May is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month. Skin cancer is America’s most common cancer. Fortunately, it is one of the most preventable and treatable. About 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85% of melanoma cases are associated with sun exposure. Regular dermatological skin checks are an important part of preventive care to help identify and treat potential damage early on. Now is the perfect time to schedule your annual skin check! Prevention also plays a critical role in protecting your skin. Seek shade, cover up with clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking glasses, and most importantly, use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen every day. We offer a range of sun protection, antioxidant, and vitamin C products to protect and repair your skin all year long.

don’t know what it is about the start of spring that makes me feel like celebrating, but that warmer weather, flowers in bloom, the promise of something new on the horizon—it all evokes feelings of joy. I suddenly want to bust open a bottle of white wine and drink it languidly on my front porch with views of farmland in the distance. It also makes me want to get out and socialize; I get dressed up and hit the town whether that’s for dinner with family and friends or a concert, show, or movie I’ve been dying to see. It’s like I’m shaking off the final raindrops of winter and moving full speed ahead toward sunshine and late nights. Spring this year feels a little extra cheeerful, if you ask me. It’s hard to put my finger on but I think it’s the promise of a more normal spring and summer that has me ready to go all out on the season. After two years of canceled events and nonstarters, our event calendar is starting to get full again. Sure, we still deal with the one-off cancellation, often because a performer got sick (hasn’t this always been the case?), but all in all, events are much more dependable this year. So, what am I eyeballing this month? Stockton is hosting an epic food and fun festival rooted in its diverse culture, Cruise Night at the Miracle Mile is back on select Thursdays, and for those of us that want to treat our moms to something special, we can choose between hosted winery lunches and healing experiences like kayak paddles and sound baths. As always, it’s all in our pages. So, raise a glass to spring 2022; I don’t want to jinx us all, so I’ll leave it at that.

LAST THOUGHTS NEARBY CONCERTS Our theaters are bursting at the seams with performers ready to rock, but sometimes a trip into Sacramento is needed to catch our favorite headliners. At Golden One Center, home of the Sacramento Kings, big names are planning May debuts. Come to see For King & Country (May 8), Eric Church (May 11), Pearl Jam (May 18), and New Kids on the Block (June 2).

NATIONAL HOLIDAYS Every month seems to hold some important and some bizarre significances. While May is Jewish-American Heritage Month and Brain Tumor Awareness Month, it also holds the title for National Egg Month, National Salsa Month, and National Share a Story Month.

STOCKTON’S CRUISE NIGHT BRINGS BACK A

HISTORIC ACTIVITY

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD

N

ostalgia inspired Stockton’s big summer car event, a nod to the informal cruising that used to take place down the Miracle Mile. In 2019, Justin Juencke, who owns a solar company by day, resurrected cruising with an official monthly Cruise Night, a car-centric event that invites those of all ages—and with all types of vehicles—to hit the strip and show off. In addition to booths, classic rides, and plenty >>

| MAY 2022 25

{{

With La Palma’s support— and eventually the support of other businesses along the mile, too—the first event kicked off in July 2019. Nearly three years later, on a typical night, Cruise Night sees 100-150 cars, plus motorcycles. “I’ve seen cars anywhere from a muscle car to a lowrider to an old stock original car,” Justin says. With summer dates, the weather is usually in the event’s favor, however occasional hot spells can drive down attendance. Because the event runs from 6-8 PM, people can take advantage of the area’s two-hour parking. Some people cruise, some people park. “Young and old people get to come out and see cars they’ve never seen before,” Justin says. If you choose to attend, plan ahead. Cruise night can get busy, and that means reservations and a little patience may be needed. While you browse cars or wait for a table at nearby Cocoro Bistro Sushi Bar, stop by the Cruise Night booth where Justin sells merchandise to help fund the event, and is always up to talk about cars, including his dream vehicle, a 1959 Chevy Impala, which he doesn’t own yet. Proof of its success, Cruise Night—in its fourth season—has only gotten bigger each year. In 2022, there are six cruise nights on the calendar, which is the most Justin has planned so far. Always on the third Thursday of the month, mark your calendars for the kick-off on May 19. Other dates for the season are June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, and October 20. Justin says, “With cruise night, you see it all, and you always see something different.”

"I did this just to give back to my community,” – Justin Juencke, Founder

of spectators, Cruise Night also brings the community together to support the businesses on Miracle Mile, a necessity even more so following the on-and-off-again closures fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I just wanted something to come back to the mile,” Justin says of his desire to kickstart Cruise Night in 2019. The born-and-raised Stockton boy was inspired by his parents’ stories of driving up and down Miracle Mile in high school, often in his mom’s 1964 Corvette. “That’s kind of where it started,” he explains. “I knew that Stockton had a lot of cars." In addition to the history of the mile, it’s also the location that makes the midtown shopping and dining district the perfect spot for this,

26

MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM

according to Justin. The older buildings hint to a simpler time when (now defunct) Costanza’s still served classic Italian dishes in the 80s and Justin was just a young kid growing up in Stockton. “It was more about the community and bringing people back to the mile,” he says of the vision for Cruise Night. After returning to his hometown following a 14year hiatus in Southern California, Justin started eating out at La Palma often. It was with owners there that he first sparked conversations about a sanctioned cruise night. The ideas was to offer something fun and free for the community while also integrating Justin’s personal love of cars. There would be no awards and no stipulations on what types of cars could join and what couldn’t.

SENIOR CENTER LUNCH PROGRAM OFFERS

hether the goal is good food or quality company, both can be found at the Lolly Hansen Community Center. The San Joaquin Human Services Agency (HSA) offers a Congregate Meals program for seniors age 60 and up at 19 community centers in the Central Valley, including the Tracy outpost. “We currently have about 22 seniors who come to eat lunch together every day. Everybody was ecstatic when we reopened for in-person dining in August 2021,” says Jolene JauregiCorrell, recreation services manager for the City of Tracy. In 2021, the county program served an average of 1,150 seniors per month. “People who missed the socialization aspect…would greet each other from a safe distance when picking up meals to go,” says Carmen Matty-Cervantes, aging programs coordinator for the HSA of when in-person lunches were canceled. But today, the in-person aspects are back in full swing. “Before and after lunch, they’ll hang out

together in the lounge or take exercise or arts classes,” adds Amanda Jensen, recreation coordinator for the City of Tracy. “Socializing after a long period of not being together is so important.” Running the program isn’t cheap—the 2020-2021 fiscal year budget for the program was nearly $2 million—but funds from federal, federal stimulus, state, and private sources make it possible for Lolly Hansen to keep costs to seniors low, only asking for a $3 contribution per meal if possible. The program also serves other purposes, including encouraging positive nutrition, with nutrition education offered on a quarterly basis from Pamela Warmerdam, the program’s registered dietician. Program meals are designed to be healthy, low sodium, and follow U.S. Department of Agriculture recommendations for older adults. The staff at the Stockton Community Kitchen (SCK), a Stockton based-nonprofit, design and prepare meals

for the seniors at Lolly Hansen. “We prepare meals that promote and support wellness. In an average week, we might offer all-beef Italian meatballs, grilled salmon, countrystyle chili, chicken teriyaki, roast pork verde, fresh vegetables, and fruit. We make sure to have a varied menu for our client’s multicultural community,” says Leonel Castillo, cofounder of SCK. Rima Barkett, founder of SCK, says she hopes to feed as many seniors in need as possible. “We’ve ensured seniors enjoy meals by preparing healthy food that leans slightly gourmet but is still Americanized,” Rima says. “Having an open line of communication with senior communities, the City of Tracy, and the County ensures that we’re responsive.”

