So, what makes a wonder woman? Is she a doctor or a lawyer, a big wig or a CEO? Or does her impact reach far beyond the dress suit she wears to work each day and the role she plays there? The thing about Wonder Woman is, she was also Army Nurse Diana Prince. In addition to her already honorable career, she decided to take on saving the world. This year’s group of women is on the same mission—to improve our community through not just their job, but also their extra curricular activities. Volunteering with (or even founding) impactful charities like With Our Words, Pretty Lady Sisterhood, Haven of Peace, Hospice of San Joaquin, and more, these leading ladies go beyond the call of duty, each a warrior of her own regard, paving the path to success for non-profits and community initiatives, revitalization projects, and so much more. Join them as they conquer the hurdles our region must face, and learn the stories of how they’ve evolved to become advocates for those that need a helping hand. The womanpower is strong this edition, as we also showcase a plethora of local ladies working in a variety of industries. Take a look into the lives of the women who make our county go round. Barbara Daly has moved from on-air personality to behind-the-camera talent. The Stockton videographer who runs the video production company Daly Video Services got her start as an on-air reporter in Santa Rosa, El Paso, and Tucson. When her husband landed an on-air reporting gig for Channel 10 in Sacramento, the duo moved their family to Stockton and Barbara shifted focus. She filled the spaces in between parenting—if those even exist—with video projects. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

Over the last 25 years Barbara has added hundreds of videos to her resume, representing works in nonprofits, commercials, and internal business productions. Daly Video Services is behind both the series of videos created for the City of Stockton’s Stockton is Home project and the four-minute video recently shown at the Emergency Food Bank’s donor appreciation breakfast. “The key is always storytelling,” she says. Nonprofit videos, mainly three to five minute packages showcased at fundraisers and shared online to encourage donors to give to a cause, make up the bulk of the workload. Barbara’s first big client, St. Mary’s Dining Room—a nonprofit organization that continues to use Daly Video Services 25 years later— gave Barbara her start in Stockton’s tight-knit nonprofit world. “We focus not on a director or a CEO but on people who have benefitted from the organization,” Barbara explains. “We get to the heart of their story and that helps people understand the good work being done.” For years, Barbara created her videos alone, but in 2016 Tim retired from his on-air gig and joined the family business. Together they continue to produce videos that add to their collection of stories about remarkable people in the region. “I’ve waited for years to have his talent on board,” Barbara says. Barbara says she was able to organically grow her business because of Tim’s support. Tim, of course, insists it’s Barbara’s talents that got Daly Video Services where it is today. Still, the low-pressure situation allowed her to value substance over a payday—at least to an extent. “He never asked me to bring home the bacon,” Barbara laughs. It’s not lost on us that today her business provides both of their bacon. Working in TV news, Barbara built the talents she needed to become a successful videographer. “We get in some really delicate conversations and not being afraid to ask a question comes along with the news background,” Barbara says. She also learned to write, edit, and shoot, on the job, skills that allow Barbara to offer full packages, including sound mixing and voiceovers, at a fair price. Tim brings his own lessons from more than 30 years in television. He says, “being in news you are trained to work fast and efficient and accurate. News creates efficiency.” Just like the news, for every video the duo creates a timeline, writes a script, and makes a plan. It’s presented to and approved by the company purchasing the services. Once Barbara and Tim get started, those plans often go out the window, but the results are the same: 32

meaningful videos that encourage people to get involved in the community, whether it’s giving to the NICU at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial or joining neighbors at the annual Asparagus Festival. It hasn’t always been easy to make it as a videographer in Stockton as work constantly ebbs and flows in the male-dominated profession. But Barbara has found her niche in nonprofits.

She says the seesawing once stressed her out, however Barbara has since learned to flow with the uncertainty. She knows to enjoy the quiet months instead of dread them because a busy month will always follow a slow one. “With any small business you’re always dealing with ups and downs and it’s no different in this business,” she says. Barbara relies on word of mouth marketing to gain new business. Tim puts it like this: “We like to think our videos speak for themselves.” One year, a donor told Barbara and Tim that their video inspired him to change his $500 contribution to the non-profit agency to $5,000. “I just love the process of learning about an organization that’s doing good in the community,” Barbara says. “To then turn that lesson into a compelling story is what it’s all about. We’re all just working to make the community better and that’s what I see as my role in doing these videos.” REACH OUT:

The women’s clothing boutique that opened under the name Stella Boutique across from Lodi’s Lakewood Plaza five years ago moved downtown last fall. The new location allowed owner Kelli Ann Knowles to double her retail space, bringing in home décor and men’s fashion to compliment her growing brand. She also hosts trunk shows and monthly wine tastings. “The Lodi community has embraced us in our original space from

the beginning but being downtown definitely feels more like home,” Kelli says. Inside Stella Mitchell, satin, chiffon, florals, and embellished denim take center stage, complimented by a variety of lightweight moto jackets, cardigans, and dusters. Above stacks of denim sits wine country chic décor while scented candles and potted plants find space between jewelry displays.

