A Wealth of Health
HE WHO HAS HEALTH
HAS HOPE; & HE WHO HAS HOPE HAS EVERYTHING –Thomas Carlyle
Here at San Joaquin magazine, we could certainly do a little more for our health. I always encourage my staff to stand up from their desks occasionally, take a quick walk on their breaks, and not to skip breakfast (looking at you, Editorial). It’s important to take care of your health in those small ways, so you don’t end up dealing with major health problems years down the road. Luckily, we have a wealth of health care resources right here in our small-town Central Valley that allows us to receive big-city, state of the art care without leaving home. We have some of the best doctors and hospitals around—a fact that becomes more apparent every year as we work on our annual health guide. And with help from these notable physicians, surgeons, and health providers, we offer an annual guide to support your health & wellness throughout the year. As the only comprehensive Health & Wellness guide in the area, you can keep this edition handy throughout the year as a go-to guide when choosing a doctor, health plan, or provider, or if you’re considering a procedure, or looking to turn a new leaf in your own wellness journey. Few things evolve as quickly as advances in health care in today’s world, and we were happy to spend time with our local hospitals discussing how they work to stay abreast of the latest trends, and how they dedicate their efforts to ensuring San Joaquin residents have access to such technology that at times could only be found in the big city. With that said, we are excited to share with you the technology and newest cutting-edge treatment and surgical options offered here at home. With you, your children, and aging parents in mind—we filled our pages with comprehensive information and news covering the latest happenings in local health care, hospital offerings, innovations and growth, health hot topics, and a personal look into the lives of health care professional in our area. From pediatric dentistry to cosmetic surgery and general health, we enjoyed our time working with local professionals to bring you a localized and personalized tool in which to best care for your family. Stay healthy, San Joaquin,

TO PLUMP OR NOT TO PLUMP?
THE DO’S & DON’TS OF LIP INJECTIONS Lip injections are definitely ontrend in 2019. Many women are going bigger, using fillers to create a fuller lip while others are focused on creating facial symmetry. Regardless of the goal, we have some dos and don’ts for getting lip fillers in 2019.
DON’T
DO choose your provider carefully. Many
DO follow aftercare instruc-
medical professionals are legally allowed to provide lip injection services to clients, however, not all of them are well trained in this application. This isn’t the time to focus on saving money—choose a person who is skilled and trained in lip injections to prevent side effects and poor results.
DO know the appropriate ratios. According to Dr. Ruby Gill, medical director at the Gill Medical Group and Gill Aesthetic Institute, there are specific ratios that lips should adhere to. For many, when comparing top to bottom, 1:1.6, is considered ideal. However, it does change based on the individual. If you’re getting injections, try to achieve or maintain a ratio that complements your face.
DON’T go too big. The goal is to create symmetry not just between the top and bottom lip but also on the face as a whole. Lips should balance other facial features including eyes and nose.
DO use the right type of filler. Different fillers have different viscosity and this affects how natural lips will look. Age dictates what type of filler should be used, and this is a question the medical professional completing your service should be able to answer.

rush. Significant changes in lip size and shape can be done over time but it is a gradual process. Sometimes several appointments will be needed, and likely spaced out, to make a big difference.
tions. Take medication to reduce the reoccurrence of cold sores if you have suffered them in the past, ice after the procedure to bring down swelling and discomfort, and take overthe-counter medication for pain as needed.
DO choose your timing wisely. Getting lip injections too close to an event may be a big mistake. For many, lips swell and it can take about a week for fillers to settle where they should. Not to mention, despite the use of a numbing agent during the procedure, some pain is expected, so you might want to rest day one.

THIS not THAT
BY CAITLIN HAMER
MANAGING YOUR DIABETES DIET
For many people, one of the toughest aspects of a Type II diabetes diagnosis is learning how to alter one’s diet. If you’ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes and are looking for a refresher on what you should and shouldn’t eat, or if you’re simply looking to change your diet to avoid a potential diabetes diagnosis, here are some tips on what to eat and what to avoid.
PROTEINS
Protein is a vital part of everyone’s diet, as it can help keep you satiated for longer, which in turn can promote weight loss. Diabetics should make sure to get plenty of lean proteins that are low in saturated fats, so say yes to canned tuna in water, skinless chicken, and raw unsalted nuts. Avoid sugary sweetened nuts, as well as deli meats and hot dogs, which are processed and contain high amounts of sodium.
GRAINS
While you may think you need to avoid carbs altogether, whole grains that are rich in vitamins and filling fiber should very much be a part of your diet. This is just a case of simple substitution – instead of white rice, white bread, or white pastas, reach for brown or wild rice, whole-grain breads, and whole wheat pastas.
VEGETABLES
The key to making sure your vegetable intake is as healthy as possible is to avoid consuming anything too starchy. Stick to greens (like spinach and kale), asparagus, and cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower. Vegetables to consume in moderation include corn, potatoes (sweet or white), and peas.

FRUITS
As nature’s very own candy, fruit is something else you’ll want to enjoy in moderation. Make sure to opt for high-antioxidant fruits as opposed to fruits that have a higher glycemic index. Consider noshing on apples, berries, and apricots, but avoid dried fruit, canned fruit, and fruit juices. Sweeter fruits, like mangos, pineapples, and grapes should be carefully portioned out, lest you eat too much.
FATS
When it comes to fats, saturated and trans fats are the ones to avoid, and this can usually be done by looking for the term “hydrogenated” on the packages of processed snacks. Fast foods and full-fat dairy products are also unhealthy, so seek out foods like avocados, salmon, and edamame for your healthy fat sources. The oils you cook in make a difference, too: avoid coconut and palm oils, and opt for plantbased oils instead.

