Which is why the Port is using sand dredged from our waterways to help Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge restore its lands and save endangered butterry and plant species. It’s also why we’re cleaning up a neighboring former naval property for use that will create jobs and economic opportunity. SUNDAY BRUNCHIN' IGNIS PROVISIONS SERVES IT UP AT RIAZA WINERY
wo years ago, we rang in a New Year unlike any other. On January 1, 2020, no one knew what was to come. And for nearly two years we’ve lived in a pandemic world—one that is shifting from a temporary and very scary situation to our new normal. New variants, new treatments, new vaccines, and new political discord have all followed and as a result it seems no one is getting ahead of themselves when it comes to 2022. I’m not sure I’ve seen a single person claim 2022 as “their year,” or promised themselves it’ll be “the best one yet.” For the most part things are looking better than they have for a while but we’re still in limbo and the mood about 2022 seems to be “proceed with caution.” There is a lot that hasn’t changed. COVID-19 seems to be here to stay, for sure. But with advancements and further understanding of the disease, we’re finding our footing. Restaurants are open, capacity limits seem to be a thing of the past, and for the most part we can travel again—with some limits, of course. So, while it’s not the world it was in 2019, at least it’s a better place than we’ve been in a long time and the optimist in me says it’s best to embrace it (safely, of course). So, if you feel comfortable, go to a Stockton Heat game and cheer for the home team. If you feel comfortable, see a drag performance at Paradise in Stockton. If you feel comfortable, go to brunch at Riaza Winery, eat satisfying soups at local restaurants, and vacation in wine country. If you don’t, order those soups to go, buy the wine and enjoy it at home, or make one of the many recipes sandwiched into our food and drink pages (bloody marys, hot toddies, and hot chocolate are all perfect for the season). Whatever makes you feel comfortable, do it, embrace it, and let San Joaquin Magazine be a part of it.
LAST THOUGHTS FIRE ON THE ICE We like to show our support for local teams here at SJ Mag. And it’s no secret we’ve had a long relationship with the Stockton Heat. We’re thrilled fans are back at games bringing excitement to the ice, and with a winning record, it’s even more fun to go out and cheer on the boys. This month we’re taking a look at a few standout players, including a local from Gilroy. Flip to page 36 to learn more and catch a glimpse of the team’s infectious personalities in the photos.

Who is Hellen Heels?
LIFE IN THE SPOTLIGHT CAN BE A REAL DRAG BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD
A
s the lights dim, and the music ramps up, Hellen Heels steps on stage. A vision in a glittering gold pantsuit and platinum blonde wig, she stomps in a pair of skyhigh heeled boots, performing high energy moves to tracks by J. Lo. Bouncing from shows at Paradise in Stockton and Badlands in Sacramento, Hellen Heels (also known as Jonathan Lopez when not dressed in full drag) is an eclectic performer. From fast and furious dance routines set to Britney tunes to love ballads that’ll give you goosebumps, she’s known for being a little bit of a wildcard. Translation: you never really know what you’re going to get. “For the most part I don’t like to repeat,” Hellen says of her performance >>

Instead, she’s at the ready with a large repertoire of songs to belt out at any time and dance moves equally as impressive as her vocals, including the ability to drop into full splits at a moment’s notice (though she endorses stretching first). “I am a very busy human being,” Hellen says of her schedule. “At any given time, I’m doing three to four shows a week.” And those shows