STOCKTON HOSTS FIRST DIVERSITY FESTIVAL  BY SARAH STEFFENS

id you know Stockton is home to one of the eleven ports spanning across one thousand miles of California, enabling imports and exports from all over the world? Opening in 1933, the Port of Stockton became a major transportation and commercial center in one of the nation’s richest agricultural regions thanks to the streams of the California Delta River, connecting Stockton to both Sacramento and San Francisco. Because of this industrial development, Stockton originated as a culturally and ethnically diverse city, including a large population of Chinese, Mexican, Filipino,

and Japanese people. The combination of ethnicities in Stockton and the region’s naturally rich soil and moderate climate has provided some of the most culturally diverse agricultural crops in the world. Crops such as cherries, asparagus, walnuts, almonds, potatoes, and tomatoes, as well as dairy, hay, and cattle, remain some of the top farming products in the San Joaquin region. And who can deny the success of the grape industry in this area, producing some of the world’s finest wines? To celebrate the culture and community of Stockton, the city is hosting its firstever Flavor Fest on May

14-15 at the Weber Point Events Center in Downtown Stockton. It will be a celebration of food, music, and cultures that make up the diverse communities in Stockton. “Families can expect family entertainment and hands-on activities, including art workshops, live music, global food vendors, artist vendors and merchants, live art, sculpture creation, and more,” says Amy Alpers of Visit Stockton. There will be music and dancing and creative activities for the whole family, craft beer and wine tasting, and even a Drag brunch and silent disco to celebrate the city’s diversity. City of Stockton will

play host to this unique event with a commitment to sustainability by using earth-friendly cutlery and serve ware, powered with clean energy. The city will draw visitors from across the region and promote local nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations. “All proceeds of the festival are being divided-up and distributed amongst the nonprofits that are volunteering their time to make this festival happen, so when an attendee buys an admission ticket or a beverage, those proceeds are going right back into our local community,” Amy says.

FARM TO GLASS Relationships between local farmers and restaurants make this trend possible in SJC  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER / D DAN HOOD

W

e’ve all heard the term Farm to Fork. It’s a philosophy that encourages the use of local produce to elevate a restaurant's cuisine to bring sustainability, freshness, and quality to each plate. The movement isn’t new, but there is a segment of the trend that is underrated and undiscovered—the farm to glass movement. At restaurants and bars across the nation, the movement has evolved from adding simple citrus twists and muddled fruit to freshly squeezed juices, shrubs, and flavorful infusions. For farm

to glass fans, mixologists are boasting the benefits of bringing local produce to urban cocktail programs, recognizing the rewards of using farm fresh local produce over the store-bought juices and cheap syrups available commercially. But the truth is, for us, the farm to glass movement isn’t just a trend. It’s who we are. Here in San Joaquin County, we farm one-fourth of the nation’s food and 40 percent of the country’s fruits and vegetables. A short drive on our local interstates will have you passing dairies, orchards, row crops, and farm fresh fruit stands. There are so many incredible products grown in our backyard, and a handful of restaurants that understand the need to focus on hyperlocal goodness by crafting cocktails

using produce that is grown, raised, and harvested on family farms in the 209.

HABANERO HOTS & LUCERO FARMS

At Habanero Hots, their farm to glass movement is at the core of the restaurant’s overall philosophy. Owner John DeNigris, alongside his culinary team, are huge proponents of using local produce. In fact, he credits it as inspiration for turning out the best products, not just in the kitchen, but in the bar as well. For over a decade, DeNigris has counted on Lucero Farms to supply his restaurant with local, organically grown fruits and vegetables for a boost in flavor. His relationship with Kurtis Lucero is like

a well-oiled machine. Lucero lets John know what is ready to be harvested and DeNigris orders produce that is picked ripe and ready to consume. A great example is each spring when berries are at their ripest and the mercury is rising and Habanero Hots uses them to bring out the best in their cocktail program. The Fresh Berry Popsicle Martini is a perfect example of how farmers and restaurateurs work together to bring the WOW factor to every sip. Lucero Farms delivers flats of fresh strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries—picked at optimal ripeness—to Habanero Hots. Then, the bartenders begin mixing their magic. “Fresh is a flavor,” DeNigris boasts. “When we can get fresh and local produce in our cocktails, it leads to a better product.”

The berries for the popsicle martini are muddled and poured into popsicle molds to freeze. Once they are ready for consumption, the popsicle is placed in a martini glass and a shot of Grey Goose Vodka is served alongside the colorful concoction. The result—a bright, flavorful libation to help you keep your cool. DeNigris values his ties with the Lucero Family because he knows the product is farmed responsibly, maintains exceptional quality, and supports a family farm. Curtis Lucero retired from the Army as a military police non-commissioned officer after 20 years of active duty to come home and help run his family’s farm. He along with his wife Priscilla farm around twenty acres of 100 percent certified organic produce including melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, berries, and more. Not to mention, SJMAG.COM

Don’t sleep on this garden to glass house specialty at Habanero Hots. The Gin and Tonic here is aromatic and bold. They start by steeping juniper berries, coriander, and citrus, before straining the herbaceous liquid over a glass containing Bombay Sapphire Gin and a house made lemon tonic, for a homemade gin with fresh flavors straight from the farm.

Lucero Farms is a fan of sustainability, creating a biodiverse ecosystem to maintain soil fertility for prime produce. So, when Habanero Hots needs freshly picked cucumbers for their Cucumber Basil Margarita, DeNigris knows who to call. Lucero delivers the goods and once again, they begin stirring up the final product. Crisp and clean cucumbers are muddled with basil for an aromatic elixir and added to a glass with Santo Blanco Tequila, a housemade sweet and sour, and freshly squeezed lime juice for optimal freshness.

TOWNE HOUSE RESTAURANT & GOLDEN BEAR RANCHES

When we talked to the folks at Towne House at Wine and Roses, a common theme kept popping up. The relationship between the farmers who provide them with the best local produce and the restaurants that use them is one of the most instrumental forces in creating fresh, flavorful libations.