cosmetic dentistry BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
CHIPPED
TEETH: BONDINGS, CAPS/CROWNS, VENEERS Many people have chipped a tooth before. I first chipped my front teeth when I was six years old (I had the brilliant idea of diving headfirst into a jacuzzi). Since that time, I’ve had to have my teeth bonded every couple of years, as the bonding would wear down and eventually chip. But there are other options when fixing a chipped tooth, each with their own pros and cons. If you’re frustrated with your chipped tooth, we’ve got all the info you need to know to make your smile whole again.
DENTAL FILLING OR BONDING
If your chip is small and in the back of your mouth, your dentist can repair it with filling. If you’ve chipped your front teeth, or any teeth that can be seen when you smile, chances are you’ll need a cosmetic procedure called bonding, in which your dentist will apply a tooth-colored composite resin to your teeth.
Pros:
No anesthesia Less expensive than other options Quick procedure Less tooth needs to be removed
Cons:
Bonding materials break more easily than crowns or veneers Easily stained by coffee, tea, smoking, etc.
DENTAL CAPS OR CROWNS
If a large part of your tooth has broken off, your dentist can file away part of the remaining tooth and cover it with a tooth-shaped cap known as a crown. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials including metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PMF), resin, or ceramic.
Pros:
Restores and protects your natural tooth Will last from 10 to 15 years
Cons:
May require two visits to the dentist Often requires tooth trimming Moderately expensive
DENTAL VENEERS
Usually made of porcelain, a Veneer is a thin layer of dental material that replaces enamel and is bonded onto the natural tooth. If you’ve chipped your tooth as a child and have had to get them continuously re-bonded, Veneers are a great option to consider as you get older.
Pros:
Lasts for up to 20 years Won’t stain like composite bonding Minimal amount of tooth preparation
Cons:
Highest cost of all options Increased tooth sensitivity
TALK to your local dentist about which
cosmetic procedure is right for you. We promise you’ll be grinning again in no time!

TEETH
GRINDING 101 It’s not unusual to grind your teeth from time to time, especially in moments of stress, but consistent grinding can lead to trouble. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, leads to painful symptoms and can create significant problems with oral health.
CAUSE:
Teeth grinding doesn’t have a singular cause; however, many people find themselves grinding teeth in response to stress. In these cases, there may be flare-ups of the bad behavior when outside situations cause anxiety. What many may not know, however, is that existing oral problems such as an uneven bite, missing teeth, or crooked teeth can make people more susceptible to teeth grinding—stressed out or not. The last common culprit is a sleep disorder, as much teeth grinding happens during sleep. If any of these ailments plague you, seek help from the proper physician.
EFFECT: Grinding your teeth can cause facial pain and pain in the jaw as well as TMD or TMJ, headaches, earaches, poor sleep, and oral

issues. For some, teeth wear down, become sensitive, and can even fall out as a result.
SOLUTION:
Want to put the kibosh on this bad habit?
GENERAL TIPS: Sometimes limiting caffeine intake can help. Cut back on foods and drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, chocolate, and soda. Alcohol is another culprit as many people who grind find drinking alcohol intensifies grinding. Avoid chewing on other items such as pens or even gum, which can lead to teeth grinding because the jaw becomes used to the movement.
IF IT HAPPENS WHILE YOU SLEEP: Mouth guards
are one of the more popular interventions used to limit teeth grinding. See a dentist to be fitted for a device. Sometimes using a warm compress against one cheek and in front of the earlobe on one or both sides before bed can also help.
IF IT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE AWAKE:
Sometimes breaking a bad habit just takes a little time. Train yourself not to clench. Placing the tongue between teeth can help to relax jaw muscles and limit clenching.
IF STRESS CAUSES GRINDING: Seek help. Either
try to reduce stress on your own or see a professional. Stress counseling can help for those feeling particularly overwhelmed. Therapy or exercise programs are two other possible interventions for grinders.

5 WAYS TO COPE WITH WORK STRESS HEART HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES
The statistics on workplace stress aren’t pretty, but these days, it seems like we’re all willing to accept stress as a part of our lives. But that shouldn’t be the case; job stress can lead to poor work performance, and can take a toll on you emotionally, mentally, and physically. To avoid serious health problems that are associated with stress, such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, learn how to manage – and reduce – your work stress with these steps.
1
HEALTHY EATING CHOICES
Make sure your lunches and breakfasts are nutritious. Start by eliminating unnecessary sugars and cutting down on caffeine – this will be healthier overall but will also help you avoid an afternoon crash that can you leave you cranky. Make sure to add heart healthy foods to your diet, too!
2
EXERCISE
Though working out may be the last thing you want to do after
18
|
work (or before), exercise is a seriously effective method of stressbusting. Start simply, like by taking a walk after you finish your lunch. Exercise can also help elevate your mood, in addition to generally being good for your health.
3
SEEK SUPPORT
Whether it’s finding a therapist or speaking with your supervisor, it’s imperative that you find ways to cope with and manage work stress before it negatively affects your performance. And make sure to spend time with loved ones outside of work; research has shown that social interaction can have a positive impact on your health.
4
SLEEP This
one may seem easier said than done, but a regular lack of sleep can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, amongst other health issues. And as you’ve probably noticed, when you’re tired, you’re more likely to be irritable and stressed. If you find yourself struggling to sleep, try to avoid screen time within a few hours of bed

time, and stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends.
5
CUT OUT BAD HABITS We all know
how bad smoking is for your health, but if you’re a regular smoker, you may be worried that quitting will add to your stress. However, the longterm benefits that being smoke free will have on your health will be worth it. And while it may be tempting to unwind after work every night with a drink, be careful – moderate drinking is fine, but excessive amounts can be detrimental to your heart health.

fitness BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
HOW to BURN FAT & MAINTAIN MUSCLE From low carb diets, to intermittent fasting, to replacing meals with protein shakes, fitness fanatics around the world spend their whole lives searching for the correct answer to this question: how to burn fat and build muscle at the same time. Well, according to our local experts, there’s a reason the answer is so elusive: you really can’t build muscle and burn fat at the same time. You can, however, burn fat and maintain muscle. “Burning fat and building muscle really are two different goals,” says Jackie Keigley, Group Exercise Director at Twin Arbors Gym in Lodi. The reason for this is that, to burn fat, you must be in a caloric deficit, while to build muscle, you must be in a caloric surplus. You see the problem. “If you’re in a caloric deficit and burning fat, you’re not going to have the extra energy and fuel to fatigue and build your muscles,” states Jackie. “But, by having protein in your diet and choosing the right workout, you can maintain muscle while also burning fat.” Many people opt for sticking with either cardio or weight lifting, but the truth is, you really need both. “A great opportunity to burn fat and not lose any muscle is interval training. When you hit the interval, you’re asking your body to exert more oxygen which makes your body burn more energy than long, steady burning that going on a jog would induce,” explains Jackie. At Twin Arbors Gym, they offer a diverse array of classes, several of which focus on this type of training, such as “Stacked Intervals”, or “Max 30” that push members to their limits in a fun, group-setting. Not a fan of the group workouts? Not a problem. “What sets Twin Arbors apart
20