include a Thursday night residency at Paradise Nightclub, drag brunches dubbed Makeup & Mimosas at Badlands on Sundays, burlesque performances with the Darling Clementines where she is the only drag performer, hosting gigs at pop-up space Dry Cleaners (a queer and POC performer hub in downtown Stockton), and one-offs that have included Rocky Horror Picture Show and Pride Center events. Behind the scenes, Hellen’s drag preparation takes about three hours from shower to stage including two hours to perfect her makeup. “It’s hard to be a woman,” she laughs. received as host, producer, and essential mastermind of Into The Draglands is her online version rivals the big name show—which has never featured a Central Valley performer in its 14 seasons. The story time, however, is the best representation of who Hellen Heels is. A youth outreach director and LGBT+ presentation trainer for the San Joaquin Pride Center by day, this type of educational outreach that aims to help kids find acceptance of themselves and others is a key part of her mission— and why she does drag. The other part of the puzzle is that Hellen Heels is a natural born performer. Jonathan long wanted to get into acting, but realized gay men, especially those who can sway femme,
were overlooked in his younger years, and drag may have been his/Hellen’s best shot at a performance career. Hellen teaches that drag isn’t actually about sexuality or wanting to be a woman. “Drag is a form a gender expression and it’s an art form,” she says. “Everybody can do drag.” Hellen’s mission is to spread the gospel of drag and LGBTQ+ lifestyles all while entertaining the hell out of the community. And due to recent health struggles, she’s on a bit of a timeline to achieve her big dreams. Treatments similar to chemotherapy are helping her recover, but the reality, an immune deficiency will limit how long she can do what she does—and that, is why she goes all out, filling her schedule with the activities that bring her joy. So, who is Hellen Heels? In short, she’s the fabulous and talented alter-ego of Jonathan Lopez who shares his passion for spreading acceptance and knowledge and helping kids feel safe in their hometown. On the other side, however, she’s a boss. And Jonathan runs his drag life like a business. “She’s funny, she’s feisty, she’s entertaining... you’ll never know what to expect out of her.” SJMAG.COM

DO THE PROS OF VAPING OUTWEIGH THE CONS? BY
V
FAITH LEWIS
aping was invented in 2003 by a Chinese pharmacist and smoker who believed if he could simulate smoking, it would help him cut back on his three packs of cigarettes a day. He hoped to lessen the risk of dying from lung cancer like his father. And while he succeeded in creating the e-cigarette he imagined, it didn’t help him stop smoking; instead, it just provided a second addictive and habit-forming source of nicotine. Now, he smokes and vapes. Some people still see vaping as a useful tool to quit smoking. Others fear it acts as a “gateway” to smoking, temping teens and young adults who otherwise wouldn’t have started smoking. So, do the pros outweigh the cons? Or are we going to look back on vaping 100 years from now and see it as the next smoking epidemic?
PROS:
• Several studies back claims that vaping helps people stop smoking. According to one study, cigarettes smokers who picked up vaping were 67% more likely to quit smoking. A different study found that e-cigarettes are twice as effective at getting people to quit smoking as traditional nicotine replacements like a patch or gum. • You are in control of your smoking experience – choose your nicotine intake, output of vapor, and flavor. • E-cigarettes have been estimated to be as much as 95 percent less harmful to your health than traditional cigarettes.
24
JANUARY 2022 | SJMAG.COM
CONS:
• Vaping has skyrocketed among teens and young adults, doubling between 2013 and 2020 and introducing many to smoking when they wouldn’t have otherwise been tempted to try cigarettes. • A poor understanding of nicotine dosage can lead people to inhale higher doses than what is found in cigarettes. • Experts point a finger at flavored vaping products that target young adults. • Vaping has been linked to shortterm risks like depression, addiction, and gingivitis. Since vaping is still relatively new, long-term risks are largely unknown, but studies show a 71 percent increased risk of stroke and 40 percent higher risk of heart disease, as compared to nonusers. One chemical (diacetyl) found in flavored vaping products causes bronchiolitis obliterans – more commonly referred to as “popcorn lung,” leading to severe symptoms similar to COPD.
So, do the pros outweigh the cons? The answer depends, in part, on whether you’re already a smoker. Vaping can be a healthier alternative but poses a huge risk to people who otherwise wouldn’t smoke.

rom sunsets enjoyed on the rooftop lounge to cheering on your favorite local pickleball team in the stands of the on-site court, living at La Vida—Lodi’s newest luxury 55+ community—is anything but boring. A wide breadth of activities that cater to your inner social butterfly prove why this is an active community for a fabulous age group. The annual social calendar includes Cinco de Mayo celebrations, summer pool parties, sip and paint nights, costume parties, Monday night football events, and more. The number of ways to socialize is one of the biggest draws of the apartment community (with one- and twobedroom options available for rent).
“We are not just a typical apartment community,” Brenda Lightle On a daily basis, it’s the amenities that make all the difference, rendering leaving your home base almost unnecessary. In addition to the pickleball court, which draws the most attention according to Portfolio Manager Brenda Lightle, an ever-expanding, high-performance fitness facility; saltwater pool and spa that caters to the demographic with its gentle, skin-soothing properties and extra buoyancy; and the movie theater playing a mix of new releases and timeless classics, round out some of La Vida’s biggest draws.