CANNABIS CULTURE In January 2018, California became the sixth state in the U.S. to allow licensed shops to sell marijuana to anyone 21 years and older with a state licensed ID or passport.

TECHNOLOGY, MAN! Cannabis can be consumed in a variety of ways, and with today’s technology, there’s really no need to ‘light up’ anymore.

Stockton is currently home to a handful of dispensaries that welcome the public to peruse and order from their vast menu of marijuana goodies that range from flowers and cookies to tinctures and oil. But, what does it all mean? If you’re new to the scene, we’re here to help! CANNABINOIDS This mouthful refers to a class of chemical compounds found in the cannabis (marijuana) plant that interact with receptors in the brain and body, including the central nervous system and the immune system. The two most discussed cannabinoids— Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and the cannabidiol cannabinoid, known as CBD—are of serious medical interest. The National Cancer Institute reports that, in addition to treating the side effects of cancer, cannabinoids’ possible effects include anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity, blocking cell growth, preventing the growth of blood vessels that supply tumors, and relieving muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis. THC Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the cannabinoid most known for its psychoactive effects, meaning, it gets you “high”! But, it’s also being clinically studied for its incredible medical benefits, including its ability to kill cancer cells. The National Institute on Drug Abuse 36

CBD has serious potential as treatment for arthritis, diabetes, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, autism, PTSD, and addiction—and its anti-cancer properties are currently being investigated at several academic research centers in the United States and around the world. FLOWERS Once medical marijuana took off, marijuana products became readily available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and packages that were new to many. ‘Flower’ refers

to the good ol’ fashion buds, or the part of the marijuana plant that is harvested and smoked (or used to create tinctures, oil, etc.). Flowers are sticky, sparkly, and fragrant (if you’ve got the good stuff.) INDICA Originating in Asia and the Middle East, Indica is a popular species of marijuana plant known for its relaxing effects and body high. The short and thick, broad-leafed plants are known to provide a sedating effect perfect for treating chronic pain and aches, stress and anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, and seizures. SATIVA Sativa refers to tall plants with narrow leaves, said to uplift and energize—promoting creativity and a sense of wellbeing. Hailing from Asia and South America, sativa is known for its ability to relieve headaches and migraines, reduce nausea, and treat depression.

VAPORIZERS ‘Vaping’ is like smoking, except the marijuana oil is heated instead of burned—making it a healthier alternative. Vape pens are available in all shapes and sizes, and one-time use cartridges of either THC, CBD, or a hybrid (a little bit of both) are available. TINCTURES As a liquid form of marijuana, tinctures are typically made with glycerin or alcohol, flavored, and then distributed via an eyedropper. Tinctures are available in different strains and milligram dosage. TOPICALS Lotions, creams, and even lip balms infused with cannabis are called topicals. Used to treat body pain, inflammation, and skin issues like Psoriasis, these natural beauty products reap serious benefits. Transdermal application is a form of natural, localized pain management.

Zzyzx may sound like a mythical place, but Dorene Willet promises it’s real. Formerly known as Soda Springs, it’s the spot Dorene got her start in jewelry making 15 years ago, attending a jewelry camp at the area’s Earth Science Center. Actually, Zzyzx, Calif. kind of sounds like a place you might go to play with gemstones and fine metals, learn stone carving, copper enameling, beading, and precious metal clay. “I couldn’t make my hands move fast enough or take as many classes as I wanted, and left there completely in love with the entire process,” Dorene shares of her experience. Every year since her family has returned to spend time together while Dorene refines her skills. Her pieces, often fashioned out of mixed metals, pearls, stones, crystals, glass, and leather, first caught the eye of some friends. Her business Hadar & Adara—Hebrew and Greek words for glory and beauty—was launched with an in-home jewelry show.

“This adventure came into a life of it’s own,” says Dorene. Over the years, Dorene has collected customers and friends. She’s met some of her favorite people and best customers through those early in-home shows, a practice she still indulges in seasonally. As her business grew organically, Dorene added craft fairs and Hospice fundraisers to her venues, as well as three retail shops. She has also continued with home shows. She’s honored to say many brides and wedding parties have donned her pieces on their big day. While every piece is a personal expression for Dorene, her favorite pieces are marriages of stones and leather. “I purchase most of my supplies once a year at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in February,” Dorene says. “I then supplement my inventory throughout the year by purchasing online from those vendors.” Sometimes she turned to Etsy and some other online vendors to find the supplies she needs. All of Dorene’s pieces are handcrafted and of high quality, available at an affordable price point to San Joaquin residents either through her Facebook page or in retail shops in California and Washington. “My jewelry is a very personal expression of who I am,” Dorene says.

