The most precious gifts come from the heart. If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it is how much we miss each other when we can’t be together and how important the human connection is for our wellbeing. It has made us realize the truth of what we’ve always known: the most precious gifts are not the ones we buy, but the ones we give from the heart. May the blessings of peace and the balm of humankindness be yours this Christmas Season and throughout the New Year.

To protect wildlife for future generations, you have to think inside the box. WELCOME TO THE PORT OF TOMORROW. Surrounding the Port, perched high above the ground, are numerous boxes that our local owl species call home. Students and the community follow the owl families on hidden cameras as their eggs hatch and their young learn to y. We affectionately refer to the owls as our “air force” because they provide essential rodent control. And with 96% occupancy, the owl box program has been an ov overwhelming success— a success we look to repeat as we explore new ways to preserve the Port’s vital wildlife.

DIGITAL EDITION

very year we inevitably get to December and every year my mind is boggled at how the year flew by so fast. Especially this last year, marred by uncertainties about our future and historic evidence of epic change. Yet despite what might have felt exhausting or at times mundane, the year trekked on as it always does, not letting anyone escape the wrath of time. And so, yet again, I find us here in December, the end of another year looming just in front of us. Annually, I make a winter bucket list. It’s my way or wrapping up all of the little “to dos” I longed for and haven’t gotten to, but it’s also my way of remembering to embrace the season and not get caught up in the holiday hubbub that can steal our Christmas joy. For me, it’s a conscious mix of tradition and trying something new that makes up my list, in an effort to build lasting memories without getting stuck in a rut—especially after the last couple of years we’ve had, which could be described easily as rut-inducing. So, this holiday season I’ll be embracing what I always do. I’ll be searching out San Joaquin County’s most epic holiday light displays with CaliforniaChristmasLights.com as my guide, I’ll be donating toys to Toys For Tots, purchased on Black Friday on the only commercialized shopping extravaganza I, for some reason I cannot explain, enjoy, and I’ll be hosting a full Christmas dinner with my family. The new parts of my list are still coming together. The craze of ski bikes has got me curious, though I know I’ll need to travel to find the burgeoning trend. And snowshoeing is another adventure I think would serve me well. Regardless of what I land on, I know it’ll be epic—even if I only do it once. If you have ideas – share them with us. I’d love to hear what you do to celebrate the holiday season.

LAST THOUGHTS GET OUT OF TOWN Speaking of travel, while embracing the holiday season is certainly on my list, I know I’ll eventually tire of the cooler temps and be ready to pretend it’s spring again. League, an off-season competition organized by the National Basketball Association and held in Las Vegas. The Kings are more than ready to meet cheering fans at Stockton Arena, with play-by-play analyst Dave “Deuce” Mason, color analyst Morgan “Mo” Ragan, and beloved Mascot Dunkson back in the building. This season marks the first time fans witness Sacramento Kings Legend Bobby Jackson in action as head coach. “With my experience in player development, we are going to work hard and continue to create an atmosphere that allows the players to be successful,” Coach Jackson shares. “The G League is great for both the Sacramento Kings and the Stockton Kings and continuity between our staff and players will be one of our key priorities.” This season, the NBA G League is implementing an innovative structure that includes a 14-game Showcase Cup and a traditional 36-game regular season to create additional excitement and increase competition. After the Showcase Cup, team records will reset and teams will compete in the regular season, followed by the traditional NBA G League Playoffs, where the top six teams in each conference

aking the move from Reno to Stockton in 2018 felt more like coming home to Sacramento’s minor league NBA team. With their parent club close by, the Stockton Kings embarked on a fresh start that solidified their role as a valuable developmental tool and brought new entertainment to the 209. “Our team is made up of many young players who know how to play the game the right way,” Neemias Queta, who plays center on a two-way contract with Sacramento and Stockton, says. “It’s going to be a fun season for everyone coming out to watch. We are going to be running, for sure!” After all, an exciting game is all about energy—something power forward Emanuel Terry is known for. “This will be an impactful season,” he adds. “I’m excited to be here, and with my energy, I believe we can bring a lot of people around!” Though the team hasn’t played in Stockton since March 2020 when the G League season was cut short due to COVID-19 safety measures, Neemias and Emanuel are warmed up and ready. will qualify based solely on their performance in those 36 games. Fans can now purchase a monthly pass that provides access to all home games within a month for a $20 flat fee or purchase singlegame tickets online or at the box office. There are 24 home games this season, with don’t-miss events coming up on December 10 and 11, when the Kings take on the South Bay Lakers—and again in March with games against G League Ignite and Santa Cruz Warriors. The 2021-2022 season is also filled with promotions and theme nights, like the popular Family Feast Night, home to $2 beer, soda, hot dogs, and popcorn every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all season long. Plans to host more events like fan appreciation days throughout the season are in the works. Though the Kings have