To live in the community, residents need to meet the minimum age requirement of 55—no kids, but dogs are allowed—and qualify for the monthly rent. Aside from that, moving in is easy. There are six floorplans, ranging in square footage from 761 square feet to 1,106 square feet. All of the spaces, both private and communal, were created with modern living and clean lines in mind—nothing tired or dated here. A penthouse apartment is available upon request for both long- and short-term rentals, offered fully furnished for those who want even more luxurious living quarters. “Trying to put into words how special of a community we are is difficult because you have
to really be there in person to get that feel,” Brenda says. And while the amenities and social events are a big incentive to move in, it’s the bonds formed by residents that make the biggest difference. “They are so welcoming of anyone that walks through the door.”

COMMUNITY
GROWING DREAMS
BUFA’S GARDEN IS JUST THE START OF WHAT THEY’RE BUILDING BY MEGAN MEINTASIS / D DAN HOOD
I
t all started in 2015 when a group of twelve civicminded individuals came together with a desire to grow enough local, pesticide-free produce to share with their community. At the time, they started by first serving themselves and growing their own food at Boggs Track Community Farm. It wasn’t long before they outgrew their 20x20 plot and were in search of more land. The stars aligned when a generous land owner by the name of Kitty Brown offered the group to farm on her land in French Camp for $1 per year. This opened the door for a larger garden and the opportunity to grow enough produce to feed more than just themselves. Fast forward to today, the garden is now the foundation of an impactful nonprofit called Black Urban Farmers Association, or BUFA. The association is inspired by the history of black farmers in the United States and the impact they made and continue to make on the availability of healthy foods. “I’ve believed in what BUFA could do for people, especially African American people, from its beginning,” says Reatha Hardy-Jordan, co-founder and director of the association. “I am very passionate about helping others, and I believe that is exactly what BUFA has allowed me to do. Food, the right food, matters.” BUFA is focusing its efforts on providing its
produce at an affordable cost to corner market shoppers in South Stockton that wouldn’t otherwise have access to locally grown, pesticidefree produce. The organization also has plans to donate produce to community partners in Stockton. The heart of BUFA, however, is about growing more than a garden; it’s about growing a community that notices the needs of those around
them and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty in an effort to meet those needs. Volunteers at the farm not only learn about how pesticide-free produce is grown, they also get to take some home. “I love to see people come out, and experience what it feels like to give back,” says Reatha. “When you volunteer on the farm, you become a part of a community that really cares about health and hunger.”
GET FARMING
To further encourage farming in Stockton, The City of Stockton’s Economic Development Department has created a grant to support urban farmers and food entrepreneurs in the community. The City received the additional grant funding being used for this program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant CARES (CDBGCV3) in response to the effects of COVID-19. The City considers this grant crucial to sustaining the community’s food industry, while increasing neighborhood access to locally grown, affordable foods.

Combine your wine lust with a love of the coast—this particular area of Sonoma County offers rugged bluffs ascending from the ocean, seemingly bottomless glasses of chardonnay and pinot noir, and the best digs for a night tucked into bed, the sounds emanating from vintage records lulling you to sleep. First things first, when you come for wine, this becomes the most important item on the itinerary. Jenner, Calif. is home to one tasting room dubbed Fort Ross Vineyard Tasting Room. Off a country road about two miles from the highway, the building proffers scenic views from a modern, wood cabin-esque estate. Come in Friday through Tuesday and sip as you overlook the Pacific Ocean, floating above the coastal fog and surrounded by green meadows and forests that glisten with dew drops in winter months. The tasting experience includes small bites and wines with food prepared by the in-house chef using locally grown ingredients with a vegetarian dining option for $55 per person. 15725 Meyers Grade Rd., Jenner The rest of your evening is best spent at Timber Cove Resort, a stunning, modern lodge perched on the tip of