is that our health clubs are broken up into studio type spaces so you’re not exercising in one giant group space all the time,” says David Claxton, Co-Owner of Twin Arbors. “We’ve got a full-on free weight room, several cardio areas, a stretch studio upstairs… if you want privacy, you can find the space to have that.” If you’re looking to get in shape this summer, take it from Kay Claxton, Co-Owner of Twin Arbors, and David’s wife. “Get in the door, we’re here to help!” FEEL THE BURN: TWIN ARBORS SPORTS CLUB 1900 S. eye health BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
UNDERSTANDING
GLAUCOMA Glaucoma is the most common cause of blindness in the U.S. in people over 60 years old. In fact, if you’re over 60 years old, have a family history of glaucoma, or are an African American over the age of 40, you are at a much higher risk for developing glaucoma than the rest of the population. And it’s not just age and ethnicity that increase your risk—diabetes and high blood pressure are also risk factors for glaucoma. So, what is glaucoma? “Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease due to increased pressure in the eye that causes damage to the optic nerve over time,” says Dr. Richard Wong, board-certified Ophthalmologist at Zeiter Eye Medical Group who specializes in glaucoma treatment. “Most patients don’t notice any symptoms initially, but over time they can lose peripheral vision and eventually central vision.” Imagine looking at a photograph—a person with normal vision would see the photograph clearly. A person with moderate glaucoma, however, would only be able to see the center of the photo, with the edges blacked out. If left untreated, total blindness can occur. There are two major types of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma and narrow-angle glaucoma. “In open angle patients, the area between their cornea and their iris is wide open. In narrow-angle patients, the cornea and iris are closer together,” clarifies Dr. Wong. Right in the crux of this “angle” is the eye’s drainage system. In all glaucoma patients the aqueous humor liquid that nourishes the eye doesn’t drain efficiently, leading to a build-up of pressure. In open-angle glaucoma patients, the symptoms appear gradually over time—in narrow-angle patients, 22

2019 SJ HEALTH AND MEDICAL GUIDE
however, pressure can rise very quickly leading to an acute angle-closure glaucoma attack, for which you should seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms include sudden blurry-vision, eye-pain, headache, and nausea. If not
treated quickly, blindness can occur. At Zeiter Eye, Dr. Wong says the glaucoma treatments vary by the glaucoma type and severity, from eye drops, to Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, to Peripheral Iridotomy for narrow-angle patients. Thanks to breakthroughs in medicine, Zeiter Eye also can perform MIGS surgery (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery). “We can put in stents or use a special blade to do procedures that used to be a lot more invasive,” states Dr. Wong. “With MIGS, the healing time is a lot shorter.” If you think you could be a glaucoma suspect or are experiencing symptoms, call your local ophthalmologist for an eye exam today. OUT WITH THE GOUT: PREVENTION IS KEY
The old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is particularly true when it comes to gout pain. Gout is a form of arthritis, which may begin suddenly and result in severe pain, stiffness, and swelling of one or more joints. It occurs when high levels of uric acid in the blood cause crystals to form and accumulate in and around a joint. Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down a chemical called purine. Purine occurs naturally in your body, but it’s also found in certain food items. While genetics can make a gout attack more or less likely, there are other gout triggers that you can and should control.
1. Avoid High Purine Foods
Examples of high-purine foods include seafood, shellfish, and some meats such as bacon, turkey, veal, venison, and organ meats like liver. Some alcoholic beverages (i.e. beer) contain high levels of purine and can lead to increased uric acid levels in the blood. Drinking alcohol of any type can trigger a gout attack because it decreases the kidneys’ ability to filter uric acid and the more alcohol consumed, the bigger the chance of a gout attack. Bottom line: people predisposed to gout should drink as little as possible.
2. Cut Down on Your Weight
Being overweight or obese quadruples your likelihood of gout because of higher circulating levels of uric acid in the blood. Losing weight also helps lower your uric acid levels and reduces your risk of future gout attacks. But how much weight should you lose? Studies suggest that a weight loss of about eight pounds or more led to long-term reductions in uric acid levels and gout attacks in overweight or obese people.
3. Steer Clear of Soda and other Sweets High fructose corn syrup is a culprit in raising uric acid levels and increasing gout risk. Several 12-ounce servings of regular soda have been shown to increase uric acid in both men and women. People at risk for gout should either switch to diet soda (which does not contain high fructose corn syrup) or limit regular soda to no more than one 12-ounce serving a day. It’s also worth noting that high fructose corn syrup can be found in many fruit drinks, store-bought baked goods, ice cream, candy, processed fast food, breakfast cereals, and other items, so read labels carefully to spare yourself the pain of a gout flair up.

ST. JOSEPH’S USHERS in NEW ERA with PHYSICIAN RESIDENCY PROGRAM
With an alarming ratio of 39 primary care doctors per 100,000 residents, it’s clear that San Joaquin County is suffering from a serious shortage of physicians. Aware that this issue was only getting worse, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center took it upon themselves to work on solving that problem by starting a graduate medical education program right at their hospital. A graduate medical education program, better known as a residency, is the process which follows the completion of medical school. Freshly minted doctors match with a hospital, enter a program of their choosing, and are trained in that specialty. Depending on the specialty, residencies range between three to five years. 26

2019 SJ HEALTH AND MEDICAL GUIDE
BY CAITLIN HAMER / D RAMIZ HADDAD
“It’s a huge investment in our community,” says Donald Wiley, President and CEO at St. Joseph’s, going on to explain the far-reaching benefits of such a program – a program which is the only one of its kind in this area. First, residency programs need instructors, which allows the hospital to recruit physicians highly skilled in their field of specialty. “They’ll not only be training the residents, but will also be practicing medicine, caring for people in our community,” he explains. And then, of course, there are the residents themselves. In the inaugural class in July 2018, there were 15 residents; six in family medicine, and nine in emergency medicine. Programs in internal medicine and obstetrics-gynecology will begin in July 2019. Within seven years, once the program is fully up
and running, they will have 184 residents in 12 specialties, including psychiatry, urology, and anesthesiology. Yet beyond offering a stellar residency program, the impact that St. Joseph’s hopes this will have is an influx of new physicians to the Central Valley. “We have a lot of complex patient care needs and a community that has a need for more physicians,” states Donald. “We’re hoping that we’ll end up retaining a significant percentage of these residents within a 50-mile radius of our training center.” With hundreds of applicants vying for the coveted positions since the start of the program, it’s safe to say that it’s already a success. And to increase the likelihood that the physicians will stay upon completing their residency, St. Joseph’s has been looking for applicants that are from California. This July, twelve out of fifteen of their new residents will meet that criteria. “These residents develop every single year they’re here,” says Donald. “By the time they’re done, their qualifications give our community a tremendous amount of additional resources.”

