DALTON COSMETICS’ H20GLO
A huge hit among makeup artists, this creamy highlighter's light-reflective ingredients—like natural pearl essence—give a subtle luster, while jojoba, grape seed, avocado, and vitamins A and E nourish and hydrate. Dab some on the inner corners of your eyes or swipe across your cheekbones for an instantly refreshed look. Available at QVC.
This mascara combines Givenchy’s iconic spherical brush with an enhanced formula for ultimate definition, length, and curl in an intense black shade. Get a wideeyed lash look that lasts all day with this formula that strongly clings to the lashes. Non-sticky and easy to apply, this mascara’s 360-degree, modern brush design has a precise “S” brush shape to separate and coat every lash—even the shortest— from root to tip. Available at Sephora
L’ORÉAL PARIS STUDIO SECRETS PROFESSIONAL MAGIC PERFECTING BASE
Minimize pores and fine lines, instantly perfecting skin texture all day. The lightweight formula glides onto skin and results in an unified, flawless, matte finish. Dermatologist tested and great for all skin types. Available at ULTA and Walgreens.

KAT VON D EVERLASTING MINI LIQUID LIPSTICK SET
Grab the kit for an exclusive lineup of creamy, high-pigment shades. They slide on like a gloss but dry with a true matte finish. Never tested on animals, and infused with enhancing ingredients like vitamin E and sunflower seed. Available at Sephora.
STILA ONE STEP CORRECT
A primer, color corrector, brightener and anti-aging skincare serum is all-in-one, with the help of Stila’s Youth Revival BioAvailable Mineral Complex. Make imperfections disappear, control oil and hydrate, conceal redness and blemishes, and get a vibrant, energized look. Available at ULTA
SUE DEVITT EYE INTENSIFIER PENCIL
Grab this pencil in an array of metallic shades, and create a long-lasting luminous eye. The velvety formula is super smooth, for fool-proof application, and its anti-aging ingredients lock in moisture and move with your expressions. Available at ULTA.
BEACHWAVER PRO
We have celebrity hairstylist, Sarah Potempa, to thank for this life-changing product. Get the best curls with half the time and effort, thanks to this innovative, professional curling iron that rotates in both directions to give you glamorous, bombshell waves with the touch of a button. Available at Nordstrom.
BEAUTYBLENDER
If you haven’t yet picked up the world’s first edgeless, non-disposable, high-definition cosmetic sponge applicator—we suggest you do. This powerful little sponge features an open cell structure that fills with small amounts of water when wet, so that the makeup product sits on top of the sponge rather than being absorbed. First, wet the sponge, ring out until damp, and then apply foundation. Available at Sephora.
REDKEN WIND BLOWN
This finishing spray packs the power of dry shampoo, but with some serious volume. Lightweight and long-lasting, Wind Blown holds curl, creates texture, and adds life to fine or thing hair without leaving a residue. Available at ULTA.
DR. DENNIS GROSS SKINCARE ALPHA BETA® GLOW PADS
Get that glow without exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays with this exfoliating self-tanner that boasts odorless, streak free color. Alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids penetrate the skin to exfoliate, tighten pores, eliminate blackheads, and help fade existing sunspots for an even glow. Available at Sephora.