the peninsula, with views of the ocean from outdoor table tennis and pool tables perfect for playing with friends or challenging your significant other to a round. Inside, the play continues with a large collection of board games to enjoy by the fire over a bottle—or glass—of wine. A roaring fire heats the lodge in colder months while Bubba the bartender whips up cocktails and pours local vino. On Wednesdays live music is your soundtrack. When you’re ready for food, eat on site—but be warned an advance reservation may be needed (and if you don’t secure one there aren’t a lot of other options for dinner nearby). The fine dining establishment dubbed Coast Kitchen offers a smattering of delicacies from chicken to fresh seafood. The menu rotates so we can’t promise what will be there in January, but regardless of the specifics, the fare will be delicious and cooked to perfection. Whatever you do, don’t skip dessert. Before you retire to your room—many of which boast stunning views of the pristine coastline—grab a handful of records from the lobby. Rentals are free and you can take as many as you like. The only stipulation is you return them before you leave. From the balcony, watch sunset or sunrise, or skip downstairs to enjoy the view over the communal firepit.
The Winston
Sonoma
Within city limits—a little over an hour from Jenner—Sonoma County is alive with wine experiences to fill your time and your wine cabinet. With a more casual feel than the other side of the hill, Sonoma serves up wine just as delicious as the Napa Valley but with experiences that feel more accessible to some. Showcasing only the region’s best, Landmark delights with a line-up of pinot noirs and chardonnays. You’ll enjoy five sips while taking in views of the Mayacamas Mountains from the Kenwood Estate’s gardens. As an extra perk, every presentation comes with a geography lesson, expanding your knowledge from farm to glass. 101 Adobe Canyon Rd., Kenwood For another kind of experience entirely, make your next stop Benziger Family Winery. The Biodynamic Tractor Tram Tour of the property explores its dedication to sustainable and Biodynamic farming practices, including a garden meant to keep bugs away from the vines to eliminate the need for pesticides. On the tour you’ll be pulled by a tractor and regaled with the humor or Dr. Bob or another tour guide before settling into the tasting room for a few more sips. On occasion, a tram tour special provides better pricing for souvenirs. 1883 London Ranch Rd., Glen Ellen If you’re open to an interactive experience, we recommend a stop at Meadowcroft Wines. Situated on the old grounds of Sunset Magazine, Meadowcroft is part of a sprawling estate offering up picture-perfect backdrops ideal for photo shoots, restaurants, shopping, and more. The blending experience here is a full-blown wine education, teaching you while also testing your senses. Create your own bottle to take home by mixing several of Owner and Winemaker Tom Meadowcroft’s own varietals using beakers and other fun tools that will transport you back to high school science—but with wine to sip during your lesson. 23574 Arnold Dr.,

destinations Arnold Dr., Glen Ellen. When you’re ready to walk off all of those calories, head to Jack London State Park. Open to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and bird watchers, we recommend taking a quick trip down to the Wolf House ruins for a quick history lesson. About one mile in total, it’s not a hard trek, and a quick detour will also take you to the author Jack London’s gravesite as well as the graves of two young children who once lived on the property. On your way back, stop by the museum to learn more. 2400 London Ranch Rd., Glen Ellen While wine and food is important, where to stay is one of the first considerations of any trip. And let’s just say, Sonoma isn’t short on options. The Sonoma Lodge mentioned above is one of the best options in the city, but the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is another worthy choice. Come here if you’re a fan of spas, where outdoor pools are heated above 80 degrees and you can switch between hot springs with just a day pass. Order appetizers as you lounge before retreating to your room, which feels like an oasis of its own. On property—one that is popular for hosting weddings—lawn games and outdoor features make it easy to spend your evening without leaving, and a classic American breakfast with coffee and mimosas is perhaps the only way to start your day. 100 Boyes Blvd., Sonoma
Vinland Hotel & Lounge
Sonoma When it comes to food, we recommend not skipping a chance to dine at Girl & The Fig. The downtown restaurant serves "country food with a French passion.” Inside it’s a city feel, buzzing with energy in the heart of downtown Sonoma. Start your meal with a glass of wine and cheese and charcuterie before moving on to the can’t-miss duck confit, served with roasted brussels sprouts, celery root-apple puree, bacon, and chili gastrique. 110 W. Spain St., Sonoma Another meal-not-to-miss is at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort. Michael Mina’s creation—Wit & Wisdom— offers high-end and hearty dining to end your evening, perfect after a long day of wine tasting (and even better if you’re staying on site at the gorgeous property complete with a

spa and well-appointed rooms with private patios). One of the best items on the menu is the savory “pop tart,” a braised short rib wrapped inside of a flaky pastry crust and served with a horseradish cream au poivre. For your main, choose from large pizzas in decadent flavor combinations, a selection of fresh seafood, and even pastas. 1325 Broadway at Leveroni & Napa roads, Sonoma If you’re looking for a quick bite, Les Pascals Patisserie, a French bakery serving up meringue and croque monsiuers is the perfect stopover (just down the hill from Jack London State Park and Benziger Family Winery). We recommend sampling their quiche and taking home a chocolate croissant. Plus, coffee if you need a pick-me-up. 13798