DEPTHS AT MOANING CAVERN ADVENTURE PARK  BY COPPER WILLIAMS Imagine stepping underground and into a world that has never seen the light of day. That first hollow touch of cavern air, the echo engulfing your every intrepid footstep, and a low, eerie moan that crosses the walls and settles into your eardrums. In truth, this is the ultimate escapade for those seeking thrills off the beaten path without unexpected hazards. KOINONIA CRAFTS CARING FAMILIES THROUGH FOSTER-TO-ADOPT PROGRAM  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

When Richard Cardenas’ sister was having trouble with her son, he and partner Ted Hererra stepped in. Struggling in school and experiencing behavioral problems, the boy moved in with Ted and Richard. With their intervention, the nephew returned home. It 44

was a positive outcome, except Ted and Richard suddenly felt a void in their lives. “We kind of felt like empty nesters,” Richard says. To fill that void, Ted and Richard looked to adoption. They stumbled upon Koinonia, a statewide foster and foster-to-adopt agency with an office in Modesto, and

started the process. Over nine years, 18 kids have found a home with Ted and Richard. They’ve adopted a sibling set of four as well as another child and are hoping to add one or two more before calling it quits. Their oldest daughter would like a sister. “Our limit was going to be one,” Ted laughs. “Fostering kind of turned our lives upside down, but for the better.” The county allows for a family to adopt up to eight kids. “When you get families with the right heart, train them well, and support them, the changes they can create for hurting children are amazing,” says Jerry Johnson, associate executive director for Northern California Koinonia Family Service. Becoming a foster parent through Koinonia takes one year. Ted and Richard completed class hours, live scans, and endured interviews before they were approved. They still attend classes every other month, monthly meetings, and maintain CPR certifications. While Ted and Richard never go into a situation where adoption is not an option, more times than not, adoption hasn’t been the end result. “When you foster to adopt, you have to be tough,” Richard says. The inability to adopt a child often comes from parents or family members gaining custody. Sometimes it’s a poor fit for the existing family. Once, Ted and Richard advocated for a familial home because they knew it was best for the child. One of the hardest situations included a baby they took home from the hospital and had for 72 days. Families who foster with Koinonia often receive kids who have suffered abuse, neglect, or molestation. “We are looking for families who are willing to care for often challenging children so they can start to heal from their abuse,” Jerry says. “We see kids transform from scared with lots of challenging behaviors to happy children with mostly normal types of challenging behaviors.” Over the last few years, Koinonia has assisted in hundreds of adoptions and served thousands of kids. Families often want to adopt young children but what’s most needed are families willing to foster or foster-to-adopt older children, especially teens. “Koinonia is like a family,” Ted says. “We go in there and we know everyone and they know us. Rebecca Deal Five generations and a community built on friendship ties Rebecca Deal to San Joaquin, and with such a strong connection to the Central Valley, she can’t picture herself anywhere else. “All of my family is here, born and raised,” Rebecca grins. Being Bank of Stockton’s Cash Management Officer, Rebecca takes every chance she can to promote positive change in the region her family calls home. It’s no wonder, then, that she became involved with Haven of Peace. As any volunteer can attest, going above and beyond for a non-profit you truly believe in can be a full-time job. “Because it’s a 24-hour facility, we have to make sure we handle staffing, any HR issues, acquire permits to do remodels, and pound the pavement for funds,” says Rebecca. But ensuring word gets out there to women is of the utmost importance. “I want people to know that we’re out there and we’re here to help. We’ll help in any way we can.” Assisting women and children is personal for Rebecca, who raised her son as a single mom. “We support women and children of our community, whether you’re a single woman that needs shelter, or in a battered living situation. My passion is there for our nonprofit.” Rebecca also serves on the board of directors for the Stockton Greater Chamber of Commerce, and has been involved going on ten years. “I went to an event, and started attending as many as possible. I try to do as much as I can for the Chamber.” Rebecca doesn’t feel like she’s unusual. She’s “just a normal person who wants to make a difference, whether that difference is big or small.” But, she does have some solid advice. “Find something that you’re passional about and get involved!”

Debbie Freitas

“I live my mission every day, and that’s the best way to live.”

At the age of 5, Debbie Freitas knew exactly what she’d do when she grew up. “I wanted to become a deputy, to do whatever I could to give back to the community I live in.” What she hadn’t counted on, however, was the skills the job would provide, and how they would help her succeed as she reached out to lend a hand to the community after her career in law enforcement. Now, as Owner and Operator of Pawtastic Thrift Boutique— fully benefiting Delta Humane Society, a no-kill animal shelter— and Chair of the Miracle Mile Merchant Committee, Debbie works diligently to improve the lives of every single soul that walks through her door, whether they’re walking on two legs, or four. “Pawtastic is a vehicle to bring more awareness to the Delta Humane Society. It is an everyday, consistent fundraiser,” says Debbie. As a drop-off destination for shelter donations such as pet food, bedding, and financial gifts, Debbie’s efforts are tireless in prepping and selling donated items, pet adoptions, and outreach. “You always hope you’re doing enough. You always want to do more. And you always want to reach out to more people.” But Debbie’s outreach isn’t just for the sake of the animals. Her store has a second, lesser-known purpose that’s just as inspiring as her first. “I have created a program where veterans with a voucher can shop.” Whether it’s kitchenware, a lamp, or the suit that they need to step forward and into their interview, Debbie wants to make the lives of veterans just a little bit easier. “I’ve seen what my brothers and sisters in uniform have to face. I know the barriers that they have to cross. One beautiful piece of clothing can make a difference. One act of giving can make a difference in a person’s life.”