Etiquette IS IT OK TO TWEET MY ENGAGEMENT NEWS? There’s no question that social media has
changed the rules of etiquette—even for dyed-in-the-wool wedding traditionalists. Though tweeting engagement news is no longer rare, it’s still not the norm; nor is it personal. And what about your less tech-savvy friends or older relatives who wouldn’t know a tweet if it fell from the sky? Tweet the news and they may hear about it from someone far less close to you then they are. Close relatives and friends should always hear the news from you, firsthand. Then, and only then, is it a good idea to tweet it. Address your inner circle first—preferably face to face or over the phone.
CAN I POST A PHOTO OF MY ENGAGEMENT RING? After you’ve updated your “status,” it’s
only natural that you’d want to spring the bling on everyone, but not all will receive it well. Most brides share ring photos with “friends” only after they’ve asked, so it doesn’t seem as if they are boasting. Or, they take the time and show photos privately through personal email. There’s no harm in sharing your joy, but it is best to keep the nittygritty details, like cost and carats, under wraps.
DO I HAVE TO WEAR WHITE? No! Jessica Biel
didn’t—she opted for pretty, statement-making pink. It’s OK to break with custom when tradition tethers you to something that is inauthentic for you. Frills are fun, but not in the place of genuine expression. Besides, most of today’s top designers are creating gowns catering to non-conventional brides. If you are feeling pressure to wear something more conservative from friends and family, kindly tell them that while you appreciate their input and advice, it’s important for you to express yourself in your own way. They may not understand, but at least you will have heard what they had to stay.
Q&A WEDDING RULES Once the ring goes on the finger, it seems like everybody suddenly has an opinion on how to plan your perfect wedding. It can be exhausting, and with so many details to keep track of, it’s easy to forget the dos and don’ts of wedding etiquette. We’ve got the answers to your most pressing questions to help you avoid wedding day drama.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE A GIFT REGISTRY?
No longer is a gift registry a necessity. In fact, the idea makes many couples uncomfortable, especially those on their second marriage. And, because many couples are getting married later in life, asking for replacements of things they already use feels superfluous and indulgent. But there are guests—namely family—who are going to want to gift you and your betrothed with something special, even when they know your wishes. Rather than start an unnecessary argument (especially with new family members), gratefully accept the offering and move on.
I’M ON A BUDGET. IS IT APPROPRIATE TO SEND OUT HANDWRITTEN INVITES?
It’s a lovely idea, provided you use some nice card stock and your best handwriting (and maybe a professional calligrapher to copy text you’ve scripted yourself). But don’t just let budget be your guide. If that’s your sole motivation, then you are less likely to write from the heart, and anything put down on paper should be personal (if your motives are strictly monetary, seek standard invites that are more affordable). In the digital age, getting a thoughtful handwritten card is a memorable overture. Remember to address invitees personally so that the invitation expresses an element of formality.

STEP 1:
Talk budget. Before going on tours, discuss budget with your fiancé (and family). Knowing will help with negotiations when that time comes, or allow you to rule out venues based on cost.

STEP 6:
Consider photos. Is there a good place at your venue for taking photos, or will you need to head off-site?

STEP 3:
Think outside of the box. It’s not all wineries and golf courses. View barns for a rustic affair or check out art galleries for a contemporary wedding.
STEP 2:
Prioritize. If you are set on a specific wedding date, call venues before visiting to make sure they’re available. If your date is negotiable, start with the venue and then choose based on the venue’s calendar.

SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
STEP 4:
Consider the guest list. Only view venues that can accommodate your head count.
STEP 5:
Plan visits. Websites are an excellent source of information, and using the Internet to narrow down your selection is a great idea, but it's important to see your venue in person before committing.

STEP 9:
Meet your wedding coordinator. If a venue provides a wedding coordinator, insist on meeting them. If your styles don’t mesh, or you find the coordinator abrasive or distracted, you may be swayed to look elsewhere. It’s not worth the stress of planning a wedding with someone you don’t work well with.
STEP 10:
Get everything in writing. Request copies of everything you sign. If you negotiate special deals or accommodations, make sure that’s in writing, too. After meetings with your coordinator, send recaps via email to ensure small details don’t fall through the cracks.