NOT MILK? DIVING INTO POPULAR MILK SUBSTITUTES
It’s impossible to avoid the many new “milk” selections popping up in the dairy aisle today—soy, almond, coconut, oat, hemp, cashew—the list goes on. Milk substitutes are a great option if you’re avoiding animal products, counting calories, or are lactose-intolerant. So before you start sipping, take a look at how some of these popular nondairy beverages stack-up.
Soy Milk
Soy milk has been around for quite some time, but has become increasingly popular in the last decade. The taste is smooth with a slight “beany” aftertaste that may seem overpowering when consumed on its own. Some studies have shown that an over-consumption of soy phytoestrogens (plant-based hormones) may interfere with your own hormones while others say it has a protective effect on breast cancer.
QUICK TAKEAWAYS:
NUTRITION: NUTRITIONALLY, it is
Coconut Milk
similar to traditional milk when it comes to being higher in both protein and calcium.
Tip: With soybeans being one of the highest produced genetically modified organism (GMO) crops, look for an organic, non-GMO brand of soy milk.
QUICK TAKEAWAYS: • Low Calorie • High Protein • High Calcium
ALMOND MILK
Almond milk is naturally free of cholesterol, saturated fat, and lactose. It is also rich in vitamins such as Vitamins D, E, and E. Unsweetened almond milk is a low-calorie, dairy-free alternative that many people prefer (taste-wise) over others due to its smooth and mild flavor.
Nutrition: There is less protein than cow’s milk, but it’s a good source of magnesium and Vitamin D (when fortified).
Tip: It is quite simple to make if you need a quick version – just blend almond butter with coconut water or plain H2O. 28

2019 SJ HEALTH AND MEDICAL GUIDE
• Low Calorie • Low Protein • Similar Calcium to Milk Coconut milk contains high levels of saturated fat, and is rich in vitamins and minerals. The milk is a thick consistency with a rich, creamy texture and has a slight coconut flavor. It is popular in coffee creamers since it delivers a richer mouthfeel.
Nutrition: About 93% of
its calories come from fat, including medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which may increase metabolism and help boost weight loss.
TIP: Many coconut milk brands use natural and artificial flavors and starches to mimic traditional milk so be sure to look for a brand with minimal ingredients.
Quick Takeaways: • High Calorie • Low Protein • Low Carb
What Milk is best for me?
Taste buds aside, the most important thing when choosing your milk is to think about what you are looking to get out of it. Read the labels, figure out what your goal is as far as the role of milk in your diet, and talk to your doctor to assess any allergies and/or nutritional deficiencies.

EATING for a HEALTHIER HEART BY DEIRDRE CARLSON
Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women and claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined. While weight control and regular exercise are both critical to maintain a healthy heart, a heart-healthy diet (along with other heart healthy lifestyle choices) may reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by 80 percent. According to Dr. Ramin Manshadi of the Manshadi Heart Institute in Stockton and President of the California Chapter of American College of Cardiology, “there are many factors that can lead to heart attack and stroke, but diet is one of the most important ones. Bottom line, you are what you eat.”
THREE KEYS TO A HEART HEALTHY DIET
1
Steer Clear of Salt
Eating a lot of salt can contribute to high blood pressure which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends no more than a teaspoon of salt a day for an adult. That may sound small, but there are many painless—even delicious—ways to reduce your sodium intake. Avoid processed foods that are high in salt and opt for spices in place of salt when you cook. Try fresh herbs like basil, thyme, or chives, or dried spices like allspice, bay leaves, or cumin to flavor your meal.
2
Be Smart with your Fats
Cut out trans fats. As well as raising your LDL, or “bad” cholesterol level which can increase your risk for heart attack and stroke, trans fat also lowers your levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol. Trans fats are found in foods such as commercially-baked goods, fried food, and anything with “partially hydrogenated” oil in the ingredients. Eating foods rich in monounsaturated and poly-

unsaturated fat can improve blood cholesterol levels and lower your risk of heart disease. Some foods containing heart healthy fats are salmon, herring, flaxseed, and walnuts. Other sources of healthy fats include olive oil, avocados, nuts, and nut butters. Dr. Manshadi recommends the use of olive oil and always adds it to his breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
3
Cut Back on Sugar
The average American currently consumes around 17 teaspoons (68 grams) of added sugar per day. Instead of sugary soft drinks, white bread, and pasta, opt for unrefined whole grains like whole wheat or multigrain bread, brown rice, barley, quinoa, bran cereal, oatmeal, and non-starchy vegetables. And be aware of how much sugar is added to products such as pasta sauce, ketchup, and BBQ sauce. ALL ABOUT
ALOPECIA
BY MEGAN MEINTASIS
HAIR LOSS TREATMENT OPTIONS Hair loss isn’t fun for anyone— it’s frustrating, frightening, and can take a toll on your emotions. If you experience hair loss in unpredictable round patches usually about the size of a coin, you may have alopecia. Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder thought to be caused by stress and results in the above-mentioned pattern of hair loss. One of the most common characteristics of alopecia is the presence of short hairs that gradually get narrower along the length of the strand surrounding the bald patches. These hairs are often referred to as “exclamation point” hairs. Although there is no known cure for the disorder, there are treatment options that can help. The most commonly prescribed treatment is Corticosteroids - an immune suppressing solution that can be injected into the region experiencing hair loss, or in some cases applied topically to bald spots. Patients treated for alopecia with Corticosteroids receive injections every 3 to 6 weeks, and hair growth

can usually be expected to begin after about 4 weeks. A more permanent and immediate solution is Scalp Micropigmentation. This popular new hair loss treatment results in incredibly natural looking micro hairs that cover the scalp. “With Micropigmentation, there is no downtime like a surgery - you walk in, get it done, and are able to walk out with a new-found confidence,” says Lisa Rigsbee of San Joaquin’s ScalpMasters Clinic. “You get a lot for your money: the treatment is permanent, quick, affordable and safe.” Using a small needle, impressions are made with organic ink specifically formulated for the skin. In contrast to hair transplantation, Micropigmentation results in no scarring and can be done on the entire scalp, eliminating the issue of migrating bald spots, and resulting in a completely camouflaged scalp.