Kristen Dyke It may have been University of the Pacific that first drew Kristen Dyke from San Jose, but the allure of the Delta, a strong sense of community, and a young love that would blossom into a marriage gave her little choice, but to lay down her roots. And, truth be told, Kristen would have it no other way. “Stockton is the perfect place for us. It’s outdoorsy and we love spending time on the water,” she says. “And we have such a tightknit community. Everybody knows everybody. I like that.” As Owner and Director of Marketing at Port City Marketing Solutions, Inc., Kristen is perfectly folded into the many businesses and non-profits around our region, applying her talents to create great change for those who need it most. “I grew up in a family that always gave back,” says Kristen. “I feel very strongly about helping our youth and at-risk families. I want to give children all the resources they need to thrive.” This stance is what led Kristen to become a part of the Executive Board of the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC). “It’s such an amazing organization. I’m really proud to be a part of it,” she says. From marketing assistance, to event founding, Kristen works hard to help CAPC succeed. But her work doesn’t end there. Kristen is also a part of the San Joaquin Children’s Alliance, where she helps to overcome obstacles for the children in our community. “Helping our children succeed is my passion and priority.” The Eleanor Project is another non-profit near and dear to her heart. “I’m on the Advisory Committee and our goal is to promote, encourage, and support fellow women in San Joaquin County.” From logos and websites, to marketing and more, Kristen is a whirlwind of inspiration that continues to bring out the best in her community.

“I’m motivated by the things people told me I couldn’t do.” 60

T. Denise Manning is a game changer in all definitions of the word, leveling the playing field for some of the most at-risk youth in our communities, and applying her talents in various organizations across the region and beyond. “I’ve served on the executive board for the Black Chamber, NAACP, Black Leadership Council, and SJ Community Action Board,” says Denise. In addition, she’s been the keynote speaker for Stockton’s annual Power of One event and was one of the first speakers for The Eleanor Project’s Tep Talks. But being a part of boards and sharing her story was never enough for the retired combat veteran and author. In January 2016, Denise joined the Office of Violence Prevention as their first Community Engagement Coordinator. Simultaneously, she also opened her business, Pretty Lady Boutique. And as she learned more and more about the current state of the city, she realized, “there was a lot of emphasis on mentoring young males of color, but what about the girls?” That wouldn’t do. And so, Denise took to local schools to create Pretty Lady Sisterhood, a mentor program for young girls. “For the last two years, I’ve had a group of girls that were referred by their principals for bad behavior.” Denise ripped the basement of her store apart and created a safe space for the girls in her program to meet. “I taught them different ways to combat stress and anger, such as Yoga, Reiki, and Meditation.” While Denise has since left her position at the City of Stockton, she has been dedicated to her business and nonprofit, and continues her work as a motivational speaker and active humanitarian, serving in countries such as Africa, China, Japan, India, and Honduras, assisting women in need.

Diane Vigil When Diane looks back on the countless programs and non-profits, boards and events she’s taken part in, one sentence she utters truly encapsulates her persona: “Have I done enough?” It’s difficult to imagine a woman who’s served on the boards, in part, for Hospice of San Joaquin, Children’s Home of Stockton, Community Foundation of San Joaquin Philanthropy Summit Committee, and Association for Fundraising Professionals, feeling anything less than absolute certainty in her efforts to serve her community. Especially looking back on the many roles she’s filled. Even now, Diane holds the chair as President of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce; right alongside her role as Dameron’s Foundation Director. “It is humbling and an honor,” Diane smiles. “One of the biggest challenges is being present both mentally and physically. When accepting the opportunity to serve the GSCC, I made a commitment to give it my very best, learn about their programs and services, attend meetings and events [and write] my monthly column!” Yet, this is only a piece of what the philanthropist wishes to do for her community. “When my time with the Chamber is finished, I’m looking forward to becoming part of a board. There’s still so much I want to be a part of, to volunteer for, and to make a difference with.” Diane’s time may be tied at present, but it’s bliss being able to perform outreach for the community she calls home. Her 30 years at the Dameron Foundation has supported a healthier community and advanced healthcare close to home. Showcasing Dameron’s services is a rewarding task she thrives on and developing new ways to fund raise is a constant learning experience. But the balance of life is a challenge that Diane looks forward to each day. As a community liaison, both in her career and charitable endeavors, Diane strives to respect and represent the many moving pieces she so carefully puts into place.