44 44

MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM

This is why Chef Scott Davis, Chef de Cuisine at Towne House, values the efforts of Golden Bear Ranches based here in Lodi. At Golden Bear Ranches, owner John Gibson, makes every effort to plant the fruits and vegetables Towne House needs to satisfy their guests' palates. “John is our go-to guy for legendary produce,” says Davis. “The ability to get first dibs on the finest fruit is beneficial to both our cocktail and culinary programs at Towne House.” Where many restaurants source their produce from large corporate suppliers where the fruit is picked long before it makes its way to the glass, sourcing produce from Golden Bear Ranches takes both quality and freshness to the next level at Towne House. They harvest their goods in the morning and deliver them the same day to the restaurant, and that is an example of the farm to glass movement at its finest. One of their springtime sensations created by Marie Ackerman, assistant manager, sommelier, and bar manager, is a Bees Knees using Golden Bear Ranch honey. They start with Bar Hill Gin

because they use wild honey in the distilling process for added depth of flavor and add fresh lemon juice and BGR honey. Ackerman likes to serve it up in a martini coupe and garnish the cocktail with a lemon twist for added zing. It’s a cocktail that wouldn’t be on the menu if it weren’t for the efforts of Gibson and Golden Bear Ranches. In the past several years, the California bee population was suffering from colony collapse and no one knew why. Farmers are reliant on bees to pollinate their crops, and without bees, we were facing a dire situation. While most folks think bees feed on almond blossoms or other orchards, what they really need are flowers to feed on. “I knew I had to do my part to try and revive a struggling bee population,” says Gibson. “We planted rows and rows of cover crops like clover, lupin, and black-eyed Susan’s, to give the bees nectar to feed on.” The results have been astounding. And because of their efforts, Gibson can deliver local honey to restaurants like Towne House and grocery stores like Podesto’s. It’s a fitting example of how farmers’ efforts can truly improve the quality and quantity of local produce available. At Towne House, the chefs and

bartenders have another tool at their fingertips when it comes to farm to glass cocktails—their own edible garden on property. From fresh herbs to citrus and edible flowers, the team loves pulling rosemary, basil, and mint from the garden to make their own syrups and shrubs. One of their summer ready libations, titled Pretty in Pink, is made using fresh rhubarb and mint from the garden. The culinary team creates a double syrup made from fresh rhubarb and combines it with Hangar 1 Vodka and lime juice. The drink is garnished with mint from the garden and poured into a highball glass. The outcome is a colorful drink that is balanced, both sweet and bright. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” Ackerman says. “The flavor itself is so much more profound because it’s from our own backyard. It really does make a difference.” We think it’s fair to say that fresh produce makes a tastier, more refreshing drink. Picked at optimal ripeness and packed with flavor, the farm to glass movement brings cutting edge cocktails with a twist to local restaurants. So, become a locavore and support the restaurants and farmers that feed us in San Joaquin County. We are blessed beyond measure to have such bounty at our fingertips.

Be sure to try this springtime sensation at Towne House featuring farm fresh strawberries. The Strawberry Margarita is made by muddling ripe red strawberries and straining the mixture into a glass of Casa Nobles Blanco Tequila. The final touch, a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a salted rim for balance.

THE FACE OF BANKING San Joaquin County and the rest of the nation continues the slow recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this crisis, the Bank of Stockton, considered an essential services business, remained open and available to help customers with their banking needs. “We’ve been conducting business as close to usual as possible, despite these unusual times,” says Douglass M. Eberhardt II, Bank of Stockton President and CEO. As a local community bank, Bank of Stockton’s team worked tirelessly to help both customers and non-customers in securing much needed funding during this time, acting as a conduit for both rounds of the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The bank assisted customers with successfully securing approximately 3,400 loans totaling over $360 million to help small businesses weather the pandemic. “In these unprecedented times, when our communities need their bank most, it is our job to be here for them,” Douglass says. Bank of Stockton has survived depressions, recessions, economic downturns, and uncertainties throughout its 155-year history. When

In the midst of the pandemic, the bank built a second location in Lodi on Kettleman Lane, moved into a new location in Pine Grove, and will be moving to a new location in Sonora in the spring to meet the needs of its growing customer base. With 20 branches in 16 cities throughout nine counties, Bank of Stockton is well-known for its personalized service and long-tenured bankers. “Together, we will weather this storm and Withstand the Test of Time as we have for over a century and a half,” Douglass says.

THE FACE OF CANINE BOARDING, TRAINING & GROOMING Jack and Kathy Weber love dogs. They have a long history of caring for their furry children, raising and competing with several breeds since the 1960s. One lesson the couple learned during their decades caring for, training, and grooming dogs was that dogs, much like children, have their own culture and a lot of needs. The most well-behaved dogs are well taken care of: groomed regularly, kept pest-free, healthy, and trained. To help families in San Joaquin County cultivate strong relationships with their own four-legged friends, the duo opened The Canine Culture, a full service stop that provides a variety of services including boarding, training, and grooming. The added convenience is it’s all under one roof. And Jack and Kathy pride themselves on being handson—no corporate management team taking over here. For over twenty years, The Canine Culture has provided outstanding care for pets when owners need to be away. “Good hygiene contributes to good health for canines just as it does for humans,” Jack explains. That’s why The Canine Culture places an emphasis on keeping canines in their care well-groomed and educating customers on how best to keep up their health and Burnham Cellar

ensure a long lasting partnership. “Our grooming services are first rate and will ensure your canine is in the best possible condition.” The couple also notes that relationships with our pets are give and take, and training doesn’t only benefit the pooch but the human owner, too. Jack adds, “We help customers understand their canines, how to teach and learn from them to build the best possible lifetime relationship.” While it takes a big team to provide the highest level of care for pets who are boarded on site, come in for routine grooming, or for training, Jack and Kathy remain part of the day-to-day operations and actually live on-premises. With a carefully selected and welltrained staff, the family-owned business ensures the finest level of care and superior results in all of their service endeavors. “The canine comes first with us,” Jack says.

THE FACE OF WINGS Husband-and-wife team Steve and Jaime Smith are the faces behind the brand, turning out quality wings (and other fare) to local patrons in Stockton. Many know Steve most for his NFL career where he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and then NFL Europe from 2001-2004. And it was that football party atmosphere that served as the launching pad for the thriving Stockton wing shop. After years of serving up grub to friends while watching the game at their home in Oregon, Steve and Jaime ended up back in her hometown of Stockton. It’s then they decided their next game move would be an audible, switching gears from the stadium to the kitchen. Steve is the ultimate fry daddy, responsible for cooking up the fresh-never-frozen wings made to order. As a result, it may take up to 20 minutes to get your food, but the final product is worth the wait. The duo came into the experience without any formal culinary experience, but that hasn’t stopped them from taking home five years of Best Wings awards from San Joaquin Magazine, cementing their place in the local culinary scene as the local faces of wings. Other accolades include a spotlight on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri, and the need to upgrade their space

to a larger kitchen where they could meet the growing demands of both locals and an international clientele. Roadtrippers and visitors from across the world stop into Smitty’s based on reputation alone and Steve and Jaime can proudly say they’ve welcomed guests from Japan, Europe, and more. Upgrading to a commercial kitchen and going from 49 seats to 123 allows even more wings to fly out of the kitchen. And while Steve may be the mastermind behind the meats, it’s Jaime who is responsible for curating the delectable dipping sauces customers rave about. “Everything we put on the table comes from our heart and our home,” Jaime says. A recent menu expansion allows the eatery to offer cocktails to guests, but they are taking any changes slow as to not move away from what has made Smitty’s stand out. The beer-and-wine-only restaurant is now turning tricks behind the bar, serving up flavored mimosas and Micheladas to clientele, all while maintaining the neighborhood sports bar vibe that made it famous.