called Stockton home for only three years, their impact is evident throughout San Joaquin. The organization is proud to partner with civic leaders, businesses, schools, and nonprofits through programs like Stuff the Bus and Kings Closet at Stagg High School that support local youth in need, and 209 Minutes—an initiative that encourages fans to donate 209 minutes to local nonprofits during the holiday season. With the 2021-22 season in full swing, locals can return that support in the stands. The Kings give residents an opportunity to cheer on NBA stars in the making, like Christian Terrell, a Sacramento native, and Sac State alum. “I am a hometown kid. Being able to be a part of a franchise that I’ve witnessed throughout the years...pretty much all my life...is amazing!”

EXERCISE FOR LIFE DR. RAMIN MANSHADI’S

NEWEST BOOK EXPLORES HOW TO EXERCISE SAFELY

 BY FAITH LEWIS

DECEMBER 2021 | SJMAG.COM

W

hether you’re a long-time fitness enthusiast or just barely clinging to your New Year’s resolution to get back into shape, Stocktonbased sports cardiologist Dr. Ramin Manshadi’s new book can help motivate you to get up and moving. The book, The Wisdom of Exercise Health, aims to educate people on how and why to exercise to ensure all the health benefits of an active lifestyle while reducing the risk of injury.

“As a sport cardiologist and as a practicing cardiologist, I realized many people—both athletes and non-athletes— need education about exercise,” says Dr. Manshadi. “I purposely wrote this to benefit all, from young to old, from athletes to non-athletes, for fit and unfit.” Most of us already know that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but fewer of us know exactly how it impacts the body—because, yes, it goes beyond building muscle and looking good. “The whole idea of this book is to get you motivated to exercise by educating you and proving to you all the benefits from heart to the brain and more,” Dr. Manshadi says. Oftentimes it’s not a question of not wanting to or not knowing we should exercise. It’s simply that we don’t know how to start. It can be overwhelming to start exercising after years and for many the fear of injury is very real. Dr. Manshadi not only provides readers with insights into why to exercise, but he also gives practical advice on how to put this knowledge to use and get the most out of your exercise routine in a safe and manageable way. For starters, he suggests beginning your day with your workout. If exercise is the last thing on your to do list, it’s going to be the first thing you put off until tomorrow. “Also,” he adds, “the serotonin released by exercise in the morning should give you the motivation to get you going in the morning and will carry you the rest of the day.” The Wisdom of Exercise Health was released in August 2021 and can be found at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Walmart, Target, and other booksellers. This follows the 2011 release of Dr. Manshadi’s first book, Wisdom of Heart Health.

TRAVEL

CUT DOWN YOUR OWN TREE BUT MAKE IT SPECIAL  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

C

utting down your own Christmas tree is a favorite tradition for many families, and there are a few ways to do it. Christmas tree farms exist nearby in Murphys, Dixon, Sloughhouse, and Castro Valley, where trees are grown for the sole purpose of getting axed by you. Others, however, choose to escape into the forest and chop down their own wild tree, without the modernization and extra festivities offered at a tree farm.

The Plumas National Forest, which didn’t all burn down contrary to swirling rumors, has acres filled with trees big and small, sparse and full, vibrant green and smelling of pine, or a little brown and more Charlie Brown-esque. To take one home, all you need is a $10 permit. Instead of driving two hours or more before heading back the same way you came, make a weekend of it. Situated in Graeagle, surrounded by the national forest, sits the Chalet View Lodge, a cozy, two-story property boasting family- and dog-friendly loft rooms with picture windows to watch the snowfall, or family cabins with kitchens and other amenities.

other goods on the communal grills (plus, picnic tables). Don’t miss: the hot cocoa. ALSO IN THE FOREST: On a warmer day, a hike on one of Plumas Forest’s trails is ideal for family bonding, but the real fun comes after a hearty storm. Bring snowshoes and traverse the wilderness or grab a few sleds and make a day of it; Chalet View Lodge has free rentals.

PERMISSION GRANTED

It’s illegal to cut down a tree in a national forest without permission. Luckily, it’s easy to get. Tree permits are sold on Recreation.gov. For $10, families can cut down any tree of their choosing (within a few parameters to protect the forest) through December 21. Need more than one tree? Purchase an extra permit. A Christmas tree cutting map (available with permit) shows where to cut. What to avoid: trees less than six inches in diameter. What to bring: your own saw and a good attitude.