Advice
LIVING IN THE MOMENT on your perfect day 7 TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR WEDDING DAY You’ve likely spent months, if not years, planning the ideal wedding day; every detail from seating arrangements to party favors has been thought of. Now is the time to relax, sit back, and enjoy the results of your arduous planning.
DON’T GET DISTRACTED BY DETAILS. Instead of stressing over “the plan,” designate someone (or several people) to worry for you. Put a bridesmaid in charge of ensur-
82
SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
ing the groom’s men look presentable, let your mother-in-law oversee decorating, and let the wedding planner do their job. Today is the day to delegate.
START THE DAY RIGHT. Whether it’s a mas-
sage first thing in the morning, or a cup of coffee with your wedding party, make sure the day starts off on the right foot. It’ll set the tone for everything to come.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Remember to eat and drink water, sit when you need to, and get a good night’s rest. Fill your bag with small snacks and let those around you dote a little.
C’EST LA VIE. Make this
your mantra. Everything that could have been done has been done, and now is the time for rolling with the punches. Chances are you’ll be so caught up enjoying the little moments, you won’t notice a hiccup here or there.
MAKE IT YOUR DAY. If
how you thought you would feel isn’t how you actually feel on your big day, let it be known. It’s okay to change plans. Need to see your fiancé one more time before the big moment? Ask the photographer for an impromptu “first glance.” It’s okay to change your mind.
LIVE IN THE MOMENT. This may sound
easier said than done, but try not to become consumed with thoughts of how momentous the occasion is, and instead enjoy the family and friends who have gathered to celebrate YOU.
FIND EXTRA TIME. If
I’ve heard brides say one thing too often it’s that the wedding day went by too fast. When months of planning culminate in one day (or really a few hours) it’s easy to feel you didn’t get enough. If you can persuade the venue to stay open for an extra hour, do it. If you need one more slow dance with your new spouse, demand it. Find time where you can and make it count.
Your Perfect Day Deserves A Perfect Smile
At Rondon Orthodontics we have the technology to beautify your smile in many cases in as little time as 6 months. While your total treatment time may be longer, we can help get you ready for that special day. Don't want braces on your wedding day......no problem we can remove your braces for the big day and replace them after, a savings of $300.00. Give us a call for more information.

Advice CONSUMPTION BAR
A consumption bar is similar to an open bar, but without the flat fee. Instead, hosts pay only for the alcohol consumed. This can be a positive if guests don’t imbibe too much, but it can also bite you in the end if heavy celebrating blows the budget. Raise the Bar: Budget a problem? Get creative. Offer the consumption bar for cocktail hour then switch to beer and wine, or cut it off an hour early. Cutting down on the time libations are limitless can make this dream bar a reality.
BEER & WINE ONLY
A WEDDING GUEST WALKS INTO A BAR DECODING BAR TYPES AND EXPERT TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE THEM THE BEST BY NORA HESTON TARTE When it comes to wedding refreshments, don’t let the bar be an after thought. Instead, have the libations be a central part of the festivities and entertainment. Decorate it, pay for it, or make an entire theme out of it (tiki bar, anyone?)! A well-stocked or well-thought out 84
SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS
bar can be the focus of a reception—second to the bride, of course.
OPEN BAR
Perhaps the most popular type of wedding bar, open bar means exactly what it implies: the bar is open to wedding guests for the duration of the event. From cocktails to beer and wine, an open bar allows guests to order whatever they please on the host’s dime. When booking, remember this means paying a flat fee for bar services, and tip is usually included. Raise the Bar: Handpick the alcohol. Instead of choosing only liquors from a low-level package, put one or two top shelf options in the mix.
Some venues require beer and wine only weddings while other brides and grooms look to this bar package to save money or cut down on family drama. With this approach, guests can choose between pre-selected beers and wines, but liquor isn’t an option. Raise the Bar: If possible, offer liquor to those who really want it – for a price. Consider footing the bill for beer and wine but allowing guests to buy cocktails at a cash bar. A signature cocktail is another way to sneak in a dose of hard liquor without purchasing an open bar package.
BYOB
No, this doesn’t mean asking guests to bring six-packs as wedding gifts (though I suppose you could); some venues offer hosts the option to buy their own alcohol to be served at the party. Bring a few cases of wine or a keg to get the party started! Raise the Bar: Consider buying more than necessary to make sure alcohol doesn’t run out before the night is over. And don’t forget the champagne!