“In the hair restoration industry, this is such a life changing option,” states Lisa. “It’s permanent, affordable, fast and safe.” At ScalpMasters, the primary focus is to provide a safe and comfortable environment where customers can be treated and ultimately gain back confidence in their appearance. With Scalp Micropigmentation, those with alopecia are able to enjoy the California sunshine and everything else that life has to offer without fear of judgement. mobility BY ALEXANDRA KRUEGER
CHOOSING the RIGHT
MOBILITY AID Choosing the correct mobility aid can mean the difference between living independently or depending on others for one’s daily needs. Whether you’re needing a mobility aid for yourself or shopping around for someone you love, it’s important to recognize that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Luckily, technology has advanced so much in this field that there’s a wide variety of options for you to choose from. “There are so many options nowadays verses 15 years ago,” says Karter McKinlay, President of The Bone Store. “We carry a wide variety, ranging from canes, to power mobility seating.” Specializing in pain alleviation of all kinds, The Bone Store provides everything to help you walk, move, sit, and sleep better. Their attentive staff can help you find exactly the kind of mobility aid you need in order to get around more efficiently. “For example, one of the things we look at with a walker is not just sizing of the handle but the seat height,” explains Karter. “We also ask ‘Where is the walker being used? How is it being used?’ It will determine the size of wheels and other aspects of the equipment.” Aside from your standard walkers, canes, and power chairs, recent twoin-one technology has resulted in little miracles like the Drive Duet. “It’s a hybrid between a walker and a transport chair,” says Karter. “Walkers are

nice, but they don’t allow anyone to push you. With the Drive Duet, the customer can use it as a walker and when they get tired, they can modify it into a rolling chair.” If you’re in the market for a cane, there are even more options to choose from. “The cane industry really changed a few years ago, when the “HurryCane” appeared on the scene,” says Karter, referring to the revolutionary self-standing folding cane with a pivoting base. “Today there are self-standing canes, folding canes, travel canes, canes with seats, canes with ergonomic handles, etc.” With so many options to choose from, consulting a professional as well as trying out different options for yourself will be the best indicator of which mobility aid is right for you. “Our focus, our logo, and our motto is all about improving the way you walk, move, sit, and sleep,” states Karter. “Our approach is to develop effective strategies to promote health and wellness in those three categories and mobility is a big part of that.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: THE BONE STORE Multiple Locations (209) 720-7500 TheBoneStore.com

23 neonatal intensive care unit beds to take up the wing’s first floor, giving the hospital accommodations to treat newborns that need additional care without transfer to other hospitals and expand its existing neonatal services. The second floor will include 20 upgraded medical and surgical beds in modern private rooms, providing more comfortable accommodations to patients who need to stay overnight at the hospital. Additional features include upgraded se-
curity, an improved nurse call system, and the addition of state-of-the-art communication technology. Overall the new wing will act as an update to many of the hospital services that were originally offered in the back building, built in 1934. The original building will become the new hub for administrative offices, record keeping, and other needs as determined in the future. The new building will be adjoined to the original hospital building on the south side allowing for easy access between the new units and the rest of the hospital. San Joaquin General Hospital is a leading general acute care facility that provides a full range of inpatient services including general medical and surgical care, high-risk obstetrics and neonatal intensive care, and pediatrics. San Joaquin General Hospital is also San Joaquin County’s designated Level III trauma center handling over 500 trauma cases each month. The Hospital is also a teaching hospital with residents earning board certifications in internal medicine, family medicine and general surgery. Many of the nations leading surgeons and medical researchers visit San Joaquin General’s residency program each year. The medical campus also provides outpatient services at multiple facilities including primary care, specialty clinics, and a primary care walk-in clinic, operated under San Joaquin County Clinics. The Hospital and Clinic’s Ambulatory Care Network provides over 200,000 outpatient clinic visits annually. San Joaquin General will be celebrating its New Acute Care Wing grand opening later this summer. VISIT US:

WHAT IS YOUR SKIN TELLING YOU?
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and it can be the first indication that something isn’t quite right inside. Pay attention to changes in skin to keep an eye on overall health. Those recent breakouts or sudden rash most likely are not cause for concern, but it could be an indication that you need to make some lifestyle changes or even visit a doctor to be sure.
SKIN RASH
Many skin rashes are caused by allergy, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. There is a possibility, however, that your skin rash is a sign of illness. Some infections can cause suspect skin rashes. If you see a rash that doesn’t clear up quickly or is accompanied by other symptoms, see a doctor. It could be measles, chicken pox, ringworm, jock itch, or an STI.
DRY SKIN
Many people are genetically predisposed to having dry skin, which means your skin produces less natural oils than those with combination, normal, or oily skin. However, in some cases dry skin is a sign of hormonal imbalance or underactive thyroid. If your skin becomes dry, but hasn’t always been dry, and there isn’t a clear reason why, visit your doctor for a blood test to rule these conditions out.
DEHYDRATED SKIN
Dehydrated skin looks and feels like dry skin, but it isn’t quite the same. Dehydrated skin needs more water. This is the result of lifestyle choices, not genetics. The best way to fix it is to drink more water, avoid caffeine and alcohol, and eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
SCALY PATCHES.
Patches of skin that are dry or scaly could be harmless. Lotion up and see if the spots go away. For some, however, these patches are an indication of skin cancer. If you’re worried or if your family has a history of skin cancer, get it checked out. Skin cancer can also appear in irregular moles.
PURPLE OR RED DOTS.
Bleeding into the skin causes dots known as petechiae or purpura. In most cases they are the result of an injury; however, they can be signs of something more severe happening. If you develop these spots but can’t recall an injury that caused them, or if the spots are swollen or painful, seek medical attention. In rare cases, this is a sign of a medical emergency. 38