DINE: You don’t have to go far to find a meal. Throughout your axeperience, the experts can give pointers, offer insight, or just cheer you on. “A lot of first-time throwers are nervous at first, but there's no need to be. Our ranges are individually closed off and very safe,” Michael says. “It doesn't take long to get the hang of it, and once you do, you'll have the best time ever.” Not all axe throwing ranges are created equal. At Axes & Ales, you’ll use state-of-the-art digital targets with a variety of games including Zombie Killer, Connect Four, Tic-Tac-Toe, and more that amplify gameplay excitement. The system also helps keep track of player's scores and team names so you can make it competitive. Open to all ages, kids can get in on the fun, too. And along with a (very large) selection of canned beers, guests can also grab wine, champagne, seltzers, and tasty ciders. For food, there is a small menu of bar bites, including pizza and wings.

TO BELIEVE OR NOT TO BELIEVE

HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT

SANTA CLAUS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

T

o believe or not to believe—that is the question. For children, the extent to which they believe in Santa Claus and the length of time that they believe in Santa Claus varies. Young children sometimes question their beliefs after influence from peers and older siblings, while others may believe well into an age that you no longer feel it’s appropriate. One thing is for sure, eventually the topic of Santa Claus and his existence is going to come up and knowing how to handle it can be difficult. The best advice? Be prepared. Some experts suggest lying to your child about Santa Claus can damage the trust in your relationship. “Current and past research support the opinion that parents/caregivers are highly influential in a child’s moral development but remain divided on the harm or help of promoting the belief in Santa,” says Rise D. Kemper Hancock, LMFT, of Dignity

42

DECEMBER 2021 | SJMAG.COM

Health/St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health. On one hand, “Lies can be hurtful and damage the trustworthiness of the parent/child relationship when they are uncovered,” she says. However, others argue that promoting the belief in Santa Claus to bolster the magic of the season won’t have long-term negative effects. There is no age that is “best” to have this conversation, but one thing to keep in mind is a child’s typical development. Research suggests kids younger than seven use imaginative play to understand the world around them and most likely will not question the existence of Santa Claus unless influenced by others. Around age seven, things change. “These children begin to think more logically, understanding cause and effect. It is not that they stop believing, rather they want to understand why they believe,” Rise says. Deciding when and how to have the conversation is important. If your child is

going into middle school and still honestly believes, you may worry other kids will poke fun at them or the illusion will be ruined in a traumatizing way. For siblings, sometimes it’s best to reason with the older one before doubt spreads to younger kids in the home. It’s helpful to have an idea of what you want to say going into the conversation. You may wait for kids to approach the topic with you, but when that happens, it helps if you’ve already thought it through. Consider letting your child lead the conversation and avoid comparisons to other families. Instead of focusing on the existence of Santa Claus, focus on your child’s beliefs and explore how those beliefs and family traditions can create positive experiences for learning values and morals.

place to satisfy both their shopping needs and appetite. HISTORY

Celebrating 70 Years

at Lincoln Center  By SUZANNE LEDBETTER / D COURTESY LINCOLN CENTER

I

am not a native to San Joaquin County, but today, I call it home. When I met my husband in September of 2002, I was smitten and I knew he was the man I was going to marry. Not long after we met, he brought me to his hometown of Lodi to celebrate his nephew’s first birthday. It was my first time meeting his parents and sister along with her family, and all I knew was we were going to a fancy dinner in Stockton. It was at Ernie’s on the Brickwalk, a longtime Lincoln Center Institution, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. Fast forward 20 years, and Lincoln Center remains the shopping and dining mecca it has been since it opened in 1951. As it has for generations of families, Lincoln Center plays an incredibly special role in our lives. From brunch with babies at Market Tavern

DECEMBER 2021 | SJMAG.COM

to New Year’s Eve dinners at Midgley’s Public House, birthday celebrations at Prime Table, Christmas parties at Papapavlo’s, lunch dates with girlfriends at Bud’s Seafood Grille, and so many other important milestones, Lincoln Center’s history is woven into the fabric of our lives. One of my favorite seasons, and memories, is Lincoln Center during the holiday season. They pull out all the stops—Santa for the littles and Christmas music that echoes throughout the village. It’s the ideal time to book a dinner reservation at Midgley’s where we love to sit on the brickwalk and watch the artificial snow fall from the sky. Any local will attest that as you drive down Pacific Avenue, the towering “L” and jumbotron serve as a beacon to locals looking for a

Center. To their longevity. To their entrepreneurial spirit. To the businesses that have closed their doors for retirement. To new businesses. To the meals shared with family. To the cocktails enjoyed with friends that feel like family. And to the next 70 years. Cheers to shopping local and cheers to Lincoln Center!