Tama Brisbane Stockton’s Poet Laureate, Tama Brisbane, lives and breathes the arts. As our city’s literary ambassador, she creates poems for our civic events, and thrives on bringing a new level of immersion in words to audiences of all ages. “Especially youth and young adults,” grins Tama. As Co-Founder and Executive Director of With Our Words Inc., a program that empowers youth to find their voice and develop through the literary and performing arts, Tama performs outreach and recruitment, and program facilitation. “I’m currently helping to restructure the organization in preparation for our next decade of local, statewide, and national service.” And as the Area Coordinator and Teaching Artist for California Poets in Schools, Tama conducts poetry residencies at K-12 school sites throughout San Joaquin County. If that wasn’t quite enough on her plate, Tama adds: “Did I mention that I have a small eco-business?” Spare time is a work of fiction for the Poet Laureate, but that doesn’t stop her from engaging in her community every chance she gets. “I’m looking forward to being part of the uphill fight for the soul of this country,” Tama admits. “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a moment when so many different segments of society were simultaneously empowered and committed to forward movement, despite forces equally as committed to backward movement and repression.” And in a long list of local nonprofits such as Third City Coalition, The Black Employees Association of Stockton, Tuleburg Press, Stockton Arts Commission, and so many more, Tama is always looking for more ways to help the city that she proudly calls home. “I love creating platforms for artistic and multicultural voices in the county to be involved with, particularly those of our region’s youth and young adults. And I like to think that I bring a creative, thoughtful, and passionate energy to the opportunities people have given me.”

For years some have turned their noses at cosmetic procedures, insisting they go against the love your body mantra the 2010s have become about. Perhaps, however, that isn’t true. In a society where doing what makes you happy is becoming the norm, why shouldn’t we turn to cosmetic procedures to empower us? At Studio Q, the full face is most popular but many clients choose to target only the eyes or mouth. “The general principle is that with almost all these devices they produce a controlled injury to the skin and as the skin heals it becomes more normal,” explains Dr. Gerald Bock at California Skin & Laser with offices in Stockton and Lodi. The newer technologies reduce discomfort and allow for less downtime following a treatment. Dr. Bock uses a Erbium YAG laser to reverse wrinkly and crepe-y skin. For people with more severe wrinkling and discoloration, Dr. Bock recommends the croton oil peel. The croton oil peel tightens skin while also reducing the appearance of age spots and pigmentation problems. It’s ideal for skin that has experienced sun damage or is suffering from the natural effects of aging.

The Halo Laser

When it comes to treating wrinkles and skin discoloration, there is no shortage of lasers on the market. While there are similarities between all of these lasers, the Halo Laser offers something different. Combining two lasers, a deeper penetrating laser and a more superficial laser, that fire simultaneously, the Halo Laser produces results with less peeling and discomfort than the previously developed lasers.

The peel works by penetrating the deeper layers of the skin and addressing textural abnormalities. By improving the skin’s deep structures, sun-damaged and wrinkled skin is dramatically improved and the patient walks out with radiant, smoother, and healthier-looking skin. Another option is the picosecond laser, a laser with a very short and powerful pulse that operates with several different wavelengths. The first use of the laser was for tattoo removal where it reduced the number of tattoo treatments by about half. It also can remove more colors than the older laser and the treatments are less painful. Dr. Bock uses the laser for skin rejuvenation and pore reduction that is almost painless, often targeting skin pigmentation issues. “The older lasers destroy pigment through heat,” Dr. Bock explains. “This laser, because of its

very short pulse, removes pigment by creating a shock wave. The lack of heat means there is less risk of the treatment causing secondary, but temporary, hyper pigmentation.” If you need a deeper fix, eye rejuvenation can be achieved through surgery. Kimberly Cockerham, MD, who works out of offices in Stockton, Lodi, and Modesto, recommends surgery for redundant skin, wrinkles, and fat. All three of these nuisances can be improved by going under the knife when Botox and laser therapy won’t cut it. So why opt for surgery when other non-invasive applications permeate the market? “Bags under the eyes are due to the fat behind your eyes moving forward due to aging, eye rubbing and other causes,” Dr. Cockerham explains. “The only effective option is surgery. Fillers in this area have a high complication rate.”

“There are a lot of women who have over plucked their eyebrows or had them permanently tattooed, which destroyed their follicles,” she explains. Using your own hair, Dr. Cockerham transplants it onto the space where your eyebrow used to be, achieving the same consistency as your original brows. And the eyebrows aren’t the only part of the face that can benefit, Dr. Cockerham also offers eyelash transplants. Because hair transplantation is now a minimally invasive process with essentially no downtime, recovery is quick. “The technology has advanced the procedure dramatically in the last decade,” she says.