THE GENDER
CHOICE:
WITH TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION, THE CHOICE IS YOURS. BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Forget old wives tales that claim to help families choose a baby’s gender. Diet changes and the timing of sexual intercourse most likely won’t help fulfill your dreams of birthing a boy or girl. Want to accurately dictate the gender of your next child? Well, thanks to science, where there is a Will, or a Wilma, there’s a way! Actually—there are a few. In-vitro fertilization and artificial insemination give parents the option to choose whether they get pregnant with a boy or a girl. But why would someone subject herself to this involved process simply to choose the gender of her next baby? For many, IVF and AI are necessary for conception anyway due to fertility issues. If a family needs to undergo fertility treatments to get pregnant, it might not make a big difference to add the gender identifying testing to the protocol. During the procedure, doctors test the embryos and only plant either male or female embryos at the parent’s request. Some parents feel that if they can only have one child due to the cost constraints of fertility treatments they want to choose the gender of that baby. Other people without fertility issues decide to undergo IVF or AI for the sole

purpose of selecting gender. But why? For some, genetic issues are gender-specific. If there is a risk of passing down a rare genetic condition to only one gender, parents may choose to skip the chance. Other parents participate in family balancing. This means they have a boy or girl child already and want to complete the family with a child of the other sex. If they feel strongly enough, some clinics will allow for this type of selection as long as parents have another child of the other gender at home. If you’re interested in genetic selection for a non-medical reason, clinics can complete a test called preimplantation genetic screening, or PGS. If the test is done to determine chromosomal abnormalities, it is called preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD. Both tests can both be used to determine the sex of embryos before they are implanted. It’s important to understand that most clinics have rules on genetic selection. Some frown upon the procedure for any reason other than a medically necessary one, while others may screen for fertility before agreeing to IVF or AI in order to deter patients from using the services for the sole purpose of choosing gender.

NOT ALL
VITAMINS are CREATED EQUAL BY DEIRDRE CARLSON
Vitamins are like an insurance policy. You take them because they give you a baseline of nutrients to serve as a backup to your (mostly) healthy diet. However, not all are created equal, and there are some that are definitely better for you than others. The process is made even more complicated by contradicting information and misleading advertising. So how do you know which type or brand to choose?
HERE ARE FIVE IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING YOUR NEXT BOTTLE.
1
Make sure they are tested by a 3rd party
Keep in mind that the vitamin and supplement industry is not regulated the way that the pharmaceutical industry is. Currently, there’s no standard or regulatory definition for vitamins or dietary supplements. Simply stated, manufacturers aren’t required to gain FDA approval before making or selling them. So your best bet is to buy vitamins and supplements that have been tested for safety and purity by a third party. Look for these letters on the label: USP, NSF, or GMP.
2
Look for activated forms of nutrients
Some of the best vitamins on the market contain nutrients that have already been converted into their active forms. For instance, vitamin B6 (important for hormonal balance), can be taken as pyridoxine, the inactive form, or pyridoxine 5-phosphate, the active form (abbreviated as P-5-P on a label). When you take the active form of a nutrient, your body is able to absorb more of it and at a faster rate.

3
Beware of additives and fillers
Make sure your vitamin doesn’t contain added synthetic colors, fillers, and ingredients that you don’t recognize or understand. Vitamin makers often add these compounds to extend a product’s shelf life, or to make it less expensive to manufacture. It’s always best to buy clean, natural products that are made from whole food sources.
4
Don’t take supplements on an empty stomach
Pro Tip: Don’t take supplements on an empty stomach. Popping your vitamins before breakfast can make you feel nauseated. Just as important: If you’re taking fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, it’s best to have a little food with fat in it at the same time— say, avocado toast. The fat will help your body absorb the vitamins and minerals. WHERE TO LOOK: HAMMER LANE PHARMACY 2339 W. Hammer Ln., Ste J, Stockton (209) 477-7100 HammerLanePharmacy.com

MAKES STRIDES STATE-OF-THE-ART KNEE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM CUTS PATIENT RECOVERY TIME IN HALF BY NORA HESTON TARTE
leaving this tendon intact, post-surgical pain and complications are reduced, patients are mobile just a few hours after surgery, and the need for intravenous drugs is often eliminated. “We use multiple anesthetic techniques before, during and after surgery to significantly decrease pain and swelling caused by joint replacement surgery,” says Dr. Mikaelian. “Our patients are able to walk several feet within a few hours of surgery and experience much less pain than traditional knee replacement surgery.” Technology is at the forefront of the Rapid Strides program. Dr. Mikaelian uses a hand-held computerized alignment tool to help him achieve precise and accurate positioning of the knee replacement implants. The device uses the same advanced navigation and guidance technologies that the aerospace and defense industries use. With a smaller incision and reduced line of sight, the equipment makes the difference, and accurate positioning is another way in which post-surgical pain and complications are reduced.
The average recovery time of a knee replacement surgery used to be somewhere around three months. Today, Dameron Hospital in Stockton is offering state-of-theart knee replacement procedures that cut recovery times in half. Dameron Hospital launched its Rapid Strides Accelerated Recovery Knee Replacement Program two years ago and became the first hospital in the San Joaquin and Stanislaus county area to offer the minimally invasive knee replacement procedure and accelerated recovery and rehabilitation process. In this period of time nearly 200 patients have participated in the program. The advanced surgical procedure allows for less pain 44