San Diego

When staying on the coast, you’ll want to get on the water, and despite a dip in temperatures, it’s still plausible to take an ocean dip in the winter months (just be wary of crashing waves). Here’s the formula to make the most of a winter break in sunny San Diego. WHAT TO DO: Spend as much time on, in, or near the ocean as possible. Renting a boat from Action Sport Rentals is one way to do that. Choose between kayaks, sailboats, and powerboats and speed around Mission Bay. There are several ways to get out

48

and explore, including slow rides near the shore to a speed limitless roundabout that feels like the ocean’s Autobahn. 998 W. Mission Bay Dr. Down the street, Mission Beach is one of the most popular areas in San Diego, boasting a bustling year-round boardwalk, a beach-front amusement park dubbed Belmont Park that includes the infamous Giant Dipper roller coaster, and a giant indoor swimming pool complex. Not to

mention a spot to grab boogie board and surfboard rentals if you’re brave enough to dip more than your feet into the water. It’ll feel like summer as you stroll the aisle of fair games, tossing baseballs and throwing darts to take home prizes in between trips on the coasters, rock climbing wall, go karts, and ropes course before walking to the beach for a drink or quick lunch. Perhaps the best way to enjoy the water when it’s chilly is in a hot tub pontoon, a

boat with an actual hot tub right in the middle of it. Grab your friends and cruise around the bay, but instead of dropping into the ocean for a quick swim, get your feet wet in the full-size jacuzzi aboard your vessel. Hot Tub Cruising, 101 Santa Clara Pl. Or step aboard the Bahia Belle where you’ll get the views of the water without the cold air whipping your face. The top deck is outdoors, but large windows in the lower two decks allow for the views without the chill. Grab a drink to sip from the bar onboard and cruise in style. 998 W. Mission Bay Dr.

destinations WHERE TO STAY: Continue the water-centric fun by grabbing a room at Bahia Resort Hotel. Newly remodeled (and with a new restaurant on the way), the family-friendly resort offers calm water to wade in, kayak and SUP boards rentals, and cabanas to watch the sunset from on the sand. Some rooms include ocean views and glimpses of Belmont Park across the way. 998 W. Mission Bay Dr. On-site a heated pool and hot tub are adjacent to a freeplay arcade where kids can spend the whole day while you sip mai tais by the pool. Keep an eye on the hotel calendar; ice cream socials and beachfront movies (using a giant inflatable TV screen right on the beach) occur weekly.

Phoenix

Arizona has a reputation for being hot, hot, hot, but their winter months feel more like a California spring of fall. With nothing but a light jacket, you can transport yourself to another time of year simply by taking a quick flight south.

WHERE TO EAT: Soak up the views and warmer weather with waterfront dining. Cannonball feels like summer all year long, serving up plates of market fresh specials, including a famed Lobster Roll, plates of sashimi and nigiri, and even Crispy Salmon Tacos with just the right amount of spice. As the largest oceanfront rooftop in San Diego, it’s an ideal spot to watch the sunset over Mission Beach. 3105 Ocean Front Walk

WHAT TO DO: Don’t shy away from the outdoor adventure. Nothing spells romance like a horseback ride through the desert at sunset, watching the sun slip behind the mountains, with a collection of cacti bathing in the waning light. At Ponderosa Stables, guests can hop on one of the trusty steads—there’s a lot to choose from—and toe the line between Phoenix and Tempe as they take a leisurely stroll adjacent to a small western village. 10215 S. Central Ave., Phoenix Winter is football season and in most parts of the country attending a game means bundling up and drinking

Irish coffees to keep warm. In Arizona, however, you may still be wearing short sleeves as you cheer on your favorite team. One of the potential upsides to attending a game at State Farm Stadium (in Glendale, part of the Phoenix metro) is the Arizona Cardinals franchise is fairly new and the local following isn’t huge (although their performance thus far this year could bring in more fans) meaning if you attend against your favorite team, it may feel more like a home game than you’d expect. Another bonus? Tickets don’t run as steep. 1 Cardinals Dr., Glendale

destinations Golf is always popular in Phoenix and Scottsdale, but winter months allow for golf all day (not just in the mornings before the sweltering heat sets in). Choose from one of Scottsdale’s premier golf courses; Talking Stick Resort, Troon North, TPC, and Grayhawk are among favorites. Hiking is also more enjoyable in Arizona’s cooler months, and there are a few accessible trails that make a good morning wake up before the rest of your day. To work up a sweat, find the trailhead for Camelback Mountain in the Phoenix Mountains. The shape is said to resemble a hump and head of a kneeling camel, which is how it got its name, and while it’s only a 1.5mile hike, it’s a hard one, ascending mostly straight up the mountain for an elevation gain of over 1,200 feet. For something lighter on the legs, Hole in the Rock is a popular place to catch a sunset. Less than a ½ mile, it’s actually a geological formation in Papago Park on the border of Phoenix and Tempe. 625 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix

WHERE TO EAT: Phoenix is home to this out-of-the-box concept that will blow your mind—a hot dog restaurant specializing in off-the-wall combinations and donuts, Short Leash Hotdogs + Rollover Donuts. The retro comfort foods are best enjoyed on the large outdoor patio, which boasts swings and small tables. We recommend trying the Bear, a daring mix of peanut butter, smoked gouda, bacon, and barbecue

sauce, topped with cracker jacks, or the Sunny, a pairing of grilled pears or peaches, prosciutto, arugula, goat cheese, and honey. Before you leave, grab donuts to go with combos almost as creative as their dog menu. And don’t forget the cocktails. You can sway in the warm winter breeze while sipping craft cocktails, whiskey on the rocks, or a local brew. 4221 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix The other can’t-miss experience is at Hash Kitchen. This brunch spot with a club atmosphere is all you need

to start off your Saturday or recover on Sunday. Its popular bloody mary bar is all the rage, with an insane number of toppings to choose from in order to customize your drink, but mimosa flights are just as good and creative. Order up the avocado toast or beignets, but whatever you do, plan to share everything—the potions here are HUGE. And, if that wasn’t enough to have you rushing to make a reservation, a DJ spins tunes while you nosh. Multiple Locations

WHERE TO DRINK: The Whining Pig is a concept often duplicated but hard to find here in SJC. The barcade specializing in beer, cider, and wine, boasts a wall of communal board games plus arcade games so you can challenge each other to a round of battleship while discovering more than 125 beers, some local. Get transported even farther away without leaving Las Vegas proper, a trip inside Area 15 will take you out of this world. The glowing, glittering, where-thehell-am-I?! experience is something, you can only do in Las Vegas. With choices for dining and activities, it’s easy to spend a whole day staring at sculptures relocated from the Black Rock Desert (site of Burning Man) and sipping drinks in a neon garden. The Omega Mart experience is like an indoor playground complete with slides and secret passageways. Many of the rooms cater to igniting different senses, or you can choose to play detective and solve the oddball grocery store’s crime. If you want to know how weird it gets, consider you’ll be climbing through a freezer to get inside. Expert tip: don’t leave without stepping into The Beast for lunch where the menu is just about endless, the vibe is as kooky as its surroundings, and the peanut butter and jelly wings are the best thing on the menu. 3215 S. Another outdoor extravaganza, The Neon Museum is a must see. The graveyard for retired signs including a larger-than-life guitar that once graced the Hard Rock Hotel to extinct business signs, you can buy a lightbulb from the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign or pick up casino chips and matchbooks from Vegas’ first big hotels. There is also audio available and onsite tour guides to answer questions about each sign, many of which are still buzzing after all these years. 770 Las Vegas Blvd. N And lastly, to make the most of the area's museum offerings, stop by The Mob Museum to study organized crime and maybe even solve a mystery yourself. After touring all floors, slip downstairs for a drink. Behind one section of wall is a secret room where you can order cocktails with superb presentation, such as a drink served inside of a hollow book or gin in a mini bathtub, both as a wink to prohibitionera speakeasies. 300 Stewart Ave.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: In Vegas, these two activities go hand in hand. Keep the fiesta going by popping into Uno Más Street Tacos + Spirits inside of SAHARA Las Vegas. The casual eatery turns out some truly delicious tacos and the “best margaritas” to accompany them, as voted by the Las Vegas Review Journal. Start with the guacamole, pork chicharrones, or grilled corn before diving into street tacos in a variety of flavors, including fish and beer (made with chipotle and beer battered cod), lengua (slow-cooked beef tongue), and quesa a la plancha (a vegetarian taco featuring griddled cotija and avocado). 2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd. While still in the SAHARA, take a quick walk to Tangier. The cocktail spot is unsuspecting, not looking like much more than your

average drink stopover inside of a casino. In reality, it’s anything but. The craft cocktail list is inspired, turning up specials you can’t find just anywhere, including those created in a smoke box for that signature smokey taste and a seriously cool tableside production. 2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Bang Bar by Momofuku at Block 16, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ Urban Food Hall, is better for a grab-and-go meal. The meats are spinning on a rotisserie right in front of you. Pick your poison and get it as a wrap, a fold-up, or in a rice bowl. Instead of tortillas, the eatery uses Bang flatbread. 3708 Las Vegas Blvd. S For a fancier meal, Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at the Flamingo Las Vegas offers up high-end steak cuts with an old-school mobster flair. The tropical scene inside is continued around the corner in the adjacent speakeasy, where there is another opportunity for creative craft cocktails to enjoy. We personally recommend taking advantage of the chilled seafood tower as an appetizer followed by