MEN Do It, TOO

Women aren’t the only ones going under the knife, or laser, to achieve a better self-image. As of recent years, the number of men undergoing cosmetic surgery and procedures has skyrocketed. According the American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery, one-third of men surveyed said they are “extremely likely” to consider a cosmetic procedure. Age played a role in the results with 58 percent of those responses coming from men between 25 and 34 years of age, and 34 percent between 18 and 24 years. It hints to a trend in men becoming more conscious of their physical appearance as society inches closer to balance in gender quality issues. The procedures men are clamoring to get are essentially the same women endure, however, they can be given new names to appeal to the audience, including Brotox. Locally, Dr. McNemar is embracing the higher percentage of men clientele. He cites businessmen with a desire to fit in by looking younger as one type of client coming in for procedures. He says plastic surgery for men is a way to shift the stigma that an older man is not trendy and therefore not as effective as a younger man in the very same job. Linoleum Forget it’s look in the 80s and 90s (we won’t judge yours). This budget friendly option has seen some styling love over the last few years, and has returned as a popular choice for durable flooring, available in a wide array of colors and styles starting at typically $2.50 per square foot. As a “resilient” material, linoleum has a slight cushioning effect, as it both compresses and bounces back under pressure. Though its biodegradable, this flooring can last some 30 years when properly maintained. However, it is sun-sensitive, and the flooring can darken or become yellow in highly exposed areas.

It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon at the Commons, downtown Sacramento’s revitalized city center. Next to small boutiques and global brand shops, entertainment is king. The Golden 1 Center, home of the Sacramento Kings, took over a large portion of the former shopping haven. Inside, concerts, family shows, ice events, and more are part of the weekly line-up. In April, the Kings will face off against the Rockets (April 11), V101’s Throwback Freestyle Jam will takeover the arena (April 13), and D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, George Lopez, and Eddie Griffin will team up for a Comedy Get Down (April 26). If you can wait, May 1 welcomes Train and Hall & Oates to the stage. Golden1Center.com

Check in starts at 3 PM at the Citizen Hotel on J Street. You can venture in whenever you’re done hanging around Downtown Commons. In the midst of Sacramento’s major revitalization, and its rebrand as the Farm-to-Fork capitol, plenty of places to stay are popping up all over. You’ll have to scratch The Citizen Hotel and fondue dinner from your itinerary to fit in this gem, but for couples seeking something different, it’s the ideal experience to indulge in. The Delta King Riverboat—a famous riverboat with a storied history on the Sacramento River—is the identical sister ship to the Delta Queen, which floats on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. Originally built in Glasgow, Scotland, and Stockton, the riverboat still holds some of the charms that made it a popular vessel in 1927, when it was christened. Inside, guests are invited to dine on upscale cuisine (at what is now the Pilothouse Restaurant) before retiring to a room upstairs. Rates have gone up a bit since its inception, when the riverboat was populated by those looking for an evening of prohibition-era drinking, jazz bands, gambling and fine dining and rooms went for $3.50 a night, but the experience is one unlike any other in the region, afloat a vessel that has earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. It all begins at De Vega Brothers. Going on nearly 20 years of experience in the De Vega kitchen, owners Alberto and Rafael Vega know what it means to build something guests will enjoy from the ground up. De Vega Brothers didn’t spring to life in Stockton, after all, but was first planted in Manteca. Even as a hole-in-the-wall near downtown, De Vega was filling seats faster than they could accommodate their growing stream of guests. Specials such as the Deep-Fried Ravioli and the Filet Mignon, charbroiled and topped with a wild mushroom merlot demi glaze wrangled in return-guests. That bump in the road prompted a move just a short drive away to a larger location. And, as demand blossomed, the brothers had little choice, but to open shop in Stockton with a venue that could match the quality of their food and expected service. Today, De Vega Brothers is synonymous with fine dining, offering a taste of the Mediterranean in both their food and décor. After all, plates of Pasta Del Mare, ripe with sautéed salmon, prawns, and scallops tangled in bell peppers, tomato, and red or white sauce sit perfectly alongside floor to ceiling windows, and a baby-grand piano. And who can resist ordering another glass of locally crafted wine or imported varieties from Italy itself when a full bar is ready to enhance your evening on the town?

Personally, we can’t get enough of the many available pasta dishes, each with its own unique blend of sauces and textures, herbs and garden-fresh vegetables. It’s a difficult night when one must choose between Pasta Salsiccia, which features Italian sausage that’s sautéed in mushrooms and bell pepper, onion, tomatoes, and herbs, and settle into a bed of penne, or Pasta Primavera, carefully tossed in alfredo sauce, and rich in eggplant and onions, carrots, zucchini, and bell peppers. Ever wonder what the large green seal adorning signs around Lodi Wine Country mean? Lodi wineries and grape growers were the first in the nation to launch a sustainability program, represented by the seals. Yes, you read that right…the first! The Lodi Winegrape Commission developed and implemented Lodi Rules in 2005 and cemented their position as leaders of the industry nationwide. And while this isn’t new

news, it is worthy of a mention when celebrating Earth Day! With over 45,000 acres certified, Lodi Rules has been a raging success. There are 129 wines bearing the Lodi Rules seal and they have won a combined 333 awards—that’s a lot of gold to go around! To wear the green seal, a wine must contain 85% certified sustainable grapes. I got started making wine when Larry and I bought a winery! I knew nothing about winemaking at that time, but quickly realized that if we wanted our wines to be the way we wanted them to be, we needed to make them ourselves. I quickly set out to learn, and I learned very well. With my background as a Microbiologist and a California State Licensed Scientist, I found it easy for me to learn. I thank God every day for giving me this opportunity in life.