BY COPPER WILLIAMS
When you want to wow your friends and give your extended relatives something to talk about, you’ve got to keep up with the latest trends in fine wedding cuisine. But who’s got the time to research when there’s so much to do? Lucky for you, my blushing brides (and grooms!), we’ve cut out the middle man and have prepared a vast array of foodie favors that will drop even the most stubborn jaw in awe!
It’s Breakfast Somewhere
Why reserve all those delectable morning treats for the wee hours of the day when they’re the perfect staple anytime? We thought you might agree! Bring on the bagels, sparkling mimosas, and customizable breakfast kabobs! We’ll take ours with pineapple, mini pancakes, and blueberries, please!
Finger Food
Put the silverware down! When you’re getting down on the dance floor, serving up speeches left and right, and posing for every selfie your guests scoop you up for, there’s simply no time to sit down and enjoy a four-course meal! Instead, serve up specialty dishes that you can enjoy on the go, allowing you and your guests ample opportunity to scoop up food and stand in line for another shot with the happy couple.
Fine Dining
Blast FROM ON FOUR WHEELS THE Past
Ready to take a trip back in time? Because your wedding will be the toast to end all when you send your guests spiraling back into the Roaring Twenties, complete with champagne towers, specialty bourbon concoctions, and seafood appetizers served on silver platters. Gatsby, eat your heart out.
Couples are bringing a whole new level of fun into their receptions by offering guests entrees from their favorite local food trucks, no longer restricting these delectable treats to roadside pit stops and downtown festivals!
QUALITY Comfort
Wrap your family, old and new, up in reimagined homestyled recipes and menu options that will keep your guests full long into the night. Rich pastas, roasted chickens, and casseroles are perfect dishes for winter weddings, providing warmth from the inside-out.
Help Yourself
DIY stations are all the rage, allowing your guests the opportunity to create their own whimsical dessert or entrée from a variety of available goodies. From fondue fountains filled with chocolate and caramel, to specialty s’mores bars, each tasty treat is just what your guest asked for; after all, they built it!
SERVE IT Rustic
When serving specialty drinks, opt for unique beverage holders, such as the trendy mason jar, or old Moscow mules with the happy couple’s initials, wedding date, or other unique aspects etched on. Perfect for guests to take home as part of their memento of your special occasion! SAN JOAQUIN WEDDINGS

REBEL
BRIDESMAIDS BY KELLY POLLARD
If anyone has seen an episode of Bridezillas, you quickly realize how crazy brides can become leading up to their big day. I thought I was pretty mellow compared to some… The one decision constantly challenged? The specific bridesmaid dress I plucked off a rack for my seven bridesmaids. Hindsight is everything, now isn’t it? My fiancé and I set our wedding date for two weeks after I graduated from college thirteen years ago. When envisioning our ideal wedding day, a priority included tons of bridesmaids and groomsmen. In my early twenties, my tribe of friends felt closer than family at times, and I wanted them all included in my fairytale day. Being young and generally not filled with much worldly sensibility, I picked out a lavender bridesmaid dress with straps skinnier than dental floss, complete with the dye-to-match high heels. Little did I know, there were mild behind-the-scenes rebellions brought on by a general commiseration about a pale 98

dress that flattered only size six ladies--minimal material at maximum cost. Frankly, I can’t blame my bridesmaids. I existed in a fog of blissed-out love, deprivation by diet frozen meals to squeeze into a dream dress, and sticker shock at what it really cost to host a wedding at a winery – all while hoping my days of cake tasting and honeymoon planning didn’t interfere with my graduation prospects. Wedding planning felt like a second career that interfered with my two-hour commute to school in Santa Cruz. Once I decided on the dress, I quickly pushed it out of my head. Hints of the growing rebellion didn’t surface until my bachelorette party, when rogue ladies had the gall to want to buy silver shoes instead of purple. Now why wouldn’t anyone want to shell out money for a pair of lavender shoes? Oh, hindsight! It felt like the biggest drama in the world to me. This bridezilla got her way, but I still feel pretty silly about this, even today. The brunt of this reality (and, per-
haps, buying the cheapest dyed lavender shoes) made for a very entertaining wedding video. My poor ladies, flushed with champagne and not enough food, discovered the presence of pothole after pothole in the grassy aisle leading up to the gazebo. Four bridesmaids, including my matron of honor, outright tripped down the aisle. Two bridesmaids concentrated so hard on not falling that their stony faces looked like they were headed toward their doom, not a ceremony marking the new life of their girlfriend. Another bridesmaid tripped down a concrete bridge on the way to pictures after the ceremony, suffering multiple scrapes.
NEWSFLASH:
Dried blood doesn’t coordinate well with lavender fabric. If I had a do-over, I’d probably just choose a dress color and let each bridesmaid go wild on her dress style. So long as the tulle train isn’t puffier than mine, I have nothing to complain about.