a dry-aged bone-in ribeye with lobster mac and cheese and baked sourdough bread— yum! Expert Tip: Stay for a show—Piff the Magic Dragon (of America’s Got Talent fame) is a fun mix of humor and magic. 3555 Las Vegas Blvd. S WHERE TO STAY: There’s no experience like staying on the Las Vegas strip, and the Sahara is a historic place to do so. Once known as the SLS (and previously known as the Sahara when it first opened in 1952), the 2019 rebranding of the resort as the Sahara once again came with much fanfare and a large renovation. Modest rooms are appointed with modern amenities and spectacular views if you choose the right part of the hotel. At night the strip glitters below and views of the Stratosphere across the way are breathtaking day or night—a true LV experience. Expert Tip: there’s a Starbucks downstairs, which is a must for many Las Vegas travelers after a long night. 2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd.

Most succulents are not happy growing indoors because there is not enough direct sunlight available. Q. DO YOU REALLY THINK EVERYONE CAN FIND A PLANT THAT WORKS FOR THEM? A. Yes, yes, yes! I truly believe in setting people up for success with the right plant in the right spot in the right pot. When hunting for the perfect plant, it’s important to understand the lighting in your spot first. Is it going indoors? If so, what is the light level? Make sure you have enough light for the plant you have heart eyes for. Also, stop buying plants in planters that don’t have drainage holes.

A

griculture is the heart of San Joaquin County, but that doesn’t mean that everyone here has a green thumb. Horticulturalist Annie Steendam is a recent Stockton transplant eager to share her passion for teaching people how to help their plants thrive.

Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HORTICULTURIST AND A GARDENER? A. I mean, technically a horticulturist is supposed to be an “expert,” right? But you know what? That doesn’t exist. I mean, I studied horticulture in college, but I meet so many home gardeners that know so much more than I do. There are so many ways to grow plants and everyone has their own secret formula for success. It’s all about being willing to try and learning from the process. Q. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR CULTIVATING A GREEN THUMB? A. Be willing to get your hands dirty and learn from the process. If the plant died in a certain spot, take a step back and analyze why. Learn from the process and then try again! Sometimes plants die and that doesn’t mean you have a black thumb – it means you have something to learn.

Artful Spaces

Cena Luna radiates class and style on Stockton’s Miracle Mile

othing about the Miracle Mile’s newest home goods store is an accident. Carefully curated, even the name hones in perfectly on the space—an airy housewares store with an eclectic collection of goods. Cena, pronounced “Se·na”, means: “table” or “significant meal,” and Luna has ties to femininity and women. “My mom instilled in me the art of setting the table and making a meal as an act of love. She’s incredibly talented and showed me how special that is,” says Owner Lauren Tarullo. “The name is about women sharing ceremonial meals with the people they love. It’s an homage to my mom.” Originally, Lauren pursued art school to feed her inner creativity and possibly become an interior designer one day. This led to jobs working in

retail and visual merchandising at Anthropologie, Bloomingdales, and West Elm. She then went on to graduate school to study art education with new dreams of teaching in a museum. Instead, she became interested in exhibition design and how to create visually inspiring spaces. In February 2020, Lauren and her husband made the move back to Stockton. She was in the process of interviewing with the Haggin Museum when COVID-19 hit and she needed another path. “I had always thought about opening a housewares shop, but it never seemed realistic. We started talking about what it would take for us to be able to do that, and when we found the perfect location on the Miracle Mile, we knew we had to jump on it,” says Lauren. For Lauren the shop fills both her desire to construct beautiful spaces and satisfies her deep love for community, which she says comes from her parents. “My dad is an administrator for St. Joseph’s and my mom worked at St. Mary’s,” she says. “They both have always been active in the community and are Stocktonians for life.” “The shop is meant to be playful,” says Lauren. “It doesn’t take itself too seriously.” Inside you’ll find a variety of gifting options including specialty food and pantry provisions, apothecary and candles, ceramics and table linens, and much more. “I wanted 70% of the store to be small batch, with as many women brand owners as possible. I really wanted to be thoughtful about where it all comes from.”