WHAT’S YOUR WINEMAKING STYLE?

I choose to not fight a wine; let the wine be what it wants to be. This varies from year to year dependent upon the weather and farming practices. You want a wine to be consistent from year to year, but I don’t get into the practice of additions to the wine to create something that tastes exactly as it did the year before. That is the beauty of wine; it is constantly evolving, even in the bottle. You can purchase a case of wine, and every single bottle will be a slightly different experience.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WINE YOU’VE MADE?

Our favorite that I have made is the Chardonnay! It is my personal favorite, being fermented and matured in oak barrels. It is chock full of buttery goodness! However, this year I intend to also produce a stainless, fruity Chardonnay as well as the oaky, buttery style that I so love. 130

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE WINE MAKING PROCESS?

I love harvest! It is so exciting when the decision is made to pick a certain vineyard, and watching the grapes as they spill into the tank. Magic!

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?

This question has two answers. Viaggio Winery has won numerous awards over the years, and that is extremely satisfying. This year our first blend, River Red, won a double gold in the San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition, along with gold for Malbec, and numerous other awards. The very first wine I made won a silver medal at the California State Fair! The other aspect is when I am in the cellar, all alone, and decide to taste from a barrel. When all of a sudden you know you have a winner, and with no audience, I break into my happy dance! What a feeling!

It’s fairly evident that we in San Joaquin love our sushi. I dare you to go two miles in any direction in any one of our major cities.

Odds are, a sushi joint will be waiting with fresh cuts of fish offered up to satiate your rollloving appetite. But there’s a new trend that’s taking the nation by storm, having surfed the waves straight out of Hawaii. Introducing the poke bowl! These beauties bring everything we love about sushi under one, cylindrical dish. Chilled cuts of our favorite seafood, typically tuna or salmon, are served over a bed of warm rice. If you’re going for the traditional Hawaiian dish, you may add some soy sauce, and serve, and that in and of itself is a truly beautiful marriage between simplicity and delectability. But here on the mainland, we tend to get a little crazy, much to the chagrin of poke bowl purists. As your Instagram and Facebook feeds can attest, the great thing about the poke bowl is how imaginative one can be with ingredients. Those looking to garner a healthy meal can sub rice for vegetable-based noodles and pickled carrots and roe, and those with a healthy appetite can pack on avocado and tofu, edamame and that ohso-sensational spicy mayo. Some have even taken the liberty of creating their own California roll in poke bowl form! Oh. You weren’t looking to make this yourself, were you? Fear not, my kitchen-evading compatriot! Restaurants are popping up all along San Joaquin dedicated to 132

these majestic lunch-makers. You can start with the Albacore Bowl at Poke Salad off of March Lane in Stockton. It’s loaded up with albacore, spicy tuna, and seaweed salad, layered in mango and cucumber, edamame and red onion. Dollop on the avocado, tobiko, and crispy garlic and you’ve got your salad. Or maybe you’re off West Lane one fine day, and decide to stop in for a bite at Superfish Poke & Tea? By the late 1940s, the Weibel family was ready to make their first land purchase and planted themselves among 100 acres of fruitful vines in Mission San Jose. But the Weibel line wasn’t yet ready to settle down, and fifty years later, they took to the fertile grounds of the Central Valley where rich opportunities awaited along the Woodbridge region. Since then, Weibel has continued to climb in popularity and promising varietals, harnessing everything one could ask of sparkling wines, and furthering their repertoire with reds such as the Weibel Family Patriot, a Mendocino blend with black berries, allspice, and tobacco accents. ASPARAGUS  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

Have you ever stopped to think about how lucky we are to have access to fresh asparagus? In some parts of the country you’d be lucky to find asparagus at all, but here in San Joaquin County, we can enjoy it fresh from the farm every Spring! Asparagus is one of our most beloved crops, and while the acreage of asparagus has reduced dramatically over the past few years, our region embraces the hard work of our asparagus farmers to provide us with locally grown, fresh produce. I mean, we have a festival dedicated to all things asparagus, and for good reason. It is absolutely delicious! As if you need another reason to love living in the Golden State, did you know California is the nation’s leading producer of fresh asparagus? With over 250 growers, California farms over 70 percent of the annual crop. But how did asparagus become a culinary staple, showing up on restaurant menus and cooked in homes across America? 136