THE FACE OF INTERIOR DESIGN Those looking to renovate a residential property rush to work with Kathleen Jennison and her team at KTJ Design Co. The entrepreneur and businesswoman has made a successful career out or turning humdrum houses in Stockton and neighboring towns into masterpieces families can’t wait to call home. With her signature service, The Meticulous Method, Kathleen combines both project management and design. Her organizational skills keep homeowners on track when it comes to budget, timeline, planning, décor, and more. The trick is creating parameters early, and not letting clients break the bank once they are knee-deep in decisions. KTJ Design assists with a wide range of home renovation projects but their bread and butter is complete restorations, ripping houses down to their studs and designing them literally from the ground up. This allows for careful replanning of space to build a home that meets a client’s individual needs. Then, elements such as flooring and wallpaper, paint and appliances are added before Kathleen and her team use their expert eye and available 2,400 square foot showroom in Stockton to assist clients in choosing custom furniture for the space and décor to bring the final picture to fruition. Every finish

from floor to ceiling is carefully selected with the help of an interior design expert. Kathleen’s empire started in 2006 after a car accident and traumatic brain injury altered her personality. The CPA suddenly had an urge to dive into her artistic side and at the urgence of her doctors started taking art classes to improve cognitive function. A few years later Kathleen graduated with her second bachelor’s degree, this time in Interior Design from the Art Institute in Sacramento. This coupled with her existing degree in business administration formed the perfect combination of skills to start a home design company during a recession and continue to thrive even through a pandemic. Along the way, Kathleen has amassed a team of interior design professionals to assist in bringing customer’s visions to life while also opening her boutique furniture store in Stockton as a means of giving customers a place to see and feel products before ordering their own custom pieces.

THE FACE OF AUTO REPAIR The motto at Fix Auto is a very reassuring one: “Taking care of cars and the people who drive them.” As Stockton’s oldest body shop, it’s clear they’ve got that down to an art. And while the auto repair shop has transitioned to Fix Auto, it is still operated by Aurora Collision, meaning customers get the same great service they've come to expect. Owner Shaun Arroyo strives to make the painful process of collision repair as stress-free as possible. “I’m like the car lawyer,” he jokes. “I only want my customers to worry about when the car will be done.” But once you’re in Fix Auto's capable hands, even that will be a refreshingly easy process. With systems that keep customers notified of their car’s progress, plus Shaun’s dedication to explaining the repair process and how long it’ll take, there’s truly little for anyone to worry about. At their new location, even their hours are convenient – and, they’re open on Saturdays, which is especially helpful for commuters who can’t come in on weekdays.

But Fix Auto Stockton does more than just repair your car after an accident. They can also do detailing, decal removal, and headlight restoration. Additionally, Shaun is happy to inspect used cars, free of charge, prior to purchase, potentially saving you the hassle of future repairs. Once they’re finished with your car, you can take comfort in the fact that you’ll have a lifetime warranty. And if you have an emergency, give them a call – even after hours, Shaun will get the message and can help you address the problem immediately. “I don’t care what kind of car comes in,” promises Shaun. “It’ll get the same kind of attention.”

THE FACE OF PUBLIC GOLF Manteca Park Golf Course is fast becoming one of the top courses in the Central Valley for playability and value, and The City of Manteca is proud of its hometown course, which represents some of the best greens in the Valley. Living up to its motto, ‘The Public Course with the Country Club Feel’, Director of Golf Jeff DeBenedetti says, “We treat our customers like family and we do what we can to exceed their expectations. All players of all ability levels are welcome and will enjoy their round of golf here.” It’s not only one of the most affordable courses in the area, but also one of the best quality. Jeff and his team are embracing the idea of community at the course. A big part of the mission involves expanding junior golf in Manteca. Employees told Jeff they once left the city to play golf at the junior level because there wasn’t a local outlet. All of that has changed. Manteca Park hosts four junior programs to hit every caliber of player. And with Jeff at the helm—his last junior golf team won the junior’s PGA national championship—young golfers are in good hands. The full facility is more than an 18-hole course. It also offers a driving range, golf carts, a chipping green, and a putting green,

plus a banquet hall, coffee shop, clubhouse, and full-service golf shop. For those who haven’t seen the course since 2017, there was a significant re-design. The holes were renumbered to encourage a better game flow and a faster pace of play, plus a better last hole experience. What was once known as a slow course can now reasonably be played in just over four hours. The course is committed to maintaining its high degree of play. The City of Manteca’s superintendent keeps the grounds looking fresh, the playing conditions top-notch, and the drainage running seamlessly. Condition-wise, Jeff says it’s one of the top courses in the San Joaquin Valley, and the prices give players the best value in the valley $31 on weekdays, ($36 on weekends to walk). Perhaps the biggest perk, however, is the course location. “It’s right here in peoples’ backyard,” Jeff says.

THE FACE OF BUYING & SELLING HOMES 2021 is a wonderful year for real estate in San Joaquin County. The housing market has thrived over the course of the pandemic, fueled by lower interest rates and work schedule flexibility. For many, moving out of big cities created a surge in available buyers in Stockton, Tracy, Manteca, Lodi, Lathrop, and beyond, so houses for sale were enjoying multiple offers and big price tags. While home prices are on the rise, however, those low interest rates make buying a home affordable still because with less money tied up in interest, you can pay off your home faster and go for homes with a higher listing price. All around, it’s a good year for home ownership. If you are looking to buy or sell a home in SJC, call on Lance McHan. The real estate agent started as an appraiser in 2000 but stepped away from the industry after the market crash. In 2015, a friend convinced him to come back, this time as an agent. “I resisted for the longest time because after dealing with agents as an appraiser I didn't have much respect for [agents],” Lance explains. However, he also saw an opportunity to be the type of agent he didn’t see in the business near enough. His friend gave

64 64

MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM

him the advice, “If you become an agent you can change the perception of realtors one client at a time,” and that exactly what Lance has done for the past six years. Lance credits his friendly sales style and ability to work well with other agents for his success in the local real estate market. His goal is always to make the process run as smoothly as possible for clients, working with other agents as allies and not adversaries. By putting his client’s first, Lance has amassed a large number of local listings, adding to the slim inventory as much as possible. So, whether you’re looking to buy or sell in San Joaquin County, Lance McHan is your guy, always working diligently to ensure his clients walk away with a smile on their face and nothing but good things to say about their experience.