FOREVER FESTIVE

LET THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS MEMORIES GROW  BY FAITH LEWIS YOUR DECEMBER GARDENING TO DO’S Plant cyclamen and camellias for some late-season color Check stored bulbs, corms, and tubers to ensure they’re not rotting or drying out Fertilize winter-flowering shrubs (such as Vine Hill Manzanita)

E

very year 120 million Christmas trees are cut down during the holiday season, with some 40 million of those finding their way into U.S. homes. This year, consider helping those trees find their way back out after the holidays. There are a growing number of people who opt to buy a potted tree to plant after the holidays. Not only does this spruce up your garden, but it also means your tree can keep working hard to keep our air clean and provide a necessary habitat for birds and other critters. But what do you need to know before you get your forever tree? Luckily, California winters are mild enough that conifers shouldn’t have any

issues weathering the winter (another perk is that you don’t need to wait for spring to plant your tree after the holidays). However, you should double check how large the tree is expected to grow, what type of soil it needs to thrive, and if it prefers partial shade (like the shady side of a house) or full sun. Once your living tree has made it home, leave it outside as long as possible. Having the tree inside the warm house for more than a week can cause it to break its winter dormancy, leading to damage when it’s moved back outside. If you keep it well watered and take care not to break any branches when decorating, your tree can be the gift that keeps giving year after year.

Check for snails riding out the wet weather on your plants Plant spring-blooming bulbs like tulips and hyacinth, as well as bare-root trees, shrubs, and roses Cut back dormant grapevines. Bonus: these make great wreaths! In the vegetable garden, plant artichokes, asparagus, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, potatoes, and radishes

During the composting process, microorganisms break down organic material, leaving you with a nutrient-rich soil for gardening. In order to have a successful compost you will need to ensure microorganisms have plenty of air and CHRISTMAS water by mixing the compost every other day and keeping it moist (but not soaking wet). COMPOSTING You can absolutely start a compost pile during the winter–and a surprising amount of holiday waste is compostable. Think of composting uncooked potato peels, carrot tops, and other fruit and veggie scraps from holiday meals, as well as plastic-free wrapping paper and greeting cards. If you haven’t opted to plant your tree this year, even that can be added to the mix (consider running it through a woodchipper so it breaks down faster). To get your compost started, find a spot out of the wind and in the shade, both of which will keep it from drying out too quickly. Start with a layer of twigs to allow for better drainage. Top with leaves and then alternate between greens (nitrogen-rich materials like grass clippings, veggie and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, etc.) and browns (carbon-rich materials like dead leaves, straw, sawdust, newspaper, etc.). Be sure to include enough soil – this is where you’ll find those necessary microorganisms.

CELEBRATE MEXICO’S CHRISTMAS CULTURE WITH TRADITIONAL DISHES  BY FAITH LEWIS / D DAN HOOD

E

veryone knows about tamales, but if you haven’t grown up around these traditions, many of the other popular Mexican Christmas dishes might be less familiar. Whether you’re looking to reconnect with your heritage or expand your cultural horizons this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with these dishes that make up the heart and soul of Christmas celebrations throughout Mexico. Many are labors of love, taking hours to prepare with recipes that are passed down through generations. But even if you don’t have an abuela’s recipe, you can still perfect these authentic foods and add them to any holiday meal.

“Whether you’re looking to reconnect with your heritage or expand your cultural horizons this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with these dishes”

POZOLE One of Mexico’s most-loved soups, pozole dates back to Aztec times and is now often at the heart of Christmas celebrations. The stew is typically made with pork and hominy, maize kernels that have undergone a special treatment to strip off the hulls and leaves the kernels plump and tender. Pozole can have a white, green, or red broth and is often garnished with cabbages, lime, cilantro, or radishes, making it both a flavorful and colorful addition to any festive feast.

CAPIROTADA Even though this dish is often considered an Easter specialty, plenty of families pull out the recipe for Christmas as well. Sometimes called “Mexican bread pudding,” the recipe has evolved from a sweet and savory dish served in 15th century Spain. There are still plenty of variations, some embracing the savory roots of this dish and incorporating tomatoes and onions, but the most fundamental recipe will include cinnamon, piloncillo, raisins, bread, and cheese.

BOCALAO Bocalao is actually not a dish in and of itself, but an ingredient that can be used as the base of many different holiday dishes. The popularity of this salted, dried cod (which is rehydrated before cooking) can be traced back to when the Catholic Church forbade eating meat on holy days. Fish became a popular standin and today bocalao is a versatile ingredient used in stew, or simply poached or baked.

ROMERITOS This dish is made by boiling sprigs of romerito (a plant that resembles rosemary, but has a flavor closer to spinach), which is served in a mole sauce along with potatoes and shrimp.

CHAMPURRADO Warm up with a traditional champurrado, a hot drink made with corn flour and Mexican chocolate. Popular with children and adults alike, champurrado predates Spanish presence in Middle America. All you’ll need to whip up your own batch is water (or milk), piloncillo (a type of unrefined, whole cane sugar), cinnamon sticks, Mexican chocolate, and masa harina (fine corn flour).

BUNUELOS Who doesn’t love trying new desserts?

While some southern states still serve pastry bunuelos that resemble a donut, the recipe has changed a lot since it was first introduced by the Spanish. Now, if you ask for a bunuelo, you’re likely to get a thin, fried fritter sprinkled with sugar and drizzled with a homemade guava syrup.

