CITYGUIDE 2016 EDITION
The Miracle Mile district includes over 200 businesses in a 31 block area. In 1921 the planned commercial area, the developing university, and the in-coming residential area were the northern limits of a bustling city. Today, the restaurant at the northwest corner of Walnut and Pacific Avenue is named “Centrale due to its geographic location as the exact north-south center of Stockton. The district encompasses the commercial area of Pacific Avenue from Alpine Avenue on the north to Harding Way on the South, and includes those commercial properties on Harding Way from North El Dorado Street to Lincoln Street.

publisher’s note
CITY GUIDE
Let us guide you There is a lot I love about San Joaquin County, this publication, and my position as publisher, but undoubtedly one of the biggest perks of my job is the unique perspective it allows me.
If you’re not having fun you’re doing it wrong – Alex Bogusky
I sometimes feel in the middle of it all, covering San Joaquin County extensively from city to city. I have a front row seat to the tremendous growth this area has achieved, growth that is propelled by the hardworking men and women who care deeply about this county. They are the backbone and have allowed San Joaquin to become what it is today, and permitted San Joaquin Magazine to thrive right alongside it. Each month I stumble upon a plethora of opportunities to delve deeper into the inter workings of this community, the threads that connect all of its people, places, and things. It has become blatantly clear to me that the San Joaquin I see today is not the same San Joaquin fifteen years ago. It’s both bigger and better. Each year, new events take center stage. There is always something to see and do without leaving the comforts of home behind. Some of my favorite annual events—from the county fair to Zinfest—have paved the way for other organizations to celebrate their triumphs here. Whether we’re working together to make Stockton great, sipping award-winning wines crafted from grapes grown in the Lodi AVA, or passing on family traditions by attending the same festivals and street fairs with our kids as we did with our parents when we were young, we’ve all been nurturing San Joaquin in our own way. I consider myself undeniably lucky to experience it all, and, in some ways, be ultimately entangled in its successes. It has become abundantly clear that there is too much good going on here to keep track of it all, which is why my team has decided to add a new annual publication to our heap. We present to you: the City Guide. An entire publication brimming with can’t-miss events, enviable attractions, and everything else that makes San Joaquin great. It’s the perfect tool to keep close by, whether you’re looking for new places to explore with your family, or in need of a little advice on where to spend your hard earned dollars. Let it entice you to stretch beyond your own surroundings and explore the gems that lurk nearby, or consult the guide to uncover hidden attractions in your own corner of San Joaquin. Grab a copy of WineDine209, the companion publication to this City Guide. Packed with everything there is on Restaurants, Wineries, Coffee Hot Spots, Treats and more. Together they make up everything you will ever need to Playing, Shopping, Sipping and Savoring in San Joaquin. We hope you enjoy the newest piece of our ever-growing collection, and that you allow it to take you on a new adventure. It’ll be worth it; we promise. See you next year,

CITYGUIDE 2016 EDITION
LAST THOUGHTS Did you know you could take the ACE to the BART and literally leave your car in San Joaquin to explore SF without the worry of a $75 parking ticket? (that is, when you can actually find a spot). This was news to me, even growing up here and in the East Bay Area. I know what I’ll be doing next weekend. As an annual guide, we’ve compiled a list of can’tmiss events to keep you busy throughout the year, arranged by season. Plan the rest of your summer, sweet fall, winter, and spring with ease. No reason to worry or obsess over FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) because we’ve got you in the loop. As the first City Guide of its kind in the area, there is no better time to release it! With all the growing and changing the Central Valley has experienced lately, it is a truly exciting time to launch this publication, and it will be inspiring to see how much next years edition grows as our home does as well. Big things are on the way, and we feel blessed to share them with you!
Its zest hits you by surprise. The profusion of sights, sounds, colors and smells wakens your senses to flavors and experiences you hadn’t expected. In this city strategically situated along the California Delta, the river flows out to the coast, cultures converge and the world comes together. Welcome to Stockton, a place filled with more diversity, passion and energy than many major metropolitan areas. To stock up on flavor visit: VISITSTOCKTON.ORG

>STOCKTO Our beloved port-side city sits the throne of San Joaquin, providing our county a central hub for our ever growing communities across the region. Bringing in residents both old and new by car, boat and plane, it’s a sprawling metropolis amid an agricultural wonderland which provides locally grown produce to its residents, and nations worldwide. You need only take a tour downtown to discover some of our city’s grandest gems. They shine brightest in historic buildings such as the Bob Hope Theatre, in museums like the Haggin, and spread out into nature’s generously donated Delta which connects our port to the rest of the nation and beyond. Yes, our city is unique in its splendor. And as we watch new business flock into its communities and breathe life back into its districts we are so lucky to be offered a glimpse into the future of one of our nation’s most magnificent municipalities.