destinations There’s more than wine in wine country
Not everyone would jump at the chance to complete a vodka tasting, but we definitely recommend giving it a try while in Sonoma. Hanson of Sonoma Distillery serves flavorful organic, grape-based, gluten-free. and non-GMO vodka to guests and also mixes up cocktails with the ingredients. Start by sipping through flavors like grapefruit, habanero, and cucumber (alcoholic spa water) before ordering a few fun mixes to enjoy with lunch. On weekends, wood-fired pizzas are a hearty choice, while caviar and small bites can be enjoyed any day of the week. 22985 Burndale Rd., Sonoma
When you’re ready to explore, start your journey with sips at Dana V. Wines. The quaint tasting room sits on Solvang’s main stretch making it accessible to other wine tastings and outings. White lovers will appreciate the 2020 Late Harvest Viognier while fans of red varietals may prefer the Cabernet Sauvignon from Happy Canyon, 1588 Mission Dr., Ste. B, Solvang. Another can’t-miss is the Italian tasting room Toccata. When the weather is nice a spot on the patio is divine for sipping through this robust collection of wines. 1650 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang For food, stop by peasants FEAST where the only thing better than the fare is the hospitality. This family-run eatery boasts a full menu of curated goodness. May we recommend the tacos (vegetarian available) and Solvang Hot Chicken? And don’t even think about leaving without Nannie’s Frozen Lime Pie, a family recipe featuring decadent layers of graham cracker, lime sherbert, and Italian meringue. The location here is prime for people watching. Grab an outdoor table and sip local while taking in the sights. 487
Atterdag Rd., Solvang, For breakfast, anything other than brekkies by CHOMP won’t do. CHOMP is a local spot famous for its burgers, and brekkies is its late morning (or early afternoon) concept, offering both American and Mexican breakfast dishes (plus mimosas). The menu feels endless with hearty options like chicken and waffles and biscuits and gravy. For lighter bites, brekkie toast is where it’s at—choose from California Avocado, Nutella, and Almond Butter. Again, indoor seating is open but on a warm day, there’s no reason not to soak in the great outdoors. 1655 Mission Dr., Solvang Before you leave you MUST stop by the local bakeries and candy shops to gorge on Danish sweets and treats. The line can get long and the pastry cases are stacked so it’s hard to pick just one thing to go home with. Do yourself a favor and load up for later. The Danish butter cookies and butter ring coffee cake are too good to pass up. The Swedish Candy Factory offers traditional hard candies and more in Frederick’s Court. 485 Alisal Rd. # 125, Solvang

Solvang
One thing is for sure, if it’s warm weather and wine you seek, heading south is the key. Solvang is a cute little Danish-inspired town dripping in cabernet. And if you’re looking to wet your whistle while also feeling like you’ve been transported to another continent, here’s the space to do it. Start your trip by checking into one of Solvang’s newer properties. The Winston is a charming boutique hotel offering upscale amenities for its 14 rooms and built into the Historic Old Mill Clock Tower. The overall vibe is modern bohemian chic with high end touches that help it stand out, 486-C, 1st St., Solvang. Vinland Hotel & Lounge is just minutes away from The Winston and offers a more classic hotel experience with a clean and modern design. For a truly special experience, book one of the property’s top suites, which work in partnership with local wineries to curate exclusive perks for its inhabitants. Plus, a heated pool, hot tub, cold brew coffee bar, and V Lounge restaurant with Danish flair adds to your overall stay. 1455 Mission Dr., Solvang