CARDIOLOGY Dr. Manshadi knew from a young age that he wanted to be a physician. “During a complicated pregnancy and birth, competent doctors in Israel saved both my and my mother’s lives,” he explains. Today, he seeks to emulate the confidence of those doctors by saving lives, educating others, and truly honoring the Hippocratic Oath. Named a top doctor by Castel Connolly, Dr. Manshadi began volunteering and administering EKGs at UC Davis Medical Center as a college student at the age of 18. There, he met Ezra Amsterdam, a teacher and mentor. “He instilled in me the love of cardiology,” he says. There was not only a love, but serious talent, as Dr. Manshadi dove deeper into the study—and with the ability to justify and analyze complex entities and categorize them, he excelled. “If your gift and passion are synonymous, you will be successful and happy.” In May 2013 Manshadi Heart Institute welcomed patients with a simple yet profound mission: Improve the lives of patients through excellence in cardiovascular education, heart disease prevention, and the highest-quality treatment available. From prevention to intervention, the Institute offers a full spectrum of cardiac care. Dr. Manshadi personally improves the lives of the general public, raising awareness of sudden cardiac death in athletes and donating his book proceeds to purchase and install AEDs in schools across the country. “It’s very important to know how to use and AED, and you never know when you’re able to save someone’s life,” he says. “When applied within first two minutes, there’s a 90 percent survival rate.” In his free time, Dr. Manshadi enjoys coaching soccer and supporting a league he funds for young children.

THE FACE OF SKIN HEALTH Beauty isn’t just skin deep; the health of our skin is what matters most. At Golden State Dermatology, with clinics in Tracy, Manteca, Lodi, and beyond, qualified physicians treat your body’s largest organ—your skin—from surface to root. In addition to cosmetic procedures, (which have expanded along with the addition of GSD’s newest clinic in Lodi), the clinics offer skin cancer diagnosis and a variety of treatment options. “Our Golden State Dermatology dermatologists are board-certified specialists in identifying and treating skin cancer,” says Andrea Miles, marketing manager at GSD. Treatment options include surgical and non-surgical procedures, as well as Mohs Micrographic Surgery, performed by Minh Dang, MD and Abdallah Khourdaji, MD. Mohs surgery is a skin-sparing treatment that works to remove the most common types of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas with minimal scarring. The doctors at GSD care about your skin and offer preventative treatment and advice, as well as medical intervention. Most important, they agree, is wearing sunscreen. Because skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and can easily go unnoticed, doctors at GSD recommend an annual appointment with their board-certified doctors. For higher-risk patients, more frequent exams may be necessary. And what better time to get started on protecting your skin’s health than in May, which is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? After all, the earlier skin

cancer is caught, the more options there are for treatment and better outcomes. When you have a qualified dermatologist behind you, you can face the world with the confidence to be your best. At GSD, you can’t go wrong. Mariam Amin, MD, is a medical and cosmetic dermatologist dedicated to providing the best possible care. Minh Dang, MD, FAAD, and Abdallah Khourdaji, MD provide a full range of dermatology treatments as well as performing the Mohs Micrographic Surgery mentioned above. Christian Jones, MD, FAAD, is a medical dermatologist with over 25 years of clinical experience in medical and surgical dermatology. And that is only a sampling of the providers working in San Joaquin County to help patients fight skin cancer, improve their skin’s health, and reduce the appearance of aging.

THE FACE OF MEXICAN DINING It’s a family affair at Don Luis Mexican Restaurant, where the entire Rivera clan works hard to serve delicious and authentic Mexican meals from recipes prepared by their families and passed down through the generations—that’s the secret sauce to Chef and Owner Cuahtemoc (Cuate) Rivera’s success with the Stockton eatery. And unlike some restaurants, this familyowned operation sees Cuate and his family at the helm, all of whom are hands on—not only are the recipes their own, but they all work in the restaurant, serving meals alongside staff, and lending a hand in the kitchen. In addition to Cuate, his wife Alexandra Rivera is often spotted on-site as well as their five children Alex, Tito, Jesh, Abby, and Gio (and number six is on the way). At Don Luis, Cuate makes a point of sourcing fresh ingredients from local suppliers whenever possible, meaning your meal at Don Luis doesn’t just support the Rivera family but other local families and businesses, as well. And the unique meals made in the Don Luis kitchen—think popular plates including the torta Cubana, three amigos fajitas, and a collection of sizzling soups sure to make your mouth water—come from the hand of Cuate

himself, a head chef who moved from Mexico City to Stockton in 1996 and explored European cuisine in 2011, bringing with him his worldly expertise. With so many items on the menu it can be hard to choose, but the tortillas may just be the real prize of the establishment. Homemade, fresh, and served warm, we recommend dipping them into one of the menu’s soups or the queso dip for extra flavor. Don’t forget to wash down your poblano chile rellenos with a beverage from the full bar. Don Luis’ has become just as known for their over-the-top cocktail concoctions as they have their Mexican cuisine. No meal here is complete without one of the bar specialties, featuring everything from flavored margaritas and mojitos to decked-out Bloody Marys and Micheladas. THE FACE OF GOJU RYU Tibon’s Goju Ryu Fighting Arts and Supplies has been a pillar in the karate community since 1984, teaching the system of Karate known as Goju Ryu under the international organization of Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai. Starting with its Stockton location, the dojo now operates additional satellite karate school locations at Stockton GymStars, Modesto GymStars, Hiers Goju Ryu in Lodi, and United Bay Area Karate Club in San Jose. Goju Ryu combines fighting traditions from both Okinawa Japan (Go) and China (Ju). Loosely translated, go means hard and ju means soft, resulting in a balanced style of fighting that is able to tow the line between direct and indirect fighting movements. “The mixture of the combined cultural fighting systems makes our style very affective for self-defense,” says Owner and Chief Instructor Gene Tibon. But while Tibon’s is one of the goto places for self-defense training, it’s equally important for competitive athletes. “Over the last 37 years we have developed over 450 gold medal national champions, 220 Pan-American karate champions, and currently have a 2021 Summer Games Olympic hopeful in Karate.” In 2019, Tibon was awarded his eighth Dan Certification (an eighth degree black belt), which made him the second highest ranking senior in the Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai organization in the world. He’s also been inducted into 12 Martial Arts Hall of Fame

organizations including the Stockton Sports Hall of Fame and the A.A. Stagg High School Hall of Fame. “I’m now the Ambassador of Masters Hall of Fame, one of the most prestigious Hall of Fame organizations in the world,” Tibon says. Community is also important to Tibon and his team. In addition to fundraising for the studio’s athletes to advance their careers and pay their way to competitions, Tibon’s has also had a heavy hand in raising money for children’s charities and other causes through benefit tournaments. The goal is to raise a future generation of modern-day samurais—because samurai means to serve. Students who sign up at Tibon’s do so on a month-to-month basis, no contracts! All instructors are DOJ and FBI background certified clear. The dojo adheres to safety protocols to fight against COVID-19, and when students receive their black belts at Tibon’s Goju Ryu, they are internationally recognized and certified out of Japan with Goju Ryu Uchiage Kai, member of the Japan Karate Federation.