Believe it or not, asparagus is a perennial plant that is native to the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia. And while the Greeks loved asparagus, it was the Ancient Romans who were the first to cultivate the plant over 2,500 years ago. Luckily for us, the French and English loved asparagus so much that they brought it to America, spreading the savory spears with the colonists. So, when America expanded west, Asparagus came along for the ride. It’s hard to believe the first recorded planting of asparagus in California dates to 1852. The BEST news about asparagus is that there are only FOUR calories in each spear. Say what? The plump, green stalks are an excellent source of Vitamin B6, C, E and K. The spears contain healthy levels of calcium, magnesium, dietary fiber, folic acid, and niacin, among many other benefits. And, if you need more reasons to eat asparagus, check this out. According to the National Cancer Institute, asparagus contains a high amount of glutathione, one

of the body’s most potent cancer fighters. Now let’s talk flavor. These grassy, earthy, stalks hail from the Lily family, which also includes onions, garlic, and leeks. Which must be why asparagus pairs so well with the spring vegetable line-up of leeks, garlic, fennel, mushrooms, and citrus. Not to mention the nutty profiles of the spears complement cheeses like Pecorino, salty meats (think prosciutto), cream, eggs, and herbs. All these things explain why we love asparagus! Its versatility makes it one of the easiest veggies to prepare. Asparagus can be sautéed, steamed, grill, boiled, baked and fried. With so many ways to prep the Food of Kings, I hope you will check out these recipes crafted specifically for Spring! They are simple, delicious and showcase one of our local favorite crops in San Joaquin County.

ASPARAGUS, CORN, AND POTATO PIZZA INGREDIENTS 1 Package Refrigerated Pizza Dough 3 Tbs. Fresh Pesto 1 Purple Potato, sliced thin 8 to 10 Asparagus Spears, sliced into 1-inch pieces ½ C. Fire Roasted Corn Can (or fresh corn off the cob) 3 Tbs. Ricotta Cheese ½ C. Parmesan Cheese ¼ Tsp. Sea Salt, for garnish 1 Tbs. Olive Oil DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Unwrap pizza dough and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 6 minutes and remove from the oven. Brush the pesto all over the pizza dough and arrange the asparagus, purple potato, roasted corn, ricotta and shaved parmesan. Bake for five additional minutes. Remove and slice. Sprinkle with sea salt and one tablespoon olive oil. *Recipe Courtesy of Fine Foodie Philanthropist

ASPARAGUS FRITTATA INGREDIENTS 8 Eggs • ½ C. Cream • 2 Tbs. Butter • 2 Oz. Goat Cheese, crumbled 14-16 Asparagus Spears, sliced into 1 ½ inch pieces, 8 spears sliced into 4-inch pieces for garnish • 3 Green Onions, sliced thin • ½ Tsp. Salt • ½ Tsp. Pepper DIRECTIONS Turn your oven to broil. Crack eight eggs into a medium sized bowl and add cream, salt and pepper. Whisk ingredients and set aside. Heat two tablespoons of butter in a cast iron or non-stick oven-proof pan. Add the asparagus and the green onion, sauté over medium heat for three minutes. Pour egg mixture into the pan with the asparagus and use a flat spatula to stir through the egg mixture for three minutes, or until it sets on the bottom. Add crumbled goat cheese and eight remaining asparagus spears in a starburst pattern. Place in the oven for two to three minutes until the eggs are cooked through. BEHIND theKNIFE: CHRIS ISERT, BROOKSIDE COUNTRY CLUB  BY COPPER WILLIAMS Not all symphonies are delegated to concert halls. Just ask Chris Isert, the Executive Chef at Brookside Country Club who eagerly applies his trade in an everevolving orchestra of spices and splashes of sauce, sizzling meats, and boiling pots. “I’ve always loved to cook and entertain,” says Chris, also adoringly known to all as Chef. As a maestro of fine dining, Chris has showcased his skill in our region since 2001, elevating taste buds to a higher state of foodiebliss, particularly in his passion for Mediterranean and southwestern cuisine.

“Our menu is constantly changing,” he grins. “If you don’t [change it], you get bored! There’s still so much I just need to get out of my head. Seasons change, you get new ingredients, and it’s even better when your crew gets behind you and wants to try new things, too!” But there are just some things Chris can’t take off the menu. “I’ve tried, but too many people ask for our Braised Short rib.” A succulent dish that’s just as tender as it is flavorful. Another pièce de résistance we’d despair over departing is the French Dip, with an au jus that makes meager bouillonbased dipping sauces weep. But the base of Brookside members are enamored with the evolution of Chris’ menu options, and enjoy every class he hosts that take guests deeper into the chef’s repertoire. “This is a hands-on class. We get fourteen people shoulder to shoulder working a [food] station and I do the rounds.” From elaborate dishes, to refreshing, crisp salads, and even desserts, Chris thrives on showcasing 138

his love for cooking with his members. And when the wine is all you can drink, barriers go down and banter is just as free-flowing as the bottles. But, believe it or not, the expert behind every mouth-watering meal didn’t begin behind the knife, but rather, a big rig. “I was a truck driver and a warehouseman, and I decided to go to culinary school when I was thirty years old.” The career change was a blessing for Chris, who was soon traveling around the states with only himself as the cargo and a repertoire of culinary experience that transported him to such places as Tourelle and the Carnelian Room, Vail Resorts, Coyote Creek and Aramark Conventions. But once his travels landed him in the Central Valley, it was here that he decided to remain.