our ultimate excuse to indulge in a Sunday Funday is here—look no further than brunch with Ignis Provisions. The husband-and-wife duo of Daniel and Bri Cortez are serving up a brilliant brunch at Riaza Winery in Lodi, and you do not want to miss these perfectly plated provisions. This surefire pairing of two talented chefs and a wellestablished Lodi winery results in a boozy brunch to get excited about. Just think—pork belly bowls and tempranillo as a drool-worthy combination. The partnership started slow but has taken off. After providing food for several Riaza winery events, the pair approached winery owners, Rick and Erin Taylor, about the possibility of pulling up the Ignis Provisions trailer on Sundays for brunch. What
began as a gracious opportunity has blossomed into a fortuitous relationship for both parties. After all, what is better than an evolving, eclectic brunch menu paired with local wines? “The Riaza family has been our biggest fan/supporter since the very beginning when we were just working off of a tiny little grill,” said Bri Cortez. “We couldn't be more thankful to them.” Daniel and Bri’s history, however, predates their Ignis business venture. It began when the two met at work five years ago. Bri and Daniel both attended Cordon Bleu in Sacramento where they grinded their way up the ranks of kitchens in Napa, Sonoma, and Lodi’s Wine countries. When the world shut down in the spring of 2020, the couple decided to take a leap of faith. They began Ignis
Provisions during the pandemic to provide for their family with the flexibility of working for themselves. Ignis Provisions is an ode to the roots of their combined passion for the art of cooking. The name derives from the Latin word for fire and the primal necessity of cooking. They use live fire as much as possible in their cuisine, whether they are smoking, grilling, or whipping up a table-side presentation. IP’s brunch menu is as eclectic as California cuisine. On any given weekend you might find Thai-, Mexican-, or even Japaneseinspired dishes, and on others, you can savor

reinvented classics. Take, for example, their in-house French toast crafted from bread pudding pressed for 24 hours. Sometimes they throw down lamb and eggs, lox flatbread, and even a spicy shrimp po’boy, all delectable rifts on classic recipes. On a recent visit to Riaza Winery, the Cortezs pumped out satisfying hand-made tater tots, molded and dipped in the fryer before getting served on a bed of piping hot queso. The dish is garnished with pickled onions and microgreens, resulting in the best hearty hangover grub. But one of the team’s all-time favorites is the rabbit posole. “We like to get adventurous
with proteins in a way that’s familiar enough that guests will try something new,” Cortez says. “So far it’s worked well for us!” While many people couldn’t imagine working day in and day out with their spouse, it’s something that comes naturally to Bri and Daniel. “We honestly love working together. We met at work, so we've never known a life outside of being coworkers.” Cortez says. “Five years later and we are pretty in sync. Not only do we get to spend time together, but we also get to share our passion project.” For 2022, make your New Year’s resolution a visit to Ignis Provisions at Riaza Winery, or check them out on social media to see where they’ll be posted for the rest of the weekend.

How To Make the Best Bloody Mary
JAN. 1 IS NATIONAL BLOODY MARY DAY
I
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
f you went all out for New Years, then January 1 may call for some hair of the dog—that’s why the first day of the New Year is dubbed National Bloody Mary Day here in America. With alcohol to relieve headaches and body pain, salt to replenish

electrolytes, and vegetables to settle the stomach, it’s a common hangover “cure” for the masses. Not to mention that stalk of celery as garnish is mostly water for rehydration and if you’ve got it topped with bacon, that’s more salt and a little grease to calm nausea.
So, how do you make the best Bloody Mary in the land? Start with your base. Vodka is the most common mixer for a Bloody Mary, but you can also make it with mezcal, gin, or even add a dash of whiskey to your vodka-base. Then comes the juice. While tomato juice is the most common, using a vegetable juice that includes other vitamins and nutrients may also taste better. Make it easy by reaching for V8 to maintain the tomatoheavy flavor profile and consider adding pickle juice to the mix. Or, if you like the classic, go with clamato. Some experts suggest prepping your Bloody Mary ahead of time, chilling the juice (with spices added, for at least an hour and maybe even overnight) for the best results. Next, choose your heat level. You may often hear bartenders asking how spicy you want your Bloody Mary to be, so considering personal tolerance is important. If you like it hot, throw in some Tabasco or even a habanero hot sauce. For milder spice, pepper, vinegar, celery seed, salt, Worcestershire, and horseradish are all go-tos. The last step in concocting the perfect at-home Bloody Mary is the garnish, which can easily become the most fun part of the venture. Start with a celery stalk and maybe some green beans or green olives. Asparagus or pickle spears are good picks, too. Or replace breakfast with the damn thing by adding bacon, an angus beef slider, and whatever else you can get your hands on.