THE FACE OF PLANTS AND POTTERY When it comes to aesthetics, Stockton Supplies is a onestop shop for your eye-catching home and party needs. Moji Mohammadkhan is the face behind the business, which offers mix of event supplies and rentals as well as plants and pottery for sale. Stockton Supplies/Rosegarden has been known as a provider of gorgeous rentals aimed at making every event shine since 2005. It’s convenient showroom on Rosemarie Lane carries an assortment of chairs, tables, china, flatware, serve ware, and more, to execute everything from a grand wedding to an intimate birthday party. Some of the most popular items include as a hot dog rotisserie, cotton candy machine, double margarita machine, chocolate fountain, popcorn maker, champagne fountain, and more, all aimed at impressing guests and ensuring a good time. The local shop, however, recently expanded its operations to serve more than just event planners and locals looking to throw a bash. Since 2021, the Rosemarie Lane store also carries a large array of plants and pots, tapping into a trendy market. Making use of the showroom’s outdoor space, customers can browse small and large (and we mean HUGE) pots for their growing gardens. The pieces serve both function and design, offering

quality craftmanship that supports healthy plant growth as well as vibrant colors and shapes to fit every yard and aesthetic. It's not just the vessels available at the garden shop, either. An outdoor greenhouse is the ideal environment for growing an array of plants for both indoor and outdoor use. This way, guests can pick up their pots and choose what to fill them with all in one fell swoop. Experts on staff have excellent recommendations for what to plant, when, and where. You can get advice on what grows best in your yard, what soil to use, and even when to re-pot plants. The addition of the new shop didn’t stop operations of the rental business. Instead, it acted as an expansion to bring more options to local residents all with a common thread of creating a gorgeous space whether it’s as temporary as a diner party or as permanent as your own backyard.

THE FACE OF WATERFRONT ICE CREAM Sunset Sweets is back in business. The ice cream and pastry shop that first opened 13 years ago at Tower Park Marina when it was still a (KOA) opened its newest location in April at the Village West Marina, calling Garlic Brother’s and Bob’s at the Marina its neighbors. Specializing in Gunther’s Ice Cream—out of Sacramento—and homemade pastries including cookies, muffins, sweet breads, brownies, and more, cooked fresh each morning and all made by Owner Tuyen Duong, patrons can satisfy their sweet tooths at the waterfront shop seven days per week. And while Sunset Sweets sells a variety of tasty goods, the emphasis during summer is on the coolest treats, including authentic Hawaiian shaved ice, fresh fruit smoothies, thick and flavorful milkshakes, banana splits, and other ice cream-based desserts. Tuyen even has a special recipe for homemade waffle cones, creating the perfect vessel to shovel Gunther’s creative flavors into your mouth. The opening comes less than two years after the outpost’s Lodi shop on Kettleman closed in 2020 during the start of the pandemic, which operated for four years.

Dennis and Tuyen’s Sunset Sweets journey started in 2011. At the time, Dennis had already retired but he and Tuyen wanted something to do together. “Ice cream is a fun business,” Dennis says. “We make people happy.” Since then, they have owned three versions of the sweets shop, including this newest venture. When Tuyen and Dennis aren’t there, Destiny—the shop’s manager—will be the one greeting and serving customers. Aside from the goodies mentioned above, coffee is also on the menu. Tuyen and Dennis brew espresso beans from Trail Coffee Roasters and feature a full coffee station. While customers from all over San Joaquin County (and beyond) are welcome to visit Sunset Sweets, it serves a special purpose for those who spend their days on the water whether they are boating or just catching a little R&R. It’s location gave Dennis the inspiration for its slogan “The Sweetest Place on the Delta,” where the couple sell calories by the pound.

THE FACE OF PHARMACY When it comes to a neighborhood pharmacy that feels like family, Hammer Lane Pharmacy is the place to go! Dr. Amir Khan is a Stockton native and has been serving his community as a pharmacist for over 23 years. Amir is an alumni of the University of the Pacific (UOP) where he received his Doctorate of Pharmacology. Aside from working as a community pharmacist, Amir has served as an adjunct professor with UOP for over 18 years, helping future pharmacists gain experience in the practice of community pharmacy. To serve the community better, Amir opened Hammer Lane Pharmacy in 2018. It is located next to Sutter Gould in the Food Source Shopping Center. Combined with Amir’s experience, knowledge, expertise and an amazing staff, the entire crew at Hammer Lane Pharmacy provides patients with a genuine caring attitude and superior service. Here, patients feel valued and taken care of. For many it’s the little extras that Hammer Lane Pharmacy provides that makes all of the difference, including one-onone service, gentle direction, and thorough explanations of

medications and how to take them for best results. The proof is in the accolades. Hammer Lane, with Amir at the helm, has three consecutive Best Of awards for Best Independent Pharmacy for 2019, 2020, and 2021 by San Joaquin Magazine. Amir is a strong believer that you are only as good as your team and he is extremely proud to be working with one that is top notch. The team at Hammer Lane Pharmacy feels what separates them from their competition is personalized service; short wait times; convenience offerings such as curbside pick-up, free local home delivery, being open 7 days a week, accepting all insurances, and stocking many immunizations including COVID-19, pneumonia, Shingrix, Tdap, flu shots, and more. The ability to have immunizations administered in a private room is the icing on the cake. here’s a lot to see in New York City—so much so that even a week in the big apple doesn’t feel like enough time to take in all of the sites. While it’s inevitable that you won’t be able to pack it all in, we’re confident you can hit the biggest attractions if you plan ahead, taking the city borough by borough. Read on for our tips on what to see and do in each of NYC’s boroughs—some expected and some a little more inventive.

CHELSEA

Chelsea is often recognized for its extensive number of art galleries and urban food, but there’s more to see than just paintings in this NYC neighborhood. When it comes to Chelsea, the highline and the market are both must sees, and since they connect, it’s easy to do both in one fell swoop! Start at the Chelsea Market and give yourself some time to browse. Many eateries don’t open until later in the day so if you’re looking to eat here (which you should!), it may be best to plan for a midday outing. Inside the market are delicious options including Los Tacos No. 1 and The Lobster Place. The variations include sit down dining and grab-and-go grub, plus bouquets of fresh flowers and gift and clothing shops. The market is larger than anticipated so you may need some time to see it all. For a quick cup of coffee (that you can take with you to walk the highline) Amy’s Bread serves the best. After you’ve gotten your fill at the market, make your way to the highline, a defunct railroad track that once ran through the neighborhood and has since been transformed into a greenspace and pedestrian walking trail above the city. The Chelsea Highline has a more than 20-year history, that you can learn about as your stroll. Plus, one side of it ends at The Edge, which is the next must-do experience on our list.

Chelsea Market

There are a lot of viewing points throughout the city where you can see the sparkling lights at night or big buildings during the day. Regardless of how many of these high-rise observation decks you want to hit, The Edge should be one of them. More modern than the originals such as the Empire State Building, The Edge includes a large triangular platform, a seated viewing area, and a full bar. One highlight is the section of see-through glass that allows guests to look down 100 stories to the streets below. It can take a while to get to your turn, but the in-line experience resembles that of a Disneyland ride so you won’t get bored while you wait. If you want to extend your day into evening in Chelsea, there are two nighttime activities we recommend most. The first is a Sunset Cruise on Yacht Manhattan, operated by Classic Harbor Line NYC. The boat takes guests past some of New York’s most beautiful sites from the water. It’s a new perspective for seeing all there is to see of the city, with an added dose of luxury.