KAISER PERMANENTE
TAKES on DIABETES BY NORA HESTON TARTE
In the Central Valley, roughly one in every three adult patients is diabetic. In the United States, more than 20 million people have diabetes. In most cases it isn’t the diabetes that poses the biggest risk, it’s the end organ damage, the heart attacks, and the strokes that ultimately take lives. Kaiser Permanente Central Valley recognized the problem and started a series of programs to delay organ damage, slow disease progression, and prevent diabetes in pre-diabetic patients. As a result, Kaiser physicians have reduced the percentage of heart attacks in patients (diabetic or not) by more than 50 percent. Nationally, there was a 22 percent reduction in the same time period. 46
|
2019 SJ HEALTH AND MEDICAL GUIDE
“The key for us was really about not only improving the wellness of the diabetic member but ultimately ending disease progression,” says Dr. Issa Fakhouri, diabetes lead for Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. A short visit with a primary care physician isn’t enough to treat diabetes patients. So, Kaiser began training pharmacists in diabetes care as clinical physician extenders. These clinicians free up primary physician time by providing frequent check-ins, monitoring assistance, and health education to patients with diabetes. Diabetes programming at Kaiser isn’t onesize-fits-all. “We have different resources for the different age groups and for the different
types of diabetes,” Dr. Fakhouri says. There are different classes for pediatric and adult cases, type 1 and type 2, and the level of disease from pre-diabetes to end stage. The mission is simple: No member will ever suffer disease progression because Kaiser has failed to test or treat them. The Health Education department is in on the initiative, too. Under this department, registered dieticians and health educators join physicians in providing diabetes management resources including classes on dietary management, monitoring glucose levels, and more. With a team behind them, diabetes patients are better equipped to handle illness and stay in front of complications related to diabetes. In fact, if a patient visits any Kaiser facility, including a specialist’s office, they will be reminded of overdue tests or screenings that need to be completed. The network is completely interconnected to keep patients accountable. Advances in infrastructure and technology make it possible. For example, glucometers are linked electronically so patients can email readings directly to physicians without coming into the office. Early intervention is also key. At Kaiser, physicians don’t wait for diabetics to land on the registry. Instead, they intervene immediately, keeping patients ahead on management and providing care at the first sign of diabetes. LODI MEMORIAL WELCOMES NEW LIFE with their LEVEL II NICU BY CAITLIN HAMER
Rounding out the staff are the nurses, who had specialty training at UC Davis. “We also have telemedicine with UC Davis,” explains Maternal-Child Services Manager Kathy Wold. “We have this with other departments, too, but with the NICU, if we’re expecting a difficult delivery with a bad outcome, we can use telemedicine to have a specialist assess and direct the care and then send their team.” Already, the NICU is making great strides, with Valerie sharing this exciting statistic: “In February, we transferred no babies. We were able to keep them all here.” And in March, the NICU celebrated its first “graduation”, complete with NICU babies in little caps and gowns. “Kathy and I are incredibly proud of our staff and what we’ve done,” says Valerie. “We are grateful to the Lodi Memorial Hospital Foundation for raising money to buy top of the line equipment for our Level II NICU.” FOR MORE INFORMATION:
ADVENTIST HEALTH LODI MEMORIAL
Nearly 1,100 babies are delivered every year at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial, and up until recently, 10 to 15 percent of those newborns had to be transferred out for medical care that couldn’t be provided in Lodi. Now, thanks to a partnership with UC Davis, they are proud to offer the services of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). NICUs are dedicated to providing the highest quality care for premature and high-risk infants and are equipped with the most up to date technology and equipment. Adventist Health Lodi Memorial’s new unit will allow nearly 200 local moms, babies, and families to stay together after deliveries that previously would have required mom or baby to be transferred to Sacramento via ambulance or helicopter. “Our goal is to keep moms and babies 48

together,” says Valerie Stump, Maternal Child Services Director at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial. “Now we’re able to keep more babies here, which allows parents to be closer to home for support.” As Lodi’s only Level II NICU, the impact of this development has been massive. They received their licensing in December and have been caring for mothers and babies alike since. “One of the things we used to have to do is transfer mothers out,” explains Valerie. “Moms would come in at 35 weeks pregnant and we’d transfer them to a different hospital. We can now keep them here.” The NICU team consists of a head neonatologist and pediatric hospitalists from UC Davis, with a multidisciplinary team consisting of respiratory therapy, dietary, speech, and physical therapy.

5 PRACTICES TO HELP YOU AGE WELL Your lifestyle is a major determinant of how well you’ll age – and we’re not talking about wrinkles or a lack thereof. If you acknowledge that you can continue to grow as you transition into your senior years, then aging doesn’t have to be about decline. With these five tips courtesy of Dr. Roger Landry, author of Live Long, Die Short: A Guide to Authentic Health and Successful Aging, plus further advice from a wellness expert from O’Connor Woods, you can start bringing these practices into your life and enjoy your golden years as you deserve!
1. Keep Moving. While exercise
is undoubtedly important, this can also simply mean ensuring you’re not sedentary. “Of all the potential benefits of physical movement, the one you should never underestimate is how good regular movement with a purpose could make you feel. It has positive effects on your physical and mental health,” shares Nanci Shaddy, Director of Fitness and Wellness at the Wellness Connection at O’Connor Woods in Stockton.
2. Challenge Your Brain. As people
age, they can become less active, both physically and mentally. But you’re never too old to learn something new! “It is important to encourage old-
BY CAITLIN HAMER
senior
er adults to engage in activities that challenge their brains because engaging the brain often results in physical and emotional rejuvenation,” says Nanci.
3. Never Act Your Age. “We’re told
to do that our entire lives,” says Dr. Landry. “To ‘act our age’ when we’re older is to conform to the stereotype of aging as only about decline. As long as we have a pulse, we can grow.”
4. Find Your Purpose. It may seem
like once the kids are gone and you enter retirement that there’s not much to do. If you feel that way, find something. “It’s important that we’re excited to get out of bed in the morning,” urges Dr. Landry, who suggests finding something that not only benefits your life, but others’ lives as well, such as community activities. “Golfing and fishing don’t cut it.”
5. Wherever You Are, Be There.
It’s easy to let our chattering minds rule the show, but this prevents us from truly living in the moment, and in turn creates stress. “Be present,” instructs Dr. Landry. “We inherited stress as a survival mechanism, but our brains have evolved it into something detrimental.” Engage in relaxing activities that put you in the moment and make it a practice to let go of unnecessary stress.

women’s health
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
THE NEW KIND of HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY During menopause, a woman’s estrogen levels fall, which can cause negative side effects including difficulty sleeping, low libido, skin issues, brain fog, low energy, poor bone health, poor body composition, and poor heart health. To reverse these side effects, and get women feeling more like themselves, many turn to hormone replacement therapy to increase estrogen levels. While this medical breakthrough has helped many women, it wasn’t a perfect procedure. Hormone replacement therapy often involves creams or patches of synthetic hormones. Issues with transference—the hormones getting transferred to others through physical touch—as well as complications related to synthetic hormones became a concern. National guidelines even suggested woman not use synthetic hormones for more than five years in a row. While traditional hormone replacement therapy is still a viable option, a new kind of therapy entered the market. Bio identical hormone replacement reduces some