SIPS
Health Benefits of a Hot Toddy BY SARAH STEFFENS
I
f you’ve ever been offered a cocktail when you are feeling under the weather, there may actually be some benefit to sipping one in particular. The Hot Toddy, a hot beverage made with lemon, honey, and whiskey, is known to alleviate a sore throat and symptoms from the common cold and flu. Originating in Ireland, the Hot Toddy has been served to those needing a sense of warmth and relief since the eighteenth century. Maybe you have witnessed your grandparents preparing one of these mugs of comfort during a spell of a seasonal virus or have seen them on a menu while you are out enjoying a spirited drink with others, but did you know of the drink’s medicinal properties? While perhaps your medical physician may not prescribe this as medicine over more common decongestants and pain relievers, many people report feeling warm from the inside out, able to relax, and soothed and relieved from the discomforts of seasonal illnesses after a cup or

two. Sort of like a warm hug when your body could use some extra comfort. So, how does this drink actually help you feel better? We have the science to back it up. Heated beverages are known to help break down excess mucous and relieve chills and shakiness in those that are sick while lemon is known for its healing vitamin C and honey has antimicrobial benefits. Add to diluted whiskey and “patients” are often able to pause from their uncomfortable symptoms for a bit as their bodies heal and recover. That being said, all things in moderation is an important guide to regard, especially when consuming any beverage with alcohol and added sweeteners. Best consumed in small doses and infrequently, Hot Toddies can only be served as medicine to those 21 and over, should not replace a medical professional’s advice, and are best followed by a tall glass of water, some herbal tea, and plenty of rest and TLC.
HOT TODDY Serves 2 INGREDIENTS 2 cups water 3 ounces whiskey 2 tbsp. honey 2 tbsp. lemon juice Lemon slices and dried cinnamon sticks, to garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Bring water to a simmer in a teapot or saucepan.
2. Add whiskey, honey, and lemon juice and stir well until honey is dissolved. 3. Pour into mugs or thick stemware. 4. Garnish with lemon slices and cinnamon sticks.

IN SEASON
COZY UP WITH HOT COCOA By SUZANNE LEDBETTER
I
s there a better way to take the chill out of a cold winter’s day than with a piping hot cup of hot cocoa? We think not. Hot chocolate is the quintessential sip on a blistery night, and it pairs perfectly with family movie or date night. And while you can, of course, opt for the pre-made cocoa mix from the grocery store, we’re sharing three recipes to whip up your own right in the comfort of your home. So, get out your favorite mugs, light up your fireplace, and take on one of these simple recipes.

National Hot Cocoa Day is January 31

JANUARY 2022 | SJMAG.COM
FROZEN HOT COCOA INGREDIENTS
3 oz. of dark chocolate 2 tsp. hot cocoa mix 1 ½ tbsp. sugar 1 ½ c. whole milk 3 c. ice Whipped cream Chocolate shavings and cherry, for garnish
DIRECTIONS Place glass mugs in the freezer and leave overnight. Remove from the freezer and drizzle chocolate sauce into the glass and swirl. Place the mugs back into the freezer
and let chill until ready to serve. Chop chocolate into small pieces and place in top of a double boiler over simmering water, stirring until melted. Add the cocoa and sugar, stirring constantly until thoroughly mixed. Remove from heat and slowly add ½ cup of milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature. Place the remaining milk, chocolate mixture, and ice in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into chilled glass and garnish with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a cherry.
FRENCH HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS
1 ½ c. whole milk ½ c. heavy whipping cream 2 tsp. powdered sugar ½ tsp. espresso powder 8 oz. bittersweet chocolate or dark chocolate (70 percent or higher)
DIRECTIONS In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk, cream, sugar, and espresso powder until small bubbles appear. Do not allow liquid to boil. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in chopped chocolate until melted. Return sauce to low heat if needed for chocolate to completely melt and whisk. Pour into your favorite mug and top with whipped cream.
BOOZY HOT COCOA 4 c. whole milk 2 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 6 oz. dark chocolate 1 tsp. sea salt 4 oz. bourbon 2 oz. Frangelico 2 oz. Irish cream Marshmallows for garnish
DIRECTIONS In small saucepan over medium-low heat, add milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla and cook until completely dissolved. Do not let mixture come to a boil. Add chocolate pieces, whisking until incorporated. Remove from heat. Stir in bourbon, Frangelico, and Irish cream. Serve immediately with marshmallows.
EDITOR’S TIPS FOR TOPPINGS The sky is the limit. If you’re kiddos are huge fans of Oreos, crush them up in a small bag and pour over the whipped cream. If you love cinnamon and nutmeg, add a few dashes on top for extra flavor. Or, if you have an abundance of leftover candy canes from Christmas, crush them up and sprinkle over the top to keep that festive feeling alive all winter long. SJMAG.COM