76

MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM

The other option is a speakeasy with a niche performance style. Bathtub Gin is hidden behind an unmarked door (only made noticeable by the bouncer standing outside). Inside you can grub on some curious, high-end concoctions and mostly ginbased cocktails (beer, wine, and other liquors are served, too). However, if you come on Tuesdays or Sundays, you’ll experience a real treat when the girls of the club make use of the restaurant’s copper bathtub centerpiece to put on a wild (and wet) burlesque show for guests. Looking for a nightcap? Hit the Starbucks Reserve Roastery for a cocktail. More than a coffeeshop, here you can sample a wide range of Starbucks’ most elite beans, take a tour, or order something special from the barista. Scott's Pizza Tour

BROOKLYN

Just outside of NYC is Brooklyn, and while technically not a part of city proper, it’s certainly worth a visit. Depending on the time of year, your Brooklyn activities may change, but a trek across the Brooklyn Bridge is noteworthy regardless. Either walk the pedestrian section of the bridge from FiDi (NYC’s financial district) or rent a bike and make your way across it faster. Either option is better than driving, especially since there’s no need to rent a car in this city. You won’t be alone as you make the journey; tourists flock to the Brooklyn Bridge to take photos, shop handmade goods and small knick knacks, and enjoy the views. From here, if you’re an NBA fan, we suggest walking the extra mile or so to Barclay’s Stadium, home of the Brooklyn Nets. The modern court is all bright lights and excitement as the buzzer sounds. When you have a chance, explore the concourse; the food here goes beyond hot dogs and nachos. After the game, it’s easy to get back home—a train station is directly outside of the stadium to take you back to whatever borough is home base. Or, have dinner instead. Before or after the game, burgers or (any other American fare) is delicious at Junior’s. What they are best known for though is their cheesecake. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying a slice. If you get to Brooklyn with time to spare, we suggest a pregame cocktail at The Brooklyn Bridge Bistro, which also serves food.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT

It’s easy to knock off several big attractions at once in this buzzy borough. Walk down Wall Street, see the ticker in action, grab a photo with the infamous Charging Bull and the Fearless Girl, and catch some of the best views of the Statue of Liberty. To see the latter, a viewing site is on the water, but plenty of restaurants overlook it, too. The best way to get up close and personal without taking a boat to it is riding the always-free Staten Island Fairy. Stand on the right side of the boat from Manhattan to Staten Island and you’ll get great photos of Lady Liberty in the background. If you’re here for the nightlife, Stone Street is where it’s at. We highly recommend embracing the Irish culture at many of the short, pedestrian-only street’s pubs. Don’t leave without experiencing the

78

creativity at The Cauldron Magical Pub. Here, drinks are served in mini cauldrons or old-school teapots. The presentation is everything and the beverages match the theme of the space. A large faux tree in the center of the bar dons taps for different beers and upstairs events including drag brunch and bingo take place. Another after-hours spot is The Little Shop. This FiDi speakeasy is tucked into the back of a convenience store so you’ll have to know where you’re going to find it. When you get back there, order a craft cocktail and grab snacks from the store’s shelves. Waiters will happily plate your bounty for you to enjoy inside. For food, there are a few must-visit places in this district. First, The Dead Rabbit, a two-story parlor and taproom that serves small plates, main entrées, and oysters. The cocktails here are

inspired and boozy, and the dishes include everything from deviled eggs and toasties to Irish Lamb Stew. For lunch, Maestro Pasta is like Chipotle for Italian food. Giant machines pump out fresh pasta at the front of the shop as patrons go down the line to select pasta type, sauce, and toppings. The end product is undeniably fresh and unbelievably delicious, served in full (6 oz.) or half (3 oz.) sizes. If its brunch that you’re after, FiDi is home to an Australian Café called Hole in the Wall. The quaint space serves up avocado toast, benedicts, and waffles in the mornings and offers happy hour later in the day. The coffee here is divine if you’re looking for a jolt. The other breakfast option nearby is Leo’s Bagels, because if NYC bagels are on your tourist must list, this spot won’t let you down.

escape BROADWAY

See a Broadway show—check! The options here are always robust and constantly changing. You can see everything from Broadway’s biggest smashes such as Hamilton and Harry Potter & The Cursed Child to classics including The Lion King and Chicago. Personally, the stage at Moulin Rouge (a permanent theater display) can’t be beat, plus the updated musical numbers make for more laughs and catchier tunes. If you’re looking to expand on the theme of the evening, a precursor dinner at Chez Josephine fits the bill. The French restaurant is decked out with décor that’ll get you into the spirit before your show. Insider Tip: a Times Square

Today’s Tix booth offers same day tickets for less to many shows, but you’ll need to line up early to guarantee a spot.

MIDTOWN

Midtown is home to NYC’s most notable attractions including the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). This is where the bulk of the tourist must-sees will be so we say make the most of your time in Midtown and walk by your favorites, or schedule tours to learn more. The Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, and The Flatiron

Chez Josephine

Building are all nearby and easy to access by foot, city bike, or subway. A lesser-known attraction in Midtown is the Museum of Sex, an intimate museum that details everything from pop culture sexual references to historic genitalia mutilation. After the learning portion of the tour is over, which spans three stories, you’ll embark on a raunchy funland featuring bounce houses, arcade games, and more that fit the theme. If you work up an appetite while in this neighborhood, a trip to Serendipity 3 offers fun and big portions. Don’t leave without sampling the infamous Frozen Hot Chocolate but opt for a meal first. The burgers, hot dogs, salads, and more are all large enough to share. When it comes to drinks, not all places are created equal. For ambiance we can’t think of anywhere more spectacularly fun than the Magic Hour Rooftop at Moxy Times Square. Take a ride up the elevator and immediately get transported to another world, one that fancies blossoming carousels (where you can eat and drink), a floral masterpiece of a bar, and an outdoor putting green with provocative pink statues. Back on the ground, fans of How I Met Your Mother won’t want to miss McGee’s Pub, the bar the show’s centerpiece McLaren’s was based on. In addition to cast photos plastered all over the walls, the traditional Irish pub has simple drinks that nod to the show’s best inside jokes—Ducky Tie, anyone?

