the 12th seed and ultimately fell to fifth-seed Odessa College 4-1 in seven innings and to fourth-seed Seminole State 9-8 to end the season.
“Even though the championship did not end as we wanted it, the girls fought hard and had a great season,” Kelly Saenz, Coyotes head coach, said. “I am very proud of them and the hard work they put into the season.”

Surrounded by the monuments of history, industries and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age of tomorrow, San Jacinto College has served the citizens of East Harris County, Texas, since 1961. With five campuses and multiple extension centers, including the EDGE Center at the Houston Spaceport, San Jacinto College is the first choice for thousands of students every year. With a simple tuition plan, the College offers a convenient, cost-effective pathway to higher education and the workforce.
San Jac serves local businesses and industries, but at its heart is student success. A recognized leader in the national student completion movement, the College removes completion barriers, enhances student support, and expands academic excellence. Its awards speak for themselves: 2021 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence Finalist with Distinction, 2019 Aspen Prize Top 10 institution, 2017 Aspen Prize Rising Star Award recipient, and Achieving the Dream Leader College.
San Jac offers something for everyone — from diverse academic programs and workforce training to continuing education and innovative partnerships.
Academics: Because all students have unique goals and schedules, San Jac offers courses during the day, evening, and weekend and online. Students may choose from more than 200 degrees and certificates in more than 80 programs. Thanks to solid preparation, students enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year institution ready to succeed.
Workforce: The College develops a skilled, trained workforce in partnership with area industries. Fast-track and stackable credentials, along with comprehensive training programs, meet the workforce need and establish a clear pathway for students to gain immediate employment and progress in their careers.
Continuing Education: Corporate partners enjoy a robust training program through the continuing and professional development division, which also offers leisure learning classes to the general public.
Partnerships: San Jac continues to lead Gulf Coast institutions in grant-funded partnerships and collaboration. These funds support student success through academic programs and initiatives promoting retention/completion, regional workforce training, and scholarships and tuition while creating pathways for middle and high school students to higher education and the workforce.
Whatever path you take at San Jac, you’ll find a friendly community ready to help you achieve your dreams. Students, your success starts here.