MARRANITOS Put away the reindeer cookie cutters and find yourself a piggie instead. This pan dulce, or sweet bread, falls somewhere between a cake and a cookie and is flavored with molasses, honey, and

cinnamon. Though the shape is a bit of a mystery, some say it appeared when pigs were first introduced to Central America by the Spanish.

PONCHE NAVIDEÑO If you can’t get your hands on all the ingredients to make a traditional champurrado, this Mexican fruit punch is the way to go. Made by simmering fresh and dried fruits with hibiscus, sugar cane, cinnamon, and piloncillo, Ponche Navideño can be served with or without rum, based on your preference. SJMAG.COM

smooth, sweet flavor and mezcal is made with many varieties of agave and roasted in underground ovens, giving it more of a savory smokey flavor,” says John Denigris, owner of Habanero Hots in Lodi. Just like tequila, mezcal can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, letting the warm flavors and little nuances seep through. Or, of course, you can mix it into a cocktail. If you do a traditional tequila tasting, your Oaxaca sips may be served with orange slices and crushed grasshopper instead of lime and salt. The reason we like mezcal for the winter is the spirit feels like a warm hug, much like a whiskey or bourbon-based drink.

MEZCAL SOUR

At Habanero Hots, the bartenders like to use mezcal to create remixes of favorite cocktails, like the Mezcal Sour. 1024 MEZCAL SOUR 2 oz. mezcal 6 oz. sweet and sour ¼ lemon, juiced 1 teaspoon powdered sugar 1 teaspoon agave nectar CRAVINGS

ot to be confused with tequila, mezcal is a smokey liquor used to create cocktails with many flavors, from earthy to floral to fruit-forward. And while many think of mezcal as a type of tequila, it’s actually the other way around. Not all mezcals are tequila, but all tequila is mezcal. “The main difference between tequila and mezcal is tequila is always made from blue agave that is steamed or roasted to give it a clean,

It’s also versatile. It’s not uncommon to replace the liquor in an old fashion with mezcal, but it’s also a good substitution for vodka in a mule or tequila in a margarita. Just like it can be dressed up with fruity components for spring and summer, the addition of winter berries and ingredients such as cinnamon and clove completely transform it for the colder months. Take advantage of the season’s freshest ingredients with a Marrakesh Express, a cocktail heavy in pomegranate juice with harissa that amplifies the heat of the cocktail. Or, if you fancy a Manhattan, add or substitute mezcal for a smokier flavor.

SMART CHOICES

A DOCTOR’S DO'S AND DON’TS WHEN EATING OUT  FAITH LEWIS BY

I

t can be hard to exercise selfcontrol when you’re looking at a mile-long menu packed with tastebud tantalizing options. But your healthy habits don’t have to suffer just because you’re away from home. With the right knowhow—and a few tips from cardiologist Ramin Manshadi—you can eat healthy even when you eat out. Start by picking the right restaurant. Have a few options lined up and then look at the menus online to see which one offers the best selection of healthy options. Not the one picking the restaurant? Don’t sweat it. “Just like every city has good and bad areas, all restaurants have healthy and unhealthy food,” Dr. Manshadi says. It’s just a matter of learning to identify which options just look good and which options are actually good for you. Steer clear of any menu item described as “creamy,” “rich,” “fried,” “breaded,” or “smothered,” and opt instead for those “grilled,” “boiled,” and “steamed.” Of course, what you order is just as important as how it’s cooked. Dr. Manshadi suggests choosing fish over red meat and steering clear of high-fat dairy products and premade, processed foods like that bottomless bread basket. “The more

76

DECEMBER 2021 | SJMAG.COM

vegetables, nuts, and grains you order, the better,” Dr. Manshadi says. And don’t be afraid to ask for simple modifications to make a dish healthier. “If the salad has a very heavy creamy [dressing], then use balsamic vinaigrette.” Alternatively, ask for dressing on the side so you can control how much actually ends up on your salad, otherwise this seemingly healthy option can be deceivingly calorie heavy. Just 60 ml of creamy dressing can net you upwards of 200 calories. So much for your best intentions. Dressings aren’t the only corners you can cut when it comes to calories. Ditch the drinks next. Opting not to order soda or alcohol will save you another 150 calories. “I gave up sodas years ago. Order water with lemon or ice tea without sweetener instead,” says Dr. Manshadi. Speaking of ordering, make sure you’re the first in line. By ordering first, you’re less likely to be influenced by someone else’s order. And then, once you’ve committed to your healthy choice, don’t change your mind—no matter how good someone else’s order sounds. You can always make a mental note and look for a similar healthy recipe when you get home.