CITYGUIDE 2016 EDITION
This charming community may be on the smaller side, but what Ripon lacks in size it makes up for in agricultural abundance and classic hometown qualities. Known by many locals as the “Almond Capital of the World”, Ripon has made its name in the orchards lining the city limits. Among those orchards are plenty of other crops Ripon has become synonymous with, including rows and rows of walnut trees and vineyards scaling back and alongside the Stanislaus River, the very river which acts as the divider between our county and the next. With the 99 Freeway trailing through its center, Ripon is perfect for folks looking for a tightly knit community where downtown shopping means meeting familiar faces at every corner. And speaking of downtown, its bustling little bundle of boutiques, eateries, and easy access to the freeway means that you’re never far from having a grand ol’ time.
>MANTECA Catch the latest movie at the AMC Showplace
Can't Miss! Hit Bass Pro Shops in Manteca before heading to the Delta
Known as the “Family City”, Manteca has welcomed its commuter residents with open arms and a constantly expanding base of beautiful homes alongside the agricultural expanses on the cusp of the city. Parked directly around the 120 and 99, Manteca boasts easy, direct routes to the Bay Area, the Capital, and Los Angeles while being only an hour’s drive from the majesty of the mountain ranges to the east. Its continued growth has brought in new and diverse businesses, such as the AMC Showplace, giving locals the perfect chance for a night on the town without the hassle of a long drive to other neighboring cities. Big League Dreams Sports Park showcases the passion behind the softball and baseball sport for local and upcoming teams across San Joaquin.

>TRACY Widely known as the archway into the Central Valley, Tracy is the key community for those traveling to and from the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s no surprise, then, that Tracy was a fundamental town when first developing our county, having once been an important stop for trains passing through and on their way to the Bay. With plenty of stocked petroleum and freshly grown produce, Tracy fueled the local and further stretching regions in more ways than one. Today, Tracy showcases suburban families and a downtown that speaks of its incredible history. Iconic buildings such as the Grand still stand, providing newer generations with entertainment that has grown with its residents. With cute corner stores, ritzy restaurants, and other memorable pieces of history—such as the Tracy Inn—this corner of San Joaquin County continues to bring our roots back to life in all the right ways.

Its central location alongside Highway I-5 and the 120 make it a perfect stop for people looking for a quick bite to eat at one of the conveniently located fast food joints or welcoming restaurants just off freeway entrances. Lathrop’s historical roots in the county has spurred a city-based committee to assist in its development, spurring the town’s continued growth west of I-5, but also nursing the revitalization of some of its oldest districts to the east of the highway. This, in turn, has slowly kindled the flames of new business ventures for residents and visitors to enjoy.

We’re not called the Central Valley for nothing—and there are many planes, trains, and automobiles that connect us to surrounding gems and intercity destinations.
STOCKTON AIRPORT
FlyStockton.com For a small city, we’ve got a killer airport. Fly Allegiant non-stop to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and now, San Diego for a seriously low cost. Considered the “Bay Area’s Best Kept Secret,” Stockton Metropolitan Airport offers $10 per night, secure overnight parking, Enterprise rental cars and Yellow Cab, Uber and Lyft. Enjoy their grill and full bar, Subway restaurant and laptop and mobile phone charging stations and outlets while you await your flight. The best part besides the tons of cash you’ll save on your flight? The almost stressfree and line-free experience you’ll have as you make your way through security and to your gate.
SAN JOAQUIN REGIONAL TRANSIT DISTRICT SanJoaquinRtd.com Whether you’re jumping on the bus for a venture into town, a stretch through San Joaquin, or a commute to BART, RTD can get you there for fewer than ten dollars. Avoid the hassle of driving long distances in heavy traffic and instead take your travel
time to sleep or prepare for the day. Added bonus? You save wear and tear on your car and the environment. Their metro routes operate in the Stockton Metropolitan area, while Intercity Fixed Routes connect Stockton with Lodi, Tracy, Manteca, Ripon and Lathrop. For trips to Sacramento and the Bay Area, jump on the San Joaquin Commuter—running every weekday from Stockton, Tracy, and Manteca to BART for only $7 each way. Reservations are strongly recommended as this service has limited capacity, but fret not, because RTD offers monthly subscription passes!
BART

With over 30 stations, the BART will take you where you want to go, whether it is Berkeley, or literally any downtown hot spot. No need to worry about parking, tickets, or towing, allowing you to fully enjoy all of the city’s magic and mayhem.