GREENWICH/SOHO

One of the coolest aspects of this neighborhood is how much filming is done here. So many movies feature backgrounds from these neighborhoods, and any time of year you’re likely to see giant semi-trailers taking up space on the streets where stars get ready for action. You can learn more by

Including three (or more) pieces of pie, the high-energy tour will easily replace lunch, if not breakfast, too. Before you depart, stop by Torch & Crown Brewing Company. You likely won’t have enough room to dine on fried chicken sandwiches and crispy ribs, but the selection of brews (and tasting flights) make for a pleasant way to unwind for the afternoon. s the days get longer (thank you, extra sunshine!) and the anticipation of summer sets in, we find ourselves ready to head outside and explore the city, returning to tried-and-true favorites and discovering new gems that we are sure to visit time and time again. Located in what was formerly Bradley’s Bar in downtown Stockton is a family-owned and operated restaurant dubbed FED that is serving its customers a welcoming, upbeat, and delicious experience. Owner of FED, Jose Galvin, is part of a known SJ restaurant family, with ties to Cancun, Casa Flores, and La Palma. He has worked in the restaurant industry since he was a kid, washing dishes at thirteen and promoting to chef while in high school. After a brief leave from the industry, he has returned with the creation of FED (food, entertainment, drinks), a gourmet and artisan American fare restaurant serving up brunch, lunch, bar bites, dinner, and drinks, in the heart of downtown Stockton. mignon, broiled to perfection, or the chicken picatta with lemon beurre blanc sauce and capers, or opt for the Cajun chicken or vodka shrimp pasta, sure to leave your taste buds rejoicing. Perhaps our favorite dish was the FED burger, prepared from certified angus beef and broiled to temperature, with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, family-created espanol mayo (sure to wow), and cheddar and pepper jack cheeses with perfectly savory bacon on a brioche bun—our mouths water just remembering it. Drinks options are aplenty at FED, with several local craft beers, wines, and a stylish cocktail list. Brews such as the Henhouse IPA, wines such as Michael David Winery’s Freakshow, and the Smoke Show Old Fashioned cocktail, made from the perfect combination of FED’s signature bourbon blend, sugar, bitters, wood chip smoke, luxardo cherry, and a flamed orange twist, are sure to please the palate.

can be seen in his handiwork, carefully preparing it for a 2019 opening and patiently (per 2020’s Covid’s strict guidelines) awaiting an official opening in 2021. “I’ve personally been a part of designing and constructing FED, from installing new tile flooring, adding bar upgrades, and even working on the plumbing”, says Jose. He and his family have put their whole heart into FED, while also maintaining the building’s historical elegance that, upon entering, you’ll notice in the original curved archways and classic, extra-long wooden bar (think classic art deco speakeasy meets modern décor vibes). The food at FED is especially important to Jose and his family as they know that small details such as preparing their menu from scratch, offering unique flavor twists on traditional meals, and even branding the ice-cubes with the FED emblem added to their cocktails, is what sets them apart and makes dining at FED a big deal. With American staples such as steaks, pastas, and salads, everyone is sure to find something they will love. Try the ribeye or filet

And what has us celebrating the season more than evenings out enjoying comedy, music, and dancing? Hosting enticing and entertaining events with plenty of fun for everyone, you’ll definitely want to get FED on your schedule this season. With a whole lot of talent and determination to create the best experience for all those who visit, FED is capturing our hearts, nourishing our bellies, and delighting our senses. “We’re a family-owned business”, says Sylvia, Jose’s sister-in-law. “We’ve gotten through hard times and we love good food!”

Whisk Me Away

FED MIXES UP STUNNING WHISKEY-BASED COCKTAILS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D

hen it comes to the cocktails at FED, bartenders aren’t skimping. The selection of craft beverages stands up to those of any highend dining establishment, even though things are a bit more laid back at FED than your big city steakhouse. In a comfortable setting, however, we still like to enjoy a boujee drink, and the menu here gives a lot of opportunity to try something new and delicious. We’re focused on the whiskey options specifically, dark and boozy sippers perfected for a night out on the town. Here are three signature options gracing the menu. THE DEFENDANT This bourbon-based drink offers a lighter taste than the old fashion above. Started with a Basil Hayden bourbon (hailing from Kentucky), bartenders add lemon juice, simple syrup, and soda to create a refreshing taste. Added fresh basil and blackberry give the cocktail some fruitier qualities that many will appreciate, especially as we head into spring.

SMOKE SHOW OLD FASHIONED There’s little we love more than a classic old fashioned with a twist, and that’s exactly what this smoky cocktail offers. Perfect to pair with a medium-rare steak or big, juicy burger, the decadent old fashioned starts with a signature bourbon blend before sugar, bitters, and luxardo cherry are added. So far, it sounds like the usual, but the remix comes from the wood chip smoke used to give the drink a more novel flavor profile. Staying with tradition, it’s finished with an orange twist, torch toasted for added zest.

GOOD CALL The name says it all—if you like a whiskey-based beverage, this one is a good call. The cocktail uses Jameson as its base, then the flavor profile gets complex. Orgeat syrup (an almond- and sugarbased mixer) and orange juice provide one element of taste while fresh mint gives another. A dose of Fever Tree ginger beer provides the cocktail its final quality and texture, lightening up the other ingredients before its finished with an orange garnish.

IN SEASON

Three Cheers for Cherry Season  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

I

f you needed another reason to love springtime besides sunshine and blue skies, we have a winner—cherry season! Come May, San Joaquin County orchards are buzzing with more than just bees. Workers toil to harvest one of our region’s most notable crops, and we’re all about it! The sweet, sometimes tart, but always juicy fruit, is one of our favorite things about spring. You can eat them straight from the bag, add them to salads, incorporate them in your desserts, or even garnish your cocktails. Cherries are also a formidable ingredient for pan sauces complementing pork tenderloin, chicken thighs, and even ribs. The only downside to this sweet cherry season is that it’s short, so don’t sleep on your chance to make the most of it!

DARK CHOCOLATE CHERRY BROWNIES INGREDIENTS Cooking spray 1 c. oat flour ¼ c. all-purpose flour 2/3 c. unsweetened cocoa ½ tsp. baking powder 1/8 tsp. salt, plus 1/8 tsp. sea salt for garnish 6 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 c. sugar 2 tsp. freshly ground coffee 2 eggs 2 tbsp. half and half 2 tsp. vanilla extract ½ c. dark chocolate chips ½ c. fresh or frozen cherries, chopped

MAY 2022 | SJMAG.COM

DIRECTIONS Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8 x 8 baking dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, whisk together flours, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In another bowl, beat butter, sugar, and coffee with an electric mixer on high until combined. Add eggs one at a time, and beat until incorporated. Add half and half, vanilla, and chocolate chips. Add flour mixture and beat on low until batter is thick. Pour into baking dish and top with cherries. Bake until edges are slightly firm, for 25 to 30 minutes. Sprinkle with additional sea salt. Let cool and serve with vanilla ice cream.

CHERRY, BURRATA, AND TOMATO SALAD INGREDIENTS 3-4 c. arugula 8 oz. burrata 2 c. fresh cherries 1 c. cherry tomatoes ¼ c. basil, chiffonade 2 tbsp. fresh mint ½ c. slivered almonds, toasted 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. Calivirgin Balsamic Vinegar ¼. tsp. sea salt Pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS Place arugula in large bowl or on platter. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. In small bowl, toss cherry tomatoes with remaining tablespoon of olive oil and generous sprinkling of sea salt. Scatter burrata over arugula, add fresh cherries, tomatoes, and toasted almonds. Garnish with mint and basil. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar.