of the risks associated with traditional hormone replacement therapy including cancer and blood clots. This overall hormone replacement therapy includes reviews of thyroid, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone and works well in both preand post-menopausal women. The results can be life changing. “It improves their relationships,” says Dr. Ruby Gill, medical director at the Gill Medical Group and Gill Aesthetic Institute. At Gill Medical Group, hormone
blood draws are done in the office, offering convenience. After which, if hormone replacement therapy is recommended, patients can receive a customized hormone replacement plan that includes bioTE pellet therapy. In this short office based procedure, “small high grade pellets containing the exact customized amount of hormone needed for the patient are implanted under the skin,” Dr. Ruby Gill explains. “Your body naturally utilizes the hormones
in sync with your physical activity. As a result, hormones are released more physiologically, instead of on an arbitrary time release like synthetic hormones.” BioTE pellet therapy typically lasts between 3-6 months and therefore eliminates the inconvenience of synthetic hormone shots and patches, in addition to the transference risks of creams. With pellet therapy, implants last four to six months at a time and there is no fear of transference because the hormones are planted under the skin. In addition to feeling better, improving relationships, and being healthier overall, the risk of heart disease goes down. “Women that are pre-menopausal have a cardiovascular risk that is 1 out of 7,” Dr. Ruby Gill. Post-menopausal women’s risk rises to one out of three. “That’s all due to hormone levels.” GET CHECKED: GILL MEDICAL GROUP Multiple locations in San Joaquin (209) 334-0799 GillMed.com

Our goal is to care for your dental health while making everything as convenient, comfortable, and economical as possible. Today’s high technology allows dental work to be done in much less time and with minimal expense, but still provides long lasting, aesthetic restorations. Experience for yourself our family-like atmosphere and personal service. Priscilla from Modesto says, “I couldn’t believe I got my cosmetic work done in one appointment, with no temporaries.” John from Stockton says, “I’ve had root canals and crowns done before, but I’ve never had a root canal and crown done in one visit. I’ll never go back to the old way of fixing teeth.” Brian from Missouri says, “I was in Stockton with a dental emergency and Dr. Noriesta fixed my tooth in one appointment. I couldn’t find a dentist like Dr. Noriesta in Missouri, so I drove back to Stockton and got the rest of my crowns done in one appointment.”

2019 SJ HEALTH AND MEDICAL GUIDE
At the Brookside Optometric Group we get it that the honor is that people allow us to see them, not for them to be allowed to see us. We get it that people live busy lives and need appointments that are not necessarily between the hours of 9 and 5 Monday through Friday, hate having to endure long waits for their doctor only to be seen by a technician followed by a brief 3-minute meet and greet by their doctor, and that people want answers to their questions instead of a simple pat on the head as they are being handed a prescription. We provide extended hours for our patients, technologically-advanced equipment to better care for our patients, an in-house lab, access to any and all contact lenses necessary to fit any need and a frame inventory of over 1,500 frames to suit any desired style. Most importantly we wanted to create an environment where our patients would be seen on time, have time with their doctors for a very thorough examination and have any and all questions answered, whether that be for routine eye care or LASIK candidacy, and to be treated like family.

In 2003, Karter and his father, Robert McKinlay, purchased The Bone Store from its founders. The founders – an orthotist and chiropractor – opened the first store in Fresno in 1996. Since 2003, The Bone Store has added two additional locations in Visalia and Stockton, respectively, all under Karter’s watch. While you won’t find any bones at The Bone Store, you will find walkers, recliners, shoes, pillows, cushions, beds, and more, all of which has been cautiously selected, constantly reviewed, and carefully protected. “We simply want to help in a market that has a great need and is growing every day.” While Robert has since retired, Karter remains actively involved in the day-to-day operations of all three stores, with no plan on quitting soon. “This is my passion,” says Karter, “to grow, build, and serve.” His invitation? SEXUAL HEALTH CHECKLIST BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Sexual health is important at every age. Throughout our lives it’s important to get regular check-ups, screenings and vaccines in order to stay healthy. Learn when it’s time to get each of these appointments for yourself and your children—and then schedule any you may have missed! Sexual health can be a sensitive topic for many, but it’s not a good reason to fall behind and make yourself susceptible to related medical problems.

ogists recommend getting a pap smear every 3-5 years, starting at age 21. After a few normal ones, you may be able to go less often. However, certain risk factors mean you should get them more often. Ask you gynecologist for specifics and be open and honest about your sexual habits.
Age: When you become sexually active To Do: Routine HIV and STD testing. It is smart for all adolescents and adults who are sexually active to get tested often. How often you get tested depends a lot on your sexual activity, but annual tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis is a good rule of thumb, plus at least once for HIV. New partners or practicing unsafe sex are good reasons to get tested more often.

TREATING ANXIETY
WITH
CBD OIL If it suddenly seems like you’re seeing CBD oil everywhere, it’s not just you – this wellness product has become the latest health trend, popping up in everything from food to beverages to cosmetics. And while studies on CBD are still in their early stages, many people have been touting its health benefits, particularly for anxiety. So, what exactly is CBD? For starters, yes, it does have something to do with cannabis; no, it won’t get you high. CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, is a non-addictive, non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants. And due to the recent legalization of recreational cannabis in California, CBD is legal to purchase and use. The range of CBD products has vastly grown in the past few years, ranging from pain relief lotions to calming lattes infused with CBD oil. But when it comes to anxiety relief, many have relied upon tried and true methods of consumption. Vape pens offer the fastest relief, but the effect wears off more quickly than something like a tincture or an edible, which will last for several hours but won’t kick in as swiftly. As for how exactly CBD can help you manage your anxiety, some research

suggests that CBD may influence receptors in your brain that are involved in the modulation of serotonin, a chemical which is thought to play a role in the regulation of anxiety. Already, at least one study has proven that it does have a positive effect on social anxiety. Like with any health product, make sure to be discerning when you buy – most experts agree that you should only buy CBD products that have been third party tested, which will ensure that the dosage on the label is exactly as claimed. And speaking of dosage, it may take a little bit of experimentation before you find the right amount for your and your level of anxiety. Of course, there’s a time and place to experiment with CBD – this is a substance that should be used responsibly. While most people react favorably to it, there’s always a small percentage of those who

do not. Be aware of side effects like dry mouth, drowsiness, or dizziness. When starting any new supplement, it’s vital to ensure that it won’t interact with any medications you’re already on, so make sure to speak with your doctor and mental health professional before you decide to try CBD for your anxiety.
